Defender Contributing Writer Chima Enyia did not tell anyone that the state of Illinois would commemorate Biafra Memorial Day on May 30 until the ink from Governor Bruce Rauner’s pen was dry. The 28-year-old Igbo American and son of Biafra War survivors has been working slowly and steadily toward this goal for the past seven years—first as an intern in former Governor Pat Quinn’s office, rising to become associate director of the Illinois Department of Revenue. “I found in the workplace, you can’t just throw culture in someone’s face,” Enyia says. “You have to lay the groundwork for them to get bits and nuggets about who you are.” Enyia started by wearing traditional Igbo dress on Fridays and taking egusi soup to work. He would invite coworkers to see him perform the Igbo War Dance at Igbofest, a Chicago event with a 30year history, or to go out for a meal at Little Unicoco, a recently opened Nigerian restaurant in Rogers Park. “That makes conversations around issues of culture like the Biafra War much easier to have,” says Enyia, a Bronzeville resident. And he had plenty of those conversations as he laid the groundwork to finally talk to governor’s office staff about issuing a statement to mark the 50th anniversary of the Biafra War. In a letter signed by Governor Bruce Rauner this year, the state of Illinois honors the victims of the 1967 Nigerian civil war and “urge[s] all citizens to strive to overcome hatred and indifference through learning, tolerance, and remembrance.” For Enyia, who was born in Chicago after his parents moved to America seeking higher education, the “second” Memorial Day has an additional meaning—that a new generation of Igbo Americans has grown up and is keeping their culture alive in their own ways. A Half-Century Ago On May 30, 1967, following a series of military coups and violent persecution of the Igbo people, Biafra (a southeastern region populated mainly by Igbos) declared independence from Nigeria. That precipitated a two-and-half year civil war in which the west African nation fought to reabsorb Biafra, an oil-rich region; by the time the war ended in 1970, it’s estimated that between 500,000 and 2 million Biafrans died of starvation. Much like the current war in Syria, the world largely forgot about the Biafra War until images circulated in western media. For Syria, it was barrel bombings and

The Enyia Family chemical weapons attacks shared on social media that created public outcry; for Biafra, it was images of starving children on television that sparked humanitarian aid in 1969. Modern relief organizations, including Doctors Without Borders, formed as a direct response to Biafra. Enyia, the youngest of six siblings (including sister Amara Enyia who ran for mayor of Chicago in 2015), heard stories of Biafra from his parents, Samuel and Irene. When the war broke out, Samuel fought on the front lines as a battalion commander; Irene wanted to fight, but due to gender restrictions, became a field medic instead. In 1975, the Enyias immigrated to the Chicago area for higher education and remained politically active in the Igbo community, locally and globally, while also Enyia’s parents—who now hold multiple graduate degrees—are leaders in the local Igbo community and helped form the Igbo World Congress in 1994. They also co-authored a book together, “After Biafra: A Nigerian Igbo Redevelopment Plan.” And so Chima Enyia says he’s always felt the need to honor his parents’ sacrifices and contributions: “How are you going to make your culture come through your work, your professional life? That challenge went unspoken and was issued long ago,” he says. “I think this [Biafra Memorial Day proclamation] is just making good on that challenge.” This is actually the second time he’s persuaded an Illinois governor to sign such a document: In 2015, Governor Pat Quinn recognized Biafra Day as well, an event that Enyia remembers bringing tears to his parents’ eyes. “We made our contributions and now they are making their contributions to society,” says Irene Enyia. “God will use them to do greater things to fulfill their destiny.” Enyia hopes this proclamation on the 50th anniversary carries a different message: it’s time for his generation to step up. Though the second generation never lived through the Biafra War, he says they are ready to take up the mantle to ensure the culture lives on through their own chil-

dren as well. Building New Cultural Touchstones When Chima Enyia was young, every Saturday the Enyia family would visit Uptown’s Equator Club so the siblings could play and learn with other Igbo children. Famous during the height of “world beat music” in the 1990s, that institution has since faded. For a younger generation that left Chicago for a few years for school or work, they returned home to a more fragmented cultural landscape. In 2006, the six Enyia siblings were all back in the city and decided to set up the Umo Igbo Alliance, as a way for young professionals and college students to build community and get involved in cultural activities. In the last ten years, the organization has grown to more than 200 members. Their sister organization, Umo Igbo Unite, is a national organization and has a membership of 2,000. Onyinye Enyia, 35, resurrected the young women’s dance group, a setting in which she remembers learning traditional Igbo maiden dances at age seven. “Every year I wanted to dance with the older girls who were 13 or 14, and every year they would push the age by a year,” Onyinye recalls. She became the coach and lead dancer for a troupe, which has performed all around Chicago including at Igbofest, Lake Forest College, and Northwestern University. “Some dance groups of Igbo Americans have adulterated the dance with hiphop stuff. No, we aren’t doing that. We want to do Igbo dance – without adding in Justin Timberlake moves. We got to do Egwu ukwu: ‘shaking your waist,’” she says. Today she holds a Ph.D in health policy informatics, works to improve health care technology, and has three children now in tow. She has “retired” from the maiden dances, but she still focuses on translating Igbo culture to the next generation. Her latest project, the Igbo Cultural Kids School, will teach Igbo language and culture through song, dance, music, and continued on page 04

This past weekend, I was watching a young man, not even 30, get sentenced to life plus 45 years on MSNBC’s reality TV show “Lockup.” I could tell the guy was smart and personable, but, unfortunately, he made some very bad choices. I can’t help but notice how many people on that show seem to have Shari Noland so much going for them personally, but, for whatever reason, they find themselves trapped in prison for long periods of time. I couldn’t help but think about the people I met last week while working on an upcoming story for the Chicago Defender. Hard-working people who had done time, but who had also decided not to be defined by it. One young man spent 10 years as a drug dealer, but learned that the sales skills and street savviness he honed on the street, if refocused, could give him quite a bit of success in a legit and legal field. The guy’s name is Darius Jones and he’s now the vice president and general manager of Garfield Produce Company, an indoor, vertical hydroponic vegetable farm that creates sustainable local employment and generates wealth in disinvested neighborhoods through the production and sale of high quality fresh produce year-round. Then, a few days after meeting Darius, I visited another organization called Sweet Beginnings, which makes honey (yes, honey!) and personal products all in a very small facility on the West Side. Sweet Beginnings was created with the main purpose of helping ex-cons learn business skills that they can use to get full-time jobs. I saw pride in the faces of people who realized that it wasn’t too late to learn new skills and turn their lives around. I look forward to sharing their stories with you in the upcoming weeks in this newspaper and in video on ChicagoDefender.com. Although we all know that ex-cons face unique challenges when trying to make better choices, I have to admit that the people I met changed my worldview on a lot of fronts. Going back to that TV show “Lockup,” I couldn’t help but wonder as I watched how many of the men I saw featured couldn’t have been a Darius if circumstances were different. If they could see that they might just have skills to turn their lives around if redirected in a positive direction. Much has been discussed about the Cradle to Prison Pipeline Campaign. We know that nationally, according to the Children’s Defense Fund, 1 in 3 Black boys born in 2001 are at risk of imprisonment during their lifetime. When the closest you’ve come to someone who has been in a prison is watching their life story on a TV show or reading a news story, you can’t appreciate the potential that has been lost. I believe some folks didn’t balk at Trump’s suggestion that we call in the National Guard if things get too out of hand here in Chicago because they simply can’t understand what leads to bad choices. Maybe these people should meet a Darius.

Minnesota Officer Charged in Castile Shooting Goes on Trial By AMY FORLITI Associated Press ChicagoDefender.com slide show: 20 Powerful Photos of Resistance MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The graphic video showing Philando Castile’s final moments after he was shot by a Minnesota police officer made headlines nearly a year ago and led to calls for changes in policing. But another video could emerge as key evidence in the case against St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez, who goes on trial for manslaughter this week. Jury selection begins Tuesday and is expected to last at least a couple of days. Key things to know about the case: WHAT HAPPENED? Castile, who was Black, was killed July 6 during a traffic stop in the St. Paul suburb of Falcon Heights. His death got instant attention as the shooting’s gruesome aftermath was streamed live on Facebook by Castile’s girlfriend, who was in the car along with her young daughter. Prosecutors say Yanez shot Castile, a 32-year-old elementary school cafeteria worker, after Castile told him he was armed. The entire encounter lasted barely more than a minute. Authorities later found Castile had a permit to carry. Yanez, who is Latino, is charged with second-degree manslaughter, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He’s also charged with two lesser counts of endangering safety by firing his gun near Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her daughter. PROVING THE CASE The statute Yanez is charged under requires prosecutors to show he acted with culpable negligence — that he was reckless and acted unreasonably for the situation. His attorneys have argued Yanez reacted to the presence of a gun and had to use deadly force to protect himself. Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Ohio’s Bowling Green State University who tracks fatal police shootings, said convictions of officers are infrequent. Since the beginning of 2005, 81 officers nationwide have been charged with murder or manslaughter. A little more than a third were convicted — 15 by jury and 14 by guilty plea, Stinson said. But 39 percent resulted in non-convictions. Stinson said several high-profile cases recently ended in mistrials or acquittals when an officer testified that they feared serious bodily injury or death and had “no choice.” Jurors acquitted White Tulsa, Oklahoma, police officer Betty Jo Shelby of manslaughter on May 17 after she testified that she fatally shot Terence Crutcher, an unarmed, Black 40-year-old, out of fear when he didn’t obey her commands. And the retrial of former University of Cincinnati officer Ray Tensing is underway after his first case ended with a hung jury last November. In his initial trial, Tensing, who is

White, testified he feared for his life when he shot Samuel DuBose, an unarmed, Black 43-year-old, as DuBose tried to drive away during a July 2015 traffic stop. “Jurors are very reluctant to second-guess the split-second life-or-death decisions of an on-duty police officer involved in a violent street encounter with a citizen,” Stinson said. Yanez is expected to testify in his defense. THE VIDEOS At least two videos are expected to be shown to jurors. The video recorded by Reynolds shows a bloody Castile slumped over and moaning in the moments after he was shot. Yanez stands at the window, gun still aimed at Castile. Yanez swears and shouts: “I told him not to reach for it!” Reynolds replies that Castile was reaching for his ID, as Yanez requested. Authorities also have audio and video from Yanez’s squad car that haven’t been made public. The criminal complaint says they show the traffic stop itself and an exchange of information before Castile tells Yanez: “Sir, I have to tell you that I do have a firearm on me.” Yanez replies, “OK, don’t
forward an expert to testify that the presence of THC showed Castile was intoxicated. Prosecutors say their expert will testify that such a conclusion can’t be drawn. Yanez’s attorneys wanted to show the jury Castile’s car and have the officer re-enact the shooting, but the judge rejected that. The judge also won’t allow the defense to introduce details about Castile’s alleged past marijuana use or his arrest and driving record, but if testimony addresses those issues, the defense can ask the judge to reconsider. PUBLIC OUTCRY Castile’s shooting was among a string of killings of Blacks by police around the country, and the livestreaming of its aftermath attracted even more attention. The public outcry included protests in Minnesota that shut down metro highways and surrounded the governor’s mansion. Castile’s family claimed he was profiled because of his race, and the shooting renewed concerns about how police officers interact with minorities. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton also injected his viewpoint, saying police likely wouldn’t have fired if Castile had been White.

Castile says he was not reaching for it, and Yanez screams “Don’t pull it out!” before he quickly pulls his own gun and fires seven shots at Castile. Castile moans and says, “I wasn’t reaching for it,” according to the complaint. OTHER EVIDENCE An autopsy found traces of marijuana in Castile’s system, and defense attorneys have indicated they will argue he was stoned, didn’t obey the officer’s commands and that his own actions contributed to his death. President Trump’s Cruel War on Children By Marian Wright Edelman President, Children’s Defense Fund Our nation’s budget should reflect our nation’s professed values, but President Trump’s 2018 Federal Budget, “A New Foundation for America’s Greatness,” radically does the opposite. This immoral budget declares war on America’s children, our most vulMarian Wright nerable group, and Edelman the foundation of our nation’s current and future economic, military and leadership security. It cruelly dismantles and shreds America’s safety net laboriously woven over the past half century to help and give hope to the 14.5 million children struggling today in a sea of poverty, hunger, sickness, mis-education, homelessness and disabilities. It slashes trillions of dollars from health care, nutrition and other critical programs that give poor babies and children a decent foundation in life to assure trillions of dollars in tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and powerful corporations who do not deserve massive doses of government support. The cruel Trump budget invests more in our military—already the most costly in the world—but denies vulnerable children and youths the income, health care, food, housing and education supports they need to become strong future soldiers to defend our country. Seventy-one percent of our 17-24 year olds are now ineligible for military service because of health and education deficits. President Trump invests in fighting those he sees as outside enemies through
weapons and walls and turns his back on the internal enemies that threaten the basic domestic needs of our people—health care, housing, education and jobs that pay living wages. The Congress and the people of the United States must reject President Trump’s 2018 Budget and the mean-spirited values it reflects. The President’s 2018 Budget: •Slashes $610 billion over ten years from Medicaid, which nearly 37 million children rely on for a healthy start in life and which pays for nearly half of all births and ensures coverage for 40 percent of our children with special health care needs. The budget also assumes passage of the more than $800 billion additional cuts in Medicaid included in the American Health Care Act for a total Medicaid massacre of more than $1.4 trillion over ten years. •Rips $5.7 billion from CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program), which covers nearly 9 million children in working families ineligible for Medicaid. •Snatches food out of the mouths and stomachs of hungry children by slicing $193 billion over ten years from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which some still call food stamps. SNAP feeds nearly 46 million people including nearly 20 million children. This cut is an unprecedented 25 percent reduction in a core safety net program that in 2014 lifted 4.7 million people, including 2.1 million children, out of poverty. •Chops $22 billion over ten years from TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program) including $6 billion that eliminates the TANF Contingency Fund which helps support some of our neediest families. Slashes programs to assist families with housing and end homelessness by $7.4 billion, a 15 percent cut for 2018 including $2.3 billion from Housing Choice Vouchers, which would leave more than
250,000 low income households without them; $1.8 billion—nearly 29 percent— from public housing already in desperate need of repair and expansion; and $133 million—5.6 percent—from homeless assistance grants. •Whacks $72 billion over ten years from the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI), which more than 8 million children and adults with the most severe disabilities depend on to keep going. Despite the President’s promise not to cut Social Security, his budget cuts $48 billion from Social Security Disability Insurance, which assists, among others, grandparents and other relatives raising children because their parents cannot care for them. •Slashes job training programs by $1.1 billion, or 40 percent, over ten years for youths, adults and dislocated workers. It denigrates the concept of public service jobs by eliminating the Corporation for National and Community Service, and with it AmeriCorps, Vista and Senior Corps. •Cuts federal education funding $9.2 billion in 2018 alone at a time when a majority of children in all racial and economic groups cannot read or compute at grade level. It slashes $143 billion over ten years from student loans by eliminating the loan program that encourages graduates to take public service jobs and restricts other programs that subsidize college education for first generation college students and others from low-income families. •Shears $54 billion in 2018 ($1.6 trillion over 10 years) in non-defense discretionary programs that include a broad range of health, early childhood, education, child welfare and juvenile justice programs as well as environmental protection, foreign assistance, medical and scientific research and other federal government programs. The Trump budget would reduce spending for these important programs 2
percent a year for the next ten years. •Zeroes out funding for the Legal Services Corporation to deny the poor their only option to defend themselves against injustice. •Eliminates core programs that offer extra assistance to low-income children, families and communities including the Social Service Block Grant ($1.4 billion in 2018 alone, $16.3 billion over 10 years); the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to ward off heat in the summer and cold in winter months ($3.4 billion); the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME, and Community Development Block Grant, Indian Community Development Block Grant, and Choice Neighborhood programs ($4.1 billion). At the same time, President Trump’s 2018 Budget includes an estimated $5 trillion tax package for the wealthiest individuals and corporations who neither need nor deserve massive government support and dramatically increases spending on defense and border security. This draconian budget slashes over $3 trillion in the next decade and tramples America’s values and is anti-child, anti-poor, and anti-low-income working people. It erodes the security of our nation’s future. The Trump budget would not pass the test of any great faith or standard of fairness. It must be rejected resoundingly by the Congress and the American people. EDUCATION
‘Superhero’ Dion Steele Creates Limitless Possibilities at Urban Prep-Englewood By Katelyn Silva Education Post Dion Steele, principal of Urban Prep Academies’ Englewood campus, says he has “500 sons, and three daughters at home.” Urban Prep is the nation’s first charter network dedicated to serving young African American men. For the last eight years in a row, Urban Prep has sent 100 percent of its graduates to college. Being the head of his 500-student family demands superpowers, and Steele has made it a habit to study those powers. He says he has an “obsession with comics and superheroes” and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. Steele sees parallels between his love of Marvel comics and his study of theology; in fact, he questions whether he would have pursued the latter without the former. Steele not only believes strongly in the value of mythological storytelling to inspire youth to imagine wider possibilities for themselves, but his obsession also plays a larger-than-life role in the hallways of the Urban Prep-Englewood Campus. Meanwhile, at home, Steele’s daughters are shining, too. His oldest just graduated from college and is following in her father’s footsteps as a 4th-grade teacher in Virginia. She hopes someday to open her own charter school. His middle daughter now attends Virginia State. This fall, his youngest will start at Howard University. “I’m proud of all three of my daughters, as well as my 500 sons at Urban Prep,” he says. You have a lot of superhero posters, action figures, and lightsabers in your office. A lot of them have been given to you by parents, students, and the community over the years. Why do you identify with superheroes and mythological storytelling? Our young men don’t have a lot of superheroes in their lives. I was a big fan of Marvel comics growing up and I loved Darth Vader in Star Wars. I heard James Earl Jones’ voice and I thought it was a Black guy in a suit. I identified. I thought, ‘Wow, he can do everything. He’s all-powerful.’ It gave me something to look up to. I don’t think I would have been interested in religion and philosophy and pursued that in my studies had I not been interested in comics as a kid. I think when the fantasy world is removed from the lives of young Black boys (as it often is), it removes the idea of limitless possibilities. That’s why I keep it around me and my students. You talk about the importance of believing in limitless possibilities. The Urban Prep motto is “We believe.” What does that mean to you? Those of us who came up with the Urban Prep creed, which relates to the motto, were a body of men who reflected the population we were going to serve. We

If you read the creed, it says things like, “We never fail because we never give up. We are our brothers’ keeper.” It is meant to become a part of you, to become an internalized way of life. The Urban Prep motto means: I can do anything that I want to; I have the power to make it happen. Urban Prep has been successful getting students to college at incredibly high rates. Why do you think that is? What’s the recipe for success? I look at this from a personal perspective. I went on sabbatical from Urban Prep early on because I struggled with a shadow of doubt about what my students could achieve because of the challenges they faced at home or where they entered Urban Prep academically. Our young men are dealing with gangs and so many other issues. If you were naïve to that, your practices weren’t going to be properly built around the students and their needs, but at the same time, you have to overcome the idea that they can’t do it, because, of

course, they can. I came back to Urban Prep refreshed, rejuvenated, and confident that there is no other place as supporting and nurturing for young, Black males as Urban Prep. And now I know that everyone who works at Urban Prep has to come to the work like a parent or an uncle, with that level of belief and innate drive to see every young man succeed. These are my guys. I am going to do what I need to do to make them successful. I have three daughters, but I have 500 sons. Getting students to college is incredibly important, but seeing them to and through college to graduation is the ultimate goal. How is Urban Prep doing with that and how do you work towards that goal? Urban Prep’s college persistence rate is 74 percent, which outpaces African American males nationally. Why? A young man came by the office today to tell me he had a 4.0 GPA. I asked if he had met other guys from Urban Prep at his university. He had. Our guys are going to schools with builtin networks; they enter already part of a brotherhood. They have that built-in cul-
ture because we cluster Urban Prep students on college campuses. We also have alumni affairs staff who keep in close contact with our students. Social media makes it really easy for all our staff members to do that. It’s a privilege to be able to friend students on Facebook once they graduate and are adults. I keep close tabs on them. We are a family. What makes you most hopeful? What makes me hopeful is that, at Urban Prep, we expose our students to a lot. When I was in high school, the only careers I knew could be counted on one hand. My mother was a nurse. She wanted me to be a doctor. So, that is what I was going to do. But that was not right for me. It’s important that our young men are exposed to multiple pathways and that their interests are catered to, so they choose and are placed at the right colleges. I never want to set up our young men to fail. FOOD
The Signature Sweets Factory Takes Over the South Suburbs
Specialty cupcakes are a hit at SIgnature Sweets Factory. Chef Marcus J. makes every dessert he offers different.
Marcus Freeman also known as Chef Marcus J. By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer With various television programs highlighting the culinary arts, it has created a food phenomenon that has turned chefs into instant “rock stars.” However, those of us who have had the secret pleasure of watching our mom, grandmother, aunties or other gifted family members bake have known our families’ “chefs” to be true stars for a long time. As we eagerly await to finish off the remaining cake batter or cookie dough that lingers in the bowl as a “badge of honor,” we take in the aromas from home baked pastries. The smell would often resonate throughout the house carrying our childhood memories into our adulthood.
Many of those memories have lead Marcus Freeman, a rising young pastry chef, to open his own bake shop, Signature Sweets Factory. After the last three years of making and delivering his special baked goods and desserts to private clients and catering jobs—the 22-year-old opened his South Holland shop at 514 E. 162nd in early May. From the cookie crust based cupcakes to the tasty banana pudding in his signature jars, customers are greeted with a variety of on premise desserts and/or a “madeto-order” menu. Known as Chef Marcus J., he has designed some of the most beautifully sculptured wedding cakes along with personalized pastry bars for both celebrity and corporate clients. surrounded by delicious cupcakes and gold-plated apples from his new bake shop. How did you start in the baking business? Well, I’ve always liked to cook ever since I was three years old, but baking is something totally different. I really started baking around the time I started working my retail job at 16. At the time, I couldn’t really take food up to my co-workers but I would take them cupcakes, muffins, things like that. So, I started training myself by doing something nice for my co-workers. How did you begin to learn your way around the kitchen at an early age? My aunts taught me a lot. They took me under their wings and it was pretty basic things—like baking from a box mix and things like that, but then I eventually moved on and wanted to do things from scratch. Did you eventually go to school for culinary arts? No, I didn’t, I learned because I liked to eat. (he laughs) If something didn’t come out right, I would just try it again and try it again until I got the perfection that I wanted. What was the process that it took for you to find your location? Like many people who just start out with baking, culinary, anything—we were renting a kitchen for a long time. We stumbled upon the place we were at by accident—
it was not too far from my house, a perfect size. It was really bigger than what I even imagined my first place would be so I was very excited about that. You’ve built your brand by taking orders from people along the way, appearing at different events and building up that grassroots support. Why is it so important for entrepreneurs to really do this before they delve into a brick and mortar business? I always like to remind people that there’s a lot of people out here doing a lot of things. There are so many bakeries so you have to build awareness before you just get that brick and mortar business and present yourself to people. It’s always good to go in with some type of support system and fan base that knows your product, likes your product and is willing to tell people. I saw people coming into your shop who pre-ordered desserts. One of the items that really stood out for me was that banana pudding. Just like every single thing that I sell, I wanted to have the best banana pudding. I started thinking about how I could do that; the first thing that came to mind was instead of pre-bought wafers that have all of these artificial ingredients—I can make my own. Also, instead of using cool whip, I can make my own whip cream so I did that and included vanilla beans because I’m addicted to vanilla
beans—I use them in about everything. I also make the custard from scratch, along with using fresh bananas. We focus on high quality flavors as much as possible. I notice that your cupcakes have a unique presentation. It’s not just your typical icing, sprinkles and cake texture. I always tell people that when I first started cooking, my coworkers would say ‘It tastes great, but it doesn’t look all that great.’ So, I started focusing on how my product could taste even better if it looked the part. I make sure that my presentation is great. Each of my cupcakes has a butter cookie crust for a textural element and they’re also filled with white chocolate mousse. I combine soft cake, crunchy cookie, different textural elements as well as flavor. Moving forward, what would be some of the advice that you can share for entrepreneurs who are looking at opening up their business? People already have their neighborhood bakeries that give plain old chocolate chip cookies and cakes. So, I try to make every single item I offer different. Whether you’re an entrepreneur in the same field that I am or a restaurant [owner], I think it’s really important to distance yourself from the pack and tell people what you’re offering is something totally different and unique. Why is it so important to have key people who are in support of what you do and who are supporting your dream? If you want to do something great, you can’t do it alone, especially in the field I’m in. My mother helps me the most, she calls herself the ‘momanager.’ She does everything from tying boxes, to helping me design sweets tables to running the store. My father also helps run the store, he does much of the deliveries and the maintenance. I also have plenty of cousins and aunties who help me bake. Having family who can help you with the business is a great start. www.chicagodefender.com
FOOD
The Crazy Crab Chicago Is Growing Legs By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Chicago has had its share of great restaurants with a world-class reputation for some of the best food that has influenced American cruisine. Much of our American food history has come from the culinary skills of Black slaves and our Southern roots. What we’ve come to know today as Soul food, many chefs from various backgrounds have remixed the term from “Soul” to “Southern” comfort food. Our roots run even deeper as seafood has gathered much tastier options through simple methods of cooking. None could be closer to the popular seafood boil craze that has taken over more Northern cities. A new restaurant has opened its doors to welcome customers into the world of seafood bibs, paper table coverings and messy eating. The Crazy Crab Chicago is located at 9204 S. Western in the Evergreen Park community. The brainchild of Martin and Cindy King, the intimate sit-down restaurant is open seven days a week and boosts a diverse menu. Martin King is no stranger to the business world and has a long history, growing up on the Southside of Chicago. As a

As a successful attorney, he served as board chair of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and worked closely in developing several of the organization’s programs.
His vision to create a viable business on the South Side was another extension of building jobs and providing management training for African Americans. When you enter The Crazy Crab, its dining room is welcoming and provides a family-friendly environment with a warm wait staff. The menu offers an array of options aside from the various seasonings to accompany either the shrimp or crab leg boil bags. Each hearty serving includes corn on the cob and red-skin potato boils and marinated juices that will keep the paper
towels in full use. Other menu items range from chicken wings, chicken tenders to the tasty lobster roll sandwich, shrimp po’boy, calamari, fried shrimp, fried catfish—and other non-shellfish items. With an aggressive plan in place to eventually open a franchise of 30+ locations throughout the Midwest in the next few years—King is committed to open three new locations in the next four to six months. IN THE MIXX
In the MIXX: Black Folks Moving, Political Gatekeepers and Gentrification By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts and Entertainment Editor
We are moving outta here! Why are Black folks leaving in higher numbers than any other groups from the Chicago city limits? The rising taxes and affordable housing options are no longer affordable. We’re not talking about Mary L. Datcher only those that are in the low-income tax bracket, but also the working to middle class residents who are being forced out by increased property taxes and higher rents. The neighborhoods that are most affected are predominately Black communities where certain areas on the West Side and South Side are becoming a “land grab” for real estate developers. We’re seeing this currently with the Woodlawn and South Shore community since The Obama Presidential Library announced Jackson Park will be the “chosen” location. Have you noticed more non-Black residents walking their dogs or jogging casually along the streets of Bronzeville and Washington Park? We’re not knocking the diversity of our city but we are concerned about neighborhoods that have a long, rich cultural history of maintaining a hold on generational security and wealth—through property ownership. Gentrification may seem like a cozy blanket in the winter for some property owners who’ve invested in their inner-city parcels of land while they reside in the suburbs, but for thousands of residents who call Chicago their home— it’s depressing. Our Latino neighbors in Humboldt Park and Pilsen are experiencing the same concerns as they are gradually squeezed out by six-story condos sticking out like sore thumbs and reduced parking spaces—gobbled up by additional cars. So, we are not surprised by the U.S. Census report that Chicago lost close to 8,600 residents in the last year and will lose its third market status to the growing Houston, Texas. What does this mean for our Black voice that has rang so strong for the past 70 years as the leading city in cultivating Black business owners, community activists, educators, judicial and government leaders? Our presence in city, county and state government is steadily decreasing and jobs that were fought for by our Black lead-

ers, are no longer balanced or fair. We must do better for our people—across the board. What Had Happened Was… Two years and no balanced state budget has been passed. The Illinois House Senate pushed through a budget at last week’s meeting in Springfield but regardless of the House supporting the budget—Gov. Rauner will not sign off. Here we go again. Think about how many seniors with reduced homecare provision and struggling parents dealing with either long-awaited childcare credit approval or none at all. And think about the many social service programs that have been slashed or had to shut down altogether. As the gubernatorial race continues to heat up on the Democratic side, the leading candidates are J.B. Pritzker and Chris Kennedy. No diss to Alderman Ameya Pawar and State Senator Daniel Bliss, but this will be the most expensive governor’s race in Illinois history. Deep pockets are a must to keep up with the Rauner camp. Speaking of keeping up, word is Chris Kennedy turned down speaking with a group of “powerful” and “influential” Northshore working mothers because they weren’t his “core” audience. Wow…interesting. However, Pritzker did attend the group’s annual event where they boost 6,000+ members and impressed this influential and diverse group of professional moms. Meanwhile, some community activists are feeling a little slighted by the Pritzker camp “gate keepers.” What are gate keepers? They are unofficial “official” advisors that give the candidate the impression they hold the “key” to leading a particular group of people to the polls. No one else can go to the candidate without going through them
first. Campaigns have been lost because some gate keepers represent a small percentage of the community they claim they serve. Word to the wise— gate keepers don’t have much to lose but the person they guard does. Look for former Ceasefire Executive Director Tio Hardiman to throw his hat in the governor’s race for the second time. Some feel concerns for Chicago’s escalating violence is not a major priority for the current agenda. On the education front, we are hearing South Loop Elementary may be a possible victim of gentrification. As the South Loop community becomes more residential, parents are concerned about not having a CPS high school. The idea of sending their kids to nearby Dunbar Academy High School or Philips Academy High School is just too scary so a proposal of building a new $60 million high school to accommodate their concerns may shut down South Loop Elementary. The possibility of changes at the National Teachers Academy will also be affected if certain parents have their way. This past Memorial Day weekend was the launch of Chicago summer activities for families and outdoor fun. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) hosted a fun Chicago House Music party at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park on Saturday. The free event attracted over 20,000 attendees with a stellar line-up of Chicago House music DJs and singers. This year, the city included more DJs to the day’s line-up by opening the large outdoor tent, west of the pavilion lawn where close to 1,000 people danced to the music. Shout outs to the Queens of House—First Lady, DJ Alicia and Socket who had the tent on blast. Great vibrations and energy throughout the day. DJs Terry Hunter, Pierre, Steve ‘Mig-
gedy’ Maestro and Maurice Joshua had great sets trying to keep the crowd on their feet. People were looking forward to the Legendary House All-stars, which featured various singers but was plagued by sound problems with fading onstage monitors and mic issues. At times, you can tell certain vocalists were having a problem with the band keeping up or just couldn’t hear themselves. It’s unfortunate because the line-up included all great performers. Nonetheless, the good showmanship of awesome vocalists-- Faith Howard, Andrea Love, Lorenzo Owens and Jameisha Trice-- kept the party going. Loved the Latin flavors and percussionists who added diversity to the performances— hopefully next year we will see more of this and less sound and band difficulties. I salute the efforts by DJ Joe Smooth, Lady Maestro and host Dana Divine, who has done an extraordinary job the past two years. Birthday Shout-outs Happy belated birthday shout-outs to the ultimate househead Michelle Allen-Marsh on May 30. A Legend is Born: Tribute to Josephine Baker Black Ensemble Theater Presents Black Pearl: A TRIBUTE TO JOSEPHINE BAKER Written and Directed By: Daryl D. Brooks Now Playing May 6 – June 25, 2017 By Rick and Brenda McCain Defender Contributing Writers Becoming a legend has its benefits. But, in a world where people view you as less than human, being born is a challenge within itself and being a legend is inconceivable. But… legends are created from the thoughts of those who can overcome adversities and still believe that dreams can come true. In spite of unthinkable obstacles, she was born to be legendary. So, who was the little girl that grew up to become the pioneer known as Tumpie, Black Venus and The Black Pearl, which is the featured name used by The Black Ensemble Theater to depict this Creole goddess? Who was this iconic figure who lived with the hatred of racism and segregation within her own country, and despite being banned from performing in the United States, became a star by doing things her way? Her name was Freda Josephine McDonald, but she never liked the name Freda; so she was known as Josephine Baker, the first Black international superstar. Freda was born into a world of poverty to a washerwoman named Carrie McDonald and vaudeville drummer Eddie Carson on June 3, 1906 in St. Louis, Mo. Josephine wanted more than what life had to offer the Negro, so she left home at an early age to pursue her dreams of becoming a star. But before finding success on Broadway and becoming one of Europe’s most popular and highest-paid performers in the 1920’s, she learned to dance on the streets in St. Louis to make money so that she could eat and survive. Famous for barely-there dresses and no-holds-barred dance routines, her exotic beauty took Europe by storm and catapulted her career to becoming a legend around the world. Let’s Play is proud to introduce you to a play that we “highly recommend” called “Black Pearl: A Tribute to Josephine Baker.” This phenomenal performance allowed us to take a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary woman, whose professional career of dancing and singing entertained and thrilled the world for 50 years. Director Daryl D. Brooks eloquently answers the questions to “Who is Josephine Baker?” by taking us on an unforgettable voyage from St. Louis, to New York, to Paris with two impressive actresses portraying Younger Josephine (Aerial “Mon’ Aeerie” Williams) and the older, wiser Josephine (Joan Ruffin). Daryl ingeniously crafted the older Josephine Baker to chronicle her life story as a dancer, singer, wife, mother and www.chicagodefender.com
civil rights activist. He shared with us her compelling backstory with an in depth look at the entertainer who dreamed of dancing as a little girl and how her dreams were deferred as she sought to escape reality for better living conditions by marrying too young. We were given a delightful yet tragic view of the path of how Josephine tried to make it in a world that provided her with disappointments to how she became famous and finally earning the respect she well deserved across the seas in Paris, France. We get a chance to gaze back into history and see Josephine Baker’s infamous 16 piece banana skirt that launched her into the stratosphere of success to how she almost died working with the French Resistance during World War II and fighting for civil rights in the United States during the 1950’s and the 1960’s. Admirers bestowed a plethora of gifts, including diamonds and cars, and she received approximately 1,500 marriage proposals. She became an advocate of racial harmony by adopting 12 children, calling
Daryl D. Brooks them “The Rainbow Tribe!” She maintained energetic performances and a celebrity status until her death in 1975. Unfortunately, racism prevented her talents from being wholly accepted in the United States until 1973. Lastly we witnessed how this little girl born into a world full of segregation devoted the rest of her life with the idea that
people of all nationalities could live peacefully together. And the legend was born. Aerial Williams and Joan Ruffin as past and present Josephine Baker were astonishing and their duo singing performance will surely cause a tear to fall from your eyes. Notable understudy of the older Josephine Baker was the distinguished director, producer, actress, educator, singer, playwright, Founder & CEO of The Black Ensemble Theater, Jackie Taylor. Seeing any performance of her as Josephine Baker would be a treat. Again, we highly recommend “Black Pearl: A Tribute to Josephine Baker.” The cast includes: Joan Ruffin (Older Josephine) Aerial Williams (Younger Josephine) Rhonda Preston (Mother) The ensemble also includes: Dennis Dent, Lemond Hayes, Kelly Maryanski, Linnea Norwood, Rhonda Preston, William Rowland, Henri Slater, Kyle Smith, Jake Stempel, and Vincent Jordan.

HEALTH
The Black AIDS Institute Launches Month-Long Awareness Campaign By Black AIDS Institute Staffers The Black AIDS Institute, the nation’s only think tank focused on the impact of HIV upon Black communities, launched a national, digital-community campaign, “30 Days of HIV,” beginning May 27 and ending on National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) on June 27. The campaign consists of three core elements: an online community calendar to promote HIV and health-related events serving Black communities, an Instagram storytelling series titled “In The Life” featuring images of the life experiences of Black, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (GBTQ) and same-gender-loving (SGL) men, and daily actions to mobilize Black communities and those who serve them. “Even though it is not in the news to the extent it was a few years ago, HIV/AIDS is an ongoing, and among some sectors, tragically growing crisis in Black communities,” says Phill Wilson, the Institute’s President and CEO. “Black gay and bisexual men in the United States have a 50 percent lifetime HIV-infection rate. Black women still represent 61 percent of the new HIV infections among women. Our house is still on fire and we don’t seem to notice. 30 Days of HIV is designed to shine a spotlight not just on the problem, but more importantly on who we are and what we can do, if we focus on this problem.” The “30 Days of HIV” campaign will create awareness, fight stigma and create solutions to curb HIV among Black Americans, who bear the heaviest burden of the epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in 2015, Black Americans accounted for 45 percent of HIV diagnoses, though they comprise just 12 percent of the population. Young, Black gay men are at greatest risk and stand a 50 percent risk of acquiring HIV during their lifetime. The online community calendar will feature HIV and health-related activities in Black communities during the 30 days leading into NHTD. Organizations that have planned health fairs, HIV-testing or other outreach activities during this timeframe are invited to submit the events to pavniatwork@gmail.com for inclusion on the calendar. Also, to mark Men’s Health and Gay Pride, the Institute will highlight the contributions of Black GBTQ and same-gender-loving (SGL) men through the “In The Life” campaign. Each day, the Institute will publish on its Instagram feed photos and videos featuring the life experiences of Black GBTQ/SGL men, particularly visual narratives challenging stereotypes, portraying healthy lifestyle choices, and filling in the gaps in the visual imagery of the men’s lived experiences. “It is an opportunity for everyone to see all the facets of what it is to be a Black and male in America,” says Gerald Garth, the Institute’s
Manager of Prevention and Care. “While HIV care, prevention, and education are a major part of the Black gay experience, there is so much more. Many of us are artists, thinkers, fathers, husbands and have transitioned and evolved in many ways well beyond the scope of HIV.” Black GBTQ/SGL men ages 21 or older who live in the United States are invited to submit two photos or videos less than 60 seconds long, along with a 100-word description of the images, whether a story, poem, narrative or rhyme, similar to Instagram photographer Ruddy Roye or Humans of New York. Images should reflect the everyday life and contributions of Black GBTQ/SGL men to society—from work life, to parenting, to healthy lifestyle choices, to taking HIV-fighting medications, to experiencing #BlackBoyJoy. “Many of us will tell stories of how HIV has impacted our lives, but I’m so excited that we will see the full spectrum of what it is to be a Black man in America,” says Garth. Photos, videos, descriptions and the contributor’s Instagram handle should be submitted to pavniatwork@ gmail.com. Participants don’t have to be living with HIV, and those living with HIV/AIDS can decide whether they mention their HIV status. The Black AIDS Institute reserves the right to edit to make sure all language is appropriate for our audiences. Finally, during the “30 Days of HIV,” the Institute will publish daily actions via social media to mobilize Black communities to take care of their health and fight HIV/AIDS. “From #SoulfulSunday, to #WellnessWednesday, to #ThrowbackThursday, we will highlight those who have passed away; each weekday will provide a designated call to action that explores what it means to be a whole person and an advocate,” Garth says. “We’ll also encourage people to show what a relationship looks like—all types. The actions are a chance for us to stretch and redefine what it means to be an advocate.” All aspects of the campaign will be housed on BAI’s website, www.blackaids.org and promoted daily via multiple social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute (BAI) is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank in the United States focused exclusively on Black people. BAI’s Mission is to end the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing institutions, leaders, and individuals in efforts to confront HIV/AIDS. BAI disseminates information, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance and capacity building, interprets and influences public and private sector HIV/AIDS policies, delivers prevention and linkage to care services, and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view. Our motto is: “Our People, Our Problem, Our Solution.”

FOOD CONT. Crazy Crab, continued from, Page 11
We traveled to San Diego, California, and we saw several concepts that served seafood in the bag. We came back to Chicago, we saw some concepts (mostly on the North Side) that did it as well and we thought it just made sense to have this concept on the South Side. There aren’t many sit down restaurants on the South Side of Chicago, particularly not seafood. If you want a sit-down dinner, you’d have to go to Red Lob- Martin King brings great seafood and excelster, which is usually lent customer service to Evergreen Park. located somewhere between five or eight miles outside of the African-American community. In the last few years Chicago restaurants have adapted more ‘Down South’ influenced seafood boils. The variety of seasonings and preparation has been in the African-American community for a long time. I agree—I think that our culture is changing in terms of people wanting to eat a little healthier and seafood is a great option to eat healthier. In terms of the boil—the seafood in the bag concept—it was created in the South on the coast, in areas such as New Orleans, Mississippi, Alabama where you get shrimp and crawfish pretty regularly and pretty easily in the Gulf region. In the Midwest, seafood was kind of restricted because you have to fly everything in so I think that now that you have so many suppliers out there that serve or that supply fresh seafood, there’s opportunity now to bring it into the Midwest and bring it into the urban areas. The Crazy Crab Chicago is one of the few Black-owned and operated businesses in Evergreen Park. Do you make it a point to employ people of color? Sure—a majority of our staff is African American. We don’t discriminate but we do try to hire people with similar backgrounds. We try to give these young people an opportunity to see an owner of a restaurant be involved on a daily basis. My theory, ‘if you can’t see it, then you can’t have it’. I’m also a professor at Chicago State University and I teach business—Business Law as well as business plan writing and entrepreneurship. So, many of our young people have not seen entrepreneurship close up and I think it’s important that I engage them and show them that you’re not just the dishwasher or you’re not just the cook. You’re a professor at CSU teaching students the do’s and don’ts of business. Have you encountered speedbumps in the road running your business? You run into snags all the time--undisciplined employees along with commodity items having price increases along the way. Anytime you build a business from the ground up—this is not a franchise—you run into some challenges and you just have to find solutions to those challenges and work your way through them. We’ve had a lot of support from our community, especially from the Evergreen Park community. We’ve had the benefit of good fortune and a lot of God’s grace. What makes The Crazy Crab successful in providing great service? My wife Cindy is very involved, I have a good crew of kitchen staff and a great wait staff. I would say that customer service for our servers is second to none. There’s no cost to being nice, and being kind to a customer makes a difference, which makes them want to come back. What I teach my students in class: ‘I can’t handle mean but I can handle you not being the most intelligent person, and I can teach you anything if you’re willing to learn—if you’re willing to have a good or pleasant attitude.’
The restaurant offers a place to sit down and enjoy a meal on the South Side. www.chicagodefender.com
