JUNETENTH

FATHER’S DAY GUIDE

Why We Celebrate Juneteenth By Donna Reynolds Defender Guest Writer Every year on June 19, African Americans in many parts of the United States celebrate their heritage and freedom by remembering the sacrifices of those who came before. This celebration, known as Juneteenth, has its roots in Galveston, Texas, where, on June 19, 1865, the Union troops, led by Major General Gordon Granger, first landed. Up until this point, the people of Galveston had no knowledge of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had become law two and half years earlier on January 1, 1863. There was little Union presence in the area, and with no means of effective communication, it had been relatively easy to prevent this news from becoming public knowledge. Shortly after arriving in Galveston, the Major General issued General Order Number 3, a proclamation that formally notified the people of Texas that all slaves were free. This decree further stated that “the connection heretofore existing between them (former slaves and masters) becomes that between employer and free laborer.” For the newly freed slaves, this news of emancipation was met with a variety of reactions, ranging from astonishment to utter jubilation. For many of them, freedom meant leaving the plantations, even when they had no place to go. Some left to join family members in neighboring states, while others saw the North as a true representation of freedom. But freedom came at a cost, and many former slaves became disillusioned as they struggled

to find work and acceptance. Faced with the harsh reality of their newfound freedom, former slaves found solace in remembering that day in June, and began to celebrate as a way to honor family and the struggles that their ancestors had to endure. The name Juneteenth was adopted, and the day became a time to pray and draw strength from family members who had been part of this remarkable experience. These celebrations died off during the early 1900s, and it wasn’t until the beginning of the civil rights movement in the late 1950s that students engaged in the struggle for equality once again began to relate to the struggles of their ancestors. In 1968, the Reverend Ralph Abernathy called for a gathering of people from all races in Washington, D.C. Thousands arrived at the Poor People’s March and raised their voices in support of oppressed people. Many of these people were so inspired by the experience that on their return home, they began organizing Juneteenth celebrations in their communities. On January 1, 1980, due to the efforts of an African-American State legislator, Al Edwards, the state of Texas made Juneteenth an official state holiday. Since then, the celebration has been growing in interest, as direct descendants of former slaves return to Galveston year after year in honor of those who have come before them. Additionally, Juneteenth celebrations have spread throughout the United States, and the date is now celebrated in such diverse areas as Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Syracuse, New York, where the first Juneteenth celebration occurred in 1988.

Juneteenth Celebrations By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In the days preceding the celebration of Juneteenth, the Defender identified two family friendly options for parties interested in observing a moment in American history. Following the featured activities are a list of other festivities around the area. TheBlackMall.com TheBlackMall.com will host its 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Cultural Connection 360, 400 W. 71st, on Saturday, June 17 from 4-9 p.m. Cassiopeia Uhuru, founder and operator of TBM, said she’s expecting 500 guests in what she is calling a family friendly event. Uhuru said one of the event’s primary sponsors is the Chicago’s Women Empowerment Group along with multiple others. She said the legacy of Juneteenth should be appreciated and to this end she said she will begin her event with a traditional Yoruba libation to set the proper tone. “I think it’s important that people understand and learn what our people have gone through and learn their real, true history about emancipation for Black people in America,” said Uhuru. Uhuru said the day’s festivities will include a town hall meeting where discussions over the

different cultural aspects of the day will take place as well as capoeira classes, musical performances, African dance workshops, small business vendors selling products, and more. Also, the weekend will include a partnership with Real Men Cook who will provide a preview of their annual Real Men Cook Father’s Day celebration. Uhuru said she is humbled that TBM has received so much support throughout the city. The importance of Chicago in terms of the history of the United States for African Americans makes hosting Juneteenth events all the more important, according to Uhuru. “Chicago is an extremely vital component to Black progress, period,” said Uhuru. “People look toward Chicago when it comes to empowerment on so many fronts culturally, spirituality; we have so many different institutions that are living inside of Chicago that are powerful.” Cultural Collision Open Mic Expo The National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum is hosting its third annual Juneteenth at the museum, 10406 S. Maryland Ave., from 11 a.m. -5 p.m. celebration with a twist. Journey to the ‘Lost and Found’ – Visual Views of the African Diaspora At Art Gallery and Film Festival By Stan West Defender Contributing Writer Scented burning candles and floor mirrors along with delectable Haitian food, conga music and a talented Vodun-inspired dancer greet visitors at the Pilsen art gallery opening. Called “Diaspora/Dyaspora: Haiti to Chicago and Back Again (A Migration Story),” the exhibit at Rootwork Gallery, 645 W. 18th St., opened Friday and remains until July 23. It features the spirit-soaked work by painter Alexandra Antoine, 27, a young Chicago-based teaching-artist with roots in Leogane, Haiti, who said “the soulful spirits of the Haitian and African ancestors comes through me in my art.” A virtual Who’s Who in the Haitian-American community was there to meet her: Haitian American Museum of Chicago co-founder Elsie Hernandez; Jean Yves Hector, 22, her-painter-nephew from Haiti; Fritz Villevoix, a famous painter living here in Chicago; Leslie Oliver, who has Haitian and Nigerian ancestry and studied the beauty of Haitian Vodun. They all could not stop smiling as they viewed their culture displayed on the walls and in the air. Even to the non-initiated, it was clear the saints were in the house. Rootwork Gallery owner Tracie D. Hall explained, “We placed the candles on the floor so if negative energy entered the room, it could burn there, and the mirrors simply reflect the real you. And we featured brilliant dancer Sadira Muhammad, who studied Katherine Dunham’s Haitian movement, to bring more authenticity to the place.” Rootwork Gallery’s website features Muhammad’s video as well as one by this reporter that explained Vodun (voodoo) is simply West African religion brought to the Western Hemisphere, and not like the Hollywood stereotype. The African Diaspora International Film Festival opened the same night and same time at Facets Cinematique, 1517 W. Fullerton, with “The Valley of Black Descendants” about Blacks in northern Chile that are not counted in the census or included in any official records of ever existing. The next film that also included discussion of internalized hate and internalized racism in a colonial context was “The Afro Mexicans in Southern California,” co-directed by Lizz Mullis, followed by a 7:30 p.m. reception and 8:30 p.m. screening of “Everything But a Man,” a commercial romantic comedy directed by Nnegest Likke, who is both Ethiopian and Black American. Lively conversation followed the screening of this funny film and Senegalese food was served at its reception. Meanwhile, Mullis, a graduate of University of Southern California Film Program, who is White, told me that “While our film was received positively by both Latino and Black audiences, Black viewers were much more welcoming and accepting. Mexicans were slower to openness. That said, while www.chicagodefender.com

Alexandra Antoine and Elsie Hernandez. a couple of our subjects who exhibited self-hate in the beginning of our production, they smiled with self-affirmation by the production end because they were no longer lost. They had been found.” On Saturday, the film festival opened with “Gurumbe: Afro-Andalusian Memories” about the African presence in Spain and musical bio-pic “Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band,” directed by Carol Bash, about the dark-skinned, Black feminist composer whose innovations were often ignored by a patriarchal color-struck music industry. The Festival also screened “Paris Noir,” a wonderful documentary on Black American expatriates, and “Adopted ID” about a Haitian adoptee named Judith Craig, who lives in London and Toronto, but returned to Cap Haitien in Northern Haiti to try to find her biological parents after being raised by a kind White Canadian couple. “There’s a lot of pain in trans-racial adoption,” she said. “This film helps us learn why we need to

care about adoptees more.” Global Blacks Both weekend events spoke directly to and about global Blacks. This was most evident at the “Adopted ID” screening, where several Haitian-American notables, including the consul-general as well as the leaders of the Dusable Heritage Foundation, were present. There was a question and answer session with painter Alexandra Antoine and Judith Craig, the subject of “Adopted ID.” Prior to the screening, with South African food and wine flowing and the same spirits present at the film festival that were swirling at her exhibit, Antoine told the Defender, “Whether we were born here in the United States or not, as Black people who are part of diaspora as well as The Great Migration, we need to learn how we traveled from place to place, and why.” It was the 25th anniversary of the Diaspora International Film Fest, the 15th in Chicago. It began in New York, then spread to Chicago, Washington, D.C., Curacao,

Paris, and other cities, according to Festival co-founder Dr. Reinaldo Barroso-Spech, a Cuban of Jamaican and Haitian ancestry and a former Columbia University Teachers College instructor who holds a doctorate in anthropology and education. “One of the goals, aside from bringing diversity into this experience, was to create a teaching structure within the Festival to expose the largest number of students possible to the films and to show educators how to use the films in the classroom as a teaching tool,” he said. On Wednesday, June 14, the Festival features “Egypt Past and Present Program” with “Nasser’s Republic: The Making of Modern Egypt” at 7:30 p.m. and “Sins of the Flesh” at 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, June 15, it features “Mama Africa-Miriam Makeba” with a reception sponsored by the South African Consulate in commemoration with Youth Day – the annual South African celebration of the June 16 Soweto Uprising. It closes with “Hogtown,” directed by Daniel Nearing, which is set in 1919 Chicago against the backdrop of the race riots of that year, the Spechs said. In some regards, the Spechs -- a husband and wife team -- are the embodiment of this diasporic theme. Diarah, who is French and Malian, is fluent and literate in two languages. She has a B.A. in economics from SUNY, Albany and an M.B.A. from Columbia University in Management and Marketing. She and Reinaldo select all of the films in the festival and co-develop the publicity and marketing of these films, as well as co-host the festival screening. So I asked her: “How are Black American expatriate artists navigating the tough terrain of on one hand being ‘American first, Black second’ in a hyper-militarized fortress France that increasingly discriminates against its own Caribbean and African Blacks, while African Americans are slow to embrace their brothers and sisters?” Diarah said: “I am both French and Malian. While I celebrate my French birthplace and my Malian ancestry, I recognize that some within the French government may not feel the same way towards me and others like me as we feel ourselves. Black American ex pats visiting France, who might get some temporary relief from America’s racial noose around their necks, might be somewhat reluctant to publicly show support for their Black French counterparts for a variety of complex reasons.” “Paris Noir” associate producer Julia Browne agreed and added, “Luckily, the Black Lives Matter Movement in France has bridged the gap between Black Americans and Black French people. Finally, we’re all on the same page. That’s a hopeful sign.” Videos and photographs from the film festival and gallery can be seen at: https://www.facebook.com/NYADIFF/?fref=nf&pnref=story https://www.facebook.com/rootworkgallery/

Chicago Bulls Prep Continues Streak of 100 Percent College Admittance By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Similar to its namesake, Chicago Bulls College Prep has all-star caliber performers—but these stars show up in the classroom instead of on the basketball court. Since 2013, the school has had 100 percent college acceptance for its senior class. And, the Class of 2017 continues the streak. Chicago Bulls College Prep, 2040 W. Adams St., honors its seniors who have received college acceptance letters by giving each student a special distinction - a red polo shirt. Kasie McElroy, Assistant Principal for 11th and 12th grade students at Chicago Bulls College Prep, said the purpose of the red polos is to instill a level of pride in the students for their academic growth. “Admissions and college readiness, we generally try to make everything focused around that mission and that’s why students are here, that’s what students are invested in, and so that’s why we try to tie those two,” said McElroy. McElroy said the Class of 2017 made school history by being the first to receive an acceptance into the QuestBridge Scholars Network, a platform used to connect the brightest students from low-income backgrounds with prestigious learning institutions, among other outstanding programs. Seniors aren’t forgotten once they wear their caps and gowns. Chicago Bulls College Prep hosts a collegial seminar class that helps support seniors with college

The 2017 senior class at Chicago Bulls College Prep continues the streak for 100 percent college admission since 2013. To honor their efforts, each senior was given a red polo shirt. applications, apply for financial aid and more, according to McElroy. Additionally, the school has two full-time alumni coordinators whose assignment is to stay in contact with students throughout their academic careers. Not all of the students who attend Chicago Bulls Prep live within the neighborhood, in fact, several travel great distances to be a part of the school’s unique culture and learning experience. At least two such students have flourished during their time at Chicago Bulls Prep while living outside the neighborhood. Chicago Bulls Prep Senior Aloni Harris woke up at 5 a.m. every morning to commute from her home in the Roseland neighborhood. She explained Chicago Bulls Prep has prepared her to attend the college of her choice - Yale University. Yale was selected from Harris’ top three choices, which included Georgetown University and Duke University. She said one of her teachers who attended Yale gave her an

inside peek into the Ivy League school’s culture and network. She said she intends on majoring in Political Science and African American Studies. “I feel like a student who attends this school [Chicago Bulls Prep] will feel more comfortable admitting when they don’t understand something or not feel afraid to stand out and be different from everybody else, and I feel like that’s an important thing when you go out to the world and not just in school but as you go further,” said Harris. “No fear, no embarrassment, make each other better,” is one of the school’s mantras, according to Harris. Harris’ younger teenage sister is enrolled in another Noble Charter school, but her big sister is already recruiting her to attend Chicago Bulls Prep. “If she came to Chicago Bulls Prep, I think that would be better because that’s my school and I love them here,” said Harris.

Chicago Bulls Prep Senior Keiyon Walton became a “Renaissance Man” while attending the school. He said he honed his self-taught piano skills, learned how to play cello, played football, basketball, track & field, and was a school ambassador during his tenure. “One thing I hold to heart is the character I built here,” said Walton, who stated in years past he wasn’t the leader he is today. The North Lawndale native will be attending Wheaton College in the fall where he plans to major in a physical therapy field with minors in music theory and performance. He said his football coach and school staff helped him make his decision. He said he will continue his football career as well. His parting words to his classmates were to continue to work hard throughout their scholastic journey because it will be worth the effort in the end. He said his younger sister, who is a rising junior at Chicago Bulls Prep, will be one of the reasons he stays connected to the school.

Chicago State’s Athletic Department Gears Up For New Heights By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Chicago State University has made headlines for a number of issues (rightfully so), however, under the stewardship of its interim athletic director Tracy Dildy, the Cougars’ outlook on the courts, fields, and track has never been better. Yet, despite positive gains, uncertainty in Springfield has made life hard on Chicago State. Dildy explained his athletic programs experienced difficulties on the recruiting trail this past year due in large part to the perception of the school during the state’s budget impasse. He said, as of now, they’re poised to move forward “You have to remind [recruits] that we’re not going to close, we’re here to stay, we’re celebrating our 150th anniversary of being in existence and we’re going to be around for another 150 years,” said Dildy. “Coaches have done a phenomenal job going out this spring and recruiting and bringing in student athletes who could really help us win the Western Athletic Con-

ference (WAC) while also not taking away from having a high graduation rate.” This spring, 21 Chicago State student-athletes will graduate and another six are slated to graduate at the end of the summer term. Winning the conference and competing in post-season play across all sports is a priority at Chicago State. Dildy projected in one or two years, the entire athletic department will have an opportunity to be highly competitive. He identified the men’s basketball team, volleyball, baseball, and the women and men’s golf teams as a few of the programs squarely on the rise. He said he knows that winning will go a long way towards bringing in more alumni, donors, and fans. “Everybody wants to be associated with a winner, and the more we turn that corner and start winning, the more you’re going to see the alumni and the supporters come on out,” said Dildy. “That’s on us. In sports, it’s about winning and making them feel proud to be connected to their alma mater.”

06 June 14 - 20, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Chicago State is still finding its legs after transitioning from the Great West Conference to the WAC in 2013. However, Dildy said the experience has been great for Chicago State. Specifically, he highlighted his teams’ trips to various cities within the conference like Seattle or exotic locales like the Bahamas as eye-opening experiences for his student-athletes. “[Student athletes] can see themselves in other parts of the country, and so I think from an experience standpoint, I don’t think there’s anything better,” said Dildy. Dildy, who in addition to serving as interim athletic director, is the men’s basketball head coach. He said Chicago State is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the wealth of blue chip basketball talent the city has to offer. He acknowledged that while it would be a plus for local hoopers to stay home and play for Chicago State that in reality many want to depart from the city to play. He shared that his pitch to basketball recruits is the promise of immediate playing time, Chicago State’s dedication to its student-athletes, and more.

Chicago’s male prep basketball talent is held with high regard around the nation. According to ESPN’s recruiting database, since 2007, over 40 high school players from the greater Chicagoland area have been nationally ranked including notable names like Derrick Rose, Anthony Davis, Jahlil Okafor, and Cliff Alexander, among others. “The [recruiting] competition is fierce, it really is; but once we get people on our campus, it sells itself. It’s always been about presenting our university to them,” said Dildy. Dildy said he doesn’t dwell on the interim label and instead has focused on fighting for more funding, media exposure, fan attendance, and graduating seniors. “We don’t know what God has planned; I’ve enjoyed this role and I’ve been able to do well in this role because I have such a great administration, staff, and coaches. I actually stay out of their way and let them do what they need to do,” said Dildy. “Things are really looking up; we’re moving in all the right directions.” www.chicagodefender.com

Richard Williams will be the first person inducted into the American Tennis Association’s Hall of Fame for his success as a coach to his daughters, Venus and Serena (pictured).

Father of Venus & Serena Williams Gets Inducted Into ATA Hall of Fame Defender Staff The American Tennis Association’s Centennial Celebration marks both the organization’s 100 years of dedication to the African-American tennis community and its title as the oldest African-American Sports Association in the country. Born from the joint tenacity of over a dozen African-American tennis clubs in response to the barring of African Americans from becoming members of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association, the ATA has successfully serviced thousands of youth and adults who desire to pursue their passion in tennis in light of discrimination and segregation. ATA President Willie Emerson couldn’t be any happier with ATA’s progress. “The ATA has had a rich and colorful history, and we will be honoring our past while focusing on the strategic plans for the next 100 years for Black Tennis in America,” he includes in his President’s message on the ATA’s home site. “This is an exciting year and we have many exciting events planned.” The association plans to continue their work from what will be the ATA Tennis and Education Complex in South Florida. Once built, the complex will consist of offices, a museum, a national training center for youth, and new Hall of Fame. The first of their inductees to the Hall of Fame is Richard Williams, father and coach of the legendary tennis sisters– Venus and Serena Williams. Williams will be recognized for his success as a coach to his Compton-born daughters, who have received numerous accolades for their successes in the Summer Olympics and Grand Slam tournaments. For about 20 years, the sisters have steadily been credited as top-of-the-line tennis players, with Serena leading as number one. When paired together in double tournaments, the two are practically undefeatable and have won 22 out of 23 titles. Thanks to Richard Williams’ mix of coaching and fatherly advice, the sisters have won over the world with their skills, drive, and dedication to tennis. Williams will be recognized during the ATA’s Centennial Celebration in a tribute presented at the 2017 Honors Gala on August 2. “This year, we recognize ATA’s value as a historic organization, and there’s no better way of doing that than to honor a man whose legacy is built upon the propitious parenting and coaching of his two daughters, both of whom have blossomed into top-tier doyens. These successful women have traveled beyond the stars thanks to their instilled determination and training while breaking plenty of barriers along the way. It is for the significance of Richard Williams in Venus and Serena’s athletic prowess and intellectual know-how that we would like to honor him as our first Hall of Famer,” says ATA Education Foundation President and former President of the ATA Dr. Franklyn Scott. 50 Years After Loving, 1 in 6 New Couples Are Racially Mixed By Jesse J. Holland Associated Press Fifty years after Mildred and Richard Loving’s landmark legal challenge shattered the laws against interracial marriage in the U.S., some couples of different races still talk of facing discrimination, disapproval and sometimes outright hostility from their fellow Americans. Although the racist laws against mixed marriages are gone, several interracial couples said in interviews they still get nasty looks, insults and sometimes even violence when people find out about their relationships. “I have not yet counseled an interracial wedding where someone didn’t have a problem on the bride’s or the groom’s side,” said the Rev. Kimberly D. Lucas of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. She often counsels engaged interracial couples through the prism of her own 20year marriage — Lucas is Black and her husband, Mark Retherford, is White. “I think for a lot of people it’s OK if it’s ‘out there’ and it’s other people, but when it comes home and it’s something that forces them to confront their own internal

Interracial marriages became legal nationwide on June 12, 1967, after the Supreme Court threw out a Virginia law that sent police into the Lovings’ bedroom to arrest them just for being who they were: a married Black woman and White man. The Lovings were locked up and given a year in a Virginia prison, with the sentence suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia. Their sentence is memorialized on

a marker to go up on Monday in Richmond, Virginia, in their honor. The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision struck down the Virginia law and similar statutes in roughly one-third of the states. Some of those laws went beyond Black and White, prohibiting marriages between Whites and Native Americans, Filipinos, Indians, Asians and in some states “all non-Whites.” The Lovings, a working-class couple from a deeply rural community, weren’t trying to change the world and were media-shy, said one of their lawyers, Philip Hirschkop, now 81 and living in Lorton, Virginia. They simply wanted to be married and raise their children in Virginia. But when police raided their Central Point home in 1958 and found a pregnant Mildred in bed with her husband and a District of Columbia marriage certificate on the wall, they arrested them, leading the Lovings to plead guilty to cohabitating as man and wife in Virginia. “Neither of them wanted to be involved in the lawsuit, or litigation or taking on a cause. They wanted to raise their children near their family where they were raised themselves,” Hirschkop said. But they knew what was at stake in their case. “It’s the principle. It’s the law. I don’t think it’s right,” Mildred Loving said in archival video footage shown in an HBO documentary. “And if we do win, we will be helping a lot of people.” Richard Loving died in 1975, Mildred Loving in 2008. Since the Loving decision, Americans have increasingly dated and married across racial and ethnic lines. Currently, 11 million people — or 1 out of 10 married people — in the United States have a spouse of a different race or ethnicity, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. In 2015, 17 percent of newlyweds — or at least 1 in 6 of newly married people — were intermarried, which means they had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity. When the Supreme Court decided the Lovings’ case, only 3 percent of newlyweds were intermarried. But interracial couples can still face hostility from strangers and sometimes vi-

olence. In the 1980s, Michele Farrell, who is White, was dating an African American man and they decided to look around Port Huron, Michigan, for an apartment together. “I had the woman who was showing the apartment tell us, ‘I don’t rent to coloreds. I definitely don’t rent to mixed couples,’” Farrell said. In March, a White man fatally stabbed a 66-year-old Black man in New York City, telling the Daily News that he’d intended it as “a practice run” in a mission to deter interracial relationships. In August 2016 in Olympia, Washington, Daniel Rowe, who is White, walked up to an interracial couple without speaking, stabbed the 47-year-old Black man in the abdomen and knifed his 35-year-old White girlfriend. Rowe’s victims survived and he was arrested. And even after the Loving decision, some states tried their best to keep interracial couples from marrying. In 1974, Joseph and Martha Rossignol got married at night in Natchez, Mississippi, on a Mississippi River bluff after local officials tried to stop them. But they found a willing priest and went ahead anyway. “We were rejected everyplace we went, because no one wanted to sell us a marriage license,” said Martha Rossignol, who has written a book about her experiences then and since as part of a biracial couple. She’s Black, he’s White. “We just ran into a lot of racism, a lot of issues, a lot of problems. You’d go into a restaurant, people wouldn’t want to serve you. When you’re walking down the street together, it was like you’ve got a contagious disease.” But their love survived, Rossignol said, and they returned to Natchez to renew their vows 40 years later. Interracial couples can now be seen in books, television shows, movies and commercials. Former President Barack Obama is the product of a mixed marriage, with a White American mother and an African father. Public acceptance is growing, said Kara and William Bundy, who have been married since 1994 and live in Bethesda, Maryland. “To America’s credit, from the time that we first got married to now, I’ve seen much less head-turns when we walk by, even in rural settings,” said William, who is Black. “We do go out for hikes every once in a while, and we don’t see that as much any longer. It really is dependent on where you are in the country and also the locale.” Even in the South, interracial couples are common enough that oftentimes no one notices them, even in a state like Virginia, Hirschkop said. “I was sitting in a restaurant and there was a mixed couple sitting at the next table and they were kissing and they were holding hands,” he said. “They’d have gotten hung for something like that 50 years ago and no one cared - just two people could pursue their lives. That’s the best part of it, those quiet moments.” www.chicagodefender.com

Pies Are In Her DNA Daughter’s Business Inspired By Dad by Nancy A. Simon Defender Contributing Writer At Justice of the Pies, Maya-Camille Broussard showcases not only homebaked pie goods made to honor her later. father, Stephen J. Broussard, a highly respected Chicago criminal defense attorney, but also the invaluable, life-long lessons he instilled in her to be independent and face one’s fears. On a recent Thursday afternoon at Daley Plaza farmer’s market, Broussard along with her associate casually greeted and bantered—in a friendly, Southern-style way—with both lunchtime professionals and city visitors as they came upon the booth. “Which do you recommend—the Key Lime or the Sweet Potato?” off-handedly questioned a working woman of Broussard. “Oh, if you’ve never had it, I would try the Sweet Potato pie…it has a really good combination of flavors without being overly sweet,” Broussard responded without hesitation of her specialty product and usage of such all-natural, traditional ingredients as: sweet potatoes, brown sugar, butter, eggs, evaporated milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla Sold. The woman buys her pie and smiles broadly as she leaves the booth and heads out of the market. To the outsider, baking may appear strictly about the ingredients. But, as Broussard relayed, baking as opposed to cooking, presents special challenges. “While cooking can be improvisational, baking needs to be exact; it requires such a precision. It takes a lot of practice to know when you get it right,” she said. As it turns out, many of the qualities that make Broussard a good businesswoman and baker--decisiveness, precision and timing--are life skills Broussard learned from both her father and his side of the family whose origins can be traced to Louisiana. Not necessarily true of all southern families, but often is the case, his family was full of prolific chefs who Broussard said taught her an appreciation and patience for cooking and baking. Though Southern in ancestry, Broussard’s father grew up on the West Side of Chicago in the Robert Brooks public housing complex near Roosevelt Road and Loomis Street. During his childhood, he frequently experienced poverty and hunger. Yet, despite lacking food, he still managed to get a good education. He was told, “Even if we can’t provide for you, we are going to make sure you get a good education so you can provide for yourself.” Of her own upbringing, Broussard recounted stories of her father who, as a Master scuba instructor, pushed her into the deep end of the pool when she refused www.chicagodefender.com

to swim beyond the shallow end, and, as a regular dad, took the training wheels off of her bicycle when he decided she was ready. When asked whether her father provided her with any pie recipes, Broussard said no. “Had he written them out, he may have, but he really wanted me to come into my own. He would be more proud of me for using my own creativity and exercising that muscle,” commented Broussard of her inner strength-building relationship with her father. “He wanted me to let go of fear and believe that I was capable.” Calling it a disability, Broussard explained she was born with a hearing impairment (she has 30 percent auditory capacity). Of her childhood and her parent’s differing parenting styles, Broussard stated, “My mom was the helicopter parent, always wanting to protect me, while my dad was always trying to toughen me up.” Among numerous pursuits, Stephen J. Broussard was a widely respected criminal defense attorney in the City of Chicago who, for over thirty years, maintained his own law practice representing cases of employment discrimination. Of the tremendous outpouring of comments after her father’s passing, Broussard said, “He understood his clients and felt they deserved another chance. He had empathy for people who looked like him.” But, the law was not Stephen J. Broussard’s only calling. A renaissance man of all sorts, in addition to being an attorney and certified as a Master scuba instructor, he was also trained as an actor in community theatre. And, he had a serious love affair with food. While growing up, her father ensured their home had a surplus of food rather than a deficit. As Broussard stated, “Once he had access and the means, he not only had a love of food but a desire to make sure food was always available.” Declared a “bon vivant” (person who enjoys a sociable and luxurious lifestyle) in his obituary, Broussard said her father was, “Larger than life. He had a big personality and definitely left an imprint on people’s lives.” Hence, much of her father’s influence has been carried over onto her Justice of the Pies business as she strives to honor his love of living large and enjoying good food. Motivated by challenges, Broussard said she considers baking to be in her family’s DNA (at least on her dad’s side) and very much in-line with her own personality and temperament. As someone who thrives on problem-solving, of discovering new ingredients, Broussard said, “It’s almost like a puzzle for me to figure out how I can interpret them into a pie.” Including the aforementioned Sweet Potato and Key Lime, she also offers sweet and savory pies in such flavors as: Blue

Plus, referring to the term “pie” as anything with a crust, under her Justice of the Pies banner, Broussard also make tarts and quiches. Truly in memory of her father, she said is the Apple Cranberry Pie and the Quiches, as he really appreciated a good quiche. As Father’s Day approaches, Broussard

said she celebrates her father every day— especially through her delectable pies. EDUCATION

Patrick Robinson Gives Young Men of Color a Reason to Believe By Katelyn Silva Education Post Patrick Robinson always knew that he would become an educator. The son of a Chicago Public Schools clerk, he stayed in the school building long after other students left, often helping teachers with bulletin boards and paper grading. However, it wasn’t until fourth grade that Robinson encountered his first Black male teacher. That experience was formative in shaping his view of what was possible for himself. Now the principal of Urban Prep Academy – West Campus, Robinson sees himself in his student body, mostly Black boys from underserved Chicago neighborhoods. More importantly, they see themselves in him. That matters, particularly to Robinson, who, having grown up on the South and West Sides of Chicago, feels an urgency to flip the narrative about what’s possible for young people of color in the city. With a college attendance rate of 100 percent in the last eight years, Urban Prep West’s young men are living up to Robinson’s dreams for them. Why Urban Prep? I knew I wanted to be a part of Urban Prep when I was in college and we did a study on the school. When I learned that there was a place specifically created for young Black and Brown boys to thrive in an urban environment,

I knew it was somewhere I could see myself. It became a lifelong goal. What do you think makes Urban Prep successful with young men of color? Our young men are dealing with so many external factors. It’s hard to leave that outside and concentrate on what is going on in front of you. Urban Prep has been really intentional about creating the culture and climate that allows our young men to have the supports necessary to focus on academics and be successful. Sometimes, other schools get so focused on test scores that they forget the lives of our students. An average student may have worked late last night, had to feed brothers and sisters in the morning, and get himself to school. They may be dealing with trauma and abuse or parents with substance problems. If a young man is acting out, there is often a specific, external reason why. We need to get to that reason. We need to have a conversation. What can we do to make sure the rest of the day goes well for that young man? Most of the time, our young men respond to that. They have relationships with us. When something is bothering them, they know where to turn. Then, they can get back to work. The Urban Prep motto is “We Believe.” What does that mean to you? The motto means a lot. As a

Patrick Robinson staff, we believe that our young men have bright futures before them. We believe that they are college bound. We believe they will change the narrative and be our next community leaders. We will pass the torch to them. I want one of my students to come back and be the principal. We believe if we put the work into our young men now, they will create a positive cycle, pulling up young men behind them. For our young men, it is about believing that Urban Prep will give them what they need to be successful. My first senior class is coming back to the building and telling me how much the Urban Prep creed means to them now that they are in college. They say, “We started and ended the day at Urban Prep with ‘We Be-

lieve.’ Now, when we are alone, during hard times, or when we get knocked down, these words come back to us.” I sit back and grin when I hear those things. What’s your driving motivation for doing this work? On the last day before Christmas break, we had a school assembly. We have an amazing drums team and one of our seniors is a dancer. He stood up and danced. We all clapped and videotaped him. We didn’t know it then, but it was the last time we would see him. He was shot a few days later during an altercation. It was a defining moment for me. When our young men walk out of the building, we never know if it’s the last time we will see them. He was an important person to me; a stu-

dent whom I was close to. I look at the work differently now. It’s urgent work. We must change the paths that the young men of our community are walking down. If we don’t, we will have more cases like that—cases of senseless violence. The work Urban Prep does is important work. Despite what critics may say, the environments we are creating for young Black and Brown men are something no one else is doing. We are changing lives. We are putting a new story out there. All you hear about Chicago is the violence. There is good happening in this city. My class of 2017, 100 percent of them are heading to college. Many of them are the first in their family. Many were told they would never make it this far. If it wasn’t for Urban Prep, many feel they wouldn’t be breathing today or would be incarcerated. Dealing with the loss of my student and hearing those things from our young men, makes me committed to coming into work every single day. ADVICE COLUMN

Are Men Really Dogs? Ask Dr. Karen! Dear Dr. Karen: My ex-husband and I divorced 10 years ago. Fortunately, now I have found peace in my life. While we were married, he was controlling, bossy and thrived on chaos and criticism of others. He remarried in 2015 and is in the process of divorcing again. Dr. Karen January He has been contacting me on a regular basis and says he wants me back in his life. My family is totally against us having a relationship. They all think he is arrogant and a bully. They say he’s a dog. I think I still love him, but I don’t really think that much of his character. He’s almost like a little puppy that just needs love and attention. What do you think? Stuck Dear Stuck: Who doesn’t love puppies? They are so cute. They also mess on the carpet and

chew on the furniture and sometimes they might bite you. You stated that you have finally found peace in your life and you don’t think much of his character. So, why would you even consider this reunion? If you take this “puppy” home again, you will remember why you don’t like dogs. *** Ladies and Gentlemen: Why do we continue to waste our time in relationships with people who do not love or respect us? When You Are Busted With Another Woman By Your Girlfriend, What Can You Do? Dear Dr. Karen: My girlfriend stopped by my house to visit and I told her I was going to bed early. She must have suspected something and came back and found a woman in my house. We have been cheating for about a year. The other woman didn’t know either. My girlfriend cursed me up and down and then left. On the way out, she keyed my car. Then, the other lady cursed me out and left. She could not believe that I would do this to her. I never went after the other woman. She

came after me. I backed off several times, but she kept coming so I gave in. She asked me several times if I was seeing someone, and I said I had a friend but nothing heavy. My girlfriend knew something was up. She kept telling me if I was interested in someone else to just tell her. But I didn’t want to lose her. This incident has made me realize that my girlfriend is the one I need in my life, but she may never speak to me again. My question is how do I get her back? Love Lost Dear Love Lost: You kept this a secret from two women for a year? You are scandalous. You have lied and cheated and you have the nerve now to come to your senses? You got caught and would still be cheating if your girlfriend hadn’t caught you. You blame the other woman even though you lied to her. That woman thought she had a boyfriend, when all you were doing was using her for sex. If you don’t suffer the consequences, you won’t learn not to do this again. You will learn you can’t cheat and get away with

it. Your ego and lust have probably cost you the love of your life. ***Why can’t we just be honest? If we want to date other people and don’t want an exclusive relationship, just say so! Dr. Karen R. King Liz Is Gripping and Captivating Where stilettos meet gym shoes on and off the court

By Brenda and Rick McCain Defender Contributing Writers When you think of successful sports agents, you think of the great Tom Condon, Arn Tellem and Scott Boras. These are the Jerry Maguire’s of the sports world. They are known as the good agents who have proven they are the kings when it Brenda and Rick McCain comes to getting it all for their players. However, a great agent gets the players even more. Before any athlete can think of making millions, they need to be sure their agent has the “I can do it” mentality or the athlete’s rags to riches dream can be over before it even starts. In the latest stage play at Windy City Playhouse, this cut-throat profession, which is typically an all-male dominated field, has been invaded by another king and this one is wearing stilettos. Director Chuck Smith has done it again with another powerful portrayal of how difficult life can be for those seeking to get it all at any cost. This well-written saga by Fernanda Coppel called “King Liz” is about an empowered woman emerging on the court and becoming a game changer in the sports agency field. This up-andcoming female sports agent can hold her own against any man in the business and has the tenacity to go toe-to-toe with her toughest male counterpart to get the NBA deal signed. There’s nothing more captivating and heroic than seeing a Black woman as the underdog beating the old boys network in their own game. “King Liz” delivers an exciting look at what actually happens in the world of an independent female sports agent who proves she can be a king in a field that only sees her as an assistant. “King Liz” does a remarkable job of taking us on a journey between Liz, the sports agent, and Freddy, the want-to-be famous basketball player. This strong woman with an in-your-face attitude also has the moral epiphany to take a risk to help this over-indulged rookie with an over-inflated ego succeed in his career. Continuously faced with extra challenges of being a woman coupled with the turmoil of trying to get this ill-tempered rookie to forge into a relationship of trust, she tries to use a woman’s touch but things change when she gets lost within her own goals of climbing up the ladder. Fame has www.chicagodefender.com

a price and she learns this when she has to make a decision that goes against her principles. With her desire to be famous, she learns how much that price can cost when she makes a pivotal decision to further her career. Sean Hampton wrote that “A dream without ambition is like a car with no gas… you’re not going anywhere.” King Liz reminds us that ambitiously seeking to become successful can get us all things we desire but at a cost of losing the things we need…happiness. “King Liz” introduces us to some very ambitious and passionate characters in the play by peeling back the layers in their lives. All of the characters do a marvelous job of convincing us that this is how the sports world operates between agent, player and team. Liz Rico, who is played by Lanise Shelley, is a very convincing and talented actress. She dominates this role and we predict she is a rising star. Her role as a powerful NBA sports agent in a high-profile, male-dominated position who is torn between fighting for her dreams and working endlessly to receive a promotion Lanise Shelly (center) plays a powerful NBA Sports agent with Eric Gerard (left), a baskeball player, and Phillip Edward Van Lear as Coach in “King Liz.” is compelling. Freddy Luna, played by Eric Gerard, is very persuasive as he brings a lot of realism to his pivotal hoopster character. what is being called a “Cultural Collision Open Mic Expo”. Open mic participants will be given the opportunity to perform poetry, spoken word, and music. David Peterson, Jr., president and executive director of the museum, said over the years the event has grown from a community recommitment ceremony where awards were given to the Tuskegee Airmen and the Buffalo Soldiers to what it is today. He said this year’s event is a “call to action.” “We’re going to make sure that we put out the right energy so we have a safe summer out here,” said Peterson. Peterson said this year’s event will also pay homage to the late Ronald “Kwesi” Harris who was an integral part of the program over recent years. Harris performed the libation ceremony and provided wisdom for event organizers. Peterson said Harris died on the day before the museum recognized Juneteenth last year. He called it an emotional time for everyone. “Kwesi helped put it together all around so this is basically an opportunity for us to keep his legacy alive by honoring him here,” said Peterson.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

United Negro College Fund Salutes Chicago Football Classic Founders at 2017 “A Mind Is...” Gala The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will salute the co-founders of the Chicago Football Classic – Larry Huggins and brothers Timothy J. Rand and Everett Rand – at the 2017 UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala. The event will be held Saturday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive. “The Chicago Football Classic is an institution in our community and, now, in its 20th year, we want to celebrate the co-founders, each of whom is accomplished in his own right, as our “A Mind Is…” Gala Community Award honorees,” said Lisa Rollins, UNCF regional director, Workplace Initiatives. Larry Huggins is president and CEO of Riteway-Huggins Construction Services. Timothy J. Rand is president and CEO of MAC One, a restaurant group. Everett Rand is owner of Midway Wholesalers, a liquor distributor. Together, they founded the weekend slate of cultural, educational and sporting activities that has become known as the Chicago Football Classic, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The mission of the Classic event is to inspire African Americans to consider academic and cultural opportunities offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The weekend includes scholarship opportunities, a college fair and empowerment summit in addition to the head-to-head competition between two HBCU football teams and the ever-popular Battle of the Bands. Each year the UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala brings together corporate, civic, nonprofit and community leaders and influencers to raise funds for deserving disad-

vantaged students to attend college. The program includes recognition of extraordinary individuals and organizations that support the work of UNCF. This year, Commonwealth Edison will receive the Corporate Award. Shayne Evans, founding managing partner, The Academy Group, and D’Rita Robinson, civic leader and entrepreneur, also will receive honors. Award-winning sculptor, painter, and multi-media artist Debra Hand will create the honorees’ awards. Internationally-renowned drummer, percussionist, singer, songwriter, author, humanitarian and actress Sheila E will provide the evening’s entertainment. Tom Ricketts, executive chairman of the World Champion Chicago Cubs, is gala chairman of the 2017 UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala. The Chicago Cubs organization is the Presenting Sponsor of the event. The “A Mind Is…” Gala gets its name from the decades-old UNCF slogan, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Gala donors and partners include BMO Harris Bank, ITW, US Bank, ComEd, Allstate, NBC5 Chicago, WinTrust, AT&T, InTren, GCM Grosvenor, Chase, Boeing, Chicago Defender, Nicor Gas, Northwestern Kellogg School of Business, JB Pritzker, American Airlines, Aldridge Electric, Mary Hines, Peoples Gas, iHeartMedia Chicago, Aramark, KPMG and Coaxum Family Restaurants. The Jeffery Leving Father’s Day Special Airs on WCIU Channel 26 By Jeffery M. Leving To turn the tide of father absence in America, this Friday, June 16, I will appear on WCIU The U Channel 26 (7:30am CT) to honor disenfranchised fathers everywhere, many of whom will be struggling this upcoming Father’s Day without their children. Father’s Day should be inclusive of all dads, and always be a lifelong memory for everyone. Jeffrey M. Leving This Sunday is set aside to celebrate Father’s Day, however, many dads in America will be spending the day alone. In Chicago, this troubling condition is related to the fact that over 50 percent of children are born outof-wedlock. This statistic translates into the harsh reality that many of these children will never know their dads. This is not just a vital statistic, but an alarming societal issue for our nation that needs to be confronted head-on and solved. We should never forget that, “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” according to Nelson Mandela The national average for this statistic is lower but not by much – 40 percent of children born in the United www.chicagodefender.com

States are born out-of-wedlock. This converts into millions of children living absent their biological father. Not good, considering these children are, on average, more likely to be poor, experience educational problems, become victims of abuse, and engage in criminal behavior. This is very serious, because the most reliable predictor of crime in America is father absence. But there is hope, because fathers have legal rights and young men are now placing fatherhood and family time at the top of their list of priorities. As Dr. Sigmund Freud said, “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” I have worked my entire professional life promoting the importance of paternal involvement, as well as the importance of fatherhood. It was an honor to help reunite 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba and co-author The Illinois Joint Custody Law and other legislation. Chairing the Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood is another means to give back to children in all communities in the state of Illinois. Unfortunately, not all fathers are aware of their rights or the resources available to them in fighting for those rights. To improve the well-being of America’s children, we must restore paternal involvement as a societal norm in all communities and never forget that any man’s loss of a child is a loss to mankind. For more information on law and fatherhood, follow me on Twitter @fathersmatter and Facebook.
