ADVERTORIAL
NNPA to Mobilize 20 Million Black Voters By Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. NNPA News Wire The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) proudly asserts that “We are the authentic voice of Black America.” As such today, there can be no more urgent clarion call to be articulated and promoted than the call for a massive historic and unprecedented Black American voter turnout on Nov. 8 across the nation. It is an undisputed fact that in 2008 a record number of Black Americans, 16,133,000, went to the polls and helped make Barack H. Obama the first Black American to be elected president of the United States. Then in 2012, 17,813,000 Black Americans went to the polls, for the first time in American history in a larger percentage national voter turnout over the percentage voter turnout by White Americans. Black Americans in 2012 turned out at 66.2 percent vs. 64.1 percent for White Americans. The NNPA is launching Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 million Black Voters to the Polls. More than 211 NNPA member publishers of Black American-owned newspapers and media companies are being called upon to issue front-page news coverage and motivational editorials, together with banner ads on their respective websites, to promote effective Black American Get-Out-TheVote (GOTV) campaigns. The NNPA is nonpartisan and a nonprofit national trade association. Yet, we have a responsibility to address all the issues that impact our communities. As we conclude the first term of our Discover the Unexpected (DTU) NNPA Journalism Fellowship Program with Howard University supported by Chevrolet, we are pleased that young journalism scholars like our NNPA fellows are on the front lines of youth civic participation in many cities nationally. Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 million Black Voters to the Polls will engage print, digital and social media. #BlackPressMatters #BlackVotesMatter @NNPA_BlackPress @ BlackPressUSA.com @NAACP The United States of America once again is at a pivotal and crucial political crossroads. The outcome of the Nov. 8th national elections will determine the future of the nation and of the world. This is a propitious moment not only for 47 million Black Americans, but also this is the time for all Americans to decide whether or not American de-

Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr.
“The United States of America once again is at a pivotal and crucial political crossroads.” mocracy will finally fully embrace the goals of freedom, justice, equality and empowerment for all people.
Your Vote Counts Don’t let anybody attempt to suggest that your vote does not count. Every vote counts if you vote. For some strange reason, there are some national pundits who are once again predicting a low voter turnout by Black America. These external pollsters and political observers really do not know Black America. This is one of the reasons the NNPA and other Black-owned media companies are so strategically important. The NNPA not only knows the facts about Black America, the NNPA reports and defends the interests of Black America without apology or compromise of principle and integrity. For nearly 190 years the Black Press in America has been and continues to be the “trusted voice” of Black America. No political party should take the Black vote for granted. Our votes have mattered and our votes will continue to matter. We will make the critical difference in the outcome

of the upcoming national elections. We have both a sacred obligation and a historic responsibility to ensure that we will have the largest Black American voter turnout in history. Why? Because the overall quality of life of our families and communities are at stake. Our energy, actions, and spirits must remain high and we have to fully engage the electoral process locally, regionally and nationally. The NNPA’s Project Black Voter Turnout 2016: 20 million Black Voters to the Polls will work in coalition with other national organizations: The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, NAACP, Rainbow Push, National Action Network, National Urban League, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Black Lives Matter, National Baptist Convention, Progressive National Baptist Convention, AME, AME Zion, COGIC, UCC, and the National Council of Churches. Our time is now. Let’s all work together. Let’s get out the vote! Benjamin F. Chavis is president of the National Newspapers Publishers Association.

HBCU Support Pushes Grads to Thrive By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer When Karen Walls dropped off her son Curtis at Clark Atlanta University, she knew he’d be OK. The 18-year-old honor student was smart, but ran into some trouble while hanging out with the wrong crowd at home in Chicago. “I was so worried about him not graduating from high school, yet he ended up being number eight in the class,” she says. “His grades have never been a problem.” So, after getting caught up, Curtis Walls faced a judge to see what would be next. His mother stepped in. “I had to fight for him to be able to leave and go to school,” Walls says. “I told the judge that it was either school or he couldn’t live with me.” The judge understood. By going to Clark, Walls’ son would have the opportunity to stay out of trouble and be under the mentorship of educators who understand him. She allowed him to leave the area and he was off. Immediately after reaching Atlanta, Walls saw the community rally around him. “His adviser was really encouraging,” she says. “He told him that he had helped him get a really good schedule so that he could do his best and be successful. He said it would set him up for a 4.0.” HBCU schools are known for their insight and commitment to the African-American student providing wisdom and skills to succeed in the world. The administration and professors understand the challenges of being Black and are aware of the details and specifics that can impact a student’s

They are there to provide life tools and act as guides as the students pursue their education. They are best equipped to give support and counsel troubled youth because some have faced the issues of poverty, and lack of opportunity. They know who their students are. Clark Atlanta University is one of the colleges heading to Chicago this week for the Chicago Football Classic and is a major recruiter of Chicago area teens like Curtis Walls. Getchel L. Caldwell II, senior vice president of institutional advancement and university relations at Clark Atlanta, says the university’s current freshman class has 88 students from Chicago, a number he hopes will more than double next year. “There are so many wonderful young Afro-American and brown people in the city that we want to capture,” Caldwell said during the event’s press conference this summer, stressing how well Chicago students perform while at Clark Atlanta. Recent research shows that it’s not only the academic offerings that make a college student successful. A 2015 Gallup study concluded that graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities like Clark Atlanta have a step up over other graduates.
Thriving socially, financially, and in other areas of well-being, HBCU graduates are more likely to have strong relationships, know their purpose in life, and are motivated to achieve goals, the study says. The graduates attributed their success to the support they received from their schools: 58 percent of Black graduates at HBCUs said they had a professor who cared for them, compared to only 25 percent of graduates at other schools. Sixteen years ago, Brad Walker was sitting in the same space as Curtis as a freshman at Clark Atlanta University — fearless, but not concerned with consequences. After Walker got into a brawl with a Morehouse student, a dean called him to his office on a weekend, sat him down, and straightened him out. Rick Robinson, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Clark Atlanta University, was not letting Walker throw away his opportunity. “He got right to the nitty gritty and told me that fighting was grounds for expulsion,” Walker says. “He said, ‘You can either get it together or I’ll book you a flight back to Chicago.’ That was minute one of a two-hour conversation that ended up having to be about everything other than why I was there in his office. He saw something in me that, at the time, I didn’t know I had.”
Teacher’s Kind Gesture
And of course, the support didn’t end there. When Walker later had problems with a class and told his professor that he was considering just dropping it, she invited him to have dinner at home with her family. “She told me that maybe I need-

That’s a step above mentorship. That’s ‘you’re my family, I value you being a success’ and I loved that feeling. You can’t measure how much love you get from people who make it their business to make you a success.” After graduation, Walker spent years working for Chicago Public Schools before heading to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. The interactions he had with his professors set the backdrop for his teaching approach. “I tried to give that type of feeling to my students,” he says. Across the street at fellow Atlanta University center member Morehouse College, a similar environment dominates how professors and administrators interact with students. This year, the historic all-male college welcomed the 730 new students who form its 150th class and who will join the ranks of men such as Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson. Among all of his duties as associate dean of student life, he helped Jackson find enough scholarships to stay in school and then added him to the Dreams to Teach program to expose him to even more opportunities. “Not only did I stay, but they put me in a program where we met every Friday and went over study tips continued on page 7

YOU . . . They, Them and Those E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor You’ve heard them accusingly say, “You people . . .” whether in your presence, on television, on the radio or video. And immediately your mind goes there. It evokes emotion provoked by racial stereotypes. The encyclopedia defines you people: 1. (pejorative) Any outsiders of a clique. 2. Members of a particular group, collectively. That is the type of thing you people would say. In the United States, this expression, however intended by the speaker, has been interpreted as indicative of racism when used in discourse with those of a race different from the speaker's, or of discrimination on an ethnic or religious basis in analogous situations. I recall once when radio personality Rush Limbaugh said, “You people love to take things and twist them to your favor,” in reference to Blacks. Sophistication has extended this form of racial profiling to various expressions of you people such as They, Them and Those. Often used as code, these word substitutions are used to replace the particular race being referred to in a conversation among one group, (race, ethnicity or religion) usually when something derogatory is being said about the race in question. While living in Los Angeles I recall hearing a representative of an LBGT organization say on KPFK radio, “We gave you people a Black
president and what do you do? You vote against gay marriage,” addressing a Black man who was also a guest on the show. The statement, like all stereotypes, assumes much and serves to support the position of assumed superiority by the speaker oftentimes grounded in the racist frame of reference from which the person making the statements rests. This form of intended hidden racism is rampant and quite commonly used in America as part of the cultural dialogue. Recently, a group of concerned citizens in Chicago met to discuss how they can best protect their community from Those outsiders who could pose a threat. At one point one of the leaders said, “We know who doesn’t belong here.” Another commented, “Yes we can identify Them quickly,” as they made suggestions about forming a neighborhood watch. This, the whites said even though among them were some of Them. Interesting. Even more interesting is that some of Them felt that they were the other and not Those who were being discussed. This is what whites have been able to do to marginalized people. They have brainwashed Them to the point that given some privileges, such as education, a decent or successful career/job, and a title, and enough money to live among the privileged class, They delude themselves to think They are one and the same as the whites, just like the house slaves believed themselves to be different and better than the field slaves, when in reality to the master they were one and the same. Travyon Martin was a victim of this sort of thinking. He was murdered by George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman's voice told a 911 dispatcher about "a real suspicious guy." "This guy looks like he's up to no good, or he's on drugs or something. It's raining, and he's just walking around."
“Often used as code, these word substitutions are used to replace the particular race being referred to in a conversation among one group, usually when something derogatory is being said about the race in question.” We know the rest of the story. Point is that even though Trayon’s father and stepmother were residents of the community Zimmerman was patrolling, he was assumed to be one of Them/an outsider and was murdered as a reflection of that frame of reference. Today this sort of language is used to defuse the racial accusations and has evolved from you people, They, Them and Those to legitimate words that, when appropriately used, take on a new meaning when spoken in that context. For instance, the rant of anti-reform Republican misinformed rabble rousers, “Keep your government hands off my Medicare.” It’s about the art of listening carefully when racists speak. If you pay attention you can actually hear the anger, the disdain accented on the word “government.” Ask who is the statement directed to? Word Substitution In this case it was President Obama. So what were they really saying? They were protesting health care reform, yes, but failing to grasp the extraordinary contradiction evident in receiving Medicare benefits while simultaneously shouting nonsense about “government-run health care” is quite astonishing. The spin that Republicans marketed against his proposed health care plan. Unfortunately, the “Keep your government, hands off my Medicare!" people remain ignorant, most of whom are a vast majority of Republican seniors who fail to understand that Medicare, Medicaid and the Veterans Administration are all government-run health care systems. The point here is that they have utilized the word “government” to
The Chicago Defender Platform Since 1905: 1. Prejudice and racism in all of its forms must be eliminated and destroyed. 2. Increase access and availability for quality, affordable housing for all. 8. Establish a living and fair wage as a fundamental right for all Americans. (Revised January 1966, May 2001)

replace the N-word. Coded language in America continues its ever-evolving, hidden meaning. Here it is the tonality, the anger and disdain that denotes what they actually wish to convey. Donald Trump is a different type of word manipulator master who often says one thing and when confronted with what he’s said, spins it to mean something else. Trump speaks double talk and, worse, he lies. When he met with Mexico’s president, he made no mention of the wall he has promised to build and have Mexico pay for, according to President Enrique Peña Nieto. The Mexico President said that Trump did not bring the subject up. In fact, the would-be U.S. president seemed remarkably unlike himself, expressing himself in a cooperative tone as he faced a world leader who adamantly opposes his signature proposals. Yet just hours later in a major speech on immigration in Phoenix, Trump returned to the forceful tone and persona that has defined much of his campaign, vowing, “anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation,” especially illegal immigrants who have committed other crimes. You know who he is. Trump is he who speaks with a forked tongue. Always. See what he thinks about Blacks:
Racial Bias Case Against Donald Trump When a Black woman asked to rent an apartment in a Brooklyn complex managed by Donald Trump’s real estate company, she said she was told that nothing was available. A short time later, a white woman who made the same request was invited to choose between two available apartments. The two would-be renters on that July 1972 day were actually undercover “testers” for a government-sanctioned investigation to determine whether Trump
Management Inc. discriminated against minorities seeking housing at properties across Brooklyn and Queens. Federal investigators also gathered evidence. Trump employees had secretly marked the applications of minorities with codes, such as “No. 9” and “C” for “colored,” according to government interview accounts filed in federal court. The employees allegedly directed Blacks and Puerto Ricans away from buildings with mostly white tenants, and steered them toward properties that had many minorities, the government filings alleged. In October 1973, the Justice Department filed a civil rights case that accused the Trump firm, whose complexes contained 14,000 apartments, of violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The case, one of the biggest federal housing-discrimination suits to be brought during that time, put a spotlight on the family empire led by its 27-year-old president, Donald Trump, and his father, Fred Trump, the chairman, who had begun building houses and apartments in the 1930s. The younger Trump demonstrated the brash, combative style that would make him famous, holding forth at a news conference in a Manhattan hotel to decry the government’s arguments as “such outrageous lies.” He would also say that the company wanted to avoid renting apartments to welfare recipients of any color but never discriminated based on race. For Trump, whose statements as a presidential candidate about Mexican immigrants, women and Muslims have drawn charges of racism and sexism, his role as a defendant in a discrimination case put him near the center of a civil rights-era struggle over society’s changing views about race and culture. The 20-month legal battle marked the first time Trump became a regular presence on newspaper front pages. It served as an early look at the hardball tactics he has employed in business and, more recently, in politics. And its resolution showed how Trump, even in the heat of battle, is often willing to strike a deal. This account is based on a review of more than 1,000 pages of court records, including hearing transcripts and affidavits that have received little attention in the decades since the case, as well as interviews with people involved in the case. www.chicagodefender.com

I could take educational trips — I studied abroad in Cuba for two weeks — and everything has been paid for.” Because of men like Dean Booker and other alumni he spends time with, Jackson says his time at Morehouse has been transformational. “Being at Morehouse will change you because it’s a school of Black men who are focused on being successful,” he says. “I was never the kind of kid to take school seriously and now, I am. I want to be one of the top performers because when you’re around people like that, you want to be one of the best.” Quinn Rallins received his bachelor’s degree from Morehouse before going on to work as a community organizer. He also received a master’s degree from the University of Oxford in the U.K. and graduated from Northeastern University with his JD in May. The guidance he received at Morehouse served as his foundation. “My adviser, Dr. Hamid Taqi, had a tremendous impact of my college experience,” he says. “He was from Sierra Leone and a brilliant thinker. critical questions about the world. I would sit in his office for hours, and talk with him about societal issues.” In addition to mental exploration, Rallins says he learned how to expand his horizons beyond his own interests. “I entered Morehouse with a bit of rugged individualism,” he says. “As I matriculated, however, I began to build community with my classmates and developed a shared sense of purpose. It taught me that, in many ways, our destiny was bound together. I’ve carried and furthered that sense of community.” A strong sense of shared success is also essential at Morehouse’s official sister school, Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is one of two HBCUs for women and has graduated notable alumni such as Yvonne Johnson, the first Black mayor of Greensboro Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? actress Maidie Norman, and Belinda J. Foster, the first Black woman district attorney in the state of North Carolina. Like other alumnae who’ve come before her, broadcast journalist Torene Harvin is a “Bennett Belle.” When she ran into financial trouble during her freshman year, Bennett
made sure that she could stay. “In my first year, I was $10,000 in debt,” Harvin says. “I was trying to call family members to help, and the business department put me on a payment plan. They said that if I kept above a 3.0, they’d give me scholarships. Every year, I kept a GPA after that and I didn’t have to worry much about it again. If you’re doing well on campus academically, they’ll make sure you stick around. They’ll look out for you.” Harvin attributes this support to the family-like atmosphere that you can only have when everyone knows your name. “Everyone knows you; you’re not just a number,” Harvin says. “It’s easier to have a personal connection with your professor, and even if I hadn’t taken a certain professor’s class, a professor in a different department would still know my name. It’s really closeknit.”

Comcast, CHA & Jackie Joyner-Kersee Give Back By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Imagine not having access to internet service when everything is contingent upon that which gives us access to everyday essentials. Comcast and six-time Olympic medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee recently announced the impact of Internet Essentials, the company’s comprehensive broadband adoption program, on the digital divide. The Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) has partnered with the company to expand the program to as many as 91,000 HUD-assisted households in Chicago. At a ceremony held on the near West Side, Comcast Senior Executive Vice President David L. Cohen, CHA CEO Eugene Jones Jr., along with other key public officials, were on hand to donate 100 laptops to CHA residents. The Chicago Defender was in attendance and had a chance to talk with East St. Louis native Joyner-Kersee on becoming the national spokesperson for this special program. “With Comcast and Internet Essentials, we’re talking about the digital divide.
If we’re not having access to the internet, we are actually falling behind. How can we bridge that gap? Just imagine, if you didn’t have your internet, what would you go through? So, people live like that every day,” she said. “For me, it’s a way to have a level playing field and give us opportunities. You can have potential but you can also have opportunities in just being able to fill out a job application.” Having established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation in 1988 — which provides youth, adults and families with assistance and various programming in her hometown — she later raised money to build The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in 2000. People remember me as Jackie Joyner before I became Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the Olympian champion and finding ways to give back.” No one understands the challenges and the obstacles more than Joyner-Kersee, who was raised to seize opportunities through athletics to go beyond her circumstances — joining her brother on track and field. Those humble beginnings had a great deal of discipline, grind and the support of her family — not always the case for many who come to her community center. She feels spreading the word of Comcast Internet Essentials is a way in providing the resources for families to afford the same services as other households. “Having internet today versus as a little girl has shown me the progression. How a generation of yesterday is still strong but stronger from the standpoint in order to continue to move forward — you have to bridge that gap — if not back then without the internet you might have thought you were keeping up but really you weren’t, because it was already in motion. The progress of what people were doing to be able to have information readily available to you.” When she’s not traveling around the country at speaking engagements, she
continues to work with her staff and youth at the center where there’s a variety of programming. From the STEM and agricultural programs to athletics, Joyner-Kersee believes it’s important to expose students and seniors to new and fresh opportunities. As she prepares for the center’s gala in October and settles back home from attending the Olympics in Brazil, Joyner-Kersee admits she was thoroughly pleased and proud of the young Olympians. “Allyson Felix is an athlete that my husband coached. I was glad to see Elaine Thompson win the double, 100 and the 200 meter from Jamaica. Usain Bolt always set it on fire and seeing our women gymnastics do extremely well,” Joyner-Kersee said. “I went to see the women’s basketball championship as well as the men’s championship. Volleyball — it was just really a great Olympics.” It’s been 20 years since Joyner-Kersee won her last Olympic medal in the long jump but her brand is still strong and companies such as Comcast recognize her influence in the community. She explains her formula to success. “I stress to each and everyone throughout my career — be consistent. I may not win all the time, but I’m always knocking at the door. The time is going to come when I knock and run through that door because of that consistency.” www.chicagodefender.com

IlliniCare Health Holds Community Back-to-School and Health Fair By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer Families gathered on the Southeast Side for free health services and back-to-school preparation with IlliniCare Health, and were joined by Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Ald. Greg Mitchell. IlliniCare Health hosted its Community Back to School and Health Fair held in conjunction with Kelly, representing Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District, and Mitchell, of the 7th Ward, at Compassion Baptist Church on Aug. 27. “For us at IlliniCare Heath, this event furthers our mission to transform the health of the community, one person at a time,” IlliniCare Health CEO Michael Marrah said. “In a fair like this, when we’re offering everything from haircuts to dental exams, we’re bringing the whole community together to improve the area’s health, and we’re not doing it alone.” This event focused on overall well-being and provided free health screenings, such as dental, vision, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol testing. Teaching attendees about preventive health measures with fitness demos and educational presentations was a top concern. “There’s always a need for basic preventive health care,” Marrah said. “Making sure you’re going to the doctor, the dentist, making sure you’re eating well. We partnered with vendors to let people know about getting fresh food even if they live in a food desert. Understanding options for mental and behavioral health resources is also important. There’s a lot of places they can go and a lot of people they can partner with to make themselves and their families healthy.” The statistics for diseases that disproportionately affect Black communities do support the need for education about preventive care. The rate at which Black men are diagnosed with diabetes increased 136 percent from 1980 to 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers for hypertension are equally troubling. Not only do Blacks develop high blood pressure earlier than other races, there are more Black women with it than men. Experts attribute much of this growth to a lack of adequate care. About 13.5 percent of Blacks are in fair or poor health compared to the total population, which has less than 10 percent of Americans classified in this health status. The CDC says that social factors such www.chicagodefender.com

Congresswoman Kelly says that this type of joint effort is needed. “The Health Fair was a collaborative effort to provide health screenings that will enable us to live healthier and longer lives,” Kelly said. “We reached out to hundreds of people with vital information about diabetes, hypertension and other diseases that disproportionately affect African-American and Hispanic communities. Through my role as chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust, I’m actively working to reduce health disparities and have made it one of my top priorities to improve health outcomes in diverse communities.” In addition to a focus on overall health, Marrah says that one of the big parts of the fair was getting kids ready for school and making back-to-school preparation easier on families. Free school supplies, backpacks and fresh produce were provided to over 500 children and families.

Alternative Treatment to Pharmaceutical Drugs for Your Child Suffering with ADHD By Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD and you’re hesitant about giving your child prescription drugs. There are about 13 million people in America alone who suffer from what is identified as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). ADHD is prevalent among African-Americans and can have devastating long-term effects. As a community, Blacks are often reluctant to accept mental health conditions as part of their DNA, coupled with their lack of trust in the medical industry. Blacks are likely to reject any form of treatment available, especially medication. Historically, there are reasons for the mistrust. The main reason is the documentation of misdiagnoses within our school systems. If your child is experiencing ADHD-related symptoms, it is critical to seek out a health care professional who

worse over time. Anxiety and depression resulting from consistent criticism and under-performance in school or work is probable Making sure your child is treated for ADHD is necessary; otherwise, these symptoms have the potential to isolate and make one feel alone, ashamed, and destined for failure. Worse, the untreated effects of these emotional symptoms, coupled with the ADHD symptoms, often leads to additional mental disorders and even criminal behaviors. If you choose the non-medication treatment for ADHD, there are several options, all of which require planning and consistency. Whether a child or an adult with ADHD, their families will have to accept and prepare for the level of commitment required for successful results. Here are some alternative, non-medication options: •Physical exercise has a calming effect lasting hours afterward because it increases the number of neurotransmitters in the brain. Consistent exercise can improve attention and lower hyperactivity and impulsivity. For instance, teachers report that children are much calmer after periods of recess. Similarly, activities that include complex movements such as martial arts, skateboarding and tennis actually challenge and train the brain to increase its ability to focus. •Mental exercise challenges the attention span to become longer. Trained professionals use these exercises in clinical and education settings to promote learning, attention and emotional health. •Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback) is a behavioral treatment that attaches sensors to the brain area and monitors the person’s brainwaves as they focus on a particular task. This process determines which methods help their brain, enabling the child or adult to control their level of focus more. Individuals experience prog-
ress having fewer ADHD symptoms and less need for medication. •Mindfulness is the practice of meditation and yoga for increasing concentration as well as the ability to self-regulate. Teachers and clinicians have applied this practice, yielding good results. Mindfulness practices start with the goal of focusing on attention, which can actually help increase an individual’s awareness, behaviors and emotions. Finally, mindfulness can help individuals with ADHD be more aware of their patterns and abilities to choose their actions, rather than be controlled by them. •Behavioral therapy is a method of treatment conducted by a licensed therapist who actually specializes in ADHD and who first assesses the non-productive habits of an individual with ADHD. The therapist then teaches the individual new skills to modify such behaviors. It also examines the behavior of parents and teachers to identify their inappropriate handling of children and adolescents with ADHD, then teaches them alternative ways to support them. •Coaching is a non-clinical method of treatment for children and adults with ADHD. Coaching is goal-driven to help individuals identify and meet goals within a target time frame. Coaching provides the client with a support system outside of their family to help them function better in terms of planning, organization, and time management. Coaches may be therapists or psychologists; however, most are not. Be sure you know their limitations regarding the emotional issues one may be experiencing with their ADHD. •Diet, nutrition, and sleep can affect the intensity of ADHD symptoms. Proper sleep is very important for those with ADHD because they struggle to maintain focus. ADHD coaches can help with your diet or refer you to a dietician who can identify foods to avoid increasing ADHD symptoms. www.chicagodefender.com

Tax Effects of Divorce By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer If you are divorcing or recently divorced, taxes may be the last thing on your mind. However, these events can have a big impact on your wallet. Alimony and a name or address change are just a few items you may need to consider. There are certain things to keep in mind.
www.chicagodefender.com
Your filing status could change. Married Filing Separately or Married Filing Jointly are no longer an option, after your divorce. Depending on your previous filing status, your new filing status options could be Single or Head of Household. Child-support payments are not deductible, and if you received child support, it is not taxable. You can deduct alimony paid to for a
spouse or former spouse under a divorce or separation decree, regardless of whether you itemize deductions. You must enter your spouse’s Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number on your Form 1040 when you file.Voluntary payments made outside a divorce or separation decree are not deductible. If you get alimony from your spouse or former spouse, it is taxable in
the year you get it. Alimony is not subject to tax withholding, so you may need to increase the tax you pay during the year to avoid a penalty. To do this, you can make estimated tax payments or increase the amount of tax withheld from your wages. If you get a final decree of divorce or separate maintenance by the end of your tax year, you can’t deduct contributions you make to your former spouse’s traditional IRA. You may be able to deduct contributions you make to your own traditional IRA. If you change your name after your divorce, be sure to notify the Social Security Administration. File Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card. You can get the form on SSA.gov or call 800772-1213 to order it. The name on your tax return must match SSA records. A name mismatch can cause problems in the processing of your return and may delay your refund. If you lose health insurance coverage because of divorce, you are still required to have coverage for every month of the year for yourself and the dependents you can claim on your tax return. You may enroll in health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace during a special enrollment period, if you lose coverage because of a
divorce. If you purchase health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you may get advance payments of the premium tax credit. If you do, you should report changes in circumstances to your Marketplace throughout the year. These changes include a change in marital status, a name change, a change of address and a change in your income or family size. Reporting these changes will help make sure that you get the proper amount of financial assistance. This will also help you avoid getting too much or too little credit in advance. You may need to amend your previous returns to include alimony received or paid that was not included on your returns. Just remember, for every tax problem there is a solution. Constant W. Clara’s House Receives an Extreme Makeover By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer One of the shining stables of West Englewood, Clara’s House and Clara’s Place received an extraordinary gift from the men and women of Lowe’s. The organization that has provided shelter to hundreds of women and children for the past 30 years received a special extreme makeover. What initially started as a paint donation request by former newscaster and Community Affairs consultant for the Chicago Police Department, Robin Robinson, gradually turned into a massive makeover project. The few cans of paint weren’t enough to give the place the facelift needed, so the home-improvement retailer took it a step further — enlisting 17 Chicagoland region store employees to take on the task. Each person willingly volunteered on their own time to help renovate both buildings that house Clara’s House and Clara’s Place. A group of female employees of Lowe’s immediately rolled their sleeves up and began work on renovating the backyard of Clara’s

the Founder and Executive Director, Clara Kirk, who never expected this kind of outpouring of generosity for the organization. “I have never had the magnitude of this level where people done this type of renovation for me. Lowe’s have been great to me to do anything on this level. They have been working at Clara’s House and Clara’s Place for about a week,” she said. Currently, Clara’s Place has 12 families in residence. Kirk says the reason is the school connected to their building and the 13th room has become an area of the children.
Ald. Ray Lopez also has his office in the building. Lowe’s employees from 17 stores in the Chicagoland region worked side by side with neighbors, community groups, Chicago Police Officers, local businesses, Ald. Lopez and other volunteers helped with the magical build-out. Clara’s House Shelter has provided for thousands of mothers and their children in the 30 years since Kirk started her mission by taking families into her own home. The Chicago Archdiocese eventually donated the rectory of a closed parish for the 56-bed shelter. Kirk has lived in the West Englewood community since 1974, eventually opening Clara’s House in 1987, later Clara’s Place in 1986. In addition, the rehabilitation
work includes extensive upgrades of several areas at both locations, including the large outdoor playyard at the Shelter and the children’s’ learning room at the Clara’s House Residence. Local artists such as Lowe’s employee Raquel Barragan created a beautiful mural on the third floor of the residence. The onslaught of volunteers from licensed electricians, carpenters, plumbers and landscapers — it was truly a labor of love for those who dedicated their time. Kirk said, “God is not through with me yet. He has opened the door for me to clear the path and I can say to Him, ‘Thank you God for what you have done and thank you Lowe’s choosing the will of God to help make a better and prettier place for my children to live.”

UNCF 33rd Annual Walk Run Fundraiser Chicago 2016 The United Negro College Fund was founded in 1944 to help African-Americans attend and graduate from college in the tradition of enslaved Blacks who understood the value of knowledge, the ability to read and write and saw it as the key to their freedom. For generations, Blacks passed this sacred information on. UNCF is the organ of the body that makes sure we accomplish that goal. Since its beginnings the organization has helped more than double the number of minorities attending college. To date $4.5 billion has been contributed to UNCF. There are 400 UNCF programs that award 10,000 plus scholarships every year. Eleven million has been awarded in scholarships to students in top five cities: New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Of the UNCF scholarship recipients there is a 70 percent graduation rate, which is 11 percent higher than the national average for all students at all four-year colleges. tion. Best known to the world by its iconic motto, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” UNCF has continued to grow and expand in an effort to achieve its vision of a nation where all Americans have equal access to higher education that prepares them for rich intellectual lives, competitive and fulfilling careers, engaged citizenship and service to our nation. The philosophy is that when you invest in kids you invest in the future, securing a world they can live in, a world of “Better Futures.” Financing college educations are not cheap. So the fundraising efforts of UNCF are often a prayer answered for youth who have done the work, earned the grades to attend college but do not have the money. The UNCF Chicago Walk for Education is a broad-based community fundraising event to support deserving students with the financial assistance needed to reach their goals of going to and through college. There are two ways you can support this worthy cause: 1) Corporations and organizations can sponsor/underwrite at one of the sponsorship levels or 2) Individuals
can recruit family members, friends and co-workers to participate in this non-competitive walk to raise much-needed funds for UNCF. Everyone who believes that a mind is a terrible thing to waste but a wonderful thing to invest in should participate, inspire and empower young people to secure their passports to opportunity – a college degree. The last day for advanced registration has passed, so if you want to participate you can register on site the day of the event Saturday. Registration is $40 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under. Church’s Landmark Status Was Set in Motion 2 Years Ago By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer Although Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church’s landmark status was approved on June 22 by Chicago’s City Council, it was the August 28 dedication ceremony that sealed the initial idea that was birthed at a chance meeting in 2014. At a breakfast in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in January 2014, explains Ward Miller, executive director for Preservation Chicago, “I had the honor of meeting Bishop Fitzpatrick and his wife, Pastor Reshorna Fitzpatrick. I had attended events at Stone Temple in the past and was aware of its amazing history, but on that morning, I asked if they would consider a Chicago landmark designation of the church building.” A former synagogue, the church was built in 1926 for Jews fleeing persecution and anti-Semitism in Romania that flourished during the careers of A.C. Cuza and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu – both considered Romanian political extremists, according to author Jean Ancel. In 1954, as Blacks pursued better housing and moved into the North Lawndale neighborhood, the congregation sold the building to Baptist worshipers led by the Rev. James Marcellus Stone. “We had known for years that the work that had been done by my grandfather, the late Rev. Stone, and his bold stance to allow Dr. Martin Luther King to preach from the pulpit of our church, was historical in nature,” says Bishop Fitzpatrick. “Getting the landmark status for Stone Temple Baptist Church has been something that my wife and I had talked about on multiple occasions.” In January 2014, the church held its first annual birthday celebration for Dr. King, which was sponsored by several organizations, including The Jewish United Fund and The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, and other supporters. “It was during this service that my wife and I met Ward Miller. Miller began talking to us about the church becoming a historical landmark,” says the bishop. Miller recalls the surprising moment, saying: “The Bishop and his wife, Reshorna, looked at me and stated in so many words ‘that they were looking into such a possibility of a landmark designation or some type of historical recognition,’ and here I am before them asking if they would consider such an honor for their church building.”
Enthusiastic about their reaction, Miller considered it a “provident” act “that we had all come together that morning.” Inspired by one of the board members of Preservation Chicago, Miller said that he was invited to King’s celebration by Charles Leeks, an urban planner who was involved in the “Greystone Initiative” for many years in the North Lawndale Community. According to Bishop Fitzpatrick, “At that point, my wife and I saw the door being opened. Miller put us in touch with several people to discuss the possibility.” The hands that moved the idea closer to reality were Matt Crawford, Department of Planning and Development; Eleanor Esser Gorski, director of Historic Preservation, Department of Planning and Development; and even Mayor Rahm Emanuel. However, there was a period of silence that lasted “over a year” before they received a call in January of this year from the Landmark Planning and Development office. “The Mayor spoke and declared that Stone Temple would be granted landmark status.” On June 22, 2016, the Mayor’s office issued a press release stating in part that “. . . designed with an eclectic mix of Romanesque and Moorish-inspired details by architect Joseph W. Cohen & Co., the brick, and limestone structure has many features of a traditional synagogue, including a horseshoe-shaped sanctuary, slender columns and tapestry brick. The landmark designation will protect all exterior elevations, the sanctuary, and entrance vestibule from significant alteration or demolition.”
Landmark Plaque Dedication
Just as his grandfather Rev. Stone and Dr. King did in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Bishop Fitzpatrick took to the podium on Sunday, August 28 — 53 years to the day that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I have a Dream Speech” — acknowledging all the hard work and efforts of those who came before him and the legacy they left behind that led to the passage of the 1968 Fair Housing Act. The plaque, which sat on a podium at the front of the sanctuary, not only symbolizes the historic significance of the building, but the renewed focus on civil rights and racial discrimination against those who continue to be disenfranchised. Says Bishop Fitzpatrick “The church continues to make use of a podium and chairs that were used by Dr. King. To God be the glory.”

$22 million was collected in Chatham’s TIF district between 2002 and 2015 — but only 15 percent has gone to improving the neighborhood Adeshina Emmanuel Defender Contributing Writer The Greater Chatham Initiative, announced this summer, promises to attract private and public dollars to once-thriving retail corridors in the neighborhood. This may sound familiar: In 2002, Chicago launched an economic development initiative in Chatham with similar goals — the 87th/Cottage Grove tax increment finance district. But of the $22 million in property tax revenue captured from Chatham landowners between 2002 and 2015 in the TIF district, only 15 percent funded developments and public improvements in Chatham, according to an analysis by City Bureau. More than $14 million (or more than 63 percent) of the money was tapped to pay city bond debt as part of a controversial school construction project that still drains the city’s resources a decade after former Mayor Richard M. Daley pushed it through City Council. Critics say it’s a misuse of the TIF fund, a program that uses a certain percentage of property tax revenue in the district to directly promote local economic development rather than distributing the dollars to city and county agencies. TIF money has helped subsidize hotels, businesses and housing, as well as parks and street improvements in so-called blighted areas. But affluent or white areas especially in the Loop and North Side have been the biggest recipients of TIF investment, drawing the ire of those who say taxpayer dollars are subsidizing private developments in prime real estate that doesn’t need a public handout. The project siphoning millions of dollars away from Chatham’s TIF district (and others nearby) is a $1.26 billion plan approved by City Council in 2006 that aimed to renovate or construct nearly 30 school sites. Dubbed the Modern Schools Across Chicago program, Chicago Public Schools paid about $692 million, while the city pledged the remainder, $576 million, for which Daley issued city bonds. In the 12 districts where the projects were located, Daley wed TIF revenue to repaying the bonds. He also tapped 18 nearby TIF districts to
help pay, which is why since 2007 the 87th/Cottage TIF in Chatham has annually transferred an average of $1.6 million to the 71st/Stony Island TIF in South Shore to pay for the construction of South Shore High School. That means Chatham residents’ tax dollars were going directly to a school outside their neighborhood, whereas, without Daley’s TIF/bond plan, the cost burden would have been shared among the entire city. An additional $7.8 million of Chatham’s TIF dollars will go to pay off bond debt by 2019, according to city projections; as of the end of last school year, South Shore High School only enrolled 582 students, nearly 400 fewer than the $60 million building was designed to hold. Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) says he wishes there were more he could do in Chatham via the TIF district, a cross-shaped stretch of 244 acres centered on South Cottage Grove from about 71st to 95th streets that was established to revitalize retail corridors and fund street improvements, among other goals. Sawyer, who took office in 2011, says “money has already been pledged that I don’t have access to. . . . I’m put in this awkward position.” He was not yet an alderman when, in 2010, City Council green-lighted the schools deal’s second phase despite gripes from aldermen that the city was misusing TIF, which at the time the Reader’s Ben Joravsky described as a “mini revolt in City Council.” The vote was 36-10. “Is it unfair? Probably,” Sawyer says about the arrangement. “But it is done. I can’t undo it.”
Helps in Community
The 87th/Cottage Grove TIF has done some good in the community. About $2.65 million, or 15 percent of TIF revenue, was spent on developments and public improvements, including the renovation of Whitney Young Library. Since 2008, the TIF has given out $788,637 in small-business improvement loans. TIFs in Black or high-poverty neighborhoods have a critical flaw: the districts typically draw in less revenue than districts in white and affluent neighborhoods where property values accumulate faster, according to activist Tom Tresser. When the city dips into such TIFs and moves money out of the community for something like Modern Schools, Tresser says that’s just adding insult to injury. “I guess you can say the poorer communities are losing twice,” he says. A Mother’s Cry: Nykea Aldridge Family Speaks Out By: Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Located in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, on King Drive South of 63rd St. is the Parkway Garden apartment complex. Many Parkway Garden tenants are decent, working-class families who reside there because the rent fits into their affordable-housing budget. The choices can be slim in a city that is steadily climbing in taxes, and low-income families are being pushed farther toward the suburbs. But it can also place many in harm’s way of the gang activity — terrorizing innocent tenants who feel trapped inside their apartments in order to avoid danger. On Aug. 26, a hot Friday afternoon, Nykea Aldridge, a mother of four, was leaving Dulles Elementary school where she finished registering three kids — Summer, 12, Sincere, 10, and Shavae, 9 — for the new school season. As she pushed her infant daughter knowing the walk to their apartment building would be short, Nykea had no idea this would be her final time pushing her baby girl in her stroller. Several bullets caught her in the middle of being the untended target. The young woman fought for her life as she lay on the hot pavement with her newborn unharmed in her stroller. The 32-year old mom who loved fashion had recently located to the neighborhood. As CPD arrived on the scene, word traveled fast that the victim was the relative of Chicago native and NBA player Dwyane Wade. Immediately, the priority level of attention was set to high alert. The numbness that had begun to settle for Chicago residents was suddenly a sharp pain that ignited fire through our veins. Wade tweeted his anger for his first cousin’s murder with an ending hashtag — EnoughisEnough. Yes, enough is enough was hundreds of homicides ago. The same thoughts that put the Wade family in the spotlight as his mom, Pastor Jolinda Wade, consoled her older sister, Diane Aldridge, Nykea’s mother — the pair stood in front of news cameras explaining their loss. The message that rang throughout the prayer vigil was the power of forgiveness. Her family and friends were dressed in Aldridge’s favorite color: purple. Diane Aldridge stood at the podium and www.chicagodefender.com
Diane Aldridge, mother of Nykea Aldridge, bows her head as her sister Jolinda Wade leads a prayer.
“As CPD arrived on the scene, word traveled fast that the victim was the relative of Chicago native and NBA player Dwyane Wade.” declared to the public that she forgave the killers of her daughter. Two days after Nykea’s death, Darwin Sorrells Jr., 26, and Darren Sorrells, 22, were charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder. Both were documented gang members and on parole for gun convictions.
Fathers Step Up Pastor Wade concurred with her sister’s decision. “That’s a decision we chose to give — we don’t mean to be bitter. We don’t choose to be angry. We’re that way, we’re children of God and the word says, we’re supposed to forgive. We want to be obedient to that,” she said. “Plus, that wasn’t Nykea, she’ll flip you off and forgive you and we’re back together like that. That’s the spirit that comes from her mom.”
The children’s fathers have stepped up in support and she is confident that she will not be alone in raising her grandchildren. Pastor Wade adds, “The father of the children, they are Black men that stood up and came in. Nykea made sure that the children had a relationship with their fathers,” she said. “We all come in as a village. We know she’s going to have all the help moving forward. Nykea knew the kind of family that we are, so we’re knit together when we have to.” Diane Aldridge doesn’t want Nykea’s life forgotten and she said she is dedicated to making sure that her children will know how she tried to make a better life for them. The sudden loss of their mom has especially been hard on the oldest children. “She loved her kids. Nykea was an awesome
Nykea Aldridge mom — trying to move ahead. She was just trying to make a better life for her and the kids — to make sure that they got out of situations that she confronted.” As one of the leading faith leaders in Chicago’s African-American community, Pastor Wade understood when she delivered the eu-
logy at her niece’s homegoing services — it had to resonate beyond Nykea’s gravesite. “When you come to the table, let’s come together. Everyone is coming but they’re coming from different paths. No, let’s bring it together. We have things we can instill in our young people.”

meal. This year, since early July, my sister has made a regular practice of sending pictures by email to chronicle her first foray into tomato growing, a single potted plant on her Evanston balcony. I’ve enjoyed witnessing dozens of tiny blossoms growing into luscious ruby fruit with these updates, but it didn’t take long for both of us to appreciate a deeper meaning rooted under our devotion to this plant. We both shared girlhood memories of what our dad annually referred to as his George-Washington Carver tomato crop in family backyard gardens. Based on Dr. Carver’s top 10

points for promoting tomatoes, he enjoyed them as much as I do. Carver’s points include: *They can be prepared in so many delicious ways that one can eat them every day in the week and not get tired of them. *The old vines contain splendid dye-stuffs, which could be used as a by-product for dying fabric of various kinds. *With a little intelligent effort, fresh tomatoes can be produced in this locality almost the year round. Year round? Not on an Evanston balcony. But that’s a good thing, thanks to our mom, who long-ago perfected this recipe far north of Carver’s 10-month season. Heat oil in a large cast iron skillet. Place flour, cornmeal and milk in 3 shallow containers. Season flour with Creole seasoning. Dredge tomatoes in the seasoned flour; set aside on wax paper 1 minute. Dip floured tomatoes in milk; dip in cornmeal; Add to oil. Cook, turning once until browned on each side, about 2 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
5 medium to large green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices 1 1/4 cup flour 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 to 3 tablespoons Creole seasoning blend 1/2 cup peanut oil, or more as needed Spicy Yogurt Sauce, recipe follows Repeat with remaining slices. Serve with Spicy Yogurt Sauce. Makes about 5 servings. For Spicy Yogurt: stir 1 teaspoon, or more to taste, of Asian chili sauce, such as Sambal Oelek into 1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt. combine 1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt with 1 teaspoon or more Asian chili sauce, such as Sambal Oelek.
