What Happened to a Robust Community? By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer Contributing: Bianca Herron In the early 1900s, editor and founder of the Chicago Defender Robert Sengstacke Abbott urged Blacks to come to the north, especially Chicago, by advertising successful Black individuals in the city with many job opportunities and a boisterous social and entertainment life as inspiration for Blacks to leave the South. The communities were robust and self-sustaining with vibrant business districts that anchored the neighborhoods, like Madison and Pulaski in West Garfield Park, which rivaled downtown at one point: Pulaski and 16th-22nd Streets in North Lawndale and the Central and Lake Street corridor in Austin. Drawn by the lure of jobs in the many factories that lined industrial districts like Lake Street, Western Avenue and Roosevelt Road, the newly arrived Black migrants settled in communities like North Lawndale, East and West Garfield Park, and eventually Austin becoming a thriving people who created their own churches, community organizations and businesses, including grocery stores and schools. U.S. Census data during this time reported that a half gallon of milk was $.26, a dozen eggs $.33 and round steak was $.36 per pound. Rent was $30 per month and annual earnings were $1,761 for a 20-year-old and above Black male, and $992 for a Black woman 20 and above. The median income for a state and local government worker was $1,479, $1,435 for a schoolteacher, $1,330 for the building trades, and $927 for a health care worker. Ninety-year-old Juanita Tharpe is quite familiar with these prices, she told the Chicago Defender. She left Paris, Tennessee, at the age of 17. “There was nothing for us to do other than pick cotton in the fields. I wasn’t going to do that, and I wanted more out of life.” She caught the train with a quarter in her pocket and only a candy bar; the year was 1944. She moved in with her aunt, Susie Teague, a homemaker, and her husband, Robert Teague, a steel mill worker, at 233 N. Fairfield in East Garfield Park. Her first job was working at a coffee pot manufacturer at 33 N. Des Plaines Ave. “I packaged the coffee pots and the tops in boxes. We shipped to restaurants around the country and overseas due to the war,” she recalled. “I made $1.50 per hour, about $60 per week. I paid $5 a month for rent.” “There were nice ma and pa stores like Ms. Tilly’s on Fulton and Fairfield who sold pop, candy, ice cream and stuff like that. Beauty shops. Churches – there were five churches within walking distance – Methodist and Baptist.” “We went to Gammon Methodist Church,” she stated.
Not Much Crime
For entertainment, Juanita liked going to the movies. “Theaters were everywhere. The Empirical was on Madison and Western. The American on Ashland Avenue, the Four Stars – it was beautiful, just like downtown, before King got

That’s when things started changing.” Ninety-year-old North Lawndale resident Elbert Fox, a WWII veteran who migrated from Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 1952. He and his wife, Minnie Grady, lived at 1516 S. Springfield and raised their 10 children in a single-family home. Lawndale was stable but rapidly changing. There were a few whites who lived on his block, but “whites were mostly on the west side of Pulaski,” he stated. Fox confirms the once vibrant business districts that serviced the community. “You didn’t have to go to the loop area or out to the mall to shop,” he said. “At that time, there were businesses up and down Roosevelt Road, Pulaski and 22nd Streets. Everything was in the area you lived. If you couldn’t find it anywhere between Madison and 22nd, it’s not in Chicago,” he declared. He shared what brought him to Chicago: work. “I came to find a better job, to make a better dollar,” he stated. Fox worked long hours at Burton Auto Springs factory while his wife took care of the house and their 10 children. He admits that the long hours created tension in the

relationship and things weren’t always smooth between him and his wife. His church, Mercy Seat Baptist, played a key role in keeping him centered. As a deacon, “I turned to the church for strength when things got rough.” he stated. Out of necessity, Fox started his own livery cab business in 1964, which was “easy to do. You didn’t have all those rules back then.” At its height, he employed about a dozen drivers who provided transportation to Blacks who worked in the factories and downtown, and who couldn’t get rides from white livery drivers. “It was work taking care of all the kids, but you could make it because everything was cheap. Gas was $.25 a gallon. Groceries, I would spend around $200 a month. You could buy a house for under 30,000. You could make it then. We stuck together. Nowadays, everything is so expensive and we don’t own our own businesses. And everyone is out for themselves.”

what does it take to form a more perfect union? This year marks the 225th anniversary of the Bill of Rights. To honor this milestone, the National Archives, with major support from AT&T, presents “Amending America.” This new exhibit highlights the remarkably American story of how our country has amended, or attempted to amend, the Constitution to create a more just society. And to engage all of America in this important discussion the National Archives Foundation is working with AT&T to bring the National Archives’ “National Conversations on Rights and Justice” to cities around the country and online. “Back in the day, there was a sense of camaraderie as a whole community,” she said. “The businesses were more vested in us, as we were in them. That’s why the businesses were flourishing — and we had a lot of them including banks — and the community too because of it.” The Chicago Defender asked the question: What happened to the foundation and strong sense of pride that the West Siders always had? Our connection and love of oneself and our neighbors and communities? Dr. Binion said. “The problem with that is that when people have taken from our community, they have never given back. And after so much taking and never putting back, what you see today is what you’re left with.” “That reinvestment — be it from an individual, business, organization or members of the community — is a main reason as to why the Austin community isn’t flourishing today,” she says. “You had more of the family – grandmother, grandfather. The family lineage was more intact. “What kept the community together were the churches, they were a big influence. And we weren’t obsessed with celebrity culture, we had pride back then,” says 52-year-old James Morgan, a Cook County employee whose family moved into Austin in the early ’70s. “We had mentors that looked out for us,” he added. Morgan, a graduate of Westinghouse High School, said one of his mentors – an Italian teacher named Frank Loleno — was instrumental in him going to college. He pushed me to go.” “Mark Aguirre, a Westinghouse alumnus who played for the DePaul Blue Demons, and later the Dallas Mavericks, would come back every year and tell us how important we were and that we could be successful. My first job in high school was through Mayor Jayne Byrne’s summer program as a youth counselor at the local YMCA. I made $5 per hour [that’s $3 less than the minimum wage is in 2016, and yet the cost of living has doubled] and that job helped me to appreciate work, accomplishing something in my life,” Morgan insisted. Morgan went on to tell the Defender that today’s youth have very little one-on-one mentoring and people counseling and talking to them about education and the value of work. “I don’t see that anymore. The adults are afraid of the youth because they’re carrying weapons, selling drugs and looking for fast money.

We don’t have their ear anymore,” he said. “They have each other’s ears and it’s the blind leading the blind.” A West Garfield Park resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said he agrees with Morgan about the lure of “fast money.” In his first year, at the tender age of sixteen, Brown dropped out of High School to “hustle,” he shared in a late-night interview. “My parents complained for a minute, but they recontinued on, Page 07

Unraveling the White Agenda E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor
Confronting the issue of racism has never been easy. Even now as it literally blows up in our face, there are those who wish to deny or accept any responsibility in its reality. So let me say it loud: The terror of being a victim of violence just because I’m Black is real. I have grappled with all that is happening, all that we as a people experience as recently as Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Antwun Shumpert, the Dallas 5 and the subsequent shooting of police. I am human. Yes, I feel for all people, but I want to talk straight unapologetically about race relations between white people and Black people, The Race as penned by the founding publisher/editor of the Chicago Defender, Robert Abbott Sengstacke, without feeling obligated to include others in this discussion. So let us begin. Recently, I spoke on the legacy of racial terror and its impact on The Race. For most, my words probably were understood intellectually. For others, it went over their heads, and to some they were viewed as an excuse for much of the unexplained behavior in which our people engage. Right now, I hear the police sirens while writing, my stomach begins to knot. I wonder what Black man or woman is in trouble at the hands of the police. Is this natural to respond as such? Yes, just as natural as Dr. Brian Williams — a surgeon at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, on the front line of saving police officers wounded in the line of duty, who did so Thursday night when 14 police officers and two civilians were shot by a sniper — said at a news conference, “This is much more complicated for me personally. There’s this dichotomy where I’m standing with law en-
forcement, but I also personally feel that angst that comes when you cross the path of an officer in uniform and you’re fearing for your safety. I’ve been there, and I understand that,” he said. We get that. His remarks generated an immediate reaction, causing him to trend on Twitter and prompting dozens of emails to Parkland from across the country. One message, from a former mayor in Michigan, said, “I applaud your work and your comments.” A handful of email messages were less kind. They called Williams irresponsible, incoherent and irrational for discussing race in the context of medicine. Umm, they should address the Bessie Smith incident, where she was turned away by the white hospital and died consequently; the victims and their families of the Tuskegee Experiments; and all the countless times Blacks were not served by white doctors/hospitals. Let’s talk about race in the context of medicine and everything where racism exists. Let us not leave a stone unturned. Let’s look at Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams, who recently won the BET Humanitarian Award and delivered a powerful speech. He said, “Looking at the data, and we know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm and not kill white people every day. So what’s going to happen is we are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country, or we will restructure their function and ours.” His speech went viral. And guess what? It was quickly removed from Facebook. He was attacked by whites; there was discussion of him being fired from his role on Grey’s Anatomy and more, all because he spoke the truth. This is what you do as a free man in America. You can speak your mind according to the First Amendment. However, we are always reminded that at the end of the Civil War, the nation did nothing to address the narrative of racial difference that continues to be the most enduring residual effect of American slavery. And the fact that The Race has learned to work around it as best we can, whites have obvi-

The problem we are addressing here is the issue of white racism exhibited through the police forces across the country as direct acts of violence toward Blacks, particularly Black men. ously taken this way of working through the obstacle for granted and apparently have assumed that we have accepted it. This is obviously far from the truth. Our actions, contrary to popular belief, can be viewed as a means to keep the peace. Even though on the other hand it is constantly thrown in our face that the majority of crimes committed against us are Blackon-Black crime. And? The same is true of all crimes committed against any race. More whites commit crimes against whites. So? But I’d beg to differ if we were to examine closely the number of Blacks killed by terror brought upon them by whites throughout the 397 odd years Blacks have been living in America under its racist system.
Give Equal Opportunity
Be clear: We cannot not look at what we do to ourselves, and yet we must be more compassionate toward ourselves. I know that when you’re in the thick of the war zone, dodging stray bullets and drug-addicted zombies, robberies at gunpoint, fearing for your safety and your family’s that it seems that there is no room for forgiveness. And what Rudy Giuliani says makes sense, “is how and what they are doing among themselves about the crime problem in the black community.” He added, “We wonder, do black lives matter, or only the very few black lives that are killed by white policemen?” The audacity of Giuliani, who is very much the epitome of a self-righteous racist. For that

very reason we must love ourselves more. The problem we are addressing here, however, is the issue of white racism exhibited through the police forces across the country as direct acts of violence toward Blacks, particularly Black men. Give us our equal opportunity to experience the freedoms to exist, and to participate in and reap the rewards of being an American. Allow us equal opportunity to grow, evolve, and be self-determined; to have access to educational, employment, commerce, and any other opportunity that serves to build healthy communities that thrive and contribute positively to society. I am sorry that our Black men feel backed up against the wall and that they feel their only recourse is to kill police officers as an act of self-defense, revenge or declaration of their manhood. We do not and cannot condone murder, and yet our compassion allows us to understand this place our men have come to. But to white America I pose this question: What do you ex-
pect when you oppress a people’s right to be self-expressed and crush all semblance of hope? These young men who fight back the only way they know how are like pressure cookers waiting to explode. They look around them and they think, “Damned if I do, damned if I don’t. If I hold my hands up, I get shot. If I put my hands behind my back to be cuffed, I get shot. If they pin me to the ground and I don’t move, I get shot. If I reach for my wallet, I get shot. If I am a child playing in the park, I get shot. If I’m riding my bike, I’m stopped, pulled off the bike, wrestled down and shot. If I’m pulled over for a broken tail light, I get shot. If I cooperate, I get shot. if I am Black and talk about the state of being Black, I get shot. If I am leading peaceful protests, I get shot. So why not take a few police with me if I’m going to die anyway, because clearly my time is coming. I’m going to be shot just being Black physically or figuratively.” The terror of being a victim of violence just because I’m Black is real. www.chicagodefender.com
FRONT PAGE JUMP their advancement.” Bates says It’s going to take a widespread multilateral movement to win back the trust of the community. “A trust fund or West Side grant needs to be created to rebuild our communities so we can offer the youth jobs and lifetime skills.” George Manning, retired Director of Clinical Compliance at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois, who lives in Austin in an 18-room Queen Anne mansion, sums it all up. “The West Side community [geographically] is the same, but the people have changed.” Manning insists that technol-

ally didn’t do much.” “I had a mentor,” he proclaims “ . . . but they were showing me how to get the money. It wasn’t those that tell you to stay in school. Once l saw the money, I fell in love and wasn’t trying to hear that stay in school stuff.” At his high point, Brown was making $500 on a good day using his God-given talent: his charisma. He admits that he spent the money on food, clothes, liquor, partying and helping his sister, who had small children. After close to a decade of dealing, Brown had had enough; the former A and B student decided to call it quits and was fortunate to not have any felonies or major arrests on his record, other than being arrested for public intoxication. The now 30 something-yearold looks back and reflects with wisdom “I understand why they do it. The young people don’t want to work because the jobs aren’t paying right. But you couldn’t sell drugs or shoot people if the white man didn’t bring the drugs into the community. And the guns – a lot of straw buyers go out of town to buy them and bring them back. They also rob the freight trains for the guns being shipped through Chicago late at night.” When asked what can be done to help today’s youth, he said: www.chicagodefender.com
“They need to do more listening than running their mouths. It starts with the parents. If your parents are not anything then the kids will most likely not be anything. If they see something positive, then they’ll do something positive. If they see something negative: Then what do you expect them to do? Everything is taught and nobody can be something they can’t see.” Geraldine Blair, being aware of the power of the media, echoes Brown’s opinion in that Blacks need to pay attention to what they allow themselves to watch and listen to. “The media controls what we see and hear. Whatever message is communicated is what people eventually act out,” she asserts.

Blair says her parents, Jeremiah and Hellen Walls, came to Chicago in the 1940s. Their first stop was in Bronzeville, but was brief because they soon saved money for a down payment and bought a frame house on the West Side, on 14th Street in Lawndale. “Blacks weren’t allowed to take out mortgages at the time because of Jim Crow laws,” she said. “You had to buy under contract.” The term “contract” meaning the person who legally owned the property could sell the property
usually at inflated values under complicated contracts until the property was paid in full. If you missed one payment, the owner would evict the Black family, keeping all the money they spent on previous payments, including maintenance and repairs. Owners would then find another Black family to exploit, thus repeating the process. Blair, an award-winning broker for Coldwell Banker who lives in a gray stone 3-flat in East Garfield Park, says today “major gentrification” is taking place. “It looks like Jim Crow in reverse. Blacks are moving out to the suburbs and wealthy whites are moving into our blighted communities,” she told the Defender. Samantha Bates — a 42-yearold tireless activist — rattled off a list of stores her family shopped at: Community Center, Woolworth, Black Giant Food Mart, Goldblatts, Zayres, Giles Food Market, and recalled when the neighborhood she grew up in was quiet and peaceful. “Everybody knew each other, and the youth had respect for the adults. If the youth did something, the adults would chastise them and send them home to be disciplined again.” Bates doesn’t mince her words and says the pride that West Siders once had was “ . . . stolen by the aldermen, the churches and government officials that used the people for

Jesse Williams’ Speech on Race, and a Vile Response Given the current climate of relations between Black and white America, we have to assess the continued horrific crimes against Blacks and our status. Therefore, it’s important that we stay tuned in and keep our minds open and thinking, processing information logically and applying reason to remain sound of mind. If you missed the BET Awards broadcast in June, you missed actor Jesse Williams’ speech as the recipient of the 2016 BET Humanitarian Award presented by State Farm: Actor Jesse Williams’ Speech “This award, this is not for me. This is for the real organizers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students, that are realizing that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do. It’s kind of basic mathematics, the more we learn about who we are and how we got here, the more we will mobilize. Now this is also in particular for the Black women who have spent their
lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you. “Now what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm and not kill white people every day. So what’s going to happen is we are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country, or we will restructure their function and ours. “Yesterday would’ve been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday, so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on a 12-year-old playing alone in a park in broad daylight, killing him on television then going home to make a sandwich. Tell Rekia Boyd how it’s so much better to live in 2012 than 1612 or 1712. Tell that to Eric Garner. Tell that to Sandra Bland. Tell that to Darrien Hunt. “Now the thing is though, all of us in here getting money, that alone isn’t going to stop this. Now dedicating our lives to get money just to give it right back for some-

bodies. “There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There has been no job we haven’t done, there’s been no tax they haven’t levied against us, and we’ve paid all of them. But freedom is somehow always conditional here, ‘You’re free,’ they keep telling us, ‘But she would’ve been alive if she hadn’t acted so … free’. “Freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but, you know what though, the hereafter is a hustle. And let’s get a couple of things straight, just a little side note, the burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job, stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest in equal rights for Black people then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down. “We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting
while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying Black people out of sight and out of mind, while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold. Ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is, just because we’re magic doesn’t mean we’re not real.” Black people, this is what we are facing. We had better stand up, as Jesse has informed us we must.

Jesse Williams is a pathological liar and so are the majority of Blacks, as is clear from the audience, media response and morons posting nonsensical comments. “See, that’s the major difference between the White Right and all the untermenschen Jews, libs and Third World scum. We don’t mind allowing anti-white idiots like Jesse Williams to speak. It only strengthens our position. Black militant behavior actually helps wake up clueless white cucks from their Judeo-Christian stupors. Whites need to feel threatened as they have grown too soft and comfortable. “Leftist assholes want to ‘shut whites down’ because they know we speak the truth and demons can’t bear to hear the truth spoken. “The choice is simple: Do you want to live under Third World socialism with Jewish elites where whites are constantly abused and exploited, eventually mongrelized into oblivion, or do you want to live in a free and white First World country truly independent from the Semitic liars and thieves? Any sane white person who isn’t a despicable, masochistic cuck will choose the White Right path.” www.chicagodefender.com

Homer Bryant: Hiplet to Hollywood Their celebrity has taken the fashion world by storm, becoming a part of the Versace Fashion Week 16 Collection ‘Chicago Is My Beat’ film by Bruce Weber in June.
Homer Bryant works with students in his school of dance. Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor The beautiful world of dance is often connected to the grace and technical artistry that are so elegantly displayed by one’s movements. Whether it’s onstage in front of a live audience, on the dance floor of a packed club or in the backyard of a house party, dance is the sister of music that connects us all together. Homer Hans Bryant has become a part of this world ever since he and a friend were drawn into dance class in his native home of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. For the past month, the founder and executive director of the esteemed Chicago Multicultural Dance Company was thrust into the international spotlight when he uploaded a video of his students enjoying an evening of “Hiplet Sur Les Pointes.” The video has drawn close to 8.9 million views, catapulting the CMDC into a press and media frenzy. He says posting videos of his students in dance class wasn’t out of the normal routine because he enjoyed showing off their talent and building an appreciation through social media — until a Brazilian dance company decided to make fun of his group of talented dancers. “Every Friday night, we do the Hiplet class for an hour. Throughout the week, we have serious ballet — this is just an hour of fun. But every Friday I would post some Hiplet or the kids doing ballet in class. A Brazilian dance company, So Bailarinos, put my dance on their Facebook page with the emoji laughing faces and the tears,” he said. “In my mind they were dissing me. www.chicagodefender.com
Buzzfeed picked it up, gave us a call and the next thing we know we went viral.” The Kenwood school started as the Homer Bryant Dance Company began building a very diverse student base. He felt transitioning into CMDC was beneficial for his mission to young students. The vision of Bryant’s dance teacher Jane Miles’ belief in him landed him a scholarship to Jacob’s Pillow Dance Center in Becket, Massachusetts. She saw the necessity of including classical ballet training to broaden his training. Leaving the comforts of home, he traveled to Brooklyn, New York, where he had family. He said, “They drove me to Massachusetts to the summer program.” Bryant says he immediately received a hard dose of reality. “Every man in the program could out jump me and out turn me. I knew I should’ve listened to her and taken this ballet road. Then I started to get serious about it because these guys could out turn me and out jump me.”
Opportunity Knocks
One afternoon while sweeping the floors at the dance center, he had the opportunity to meet the legendary dancer and Artistic Director Arthur Mitchell. “At the time, he had 10 dancers because he was doing a lecture series to get the word out that he’s starting the company. We just connected — I asked him if I could take a class.” Soon after, he was invited to work and train at the Dance School of Harlem. On a partial scholarship, Bryant found himself making $75 a week, cleaning the dance floors and working around the studios.
He was given a chance to audition along with three other male dancers when Mitchell’s lead dancer dropped out because of visa problems. During his lunch break, three female dancers helped prepare him for the lead audition. “When everybody else went to lunch, I asked Virginia Johnson, Gail McKinney and Rhonda Samson, who later became my wife.” He toured with the Dance School of Harlem for a few years and eventually found his way to Chicago over two decades later. Forming his own dance company in 1990. From ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, African and tap — the variety of choices are broad. Beginning from three years old where they learn the functions of Creative movement, Camaraderie Point,
Dance Terminology, learning to sit still, listen to the teacher, improvisation — later learning choreography, basic hip hop, tap, acrobatics, and more advanced classes going up to Ballet Five. With the success of Hiplet going viral, Bryant and his dance students seen in the video ranging from 13 to 16 years old have traveled to New York, appearing on Good Morning America, Windy City Live and other media outlets. Their celebrity has taken the fashion world by storm, becoming a part of the Versace Fashion Week 16 Collection “Chicago Is My Beat” film by Bruce Weber in June. He explains, “When the kids would say, ‘Mr. Bryant it hurts.’ I tell them, ‘It’s slightly ‘uncomfortable’ — get used to it — life is going to be slightly uncomfortable.’ We do not use the word ‘hurt’ at my school.”

Programs Can Help You With IRS Problems By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer If you are one of the thousands of taxpayers dealing with IRS collection or enforcement actions, you may feel there is no way to get relief. Collection agents may have visited your home; they may have talked to your neighbors. They may have visited your place of employment; they may have spoken to your employer or co-workers. You may have even received “certified” letters in the mail. You never want to ignore the IRS! If they think you owe them money, they can clean out your bank account, take part of your paycheck and place liens on your home and everything else you own. These actions are intended to get your attention and bring you to your knees so that you will agree to whatever terms they demand. If the IRS is auditing you, the auditors may require documents from a few years ago that are difficult to locate. If you can’t find these quickly enough to satisfy them, they may disallow your deductions and chalk up additional taxes for you to pay. They sometimes have the attitude that everyone is cheating the government. They may be inflexible and expect you to pay amounts you do not have, and meet deadlines you find impossible. All things considered, it is no wonder citizens feel the Internal Revenue Service is unfair and uncaring. However, the reality is that you have rights when dealing with the IRS, and there are several programs available that may provide relief from the harsh actions the IRS has taken or is threatening to take.
Get Your Life Back
These rights and programs can be used to resolve your tax problem and provide the path to ending the IRS nightmare. If you have unpaid taxes or unfiled tax returns, you must end the pain and get your life back. Some of the programs include: •Offer in Compromise, which is a settlement for the amount you can afford rather than the amount you owe, plus penalties and interest. •Installment Agreement plans that provide an opportunity to pay what you owe over an extended period of time. •Bankruptcy can eliminate certain tax debts when they meet the conditions for discharge. 10 July 13 - 19, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
If you have unpaid taxes or unfiled tax returns, you must end the pain and get your life back. •Innocent Spouse Relief may remove you from responsibility for taxes due that should be the responsibility of your spouse or former spouse. • The Internal Revenue Service has 10 years to collect a balance due from a taxpayer. The statute of limitations on collection starts when the tax is assessed and continues for 10 years. Certain events like bankruptcy, filing an Offer in Compromise, or requesting a Collection Due Process Hearing suspend the running of the 10 years for the time they are pending, plus a tack-on period. •Penalty abatement may reduce your balance due by eliminating the onerous penalties the IRS has added to the tax owed. The interest on any abated penalty is also eliminated when the penalty is removed. As you can see from this short list of some of the IRS programs, there are many options available to afford you relief. However, you cannot rely on the Internal Revenue Service to search out and recommend what is your best alternative. It is their job to collect as many tax dollars as possible and as quickly as possible. Don’t be embarrassed; you are not alone. There are millions of people who have unfiled or unpaid taxes. Now is the time to begin the process of resolving your IRS issues. Remember, for every tax problem, there’s a solution. Constant W. Jacinta Fisher: Turning Her Passion Into Business Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Starting your own business can sometimes become a frustrating and grueling process when you’re wearing several hats. Many start-up companies are modest in their approach to building a clientele who is already aware of their services, and this can make the challenges less bumpy. Jacinta Fisher threw her hat into the fresh pool of new companies making moves in the interior design community. Running one of the few African-American owned and operated design décor firms in Chicago, she has already created a name for herself beyond her unique, celebrity circle of friends. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the South Shore community, Fisher attended Hyde Park Career Academy — eventually acquiring her BA in Marketing at Chicago State University. Her entrepreneurial spirit began in high school when she launched her own cleaning service, applying her organizational skills into a side-hustle earning her some extra cash. She laughs, “I’m a little OCD, so cleaning is very therapeutic. As a child, I’ve always cleaned to calm down.” Fisher said her inspiration comes from the strong

I got my work ethic from my mom. I would see her working at such a young age — being a single mom to myself and brother. Her marketing company LF Promo took a great deal of her time until her husband, NFL player Levar Fisher, retired from professional football in 2008. Jacinta Fisher formed JMF Interior Design in May 2015. zona Cardinals, she began to help him with his career off the field — along with two of his teammates. “I knew how to go after sponsorships, and working with the NFL. I tried to get a job at one point with the NFL — with the Cardinals. They said no, conflict of interest, of course. That was my niche — I knew how to do these things, so I made it into a company,” said Fisher.
Career Takes Off Before she knew it, the former model was off and running, developing brand presentations, helping athletes to set up their foundations, special events and partnerships. Familiar with the NFL, she became a solid adviser for players who wanted their message to be heard. It came down to what their niche was and what they wanted their message to be. “That’s how I tried to represent each client. But they were similar because they all wanted a non profit, they wanted something they could give back to their families, or have their families participate with their organizations. That was the common denominator.” After Levar Fisher was released from the New Orleans Saints, they both felt it was good to move to Jacinta’s hometown to be closer to her family. Although he was from North Carolina and she was from Chicago, they were young and welcomed the added support system raising two daughters. Having worked with the wives’ club in the NFL, Fisher would help decorate some of their homes as a hobby. As more players and their wives began to request her services, she realized it was more than a hobby.
“One lady would see someone’s house I did, or can I come over to do another person’s home? That became my niche. I did my mom’s, grandparents’, aunt’s salon and went on year after year. I never thought it would become a career. I just enjoyed shopping for people, designing rooms and doing makeover projects. It just happened.” She formed JMF Interior Design in her kitchen in May 2015 when a realtor requested her services to stage her homes for market sale. “In order to do that, they wanted to know our business. In that moment, I formed JMF. I knew how to do this by working with my husband and other athletes. I researched other designers — most use their names or acronyms.” Since then, her business has gradually escalated through referrals and the power of social media. Her love for providing a unique and downhome style to fit her client’s individual style has led her to launch her JMF Home Collections. The collection includes her candle and pillow line — both available on her website. “At first I was discouraged because I didn’t know the process, but the candles, bedding, pillows — this has to be super simple. It helped to be around knowing somebody who knows somebody.” What is her advice for those who want to turn a passion into a profit? “Open your mouth and ask questions. You have to be able to use your network. Your network is your net worth. There are so many people that want to keep information to themselves because they don’t think people would help you. My philosophy is it’s enough for everybody, and most people don’t think that way.” www.chicagodefender.com
BUSINESS By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer When the Obama administration lifted the decades-old embargo against the Iranian government earlier this year, local entrepreneur and Hyde Parker Yahnamore Zebulun immediately saw an opportunity. Zebulun holds fond memories of the taste of pistachios growing up in the ’70s prior to the 1979 embargo. “I remember how delicious pistachios were when I was growing up,” he told the Chicago Defender. Native to the Middle East – namely Turkey, Syria, Greece and, especially, Iran – pistachio trees have been cultivated there for thousands of years. This is particularly in the sun-soaked regions of Yazd and Kerman, so it stands to reason that some of the best pistachios would hail from this region of the world. Zebulun, who was inspired by his many travels to Dubai and Egypt, says he always stopped by the pistachio stores. “On my last trip to Bahrain, I realized that I wouldn’t be making this trip again any time soon and wouldn’t have access to the pistachios I’ve come to love,” he insisted. He started engaging Iranian farmers with the hope of doing business and was met with overwhelming rejection because of cultural reasons. “The farmers are very selective in who they want to work with and sell their pistachios to. And me being American, they were very hesitant.” It didn’t help that he had a Hebrew name, he told the Defender. According to Zebulun, “pistachios in the Middle East, especially in Iran, are looked at as a status symbol within their culture,” he said. “When fathers give their daughters away in marriage, it’s their obligation to have the most expensive pistachios like the long Akbari nut.”
Key to Culture
An important part of their everyday culture, pistachios are revered and included in every aspect of Iranian culture. From Norooz celebrations (Persian New Year), to weddings and funerals, pistachios are highly cherished and coveted. It could be considered an insult to enter someone’s house and not eat some of their pistachios. A billion-dollar business annually in the U.S., pistachios are being looked at for their health benefits as well as for taste. According to the American Pistachio Growers Association, pistachios contain vitamin B6 and minerals like copper, phosphorus and thiamin. And when eaten instead of carbohydrate-rich foods, they helped maintain healthy blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetic patients. www.chicagodefender.com
A Hyde Park Man’s Path to the
Pistachios
A billion-dollar business annually in the U.S., pistachios are being looked at for their health benefits as well as for taste. Eating tree nuts helped lower mortality rates, a 2013 New England Journal of Medicine study concluded, the largest ever of its kind. The study analyzed the cause-specific mortality rates among 76,000 women and 42,000 men who were diagnosed with either cancer, respiratory or heart disease. The study noted the causal relationship between eating nuts — a nutrient-dense food, rich in fiber and mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids — and lowered mortality rates. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that you get your fats primarily from unsaturated sources such as pistachio nuts. After his initial rejection, Zebulun came up with a plan to persuade the farmers to trust him and accept his business offer. “First of all, they don’t need my business. They’re wealthy and have business ties that they’ve been working with forever.” Zebulun took the unique approach of sending the farmers pictures of his travels throughout the Middle East with local natives from each country. “When they saw that I was a Black American in the photos, everything changed,” he said. For the past six months, Zebulun has sold out every shipment he has imported from overseas. Known as Iranian Gold Pistachios,
he insists that the freshness is superb and goes from harvesting to client within 30 days. “I don’t keep any product past 30 days. They sell out fast, so everything is always fresh.”
Alice Baldwin, a School of the Art Institute Chicago student, tried the pistachios and noticed a difference with the first bite “They’re very hearty and purple on the outside,” she said. “I’ve never seen
that. They taste organic and complex, depending on the size of the nut. Other pistachios all taste the same. These each taste slightly different but all within the same taste range.” Clients love the rich, buttery taste, said Zebulun, and Bonnie Pugh, a home health care provider, says “the taste is tender and delicious and they’re not green.” To place an order, go to Amazon. com and search for Iranian Gold Pistachios. Zebulun says they’re on sale for the month of July, and a 2-pound bag is $25.99 plus shipping. You’ll be glad you did.

Common Reactions Experienced in the Face of Traumatic Exposure By Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer In light of all that has happened in the context of terror targeted toward Blacks in America, we have to look at the impact and the effect it has on our overall well-being. The idea of being terrorized is not to be taken lightly. In fact America seems to take it quite seriously when terror involves Americans. As we have all witnessed after a mass shooting, or bombing, deliberately set fires, etc., the survivors are sent grievance counselors, therapists, and the clergy to help them after such a traumatic experience. Unfortunately, Blacks have been terrorized the entire period from 1619 to the current year 2016, 397 years. And never have the Blacks involved in lynchings, or the trauma of Emmett Till (and others), the water hosing, beating with police billy clubs, being spat on, pushed, shoved, kicked, beaten, bodies mutilated, bodies dragged tied to a car, and so many more horrific crimes done to Blacks throughout in America. Though post–traumatic stress disorder is usually associated with war and terror, we might conclude that the continued acts of racists be seen as terror causing Blacks major duress. Blacks suffer the residual impact at the hands of racist terrorist in America.
Various Responses
Emotional responses during a traumatic event may include shock, in which the individual may present a highly anxious, active response or perhaps a seemingly stunned, emotionally numb response. He may describe feeling as though he is “in a fog.” He may exhibit denial, in which there is an inability to acknowledge the impact of the situation, or perhaps that the situation has occurred. He may evidence dissociation, in which he may seem dazed and apathetic, and he may express feelings of unreality. Other frequently observed acute emotional responses might include panic, fear, and intense feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, helplessness, emptiness, uncertainty, horror, terror, anger, hostility, irritability, depression, grief and guilt. Cognitive Responses to traumatic exposure are often reflected 14 July 13 - 19, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Though post– traumatic stress disorder is usually associated with war and terror, we might conclude that the continued acts of racists be seen as terror causing Blacks major duress. in impaired concentration, confusion, disorientation, difficulty in making a decision, a short attention span, suggestibility, vulnerability, forgetfulness, self-blame, blaming others, lowered self-efficacy, thoughts of losing control, hypervigilance, and perseverate thoughts of the traumatic event. For example, upon extrication of a survivor from an automobile accident, he may cognitively still “be in” the automobile “playing the tape” of the accident over and over in his mind. Behavioral responses in the face of a traumatic event may include withdrawal, “spacing-out,” non-communication, changes in speech patterns, regressive behaviors, erratic movements, impulsivity, a reluctance to abandon property, seemingly aimless walking, an inability to sit still, an exaggerated startle response and antisocial behaviors. Physiological responses may include rapid heartbeat, elevated blood pressure, difficulty breathing, shock symptoms, chest pains, cardiac palpitations, muscle tension and pains, fatigue, fainting, flushed face, pale appearance, chills, cold clammy skin, increased sweating, thirst, dizziness, vertigo, hyperventilation, headaches, grinding of teeth, twitches and gastrointestinal upset. Such responses to terror among Blacks have been repressed because Blacks have learned to accept it as part of their life in America. However, studies that research the long-term impact show that this stress disorder affects the overall life expectancy in Blacks and the types of diseases for which they appear to have a greater propensity. www.chicagodefender.com

In Maudlyne Ihejirika’s skillfully written Escape From Nigeria, A Memoir of Faith, Love and War, you will be moved to tears, and the joy will permeate you, causing an experience of pure delight. And if you are a man or woman on the fence about where you stand with God, should you allow yourself to be open to truth through another’s story you will definitely become a believer. As a top-notch journalist, Maudlyne is usually telling others’ stories, but this time it’s her story, and she does not disappoint. Written with the precision and skill of the journalist she is, it at first provides all the detailed facts and dates of a series of heralding experiences. These catastrophic experiences every step of the way posed obstacles that the average person would have given up on. And yet, we travel the journey with Angeline Ihejirika and her six children as she navigates the challenges in faith and pursuing the love that imbues her soul.
The authentic emotion expressed comes through, to move, touch and captivate you as the creative articulation of a novelist, and you are riveted with the highs and lows as experienced by the characters in the story who are actual people. This story of triumph will blow your mind and revitalize your belief in the power of faith. The story begins in Nigeria during the Biafran war for survival, which had shades of all the evils of war. Therefore, it was important that Maudlyne and her mother share the story with the Nigerian community in Chicago, some of whom also have stories of great escape. So they hosted a private book release party for Chicago’s Nigerian Community, attended by 250 people, at the DuSable Museum of African American History on May 14. On Wednesday July 13, they will host their first public book reading/signing at M Lounge, 1520 S. Wabash. Mark your calendar now and come prepared to hear Mrs. Angelina Ihejirika and Maudlyne share the telling of their escape from Nigeria to America.
