I am changing employers this year for a much better salary

Over 15 years of experience my salary and benefits in real terms has fallen, whilst the volume of work has increased.

Lots of positions available at excellent rates of pay - looks very promising for 2015!

New job, a good bump in salary, and working for an internationally recognized organisation. Now my career can really take off.

Quotes taken from the latest Project Management Benchmark Report

#Education

Does it pay to advance your education when it comes to maximising your earning potential in project management? Those leaving education at high school level are less likely to earn in the £60-75K bracket than those taking degrees and vocational training.

The most common Masters degree level education for project practitioners today is highlighted below. For the higher paid earners, business, IT and engineering are the commonest areas of study. Aspirational project practitioners are more likely to undertake project management and MBAs.

Take a look at the contractor rates and see how the High School leavers fare when it comes to maximising their rates. 10% are earning at the £750+ alongside 18% of PhD holders.

Years of Experience

Just how much does experience in a project management role impact the salary and rate levels.

With 4 to 5 years experience the vast majority of practitioners earn £30-40K. Another 5 years sees the earning jump another £10K. With 10 years experience the earning potential is at £60-75K

With contracting, the higher rates are dominated with the experienced practitioner. A clear contracting rate of £300-399/day exists for those with 2 to 3 years project management experience.

We asked project practitioners how they would position themselves against this list:

It stands to reason that at the lower end of the pay and rate scales we see people classifying themselves as entry level or foundation. The middle ground between practitioner and advanced is also as expected.

The interesting insights are when we look at the Thought Leader and Expert. Do our higher earners just prefer the label of Thought Leader or is the term Expert just one step too far for them. We have to come towards the middle ground of salaries and rates again to find our experts. The question remains, is it better to be a Thought Leader rather than an Expert when it comes to maximising pay rates?

Memberships

Does being a member of a professional association or body have any influence on your earning potential? We asked, first of all, if practitioners were a member of a professional body or association. The graphs to the left show the responses by employees and contractors.

Salaried Project Practitioners

APM - Association for Project Management

PMI - Project Management Institute

BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT

CMI - Chartered Management Institute

Taking a look at membership of professional bodies across both permanent and contract project practitioners gives some interesting insights.

Towards the lower end of the salaries we see that APM is the most common choice, with PMI appearing more prominently at the £30K mark. As the salaries increase APM’s membership numbers decrease with PMI and the CMI becoming more popular.

Membership remains popular with practitioners at the higher end of the salary scale. The lower earners seem to need more convincing.

Contract Project Practitioners

APM - Association for Project Management

PMI - Project Management Institute

BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT

CMI - Chartered Management Institute

With the contractors, we see only two rate points where membership has been taken up (£500 and £600).

For the contract market a dominant professional body seems to be the CMI, especially in the £500 rate point.

In terms of the specific project management professional bodies of APM and PMI, the take up is more or less evenly spread across the rates.

You can read more about the impact of membership for project practitioners on page 4 of the Project Management Benchmark Report for 2015.

Projects Managed

As we have seen so far project management salary and rate levels are impacted by a variety of factors. Over the next few pages we take a look at what types of projects are being managed and the salary and rate levels for each of those types. We were interested in the subject matter of the projects rather than the specific sector our project practitioners were working within. This is the first time we have seen salary and rate levels at this level.

Here are the types of projects that were available to select:

• Business Transformation

• Construction

• Manufacturing or Engineering

• Software Development

• Business Systems

• Event or Relocation

• New Product Development

• Research

• Digital Services

• Equipment or System Installation

• Community/Social

• Mergers and Acquisitions

• Service Transformation

The charts over the next few pages start at the lower end of the pay scale and show both permanent salaries and the corresponsing level of day rate.
