2Etiquette Guidelines For Attending Fine Arts Performances The South Dakota High School Activities Association promotes observing the following audience etiquette guidelines while attending fine arts performances. These guidelines provide the basis for expected audience behavior at SDHSAA sponsored fine arts activities, including choral, band and orchestra concerts, region music contests and theatrical per formances. These etiquette guidelines reflect expected behavior that assures courtesy to the performers and other audience members alike. Concentrate your attention fully on the Doperformance.nottalkduring a performance. • We want you to talk about a perfor mance, but please discuss it after the performance is over. • Respect those around you, including children, adults and performers. Applaud courteously at the end of the performance. • Applause between movements of a work is not appropriate. • Whistling and yelling are not appro priate at a performance.

8 Lisa Howard is a Chadron State College graduate with a BS in Art and Education. She has been teaching art for Spearfish schools over 20 years. “As an artist, I enjoy the process of art always evolving. I don’t want to do just one form of art and but continually challenge myself with new techniques and forms. Elise Fowlkes is a 2004 graduate of Black Hills State University with a BS in K-12 Art Education. She has experience working with pre-school to high school age learners, and thoroughly enjoys creat ing artwork with students in her Photography, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Intro. to Art classes at Spearfish High School. “For as long as I can remember, I have loved creating things, designing things, and looking at artwork. I like working with a wide variety of materials, but especially enjoy ceramics, photography, watercolor and collage/mixed media. As a teacher, I love sharing my passion for art with my students and love helping them view the world with different eyes.” She and her husband, Collin, are both artists and enjoy living in a community that values the arts and the outdoors.
10 Katie Appl is in her fourth year teaching band and keyboard ing at Spearfish High School. She received her degree in Instrumental & Vocal Music Education from Northern State University in 2018. In her free time, Miss Appl participates in the BHSU-community band and choir and enjoys to run, bike, hike, and water ski. Band

Kelsey Kaitfors is in her eighth year of teaching at Spearfish High School. She is thankful to have the opportunity to work with her wonderful students and colleagues each and every day. Miss Kaitfors received her degree in Music Education K-12 from Chadron State College in 2012. In her free time, Miss Kaitfors enjoys participating in local theater productions, singing in the Northern Hills Community Chorale, spending time with friends and family, and traveling.

Bob Speirs Bob Speirs started coaching Speech and Debate at Spearfish High in 1988. He has coached more than 30 All-Americans,Academicmorethan two dozen individual state champions, and will be attempting to help his students earn their seventh consecutive team champion ship in 2022.
Ms. MeunierKristin is beginning her 8th year of teaching French at Spearfish High School. After living in France for 10 years following her graduation from the University of South Da kota, she returned to her Black Hills Home in 2013. This will be her first year as an assistant coach for the Speech and Debate program. She is looking forward to working with such a talented group of young people. When she is not teaching or coaching, she enjoys traveling and playing in the outdoors with her husband and two children.

Alyssa Walters
This is Mrs. Walters’ fifth year as an assistant coach with the Speech and Debate team. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ne braska-Lincoln and her Master’s degree from Black Hills State University. She loves teaching English and Journalism at Spearfish High School where she also serves as the yearbook adviser; she previously served as assistant direc tor in the Spearfish Middle School drama program. When she’s not coaching or teaching, Mrs. Walters enjoys hiking, biking, and skiing with her husband and four children.

Cynthia Scherer teaches literature, composition, drama, and creative writing at Spearfish High School. She has been active in theater in all capacities (acting, tech crew, and directing) for more than 20 years. She is so grateful and lucky to work with such amazing students; in fact, the best part of her day is walking into the theater for play practice and being able to experience the fantastic talent of SHS.

20 Abi Case is the director of the Spearfish Middle School, including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands and 7th/8th Jazz Band. A native of Harlan, Iowa, Mrs. Case graduated from The University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 2003 with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree with Trombone and Euphonium emphasis. She spent her first three years of teaching at Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa. Mrs. Case’s Middle School Bands consistently earn Division I Ratings at Large Group Contest. Her groups are often heard performing throughout the community. In her free time, Mrs. Case enjoys spending time doing outdoor activities with her daughter and husband.

22 Rylann Olson is in her first year of teaching at Spearfish Middle School. Originally from South Heart, ND, Miss Olson graduated from Black Hills State University in 2021 with a degree in K-12 Music Education. She feels so lucky to continue her career in the Black Hills, where she receives wonderful support from the community!
