are also using multiple media platforms to help reach new readers across the nation and global community. As more young readers are now consuming their news, sports coverage, and cultural aspiration via the Black Press, the future sustainability of Black-owned newspapers is further assured. The point here is that the printed Black Press in America is content rich and therefore is invaluable in today’s context of national and international content distribution. There is a substantive difference between sensationalism to get media attention and good journalism that renders objective facts and that delineates informed opinions. For more than 189 years, the Black Press in America has represented the best in presenting the facts, news, struggles and triumphs of African-American life and empowerment. The baton is now being passed to a generation of journalists and publishers who are equally fearless, courageous, and articulate. We are proud of the opportunity and the engagement that the DTU program is offering to the NNPA family and community of publishers and media owners throughout the nation. Already some of our NNPA Fellows’ news entries have made the front pages of our newspapers. In addition, the published stories by the NNPA Fellows have significantly increased
Today, we are exposed to 10-minute news segments six times per hour in a 24-hour news cycle on television and the radio. Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms are now used for instantaneous news, commentary and the sharing of perspectives by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. Yet, Black-owned newspapers in the United States remain in high demand even amid the growing digital age of communications and multimedia news services. Social media complements and extends the reach of the Black Press. Thanks to Chevrolet, the Discover The Unexpected (DTU) NNPA Journalism Fellows Program is giving undergraduate student scholars from the Howard University School of Communications the opportunity to “Break News” in Detroit, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and in Atlanta. ery Friday night, as the Civil Rights Movement was heating up in Chicago, volunteers from Operation Breadbasket would fan out across the south and west sides of the city and hit the taverns. The owners and barkeeps were always happy to see them – and generous. “Tell Country,” they’d shout over the Motown sounds pouring out of the jukebox, “here’s my donation in case I can’t make the meeting Saturday morning.” Everybody wanted a seat on the freedom train that Country was driving. “Country” was short for “Country Preacher,” the nickname for Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, the young Baptist minister from Greenville, South Carolina, who ran Operation Breadbasket, the economic arm of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). A half-century later, Jackson is still serving, still fighting for racial, social and economic justice. Now, the fight takes him from Wall Street to Silicon Valley, from Ferguson to Flint, from the South Side of Chicago to South Africa. “Under young Jackson’s leadership,” the magazine declared, “Operation Breadbasket, in 15 months, negotiated agreements with Chicago food chains, soft drink firms and dairies that opened
some 2,000 jobs worth more than $15 million in annual income to Chicago Negroes.” That same year, the Chicago Tribune announced a “quiet revolution is going on in the Negro community.” Jackson explained to the Chicago Defender a couple of years later what the revolution was all about. By “building our own economic institutions, we are fighting economic colonialism which has exploited Black people in America,” he said. “We are organizing economic power through SCLC Operation Breadbasket so that we will be in a position to bargain, not to beg.” In those days, Jackson penned a column in the Chicago Defender called, “ ’Country Preacher’ on the case.” He is still on the case. A half-century later, Jackson is still serving, still fighting for racial, social and economic justice. Now, the fight takes him from Wall Street to Silicon Valley, from Ferguson to Flint, from the South Side of Chicago to South Africa, and dozens of other places across the globe. “The basic formula he’s using in Silicon Valley,” says Rev. Frank Watkins, who has worked with Rev. Jackson since 1969, “is the one he developed in Breadbas-
ket.” Rev. Gary Massoni has known Jackson for even longer. They met in 1964 as students at the Chicago Theological Seminary. “He’s an incredible thinker,” Massoni says. “What he has tried to do is make America better and in some places, America does not want to be better. There’s still racism and recalcitrance, but we’ve made serious headway. At lot of the credit goes to Jesse.” Jackson has not done it alone. He has been pushed and pulled up the mountain by a legion of civil rights crusaders starting with his wife and progressive muse, Jacqueline, and so many others – from the famous such as baseball legend, Jackie Robinson, a founding board member of Operation PUSH, to “The Little Warrior,” Rev. Willie Barrow, to Rev. Ed Riddick, to the legendary Lucille Loman, Operation PUSH board member Rev Jackson’s first secretary and administrator. Many of those people are gone now. Defender Executive Editor One hundred years ago on May 15, the Chicago Defender declared the date the start of the “Great Northern Drive,” known today as the “Great Migration.” This was known as the first formal call for The Race to leave the terrorism and Jim Crow laws of the South behind and to move North. Robert Sengstacke Abbott, the founding publisher in his scathing editorials described the South as “the land where every foot of land marks a tragedy . . . Every Black man for the sake of his wife, and daughter should leave, even at financial sacrifice, every spot in the South where his worth is not appreciated enough to give him the standing of a man. . . . Come to Chicago and prosper.” By 1916, the Defender was distributed in 71 cities and towns throughout the U.S. and in the South secretly — by the Pullman Porters because the paper was banned in the South. Outside of Chicago, the greatest number of readers were in the South. And consequently at least 110,000 came to Chicago between 1916 and 1918, nearly tripling the inner city’s Black population. By 1919 the paper printed 230,000 copies, reaching at least twice as many Blacks as copies were shared and passed on. While the city was short on housing, jobs were plentiful. As Abbott expressed, “More positions opened than men for them.” So life began anew for Blacks, presenting a tremendous altered reality from what they suffered through under the oppression of White Supremacy and Jim Crow. It seemed to them that overnight their lives had transformed earning an honest day’s pay for a day’s work. The point being that it appeared that life was really going to be different for Black Americans, but truth be told, the cover merely changed. True there was greater opportunity in the North for Blacks, but racism persisted systematically because whites maintained their fear that if Blacks prospered, it meant their demise. Let me be very clear: Blacks were inspired by Robert Sengstacke Abbott’s editorials urging them to come to the land of milk and honey, but they
What is reality is that Blacks were terrorized, often resulting in their deaths by torture, hangings, fire and other means just because they were Black. They were murdered because they bumped into a white person accidently, or looked at a white woman, dared to meet eyes with a white man, spoke in the wrong tone of voice and numerous other reasons that were chosen as an excuse to kill a Black man, woman or child. In 1912, Thomas Miles was lynched for allegedly inviting a white woman to have a cold drink with him. In 1916, Jesse Washington was burned before a crowd of thousands of whites in Waco, Texas. The same year in Cedarbluff, Mississippi, white men lynched Jeff Brown for accidently bumping into a white girl as he ran to catch a train. In 1918, a mob lynched Berry Noyse (accused of killing a sheriff) in the courthouse square in Lexington, Tennessee, then dragged his body through the town, shot it a dozen times, and burned his body in the middle of the street below banners that read, “This is the way we do our bit.” And as late as 1955, 14-year-old Chicago-born Emmett Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, on Aug. 24. According to whites, he flirted with a white cashier at a grocery store. Four days later, two white men abducted Till, beat him so badly that his face was mutilated beyond recognition, and shot him in the head. He was

Sadly, the United States has the largest prison population in the world with over 2.3 million people in prisons. However, the United States represents less than 5 percent of the world’s

Whites’ accusations against Blacks were rarely scrutinized seriously and their word taken as fact. This continues as we bear witness to white police officers always declaring that they feared for their lives before shooting an unarmed Black person. population, it houses an astounding 25 percent of the world’s prisoners. Since 1981, the increase in the U.S. prison population has raised the number of children of incarcerated parents by 80 percent. There are now 2.7 million minor children (under age 18) with a parent behind bars. The vast majority of these parents are African-American and Latino fathers. In state prisons, 42 percent of fathers are African-American, resulting in 1 in 9 African-American children (11 percent), 1 in 28 Hispanic children (3.5 percent) and 1 in 57 White children (1.8 percent) having an incarcerated parent. Mass incarceration cripples families and communities, perpetuates poverty, re-creates conditions for crime, wastes trillions of taxpayers’ dollars and has underlying racial bias implications. The tremendous increase in the prison population has changed much of the debates on just about every social and economic issue from the war on drugs to parental rights. The battle between the rights of custodial parents and non-custodial parents (particularly concerning incarcerated fathers) is a moot
These acts of terror targeted the entire African-American community, often choosing prominent public places, forcing Blacks to watch as they lynched and savagely violated the human temple of their victims. And white men, women and children present watched horrific murders while enjoying food, lemonade and whiskey in a picnic-like atmosphere. This they did for broad impact — to send a message of domination, to instill fear and oftentimes drive Blacks from their communities. This is the face of terror in America by whites against a race that has never been confronted for what it is. Never
were clergy, psycho-therapists, counselors, psychologists or any type of assistance called in to help the Blacks who experienced this depth of terror. Yet today we witness the summons of assistance as many rally to come to the aid of the victims who have suffered other insufferable acts such as the recent Orlando shootings, 9/11, 23 in a restaurant, 26 in an elementary school, and so on. We still suffer from terror. Where is the outpouring of empathy and compassion for Blacks in America who have endured the worst this country has expressed?
subject because of mandatory minimum sentencing. Moreover, indigent fathers who are incarcerated leave prison with an average of $20,000 in back debt, according to the Federal Agency for Child Support Enforcement, and 70 percent of all back child support is owed by men earning less than $10,000 a year, landing the majority of men of color back in prison — without being provided an attorney. Many incarcerated fathers have become trapped in a system that has failed to recognize the reality that African-American and Hispanic men earn less than white men, even when both have comparable incarceration and criminal offense records, making it almost impossible for them to pay back their child support. This modern-day debtor’s prison system is destroying the relationship fathers have with their children and makes it difficult for fathers to reconnect with their children once they are finally released, leaving children fatherless and more susceptible to gangs and violence. People of color have been incarcerated disproportionately, and their children are impacted, affecting the future of generations that follow. Children of incarcerated parents often suffer from poor health, behavior problems, emotional difficulties and poverty. To level the social, economic and political playing field, courts and policymakers must understand and consider all of the challenges children of incarcerated parents face when making decisions regarding sentencing their parents. Legislators need to recognize how critical comprehensive criminal justice reform is to re-
ducing state and federal prison populations. Reducing mandatory minimums, support for “Ban the Box” bills and state-supported transportation for children to visit incarcerated parents are acts of great efforts toward reform. Still, more needs to be done. Funding is needed for programs and services that directly address issues that impact the day-to-day lives of children of incarcerated parents. Some states have begun to implement a wide array of reforms to reduce incarceration rates and offer some optimism for incarcerated fathers. In Illinois, Rep. Arthur Turner, D-Chicago, has authored the Turner Bill, which if passed, will wipe out arrest records for ex-offenders that don’t end in a conviction — because charges are dismissed, or because a judge grants a conditional discharge, meaning no conviction is recorded if the defendant stays out of trouble for a specified period. Mass incarceration has destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, but a prison sentence for a father shouldn’t result in a life sentence for a child. This Father’s Day, let’s hope that all incarcerated fathers can find a way to spend more time with their children — and less time in prison. Freedom Movement
In 1966, after ripping down the Cotton Curtain and bringing democracy to the American South, King and SCLC brought their crusade for civil rights and human dignity to Chicago, then and now, among the nation’s most segregated big cities. Chicago was Up South. It was the home of, in the words of historian and griot Timuel Black, “plantation politics.” African-Americans were hemmed, packed, crammed and fenced into ghettoes, American-style Bantustans. The police were brutal, the schools falling apart, the job opportunities scarce – and the six Black aldermen silent. That is why the souls of Chicago Black folks were already on fire by the time King came to town. There was an active resistance. King and SCLC joined forces with the resistance, the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations, or CCCO, and together waged the Chicago Freedom Movement. Although thrilled to have King by their side, some of the leaders of CCCO had neither trust nor faith in the local clergy. So many of them, the CCCO leaders said, were firmly on Mayor Richard J. Daley’s plantation. King, on the other hand, knew the potential and the power of the Black church. “In the South, the church was absolutely crucial to the movement,” says Rev. Martin Deppe, then a young white pastor of a largely African-American congregation on the South Side. King looked for compromise, for a way to enlist the ministers into the northern struggle. That is when he introduced Operation Breadbasket to Chicago. Breadbasket, the brainchild of Rev. Leon Sullivan, originated in Philadelphia, Pa., in the early 1960s. Sullivan introduced the concept to King, who adopted it to the civil rights struggle in Atlanta, the headquarters of SCLC, and brought it to Chicago in 1966. While CCCO would concentrate on fighting for open housing and desegregating the public schools, the ministers would be in charge of fighting for jobs with Breadbasket. King needed someone to lead the operation. He learned from Rev. Clay Evans, one of the country’s best-known ministers and gospel singers, who turned into one of the movement’s and Jackson’s most loyal allies for more than 50 years, that Jackson had already been meeting almost weekly for months with a group of www.chicagodefender.com

The group, according to Deppe, who is writing a book about Breadbasket, spent hours discussing “the implications of the Gospel for the causes and conditions of the slums.” “Dr. King decided,” Deppe says, “that this young man, Jesse Jackson, already bonding with some key Black pastors, was just the right person to coordinate his new program, Operation Breadbasket.” The first Breadbasket target was a dairy company with dozens of outlets in Black neighborhoods across the city. “We targeted those companies that had a relatively short shelf life,” says Rev. David Wallace, like Massoni, one of Jackson’s white seminary classmates, who joined the Movement full-time. “We needed some early victories to establish our creditability among the ministers and the community to show that we could do something.” In 1968, Time magazine described that first Chicago Breadbasket campaign this way: “Jackson’s request to examine the company’s employment rolls was refused. Next Sunday, pastors from 100 Negro pulpits urged a boycott of the dairy’s products; by Thursday, the company had capitulated, offering ghetto dwellers 44 new or upgraded jobs – 20 percent of its total employment.”

“There were no Blacks working downtown or driving trucks,” McKee says. “We were really locked out of the job market in this city.” Even in Black neighborhoods – the so-called “ghetto” – African-Americans had a tough time finding adequate employment. Blacks could mop the floors of one
of the chain grocery stores down the street, but they could not work the cash register. They could bag the groceries, but they were not allowed to cut up and sell the meat behind the butcher counter. Meat cutters made too much money for Negroes. “We went after A & P and Red Rooster,” says McKee, who became the Breadbasket youth director. Is Chicago a Goodcity? By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer At Goodcity’s annual fundraiser, the Chicago Defender met one of its social entrepreneurs: Jeffery Beckham of Black Box Creative Inc. Goodcity, spelled with no space between good and city, is a 501(c)3 that partners with community and faith-based organizations that provide services to under-resourced neighborhoods. Goodcity says it has worked with at least 400 local organizations in its 30-year history mentoring and providing services from capacity building to acting as fiscal agent. It’s current CEO, Jimmy Lee, joined the organization in 2013 after working for Karl Rove raising money for the Republican Party. “I felt I could make a bigger difference with my skills in other ways,” he told Crain’s Chicago Business. Beckham, CEO of Black Box Creative Inc., a mobile and web design company that focuses on non-profits and small businesses started out primarily providing digital know-how to start-ups but has since grown to service larger clients, such as Trinity United Church of Christ, Flavor Brunch in Hazel Crest and Tuskegee University. Black Box helps establish a digital presence for your businesses whether creating a website, social media platform or simply setting up an email account or electronic billing system. “We come in and help you roll out a digital strategy to make you more efficient. If you need a website, understanding social media and email – anything technical to make your business better,” he states. Once set up, Black Box teaches the business owner how to harvest and understand their digital information to connect with their target audience in a more significant way.
Technology Is the Driving Force
Beckham stresses that technology is now the driving force in society and that our youth need to be properly prepared to take advantage of this new paradigm. To do so, he says, “We teach a coding camp and partner with other STEM [science, technology, engineering, art and math] initiatives.” Beckham, a member and mentor with the 100 Black Men of Chicago and mentor with Link Unlimited Scholars, uses technology and digital literacy as a tool to drive change in Chicago’s youth. “I bring young people into the company and let them get a firsthand view of how to structure and operate a 08 June 22 - 28, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
small business.” A lot of our youth are already engaged in social media and tech. Innately, they get it,” he asserts. “I’m showing them they can have a business out of the knowledge they have.” This summer, youth ages 12-18 will be put on teams and assigned real-life projects to complete. The projects are designed to engage the youth and show them that there are more opportunities in technology besides coding, such as becoming a project manager, a sales person and many others. And to teach business skills: “I want to make sure they understand the business side of coding as well.” He refers to himself and his company as a social entrepreneur and recalls the first meeting he had with Jimmy Lee at Overflow coffee house in the South Loop. Lee talked about the work that they (Goodcity) did, and Beckham immediately thought he wanted to help support that work. Impressed by what Jimmy Lee had to say and his commitment to improve Chicago, Beckham committed to being an ambassador for Goodcity’s annual fundraiser, “Sounds and Stories,” which was well attended this year. “I saw that he was working with organizations that support my community. They have a hyper-focus on organizations and institutions that are making Chicago better, but they work with a lot of African-American businesses,” Beckham said. “We have to be creative in raising money. Looking at social entrepreneurship as a construct and figuring out the value of my product and services, and maybe we can sell that and raise capital. “It’s a natural fit,” he says, referring to the relationship Black Box Creative Inc. has with Goodcity. Black Box provides technical assistance with business and digital concerns and Goodcity offers back office and structural support. Non-profits are closing every day because of the state of funding locally, in Illinois, and nationally, and the non-profit runs across organizations every day that need the help of Goodcity. This use of IRS cash can quickly get out of control. First, the IRS does not detect the situation quickly, which allows
the business owner to continue on this path. Second, the failure to remit the funds to the IRS results in huge penalties being added, making the problem even worse. By the time the IRS commences enforced collection, the business
may never be able to recover. The IRS will pursue collection against the business and against the owner personally. I find that my clients are generally good people who have inadvertently run afoul of the IRS. Even those who have exercised poor discretion have realized their errors and want to get back on track. They deserve compassion and the opportunity to get right with their tax matters. basket in dozens of cities across the country. Jackson was named national director in 1967. A year later, King on his way to dinner with Jackson and several other staff members walked out onto the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on the evening of April 4, 1968 – and a rifle shot echoed around the world. After Dr. King was murdered, “that created an explosion for us,” McKee says. “Breadbasket in Chicago took off.” At a mass meeting the week after Dr. King’s death, the mood was somber but electric. “People who weren’t inherently into civil rights,” McKee says, “showed up.” The Vote Getter They were people like Betty Magness, a young mother who figured she was not cut out for the movement. “I didn’t think I had that spirit,” Magness says. “I always felt if someone threw a rock at me or hit me, I’d hit them back.” After Dr. King was killed, Magness could not stay away. She owed it to him to get involved. She owed it to her children. She owed it to herself. She walked into the dingy Breadbasket offices above the Tiny Tots children’s clothing store on East 47th Street and volunteered. She has never left. Magness became a regular at Breadbasket mass meetings at the Capitol Theater at 79th and Halsted. Often times the meetings were standing-room-only – and raucous. “I was raised in the AME church, which is almost Catholic, very straight-laced, very conservative,” she says. “To go to a Breadbasket Saturday morning forum to be exposed to ministers who wore blue jeans and Dashikis was a whole new experience for me. It was a bit of a cultural shock.” Magness got heavily involved in Breadbasket’s increasing focus on politics. She teamed up with Alice Tregay on voter registration drives and political education classes. “We trained people to run campaigns,” she says. The classes were Wednesday nights. On the weekends, the students would be dispatched out into the field to practice what they had learned. They knocked on doors for Anna Langford, helping her become the first African-American woman to serve on the Chicago City Council. They helped elect Black mayors in Gary, Indiana; Newark, New Jersey and Cleveland, Ohio. The folks in Chicago were showing the rest of the country how to get the job done. At SCLC conventions, Breadbasket Chicago was always the biggest chap-

Jackson was the bridge,” says the Rev. Al Sharpton, civil rights activist, radio and cable news host. “He was the one who could appeal to the urban young people who saw the leaders of the SCLC and other civil rights organizations as too buttoned down.” Jackson, says Sharpton, was an entirely different kind of cat, “a young guy in buckskin vests, a big Afro.” His language was more streetwise, more hip than his elders in the movement. “Most of us came from single-parent

homes,” Sharpton says. “In many ways, Jesse identified more culturally and socially to the urban northern plight.” Yet, the young minister from South Carolina “could also relate to the aspiring
entrepreneurial class that was developing in Black America.” After meeting Rev. Jackson, Sharpton quickly joined and became youth director of Breadbasket in New York. When Rev. Jackson resigned from SCLC in 1971 to start PUSH, Sharpton quit in solidarity and started his own organization, National Youth Network, which is still going strong today. “Jesse’s a global figure,” Sharpton says. “I’m a national figure.” Attractive on all Fronts As a teenager, Hermene Hartman, who is now editor and publisher of N’Digo magazine, volunteered at Operation Breadbasket shortly after Dr. King was assassinated. Hartman was first assigned to work for the legendary Rev. Willie Barrow, the short, feisty preacher known as the Little War-
rior. “Jesse might call a boycott,” Hartman says, “but Willie put the people on the picket line.” Hartman’s mother, however, told her daughter not to be one of those people, and to stay in the office. “Hermene,” her mother said, “you can’t go to jail.” In the freedom struggle, no one wears one hat for long. Hartman also worked in the research department. Hartman changed hats often. She wrote press releases in the communications department with a young white minister from West Texas, Rev. David Wallace, one of Rev. Jackson’s classmates at seminary. Hartman and Wallace eventually married. “Jesse was now,” Hartman continued page, 12

says. “He was pushing that door. He was causing reaction. He was addressing the issues in a hip way. He talked business to the business people. He talked church to the church people. Other people, other leaders, had segments. Jesse had it all. He was attractive on all fronts.” After Dr. King’s death, “Jesse soared,” Hartman says. “Black people came in droves.”
A Black Man Moving
Don Harris has been with Jackson since the days of Operation Breadbasket. If you’ve been to a Saturday morning meeting, you’ve seen Harris. He’s the burly, stern-faced volunteer, trying his best not to let on how nice he is when he isn’t protecting the reverend. Every Saturday, Harris takes his post in front of the stage whenever Jackson begins to speak. Harris has been “willing to die for the reverend” since he first joined the organization as a volunteer nearly 49 years ago. Since then, he figures, he has missed fewer than 10 weekly forums despite battling kidney failure, liver failure and now cancer. Harris was a 17-year-old kid the first time he heard Jackson speak in the late 1960s. It was at the Capitol Theater, Operation Breadbasket headquarters in those days at 79th and Halsted. Harris and five or six of his buddies traveled across the city to hear the “new man in town” everybody was talking about, the young, handsome, fiery Black preacher who was brave – or crazy – enough to take on Pharaoh – Mayor Richard J. Daley. “Rev started challenging the mayor and nobody did that,” Harris says. “He did what presidents didn’t do. Daley did nothing for us. No political person did anything for us. Then the Rev came along.” The speech Jackson delivered that day was titled “Stand up Black Man.” “Everything Rev was saying was positive,” Harris says. “Go to school, protect your community, stand up, be a man. We went to him to learn how to do the stuff that he said to do.” Soon after that speech, Harris signed up as a volunteer and joined Black Men Moving, the men’s division of Operation Breadbasket. Black Men Moving also acted as a kind of security detail for the organization and Jackson in that terrible season of political assassinations. geoned to death in Cicero.” Black Men Moving also helped man the Breadbasket picket lines. Rev. Barrow – “a real street warrior” – taught Harris and all the other men who towered over her how to picket and be disciplined and nonviolent on the line. They loved her. They feared her. “She’d call you out in front of everybody if you made a mistake,” he says. “Nobody wanted to be called out by Rev. Barrow.” In 1971, as tensions – and jealousies – between Chicago and SCLC headquarters escalated, Jackson was suspended for 60 days by SCLC president Rev. Ralph Abernathy. Morale at Chicago Breadbasket dropped through the Capitol Theater floor. “All of our allegiance was with Rev. Jackson,” Harris says. “We belonged to an organization called Breadbasket, but our allegiance was to a man. We loved Rev. Abernathy. We loved SCLC. But SCLC was a bunch of workhorses. They were slow but steady. Rev. Jackson was a stallion. He wanted to fix the problem now. He didn’t want to wait till next week, next month.” When Rev. Jackson resigned from SCLC and Breadbasket, so did Harris and thousands of other members. Harris now belonged to a brand new organization called Operation PUSH. It was proud, but broke. “We became gypsies,” Harris says. “We didn’t have any money. We went from church to church to hold our meetings. We didn’t have radio or TV. The word went out through osmosis. The people came, though. The people came.” Four months after leaving Breadbasket, Harris and the other men formed a new security detail – Black Men Pushing. “This is the only division,” Harris says, “that has never stopped working.” In 1972, racial tensions were sky high at Gage Park High School on Chicago’s then predominately white Southwest Side. The white community did not want African-American students to enroll at the public school. Fistfights were common. Several times the school was on the verge of an all-out riot. Black students were afraid to go to class. That’s when Jackson sent in Black Men Pushing. “Rev. Jackson organized a lot of men to line up from the bus stop to the school,” Harris says. “Men were shoulder to shoulder. It did something for the kids to see that many Black men, standing up and allowing them to go to school. It did something for us, too.”

Chicago Blacks Most Pessimistic About Housing Market 76 percent of Blacks feel that it is harder to secure affordable and stable housing than it was in previous generations. The study has also found that 22 percent of Chicago area adults feel either only somewhat stable and secure or unstable and insecure about their housing situation. This housing vulnerability affects some more than others, particularly 30 percent of city residents (compared to 18 percent of suburban residents), 33 percent of Hispanics and 35 percent of African-Americans. cent of white residents. “[It’s] unsurprising that 70 percent of African-Americans report having made at least one sacrifice in the past three years to pay for housing compared to 51 percent of whites,” the study reports. “Moreover, nearly half of African-Americans (46 percent) have themselves been or know someone who has been evicted, foreclosed upon, or lost their housing in the past five years, compared to 38 percent of white Chicago-area residents.”
Housing affordability is more of a problem in Chicago than it is nationally, and almost half (48 percent) of Chicago adults claim to spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, compared to the 31 percent of all U.S. adults who pay that percentage, a study published by the MacArthur Foundation on Thursday has shown. Many Rely on Ridesharing to Get to Jobs By McKenzie Marshall NNPA Chicago Defender Fellow Chicago’s annual Pride Festival kicked off this weekend in Boystown. There were many extravagant costumes from body paint to metallic short-shorts. In the midst of all the fun, there was a memorial shrine on the corner of North Halsted Street dedicated to the victims of the attack in Orlando. The shrine was decorated with the LGBT rainbow flag, candles, flowers and notes. As the festivities continued, there were Lyft brand ambassadors who were also dressed up in festival gear, passing out fliers that had coupon codes for passengers using ride share. Recently, Alderman Anthony Beale proposed an ordinance under which Chicago could potentially face losing the popular ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. www.chicagodefender.com
Lyft brand ambassador and driver Julie, 28, who wished to only be addressed by her first name, stressed the importance of Chicago citizens speaking to their alderman about the ordinance. “Some people don’t understand what the ordinance will do to the industry. In the Chicago area we have at least 50,000 drivers who rely on this for some kind of income,” Julie said, “many of which are part-time drivers, so all of those people are not going to jump through the extra hurdles it requires to become a driver,” Julie continued.
Julie mentions that Uber and Lyft are not only ways to have an additional income, it is also used to get people to work. “We have people who rely on us for a time frame, in order to have reliable access to get other jobs, so we even have passengers that need us just to get to work,” Julie said. Beale’s ordinance can have a negative effect on the city of Chicago. The ordinance could disqualify thousands of current Lyft and Uber drivers, which will limit passengers’ options. “I wish people would just do the simple math on this. People think Uber and Lyft are these major companies coming in, but we provide 92 percent of rides on the South and Westside of Chicago,” Julie said. The next vote on the proposed ordinance is June 22. Contact your alderman about the ridesharing ordinance if you believe you should have a choice.

Are N.Y. Banks Behind Ald. Beale’s Ridesharing Changes? By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer It was just a matter of time before the truth really came out, and now you will know quite possibly who and what is behind the push to regulate ridesharing in Chicago. All you have to do is look to the East Coast, where trends usually start and work their way toward mid-America. In New York for the past year and a half, the taxi industry has been fighting the ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft – no surprise there. But you might be surprised to learn that the taxi industry has a once silent partner – the banking industry. According to the Wall Street Journal, ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft have put pressure on the taxi industry lenders’ portfolios. “Big and small lenders are being pressed by a steep drop in the value of cab licenses, known as medallions,” the news agency reported last year. The value of a NYC cab medallion has fallen from a high of $1.3 million to between $700,000 and $800,000, according to industry estimates. In Chicago, the value of a taxi medallion has fallen from $375,000 to $150,000 accordingly. Because of the exorbitant pricing, medallion holders sought financing from specialty lenders including credit unions; one such bank was N.Y.-based Montauk Credit Union. Montauk’s loan portfolio was listed at $166.2 million and the bulk of the loans were geared toward taxi medallions. However, although based in N.Y., Montauk’s loans were to medallion owners primarily in Chicago. Uber debuted in Chicago in 2009 and Lyft in 2010. As these and other ridesharing programs began to gain ground in Chicago, the taxi industry began to lose business, therefore causing some medallion holders to start defaulting on their loan payments. Citibank is reportedly foreclosing on 89 medallions in New York worth over $30 million. And in Chicago, 53 medallions have been foreclosed on as reported by HVM Capital, LLC (HVM), which publishes activist research on the taxicab medallion industry and capital markets. HVM listed the value of a Chicago medallion at $150,000 as of last May, 2015, significantly down from a high of $375,000 in 2014. Montauk Credit Union had $50 million in medallion loans on their books, $18 million in capital and $6 million in reserves. The default rate among the Chicago medallion owners was so high that it outstripped Montauk’s reserves and put it at risk. Other taxi medallion lenders have also taken a hit, among them Bank United in Florida, Progressive Credit Union and Melrose Credit Union, just to name a few. Melrose Credit Union disclosed last year that its medallion delinquencies totaled nearly $400 million — a sum that nearly equaled its capital reserves. This prompted their attorney Todd Higgins to write a letter to New York’s corporation counsel stating, “The imminent risk of cascading medallion foreclosures, followed by the collapse of the medallion market, and by extension the entire taxicab industry, is no longer a threatened harm — it is a reality that is already unfolding.” He asserted that if New York didn’t intervene and stop ridesharing companies, the New York taxi industry could collapse.
Political Donations As the fight made its way to Chicago, Aldermen Edward Burke and Anthony Beale both introduced resolutions to change ridesharing in Chicago, back in February 2015. Both aldermen have received donations from the Illinois Transportation Trade Association’s Political Action Committee (PAC). Burke received $10,000 on Nov. 6, 2015, and Beale received $3,000 on Oct. 14 of that year and $5,000 on March 24 of this year, according to illinoisunshine.org, which tracks political contributions. The objective of the PAC is to “garner support for the Illinois taxicab industry.” At least 11 other aldermen who are supporting Beale’s proposal to change ridesharing rules accepted donations from the taxi industry PAC. Could what happened in New York be the thrust behind Beale’s push to impose changes to the ridesharing industry in Chicago? Changes that include fingerprinting and checking for marijuana possession and child support debt? In a meeting with the Chicago Defender’s editorial board last week, Beale stated, “The city of Chicago has a responsibility to level the playing field before the federal court steps in and mandates changes.” Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder wrote a letter to Ald. Beale asserting that fingerprint checks would disproportionately harm communities of color, and so has Congressman Danny Davis. Community activist Sharon Ngwen sums it up: “This fight is the same as all the others,” she says. “It’s the banks versus the working-class people.” Contact your alderman today to voice your concerns either for or against Ald. M E M O R I E S Leon R. Ellis Leon R. Ellis, 71, called “Rhoddy” by family and friends, died suddenly from an apparent heart attack on November 21, 2015, at his residence in Delray Beach, Florida. He had lived in Delray Beach for fifteen years. Rhoddy was born on July 22, 1944 in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. Drs. Anna and Percy Julian, his aunt and uncle, raised him as their son. Growing up during the tumultuous civil rights years of the fifties and sixties, Rhoddy and the two Julian children were the only African-American students throughout all their years in the Oak Park school system. Rhoddy graduated from Holmes School in 1958 and OPRF in 1962. In August 1963, Rhoddy, who was a great admirer of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., boarded a bus with Chicagoans enroute to Washington. D.C. to attend the March on Washington. The following year, he had the good fortune to have dinner with Dr. King and singer, Nancy Wilson, and her husband, at the Empire Room in Chicago, after Dr. King had spoken at a Chicago rally at Soldier Field. This was one of his most memorable experiences. Rhoddy loved history, majoring in it at the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. He had a phenomenal memory for names and dates. Rhoddy had a career spanning forty-four years in sales and the hospitality industry. Early in his career, he was a sales manager for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. Following that position, he was Director of Development for the Chicago Urban League and, later, Deputy Director of Conventions for the National Urban League in New York. His longest position was with Westin Hotels. As their regional and national sales manager, he lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit and New York, and he was responsible for the sales of all market conventions, trade shows and special events. After leaving Westin Hotels, he became the Convention Manager of Special Events for the New York Convention Bureau, a position he held for nine years. In 1994, when Anna Julian died, he left New York and returned to Oak Park to live in the family home. He took a position in Chicago as Director of Group Travel Marketing for Travel Counselor Service, Ltd. Loving to travel, he especially enjoyed taking groups on domestic and international tours. In the nineties, he took members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (one of the largest African-American sororities) for a tour throughout Egypt. Rhoddy moved to Delray Beach, Florida in 2000. In Florida, he worked for nine years at the Colony Hotel and Cabaña Club, one of the national trust historic hotels in America and a family owned business since 1935. Rhoddy’s favorite pastime was reading. He was a prolific reader, averaging two to three books per week. He loved mystery novels, historical non-fiction, biographies and political satire. In 2010, he became a regular volunteer on the information desk at the Delray Beach Public Library, a position he held until his death. He embraced this job, bringing to it his love and knowledge of books, his great people skills and his caring and concern for others. If homeless people came into the library, Rhoddy would take the time to find them a place of shelter; or if they were addicts, he would direct them to a place of treatment; or if a stranger just needed to use the telephone, he would allow that person to use his cell phone. He was always willing to substitute for another volunteer, even if notified at the last minute. The library awarded him a certificate of appreciation each year for volunteering the most hours on the information desk. The staff and volunteers at the Delray Beach Library loved him like family and mourned his loss. In his memory, the library hosted a memorial gathering in one of its large conference rooms on December 12, 2015. Rhoddy had a wonderful sense of humor, capable of evoking side-splitting laughter. He had an indomitable spirit. Although he was very private, he was, nonetheless, a people person, lighting up a room with his presence, as he was warm and friendly to all. He was a leader, having exceptional organizational skills and boundless energy. He was caring, kind and generous. Oftentimes, he was the glue that held people together. He believed that “when people and their causes need you the most,” you should “be anxious to be there to help.” Later in life, Rhoddy became legally blind in one eye; yet, he still managed to ride his bicycle everywhere. Throughout his youth and middle age, he was an avid tennis player. In fact, he once played against Arthur Ashe. Although Rhoddy was no match for the tennis pro, he credited himself with having introduced his friend, Jeanne, to Ashe, who subsequently became Ashe’s wife. Rhoddy was always cheerful and optimistic. He viewed life as a journey. In the Peanuts cartoon, Linus says to Snoopy: “Someday we will all die, Snoopy,” “True,” replied Snoopy, “but on all the other days we will not”. In many ways, Snoopy’s words mirrored Rhoddy’s philosophy. Rhoddy loved life. He believed in taking one day at a time and in doing one’s very best with each God-given day. He subscribed to the sentiment in an old Irish prayer: “Take time to laugh. It is the music of the soul. And take time to love, and be loved.” Rhoddy touched the lives of many. It is difficult to imagine a world without him in it. He will be sorely missed. His memory will live on in our hearts for always. His legacy of courage, determination, wisdom, humor, and his refusal to give up serve as an inspiration to others along the journey of life. He is survived by his two sisters: Olga Ellis of Baltimore, Maryland and Faith Julian of Oak Park, Illinois. He leaves, however, many others to mourn his loss.
