The City of Sturgis is defined by its duality. It sits on the borderlands between the Black Hills and the prairie Heidi Kruse – serving as Executive Director both a mountain town and a ranch community. By all accounts, our town is a rural one with just 6,700 residents, and yet, our resources and infrastructure stretch each year to accommodate the 400,000 to 600,000 guests who attend our annual motorcycle rally. This year that number could double as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the event.

The history is deep here. It was on the parade grounds that the “Star Spangled Banner” was first played in an official capacity for evening retreat. Long before it became the National Anthem, those present at its playing snapped to attention. It was at Fort Meade that the Cavalry horse, Comanche, the only military survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn – was officially retired with military honors. It was also at Fort Meade that the controversial Major Marcus A. Reno was cashiered from service by court martial for scandalous behavior. Many celebrated frontier Army units saw service at Fort Meade, including the 4th Cavalry which was headquartered there for over 20 years. It outlived all other frontier posts of the Upper Missouri West surviving as a military installation until 1944 when it became a Veterans Administration Hospital. It still operates as such today, serving the mental and physical health of those who served America. The campus also encompasses the scenic Fort Meade Recreation Area. Covering 6,693 acres, it is a mix of prairie and forest with miles of scenic trails for hikers, mountain bikers and horses. A scenic Back-Country byway runs through it. The area is also full of historic markers commemorating the area’s important historical significance such as the Fort Meade Post Cemetery.
Many remnants of the historic peace-keeping old post have been faithfully preserved. Numerous mementos of the colorful units and troopers who served here are on display at the Fort Meade Museum. The military buildings and residences have been retained under a Historical Preservation Designation and are maintained by the Veterans Administration that now occupies the post. The museum is a non-profit association dedicated to preserving the history of the Fort Meade military post and units that served there from 1877 to 1944. The Fort Meade Museum is open daily from mid-May through September from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on the Fort Meade Museum and the history it helps to preserve, visit www.fortmeademuseum.org.
Black Hills National Cemetery – Arlington of the West The Black Hills National Cemetery encompasses 102 acres just south of Sturgis. One of just 146 cemeteries in the nation designated as a “United States National Cemetery,” it serves as the final resting place for military personnel, veterans and their spouses. The concept of a national cemetery dates back to July 17, 1862 when Congress enacted legislation that would authorize President Abraham Lincoln to purchase cemetery grounds that would be used as national cemeteries for soldiers who died while in service to the country. In 1873, all honorably discharged veterans became eligible for burial in there.

Fort Meade was established during the winter of 1878-79 by units of the 1st and 11th Infantry and the reorganized 7th Cavalry. The mission of the 10 company post was to provide military protection for the gold seekers and settlers. General Phil Sheridan, famed Civil War Calvary, reportedly selected the picturesque site for the new post. The site sits about two miles northwest of Bear Butte.

Attractions In 1947 Congressman Francis Case endorsed the concept of a regional national cemetery. With the support of various South Dakota veterans’ organizations, a site just outside of Sturgis, on the Fort Meade Military Reservation, was selected. In 1948 Fort Meade National Cemetery was dedicated. Just one year later, its name was changed to Black Hills National Cemetery to avoid confusion with the existing active military installation in Maryland and in recognition of the area’s historical significance.
If you choose to hike the site, please be respectful of its significance. You’ll see prayer cloths and ties. They vary by tribe and band, but all are sacred and should not be photographed or touched. With its small herd of bison and incredible vistas, Bear Butte is an incredible place to experience nature and show respect for the Native tribes who have worshiped here for centuries.
United States Senator Francis H. Case, the man who endorsed the idea then dedicated the place, is among those resting here. He hoped it would become the “Arlington of the West,” and it has.

Since its dedication, the Black Hills National Cemetery has fulfilled its role as a place of rest and respect for America’s military. Since the first four burials during World War II in 1948, the remains of nearly 24,000 service members and their spouses have been entombed here.
At the mouth of two scenic canyons, Sturgis is the gateway to several of the Black Hills’ most beautiful drives.
Vanocker Canyon & Boulder Canyon Known for its holiness and mystery, Bear Butte has been a place of prayer and reflection for more than 4,000 years.
Bear Butte State Park Formed millions of years ago when molten lava pushed upward into the overlying sedimentary rock, this igneous rock formation is a sacred site to several tribes throughout North America and portions of Canada. It is known as “Mata Paha” or Bear Mountain to the Lakota People. The Cheyenne call it “Noahvose.” Known for its holiness and mystery, Bear Butte has acted as a place of prayer and reflection for more than 4,000 years. Even today, traditional Native ceremonies are held here throughout the year. 8 ~ 2015 Visitors Guide & Directory www.SturgisAreaChamber.com
Early in its history, Sturgis was dubbed the Key City for its proximity to the Hills. Today, it is conveniently located on Interstate 90 and offers immediate access to the Black Hills National Forest. At the mouth of two scenic canyons, Sturgis is the gateway to several of the Black Hills’ most beautiful drives. Both Canyons offer scenic views, dense forest, rolling meadows, and towering canyon walls. The vegetation changes drastically through the seasons and every local can tell you if they prefer spring’s wild flowers or the golden oaks and aspen of autumn. Summer offers a variety of native grasses and brush while winter transforms it with frost and snow. Visit the Chamber & Visitors Center at 2040 Junction Avenue to plan your course. We’ll tailor a drive or hike for you.
Attractions Sturgis Motorcycle Museum By Christine Paige-Diers The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is one of the biggest motorcycle events in the United States, drawing hundreds of thousands of motorcycles and riders to this small town in the Black Hills each year. The history of this great rally and motorcycling is told every day on Main Street at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. The Museum is home to a vast array of excellent examples of historic motorcycles dating back to 1909. From early board-track racers to more modern customs, there’s something here for everyone. American-made motorcycles share space with two-wheelers from all over the world. But the history shared at this museum goes far beyond the machines, this museum also houses considerable memorabilia and Sturgis-specific historical artifacts. From early records of meetings of the Jackpine Gypsies to racing history and memorabilia to a room dedicated to women in motorcycling, even the most ardent motorcycle expert will learn something new. Listed by Patricia Schultz in her two travel guides – 1,000 Places to See Before You Die and 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die – the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame plays host to visitors from all over the world each
year. Helmet Hair Magazine named it among the “Top Ten Museums of Natural Motorcycle History.”
With the current space brimming to capacity, an expansion project is a fundamental part of the museum’s future.
Two stories of exhibits chronicle not only the history of the machines, but also tell the story of the men and women who have shaped the sport and the lifestyle. Thanks to local and national collectors who loan their motorcycles and other memorabilia, the museum continues to grow and expand. Exhibits are rotated on a regular basis, offering repeat visitors something new each time they visit. While the hours vary by season, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is open year-round, seven days a week. Located on the corner of Main Street & Junction Avenue, the museum charges a modest admission. For more information, visit www.sturgismuseum.com or call 605-347-2001.

The 75th Annual Motorcycle Rally will take place Aug. 3-9, 2015, and crowds are anticipated to exceed a million people.
Sturgis® Motorcycle RallyTM Our signature event, the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ is recognized around the world as the largest event of its kind. For one week each August, a half million motorcycle riders and enthusiasts descend on Sturgis and the Black Hills.
Street for a full three days for motorcycle parking. However, it wasn’t until 1974 that a vendor set up in the Sturgis Auditorium for the first time. By 1979, the now seven-day event issued its first temporary vendor licenses. There were nine.
In 1936, Clarence “Pappy” Hoel purchased an Indian Motorcycle Franchise in Sturgis, SD. Soon after, the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club was formed. In 1938, the club held what would be known as the first Rally on August 14th with a race of 9 participants and a small audience.
Local businessman, Tom Monahan, donated the artwork for the Official Rally Logo to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce in 1986. This was key in the branding of the event. Since then, the Rally has grown to encompass huge concerts, world-class entertainment, and hundreds of vendors. Harley-Davidson Rally Point, scheduled to be completed in July, will feature a beautiful sculpture by local artist Dale Lamphere – commemorating Monhan’s contribution to the Rally and more importantly his work for and with the Sturgis community.
In 1949, Main Street was blocked off for the first time in conjunction with a two-hour awards ceremony. It grew slowly, albeit steadily from there. In 1961, the Gypsies introduced the Hill Climb and Motorcross races and in 1964 the move was made to close Main
In 2000, the event peaked at a high of 600,000 in attendance. Since then, the crowds have plateaued at around 500,000. The 75th Annual Rally will take place August 3-9, 2015 with crowds celebrating the anniversary expected to near or exceed a million.
This year, as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary – those numbers could double. Its trajectory to fame was an improbable one.

To launch the film I Am Sturgis, Why We Ride Films hopes to raise $350,000 through a Kickstarter campaign.
New Motorcycle Documentary Seeks Support at www.IAmSturgis.com Why We Ride Films, the California production team that brought you Why We Ride, the most critically acclaimed motorcycle movie of all time, is launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its new film www.IAmSturgis.com. “We’ve received thousands of letters from fans telling us that after seeing Why We Ride they decided to ‘throw their leg over two-wheels’ and become motorcyclists,” says James Walker, producer of Why We Ride. “We cannot stop with just one movie. This is now a movement, and we would love to have the community help us continue telling these inspiring stories about our motorcycle culture.”
I Am Sturgis The impetus for the new movie stems partly from this year’s Sturgis® Motorcycle RallyTM being the 75th Anniversary of that motorcycling institution. In recent years, the Sturgis rally has drawn half a million participants, but attendance estimates for this year’s anniversary rally exceed one million riders. There may never be a better time to capture the passion, dedication and camaraderie of the motorcycling community, and there certainly is no better place than the iconic Sturgis gathering.
In South Dakota, state and local support for the new film has been swift and enthusiastic. On the state side, the filmmakers are grateful for the immediate interest and assistance offered by the South Dakota Governor’s Office, Department of Tourism, and Film & Media Relations Office. And even more gratifying is the keenness with which Mark Carstenson, Mayor of Sturgis, and Brenda Vasknetz, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Director, have responded. When making Why We Ride, Sturgis was the first filming location, and it had an immediate emotional effect on the filmmakers. “There is a spirit there that enters you and grabs your heart,” says Bryan H. Carroll, producer/director. “The beauty of the Black Hills is God given. You put your hand on a boulder and you feel this energy; you can feel it in the air. It’s easy to understand why American Indians hold this place sacred.” “Sturgis is not just a place – it’s who we are,” continues Carroll. “When you say, ‘I am an American,’ it’s not about your address or even where you were born. It’s in your DNA, your spirit. It’s why people from all over the world have been coming to this country for the past 250 years. It was always in them – they just needed a place to gather and be around
like-minded people. This is the same story as Sturgis. There are many of us out there who are still venturing, still seeking out that next journey.”
Kickstarter Campaign To launch the project, Why We Ride Films hopes to raise $350,000 of the production budget for I AM STURGIS through their Kickstarter campaign. There are many contribution levels, starting with “The Wave,” a $5 donation that gets you a digital version of the movie poster. A $15 “First Ride” donation earns an early digital download of the film. Increasing donations up to $75 are rewarded with patches, pins, stickers, T-shirts and limited edition Blu-Ray/DVD film combo packs. Large-dollar (ranging from $125 to $10,000) donators receive Sturgis 75th Anniversary Club Rewards, movie premiere passes, and they can even get production credits (up to “associate producer” and “co-executive producer”) and private theatrical screenings in their hometowns. “We made www.whyweride.com about a community,” says producer James Walker. “Now, we want to invite the community to help make our next film: I AM STURGIS!” A campaign trailer for I AM STURGIS is viewable at www.IAmSturgis.com.

Ice Fishing Many people have never experienced fishing except during the summer. Ice fishing is a fantastic winter sport and an excellent family activity. Popular ice fishing locations near Sturgis include Pactola Reservoir, French Creek, Spearfish Creek, Spring Creek, and Bear Butte Lake. Always make sure the ice is thick enough before walking or driving on it: at least 6 inches for walking and 10 inches for driving. Areas that are dark are not thick enough. Ice fishing has become very popular in western South Dakota in recent years. The amazing scenery, abundant wildlife and fantastic fishing have fisherman flocking to western South Dakota during the winter months.
Snowmobiling The Black Hills Area is a snowmobiler’s dream destination. With over 350 miles of marked trails that open beginning December 1 and are groomed from December 15 through March 31, you are bound to find sights you will not encounter anywhere else. These marked trails wind through pine forests and open meadows and climb up to 6,000 feet in elevation, providing spectacular summit lookouts.
Winter paints a different, but still beautiful picture of the Black Hills National Forest surrounding Sturgis. With it comes additional opportunities for outdoor recreation include activities such as ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing, and skiing and tubing.
This trail system has been ranked in the top 10 places to ride in the nation. With 1.3 million acres of national forest lands to explore, it is unlikely you will encounter much traffic. And unlike some other destinations, there is little worry of dangerous crevasses or avalanches. There are several spots on the trail system to stop and enjoy nature or grab a bite to eat and relax. Didn’t bring your sled? Snowmobile rentals are available in the Sturgis area and average about $150 per day. Many retailers offer half-day, single-day, weekend, and full week packages.
Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing If cross country skiing or snowshoeing is your passion, you’ll find no better place than within the Black Hills National Forest and on the many trails surrounding Sturgis. With an average snow accumulation in the Black Hills of around 150 inches annually, conditions are generally favorable between late November and early March. Dress in layers as you would for any winter outdoor activity. Prime destinations include the Centennial Trail and the Fort Meade Recreation Area. Both offer incredible scenery and storied Western pasts. Additionally, there are nearly 60 miles of marked and mapped trails in the Black Hills National Forest. They are easy enough for beginners and beauti-
ful enough for the more experienced to enjoy. If you don’t have your own snowshoes, you can borrow them from the South Dakota State Parks. Visit their website for details.

Fort Meade National Back Country Byway The 5-mile gravel road from Exit 34 off of I-90 to Fort Meade is designated as the National Back Country Byway. While on this road you will find many noteworthy sites such as: the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Chapel, Curley Grimes’ Grave, the Sidney to Deadwood Stagecoach and Wagon Freight Trail, and Calvary Jumps. The Fort Meade Post Cemetery is the only intact cavalry cemetery in the western United States. 119 of the 200 burials in this cemetery took place prior to 1900. The first burial was recorded in 1878 and the last in 1943. The road is also home to the site of Camp Fechner which was the site of a Civilian Conservation Camp. Established in the 1930s, it was the district headquarters for the 16 CCC camps in the Black Hills. Additionally, Camp Fechner was used to house German prisoners-of-war in 1945. Today, only a few foundations remain to mark the site of the headquarters camp. The temporary wooden buildings were torn down when the program was abandoned. The byway ends at Highway 34 and the entrance to Fort Meade.

Looking Ahead
Downtown Revitalization In recent years, the community of Sturgis has made a concerted effort to revitalize its downtown core. From the development of a Business Improvement District (BID) and the Downtown Sturgis Foundation, to several new ordinances passed by the City Council, coordinated efforts are targeting economic development and a year-round, thriving Main Street and downtown. New year-round businesses are moving in anchored by two major investments. On the west end is the Indian Motorcycle Sturgis campus including a large dealership and an EagleRider motorcycle rental business. On the corner of Main Street and Harley-Davidson Way (formerly 2nd Street) is a public/private effort. The idea of a downtown plaza came out of a series of meetings between community members, the City of Sturgis, the Chamber of Commerce, and Sturgis Economic Development Corp. In 2014, the land was purchased by the City and will be paid for by leasing Harley-Davidson Way during the Rally each year. An agreement was reached early in 2015 between Harley-Davidson and the City. The plaza will be developed by Harley-Davidson and used for two weeks surrounding the Rally. The City will retain ownership of the property and it will be managed by the Chamber of Commerce the remainder of the year. When completed, The Harley-Davidson Rally Point will be a beautiful outdoor venue for both planned events, as well as, informal gatherings. It’ll act as both a year-round gathering place for riders and motorcycle enthusiasts, as well as, a space for the community to host events and gather. 28 ~ 2015 Visitors Guide & Directory www.SturgisAreaChamber.com

Looking Ahead Career & Technical Education Program Opportunity. That’s what educators and development officials are hoping to create for their high school students with the newly established Career & Technical Education (CTE) machinist program at the Sturgis Brown High School. Through two Future Fund grants totaling $189,967, awarded by Gov. Dennis Daugaard to the Meade School District and the Sturgis Economic Development Corp (SEDC), and an additional $99,999 from USDA Rural Development, the new CTE machinist program is looking to grow. The new CTE machinist program will relocate from the high school to the Sturgis Industrial Park, a South Dakota Certified Ready Site, once a 5,100 square-foot industrial incubator facility is completed in 2015. A portion of the facility will house the CTE machinist shop and classroom, in addition to offering space for industrial start-up companies. According to Pat Kurtenbach, SEDC President, it will also have the capacity to offer training space for other Northern Hills high schools, and could benefit adult education as well. “Metals-related manufacturing is a large component of Sturgis’ industrial sector and a huge contributor to our economy each year,” said Kurtenbach. “These funds are helping to not only develop commercial and industrial growth, but ultimately it’s investing in the future – our future workforce.”
30 ~ 2015 Visitors Guide & Directory www.SturgisAreaChamber.com
The Sturgis Industrial Park is host to a variety of specialized industries. “Rather than looking elsewhere, we’re investing in a quality workforce and providing opportunities that are already here,” Kurtenbach said. “As students complete the CTE program, they also gain dual credits. This allows them advanced access to secondary education at a lower cost, which also means faster entry into the workforce. In addition, three local businesses, Bar-Sto Precision Machine, Horizon Machine and Legend Air Suspensions, are providing on-the-job-training through internship programs. But it doesn’t stop there. “Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to lease space in the new incubator facility, giving them a chance to excel and move up within their current company, or start their own, ultimately creating new positions for machinists and welders,” Kurtenbach added.
Sturgis Economic Development Corp. The Sturgis Economic Development Corp. (SEDC) is the area’s business relocation expert. As the private, nonprofit economic development organization serving the city of Sturgis, Meade County, and the State of South Dakota, SEDC is the regional “go to” source for assistance with business relocation, expansion, or start-up needs. The 45-acre Sturgis Industrial Park, which is located off Interstate 90’s Exit 30, offers certified site-ready parcels for industrial and commercial development. The Sturgis Industrial Park has a UPS distribution facility onsite, and is home to South Dakota’s largest firearms manufacturing cluster. In addition to the prosperous firearms industry, metals-related custom manufacturing thrives in Sturgis. Internet marketing companies benefit from efficient regional and global distribution. As the Meade County seat, Sturgis enjoys a healthy retail business mix. Prospective employers are drawn to the region’s stable workforce and

Looking Ahead technical training opportunities in this “right-to-work” state. Starting in Fall 2015, the Sturgis Industrial Park will house the new machinist training program, providing area students the opportunity to train on-site with classwork and internship opportunities. This hands-on training will also provide businesses with a direct source for qualified workers. The SEDC’s revolving loan fund and partnerships with local lenders and state agencies combine to design competitive financing and incentive packages which assist businesses with expansion and start-up needs. Creative options for sale, lease and build-to-suit are tailored to meet each business’s needs and are negotiable based on job creation and economic impact. Relocation assistance, workforce grants, and property tax forgiveness are examples of attractive incentives that could be available to qualifying businesses. SturgisDevelopment.com

The Trademark & Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. Each year, half-a-million motorcycle enthusiasts attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally™ held in August. A world-recognized brand has grown-up around the event. Due to this brand recognition, Sturgis is attempting to rejuvenate and give back to the community via royalties on the Sturgis trademark in relation to Rally goods and services. This is a chance for the small town of 6,700 to benefit from a popular event in order to improve the community for the locals and for its visitors. The licensing program was greatly enhanced when a local, well-respected businessman, the late Tom Monahan, created and designed the well-known “Official Logo” in 1986, which he donated to the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce to help promote the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ and support community projects. Through the generosity of the royalties, local school programs, elderly meal programs, arts and culture programs and other non-profit charities have received much needed funding that is hard to obtain in small rural communities. In 2010, the Chamber of Commerce made a community driven decision to remove themselves from the trade-

marks in order to devote their attention to local commerce and businesses as most Chambers operate and function. The non-profit Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ Inc. (SMRi) was formed and received assignment of the rights to the Sturgis® related trademark and related registrations including the Monahan “Official Logo.” This organization is a volunteer board comprised of local business people, motorcycle industry partners and tourism industry representatives. Their vision is to hold the Sturgis® marks for the residents of Sturgis in order to retain the benefit where it belongs. Unfortunately, the marks have the risk of landing in the hands of outside entrepreneurs who realize the value of the Sturgis name and the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™. This is not a program to take advantage of anyone. It is simply a vehicle for motorcycle enthusiasts to give back to a town that has created so many great memories. For more information on the Sturgis® trademarks, contact Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ Inc. (SMRi) at 605-347-5336.

Livestock claims the majority of local ag land, and ranching has the largest economic impact. But traditional row crops are common here, and some businesses rely on growing fruits and vegetables.

Agriculture While it may not claim many headlines, agriculture is the year-around lifeblood of the Sturgis community and Meade County. With more than $119 million in cash receipts in 2011, ag affects every aspect of our economy. Traditional row crops are common here, though recent years have brought variety. Bear Butte Gardens east of Sturgis grows and sells certified organic fruits and vegetables, while grapes are being grown at the new Belle Joli Winery on the fringe of Sturgis and Vanocker Canyon. However, it is livestock that claims the majority of local ag land and the largest economic impact.
