Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor On Sunday, the 89th Annual Academy Awards had some of Black Hollywood’s elite in attendance. For the first time in two years, there were African-American nominees in several categories including the Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor/ Actress, Best Picture, Best Director, and the list goes on. What we have witnessed over the course of two decades is the lack of diversity from the Motion Picture Academy because its membership does not reflect the thousands of working actors and actresses in Hollywood. The decision makers are signing off on the studio budgets and projects that can extend more opportunities for filmmakers of color. After last year’s digital boycott campaign of #oscarssowhite and some of Hollywood’s Black A-listers deciding to stay at home, the Academy knew it had a major problem on its hands. The first African-American female president of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, went into full-blown execution — reaching out to the industry’s familiar and new faces. The goal was to make the process of opening membership to more people of color that worked in various facets of the film busi-

ness. Since its release on Oct. 26, 2016, the indie film Moonlight has been building critical acclaim. The story about a young African-American boy who is discovering his sexuality in his turbulent household captures people’s hearts in this comingof-age film. What makes this separate from other adolescent growing pain-type films is the extraordinary storytelling by Chicago Steppenwolf’s Tarrell Alvin McCraney, who co-wrote the script and was a part of the stellar ensemble staff. What is impressive is the fact that Brad Pitt’s company, Plan B, produced both 12 Years a Slave, which won Best Picture in 2014, and Moonlight at this year’s Academy Awards — with an all-Black ensemble cast that included Mahershala Ali, Trevante Rhodes, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monae. On a production of $1.5 million, the film has grossed over $26 million worldwide. Based on the beauty of cinematography, this is a game changer for filmmakers. The biggest milestone for actress Viola Davis was a historical feat, becoming the second African-American woman to win an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy award — next to Whoopi Goldberg, who also snagged a Grammy. Her speech was just as powerful as her performance in Fences as she said, “There is one place that all of the greatest people with potential gather — and that’s

the graveyard. People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? I said, ‘exhume those bodies, exhume those stories.’ As she stands there in a beautiful red gown, the actress says, “The stories of those people who dream big and never saw those stories come to fruition. People who fell in love and lost. I became an artist and thank God I did because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.” The role of Rose Maxson, the housewife of Troy Maxson, played by Denzel Washington, was a ”drop the mic” performance in the film adaption of the August Wilson stageplay. Co-star and director of Fences, Washington did not win for Best Actor, which Manchester By the Sea star Casey Affleck took home. The film is the first one nominated by Amazon Film Studios and its star, actor Affleck, has kept a low profile dodging allegations of female abuse. A stark change from Nate Parker, who was accused of false allegations of rape by a young woman in college. Over a decade later, the family of the accuser blames Parker for the woman’s suicide — unleashing a firestorm of criticism — paralyzing any chances for Oscar consideration. of inclusion to Black filmmakers, there is still a long way to go. This year, seven out of 20 nominees were people of color — a modest leap from the last few years. One of the most historic eye-openers across the board was Hidden Figures, a non-fictional account of a group of Black women working as NASA’s human computers in the 1960s. The lead character of Katherine Johnson is played by Taraji P. Henson, along with Octavia Spencer, who plays Dorothy Vaughn, the first Black Acting Supervisor of the West Area Computers at Langley and NASA’s first African-American woman engineer, Mary Jackson, played by Janelle Monae. Spencer’s moving performance again propelled her in the Best Supporting Actress category — having won in 2012 for her role of Minny Jackson in The Help. Her loss to former Help co-star Viola Davis was a gracious loss. Since Hidden Figures release in December 2016, it has become a phenomenal learning tool for students and adults alike, many organizations buying out theaters across the country to share this important piece of American history. As the 98-year-old Katherine Johnson joined Henson, Spencer and Monae onstage at this year’s ceremony — it spoke volumes. Her presence and validity of this film won more than any award show of peers could imagine — the movie’s message was clear and it starred three African-American women bringing in box office gross sales.

A Clear Message In the Best Documentary feature category, three films by Black filmmakers stood out for their impactful message: Ava DuVernay’s 13th, I Am Not Your Negro by director Raoul Peck, and OJ Simpson: Made in America, co-produced by Ezra Edelman. DuVernay’s 13th was beautifully delivered and spotlighted the core of the breakdown of our criminal justice system that created irreparable damage to the African-American community through mass incarceration. Negro addressed the significant impact of race relations — both films sending an adrenaline shot of truth to their viewers.

The winner, OJ Simpson: Made in America, was a timeline of events that covered in-depth interviews on the brutal murders of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson — leading back to the OJ’s karmic demise. All three films made it through the process of nomination as they revolved around America’s racial discord. Chicago was represented not onstage, but in unadulterated form with an impromptu visit by a tourist group invited by host Jimmy Kimmel. Gary from Chicago and his fiancé stole the show as they posed for selfies with Hollywood’s A-list players on the front row. In typical Chicago-style — no biggie — we do “what we do” and make ourselves at home, no matter where we go. Maybe this is the lesson that most of us should learn when dealing with long customs that need to break out of tradition. Black filmmakers and actors should do “what they do” and make themselves at home, because they will be here for a while.

Research Examines Impact of Segregation on Education of Blacks On Tuesday, the Chicago Urban League released the second part in a series of research that examines the historic and current factors that support the practice and maintenance of racial segregation and its impact on Chicago’s African-American communities. The study, titled The Impact of Racial Residential Segregation on Education in a “No Excuses” Environment, examines the myriad of ways in which Chicago’s current educational system significantly disadvantages poor, African-American students. “Our findings indicate that Illinois has the dubious distinction of being one of the worst states in the nation for equitable and fair funding of its schools by most national measures,” said Stephanie Bechteler, vice president and executive director of the League’s Research and Policy Center. “At all levels – from the state, to the metropolitan area, to the Chicago school district – the burden of an inequitably funded system is borne most heavily by those who can least afford it. The students with the greatest needs and the communities with the highest rates of poverty are systematically shortchanged and further disadvantaged by our educational system.” The data are based on an analysis of quantitative data from local experts, as well as data from publicly available national data sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau’s Public School System Finances, the National Center for Education Statistics and other similar sources. Qualitative interview and focus group data were gathered from issue-focused subject matter experts, including academics, activists/advocates, elected officials, human service providers, impacted persons and representatives from the educational, nonprofit and philanthropic communities. “The findings in our report further confirm that the funding equation for schools in Illinois, especially Chicago, needs to be totally revamped,” said Shari Runner, President and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “Further, we must ensure that schools and communities have the 04 March 01 - 07, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

resources to fund comprehensive programs, services and supports to ensure student success.” Other key findings from the report include the following: Students in Chicago attend schools that receive less funding, but also have significantly higher numbers of poor students. Analysis of Title 1 spending by the percentage of low-income children in Illinois school districts revealed overwhelming disparities in funds per-pupil and receipt of poverty alleviation funds by extremely affluent districts on the North Shore – like Kenilworth District 38 ($41,000) and Oak Grove District 68 ($82,000) with very few or no children in poverty. Even in districts with few low-income students, these students perform worse on standardized tests than their higher-income peers. In wealthier community areas with considerable community assets and economic stability, affluent families with higher incomes and more household resources can offset inadequate school funds. The report goes on to outline a conceptual model that explains the specific disparities in the Chicago Public Schools and the vast differences in the educational experiences of students served within these schools. The concept of “Tipping Factors” is explored and lists the factors that either exacerbate or alleviate funding inequities. These “Tipping Factors” affect educational attainment but are also correlated with higher levels of community violence. “We look forward to sharing this compelling information with city government, elected officials, members of the academic community, relevant organizations, parents, students and concerned citizens,” added Runner. “We will certainly need their input as we develop concrete strategies to remedy these educational inequities.”

Walking through the halls of the Chicago Defender offices would humble any editor. Images of African-American social and political icons grace the walls all over the building, along with poignant scenes from the Civil Rights Movement. It’s a sobering, but inspirational, reminder of the legacy our staff is called to carry on as tireless advocates for our community. I am grateful, honored and privileged to serve as the new executive editor of the Chicago Defender. I will embrace and respect the past, while enthusiastically forging ahead with new and fresh ways to tell our stories, connect with our readers, and provide a forum for diverse opinions. Given the current political climate nationally, it’s critical that we continue the tradition of investigative reporting on issues of concern to our community that might not get addressed in other media. And we need to stand ready to correct misinformation that might come from the highest levels, specifically about African-Americans living in the Chicago area. I’m a native Chicagoan, having spent my early childhood years in the south suburbs and on the South Side of the city. But throughout my life, I’ve also lived on both coasts and in the South. Although I have degrees in journalism from both Northwestern University and the University of Missouri, my career has been anything but traditional. I’ve worked for newspapers, magazines, websites, agencies, a nonprofit and a publishing company — in most cases with a traditional media outlet looking to expand its digital footprint. What I hope to bring to the Chicago Defender, and what I’m most passionate about, is finding the right synergy between print and digital platforms to publish authentic stories with a social impact. A picture of Frederick Douglass hangs on the wall right next to my desk. He famously said, “Man’s greatness consists in his ability to do and the proper application of his powers to things needed to be done.” At the Chicago Defender, we have an obligation to do what we can to shed light on all types of issues affecting the lives of our readers, knowing that we have the power to influence the political discourse and contribute to getting things done. To that end, as executive editor, I am charging forward with humility and determination, purposefully grabbing the torch from those who came before me. www.chicagodefender.com

The Chicago Defender Is as Strong as Ever Many African-Americans have asked the question, “Why do we celebrate Black History during the shortest month of the year?” Good question! There was much to do in Chicago this year, and the Chicago Defender tried to do it all!!! Here’s a recap of the numerous amazing celebrations that the Chicago Defender staff enjoyed during Black History Month 2017. • It all started Feb. 1 with the 115th birthday of legendary American author, activist and thinker Langston Hughes at City Winery. The evening was full of powerhouse performances that included readings of Hughes’ poetry and music that he wrote, inspired and/or enjoyed. Special guests included Golden Globe Award-winning actress Regina Taylor; critically acclaimed spoken-word artist J. Ivy; the “Empress of Soul” Terisa Griffin; acclaimed actor Jussie Smollett; Chicago chanteuse and City Winery Chicago favorite Lynne Jordan; local poet, activist, educator and musician Malcolm London, and theater mavericks Cheryl Lynn Bruce and Runako Jahi. A live band backed each performance and a portion of the net proceeds was donated to Donda’s House, a not-for-profit founded by Che “Rhymefest” Smith and Donnie Smith. • Thursday, Feb. 2, the mayor’s office hosted its annual “Mayor’s Luncheon” benefitting UNCF. There was a panel discussion following lunch titled “Expanding Pathways to Better Futures,” which included Adrienne M. Holloway, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, DePaul University Graduate School of Public Service; J. Schwan, CEO and Founder, Solstice; Dominique Jordan Turner, President and CEO, Chicago Scholars; Partha Nandi, M.D.; and Adrienne M. Holloway, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, DePaul University Graduate School of Public Service. • On Feb. 8, the Chicago Defender showcased its annual Black History exhibit, “Journey to Empowerment,” at the DuSable Museum of African American History. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the annual Men of Excellence, the Black History exhibit was titled “Men of Excellence.” Sponsored by the McCormick Foundation, the exhibit was so successful, it has been extended until March 31. • On Feb. 15, the Chicago Defender staff was invited to ABC7 Chicago’s annual Black History Month luncheon and celebration. Each year, ABC7 covers great stories and wanted to showcase its new segment Chicago Proud, as well as its Emmy Award-winning program, Heart & Soul. The students of City Colleges of Chicago’s Washburne Culinary Institute created a sumptuous meal, and the event was hosted by ABC7 staff and on-air personalities Cheryl Burton and Jim Rose. Guests could network as well as announce special programs, events and/or features each had scheduled for Black History Month. • The Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition features more than 100 dynamic works – including paintings, sculpture and

It is the longest-running exhibition of African-American art displayed annually at the Museum of Science & Industry since 1970. From the exhibition, the panel selected first, second and third place overall show winners, as well as a winner in each medium category and overall in the youth category. The winners were recognized at a Juried Art Reception, held on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 6-8:30 p.m.

• On Feb. 20, the Chicago Defender hosted the Black History HBCU Calendar and Crawford Broadcasting at the Chicago Defender’s location for the “Adopt A School” program. During the four hours, Chicagoland residents were invited to participate in the Adopt a School/Know Your History event by purchasing Black History calendars for the school of their choice. Chicago residents who have sponsored a classroom (40 calendars) or school (900 calendars) presented their donation on

air. Chicago celebrities such as Empire’s Ta’Rhonda Jones and 102 FM’s on-air personality Darryll King joined Power 92’s Shagg Nice, business executives, non-profits, fraternities/sororities and elected officials to donate their calendars. • On Feb. 23, the Chicago Defender celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Men of Excellence. Celebrated as the 10th Anniversary Class Reunion, Men of Excellence Alumni met at the Hyatt Regency Chicago for a fun-filled event celebrating African-American men who have excelled in their professional life and community service. Randolph, Feb. 24 at noon featured the honorable Sharon Johnson Coleman as keynote speaker, Matt McGill, WVON host as the M.C., and honored several deserving individuals including: Diane Latiker, Kids Off The Block, Inc. – Leadership Award; Dorothy Jean Tillman, – Young Achievers Award; Jory Luster Sr., Luster Products – Legacy Award; Eugene Dumas, the Center For Multi-Cultural Communities – Educators Award; and accepting for Carl Tutt, 100 Black Men – Service Award, were numerous members of 100 Black Men. A luncheon reception was held afterward. • Victory Gardens Theater and The Black Women’s Expo hosted a Black Beauty Festival Feb. 25 from noon – 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 from noon – 3 p.m. at Victory Gardens Theater. The festival featured products from Black-owned and -operated Chicago beauty companies, and was presented in conjunction with the world premiere of A Wonder In My Soul, written by ensemble playwright Marcus Gardley and directed by Artistic Director Chay Yew, with original music by Jaret Landon. The play was quite entertaining. Set in a black beauty shop, the soundtrack (with a mixture of Motown favorites and original scores) had the entire audience singing, clapping and rocking to a familiar beat. To boot, all of the characters were named after streets on the South Side of Chicago. It was a perfect way to announce the 23rd Annual Black Women’s Expo, which will be held at McCormick Place Convention Center; North Building, Hall C1. Show dates are Friday, April 7 – Sunday, April 9. The greatest thing about celebrating Black History Month is being able to fellowship with our partners large and small. ‘Hamilton’ Connects With 1,900 CPS Students and Teachers By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Last week, close to 1,900 students and teachers from 30 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) attended the matinee performance of the musical Hamilton at Broadway In Chicago’s The PrivateBank Theatre. This was the first series of 10 all-student matinee performances launched in 2017 that will treat 20,000 Chicago-area high school students to the opportunity to see Hamilton. What makes the experience special beyond a $10 ticket admission for the hottest, most in-demand ticket on the theater circuit? Students are required to spend several weeks in their classrooms studying American history that focused on Alexander Hamilton and the nation’s Founding Fathers. Datcher) Chloe Johnson, a student at Lindblom, represented her school with a stellar spoken-word performance of Ode to Phillis Wheatley. An avid poet, she says the opportunity to participate in the program left her awe-struck. “When Ms. Liz announced it to the class, I was freaking out. Some students didn’t know what it was and that’s okay, but I was like ‘Are you serious, to pay $10 to work on a project and see Hamilton?’ I was ‘thank you’ and that was cool.” She found the book in the school library and was thoroughly pleased to pick up the book of poetry. “I found three centuries of American poetry and I picked it up because I didn’t know what else I would do my topics on. I found Phillis Wheatley and I found one of her poems to the University of Cambridge inside of the book. I figured, the universe is trying to tell me something. I’m a poet, she’s a poet and I researched her some more,” she said.

The student ticket cost of $10 was subsidized in part by funders which Hamilton producers made each ticket available for this educational partnership at between $60-$70. Some of the donations were provided by billionaire Ken Griffin, The Crown and Goodman Family, the Pritzker Foundation, the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation, Robert R. McCormick Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation committed an additional $6 million to support the expansion of the national program. Expanding Program Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller says about the Chicago program premiere, “Our goal is to ensure that students have a shot to see Hamilton and use its words, music and staging to further their understanding and enjoyment of American History, music and drama. Now we have the pleasure of expanding the education program outside of

New York in Chicago and other cities around the country.” Watching from the balcony were some of the ensemble cast members from Hamilton who eventually joined Seller onstage for a Q&A panel discussion. Chris De’Sean Lee, who plays the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, connected with the young audience. “This show is crazy, it’s insane. There’s going to be somebody on stage you can relate to. It’s just a good show everybody can get down to. Even if you’re not a fan, there’s something for everybody,” Lee said. Making the comparison to J. Cole and not always loving everything, but there’s always something you’re going to appreciate. After a morning of rousing performances by students, they were marched across the street to the Palmer House Hilton for brown bag lunches before the afternoon matinee performance of Hamilton. Their enthusiasm and encouragement for their peers’ efforts to perform was refreshing. There wasn’t a ”boo” or a “snicker” from the audience. Although she was nervous, Chloe didn’t allow her performance to falter. “My stomach was all shaky and I had the chills. I couldn’t see anything, it was dark. It was just an honor to represent my school and do that piece and represent Phillis Wheatley as well. As a poet, that was so amazing to me to have an experience that I don’t think I would’ve ever had.”

you roles and you get the chance to say ‘yes’ or “no,” but I love to say “yes.” This is a wonderful time for African-American actors and actresses with more available roles on the small screens and big screens along with streaming platforms. Do you believe that this is one of the more fruitful times in Hollywood? They are calling it the ‘Golden Age’ right now because we can say we have 18 shows on television and we have all the leading ladies. I think the young Black actresses that are coming up now that are so blessed to be leading ladies and to star in so many types of shows. Anika Noni Rose (The Quad), along with Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson and Octavius Spencer — it just goes on and on. When I first landed in Hollywood, that availability was only available through films that were totally Black films. Now, it’s becoming the norm. We have such a huge pool of talent. I work with a bunch of New York actors doing stage plays, and they are incredible. I think the world has so much to look forward to and the internet is changing everything. Who influenced you coming up as an actress and how are you paying it forward as someone who can help the next wave of young actors? I do master classes for Wendy Raquel for the Amazing Grace Conservatory in Los Angeles. You can give back in different ways. You can be charitable with your money and give back that way in funding. Some of the programs that different organizations do — I do a lot of that. I also do a lot of things for different charities. To me, continuing to work is part of what you do for the talent that comes behind you because they believe that there is longevity in it and they can make a living in it, and it’s something viable for their families. I hope that we use

more American Black men and women in the roles that are coming up for us. Who has influenced you? I’m influenced by everyone who has come up in both film and music — Cicely Tyson, Dianne Carroll, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson and Gladys Knight. All the women who were shown to us were great influences besides your mom, your sisters and the women in your community. What has been some of the challenges you’ve faced coming up in the business? I don’t feel like that I’ve ever been blocked from things. It all depends on how you did it, because I came through the educational system. Once you get your education, you’re entitled, and I think it helps a lot on how you go about in getting work. In thinking that, I felt that’s why I’ve always worked. How do you create balance for yourself? Obviously, you remain working and active and you remain busy. How do you decompress? I’m overbooked. I’m doing much too much. Sometimes my husband is worried about me. But in this business, it’s either feast or famine — you’re either doing everything or you’re doing nothing. There’s all these hobbies that I enjoy doing — I make evening gowns, knit, crochet, and I also make jewelry. I love to read, and these are things that bring me joy easily. At 67, Devine is enjoying the ride as the voice of Hallie in the children’s animation series Hallie the Hippo, as well as the release of Where Children Play on the Urban Movie Channel. In select cities, Chapter & Verse is currently playing at theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Take Care in Selecting the Correct Filing Status By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer When taxpayers file their tax return, it’s important they use the right filing status because it can affect the amount of tax they owe for the year. It may even determine if they must file a tax return at all. Taxpayers should keep in mind that their marital status on Dec. 31 is their status for the whole year. Sometimes more than one filing status may apply to taxpayers. When that happens, taxpayers should choose the one that allows them to pay the least amount of tax. Here’s a list of the five filing statuses: 1. Single. Normally this status is for taxpayers who aren’t married, or who are divorced or legally separated under state law. 2. Married Filing Jointly. If taxpayers are married, they can file a joint tax return. If a spouse died in 2016, the widowed spouse can often file a joint return for that year. 3. Married Filing Separately. A married couple can choose to

file two separate tax returns. This may benefit them if it results in less tax owed than if they file a joint tax return. Taxpayers may want to prepare their taxes both ways before they choose. They can also use this status if each wants to be responsible only for their own tax. This status may also be wise if a person is newly married and the spouse has unpaid prior taxes. 4. Head of Household. In most cases, this status applies to a taxpayer who is not married, but there are some special rules. For example, the taxpayer must have paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for themselves and a qualifying person. Don’t choose this status by mistake. Be sure to check all the rules. 5. Qualifying Widow(er) with Dependent Child. This status may apply to a taxpayer if their spouse died during 2014 or 2015 and they have a dependent child. Other conditions also apply. Be very careful in choosing your tax preparer. File properly based on your individual situation. You should avoid anyone who suggests that you file in a manner that is incorrect. Bringing Up Ballers: Not Your Average Moms By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor With the success of Black Ink Chicago on VH1, Lifetime has taken the plunge onto the Chicago scene following the real lives of five Chicago-area mothers. The network will premiere the new series Bringing Up Ballers on Wednesday, March 1, at 9 p.m. The docuseries features the world of five go-getter business women who manage to balance their daily lives that revolve around their talented, athletically committed children. The hustle and bustle of middle school and high school basketball priorities keeps them all engaged and focused on the most important asset — their rising ball players. Tiffany runs a successful custom auto repair business. The mother of five devotes her time to her son Michael, 15, who aspires to make it to the NBA. Johanna, a former Ford model, has a 12-year-old son, Amari, who is playing against older players and turning heads. Heather and her ex-husband, former NBA player Aaron Williams, both spend time with their children, Danyelle, Camron and Aaron. Aaron Jr. plays on several basketball teams and is guided by his baller

father. Peytyn Willborn is probably one of the more recognizable among the women, carrying a strong personality and smart head for business. The ex-wife of comedian and national radio host George Willborn is the owner of Chicago’s only Black-owned Italian restaurant in Bronzeville. The couple’s son, George Willborn III, at 18, is talented, handsome and gearing up to graduate high school under the business savvy eye of Peytyn. One of Peytyn’s best friends is Nikki, a dedicated baller mom as well as a real estate broker and creator of her own line of apparel — Baller Moms and Hooplife. Her son, Namari, 14, attends Morgan Park Academy as a freshman, playing varsity on the basketball team — destined to become one of the country’s leading high school players. Excited for the premiere of the series, Peytyn says the highlights of the show are the moms. “All of the moms on there, we all know each other. We all support each other — I go to Nikki’s games, Nikki comes to our games, I go to all the other moms’ games. We just support each other, we’re like a family.” She believes the network was attracted to seeing the passion that they, as moms,

have for supporting their athlete kids. “They see the collaboration of this group of mothers. Some of us have been single, some of us divorced like myself and married. You can stick together and raise your son, even if our sons are playing against each other — they see that we still love each other,” she said, adding the producers embraced this. Nikki and Peytyn are both strong Black women who are outspoken and admit their presence at the games can spark some eyebrows among some of the other parents. Nikki says, “They hate to see us coming into the gym. People like me and Peytyn are going to look a certain way. Peytyn is going to be strutting in her heels with a half-cut T-shirt. She got that big ole booty and me the same. I might not be as dressed up as Peytyn but I got my make-up on and I’m looking cute,” she said. “The average mom is not coming to the game and they don’t look like us. So, it’s ‘Who she thinks she is?’ That’s the first thing that comes to mind. Or, people think, ‘I thought you were different.’ I tell them, ‘Girl, I’m from the low-end, I’m from 43rd and State.’ I don’t think like that — I’m not a suburban privilege-type of girl who thinks she’s better than others.”

This past week, the Chicago Defender celebrated our 10th Annual Men of Excellence Awards Dinner, recognizing 50 Chicago African-American men showcasing significant contributions to their community. This was a beautiful sight to see folks come out and show out in their best suits and dresses. The sold-out room at the Hyatt Regency symbolized why there is a need for programs like our annual MOE to take place, also why more Chicago Black community stakeholders in business, education, faith and the arts must come together without egos. Wrapping up the short month of the year, Black History Month ends, but the awareness and knowledge sharing must be a daily commitment of learning, earning and growing. Over the weekend, a bronze plaque commemorating the 100 Year Anniversary of The Great Migration to Chicago was unveiled at the new 35th Street Bridge. Congrats! Congratulations to DJ Slugo and the Blok Club DJs on producing the 7th Annual Blok Club DJs Meet & Greet at Tailgators Sports Bar & Grill in Bolingbrook. A 20+ year music vet and one of the trailblazers in Ghetto House music, DJ Slugo is the co-founder and head of a group of leading DJs throughout the Midwest. The group presented a Women in Music & Media panel discussion that featured Power 92 on-air personality/hip hop artist, Teefa, radio on-air personality and DJ, Khris ‘First Lady’ Hutchinson, Chicago Defender’s Senior Writer, Mary L. Datcher, along with Lesley Taylor (Blok Club DJs) as the moderator. Throughout the afternoon, several indie artists performed, networked and exchanged valuable information to help strengthen relationships in the music community. Hats off to City of Chicago Treasurer Kurt Summers for his office recognizing a winning essay from student entrees during the Black History Month Scholarship program. Wendell Phillips Academy senior Malcom Fox is this year’s scholarship winner and ranked third in his senior class. He will he attending the prestigious Wesleyan University in the fall, where he will play football for the Wesleyan Cardinals and

made her transition on Feb. 20 at 88. In 1956, she became the Liaison Officer for the U.S. State Department, sent on a goodwill tour of Africa with USA track and field athletes. Mrs. Robichaux held a leadership role in the Catholic Interracial Council of Chicago, and in 1960, she joined General Mills as Betty Crocker’s first Black baking consultant. As the wife of Committeeman Joseph Robichaux, she was considered the “first lady” of the 21st Ward. In 1971, Mrs. Robichaux became the President and CEO of the first Black-owned ice cream company in the world — serving the company in this role for over 20 years. As an advocate of women leadership in business, she also served as a Jury Commissioner for the city of Chicago. In 1993, Mrs. Robichaux moved to Paris, France, promoting Gospel concerns throughout Europe. Her story can be found in the HistoryMakers 2003 archives. She leaves remembering the wonderful times shared with her many friends and with her daughter and her husband, Sheila Glaze and Dr. William H. Glaze Sr.; her son, Joseph Howard Robichaux, Ph.D.; her granddaughter, lawyer Veronica Wren Glaze.

In Memoriam Recognizing Prominent Black Business Leaders

We reported last week the passing of West Side businessman Willie James Barney on Feb. 20. The Parkdale, Arkansas, native was born on Oct. 10, 1927. Like so many African-American southerners, he relocated to Chicago in the early 1950s. With a vision and an entrepreneurial spirit, he began selling R&B records from the trunk of his car, eventually growing Barney’s Swing Shop into Barney’s Records. As Barney’s One-Stop became one of the country’s leading distribution hubs to many mom and pop retailer stores, indie labels and DJs broke into the mixtape business. He created 4Brothers Records that introduced acts such as R&B icon Tyrone Davis and G.L. Crockett. Mr. Barney took hold of his personal health through the transformation of vegetarianism where he created New Life Health Foods and Restaurant in the early 1980s in the Lawndale community. The business is still flourishing as his son Raymond continues to oversee the store’s operation. When asked about his contribution to the Civil Rights movement, Mr. Barney bluntly says, “I was giving people jobs.” His direct and honest approach with people secured him the loyalty and respect of his employees, neighbors, and friends. As a prominent member of the Chicago Black business and Hebrew Israelite community, he was a proud patriarch who aimed to instill the values of tenacity and family togetherness in his children. Mr. Barney is survived by sons, Reginald and Raymond; daughter, Anayah and 16 grandchildren, along with many greatand great-great grandchildren. www.chicagodefender.com

Ingredient Variations and Substitutions You can typically find wild blueberries in the freezer section of your grocery store. If you can’t find them, you can substitute regular frozen blueberries, but they will not be as sweet. This is a great smoothie recipe to disguise veggies, so add a handful of spinach if you want to get a little more vegetable power. To make this smoothie dairy-free, use dairy-free yogurt, such as Silk, and unsweetened dairy-free milk of your choice.
