George Curtis, 18, Melachi Shaifer, 18, Allen Morris, 18 spend quality time at Dream Center. (Photos by Arionne Nettles) By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer On any given day, you can find the Bronzeville Dream Center filled with young Black people: those who have homes and those who don’t, those who love to talk and those who can’t find their voices, those who are finding their way through high school and those who have just fallen right into early adulthood. They are a mix of young men and women from all different walks of life and who are living through their individual sets of issues, but here, they are all at home. Found in the heart of a city that’s blasted in the news for crime and gang activity on a daily basis, and where safe spaces like after-school programs and community centers sometimes only want “the good kids,” this particular center has something special. The winning formula, it seems, for reaching the kids that so many have written off as unreachable lies on a block in the middle of Bronzeville. Beyonca Johnson and Holly Medley hear the statistics that are about Black youth, too: the lower graduation rate of 69 percent compared to 86 percent of whites, the higher unemployment rate that’s more than double that of whites in the same age ranges, and the fact that Blacks constitute over a third of all gang documented members. Still, those numbers mean nothing to the duo who created the Bronzeville Dream Center. “We can go into any neighborhood — I don’t care where or what type of kids they are — and we can stop our cars, start

Before opening the center, Johnson and Medley ran a program for the Chicago Park District geared toward young men ages 12 to 21. Their job, Johnson says, was to keep them occupied from 5 to 10 p.m. when they would likely get into trouble. They built a curriculum that surrounded life skills, cooking, basketball, weight training and yoga, noticing early on that the job they’d signed on to was a tough one. “When we first started, we got a lot of the kids that nobody wanted to deal with — the troublemakers, those affiliated with gangs, the ones that were kind of rude and disrespectful,” Johnson says. The program worked with 75 to 100 young men, and she noticed immediately that many of the young men lacked a caring support system. “You could tell [the staff] didn’t really want them there,” Johnson says. “The staff would treat them really rudely and it did something to my soul. That’s why they acted that way.” Johnson and Medley were committed to their cause, though, and after building relationships with each program participant, they noticed immediate changes in their behavior. “After they started our program, they would change just like that,” Johnson says. “I saw the immediate change in them by what we were doing just for those two days out of the week.” Then, as the participants started to get continued on page 7

Prison Lawsuit Alleges Deprivation, Physical and Sex Abuse By Ken Hare Defender Staff Writer “Mainstream media seem more interested in covering crime committed by Black people rather than what happens to them afterward,”says attorney Alan Mills of the Uptown People’s Law Center, the lead attorney representing incarcerated plaintiffs in a class-action suit against the Illinois Department of Corrections. Attorney Mills’ response was candid and straight to the point when asked: “Why hasn’t the public heard much about this disturbing lawsuit?” The suit in question was filed March 19, 2015. In the class-action suit brought on behalf of Demetrius Ross and “others similarly situated,” plaintiffs allege that in late April 2014, that members of the “Orange Crush” – defendants and security personnel – conducted a “shakedown of cells at Illinois River Correctional Center.” Further, “the defendants, for the sole purpose of humiliation, and needless pain abused Ross by

beating him and sexually abusing him and hundreds of other prisoners.” “For example,” as the lawsuit goes into the narrative of alleged abuse “Mr. Ross and other prisoners were subject to a humiliating strip search in front of female officers and orders to prisoners to touch their genitals and then use the same hand to open their mouths; painfully tight handcuffing with their palms outward; orders to march from their housing units to the gym at the facility with their heads on the backs of the prisoner ahead of them in line so that one man’s genitals were in direct contact with the next man’s buttocks – referred to by the Orange Crush team as “Nuts to Butts.” In addition: “violent attacks by Defendant Orange Crush when prisoners broke that formation, and orders to stand in a stress position for several hours. Throughout the entire shakedown, Defendant Orange Crush Officers hurled epithets at the prisoners, chanted ‘punish the inmate’ and told them that this was punishment for their sins,” according to the suit. However, attorney Mills said

“The men forced to sit in the heat chained together, urinated and defecated on themselves and each other.” — Complaint from an inmate these shakedowns were common occurrences within IDOC, and the suit levies accusations against similar circumstances happening at Menard, Big Muddy River and Lawrence Correctional Centers. The lawsuit names Gregg Gossett, Zach Roeckman and Stephen Duncan as the wardens at the three prisons, respectively, that supervised the shakedowns under color of law and within the scope of their employment at IDOC. Lending credence to the suit are other complaints brought to the attention of the Chicago Defender by attorney Demitrus Evans, of TEIL Firms LLC, and the Evans T:10” which have Exoneration Project,

received 30 letters from prisoners at Statesville asserting similar circumstances in January and July 2016 regarding shakedowns by Orange Crush. Although not part of the aforementioned suit, one four-page letter in particular, written by Inmate X, who desires to remain anonymous details the horrific treatment at the hands of this unit. Allegedly, on July 5, 2016, an altercation occurred between a documented mentally ill prisoner, Donald Haywood, and a Statesville correctional officer. Several days later, on July 11, around 7:45 a.m., unit E where Haywood was housed had its water shut off, the letter states. By 11:45 a.m., Orange Crush had entered gallery 3, where Inmate X was located, and strip searched him and others on his floor, handcuffed them with thumbs up behind their backs and marched them heads down to a very hot dining room with all the windows closed and no fan or air conditioning. After being seated in the dining room “Stateville tactical officer ‘Medin’ told us all that his

superiors had ordered that no one will be allowed to use the restroom and are to remain cuffed to the back of the seats for the duration of the shakedown,” says Inmate X. Several hours later, inmate X says he was in pain from the handcuffs and was forced to urinate on himself while other inmates passed out from the heat. Says attorney Evans: “As a result of the heat and lack of access to the restroom, inmates suffered dehydration, which led to medical complications,” and “the men forced to sit in the heat chained together, urinated and defecated on themselves and each other.” Attorney Evans said that she spoke to a recently released Stateville inmate. “He indicated that the Orange Crush tactical team is not new to the prison. He said that the system is always the same and that although they do things that are out of order, the administration looks the other way. Because when there is a problem like a riot they must call Orange Crush. He indicated that because of this, they need to be regulated, possibly to have body cameras.”

Retain Timothy Evans as Chief Judge As former presidents of the Cook County Bar Association, we wish to inform the public of an extraordinary individual serving them who deserves another term in office. We refer to the Honorable Timothy C. Evans, Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County. By September 15, the full circuit judges of the Circuit Court must choose their chief for the next three years. We respectfully recommend renewing Judge Evans’ tenure in that office. There are many reasons for our recommendation. Here, we focus on three. Judge Evans has significantly increased the quality of associate (non-full circuit) judges, and opened the process by which they are selected. Not long before his arrival in this office, associate judges would simply be announced, as if by a secret writ. Indeed, each one of us knows from personal experience of judges who were selected purposely on the basis of political clout, and not for their professional and personal quality. Under Judge Evans, it is the vacancies that are announced, not the new appointees. His doing so initiates literally hundreds — sometimes as many as 300 — candidacies for the vacant judgeships. Those candidates present their credentials and undergo appropriate vetting of their merit for selection. Competition has brought out the better candidates. We have led one of the bar groups that review fitness for judicial office and we attest to the steady improvement, on average, of candidates for associate judge vacancies. Through this process, the options for each vacancy are reduced to two. Each full circuit judge then votes for one of the two, and the winners of that polling become associate circuit judges. Obviously, this approach could not depart from the clout list era more significantly. Its result, in our view, is a far more qualified group of associate judges than in any prior period of our respective practices. Second, in innumerable ways, Judge Evans has brought the Circuit Court into the 21st century. He has, for instance, welcomed LGBTQ judges to the bench and encouraged their forming a group to advocate for their needs. This, while seeking grant funding from sources large and small to enable the court to assist litigants without sufficient resources or knowledge for a court battle. These steps have helped youth in the system, victims of domestic violence, domestic violence offenders, those without language skills, non-custodial parents, individuals with special needs due to their mental health, adults on probation, probation officers, and others. Most significantly, among all these initiatives, Judge Evans has worked collaboratively with other elements of the criminal justice system and the aca-

demic legal community to introduce the “Public Safety Assessment” model of determining an individual’s risk of pretrial misconduct. This scoring method at Central Bond Court provides judges and advocates with an independent and objective estimate of a particular person’s risk of new criminal activity and risk of not appearing in court. In these times of apparently random violence claiming innocent lives on our streets with all too great frequency, the PSA risk assessment includes a violence flag to indicate the likelihood of a defendant committing a violent offense if released. This system has helped to reduce dramatically the overnight population at Cook County Jail. That means it has saved scarce taxpayer dollars and eased the Jail’s ability to address other issues related to overcrowding. Equally important, the PSA approach keeps more families together for a longer period of time, without loss of public safety. Judge Evans has found a social science basis to enable the presumption of innocence to give greater cohesion to families and communities while actually reducing public expenditures overall. This remarkable achievement alone would warrant

another term as chief. These three achievements — associate judge selection, opening the court itself to its community and significantly improving the bonding process through predictive analytics, barely begin to describe the improvements at the Circuit Court under Judge Evans. The Cook County Bar Association, which each of us has been privileged to lead, has a 20page list of Judge Evans’ achievements at its website www.cookcountybar.org for your review. It is true that each of us counts Judge Evans as a friend. We make this public declaration, however, based on much more than mere friendship. Our decades of searching after justice in Cook County have taught us that search can be quite challenging. But each of us can say that Judge Evans has done more to smooth our path and, thus, that of the average litigant seeking adjudication of their claims, than we have seen before his taking office. Because of this record, and our expectation of another three years of such leadership, we endorse Judge Evans for another term as Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County and urge his

selection by the full circuit judges. Very truly yours, Larry R. Rogers, Sr. Justice John O. Steele, Retired Geraldine Simmons Anne L. Fredd Lawrence Hill James D. Kass Misfires when Writing About Urban Violence

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor

“Murder numbers don't tell the story in Chicago. Shootings do,” was the headline for Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass last Thursday. And though there may be truth in that statement, there is so much more to the truth he alludes to than what he went on to say. Kass is known for his no-holdsbarred attitude. He often provokes readers to action, sometimes hedging too close to the edge, teetering on what can easily be construed as racist. His recent column did not disappoint. Blacks took to Facebook front and center voicing their dissatisfaction with and offense taken, while the more politically astute — who had much to lose in speaking their truth — stepped to a sidebar conversation on the back end of Facebook to participate in dialogue via the message feature. Black folks were riled up and ready to rumble. Before I continue, let me share this: When I read an editorial or social commentary I always ask, to whom is the writer speaking? And what is it that he wishes to convey? What exactly does he want to leave us to ponder? And finally, what exactly is the writer’s intent? So Kass begins with the following: “Chicago hit 500 homicides the other day, with more killings this year than in New York and Los Angeles combined . . .” Even the BBC dropped in to

tell the tale of Chicago violence, of “nihilistic feral boys, brandishing their guns in cars, waving their death sticks in rap videos, young African-American men who believe they have no future, waiting to die.” So far, so good. Go Kass, speak the truth to the people. He continues: “If you want a number that really speaks to the violence in Chicago, then don't look to murders, look at shootings. “And by shootings I don't mean thugs shooting off guns in the air. I mean shootings where bullets pierce human skin, destroying flesh, bones. . . . Shootings are really attempted murders.” We can all agree with that. We know as a community the painful truth of his words. We have said it ourselves. We have lost the babies to the violence and to those who perpetuate the violence. “The shootings tell the story, like the one caught on video from the Southwest Side the other day, in the Marquette Park neighborhood, near 71st and California. . . . It was there that a 71-year-old man was shot while watering his lawn. . . . Lawns are a marker, they speak of pride. “Some lawns are left to go dormant, to dry up and fill with weeds, with beer bottles and paper scraps and what the dogs leave. That's a marker of a different kind. “But a homeowner with a neat lawn is telling his neighbors something. He's telling them that he cares about his property, his block, his neighborhood.” No argument there. Many of us grew up in communities where we observed the adults tending to the property and we grew up assisting them. We cut the hedges, mowed the lawn, pruned the flowers, swept the sidewalks, all in the vein of pride and self-respect. Kass continues, “And so that old man was watering his lawn, when teenagers on bicycles rode past on the sidewalk. One turned

“We have lost the babies to the violence and to those who perpetuate the violence.” back and, according to police, demanded the man's wallet. When he refused, the kid reached into his waistband, pulled out a gun and shot the old guy. “The shooter reached down, rifled through the man's pockets, took the wallet and rode away.”

Low Value on Life The question is, who does that? We are so removed from such thinking that we can’t begin to fathom that reality, and yet it occurs. Last week, a friend came by to scoop me up and head to the African Arts Festival. I was running a tad bit late. Once in the car my friend says to me, “Kai you do know that people don’t sit in cars anymore, because they shoot people." Harsh? Maybe, maybe not. However, it’s true, so we get it when Kass quotes another Black man who says: "It's just a gamble that they get a few dollars; your life isn't worth more than a few dollars to them." "The most you looking at getting is 10, 20 dollars, something like that, and you don't value a human life more than that?" We get that. We know that children killing children makes no sense, and children killing elders is equally unacceptable. The statement penetrates our soul, piercing our sanity, and yet we appear to have surrendered to this new unruly, wild untamed world where life is not valued on either side. Our youth don’t value their lives, so why value yours? And the police on a whole have demonstrated their lack of value or respect for a Black man’s (person’s) life. And then Kass went left, lost his mind and wrote: “The shooters, these feral young men, aren't an accident. They are the direct product of the Democratic welfare state that helped

The Chicago Defender Platform Since 1905: 1. Prejudice and racism in all of its forms must be eliminated and destroyed. 2. R acial profiling and police brutality must be removed from police practices. 3. R eparations, or remediation, must be the final chapter in the arduous ordeal of slavery and legal segregation. 4. O pportunities for inclusion and advancement in all unions must be unrestricted.

5. Full access to government contracts for all. 6. Representation in all police and fire departments must reflect the community they serve. 7. Increase access and availability for quality, affordable housing for all. 8. Establish a living and fair wage as a fundamental right for all Americans. (Revised January 1966, May 2001)

destroy families. The government became the father, the fathers became irrelevant or were driven off, and Black families that had withstood decades of Jim Crow segregation began to collapse. “And that was generations ago.” There’s no disagreement with the impact of welfare on the Black family and the generations of women-heads-of-household families that has led us here, to this very moment in time. We get that because we all feel the effect it has had and continues to have. We know that our sons are running out of control with nowhere to go, nowhere to be somebody. We know this. Tell us something new. But who are you talking to Kass? Certainly not us.

Where He Went Wrong What we as a people, The Race, has issue with is that reference to “feral.” Really? Kass, what indeed did you intend to convey exactly? The dictionary defines feral1, an adjective: 1. existing in a natural state, as animals or plants; not domesticated or cultivated; wild. 2. having reverted to the wild state, as from domestication: a pack of feral dogs roaming the woods. 3. of or characteristic of wild animals; ferocious; brutal. feral2 adjective 1. causing death; fatal. 2. funereal; gloomy. Somehow, white folks inevitably manage to get to that connection — associating Blacks with being less than human. And there’s no way around. It’s disrespectful and we don’t like it. We don’t and we won’t accept it. He goes on to say, “Now, there aren't enough jobs

for unskilled labor. There aren't enough cops. City Hall's disastrous handling of the Laquan McDonald case left police unwilling to engage, as they fear appearing in videos.” And what of our sons who fear what police do off camera? We don’t care about police not wanting to be on video. If they conduct themselves professionally and go by the book, follow the law as written, they should have no problem being filmed. Instead, they take the law in their hands as they have always done, disconnect the camera so that they can continue to kill Blacks off the record and tell their version of what happened. What Kass says next in conclusion reveals his purpose, “Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has asked for tougher laws to keep shooters behind bars. But Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and her allies in the Black Caucus in Springfield keep dragging their feet. “There is an obvious disconnect between the needs of the poor in violent neighborhoods and the agenda of the elite African-American political class. “The politicians will make fine speeches. And more will be shot. And the numbers of the dead in Chicago grow.” How dare he? Superintendent Johnson’s solution is nothing more than a quick fix. Our issues will take a more comprehensive plan. What is not communicated clearly is the failed communities lacking on all fronts that make for success. Without opportunities in the areas of education, employment, career, finance and commerce, Blacks will continue to suffer the ugly impact of poverty, which sadly is coupled with a failed family dynamic fosters crime, drugs and violence.

comfortable, the Park District cut the program. “I said, ‘What happens now?’ You can’t just stop a program and just leave them sitting there,” Johnson says. “They’re going to go back to the streets.” Johnson and Medley knew where the young men in their program would turn when they no longer had a place of refuge because they always took the time out to ask. “When we would teach life skills, I’d like to give them a voice: Why do you guys do this, why do you hang out, why do you join gangs? They don’t have anywhere to go and every time they go somewhere, people would kick them out,” Johnson says. A table made from wood and painted by Allen Morris and Holly Medley. (Photo by Arionne Nettles)

Nowhere Else to Go

Johnson knew that the boys simply would have nowhere else to go. So, she started her own secret project. “Holly didn’t know; it was a surprise to her,” Johnson says. “I’m a dreamer, and I just had a vision. I saw the basketball court and I basically saw the office in my mind, so I just started building, and building, and building. Then, I brought Holly in and she started crying.” Holly wasn’t the only one in love with the space. Decked out with bright colors, the Bronzeville Dream Center is filled with images of sports favorites like Michael Jordan and Dwyane Wade that span the inner walls to the windows. Its intentional design attracts youth from all around the area, who may be passing by and decide to stop in. Like 18-year-old George Curtis says, “People will just come in sometimes.” Curtis, a student at Wendell Phillips Academy High School, is a dancer who practices and throws shows at the center. He sees his progression in his dance ability from working with Medley and with his friends. “You have adults here that can help you, but even your peers here will help you,” he says. Medley helps participants like Curtis work on whatever activities they’re passionate about, but her accolades come from the sports arena. By trade, Medley is a professional sports performance and basketball development coach. She played for DePaul University while in college and now trains professional and overseas players. She offers that same training to the youth in the center as a part of the Hollywood Dreamers program. “The guys know how amazing she is when it comes to basketball training, so they want to act right because if they do, she’ll train them,” Johnson says. “They can get the same $250 per hour training for free. It’s amazing what these kids would do just to get trained in basketball.” The pull of getting professional training then leads to incremental learning in other ways. “That’s why we made it this

www.chicagodefender.com

way,” Johnson says. “That gets them in and once they get into the door, we’ve got them. It’s more than just basketball.” Medley just does it for the love of the game and for the love of the kids, many of whom have affectionately started to call her and Johnson “mom.” “I like to see them advance; I see them progressing,” Medley says.

A Place of Refuge

In 2015, the Bronzeville Dream Center officially opened its doors, becoming a place of refuge for atrisk youth using the same curriculum that had been a success in their Park District program. Allen Morris, an 18-year-old student who will be heading to Sierra Linda High School in Arizona this fall, says he’s been at the Bronzeville Dream Center since its inception. “I’ve been here since it first started. I even helped build from the ground up. Those tables, for instance,” he says, pointing to a set of

hand-painted coffee tables. “That’s important to me because me and Holly spent all day painting them and putting the words on them. I’m not even an artist.” The tables that are in one of the center’s recreational spaces show a winding road to goals and dreams and the roadblocks that often get in the way such as distractions, doubts and fears. “That’s the thing, he wasn’t an artist, nor did he care to paint,” Medley adds. “But I told him that I needed to get these tables done and we did it. We got wood, sanded it down, and drew on it.” With all of the activity that goes on at the center, Johnson and Medley work hard at getting their participants to change how they view their lives and their potential. The key, Johnson says, is getting them to dream. “Everyone gets an individualized development plan,” she says. “That’s when I sit down and ask them a list of questions like what are your fears, what are your doubts,

what are your dreams, what are your goals, who do you love? And I get a solid understanding of who they are.” Understanding who each participant is and what he or she needs for motivation is what sets this approach apart from standard community centers. “It’s all about setting goals because if you have none, and you get up every day, then you’re just existing, and how do you succeed? Then, you’re just on a path to nowhere,” she says. Listening to their needs, Johnson and Medley have expanded their curriculum to include areas of experimental learning that directly affect their youth. An example is the set of entrepreneurship courses taught by Johnson. Johnson, who currently has her own credit restoration and real estate businesses, has been an entrepreneur since she was 16 and uses her business failures and success as lessons she can teach her participants. “They’d say, ‘Well, we’re broke; we need some money.’ So, we implemented an entrepreneurship program and taught them how to incorporate a business, how to get products wholesale, and how to put product on a website. We teach them how to make money.” Participants also learn the professional development skills that they need as a foundation for business and career. This summer, the Bronzeville Dream Center had 25 paid interns who received a season-long training in how to work in the business world. “I told them, ‘You’re going to be working on yourself this summer: learning how to type, how to speak with people, and how to write a real resume,’ ” Johnson says. Unlike short programs that give a crash course in basic skills, the interns at the center had time to practice.

“You can’t learn how to interview in a day, so we role-played and they worked on themselves so much that parents were calling, saying how much their children changed,” Johnson says. “That touched my soul, and I knew that we were doing the right thing.” Out of that group, 10 have left for college. So far, all of the Bronzeville Dream Center’s success has been created without any governmental or local business support. With no association to any larger entities, all funding has primarily been straight from its founders’ pockets. Now, the Bronzeville Dream Center is in financial distress as its founders seek a way to get out of debt. The center was six months behind in its rent when Johnson shared an emotional message on Facebook, thinking that the center would have to close and her “kids” would again be displaced. That message went viral and because of recent supporters, the center is halfway toward its fundraising goal of $50,000, which would give it the funding it needs to pay off debts and implement more structure to prevent future financial hardships. Going forward, Johnson and Medley plan to take the Bronzeville Dream Center to a new level. In the near future, they will build up the center’s advisory board; employ the assistance of a fiscal manager, attorneys, and a fundraising and grant writer; grab new volunteers, and create a youth advisory board to hire even more young men and women to work and earn a paycheck as they help their younger peers. “It’s a good energy,” Johnson says about the place that her, Medley, and all of their participants can call home. “It’s a good love.” To donate to the Bronzeville Dream Center, visit www.gofundme. com/dreamcentersupport or call 312-509-1822.

What African-Americans Have to Gain With Hillary Clinton as President By Julianne Malveaux Defender Contributing Writer Donald Trump is fond of asking, often belligerently and in front of predominantly white audiences, what African-Americans have to lose by voting for him. He presents a vision of dystopia, where African-Americans are all poor, unemployed crime victims and he suggests he can change the game because Democrats have caused all this mess. Really? A more interesting way to look at the contest between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is to ask what African-Americans have to gain by voting for Clinton. I think the gains are massive. We gain a candidate who “gets race” better than most white people do. That doesn’t mean that she gets it perfectly, but it means that she is race-sensitive. Her race sensitivity will mean that, with the right agitation, she will be able to advocate for race-advancing policies. She has engaged in productive conversations with the Black Lives Matter movement. She has acknowledged the legitimacy of “reparations,” a concept most mainstream Democrats would have eschewed two decades ago, when Bill Clinton was President. She seems more open to legislative solutions for racial wealth and income inequality than others have been. There is something to be said for being enthusiastic about a candidate who really “gets race.” Hillary Clinton will repair the Voting Rights Act by fighting to restore those sections the Supreme Court struck in the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder case. According to her website, she is also committed to setting a national standard for early voting, and to restoring voting rights to those ex-offenders who should not be precluded from voting because of their prior crimes. Hillary Clinton’s website indicates that she is committed to reform in the criminal justice system, and to undo some of the damage done from the Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. She gets lots of negative press from that legislation, but she was the first lady at the time, not the president, and she had no vote. Furthermore, the 1994 legislation must be contextualized.

“When we vote for Clinton, we gain an advocate for working families.” People were so panicked about rising levels of crime then that the majority of Democrats and the majority of the Congressional Black Caucus voted for some of the draconian measures that triggered mass incarceration. Now, she is committed to reversing the trend, and she ought to have that chance. The contrast – a “law and order” candidate who is reading from the Rudy Guiliani “stop and frisk” playbook. When we vote for Hillary Clinton we gain an advocate for working families. She is committed to raising the minimum wage, and has always been. She has been on record in rejecting the current federal $7.25 wage as insufficient, and has been on board (with some pushing for the Bernie Sanders team) for the Fight for 15. According to Fortune Magazine, just more than half of all African American workers earn less than $15 an hour. These folks are beneficiaries of Hillary Clinton’s support to raise the minimum wage. Hillary Clinton has been an advocate for economically marginalized people, women and children all of her adult life, and she will

08 September 14 - 20, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

continue in that role as our president. Her early work with the Children’s Defense Fund is commendable. Her 1995 statement at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, that “women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights” is a paradigm shift from the way women’s rights have too often been sidelined in international discussions. She did not waver from her support for women’s rights during her tenure as secretary of state. African-American women are special beneficiaries when women’s issues are embraced.

Education advocate Hillary Clinton is an education advocate. She wants to make preschool universal for every 4-year-old in our country. She also wants to ensure that working families have affordable child care – paying no more than 10 percent of their income for child care. She also wants to make sure that child care workers are adequately paid, and would support women continuing their education with child care scholarships, and would expand campus child care programs. Many

of these programs are efforts she supported while she was in the U.S. Senate. As President, she can push these programs with more force. Secretary Clinton has also pledged to increase K-12 opportunities, to close the achievement gap, to make college tuition more affordable, and to support HBCUs. Her choice for secretary of education will be important, and African American Clinton supporters need to ensure that her choice is not as tone-deaf on African-American issues as President Barack Obama’s pick. I would be disingenuous if I did not acknowledge the imperfections in the Clinton candidacy. The trust issue is a big issue and the drip drip drip of the emails have a corrosive impact on her image. But if you read past headlines, you’ll read that she has acknowledged mistakes around the emails, apologized, and said she wouldn’t do it again. Too many have vetted the Clinton Foundation and found no conflicts (and indeed a stellar rating from Charity Watch) in their work. The optics make many uneasy, especially when the media has a harsher

approach toward Clinton than toward Trump, whose own Foundation ought to be better vetted, and whose failure to provide tax returns (or reasonable medical records) is an outrageous disregard for the American people. We have everything to lose with Donald Trump, and we have an opportunity to gain so much with Hillary Clinton. I can’t guarantee that Hillary Clinton will implement all the things I think she should. Unless she has a friendly legislature, she will have to fight with Republicans, just as President Obama did. (She has a track record, from her Senate time, of playing the bipartisan game well. Paul Ryan, are you going to help a sister out?) That’s motivation to vote down ticket, to ensure that she gets the Senators and Congressional representatives that will help her with her agenda. Further, the base that is mobilized to vote must also be mobilized to agitate. The lesson of the Obama presidency is that you won’t get fed in your mama’s house unless you bring your plate to the table. Just as the LGBTQ community pushed President Obama on their demands, so must the African-American community push Secretary Clinton on ours. We can’t simply assume that she “gets it” even though we know she “gets it.” She is strengthened when her constituency makes focused demands about her action. Politics is not a sport to engage in every four years or even every two. African-Americans who want social and economic justice and systemic change must be fully engaged in the transformation of our political system by confronting politicians and demanding their action. From this perspective, Hillary Clinton represents an opportunity for our engagement. She is a racially and culturally sensitive leader who will be an advocate for economically marginalized people, women, and children, and education advocate. She will do as much as we push her to do. She offers an opportunity that no other candidate does. ENTERTAINMENT

Words of Wisdom: The Women of Bad Boy Entertainment By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor It takes a strong man to recognize the assets of skills that a woman brings to the table for their business. For decades, the music business has presented a male-dominated industry. But gradually over the last three decades, we’ve witnessed a shift with more women in executive positions, heading up label divisions and transitioning in “shot-caller” roles. The women of Bad Boy Entertainment, Faith Evans, the members of Total: Pamela Long, Kima Raynor, Keisha Epps and choreographer Laurieann Gibson are a part of this legacy of strong women contributing to the success of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mega-empire. They treated a room full of rising and established female executives with their words of wisdom and shared stories of challenges and triumphs during their Chicago concert stop at the Velvet Lounge. ORS Olive Oil partnered with LA’s Brand Maverick Entertainment and Chicago-based marketing company Ariel the Mogul to present the No Stereotypes speaker series during the Bad Boy Reunion Tour to host an up-close and personal panel discussion and brunch. Over the last two decades, Laurieann Gibson has been responsible for some of the famous dance routines reflected in the Uptown Records videos and lending her signature style to Bad Boy’s artistry. When asked what would she tell her younger self now what she needed to know when first starting out in the entertainment business, she said, “That’s a huge question for me — to buckle up! I was originally born in Toronto. I left Alvin Ailey and went to a Heavy D. audition wearing a bun and I remember when I met Puff Daddy for the first time. He was at Uptown Records and he gave me his business card. The young label executive explained to her that he was the A&R Director. Gibson asked what an A&R Director was? She laughs, “He left Uptown Records and formed Bad Boy Entertainment.” She points to Faith: “Remember when we first met? You were wearing this motorcycle outfit — it was so dope and I was from Canada and I felt so corny.” Gibson jokingly adds, “Faith always protected me and she still does because of the boys. I would tell my younger self, ‘To believe in myself. I went on this journey where I had this gift and over time I would learn how to operate. I didn’t understand it when I was younger. Faith understood the power of my gift. The manipulation when you see a gifted person come into this industry is to instantly strip it of its power, to deny it of its effect.” R&B singer and songwriter Faith Evans has been through her growing pains in the music business. Considered the “first lady” of Bad Boy and the wife of slain Hip Hop icon Notorious B.I.G., the two met at the label. They married, had a son together, www.chicagodefender.com

“Knowing my worth, I don’t put that in terms of a number or record chart.” Faith Evans later separating as both careers continued to grow. Twenty years later, she reflects on her growth in the business. “Knowing my worth, I don’t put that in terms of a number or record chart. I’ve always known I’ve had a gift from God that music would be a huge part of my life. I think earlier on, I knew my worth but I was afraid to demand it or exercise my rights to demand my worth,” said Evans.

ORS Olive Oil Brand team with the women of Bad Boy Entertainmemt. “I know with my first contractual situation, although I had a good attorney, I didn’t want to know every faucet of what was in that deal. Now, everything is important. I want to know everything. There’s a lot of little loopholes. Overall, over time I’ve grown more as a business person, and obviously I would’ve done things differently,” she said. Total’s founding member Keisha Epps talks about how she met her two bandmates, Kima Raynor and Pamela Long, growing up in Newark, New Jersey. They ended up meeting the mother of Puff’s Godson, who had them going to Mt. Vernon to sing for other popular artists like DJ Biz Markie and Heavy D.

They eventually ended up singing for Combs, and after hearing the group, he was impressed and invited them to the studio, where Jodeci was doing a remix. He called their rep, immediately wanting them to sign with his newly formed Bad Boy Record label. The wife of actor Omar Epps reflects, “We’re really blessed because I just came back to the group in 20 years. Just to see the love from everyone is really amazing. We have to put some music out. We have a bond that we just can’t get out of.” Epps turns to Pamela Long. “We’ve loved on each other hard and we’ve had some pretty hard break-ups. I’m just grateful for this moment here.”

Tax Impact of Selling Your Home By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer Usually, profits you earn are taxable. However, if you sell your home, you may not have to pay taxes on the money you

gain. Here are some tips to keep in mind if you sell your home this year. You may be able to exclude part or all of the gain from the sale of your home. This rule may apply if you meet the eligibility test. Parts of the test involve your ownership and use of the home. You must have

owned and used it as your main home for at least two out of the five years before the date of sale. There are exceptions to the ownership, use and other rules. One exception applies to people with a disability. Another applies to certain members of the military. That rule includes certain government and Peace Corps workers. For more on this topic, see IRS Publication 523, Selling Your Home. The most you can exclude from tax is $250,000. This limit is $500,000 for joint returns. The Net Investment Income Tax will not apply to the excluded gain. If the gain is not taxable, you may not

need to report the sale to the IRS on your tax return. You must report the sale on your tax return if you can’t exclude all or part of the gain. You must report the sale if you choose not to claim the exclusion. That’s also true if you get Form 1099-S, Proceeds From Real Estate Transactions. If you report the sale, you should review the Question and Answers on the Net Investment Income Tax on IRS.gov. Generally, you may exclude the gain from the sale of your main home only once every two years. Some exceptions may apply to this rule. If you own more than one home, you may only exclude the gain on the sale of your main home. Your main home usually is the home that you live in most of the time. If you claimed the firsttime homebuyer credit when you bought the home, special rules apply to the sale. If you sell your main home at a loss, you can’t deduct your loss on your tax return. After you sell your home and move, update your address with the IRS. To do this, file Form 8822, Change of Address. Mail it to the address listed on the form’s instructions. If you purchase health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you should also notify the Marketplace when you move out of the area covered by your current Marketplace plan. Different rules apply if you sell rental property. If you failed to report or reported in error, just remember for every tax problem there is a solution. Constant W. From Prison to Motivational Speaker By Nicholas A. Curry Defender Staff Writer For some, it takes more than two chances to get things right and in order. Life happens, things happen, and people make mistakes. Ronald Lee, 25-year-old Chicago native, is living proof that one can overcome their regrettable past and live their dream. Lee has spent six years of his young life in prison. He has been convicted of two felonies, and many had lost hope for his life. After serving 4.5 years in prison for an armed robbery charge, Lee had initially begun to start a new life and never look back. Unfortunately, things did not work out as smoothly as planned. Nearly three months later he was arrested again, this time being charged with aggravated use of a firearm by felon. He then had to serve an additional two years in prison until his release in 2015. After Lee’s second conviction he would often get discouraged

while incarcerated. “The way prison is set up, it’s set up to break you down. The gray and brick walls, the bars on the door, it’s set up to break you mentally and make you submit. The things you are subject to on a daily basis, it’s just really made to break you. I honestly feel like it’s similar to a slave master on a plantation” Lee said. Though he has made mistakes and was guilty of the crimes, Lee always had family and friends in his corner who never stopped believing in him. But after being incarcerated the second time, he often began to doubt himself. “Once I got out and then I went back, I started to feel hopeless. I started to question my faith. I started to ask myself is this really for me? Is this my story? Am I just going to be in and out of jail my entire life?” Lee told the Chicago Defender. But a letter that Lee received from his grandmother during his second prison term restored his faith and was all the inspiration he needed to transform his life. In the letter his grandmother informed

“The way prison is set up . . . it’s set up to break you mentally and make you submit.” — Ronald Lee him that she loved him, and that she still believed in him. She told him that she was confident that he will still achieve all of the goals that he has set out for himself, and that prison was not the plan for his life. Lee is doing just that. Since his release in 2015 he has become a motivational speaker who addresses youth across the city of Chicago. He has spoken at Kennedy-King College, as well as various non-profit organizations and churches across the South Side. He feels obliged to encourage black youth, constantly informing them of the importance of living a crime-free life. The Chicago Defender asked, “Would you have listened to you if the tables were turned?” Lee had

an intriguing response. “I would have heard them but I probably wouldn’t have listened. But on a scale of 1-10, my passion for speaking and encouraging youth is a 10. I do this for them. I don’t do it for monetary gain. I do it to share my story, help the people from my neighborhood, people from Englewood, people that are from anywhere. When they look at me, they can see someone who has actually lived through the story that they are speaking about. I know firsthand the consequences that can happen for making bad decisions. I can relate to the youth, I’m not someone that came from the suburbs and cannot identify with the harsh realities our youth face in the city on a daily basis. I’ve went back and forth from jail throughout my entire youth, and then I came and made something of myself. I speak to show that it is possible; it’s never too late to make something of yourself,” Lee said. He hopes that his inspiring words resonate with the young people.

Ronald Lee

Lee also has his hand in other business ventures. “Fly Money” is a brand that he and his brothers created one year ago. The “Fly Money” creators produce modern, urban clothing apparel, though it plans to become much more versatile with its merchandise. They currently sell T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants and scarves as their young business evolves. Mistakes will always be made. Solutions for those mistakes are pivotal to one’s success. Lee shows that prison does not always determine one’s future. More important, he demonstrates that confidence in the self, and unconditional love from family is what matters most.

The 2016 Chicago Football Classic: A 19 Year Profile in HBCU Scholastic & Sports Success By Andrea Smith Defender Contributing Writer Well, the final flag has dropped and the last whistle has blown. After many months of hard work strategizing, planning, preparing and implementing the yearly monumental education and sports extravaganza celebration at Soldier Field, better known as the 19th Annual Chicago Football Classic (CFC), honoring the legacy and enduring commitment of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), another highly successful, well-attended and dynamic “Soldier Field College Football Showdown” has drawn to a close. And much to the joy, delight and Chi-town bragging rights of their legion of fans, alumni, friends, family and supporters, first-time CFC football combatants, the prowling Panthers of Clark-Atlanta University defeated returning Classic veterans Central State University, in a

thrilling, pulse pounding and hardfought 20-13 finish. According to Clark Atlanta President Dr. Ronald A. Johnson, “We are extremely proud to have emerged victorious as the winners of the 2016 Chicago Football Classic. At Clark Atlanta University, our entire team of administrators, educators, students, athletic coaching staff and football players alike strive not only to totally immerse ourselves in whatever we’re doing at the time — but each and every one of us also work very hard to successfully merge these disparate disciplines into an ever-evolving, premiere Historically Black College institution of higher learning and achievement excellence.” Clark Atlanta’s gracious victory statement says a lot, and yet it’s just one part of the phenomenal success-oriented story about the September 10 Classic, which as usual, filled the south lakefront stadium with a diverse multitude of energized and enthusiastic foot-

ball fans, local kids, residents and positive role models who populate many city neighborhoods. “It was a beautiful sight to see, all of these eager, determined young African-Americans coming together, united not by violence or tragedy — but actively pursuing their dreams related to college and higher education,” said Corliss Garner, Senior V.P. of BMO Harris Bank. The first 1,000 College Fair attendees were rewarded with

free tickets. Margaret Brown, a mother of two Chicago high school students, expressed it best: “My son and daughter were both so enthusiastic about the Chicago Football Classic event, and in particular the College & Empowerment Fair, that they were up at 5 a.m., to make sure that we would not be late. This is a great idea and I hope they repeat it every year. Our families need the information and resources provided by these HBCUs.” Standing on centerfield following the CFC’s opening ceremonies before stands packed with an estimated 49,000 eager attendees, CFC co-founder Everett Rand reflected on the meaning of the day’s events: “On behalf of me and my co-founding partners Larry Huggins and my brother Tim Rand, our partners, corporate sponsors and supporters, as well as everyone associated with the Chicago Foot-

ball Classic, it means so much to us to have supporters like you who have been by our side these past nineteen years. We simply say a profoundly big ‘THANK YOU’ for being the driving force behind this games. It’s because of your ongoing commitment to excellence, and your fantastic support that we are able to keep the Chicago Football Classic Scholarship Foundation, Inc. going to help build the next generation of leaders within the African-American community.”
At the end of the day, CFC co-founder and businessman Larry Huggins put it this way, “So believe me when we tell you that at next year’s event — in honor of the Classic’s 20th Anniversary — we’ll be counting on everyone to stand beside us, as we go all out to show Chicago and the nation just how valuable, important and essential our youth and our Historically Black Colleges and Universities are to the fabric and future of the United States.”

Is Your Liver Healthy? By Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer

Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist “Please forget about adding so much bread. . . . It’s best to use as little filler as possible,” I remember the San Francisco culinary instructor advising our class during a 1980s discussion about restaurant vs. family recipes. We had each brought family recipes to class, and the instructor had spent most of the afternoon offering “professional” improvements. After vetoing the dried herbs in my grandmother’s incomparable gumbo, the instructor also shared “improvements” for my mother’s fantastic meatballs seasoned with bread crumbs and vegetables. “Those additions have more to do with saving money than adding flavor,” she had said slowly looking around the tables as if she were describing a crime. Later, searching for clarity (as well as meatball recipes) in what was then my small cookbook collection, I discovered that in Helen Worth’s 1959 Cooking Without Recipes, Worth had indeed labeled additions to meatloaf and meatballs as “extenders.” A little research offered more of a glimpse into 1980s culinary climate changes taking place during that time when the cachet of home cooking began taking a back burner to celebrity chefs. time when Wolfgang Puck opened Spago in Los Angeles and when questioned, my mother admitted replacing our family’s traditional macaroni and cheese recipe with one from Martha Stewart’s new cookbook. Recently, as our national cooking culture pendulum seems to be swinging back to cooking at home (even with kits), I thought about the “snobby” cooking teacher when I answered a recipe request for a “delicious deviled crab dish for an inexperienced cook on a serious budget.” I tested several versions before coming up with this delicious version that with just a few steps extends a small amount of expensive claw crab met with canned salmon. Easy Deviled Seafood 1 (16 ounce) can salmon 6 to 8 ounces crab meat 1/4 cup each: Dijon-style mustard, oat bran 2 tablespoons prepared Creole seasoning blend, or see note 1 egg, beaten Thyme sprigs, optional Heat oven to 425 degrees. Place salmon and crab in a medium bowl; remove any bones and cartilage. Top seafood with the mustard, bran, seasoning blend and egg. Use your hands to loosely mix ingredients together. Spoon

into small buttered ramekins, pie pans, cups or containers of choice. Bake until cooked through and browning on sides, about 20 to 22 minutes. Remove from oven. Set aside to cool 5 minutes. Garnish with thyme sprigs, if desired. Makes 6 servings. Note: To make Creole seasoning, stir together 1 tablespoon sweet paprika; 1 teaspoon each: ground cumin, dried thyme, garlic powder, coarse salt; 1/2 teaspoon onion powder and 1/4 teaspoon each: ground mace, allspice. Use as directed. Store remaining spice blend in a cool, dark place, in a sealed food storage bag or other container. Most people are not familiar with what their organs do or how they function. They know something about the brain, heart, lungs, stomach, and of course the sense organs like the eyes, ears, nose and mouth, but the rest are not really considered by most. For instance, do you understand the importance of your liver? Your liver filters blood coming from the digestive tract, which it then distributes to the rest of your body. Before it distributes the blood it detoxifies chemicals, metabolizes drugs and makes proteins for bodily functions, such as blood clotting and transporting important nutrients throughout the body. The liver also plays an important role in controlling the amount of blood sugar in your body. Fat in your liver is normal, just as fat is a part of our body makeup. However, too much can cause serious health issues. The liver is a meaty organ on the right side of your stomach, weighing about three pounds, and has a reddish-brown color. Fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis) is an accumulation of fat in the liver. This disease is broken down into two categories: alcohol-related fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Consider the following contributors to AFLD and NAFLD. Alcohol According to the American Liver Foundation, alcoholic fatty liver disease results from fat deposits in the liver cells. The symptoms are so mild they go undetected. Symptoms can include fatigue, weakness and discomfort in the right upper abdomen. Heavy drinking or alcoholism contribute to fatty livers. This disease can be reversed by abstaining from alcohol. Obesity NAFLD is the most common liver disease and is linked to obesity. NAFLD is “considered a manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors like high blood pressure, excess abdominal fat and unhealthy cholesterol levels that raise the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other health problems” according to the Radiological Society of America. NAFLD increases the risk of developing cardiovascular issues such as heart attacks and stroke. This disease can be prevented by weight loss, a healthy diet, decreasing caloric intake, and increasing physical exercise and or activity. Diabetes People with NAFLD have an increased amount of fat buildup

“Fat in your liver is normal, just as fat is a part of our body make-up. However, too much can cause serious health issues.” in their liver, which makes it very challenging to maintain healthy glucose levels. This makes the body more resistant to insulin, which puts a strain on your pancreas, causing the development of type 2 diabetes. A healthy liver plays an important role in regulating your body’s blood sugar, so it’s important to follow a healthy diet to prevent diabetes. Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol) Hyperlipidemia is the scientific term for what we commonly know as high cholesterol. Hyperlipidemia is the excessive amount of lipids (fat) in your blood. It is possible to manage this with increased exercise and dietary precautions that can decrease this common issue in the Black community. Doctors might prescribe medication if dietary changes aren’t working. Rapid Weight Loss Rapid weight encourages the liver to produce endogenous fatty acids to compensate for the fat missing from the diet because of weight loss. This increases fat in the liver. So if you are dieting to lose weight, manage your weight loss to move at a slow, gradual rate with small changes over time. A recommended rate is 2 pounds of weight loss per week. Medication Medications such as aspirin, steroids, tamoxifen, and tetracycline can cause fatty liver. Your doctor can prescribe you a different medication if you’re predisposed to these side effects. Pregnancy Though rare, acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) occurs in the third trimester or early postpartum period. This condition is potentially fatal if it isn’t caught in time. The disease has been attributed to the abnormality in fetal fatty acid metabolism. It’s hard to diagnose because it shares features with other common conditions. Conclusion: A healthy diet and knowledge of causes that increase the possibility of a fatty liver is worth being aware of and putting into practice the steps to avoid the bad behaviors that can result in AFLD or NAFLD. www.chicagodefender.com
