Riders can sometimes find it difficult to find a seat on a CTA car when someone uses several seats to sleep. (Photo by William T. Rogers)

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Chicago is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, but similar to an unpolished, sparkling amethyst—it has its sharp edges. Our skyline is breathtaking, the city’s shoreline stretches from Indiana to Wisconsin and our world-class transportation system allows newcomers to learn the area with ease. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is the vein that runs throughout the body of the city—as 10 million commuters rely primarily on the L and bus lines every week. There have been several changes to CTA from the paper transfer, smaller transit cards to Ventra cards outsourced to the Cubic Transportation Systems. The system has made it more accessible for riders to purchase fares online, onsite at train stations and at authorized retailers. The last CTA budget did not include a fare hike—a surprising relief for millions of commuters who look to save on parking and gas but are met with the pricey fares. When speaking with commuters, the history of the transit agency’s fare hikes can be irritable at best. However, another issue is pressing right now. Finding a proper seat on the train has become a major concern for riders while homeless people sleep on the trains—at times taking up an entire row of seats. Aisha Pryor, who resides on the South Side, works daily downtown and rides the Red Line. “As an adult rider, you become more aware. I do notice, there in the winter time—mostly in the winter time--I encounter a lot of homeless people and sometimes they will lay out and take up three seats,” she said.

CTA spokesperson Brian Steele said, “Every year, we get a spike in the winter months. Obviously, the weather is colder. Typically, those numbers come down during the warmer weather months. Those numbers have been dropping since the temperature is dropping.” And while the temperatures rise and the number of homeless riders decrease, there is still some concern from commuters. It’s what may be left behind. Since the late 1990’s, the CTA changed over from the hard-plastic bucket-style seats to the micro-fabric covers on the buses and gradually transitioned the look to its train cars. The dark blue color gave the interior a fresh look that resembled other major cities’ transportation system. But, it has caused more grief than comfort for CTA riders—concerned about cleanliness when at times seats can be wet from either rainy weather from a cracked window or urine stains—it makes for an unpleasant and unsanitary commute. Pryor says, “When it rains, I’m conscious of it. I’ll take my hand to see if the fabric is wet, but then I don’t want to because everyone has been sitting there. It’s either you’re going to sit or you’re going to stand. I ride all the way to the end of the line. I’m getting off of work and I’m tired.” CTA admits to receiving mixed feedback from half of its riders regarding the fabric cover seats with a 50/50 positive acceptance while others preferred the hard plastic that made liquid and other foreign substances visible. “We’ve begun to replace the fabric seat inserts with hard plastic inserts. Part of the reason that we went to the fabric seating—they are more graffiti resistant and also vandalism resistant. They don’t show marker. The fabric is also treated

with an anti-microbial treatment to help address bacterial material. This is special fabric made for transit usage. We are in the process of changing out the fabric processed seats to hard plastic.” With 1,800 active CTA buses and 1,200 train railcars in service—Steele said this process will take some time and couldn’t offer the order of which transit lines would be affected with the new cosmetic changes. Meanwhile, commuters such as Kevin Arnold are concerned about the present situation of Chicago’s homeless finding refuge on the railcars. Growing up in the city, this has become a way of riding public transportation. “It has pretty much been the same for years. Late nights and early mornings, you see people sleeping with all of their things on the train.” Although the weather is warming up and there will be less homeless individuals riding the lines—the problem still exists and more families are impacted by unemployment. Floretta Strong-Pulley works in the Retired Veterans Administration office, and as a retired veteran, she sees firsthand the major impact of being homeless among vets. “For many people, they’re a month’s paycheck from being homeless, now it’s less than half of a paycheck. You live half a paycheck, you are homeless. Veterans are losing jobs like everyone else. Anything you could think of—a veteran is also dealing with the same thing,” she said. Pulley says since the Reagan administration, Title 38, which cared for veterans continued on page 04

without restrictions—has now given the federal government the authority to deny many vets access to resources and care at their discretion. Her job is to help veterans with the necessary access to prevent mounting circumstances that force many to seek shelter on the CTA railcars. Every day, Pulley handles cases that are very similar but can have detrimental results. She explains a typical situation. “You have a VA veteran with a mental health condition. He doesn’t have a substance abuse problem but he’s just not feeling well. He lost his job...He’s jobless and doesn’t have the money to pay his rent— he loses his place and now he’s looking at shelters. Some of these places are dangerous, which leads many to alternate areas.” The CTA partners with the City of Chicago’s Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS). The DFSS’ purpose is to promote the independence and welfare of individuals, support families and strengthen neighborhoods—according to the City of Chicago’s website. Under the department, the Homeless Services Division falls under the responsibility of DFSS to implement a 10-year plan to eliminate homelessness in Chicago. The department’s services include providing housing, prevention and other support services. The Chicago Defender reached out to the DFSS for more thorough insight on the relationship with CTA and did not receive a returned call. Steele, of the CTA, said, “We work with them [DFSS] on a program under which we handle outreach to homeless individuals who are riding the system. Once or twice a week, we go to various locations to engage with homeless individuals to get them to take advantage of the support services that are available throughout the city.” The problem is much deeper than a temporary fix--with the state’s budget still at a major standstill. The growing number of human service agencies are working at constrained and limited resources. Last year the CTA began “quality of life” missions on the rail system. Routine sweeps are conducted from 11pm-7am, a couple nights a week. “We have a canine team and they go out, ride the trains and look for cases if people are sleeping on the train, taking up more than one seat or laying on the floor—they’re able to address this during the trip.” Steele points out when the train gets to the end of the line, according to the CTA “Rules of Conduct” policy, all riders have to get off the train, then exit the station. “In order to get back on the train, they have to pay another fare. That’s applied to all of our customers.” Aisha Pryor disagrees—she says this is not always the case. “When I’m getting on, some of the

Homeless train riders may take up extra space as they ride with all of their belongings, making it difficult for others to find seating. (Photo by William T. Rogers)

“We have a canine team and they go out, ride the trains and look for cases if people are sleeping on the train, taking up more than one seat or laying on the floor—they’re able to address this during the trip.” CTA spokesperson, Brian Steele CTA cleaning crew that get on will wake up the homeless people. One reason is the train may go into the yard so they have to get off. Sometimes, they’ll just wake them up to let them know they are at the end of the line. They know they’re not getting off, but they’ll wake them up. Some CTA cleaners don’t wake them up at all,” Pryor said. But Steele is adamant the CTA is diligent about its policy being carried out by its employees. “We do cleaning of railcars at the start of every service day—cars are cleaned and they go along their given route. They

04 May 17 - 23, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

clean before they go on their next run. Crews will pick up any visible debris. If they see any kind of foreign substance or anything that need cleaning—they will pull that car in the yard so that they can mop the floors or wipe down the hard surface.” An incident on the Red Line that caught everyone’s attention was reported in February when CTA rider Michael Moore filmed a homeless woman on board with a bag that held “hundreds and hundreds” of bugs. Moore filmed the bugs that visibly crawled inside her bag. When Moore alerted the conduc-

tor, the transit system took the train car out of service to clean and disinfect the area, but he said he witnessed the woman boarding again. Reports of bed bugs have become a re-occurring concern as commuters document their own concerns via social media. As a daily rider, Pryor understands the fast turnaround and has witnessed the cleaning crews. “It’s not just about cleaning up around homeless people. Whatever they see on the floor, they sweep it. If they see paper, they may pick it up. Unfortunately, sometimes they don’t get to my car because the train sometimes leaves back out. It’s a really quick turnaround.” As the cultural make-up changes past 35th Street on the Red Line while the train cars transport predominately Black commuters to its final destination at 95th Street, Kevin Arnold says, “It gets rougher on the Red and Green line when you hit Roosevelt Road heading southbound. People start selling weed and cigarettes.” Regardless, both Pryor and Arnold feel the CTA has improved in areas when it comes to faster arrival times and less delays. The surveillance system is one of the best in the country to catch criminals in the act, which has instilled more commuter confidence in public safety. “We work very closely with the Chicago Police Department (CPD). We have one of the largest security camera networks than any transit agency in the country,” said Steele. “We have 23,000 cameras on our trains, buses and stations so that helps the service. If a crime does occur, we’re able in many cases to pull the video and work with the CPD to identify a suspect and make an arrest. We have a really strong track record in that regard.” In addition, Steele adds, “I think it’s important for customers to know that we’re being both proactive and responsive as it relates to this issue.” The Threshold program is a partnership the agency has with the city. He says, “We are able to reach out to the homeless on an individual basis to let them know shelter, mental and health service is available. That’s been a strong partnership.” The program’s officials hope that more homeless individuals get the services offered, but many will not due to mental health illness and oftentimes— pride. Working as the Minority Veterans Program Coordinator (MVPC), Floretta Strong-Pulley gives many of her vet clients a bit of advice. “Don’t let your pride defeat your purpose. Sometimes our vets are good for that. Which I understand—I tell them that they fought for their country so they have to fight for their benefits.”

Alderman Report Card: Anthony Beale By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer This week’s alderman report shifts its focus to Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood to highlight the accomplishments of 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale. Beale has served the 9th Ward since 1999 and has been re-elected to his fifth consecutive term in office. Currently, he’s serving as chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Public Way and the Joint Committee of License and Consumer Protection. Legislation Ald. Beale proposed resolutions for multiple tributes to late individuals, and several dozen handicapped parking permit ordinances passed. His ordinance on Sunday traffic regulation(s) and sign(s) failed to pass on November 18, 2015. Meanwhile, he co-sponsored an amendment of Municipal Code Title 9 concerning public chauffeur licenses and transportation network services. According to a report by the Chicago Sun Times, Beale along with Ald. Edward Burke (14th), introduced a resolution for the Chicago Police Department to utilize technology to learn if motorists were distracted by a cell phone prior to a crash. Schools The 9th Ward isn’t home to many schools but there are a few notable institutions within its confines. Below are the rankings for schools within the 9th Ward based on Chicago Public School’s School Quality Rating Policy. According to CPS’ website, the SQRP measures a school’s annual performance based on but not limited to school culture and climate, student test score performance, student academic growth, attendance, graduation rate, preparation for post-graduation success, and more. CPS’ SQRP ranks schools on a 1+,1, 2+, 2, 3 scale with 1+ being the highest possible score. Gwendolyn Brooks Prep School - 250 E. 111th St., Level 1+. According to the City of Chicago’s Police Department’s CompStats for Week 17 from 2013-2017, there’s been an overall decrease in the number of reported murders, criminal sexual assaults, robberies, aggravated batteries, burglaries, thefts, and motor vehicle thefts from a total of 1,190 to 999 this year. Burglary, robbery and theft, while related, are actually different crimes. Merriam-Webster defines burglary as the act of breaking and entering into a dwelling; theft is the act of stealing; robbery is the act or practice of robbing someone by violence or threat. However, each year saw significant highs for each category of crime. Murder This year, reported murders has increased 100 percent from 2013 from six to now 12. Criminal Sexual Assault Like reported murders, the number of reported incidents of criminal sexual assault has increased to a fourwww.chicagodefender.com

Networks are everything. We spend our lives developing our circles of friendship and business connections. Having relationships with the right people can open doors that might have otherwise been closed. Sometimes, dropping an important name can get you a leg up, but be careful. Several years ago, while trying to get into Gina B. the executive search business, I was interviewing with a large firm and sought the counsel of an acquaintance and former employee of that company. He gave me great insights about the organization and the specific people on my pending interview schedule. He closed our conversation by telling me not to drop his name. He went on to explain that he’d had significant conflicts at that firm and tried to steer me away from having guilt by association. His great advice caused me to re-evaluate my connections and make a concerted effort to tone down my stated affiliations before knowing the entire story. I developed hard and fast rules: 1. Consult prior to name-dropping. If you have a good relationship with the person whose name you want to use, the best question to ask is: “Do you mind if I drop your name?” The answer could contain additional helpful instructions, such as “Yes, tell him that we know each other and that you’re looking for . . . .” or “No, don’t drop my name because . . . “ 2. Don’t overstate your affiliation with anyone. If you’re a casual acquaintance, don’t inflate the depth of your connection or friendship. Running into someone at the occasional business dinner or cocktail party is not the same as “He’s one of my best friends.” There’s a great potential for embarrassment and resulting bad reputation. 3. Do your homework before you name drop. In the event that you don’t have the opportunity to follow rule #1. This is especially important if your connections are political. While the person in your network might be extremely prominent with an enviable list of accomplishments, bear in mind that there could be a large faction with whom they’ve butted heads in the past. Before you state your affiliation, know the history and carefully consider your audience. 4. Understand the difference between social and business connections. You might know a person purely on a social level, without any knowledge of his/ her business practices. While someone might be a good club buddy, he/she might be a terrible business leader. If asked, it’s better to be upfront about the nature of your relationship. 5. If you don’t know ‘em, don’t vouch for ‘em. If someone asks for your opinion of a person who has dropped your name, the person asking trusts your judgment. With trust comes responsibility. Be honest without being slanderous. Maywood Care Center Seeks Assistance For Vets By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer

Congressman Danny Davis and Alderman Toni Foulkes join the staff at Oak Street Health for the 0pening of the Englewood Clinic.

Oak Street Health Opens Englewood Location By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Oak Street Health’s Englewood clinic brings a new health care option to the South Side neighborhood with positive early returns. The new 10,000-square-foot clinic in Englewood is nestled in the northwest corner of the Englewood Square shopping center located at 850 W. 63rd St. A spokeswoman for Oak Street Health told the Chicago Defender that 18 employees for the clinic were hired from the surrounding community. The Englewood clinic marks the 20th healthcare center to open in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, including locations already established in Austin, Garfield Park, Bronzeville, and Ashburn neighborhoods. Oak Street asserts it specializes in providing holistic healthcare to communities in need through a variety of consumer convenience practices. Mike Pykosz, CEO and co-founder of Oak Street Health, said the company offers a “different model” of care and services such as travel assistance, an on-site community room, additional time with physicians, among other practices that separate it from the competition. He said Oak Street is “extremely proud” of its ability to be a part of the community. “We need to make sure we are hiring from the community, we need to make sure that we are not just in our clinic but we are out in the community doing outreach events, working with all of the local organizations and supporting them as well,” said Pykosz. “At the end of the day, supporting our patients, caring for our patients, and ensuring that residents who should be our patients are benefiting from us; you can’t do that effectively if you’re not working in the community.” Pykosz called the health care landscape “complex” in light of the uncertainty facing the Affordable Care Act. “What we try to stay focused on is providing higher quality care, providing better experiences to our patients, bringing that to our patients regardless of their ability to pay for it; and we know if we do that no matter what happens in the regulatory environment, whatever laws change, if we stay focused on those goals, we will be successful on what we can control,” said Pykosz. Ald. Toni Foulkes (16th Ward) explained the location of the newest Oak Street Health location

at 63rd and Halsted is advantageous to the community. She said in recent years local residents would visit Holy Cross Hospital or St. Bernard Hospital’s emergency room as their location for primary health care. She said she’s continuously stressed the importance of preventive health care. “[Oak Street Health] is coming at the right place, at the right time,” said Foulkes. “I don’t think we could ever have too many health clinics.” Foulkes said Oak Street Health is fulfilling one of her campaign promises from her first campaign in 2007 where she called for more health care options “within walking distance.” Reverend Leslie Sanders of Hope Presbyterian Church was one of the several community stakeholders to attend the press conference. He said he was “excited” about Oak Street’s corporate model and their ability to bring services to the people in need within the greater Englewood community. He said Oak Street is proving itself to be a corporate citizen of the community. “This is just another part of anchoring and rebuilding this community and taking it to the next level,” said Sanders. “This whole Englewood Square complex is providing opportunities for jobs and to have things in our community to benefit our community During the grand opening press conference, Dr. Julie Morita, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health and Congressman Danny K. Davis were recognized as honorary guest speakers and offered their remarks in support of the new Oak Street location. Dr. Morita referenced Healthy Chicago 2.0, a plan launched in 2016 by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), with a directive to ensure all city residents have access to al manner of health care resources. She said the opening of the Oak Street clinic helps improve “health equity”. “To have partners like Oak Street stepping up to provide services in communities with great need is really remarkable,” said Morita. Davis, who joked that at his seasoned age he could make use of the clinic, said that the clinic meets a great need. “I can’t leave without thinking that if we didn’t have Medicare and Medicaid, none of this would really be possible,” said Davis. “And so when I hear people talking about [not] allowing those payment instruments and sources, I become fearful.”

06 May 17 - 23, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The Maywood Care Center (MCC) did not wait until Memorial Day weekend to honor its veterans nor advocate for safer streets on their behalf. MCC is a multi-level senior living facility located in the Austin neighborhood at 5905 W. Washington Ave. MCC administrators and staff invited 29th Ward Ald. Chris Taliaferro to an award ceremony for several of the veterans residing inside the nursing home’s walls. Honorees received a lapel pin depicting two United States flags waving in opposite directions and a certificate of accomplishment for their service in one of the branches in the United States’ armed forces. The certificate included a seal from the the branch of the military in which the honoree served. Andrea Williams, activity director at MCC, said it’s important to recognize veterans for their service and mentioned that one of the honorees shed tears of joy during the ceremony. Eunice Sanders, director of business development and marketing for Everest Health Care, described veterans as “our forgotten communities.” She said she’s working to certify the building through the United States’ Department of Veterans Affairs. “What we’re doing is starting a new thing for our facility of recognizing our veterans who are in our building,” said Sanders. Ald. Taliaferro called the invitation to the ceremony a “honor” and congratulated the award recipients and their families for their service. He said he served with the National Guardsman and in the U.S. Marine Corps. He pledged to make sure all veterans have access to all available resources and services. “I think we have to work diligently to make sure that the abundance of opportunities that are available through the [City of Chicago] reaches them. We don’t want any of our veterans to miss out on any of the opportunities that can be provided to them,” said Taliaferro. Addressing Violence Unfortunately, honoring veterans wasn’t the only reason Williams and Sanders requested an audience with the alderman. Williams said gun violence surrounding the MCC has discouraged staff from escorting residents on nature walks throughout the community. She said she hoped by meeting with the Taliaferro that inroads to address the community’s gun violence would be made. Following the veterans’ ceremony, Williams, Sanders and another member of MCC’s staff held a private meeting with the alderman. Williams suggested too that MCC wants to take a larger role within the community as both a partner and stakeholder. Taliaferro explained it’s important that all community leaders and stakeholders do their best to address violence. He suggested the creation of strong, interactive block clubs that partner with the Chicago Police Department and neighborhood residents as an option. “I think that we just have to work harder, better, and smarter in reducing gun violence in the city,” said Taliaferro. He said he wants to continue to support the efforts being made by the Chicago Police Department. “I think we need to do more,” said Taliaferro. “I’ve always been one to say we cannot back down from a challenge. The challenge to the police department is to develop better initiatives that will help address the violence.” Recently, the number of crime related incidents surrounding MCC is among the lowest on Chicago’s West Side. According to the Chicago Police Department’s ClearMap crime summary, in the last 90 days the 15th district, where MCC is located, ranks in the bottom third of recorded criminal incidents. Furthermore, MCC is located on the border of the 1512 and 1513 CPD beats in the 15th district which both have witnessed significantly fewer reports of crime than their neighboring beats to the east. Combined, the 1512 and 1513 beats have witnessed 132 reported acts of crime compared to the 1522 and 1523 beats located east of Central Ave. with 201 reported acts of crime. www.chicagodefender.com

EDUCATION

Gifted Black Kids Thrive at Stem-Based Public Boarding High School By Shari Noland Defender Executive Editor Kendall Byrd had her doubts when she attended a presentation by Quintin Backstrom, an admissions counselor from the Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA), a public boarding high school for gifted kids based in Aurora. It only took 10 minutes for Byrd, a Homewood-Flossmoor (HF) High School freshman at the time, to change her attitude. “At first I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ll just check it out. I’m probably not interested in going to boarding school and being away from home for three years. Literally, upon 10 minutes of listening to the presentation, I was like, ‘I have to go here. This is where I belong,’” said Byrd. Strong words from a student who was already attending HF, an academically robust and diverse institution with great teachers, a competitive sports program, and many successful students of color. So why would Kendall leave? “Because at HF, which was great, they had Physics and AP Chemistry and different things like that. At IMSA, you had like Environmental Chemistry, and Advanced Chemistry, and Astronomy, and Physics Sound and Light, and Modern Physics. All these different, specific niche science and math courses that I was super interested in taking and being more versed in. That’s what appealed to me about the IMSA experience,” said Byrd, who graduated from IMSA in 2013 and is now a senior at Swarthmore College. She has already secured a job after she graduates in New York City at BuzzFeed creating videos. IMSA attracts students from all over the state with more than 50 counties in Illinois represented. About half of the kids, who live in seven residence halls, are from the greater Chicago area. You’d think living away from home would be hard at such a young age. Malik Roberson, a current IMSA senior from Bolingbrook, says it was tough at first. “The first few weeks here I went home every weekend because I missed being home. I missed the home-cooked meals and my mom helping me with laundry, things like that. Over the years, I learned how to live by myself. I stay more weekends now, and taking care of myself has been a lot easier. Now, I’ll be more prepared for college living,” said Roberson. Roberson, who is planning to study Aerospace Engineering at IIT in the fall, has set a goal of building the world’s fastest skateboard. He’s already got funding to get his project off the ground. “About a year ago in January, I saw a YouTube video where I watched someone build one. I was like, ‘I can do that. It won’t be too bad.’ My first one was very sketchy, like things duct-taped together to a Walmart deck. Over the years, I made my own deck, got new enclosures, things like that. I was going about 20 miles per hour and thought, ‘Well, this is fast. I’m getting bored of this.’ I looked at the world record www.chicagodefender.com

The record speed is 70 miles per hour,” said Roberson. He’s working with Sherman Jenkins, chair of the board, Quad County African American Chamber of Commerce. And Roberson will help the organization by writing articles to engage African Americans in STEM fields. “Even if I am not successful in my endeavor to break the world record, it could

be a good talking point for people who are interested in STEM. Showing that it’s not all about here are machines and here’s industry. It can be something that you can do in your basement or something you can do in a workshop that benefits you and is a fun way to learn,” said Roberson Roberson and Byrd are among many talented kids of color who attend and find success at IMSA, but it’s not easy to get in. Naturally, those who apply are gifted students with a strong passion for science and engineering and very high GPAs. Ultimately, the admission team is seeking kids who can reach their fullest potential at IMSA in a way that they wouldn’t at

their home schools. “That can be the student who is coming in with the perfect SAT scores and is looking for a new challenge. Or it could be the student who has run out of math classes their freshman year of high school because they’re from a very urban district or a very rural district, where they’ve just accelerated past what the school is able to offer. We talk a lot about the ‘excellence gap,’ and trying to help students when teachers, due to scarce resources, are teaching to the bottom of the class. How do we help those at the top of the class continue to excel and move forward like Malik and Kendall?” said Dr. Jeff Margolis, vice president of external engagement and an IMSA alum.

Black Christian Pioneer Receives Lifetime Achievement Award The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association recognizes Melvin E. Banks’ “pioneering work in innovation, diversification, and contextualization of Christian education materials.” By Shari Noland Defender Executive Editor Back in 1970, Black consciousness was at its peak. Some people looked at Christianity as a White man’s religion because of the overall lack of support by the White Evangelical community during the Civil Rights Movement. That sentiment was backed up by the fact that if you picked up any type of Christian publication, picture book, or anything at all that had to do with Christianity, the people in it were White. Melvin E. Banks, who worked at Scripture Press at the time, felt called to change that Eurocentric narrative when he founded UMI (Urban Ministries, Inc.). “We needed images of Blacks on publications so that young people could see that there are people who believe in the faith and who are involved in doing things and that there always has been,” said Stanley Long, who is on UMI’s Board of Directors and was there with Banks from the very beginning, encouraging him along the way. “What Mel did was come up with a way in which we could respond and at the same time answer the challenges and have some kind of impact on the community both psychologically as well as historically and spiritually.” UMI is now one of the largest African American owned media firms in the country with millions in sales and over 250 employees and contractors. The corporate headquarters, based in Calumet City, is a 50,000-square-foot facility built in the mid-90s and the company has served over 50,000 churches nationally and internationally since its founding. UMI also has grown to serve as a publishing partner for over a dozen African American denominations. Banks’ success was recently honored by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), which awarded him with the Kenneth N. Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his “pioneering work in innovation, diversification, and contextualization of Christian education materials.” “I would load up my trunk and go from city to city and in that way we were able to get the word out that we had a new product that we believed could help churches because it was speaking to the issues. We included African American young people as photographs in the publication. For the first time, they were gaining a sense of esteem by seeing themselves portrayed in the publication,” said Banks. But those early years were difficult. Banks struggled financially for years to keep the company afloat. Initially, he was able to garner seed money from early in-

Because I think that I would have and I think any normal person would have. But Mel would just not give up,” said Long. “He just stayed with it and I think if you were to ask, ‘Why didn’t you quit?’ He would probably say, because he really felt it was what God told him to do. This was his mission. And he engaged his wife and his children and they all worked together, trying to keep it going. But it was very difficult in those very early years.” Because he didn’t give up, today, those images are on publications for all age levels, websites, apps, videos, documentaries and more. The company has partnered with major corporate giants like Sony

and McDonald’s, as well as well-known Christian names like T.D. Jakes and Mark Barnett and Roma Downey’s “The Bible” miniseries. “The work of Dr. Banks and UMI, with unique publications distributed in the millions around the country and around the world, has changed our lives and touched our community like no other company has,” said Jeff Wright, CEO of UMI. Banks was born in Birmingham, Ala., and at the age of 12 was inspired by a man who quoted Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” God used that verse to lead him to make a commitment that his life should be dedicated to sharing God’s knowledge with God’s people. In 1955, he graduated from Moody Bible Institute and married Olive Perkins. He went on to attend Wheaton College,

where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology and a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies. He was later awarded an honorary doctorate by Wheaton College and served for many years as a board member of this institution. “Sometimes people ask me, ‘Mel what was your secret in bringing UMI to where it is today?’ And in a real sense it’s really not a secret. It’s finding a cause that’s worth giving your life to, and once you identified whatever abilities God has given you, to stick with it. There are good days and bad days. Things go well. Things don’t always go well, but when there is that commitment to complete the job that you’re convinced God gave you, looking to him and getting the encouragement from him and from others, that’s sort of been the way that God had led us,” said Banks. www.chicagodefender.com

Did You Know That Shakespeare Knew the Word? Holy Shakespeare! Book Signing Wednesday, May 24 Oak Park Public Library 7-9 p.m. By Shari Noland Defender Executive Editor Holy Shakespeare! 101 Scriptures That Appear in Shakespeare’s Plays, Poems, and Sonnets is a new book by bestselling author Maisie Sparks. In the new book, Sparks pairs lines from Shakespeare with the Biblical scriptures that more than likely gave him inspiration or thought. According to Sparks, in the era that Shakespeare lived, people were very familiar with the Bible. Children grew up learning to read by reading the Bible. Minstrels came to town and put on plays with scenes from the Bible. And Shakespeare, as most people in that time, was very familiar with scripture. When he started writing, it was very easy for that kind of language or understanding to end up into his plays, Maisie explains. In the past two years, Maisie has had three books published: 151 Things God Can’t Do, a devotional and coloring book called Christmas Quiet, and Holy Shakespeare! That’s not an easy feat. The Chicago Defender talked to the inspirational local author, whose books have sold over 200,000 copies, about what inspired her to write her latest trove, what she hopes people will take away from it, and her advice for new authors on whether to self-publish or seek a publisher. How did you come up with the idea of writing about Bible scriptures and Shakespeare? I wish I could take credit for that, but not totally. It was because I had written 151 Things God Can’t Do that the publisher thought I could research an idea for them, and they contacted me last January. What they were looking for was prayers in Shakespeare. When I started to do the research, I wasn’t coming across prayers, but I was finding a lot of Bible verses and Bible imagery and scriptural sentiments. I got back to them, and I said, “That’s what I’m finding.” They said, “Okay, go ahead. Let’s do that and see how it comes out.” Can you give me some examples of how you connected Shakespeare and Scriptures? Matthew 5:9 says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.” This is what Shakespeare says in King Henry VI, “Blessed are the peacemakers on earth.” Then, Romans 12:21 says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” Shakespeare says in All’s Well that Ends Well, “We must do good against evil.” It goes on and on. A third one is Romans 13:10: “Love does not evil to his neighbor, therefore is love the fulfilling of the law.” In Love’s Labour’s Lost, Shakespeare said, “For charity itself,” charity being love, “fulfills the law.” Let me say this also. I’m not the first person who has noticed this. Quite frankwww.chicagodefender.com

I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from homeschool parents who are trying to give their children an introduction to the classics. It’s a way for them to merge and weave together some principles that they want to share with their children. ly, from the time of Shakespeare this has been written about, and probably back then people didn’t even think much of it because they heard it in every area of life. Shakespeare was also known for borrowing from the classics before him. It would have been quite natural. I’m not saying he plagiarized or anything like that. But I think all writers often look at other literature and see what they can draw from it. Of course, the Bible is a book that throughout the ages people have gone to get some understanding of life. What do you hope that people in gen-

eral will take away from your book? There are a couple of things. First of all, it’s just the fact that some people might have shied away from Shakespeare, and I was certainly one of those people when I was studying him in high school and college, not knowing that there is so much scripture embedded in his writing. It has made a lot of people take a second look at Shakespeare. It’s also made people take a second look at scripture. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from homeschool parents who are trying to give their children an introduction to the classics. It’s a

way for them to merge and weave together some principles that they want to share with their children. It’s giving people what I would call a fresh look at his work, as well as a heightened awareness of God’s word, because sometimes we look at these great authors and we think it was all coming from them. It really wasn’t. He had another source. I want people to be at least aware of that. What advice would you give emerging writers? They probably will want to think in pairs or think in sequels or how else can an idea or a format that they came up with work in other areas. Because I am now looking at some ways to put together scripture with Bible timelines. I don’t want to get into too much of that because I’m still developing it. But now that I’ve come up with a format that is identifiable to me and the publisher, it’s how can we expand on that to write other books in a very simple format that people can easily grasp? Did you ever consider self-publishing? I started 25 years ago as a self-publisher. I wouldn’t knock it because it moved me into getting a publisher. There’s such a proliferation of self-published books today that it’s much harder to break through because the whole publishing space has changed. As far as the distributors, there are not as many distributors of books. I think a publisher can help you get in front of your audience better than you can as a self-publisher. That said, if you are someone who has your own audience, self-publishing can give you a platform to sell your books directly to your audience. Let’s say you are a pastor of a large church or you are a woman who gives conferences, and you’re speaking in front of large groups of people all the time. Then, you could take your sales numbers to a publisher if you wanted to do that, and then get more national or international exposure. I have had my book reviewed in London, of course, because that’s where Shakespeare lived. If you have a book that has global appeal, a publisher gives you a better opportunity to get in front of those audiences. The other thing that I see with a publisher is that the books are usually much better designed than a lot of self-published books, which look a little self-published. That can deter some buyers from purchasing your book unless you are right there and they know you and who you are. I think if you’re not there, your book needs to stand on its own. That’s where the design of your book will come in. I will say, sometimes people feel that it’s hard to get a publisher. I would say it’s identifying the right person in the publishing company that would be interested in your particular content or style of book. I think a lot of people spin their wheels sending their manuscripts to people who wouldn’t be interested. A little bit more time should be taken to identify the right person within a publishing company who would be interested.

Dorinda Walker: An Inspirational Warrior Tells Her Story to Help Others Overcome Hardships By Donald James A Special for Real Times Media Dorinda Walker has an epic story to tell. It’s a story of growing up with heroin-addicted parents, physical abuse, suicide attempts, dropping out of high school, exploring street life, and much more. Yet, Walker refused to allow the early chapters of her life story to dictate the latter chapters, because today, she is vice president of multicultural marketing for a Fortune 100 Corporation. For Walker, growing up in New Jersey was rooted in dysfunctionality. “My father’s side of the family, for the most part, were gangsters, drug dealers, and number runners,” she explained. “My mother came from a well-educated family. However, she got involved in drugs.” Walker said her mother was a functional heroin-addict. To support her habit, she worked as a legal secretary and paralegal, but she was caught one day stealing at a local supermarket. Walker, a little girl at the time, was with her. Facing a judge,

Walker’s mother had to choose between jail or rehab; she chose rehab. As a result, Walker went to live with her father, who she described as a street hustler who sold pills in the 1970s to subsidize his heroin habit. During an altercation over $10, Walker said her father killed a man and was sent to prison. Walker again lived with her mother, who was now released from rehab. This living arrangement included a man, who her mother met in rehab. He was physically abusive to both Walker and her mother. “I felt that I was alone and didn’t have a voice,” Walker recalled. “I was afraid because I was shuffled around and abused. I was afraid if I had a voice I would have been considered a burden and thrown away. Therefore, I developed very low self-esteem, became angry and rebelled. In the 7th grade, I began getting failing grades. I had fights every day in school and was suspended.” The fall of 8th grade, Walker’s father, according to Walker, was released from prison. Wanting to distance herself from the physical abuse dispensed by her moth-

Dorinda Walker speaks about how she overcame her past to become a corporate executive. er’s boyfriend, Walker reunited with her father, who was living in the projects with his girlfriend. Things went well, said Walker, until her father was diagnosed with AIDS. Walker was devastated and reacted. “I dropped out of school, began selling drugs, and didn’t have any moral integrity,” she said. “I was dating older men and drug dealers. I also supplied my dad’s heroin habit. He was in and out of the hospital many times due to his condition. He felt God was punishing him for introducing my mother to drugs, for not being a good parent, and for killing a man.” Walker said her father eventually died, and her mother disappeared. Finding it difficult to deal with life, Walker, while living on her own, twice attempted suicide. Eventually, through what she called, “God’s grace,” Walker went to live with an aunt, who she said had a successful professional career. Ultimately, Walker met a man, fell in love, married, and began having children. Her mother, whom she had not seen in 18 months, resurfaced with a crack addition. After going through rehab, once again, she relapsed. Walker’s mother asked to move in with Dorinda. “Mom, there comes a time in one’s life when you have to love someone from a distance,” Walker told her mother. “I love you, but I cannot allow you to live with me and my family. I can’t subject my children, or myself, to your drug addiction anymore.” That was a defining moment in their relationship. Dorinda recall’s her mom telling her years later, “No, was the best gift you ever gave me.” It forced her mom to choose between her love of family and her addiction of crack, and she chose family. They subsequently enjoyed 16 years of living in a three-family home along with

Dorinda’s maternal grandmother. Walker’s mother was later diagnosed with cancer for a second time. “She died while in hospice care at my house,” Walker said. “I gave her something that I was not able to give my father, which was forgiveness. My forgiveness allowed her to die in peace.” Today, Walker and her husband of 24 years have three children and one granddaughter. Walker is also a successful corporate executive of multicultural marketing for a Fortune 100 Company. Independent of her professional work, Walker shares her life story with regularity with at-risk youth, drug addicts, and struggling women. While there are many tenets that Walker believes are liberators to one’s difficult past, there’s one that towers over the others. “Forgiveness,” Walker said. “You have to have the ability to forgive people; if you don’t, you carry a weight that prevents you from living a life of joy and abundance.” Walker is now ready to tell her riveting story in a new book and is looking at options about a movie and / or television series about her life. “I believe my story will benefit and empower people,” she said. “Many people may not be struggling with the same issues I had. But, if they are struggling, and don’t know how to overcome it, I want them to trust in the higher power of God. Because if I made it, they can too!” For more information about Dorinda Walker, or to book her as an inspirational/ motivational speaker, call 310.677.4540, or log on to www.dorindawalker.com. Public Policy Expert Discusses the Impact of Segregation By Adeshina Emmanuel Defender Guest Writier Daniel K. Hertz is a smart guy who loves data, maps, and Chicago neighborhoods. I first came across him about five years ago as a young reporter at DNAinfo Chicago, where I covered the Uptown and Andersonville neighborhoods. The public policy buff was a graduate student at the University of Chicago then who ran a blog titled City Notes, providing a wealth of information about urban planning and Chicago neighborhoods, including maps that illustrated the scourge of racial segregation in Chicago, one of the nation’s most diverse -- yet most divided -- cities. I reached out to Hertz to talk about segregation, integration, and the forces driving them. Despite increased mingling among races, for all sorts of reasons, including as he calls it “straight racism,” there is an unwillingness of other races to move into Black neighborhoods. That has very real consequences for the quality of life in Black neighborhoods, whether it’s fewer or inadequate amenities, economic divestment, and public safety problems, Hertz said. Adeshina Emmanuel: When you look at a map of Chicago, if you were to imagine everything color-coded according to race, what would you see? Daniel K. Hertz: You’d have sort of stripes coming out of downtown in different directions. There would be a stripe along the lakefront that would be mostly White. As you moved counter clockwise away from the lake to the left, you’d get a mixed White/Latino stripe and a more heavily Latino stripe. Straight west from the Loop, you would have a stripe of almost entirely Black neighborhoods. If you kept going counterclockwise down to the Southwest, you’d have another stripe of Latino neighborhoods, and another stripe of Black neighborhoods heading straight south from Downtown. In a few places you’d have little patches that were different than the areas around them. There would be a patch of the Asian-American community in Chinatown, parts of Bridgeport and northern Bronzeville. You’d have a pretty mixed patch in Hyde Park along the south lakefront. Some mixed patches in places like Beverly. That’s pretty much what you’d see. AE: How would you characterize that map you described in terms of segregation? DKH: As segregated pie slices, with some zones of intermingling. AE: Has that picture changed much since 1990? DKH: Yes, it has. Probably the

area that’s changed the most is the Southwest Side, and maybe parts of the Far Northwest Side, too. Neighborhoods that in 1990 and 1980 were overwhelmingly White are now in some cases majority Latino or have significant Latino population. So, thinking about neighborhoods like Midway on the Southwest Side and neighborhoods like Jefferson Park on the Far Northwest Side that have really seen substantial changes in the last couple decades. And the nearer Northwest Side, the Blue Line corridor up to Logan Square, areas that were very Latino in 1990 are significantly Whiter -- and that’s also true to some extent going further along the lakefront north of Uptown in areas like Edgewater and Rogers Park, although those areas are still fairly mixed. AE: What about Black neighborhoods? DKH: Black neighborhoods have definitely seen the least racial change in the past couple decades. The city and the metro area have become less segregated in the past couple decades but that’s been almost entirely from Black people moving into areas that previously didn’t have any Black people, rather than Whites, Asians, and Latinos moving to Black neighborhoods. That said, since 2000 or so, there are some indications that in a few places that’s starting to happen. I mentioned northern Bronzeville, that is an area that had a large majority Black population. But increasingly it’s been more Asian-American. There’s a pocket of northern Austin on the West Side that has a growing minority Latino population, and then in the border between Garfield Park and the greater West Loop or Near West Side. You’re beginning to see a little bit of Whites moving into what had been almost an entirely Black neighborhood, and that’s also happening a little bit in northern Kenwood and Oakland, and a little bit in Woodlawn just south of Hyde Park. But those are really the exceptions to the rule; most Black neighborhoods have not seen that type of mixing. AE: But what do you think explains these exceptions to the rule? DKH: One thing that is really important is that neighborhood change in Chicago basically always happens with one neighborhood’s population bleeding over into the next one. People don’t just jump all the way across the city, and that’s certainly the case for those examples. With Kenwood and Woodlawn, you can see it as the White population in Hyde Park and in southern Kenwood is sort of beginning to push the line. In Garfield Park it’s Whites moving further West from the Near West Side but

also from the north: Ukrainian Village and Humboldt Park. AE: Some people think when White people are sort of peppered around the fringes, that’s the slippery slope toward gentrification for a neighborhood. Is that happening here? Would it be warranted to have any fears of gentrification? DKH: I certainly don’t think there’s any indication that any Black neighborhood in Chicago is going to see an influx of White residents in the way that Wicker Park, Humboldt Park, or Logan Square

have seen, where White people were quite willing to move into these areas in large numbers pretty quickly. That’s just not happening in these Black neighborhoods. AE: Should people feel encouraged by the numbers that say there’s more integration? Is there cause for any celebration? DKH: I probably wouldn’t say celebration. Yeah it’s better than if it was moving in the opposite direction, but this city remains incredibly segregated, and that segregation attracts levels of disinvestment, stigmatization, things

that really impact the quality of life of the people who live in the affected areas. So, no I wouldn’t say it’s cause for celebration. I think there’s reasons to look into the areas that are integrating and especially those interacting with Chicago’s Black population, which is bearing the brunt of the cost of segregation far more than any other group.

CFPB Lawsuit Seeks Consumer Restitution From High-Cost Online Installment Lenders CHARLENE CROWELL NNPA FINANCIAL WRITER

Four online lenders offering high-cost, small-dollar installment loans face a federal lawsuit alleging that the lenders collected on debts that consumers did not legally owe. Filed in late April by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the lawsuit charges online lenders Golden Valley Lending, Silver Cloud Financial, Mountain Summit Financial and Majestic Lake Financial as having engaged in unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts. The lawsuit also alleges the businesses did not make proper disclosures to consumers. Consumers living in 17 states are affected by the lawsuit and include residents of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Ohio. If successful, the lawsuit could result in restitution for affected consumers, ban future loan collections, and civil monetary penalties. According to CFPB, since at least 2012, the lenders sold installment loans valued from $300 and as large as $1,200

www.chicagodefender.com

that carried annual percentage rates from as low as 440 percent to as high as 950 percent. These high interest rates allegedly violate state usury laws and in turn, void all parts of the loans. CFPB alleges that the four corporations unlawfully collected loans as the transactions violated state laws, as well as the federal Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. As such, the firms: •Failed to disclose the real cost of credit, including the annual percentage rates on the loads made; •Deceived consumers about loan payments that were not owed; and •Collected loan payments which consumers did not owe. “We allege that these companies made deceptive demands and illegally took money from people’s bank accounts. We are seeking to stop these violations and get relief for consumers,” said CFPB Director Richard Cordray. The standard loan repayment schedule was one payment every two weeks or 20 payments over a 10 month period of time. For each payment made, a “servicer fee” was charged, usually $30 for every $100 in outstanding principal, plus 5 percent of the original principal. For example, on an $800 loan, borrow-

ers would actually repay $3,320 over the 10-month repayment schedule. To provide context for just how costly these loans were, in less than six months —from August to December of 2013—two of the firms, Silver Cloud and Golden Valley, originated approximately $27 million in loans, but collected $44 million from consumers. In recent years, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) has advocated against predatory payday and car title lenders who have been pushing longer-term loans that can be as high as $10,000. “For these loans, the packaging is different but the end result is the same: a triple-digit interest rate, long-term loan that is structured to give payday lenders access to borrowers’ bank accounts and keep them stuck in a cycle of unaffordable debt,” said Diane Standaert, a CRL EVP and Director of State Policy. “This growing issue will not be resolved until a combination of legislation, regulation and enforcement are together ensuring that consumers and the financial marketplace will be protected. Complete consumer protection will occur when the financial marketplace is comprised of lenders who serve, rather than exploit, consumers,” Standaert concluded. Last year, CFPB returned $39 million to consumers wronged by unlawful debt col-

lection practices and additionally collected $20 million in civil penalties. As of March 2017, CFPB has returned nearly $12 billion to 29 million Americans harmed by illegal and predatory actions of financial companies. However, CFPB’s ability to continue to protect consumers remains in jeopardy. Recent legislation introduced in the House of Representatives would strip the agency of its authority and independence. The Financial CHOICE Act, dubbed “the Wrong CHOICE Act” by consumer advocates, would reverse consumer protection advanced by CFPB over a range of lending areas. On May 4, the measure was approved by the House Financial Services Committee on a 34-26 vote. A full floor vote on the bill is expected in mid-May. “Among other things, the ‘Wrong CHOICE Act’ would prevent the consumer agency from regulating small dollar loans and initiating enforcement actions against the unfair, deceptive and abusive practices of predatory actors,” said Melissa Stegman, a Senior Policy Counsel with CRL. “This would drastically restrict the CFPB’s ability to protect consumers.” Charlene Crowell is the communications deputy director for the Center for Responsible Lending. Jazzing It Up In The Black Bottom of Detroit TimeLine Theater Company Presents PARADISE BLUE Playwright Dominique Morisseau Director Ron OJ Parsons Now Playing April 26 – July 23 By Rick & Brenda McCain Defender Contributing Writers When I ask people about music in Detroit, most would immediately think of Barry Gordy and that great Motown sound. But before there was Motown, Detroit had a remarkable jazz history in an area known as Black Bottom, a predominantly Black neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. Black Bottom was a term used to apply to the entire community, which included Paradise Valley. The community got its distinctive name from early French colonial settlers because of the river floods that produced rich bottomland soils. The area slowly changed when African Americans from the South began to migrate to Detroit in vast numbers to seek economic opportunities and respite from the concentrated racism of the American South. “Black Bottom/Paradise Valley” is where the Detroit roots migrated into the melodic sounds of great Jazz music. This infamous place is where African Americans created an oasis for a better life due to continuing ethnic succession. It is where, in the 1940s, Blacks established a community of Black-owned businesses, social institutions, and night clubs. Regular performers included Blues, Big Band, and Jazz artists such as Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billy Eckstine, Pearl Bailey, and Count Basie. Unfortunately, the historic community is also the place where one of the most controversial episodes of mass gentrification happened in Detroit history. The virtually all-White city government bulldozed “Black Bottom,” the beloved ancestral home of many metro Detroit’s African Americans. “Paradise Blue” is set in Detroit, Michigan, in 1949 on the downtown strip known as Paradise Valley, where a gifted trumpeter and distressed owner of the Paradise nightclub by the name of Blue is consid-

As the occupants of his famed but failing jazz club ponder their choices and dream of a better life, relationships and friendships are tested. Then when things seem like they can’t get even worse, new trials emerge as a mysterious woman arrives to turn their world upside down. As the destiny of all their lives looms in the darkness of uncertainty, they must decide whether to fight to save what’s theirs or risk it all for a chance of redemption. However, Blue holds the key to everyone’s future and he’s not sharing his plans with anyone. He is fearful of his past and is afraid that his present life has no future if he stays where his life has ended. His closest friend summed up Blue’s life in this very poignant statement, “He wanted to be Big but the world wanted him small.” Blue is loved, hated, misunderstood and troubled, but he never stops believing that if he can hit the one golden note, that musical masterpiece that can make or break a musician, he will be free of the things that haunt him the most and purge his soul from the agony of his memories. Playwright Dominique Morisseau delivers with a vibrant and intriguing plot where she goes beyond the headlines to tell a deeper story about Detroit in that era and how the troubles of one’s mind can literally destroy everyone’s future. Director Ron OJ Parson directed this

play and masterfully emerged this journey back in time to be relevant in today’s society, where making poignant decisions can affect the people within our lives. The cast jelled together like seasoned pros who had been working together for years and they delivered such a grand performance that we found ourselves empathizing with each character. You felt the agony of Blue (played by Al’Jaleel McGhee) trapped in his own mind searching for a moral way out of his immoral beginnings. You understood the misguided loyalty and devotion of a woman, Pumpkin (Kristin E. Ellis), who believed in standing by her man no matter what, even if it came with the cost of physical abuse. You also found yourself intrigued by a sultry gun-toting mystery woman, Tyla Abercrumbie (Silver), who had a plan of deception to succeed as a woman in times of uncertainty by any means necessary. Each character brought an unforgettable scene to Paradise Blue with a surprising end that left us speechless! We highly recommend “Paradise Blue.” You will definitely be entertained! Black Doctors Earn Less Than White Doctors: Report Says

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Contributor African-American physicians earn 15 percent less than White physicians— an average of $262,000 compared to $303,000—according to Medscape’s 2017 Physicians Compensation Report. Approximately 19,200 physicians across 26 areas of medicine were asked questions about annual compensation, race, gender, geography and job satisfaction. The report, detailed by CBS News, revealed that African-American doctors are less likely to say they feel fairly compensated, with only half agreeing that they’re earning what they should. “Fifty-percent of African-American physicians don’t feel fairly compensated,” the report’s editor Leslie Kane, a senior director of Medscape Business of Medicine, told CBS. Racial and gender discrimination may certainly be a factor, Kane said, but there are other factors as well. For example, if a doctor treats more Medicaid patients, their reimbursement is

usually lower, since employer-insured patients tend to pay better. How many hours a doctor works and whether they’re in private practice or a clinic can also explain some inequities in pay. “Tons of factors play into how much a physician makes,” she said. The survey found that the gender pay gap is narrower among younger doctors. Male doctors ages 55 to 69 make 27 percent more than women, but the divide shrinks to 18 percent in physicians under the age of 34. Being a doctor pays well, but there are still major discrepancies when it comes to paychecks within the medical profession. For the first time, the annual report looked at race as well as gender and other factors, revealing some significant disparities in pay. Physicians’ annual salaries averaged $294,000, with specialists earning about $100,000 more than primary care doctors. Overall, average pay has risen by $88,000 over the seven years Medscape has been conducting this survey—an increase attributed to intense competition

for doctors among hospitals and health care systems. The three highest-paying specialties were orthopedics (average annual compensation: $489,000), plastic surgery ($440,000) and cardiology ($410,000). They earned well over twice as much as the average pediatrician ($202,000) and family physician ($209,000), the two lowest-paying categories. A deeper dive into the data shows male doctors take home bigger paychecks in both primary care and specialty areas such as orthopedics and surgery. Male primary care physicians made 15 percent more than women in 2016, while male specialists earned 31 percent more than their female colleagues. Part of the reason may be that women are more likely to choose lower-paying specialties, Kane said. “One of the things we look at is why there is this overall disparity. We look at what specialties women are going into and they go into less well-paying areas,” she said. “Fifty-three percent of pediatricians are women, one of the lowest paid specialties. Thirty-nine percent of family physicians

are women, also a lower-paying area,” Kane said. When it comes to the more highly paid medical specialties, only 9 percent of women are orthopedists and only 20 percent of general surgeons are female, Kane added. African-American doctors typically work in primary care rather than specialties, the survey noted. The annual compensation survey delved into race for the first time, said Kane, who has edited the report for seven years. The report revealed higher salaries in rural states. Doctors in North Dakota are the highest paid in the U.S. followed by Alaska, South Dakota and Nebraska. Washington D.C. counts as the lowest, while New York hovers toward the bottom of the list, which Kane and others chalk up to supply and demand; plenty of doctors cluster in big cities, while rural areas need to offer more money to attract staff. Patients may be glad to know that regardless of pay, most doctors like what they do: eight out of 10 physicians said they’d still choose medicine if they had the chance to pick a career all over again. www.chicagodefender.com
