Rauner’s slashed budget hits children to seniors By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer

Although Social Services is not considered a powerful sector for people seeking professional empowerment by the state or federal government, it is still a significant necessity for the well-being of residents in need. These Services that were put in place during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency as America recovered from the Great Depression. Since the turn of the 19th Century, the United States has represented opportunity and freedom to immigrants seeking a better quality of life for themselves and their families. Many arrived with little or nothing as they built themselves up on new opportunities. The economics have shifted as unions have played a major role in the workforce with laborers. The slashing of Illinois State budget cuts impacts thousands of Illinois residents with a major annihilation with in the Black community. Among some of the biggest cuts are childcare services and home care programs. The budget that Governor Bruce Rauner presented for the new fiscal year on July 1 eliminates $110 million from the Home Services program by changing the criteria. In addition, childcare enrollment is frozen to approximately 90 percent of new applicants affecting between 5,000 families and 9,000 children. During Governor’s Day at the Illinois State Fair last week in Springfield, 600 protesters

greeted Governor Rauner on the State fairgrounds. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare brought over 600 residents including seniors, parents and their young children from various parts of the state to make their voices heard on what is considered ‘Rauner’s Day’. An early morning started the day as SEIU representatives planned special bus pick ups at various Senior Housing facilities and centers on both the South Side and West Side of Chicago. Heading out on the road by 7am with a predominately African-American group of seniors—grandmothers, grandfathers and primary caretakers. Many of the bus riders are retired and independent – no stranger to the history of protesting. Living on a fixed income is very real and scary at the same when you readjust to a different lifestyle. This trip was not just another outing; it’s a mission. According to Access Living, people who receive assistance through the Home Services program each save the Illinois Medicaid system an average of $17,000 annually by living at home rather than a nursing home. The program serves disabled individuals up to age 60. Susan, who is disabled but lives a functional and productive life as a paraplegic, made the journey to Springfield her group to protest the proposed state budget cuts by Governor Rauner. “Personally and professionally, I use home care services everyday to be indepen-

dent and be a part of the community. The DON score, if that happens—will cut off 10,000 people from home services. There is no reason why Governor Rauner will not stop with my services,” Susan said. “So, I’m fearful and I use it to go to school. I have my own home so I can’t do without home care. Without it, I would be placed in a nursing home. It’s much cheaper to have us live on our own and have a life of dignity.” The Republican’s budget would raise the program’s minimum eligibility or “Determination of Need” (DON) score from 29 to 37. As groups made their way into Springfield, the first stop was the Executive Mansion where parents, children and senior adults descended off the coach buses. Holding up a clothes line of infant onesies that read, ‘Rauner’s Cuts Aren’t Fair’ that stresses the reality of child care cuts to parents and children affected by the new fiscal year applications. As state police approached the protestors from hanging the line on the gates of the Executive Mansion, Illinois Department of Corrections jail mates tended the Governor mansion’s front lawn in their orange onesies. A variety of faces from young parents, to African-American elders and small Hispanic children stood in front chatting, “We got to live too!” SEIU Vice President Jaquie Algee said, “We do not want workers displaced that tell the truth.” See Rauner , Page 9

Rauner Signs Bills That Impact the Black Community By Maze Jackson

Defender Political Editor “I want to thank Governor Rauner for listening to President Preckwinkle and myself, Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore Chairman of Law Enforcement, by taking action to end this horrible practice of Automatic Transfer of Juveniles to Adult Court.” Not the typical quote one would expect to see on the Facebook page of a Democratic Cook County Board Commissioner, especially when Governor Rauner is a Republican locked in a battle of egos with the undisputed champion of Democratic politics, Illinois Speaker of the House Mike Madigan. It is also a quote that one would not expect to see from a Black Democrat, especially when Democrats are holding Rauner accountable for devastating

Gov. Rauner approved funding for police body cameras. Illinois will be the first in the state in the country to implement the policy. cuts to social services. Publicly, Rauner has been cast as an enemy of the Black community, which relies heavily upon the funding of social service programs that Rauner has cut. While Rauner has refused to make payments to social service agencies, he has quietly and consistently signed bills into law that can positively impact the Black community.

Governor Bruce Rauner Rauner has tied his funding of those services to reforms such as empowerment zones and repealing the prevailing wage laws that he says would, “allow people to work in their own communities.” Democratic leaders have maintained that those changes would decimate the middle class, so they have dug their heels in for the long fight, leaving the Black social service community to wait and wonder on the outcome. In the meantime, Rauner continues to sign legislation that benefits the Black community, whether it was ground breaking legislation like Senate Bill 1304, which provided the framework to make Illinois the first state in the nation to fund body cameras, and lesser known legislation like Senate Bill 1847, which expands SNAP benefits for Illinois residents. While the legislation Rauner has signed is not specifically for Black people, their impact on the Black community cannot be denied. There was very little fanfare when Rauner signed SB

1304, “The Body Camera Bill” that was sponsored by Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) and Rep. Elgie Sims (D-Chicago). The bill provides funding for police body cameras, creates a rogue cop database and requires independent investigators in cases of police involved shootings. The bill was the result of Raoul and Sims combining over 200 separate pieces of legislation submitted by legislators. The work could have been erased with the stroke of the Governor’s pen, and as a Republican, Rauner was under no obligation to sign, “a first in the nation law that challenged law enforcement” on behalf of Black people, but he did. Black lawmakers found themselves applauding the same Governor the have been vilifying all summer. That would not be the last time Black lawmakers found themselves commending Rauner for bills he has chosen to sign. When Rauner signed HB 172, ending the automatic transfer of juveniles to adult detention without judicial review, Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore thanked Rauner for signing the bill, even while naysayers whispered that Rauner owned companies have invested in private prisons. In the midst of what was supposed to be a state shutdown, Rauner signed House Bill 3673, which provided funding for state workers and schools. By signing this bill, Rauner allowed approximately $5 billion in funds to pass through state government to open schools and make sure that state employees were able to receive their paychecks. Funding CPS allowing it to open its doors were particularly important to Black people. A closed CPS would put a tremendous strain on the Black families that those schools serve. And with the status of childcare funding in limbo until the budget impasse is settled, the impact of closing schools would have a compounded effect in the Black community. The budget impasse aside, Governor Rauner has shown the willingness to sign bills into law that address some of the most pressing issues in the Black community. While legislators may not agree with his budget, Rauner is demonstrating his willingness to confront some longstanding challenges in the Black community the best way he knows how. The question remains if Black legislators will keep sending him the bills that are most important to the Black community. www.chicagodefender.com

The Gene Siskel Center’s Black Harvest at the Heart of Black Culture By Arionne Nettles Defender Contributing Writer

Writer and director Nefertite Nguvu sat quietly in her theater chair. Her film “In The Morning” was playing at the historic Gene Siskel Film Center and the room was filled with supporters and other moviegoers. Smiling, in a flowing emerald green dress that was just as bright as her personality, she thanked attendees for sharing in her joy by coming out to see the film after the screen rose. “Any time that I get to share the film with an audience is an amazing opportunity,” Nguvu said. “It took me two years to finish the movie and the thing that sustained me is thinking about all the folks—like those who came out tonight—who would see themselves reflected in it.” The film is one of many screening during the month-long Black Harvest Film Festival. It is in its 21st year and is held annually at the historic Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a theater known for its diverse film selection. Films range in genre, variety, and length, but they all have one thing in common—they are created from a black perspective. Although these films can appeal to mass audiences, black audiences have the opportunity to see themselves, their history, and their lives on the big screen. “Nefertite is an artist of the high-

Immaculately dressed black actors spill poetic lines. “I meet so many women who

Your child’s teachers post grades digitally these days – so start your own online conversations with them. Inform yourself. There is a lot of content out there that our kids are consuming and creating. You don’t have to be a guru, but don’t be oblivious either. Parents should be parents and not “friends” with their kids. Unless, we’re talking about social media. Then, if your child is under 18, mandate that you are friended, connected, linked, and following ALL of their social media profiles. Talk to your kids. Remember the good old days when the only tough conversations we had with our kids were about the birds and the bees? And we had to do it face-to-face? Now we have to discuss digital relationships too, because our kids view their social networks as an extension of their physical communities. They have unlimited access to content that

Dear Tech-challenged Mom: Your concern is one all parents share. Technology has taken the way we communicate, maintain relationships and even learn to a whole new level. When you consider that 83 percent of Blacks own a smartphone, and that we spend over 51 hours per month using apps or mobile Internet browsers, including almost 2.5 of those hours watching video, it’s hard to remember a time without mobile tech. Still, if you’re like me and texting is often the fastest way to get your child (who is probably standing right next to you—to respond. Balance is for sure needed! D’Tura Hale started at the Gene Siskel Film Center as an intern, but returned this year after graduating from Columbia College as a featured filmmaker. Her film “Away from the Mountain” is about a father—a respected lieutenant—who comes home early and learns an unsettling secret about his son. To Hale, being able to have a film in the festival is a proud accomplishment, one that’s made even more significant by the film’s subject matter. “My film is definitely a bit more intense than some I’ve seen so far,” Hale said. “It’s something that a lot of people can relate to and it’s a little bit scary, but that’s because it’s real. I want people to really think about how important life is itself.” The Black Harvest Film Festival runs until Sept. 3. Black Up!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about us, ‘The Race’ as a people, all that I’ve observed, all that I hear, and all that those around me experience but most importantly all that I’ve lived. And what I know to be true is that, many of us with the exception of Donald Trump don’t really speak what we think rather we express some watered down version of what it is that we really want to say for fear that it will come back to bite us, or we are conscientious about filtering our words; being politically correct, gender correct, . . . in general an avoidance of expressions or actions that can be perceived to exclude, marginalize or insult people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated. This transcends politics and is applied to social correctness as well. It is seen as a form of protectionism. This American trend of “political correctness,” failed in penetrating European common sense barriers yet, the long-old-way of European politicians and bureaucrats form the essence of an increasingly vocal cutting edge of the socially correct. This is not new to Europe but America born out of rebellion to the old principal tenet that it is no longer acceptable to carry on liberal trade relations with counties failing to provide its workers with “adequate social protection,” has now become the very enemy it fought. America stood on the foundation of “No taxation without representation. However over the years we have seen presidents, governors, mayors and more push to end unions that were created to protect the interests (wages, hours worked, insurance, sick days, vacation time and hiring, firing processes) and well being of the social underdog. More and more corporate leaders, men

and women of wealth out of touch with the general populace have come forward to enter the race for a position of social service. The problem is that these wealthy men and women have different priorities and their focus is not on the welfare of the people or the country but rather upon themselves and their cronies. While stated as a matter of higher principle, the concept of social/ political correctness is disguised to demonstrate concern for worker rights; rights of women, children, the disabled and all other marginalized people. The truth is that those who fall into that category are pitted against each as well as the middle class and thus seen as a burden carried on the backs of taxpayers. This attitude is used to ultimately decrease the wages, opportunities and benefits of the marginalized, decrease the company’s/owner’s production cost, while raising the competitor’s production cost. The idea to export social policy to neutralize a competitor advantage is not new. This is the secret of America. Capitalism is fueled by this hoax. The propaganda is that in a country where voters are free to elect governments that will provide them with a level of social protection, they are therein empowered. That is true only when you have an intelligent constituency that is informed and understands how the law works. Currently we are witnessing the destruction of the public school system being replaced by proprietary schools that train workers rather than thinkers and definitely not independent thinkers. Management has become nothing more than overseers to the computer mainframe, which carries about the interests of the owners. The rights of Blacks, women, and children are co-mingled in all of this social protection conversation. The 5 percenters have influenced people to believe that those without jobs are low life, shiftless, lazy, thieves, rapists, ignorant, seeking to live off of the tax dollars of the rich and or middle class and therefore do not deserve any special opportunities inherent in the system. We know better. This of course does exclude the set of advantages and immunities that white people benefit from on a daily basis beyond those common to all others. Now the majority of whites who benefit from this aren’t aware because white privilege can exist without white people’s conscious knowledge of its presence and this helps to maintain the racial hierarchy in this country.

The point is that men like Trump, Romney, Rauner and the likes may not necessarily be racists but they are elitists and their mission is to eliminate the bottom feeders/ lower social economic class of people and to lift up the upper class, and maintain a working class which will perpetuate their wealth. Blacks had made major strides. Affirmative action helped tremendously to level the playing field. It was not a gift. It was an opportunity otherwise not available. Now is the time for ‘The Race‘ to step up and speak out against police brutality, failed educational opportunities, desert neighborhoods, the lack of parity in business building opportunities, the disproportion of Blacks incarcerated. Non-Hispanic Blacks comprise the largest portion of male inmates (37%), whites (32%) and Hispanic (22%) under Federal jurisdiction in 2013. The fact that privatized prisons use inmates as free labor, a modern day slave plantation. Prisoners of these facilities mainly in the suburbs are counted, as citizens for the Census money yet cannot vote. These and so many more factors that create the status of socially disadvantaged must be addressed and changed.

Good Soil: The Overlooked Aspect of School Reform By Rod Paige Defender Contributor The importance of the home and community role in student learning has for years been shouted by a small but unwavering group of researchers and reform advocates. But even so, the home and community role in student learning is still largely viewed as a marginal appendage to school based education reform efforts, rather than a significant aspect of overall student learning. In an email to Jim Windham, president of the Texas Institute for Education Reform, surgeon Dr. Eric Chang-Tung expressed a view of the significance of home and community’s role in student learning which may offer a new way of viewing its significance. In his email he wrote, “While

successful education delivery is the goal, I personally believe that the substrate (individual student) is more of a problem than the delivery platform (teacher).” Later in the same email, he continued, “I believe that a successful education requires both controlling the teaching platform but also addressing the substrate … There needs to be as much effort spent on the student substrate and environment as the teaching platform. This is missing from the current equation…” The term “substrate,” commonly used in biochemistry, materials science and other scientific fields which is defined as “the surface or material on or from which an organism lives, grows, or obtains its nourishment,” or “the earthly material in which an organism lives, or the surface or medium on which an organism grows or is attached.” From a biological point of view, we can easily see the relevance of the term. For instance, it is widewww.chicagodefender.com

ly understood that the quality of plants grown in one’s garden is significantly affected by the quality of the garden’s soil—the plant’s substrate. A gardener knows well that plants grown in a poor environment with inadequate moisture, a deficiency of proper nutrients, and poorly cultivated soil, will not achieve the quality of production desired, no matter how carefully the gardener tends to the plants themselves. For this reason, the gardener not only nurtures the plants by providing proper pruning, appropriate spacing, removal of weeds, and protection from pests, but also goes to great lengths to improve the soil in which the plants live, grow, or obtain their nourishment. In other words, the gardener cares both for the plants and their substrate. Similarly, providing a high-quality education for students requires not only effective schools, great teaching, and parental choice, but also attention to the substrate in which students live and grow and from which they obtain their nourishment. Achieving this nation’s public-school education goals will require attention to students’ school environment, but to their home and community environments as well. Research confirms that students are far more likely to be successful in school when their parents constantly express and exhibit the importance of education; check homework; have regular contact with teachers and school administration; attend school events; and have regular discussions with their children about school programs, activities, and classes. Students who are fortunate enough to live in a home and community environment that consistently supports their educational learning have a heightened potential for academic success because they are rooted in good soil. It is time to make a much more concerted effort to ensure that all children have the high-quality substrate they need to be successful.

Beyond the Game: The Economic Impact of the 2015 Chicago Football Classic By A.L. Smith Contributing Writer Chicago Defender

There’s an oft-quoted phrase about money that perhaps you’ve heard. “Money talks and silly nonsense walks!” Well there’s nothing at all silly about the Chicago Football Classic, Inc.,(CFC) and its well-documented philanthropic generosity providing scholarships to local students totaling over $3.7 million over the last seventeen years. The Classic also makes a profound economic impact on the local economy. The Chicago Football Classic has been the ‘annual giving back’ to the community donation of three local businessmen—Larry Huggins, of Riteway-Huggins Construction, and brothers Everett and Timothy Rand, principals of Midway Wholesalers and Midway Airport Concessionaires respectively, to the black Chicago community for nearly two decades. This event showcases the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and encourages young people from Chicago to consider attending these institutions. Together, they’ve put on seventeen games in partnership with Soldier Field. “In addition to supporting scholarship funding and HBCU student recruitment at these Black colleges, this Classic has become a popular ‘destination event,’ building on the traditions started by other Classics around the country. Today, the Classic functions as a major college sports draw, bringing in tourists and locals alike, sort of a ‘mini-Super Bowl’ in the Midwest,” emphasized CFC founding partner Tim Rand. “The economic impact of the Classic is significant. As the economy recovers, more people are traveling to urban Mecca’s like Chicago, and while here they want something both interesting

and culturally relevant to do.” The 2015 Chicago Football Classic will be held on Sept. 26. The game returns to Soldier Field, located on the city’s magnificent lakefront, at 1410 S. Museum Campus Drive, Chicago. The day-long program kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the HBCU College Fair, an information session with details about grants, scholarships and the individual HBCUs. Tailgaiting starts at noon, and the Football Game begins at 3:30 p.m. Who’s playing? The Howard University Bison will face the reigning Mid-East Athletic Conference (MEAC) college football championship winning Morgan State University Bears. Tickets to the Classic tickets are priced at $17-$45. Call Midway Wholesalers @773.874.8000 ext. 4024 or Riteway-Huggins Construction @773.734.1600. They are also available through Ticketmaster, go online to www.Ticketmaster.com or www.

chicagofootballclassic.biz. As usual, the 2015 Chicago Football Classic promises a fun-filled day of excitement, education and great football! What is less often realized, however is the overall economic impact that the Chicago Football Classic creates within the nation’s third-largest metropolis. According to Huggins, approximately 45,000 spectators attended last year’s 2014 CFC game and he expects over 50,000 attendees this year. “In addition to the actual Sept. 26 Chicago Football Classic game itself, there are several related activities sponsored by the CFC, which overall, we project draw about 65,000 people, who over the game weekend, spend an estimated $49 million in travel, staying at local neighborhood and downtown hotels, eating in neighborhood restaurants and fast-

food (quick-service food) emporiums. In addition to the CFC Annual Golf Outing, which will occur on Friday, Sept. 25 at the Flossmoor Country Club, our Classic attendees are what we call ‘economically influential’, spending their travel dollars at cultural museums and events, as well as shopping with a diverse range of retail, service-related and other business vendors throughout the Chicagoland area,” Huggins said. The Classic has established dynamic partnerships with a variety of local minority businesses, from printers and transportation companies, to marketers and event planners, including advertising in Black-owned media, to tell the Classic’s story, drum up interest and drive attendance. In short, the Classic makes money by leveraging its solid reputation of success, while expanding considerable economic opportunity for a variety of local businesses throughout Chicago. Adds Everett Rand, “In the final analysis, the Classic is economically empowering for Chicago and the community. Our goal is to challenge and positively change perceptions about the strength, viability and importance of the African-American consumer for today and the future.” “The Chicago Football Classic is truly more than just a game, because the entrepreneurial spirit and string neighborhood-based commitment that each of us co-founders, the Rand brothers - - Everett, Tim and I bring to these events are reinvested back into the Chicago community,” concludes businessman Larry Huggins. Let’s see: These three entrepreneurs actively demonstrate, recognize and respect the growing influence, impact and economic power of the African-American communities in Chicago and across the U.S.? Now that’s definitely good business.

FRONT PAGE JUMP Rauner from Page 2 Soon after, additional police officers arrived on the scene, forcing protestors to board the buses transporting them to the State Fair where Governor Rauner was scheduled to speak. Arriving in a caravan of coach buses on the fairgrounds, many attended thought they would have access through the back entrance leading directly to the area in which the Governor was scheduled to appear. This was not to be as Illinois State troopers were immediately pre-alerted to the slew of protestors making their way over to the area. Protestors were met with state fair managers and officers and not allowed to enter until after the Governor’s program ended. As the warm tempatures climbed to 80 degrees, separating the crowd was a dirt and a man-made mote with signs held high and loud voices chatting above the music inside of the event. Shortly after the protestors arrived, Governor Rauner drove through the fair ground entrance on his highly buffed black Harley motorcycle, leading a 20-motorcycle caravan of riders trailing behind him. Ignoring the crowd of protestors, he got off the Harley, smiled and waved to the television cameras and in gesture that most of the protestors

have seen before—turned his back on the crowd and entered the fair grounds. Upset at how the Governor’s entered made attendee Dawn Shannon even more upset at his disregard to how these cuts will affect people close to her. “I have a mom who is a senior. I was invited to be out here with the seniors and the young people protesting Rauner’s cuts. The biggest connection is that I’m going to be a senior one day,” Shannon said. “All of these cuts are going to affect me in less than six years. Is the system going to turn around all of these cuts that he’s making right now?” Shannon’s biggest fear is that it will be too late to revert the damage that is made if a budget is not passed in time. She adds, “Ask the average senior when they go to the state and ask for food stamps, they give seniors $16. Can you eat off of $16 on a month because you’re a dollar over the income bracket to qualify? What kind of mess is that? Is the Governor’s kids affected by this?” Not everyone is anti-Rauner in the Black community, as a group of ‘grassroots’ organizers rode with Pastor Corey Brooks to Springfield on the same day to support the Governor’s efforts in placing key Black lead-

ers to chair committees. Some would argue that these cuts are necessary to balance the budget as the current deficit was left for Rauner to clean up. State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) introduced a bill that would roll back Gov. Bruce Rauner’s new eligibility requirements to the Child Care Assistance Program, where it advanced to the full Senate on a 6-3 vote. What does this mean for many parents that qualify but are on hold? There are grandparents that may continue to qualify to be paid as a child care provider to assist parents when they go to work or attend school. Under Governor Rauner’s new eligibility requirements, grandparents do not receive compensation for this provision. As of now, all funds are put on hold when many suburban and Catholic schools have begun their new school year, and Chicago area schools will start on Aug. 31. Chante Morrison, a former deli worker at Wal-Mart in Galesburg, Illinois had to quit because she kept calling off from work because of unreliable childcare support. “I made over $6 an hour and I was denied childcare from the program. I was making $1100 per month and you can only make $838 a month so had to quit be-

cause I couldn’t afford a babysitter,” she said. Morrison has a seven year old who relatives keep, but her other child has a medical condition that requires higher maintenance. She said, “The State should at least change the rules of the program, because it’s affecting me and other people who need to work.” The level of support speaks volumes in each area of social services. It’s not an entitlement thing; it’s a real support system to provide our residents assistance. It hits home for many of us as we either build a better life through the workplace, attending school or finding dignity in aging gracefully— these programs are important. As a former private duty nurse, Stephanie Barrett was injured in a fire and over the years, home care assistance provides the independence and support she need without the financial burden of a nursing home. “I disapprove of what Rauner said about all of us seniors, and he doesn’t give a darn about us. He should, because we will keep coming to speak our minds until he change things around for us. Give us what we need,” Barrett said, “He’s a rich man so he can do whatever he wants but we’re not rich. We didn’t ask for this, we didn’t ask for these conditions that we’re in but we are in them.”

Are You Misguided In Your Headache Treatment? You May Be Missing the Root Of the Problem, Doctor Says By Dr. Fred Abeles It’s human nature to want to take the shortest route to ending debilitating pain, and that’s part of why the pharmaceutical industry makes its hundreds of billions of dollars each year, says Dr. Fred Abeles. “Just like we’re all tempted to reach for that sweet, salty or fatty snack when we’re hungry, many of us want to treat our chronic headaches with a quick fix by popping a pill,” says Dr. Abeles, author of “Break Away: The New Method for Treating Chronic Headaches, Migraines and TMJ Without Medication.” Like junk foods fulfill food cravings but aren’t nutritious, pain medications aren’t a permanent solution for headaches, Dr. Abeles said. Many headache sufferers may be under the mistaken impression that their headache is the result of nerves, but that’s wrong in most cases, he says. Most pain originates in muscle and connective tissues, he says. Here are some ways to address painful and persistent headaches. • Priority No. 1: avoid misdiagnosis. Because doctors are experts who spend many years in college, training and helping others, patients assume they know best, bcut that’s not true. Doctors in today’s healthcare system may be misled by patients who might be flustered and possibly vague about their symptoms. Patients need to advocate for their own health, pay close attention to symptoms, communicate effectively to healthcare providers and consider multiple causes. A simple pain-relieving prescription is often not a lasting solution. • Don’t just treat your symptoms; get to the root cause. Pain-relief drugs are like candy bars for hunger – they only kick the problem down the road temporarily. The real culprit for chronic headaches usually includes inflammation, muscles of the head and neck, forward head posture, cervical alignment and its effect on the cranial nerves and vertebral artery. For millions of sufferers, the cause of headaches is a misaligned bite, including the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. This is located at the front of the ear where the temporal bone meets the lower jaw on the side of the head. • Your answer may be found in a painless, non-pharmaceutical treatment. Headaches have a variety of causes, from lifestyle choices to chemical activity or a combination of causes. Millions overlook the symptoms of TMJ, which include a clicking or popping jaw, a bite that feels off, snoring, pain in the jaw and a forward head posture. If experience these symptoms, there is a silver lining to your problem, because there are painless multiple options and do not require pharmaceutical drugs. A few bite adjustments, for example, can dramatically improve the alignment of your lower jaw, resulting in happy, calm muscles that aren’t in pain. Physical therapy options may include: ultra-sound, cold laser, NuCalm, trigger point muscle relaxation, Cefaly and more. www.chicagodefender.com

Stephens’ Butterscotch Bites

Black America Cooks ©2015 Donna Battle Pierce

Donna Battle Pierce Defender Contributing Writer

If you’re entering college this fall, or know someone transitioning to dorm and cafeteria life for the very first time, you may have already been advised to add “the Freshmen 15” to the list of campus concerns. Some may consider these warnings about college freshman weight gain during that first year on campus to be folklore or an overstatement or folklore. It wasn’t for me. Truth is, I maintained a very healthy diet during my first semester at Columbia, Missouri’s Stephens College by limiting French fries, homemade bread and pizza and focusing on salads. But living away from home for the first time “back in the day” took it’s toll. My bell bottom jeans no longer fit by Christmas vacation. The cause? One irresistible dessert from the Blue Room, which I discovered during my first week on campus in the basement of a stone building of what is now described as the “second oldest women’s college in the United States.” I had been captivated by the historic cafe’s dark blue leather booths and cozy atmosphere the moment I opened the door, but the butterscotch brownies made return visits imperative. Wardrobe issues and a second semester health class describing portion control helped me lose those “freshmen 15” …in time to zip my favorite “mod” shift for spring dances. I graduated weighing the same as when I entered but with a treasured recipe edited with as much passion as my journalism assignments. Today, the elegant Blue Room has been closed for decades, but these luscious butterscotch bars remain on a regular dessert rotation at my house along with the philosophy my fashionable grandmother passed down about enjoying both food and fashion. “Copy French home cooks and don’t even consider cutting back on high-quality ingredients like butter, just cut back on the serving size,” she said. Donna Pierce is a 2015 recipient of a Harvard Nieman Foundation Visiting Fellowship who is currently working on a cookbook about historic black recipes and cooks, She is the former Assistant Food Editor and Test Kitchen Director for the Chicago Tribune and Contributing Editor for Upscale Magazine.

Stephens’ Butterscotch Bites 1 1/2 cups flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, melted 1/2 cup each: dark and light brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 2 teaspoons almond extract 2 eggs 1/2 cup each: chopped pecans, chocolate chips (semisweet or bittersweet) Heat oven to 350 degrees. Stir the flour, baking powder and salt together in a small bowl; set aside. Cream the butter, dark brown sugar, light brown sugar, white sugar and almond extract in a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed, beating until light. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Reduce the mixer speed to low. Add the flour mixture slowly, beating just until combined. Stir in pecans and chocolate chips with a wooden spoon. Transfer to a square 8-inch baking pan that has been lined with parchment paper, leaving edges of paper slightly extended to help remove baked brownies. Bake until golden and an inserted tester comes out almost clean, with just a few crumbs, about 35 to 38 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Remove from pan by lifting the sides of parchment paper. Cut into 16 bars. Cut desired portion control (PC) bites in half lengthwise. Makes 16 to 32 pieces, (depending on your willpower.) Send questions or share your favorite original recipe to dpierce@BlackAmericaCooks.com or Donna Pierce 535 N. Michigan Ave. Suite 3105, Chicago, Ill. 60611. A Testimonial from Country Financial I just want to thank Will Rogers and the Chicago Defender so much for their continuous follow-up, which made me, a client of the Chicago Defender, and you and I very good friends. I want to share that I received a call last week from a prospect wanting to come in for life insurance. I scheduled the appointment for 8/18/2015. When the prospect came in I asked how did you hear about me? He pulled out a page of the Chicago Defender with my ad and picture. I was so excited; I began to shout and thank Jesus. The prospect got excited also saying “ Wow, I thank Jesus for Him sending us to you, and thank you for doing business in the community.” He also stated that he was glad I was in the community so that he could have access to me if needed. My investment with the Chicago Defender is paying off. I am so glad that I made that investment in my business to market in my community. I have decided that I am going to have an ongoing ad with the Chicago Defender. I appreciate you Will Rogers and the Chicago Defender Team. Thank you so much! Kandi Keyes-Winford
