National Federation Officials Association “Girls Basketball Active Officials Award” Since 1983 the National Federation Officials Association has sponsored Active Officials Awards for each state in all sports. South Dakota’s girls’ basketball awards program began in 1990. They have made significant contributions to high school officiating in South Dakota and are members of the NFOA. On behalf of the administrators, coaches, athletes and the SDHSAA we salute these people for their outstanding service and unselfish devotion. The 2014 South Dakota Girls basketball NFOA Award Recipient is Donnie Kayser of Alexandria. A listing of past recipients can be found on the SDHSAA website (www.sdhsaa.com) under the Officials tab.

Donnie Kayser, Alexandria Donnie grew up on a dairy farm in Alexandria, graduating from Hanson High School in 1988. After completing 2 years of college at the University of South Dakota, Donnie returned to Alexandria and started his employment at Toshiba in Mitchell, where he continues to work today. He became active in helping out with athletic activities at the Hanson School, which led him to start officiating grade and junior high school basketball games. During this time, he gained experience and encouragement from his mentors and friends Jim Haskamp and Bill Marquardt, along with many other veteran officials. In 1992, Donnie registered with SDHSAA and worked his first varsity girls’ game (Dell Rapids at Howard). He continued to work many high school girls’ and boys’ basketball, along with some collegiate games. Donnie has been fortunate to have worked several district and region games, along with 8 State “B” Girls tournaments which included 2 Championship games in 2007 and 2011. Donnie’s most cherished memories that he will take from his officiating career will be the relationships and friendships he has developed with school administrators, activities directors, coaches, fellow officials and fans. He is thankful for the opportunities officiating has provided both on and off the court. He encourages young people to consider officiating and to go out and get started. He is humbled and honored to have been nominated for this award. Donnie and his wife LeAnn have two children; a daughter, Heather (13) and a son, Jayden(10).

Spirit of Six Cheerleader Award

The Lakota Flag Song taken from “Songs and Dances of the Lakota” The following song will be sung prior to various sessions of the State Tournament.

This rare photograph of the Cobbler cheerleaders was taken by Dave Cross, member of the Rapid City High School newspaper, The Pine Needle, in March, 1968, before their departure for Sioux Falls and the State “A” Basketball Tournament. Lined up in front of the large twin Beechcraft are the six cheerleaders and three adults who, three days later, would die while the pilot was attempting to land at the same airports. The plane bust into flames after skidding off the runway. Pictured, left to right are: Shirley Landstrom, Kay McNutt,

Terry Blanton, Jan Glaze, Mrs. Ivan Landstrom, Gail Flohr, Mrs. Dorothy Lloyd (squad advisor), Diane McCLuskey and Ivan Landstrom who was the pilot. Since the disaster, the South Dakota Peace Officer’s Association has presented trophies to cheerleaders considered best on crowd control, dress, sportsmanship and enthusiasm at the boys’ basketball tournaments. The Ladies Auxiliary expanded the program to include “Spirit of Six” trophies for the cheerleaders judged tops at the state girls’ basketball events.

40 u 2014 SD State ‘A’ Girls Basketball Tournament

In this the Lakota, the white people, and the “foreign people” (other Indians) used to consider each other as enemies. Now we exist as a country and as one people, we will consider each other as friends because of that, we will gather ourselves under this flag. We will die for it, or defend for each other under it. So that is the reason we will live under the flag, the United States flag. We will be as one. So be it. That is why we sing this song. The translation of the Lakota Flag Song to English is as follows: The President’s flag will stand forever. Under it, the people will grow, so I do this.

“Spirit of Su” Award IN THE MEMORY OF SUANNE BIG CROW -- 1974 - 1992 The “Spirit of Su” Award will be given this year to an outstanding young athlete who exemplifies SuAnne Big Crow’s life. SuAnne, a senior at the Pine Ridge High School, was killed in a car accident while driving to the 1992 Miss Basketball Award Banquet in Huron. SuAnne was best known for her accomplishments on the basketball court, but SuAnne’s academic record and her community involvement were equally important to her. She stood against drugs and alcohol and always talked of making life better for those around her. SuAnne recognized the need for more positive role-models and chose to become one. Realizing the value of an education, she maintained a near 4.0 grade point average.

Year 1993 - 1994 1994 - 1995 1995 - 1996 1996 - 1997 1997 - 1998 1998 - 1999 1999 - 2000 2000 - 2001 2001 - 2002 2002 - 2003 2003 - 2004 2004 - 2005 2005 - 2006 2006 - 2007 2007 - 2008 2008 - 2009 2009 - 2010 2010 - 2011 2011-2012 2012-2013 www.sdhsaa.com

SuAnne’s lifestyle is an inspiration to not only the Lakota people but also to non-Indian people who have responded to her passing with tributes, poems and letters expressing the positive impact she made on their lives. SuAnne possessed an insight far beyond her years. She presented herself as a young Lakota lady who was proud of her heritage and an equal to all. The following is a quote from a speech she made to an eighth grade graduating class: “High school can be the most fun time of your life. But don’t lose sight of the main purpose . . . an education. It is the key to a better life for our people.” SuAnne The “Spirit of Su” Award will be given during half time of the championship game.
