Teachers committed to educating their students complain that inadequate budgets equal no supplies. By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The Chicago Public Schools season is in high gear going into its third week, and the tension between the teachers and CPS may be just as high. Chicago teachers are entering the second year without a contract with CPS. As CPS CEO Forrest Claypool repeatedly says, there are no additional funds to meet the contractual terms. According to salary.com, the average teacher’s salary is between $49,147$65,004, but with longer school days, bumped up health care insurance and no raise since 2012, many CPS teachers feel pushed to the wall. While money is one of the main concerns in the negotiation, it is not the driving force in moving forward with a strike. When speaking with current Chicago Public School teachers, they said their main motivation are the students. There is more to the story behind the teachers’ feelings on working in a system that many feel has become increasingly “thankless” and forcing experienced educators out. This includes over 50 CPS principals who have resigned or retired in 2016. A strike date of Oct. 17 is on the calendar for thousands of teachers to leave the classroom. The Chicago Teachers Union House of Delegates has not yet voted on the decision, but close sources are sure this vote will be passed. While teachers have laid their roots down in the city and have invested heavily in what they love to do, some are conflicted with the decision to strike. The Chicago Defender interviewed some tenured teachers who work in the CPS system to get their perspective be-

With a strike looming in less than a month, teachers who have been interviewed preferred to stay anonymous, afraid of possible administrative backlash. A teacher for nearly 14 years, Ms. Jones (not her real name) has worked in a variety of fields before going back to college. She currently works on the North Side at a selective-enrollment school but comes from a long family tradition of educators. “My mom is a teacher, and my grandmother — along with my aunts and uncles, from preschool teachers to university presidents from around the country,” she said. It was in college when she discovered this is where she wanted to be. She said, “I fought it for a really long time. It wasn’t because I didn’t enjoy it, but I was always looking for that out.”
Budget Pinch
The recent CPS budget and the layoffs of nearly 1,000 teachers and support staff have put a great deal of pressure on classroom size and the workload that most teachers are facing. Throughout the years, Ms. Jones has taught fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students. “Due to budget cuts in typical CPS fashion, we had lost the position of teach-

ing average classroom sizes. So it was either someone take the entire 6th grade or take splits all the way down the line,” she explains. “Having split grade levels is not in anybody’s best interest. You’re trying to teach a 5th grade and 6th grade simultaneously. It’s just a horrible task overall. The kids don’t get what they need and the teachers are stretched so thin.” But understanding the challenge at hand, she accepted the entire class of over 100 students. “I said I would do it and take the entire 6th grade. They were the lowest-performing group and the worst-behaved group in the building. So I saw this as a challenge. There were so many of them compared to others. We brought on extra teachers with fundraising efforts.” It was only the year before that Jones was teaching 15 kids in one class and close to 20 students in another. An unbelievable task for today’s standards with 30-40 kids in one classroom. This doesn’t deter her from giving her best and wrestling with the reality of a strike being close to her doorstep. Although the school she teaches is considered in one of the city’s more diverse neighborhoods, students come from as far south as South Shore and as far west as the Austin community. It’s important to have an objective and empathic mindset when working with all students from various backgrounds. “You have to be persistent, consistent and you have to be fair. One of the things that kids who come from at-risk neighborhoods or fractioned families, they just need someone to be fair. Somebody who they know — they may need something to eat, or someone didn’t come home the continued on page 7

Thursday night was Congressman Charlie Rangel’s night to shine when the National Newspaper Publishers Association honored him for his years of service at its gala in Washington, D.C. Known to most as the man who stepped into Adam Clayton Powell’s big shoes and kept steppin’, representing Harlem and all that is Black, Charles B. Rangel is a champion of the people, and the people love him. The 86-year old statesman was born in Harlem, New York, and went on to become U.S. Rep. Charles B. Rangel for New York’s 13th district (since 2013), Democratic Party. Prior to that he served the 15th District from 1993-2013, the 16trh District from 1983-1993, the18th district from 19711973 and 19th District from 1973 -1983. Rangel, who always stepped to the front of the line on behalf of his people, will retire from office at the end of the congressional year with his dignity and integrity intact. Rangel is the second-longest currently serving member of the House of Representatives, serving continuously since 1971. As its most senior member, he is also the Dean of New York’s congressional delegation. Rangel was the first

EDUCATION
Deputy Secretary of Education James Cole Comes Home to Dunbar By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer James Cole is the nation’s deputy secretary of education, but long before he was a dignitary working with President Obama on new initiatives, he was a kid from Englewood. Cole’s 10th grade year at Dunbar was a tough one. He had just lost his mother just months before he was robbed at gunpoint the August before the school year started. But it was an important mentor who pulled him through those tough times and pushed him to become the first in his family to graduate from college. “Ms. Schmidt, my 10th grade teacher here at Dunbar, was a mentor to me,” he said. “And if it weren’t for her, I for sure wouldn’t have gone to the University of Illinois. Life would have turned out in a very different kind of way.” Cole’s teacher insisted that he go visit the University of Illinois. She sent him down to the Champaign-Urbana campus to stay with her own son, who was studying there. “That was the game-changer,” Cole said. “It was one thing to hear her talk about statistics and people graduating, but it was another to go to down there, stay in a dorm room, attend a basketball game, and talk to her son about what it’s like to be there. Actually experiencing the campus is what made the difference. That sealed the deal for me because it became real.” Schmidt and her influence changed the course of Cole’s life. It’s why he personally knows the essential role that mentors play and works to encourage more mentors to get involved with the youth who need them. He oversees the U.S. Department of Education’s work on Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Task Force, which is an initiative to help boys and young men of color reach their full potential. My Brother’s Keeper currently has over 250 local communities across the coun-

“I’m really excited about all of the work that the Obama administration has done to increase opportunities, especially for all young men of color.” — James Cole try that are dedicated to this goal and after two years, 80 percent of the task force’s recommendations have been implemented. In addition to working on federal policy initiatives and grant program to help children from “cradle to career,” the program has received more than $600 million in grants and resources so far. “I’m really excited about all of the work that the Obama administration has done to increase opportunities, especially for all young men of color,” he said. “We have My Brother’s Keeper, which really tries to give
opportunities to kids, and I think that there are just so many more opportunities than we realize. Talking about what opportunities are available is something I’m really excited to do and is something I didn’t know as much about when I was in school.” Cole came back to Chicago Sept. 14 and visited Dunbar Vocational Career Academy, alma mater, to tour the its newly launched career and technical skills programs. Dunbar’s new programs include ad-

vanced construction, electrical, welding and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). They are aligned with the school’s historic roots as a trade school and help students who seek alternative options to traditional college studies. “It brings back great memories about my time here at Dunbar, going through the vocational programs, and talking to many of the kids who are excited about post-secondary opportunities,” Cole said. “So, it’s been very exciting to come back. It’s been very personally rewarding to share, talk about opportunities and to share inspiration. I’ve had a great time interacting with the students and teachers here.”
Getting Into College
In a private session with students, Cole talked about access to college, its affordability, and how to make the decision of where to go. “The main goal was to communicate to students’ next steps between now and college,” Cole said. “I talked a lot about FAFSA and the fact that we have $150 billion a year that we give in grants or loans from the federal level that’s all needbased. Many times, our students feel like they can’t go to college because they can’t afford it.” Mentors can help students find and take advantage of that opportunity. Cole says the evidence shows that students who have a mentor in their lives perform better in school, are more likely to go to college, and are more likely to graduate from college. The gift of mentorship is a priceless one. “The difference you can make in a child’s life can’t even be measured,” Cole said. “A mentor is often the difference between kids who go to college and complete it, and those who don’t. Mentors can really be a complete change-maker in a kid’s life.” www.chicagodefender.com

Why Can’t Police See the Problem? E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar
Defender Executive Editor Here we go again. Can someone please tell me why it’s so difficult for the police to see their error? If they can’t see what we see, then the problem lies with them. And we’ve been saying that all along. The racism demonstrated through the execution murders they carry out against Black men has no other explanation. Who are these men and women who see themselves above the law and take the law into their own hands? What mission are they seeking to carry out? This is why the Black Lives Matter movement exists, because it is evident and true from our perspective that the majority of the police do not care about Black life. And they have the nerve to retaliate with Blue Lives Matter. Who is blue anyway? No one. It’s the color of a uniform. It is not a race, ethnicity or religion. We exclaim the Black Lives Matter because we experience the extreme brutality just because we are Black, and that’s a fact. White lives have always mattered, no matter their ethnicity, nationality or religion. On Monday, the video footage released showed police in Tulsa, Oklahoma, allegedly shooting and killing an unarmed African-American man on Friday night after he walked toward his SUV with his arms raised. Identified as 40-year old Terence Crutcher, he can be seen walking slowly toward his car,
which authorities alleged had been left abandoned and running in the middle of the road The video footage captures an officer following Crutcher slowly from behind with a gun pointed at him. In the video, we can see Crutcher approaching the driver's-side door. Next we see what looks like he had been stunned by a stun gun (which was verified that he was) and he drops to the ground after being shocked. He was fatally shot moments after. At a news conference Monday, Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan said Officer Tyler Turnbough tasered Crutcher, while a second officer, Betty Shelby, fired at him after telling a dispatcher that Crutcher was not cooperating Jordan said Crutcher had no weapon on him or in his SUV. Jordan called the footage "disturbing" and has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review the case. The Tulsa Police Department has opened a criminal investigation into the shooting, The New York Times reports. And the federal Justice Department has opened a separate civil rights investigation into the shooting, according to the paper. "I will make this promise to you: We will achieve justice," Jordan said.
More of the Same
To the African-American community across the country, this is just more of the same — fatal shootings of unarmed African-Americans by the police, who always have an explanation. So this is an issue that is not unique to Tulsa, but rather an epidemic that has never stopped happening in America. And yet you turn on the television and we see Ahmad Khan Rahami — identified in an FBI bulletin just hours earlier as a man wanted in the weekend bombings in New York City and New Jersey — who

pulled a gun, shot an officer and triggered a running gun battle with the police. Rahami allegedly set off a shrapnel-packed pressure-cooker bomb similar to those used in the Boston Marathon attack that exploded Saturday night in New York's Chelsea section, wounding 29 people, none seriously. An unexploded pressure-cooker bomb was found blocks away. The would-be terrorist was wounded in the shootout with police, and his bloodied body was loaded into the back of an ambulance, just 50 hours after the first blast that started it all. Rahami, 28, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Afghanistan, who lived with his Muslim family in Elizabeth, New Jersey, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the leg as authorities began drawing up charges in a case that spread fear across the New York area and revived anxiety about homegrown terrorism.
Letter to the Editor Focus on the Real Problems John Kass, at least you were willing to acknowledge that there are no jobs in Chicago for the "Feral Boys." There have been a number of very deliberate resources missing for some time. And most recently CPS has moved to close the Alternative Charter Schools that were demonstrating strong results. We have had more young African-American men killed in Chicago than the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined (but we need permission to say Black Lives Matter); yet, no one sees House Speaker Mike Madigan's dictatorship as criminal. Your article does not seem like the Kass we know. We depend on you to look above the trickle-down outcomes. You know Chicago for its grit and glory Don't start looking for a false sense of what will make Chicago Great Again. What you and Chicagoans are finally seeing on the dash and body cams, at Homan Square lock-up, with Jon Burge trials, the coerced confessions, the wrongful sentences and a Bond Court process that seems third world. This is the cover-up and corruption that must also be acknowledged as part of the city's
I’m stopping here because I need not go further with superfluous details for the purpose of my discussion. I don’t even have to say it because you know. How do white police officers justify killing a Black man whose back is to them, unarmed with hands above his head? I don’t care that the officer who shot him said he wasn’t being cooperative. He wasn’t shooting at them nor posing a threat. Still, the female officer shot him dead. On the other hand, the New York police officers were able to only wound a man who had allegedly caused injury to 29 people and shot at them. Was he being cooperative? I think not. In fact, he was posing a major threat in that it appears he was attempting to kill them. societal issue, the "missing moral fiber" that Police Supt. We Need Wholesale Reform Do you think it’s bad? Do you think more cops are the cure? If jailing them is the answer, then so is slavery. They're having babies faster than we're educating/employing them, so what's predictable in 2018 and 2022 with our present solutions? We know our neighborhoods have been strategically seeded with heroin, crack and guns, and that those perpetrators should be jailed. Are they? If we don't reduce supply, how do we reduce demand? Men in blue, you cannot justify this sort of behavior, which happens again and again, over and over. And too many times the white police officers walk away, keep their jobs, pensions and happy life. It kills us that you act so shocked when a young Black man feels he has nothing to live for takes it upon himself to take out police officers because they feel hunted. Is it right? We know we can't educate children who are hungry, homeless, sleep-disrupted, lead-poisoned, sexually abused, and otherwise neglected, blamed and hated. We know we get what we pay for. What do we find if we follow the money? And where's the evidence of our love? How can we expect lifestyles to transform while we're feeding families processed food; shuttering mental health clinics; validating fraudulent foreclosures and evictions; sanctioning trade union barriers; withholding public housing funds; demonstrating powerlessness to police misconduct; porting school-revenue TIF funds from poor communities to downtown venues; endorsing predatory financial policies/ practices, like debtor prisons and compounded municipal fines/ fees from Chicago's poorest; and — of course — closing schools, cutting education day care and social service budgets while reinvesting in the architects of Chicago's failed public school system. Nothing less than wholesale reform can fix what's broken in Chicago's Black communities. I believe "only a whole-system solution can transform a whole-system problem." Do you? Mayor Gets Blame
Feeling hope is important, a teacher says. night before — they need to know that you were going to be there no matter what they did, they are going to get the same reaction out of you.” At the high school level, across town on the South Side — a high school teacher feels similar to Ms. Jones. Mr. Washington, who has had his battle with keeping a positive outlook, discussed the top reasons he became a teacher. He said equality was the first reason. “I believe that all kids deserve an equal and just education. Community plays a major role in giving back to my community. I grew up in Humboldt Park but I don’t teach in Humboldt Park, I teach in South Shore because this is my community. I live and teach here. I have roots here. I think that’s important.” Washington feels that having hope that things would get better for students who may have the decks stacked against them is important. “Hope for the future. The reason I teach high school students is because some people give up on young adult students. They think, ‘If they don’t have it by now, they are not going anywhere.’ I think that’s their attitude especially for inner-city kids. They’re not going to make it or they’re a lost cause. I don’t believe that.” Having attended a major top 10 university, his goal was to become an attorney until he was persuaded to work with Teach America. Teach is an organization that trains college students to become certified teachers. Although the program has come under scrutiny for its high turnover rate, it was there that Washington was placed to work with grade-school students on the www.chicagodefender.com
Having worked within the CPS system for close to 10 years, Washington is a tenured teacher working under the constraints of new evaluations and longer hours with no additional pay. Some feel the system that is in place was a work-in-progress before Mayor Rahm Emanuel entered office. “It started with Mayor Daley, but we just didn’t see it. He was as open with what he was doing with his vision for education. With Rahm, he’s made it very clear. His mission is to dismantle the union and privatize education. He wants there to be choice for parents, but this means no public schools in the way that we know public schools to be.” With the clock ticking, the anxiety is there among the teachers and administrators who also have their children enrolled in Chicago Public Schools. This would also impact the loss of financial contribution to many households. Ms. Jones concurs with Washington’s sentiments. “I’m on a team of more than six women. They go home and they all have families. I don’t know how those women do it. How do you say it’s okay to not pay the teachers, not give us raises or not compensate us for our education?” She pauses, frustrated but stern. Having worked in corporate America prior to teaching, she feels strongly about the lack of equality among men and women in education. As a teacher, it’s important that the public understand there are many teachers who care a great deal about their students and are torn between leaving the classroom or making a stand. “I don’t want to strike. So, from a personal standpoint, this is something that I wrestle with daily.” She says, “I’m also very realistic if this was any other business, especially any other male-run business, this would not be a problem — people don’t talk about that much. This is a female-dominated industry except at the very top. If they are not going to give us what we need and what we deserve, then yes, that’s what we need to do. We need to fish or cut bait.” Feeling similar on moving forward with a strike in mid-October hangs heavy on Washington, who has discussed other alternate forms of income with his wife — also an educator in another school district. “I feel forced to strike because I can see the pitfalls of these issues. There is a little bit of a divide between the old and the new regime. Is it going to change a whole lot? No, I think we’ll get a little, but we’ll be giving up a lot,” He said,
“It’s sad. Striking isn’t going to change everything. We’re striking just to get an inch. We may get one or two concessions out of the whole thing.” Living in the community where he work is a bittersweet pill because he is searching for other forms of employment as memories of 2012 haunt him. “If I get something, I’m out. That’s sad for the kids because the system is broken. I don’t feel like
going through this again.” As we conclude with getting an up close and personal perspective from real teachers who currently work at CPS area schools, it comes down to the connection between the teacher and their students. Ms. Jones said, “That moment when you see that kid get it. It’s that moment you get the note from that parent who said, ‘My kid never says anything about school and my

For Humor Writer Ajayi, It All Started With a Tweet
Luvvie Ajayi says her book is her biggest accomplishment. (Photo Courtesy of Luvvie Ajayi) By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer Humor writer Luvvie Ajayi has a serious side eye. Over at AwesomelyLuvvie.com, Ajayi is known for her quick wit, fearless statements, and no-holds-barred op-eds. The Chicagoan and 13-year blog vet has been talking all things pop culture, politics, and everything else since MySpace was a thing, never shying away from the tough topics. Basically, from the very beginning, she’s judged somebody. “I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual” is the blogger-turned-author’s first book, though, and just one week since its release, it hits that difficult sweet spot — the place that tests common sense with unrestricted humor. As the book’s ratings climb the charts, her fans — both new and old — have painted the online world red with judgment in support. Even songstress Janelle Monae and famed TV producer Shonda Rhimes — who Ajayi calls her “Fairy Bae Mother” — have tweeted in support of the book. Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba has a copy, too. And it all started with a tweet. “I have the exact moment and time that I came up with the book because I was

After a writer plagiarized her work in 2014 claiming “he didn’t know he couldn’t do that,” Luvvie went on a Twitter rant. She asked, “Did some of us get a limited-edition handbook that others didn’t get? You know the one that gives instructions on how not to suck?”
Landing Her Book Deal
Then and there, she decided she’d create that manual and a year later, Ajayi had her book deal. “I’m Judging You” is definitely comedic writing at its finest, but you’ve never really read humor like this. Ajayi, who was born in Nigeria, talks about what it was like to come to the U.S. as a nervous 9-year-old and the ignorant comments people make about Africa in Zamunda Is Not a Country. Neither Is Africa. She attacks victim blaming and supporting predators in Rape Culture Is Real and It Sucks. She hits on using religion to oppress groups of people and as a separation tactic in “#FixItJesus #BindItBuddha #AmendItAllah.” She discusses microaggressions as a form of racism and those who ignore their racial privilege in

“The Privilege Principle.” Nothing is off topic, nothing is left unsaid, and that is exactly how Ajayi wanted her book debut to be. “Talking about harder topics is kind of what I’m known for,” Ajayi says. “One day I might be talking about complete shenanigans and the next day, talk about police brutality. And I think one of the great things about humor is that you can use it to take down people’s defense systems, and while they’re not paying attention and kind of relaxed, you can talk about what matters.” The book has four main parts — life, culture, social media, and fame — but the culture section is by far the weightiest section. Ajayi says that decision was intentional. “It’s basically the bulk of the book and my philosophy in general is that when you have platforms of elevation, you need to use them to do something of substance,” she says. “This is my way of doing that.” But Ajayi didn’t always believe that her elevation would come from her writing and held on to a full-time job for years, fighting “tooth and nail” until she realized her voice
was meant to be a platform. “I finally stopped fighting, and that’s when really cool things started to happen,” she says. “Doors started opening and things started dropping in my lap. I realized I was supposed to be paying attention to that all along.” Doors — like interviewing media mogul Oprah at the screening of OWNTV’s Greenleaf — definitely started to open. “This is a moment that you’re going to remember for the rest of your life, so take it in a little bit,” she told herself during the interview. “It was amazing.” Even with all of her recent successes, Ajayi says her book is her biggest accomplishment yet. “I feel like I climbed a mountain, like how it someone feels when they run the iron man competition,” she says. As people read Ajayi’s “ultimate climb,” she wants them to leave with more than just tears of laughter. “I want people to walk away from this book understanding that no matter who they are or where they are, they can do something to make this world better than it is,” she says. “It doesn’t always have to be a grand gesture, but I think it matters that they actively try to find small ways in our lives to leave this place better than we found it.” www.chicagodefender.com

Lou Bertuca: Youngest in Charge By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer White Sox Park — better known as U.S. Cellular field and referred to by fans as The Cell — is a historic landmark on the South Side of Chicago. The park was originally constructed on a city dump in 1909 by Chicago businessman Charles Comiskey. Three years later it was renamed Comiskey Park. Throughout the years, the beloved park has gone through a ping pong game of name alterations from Comiskey Park to White Sox Park and back again, until 1991 when White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf threatened to move the baseball club to St. Petersburg, Florida, receiving $200 million in public funding to break ground for a new stadium. After the old Comiskey Park was demolished making room for a brand new venue across the street, its naming rights was secured by U.S. Cellular Field until 2016. Beginning in November, the Cell, a name that Chicagoans had come to embrace, will be replaced by a new one — Guaranteed Rate Field. One of the largest mortgage lenders, headquartered in Chicago, has found a sports home in the heart of the Bridgeport community. Taking it all in stride is Illinois Sports Facilities Authority CEO Lou Bertuca, who oversees the operations of the ballpark and maintains a friendly alliance with their number one tenant — the White Sox. The 31-year old Chicago native is the youngest CEO to lead ISFA, and moving into his second year, there have been some tremendous strides. The first major move is using the ballpark’s space for non-traditional baseball activities, hosting the first-ever music festival, Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day Festival on Sept. 24. and NIU Huskies vs. University of Toledo on Nov. 9. “I don’t think it was a secret that this place hadn’t been used to its full potential. The Chicago White Sox played their home games here and then it was kind of empty year-around. When I got here, I wanted to end the drought. I wanted to bring more revenue into the park. So we had to figure a way to bring promotions here,” said Bertuca. Growing up in the Northwest Chicago community of Galewood, Bertuca is a former Chicago Police officer, and his mother worked for a Chicago-based company. He said his father loved the Cubs and his mother loved the White Sox. “There’s room in my heart for both teams. Chicago Bears, the Bulls — you name it. We supported everyone.” ISFA Funding “The majority of our [ISFA] funding comes from a tax that we evoke for people that stay in hotels in the city of Chicago. In terms of pure appropriation, we don’t get www.chicagodefender.com

our money from an appropriation body,” he explains. “It’s very complicated. We get our monies from state advance. We don’t have a Department of Revenue so we rely on them. So, we do have interaction with the state, but the majority of our money is not subject to appropriation by the state.” This includes making sure that a good percentage of construction contracts got to minority businesses. “Every year, we do about $10 million worth of construction. We have a goal of 30 percent of minority and women-owned businesses. We’ve exceeded that goal by six percent. We’re at 36 percent. You’ll be hard-pressed to find any organizations that have hit those numbers.” Bertuca understands the long history of segregation that has gripped tension between the African-American community and some long-standing residents in the Bridgeport community, but he feels it’s a new day. The ISFA has an agreement with the White Sox to donate 2,500 or more tickets during the season along with donating suites for non-profit organizations to auction. “We want to get as many kids here as much as possible. We have too many empty seats here. You bring a kid to their first baseball game, who are they going to be a fan of?” With close to 42,000 seats, restaurants, additional field screens added and a wide concourse to accommodate thousands of attendees without leaving the building, Bertuca feels the venue is the ideal location to host major festivals and concerts like Chance’s Magnificent Coloring Day event. “That’s another advantage for not just the facility but for the Chicago White Sox. From the Chance the Rapper event, you’re going to get people who had never been to this stadium to come to see this fest. When they come they will discover it’s an easy stadium to come to and get in and out of. They may come back to see a Chicago White Sox game or another show.”

SMITHSONIAN
The Chicago Defender at the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture By Kai EL’ Zabar Defender Executive Editor Finally, on a grand scale, the world will be able to take a glimpse inside the life and culture of African-Americans as they experience a journey through images, video, text, art and artifacts that introduce, reveal and expose the life and times of Africans who were taken from their homelands, enslaved and boarded on ships that sailed to America, a foreign land where they were stripped of the freedom to express their culture or even speak in their native languages. If you are astute and awake, you will recognize immediately the bravery, resilience, intellect and creative brilliance of a people who made good of all that was bad and persevered. The museum has been touted as an American Museum, an acknowledgment a long time coming. In the history of America, Blacks were always left out of the historical accountings except for mention of them as slaves and having no importance or significance, other than the fact that they picked cotton, tobacco, sug-
ar cane, and rice — only the main products of world commerce and trade. Many can remember sitting in their history class and dreading the passage in the history books that pointed to Africans as savages and cannibals. After the civil rights bill of 1964 and the rise of the Black Power movement, there was a push for Black history to be added to the history books. Since then it has continued to be a struggle. Courses popped up all over the country listed as part of college and university curriculum. Museums by and about Blacks were established through the country, but nothing like the Smithsonian new edition. So with only a few days before it is open to the world Saturday, Sept. 24, Washington is making ready for the new infusion of travelers that will travel from the around the world over to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, a powerful, history-making addition to the National Mall. The historic museum opening will feature much fanfare, including an outdoor dedication ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., and the museum will officially open

However, on Sept. 17 the doors opened to special invited guests, and as we walked in, the wonderment was indeed a vision to behold. What a sight to witness as a sea of people gathered to experience this acknowledgement that took years in the making. We stopped along the way to our destination viewing the text and visuals, stopping only to take photos. The various images were amazing, some as artifacts or life-sized bronze casts of Benjamin Bannecker, Claire Brown and more, to the plane the Tuskeegee Airman flew or the train car from which Pullman porters transported and threw the Chicago Defender newspaper off to Blacks to pick up and distribute. We were excited to see the value and importance of the Chicago Defender newspaper held in high esteem carried throughout.
Headlines from the Defender are seen throughout because it was there capturing the news, recording and documenting history. Special sections housing two exhibitions dedicated to the Chicago Defender on the second level below ground and the other on the third floor featuring the Black Press. The first level centers more around the Great Migration capturing the bodacious headlines and editorials of Robert Sengstacke Abbott that fueled the courage and motivated millions of Blacks to leave the South and move North. Mr. Abbott’s desk is found there. On the third floor we ventured into the section noted as the Black Press, where on a screen we noted the Pittsburgh Courier, our sister paper, when suddenly there was the 110th Anniversary cover of the Chicago Defender from July 2015 — the image of Robert Sengstacke Abbott, founding publisher, and Cheryl Mainor, the first woman publisher, posed together. It almost knocked us off our feet. The publisher was surprised beyond words, but more so she was humbled and honored to be among all those who have contributed so much in making a difference in the lives of our people and all of America. continued on page 11

Whatever you do, plan to go. What you can expect: 1. Like all Smithsonian museums, the NMAAHC will be free to the public! 2.The only national museum devoted exclusively to African-American culture. The museum focuses on understanding history through the viewpoint of the African-American experience, featuring collections documenting art, history and culture, covering artifacts from the African Diaspora to present day. 3. The building’s exterior is inspired by crowns used in West African art. Conceived by Ghanaian-born architect David Adjaye, the building’s exterior is artfully made up of a three-tiered, bronze-colored screen. This lattice pays tribute to the intricate ironwork forged by enslaved African-Americans in the southern United States. 4. The museum is eight stories tall. Five stories are above ground, and three stories below – and they will consist of 11 exhibitions covering a variety of topics from history and culture to community, music and the arts. 5. He reminded us that we have no idea what’s going to happen to the Republican Party. Rather we will just have to wait and see, “but we know one thing,” he said, “I think the party of Lincoln no longer exists. Instead, we observe a party comprised as a coalition of very sick people — Ku Klux Klan members, Dixiecrats and those who express hatred for immigrants, and are opposed to gays and a woman’s right to choose. They are able to hide behind Donald Trump’s image of wealth and Northern sophistication. Thy have held back and

Rangel says he remains excited about the future, and he and his wife have a very long list of things they look forward to doing. On that list is public speaking, traveling and raising funds for New York City Colleges. One of the high points in his career was his leadership in persuading the U.S. investors to pull out of Apartheid South Africa in 1986 and for founding the International Affairs program in the State Department in cooperation with Howard University. At the end of 2015, the program had trained over 200 “Rangel Fellows” for positions as foreign service officers in U.S. Embassies around the world. Others honored that night were Rep. G.K. Friday night at the Motown party, Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, 87 years old, received a beautiful bronze bust in his image in acknowledgement of his contribution. Conyers expressed gratitude for the honor but did not broach the subject of retirement. The very next day we met Congressman John Lewis of Georgia at the Georgia Party at the Museum of Women in the Arts, and it became crystal clear that the old guard is aging. Prostate Cancer Hits Blacks Harder By Eleana Elan
mal communication may contribute to late diagnosis, less effective treatment choice and poorer outcomes. We also know that black men develop prostate cancer at an earlier age with higher Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels than white men, and that they tend to develop more aggressive disease, based on the Gleason scores. Black men also tend to have more advanced disease at the time of diagnosis when compared to white men. What makes the prognosis worse is that there are no signs that warn patients of prostate cancer at its earliest stages, which is why it is of paramount importance that patients seek health care for “well visits (check-ups)” when they have do not have symptoms
Defender Contributing Writer A few years ago now my client/friend, a renowned fertility specialist, revealed to me just as we were about to wrap up his manuscript that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and that he would begin treatment soon, so he wanted to tie all the loose ends and finish our work. I heard him, but truth is, the creative process doesn’t work like that. Still I was empathetic, I got it. Suddenly his mortality was on the line. But here’s the point. As we talked about it, he shared with me, “I am so mad at myself. I knew it early but I just didn’t do anything about it. I didn’t go see the doctor, and prostate cancer if detected early can be cured.” He died not long after. The statistics are real. Black men are more likely to develop and die from prostate cancer than any other ethnic group. Research indicates that Black men develop prostate cancer at an approximate twofold incidence and die of the disease at about a 2.5 fold mortality rate. The adverse health care disparity for prostate cancer behavior in Black men has multifactorial etiology. It can be assumed that biologic factors, environmental factors, socioeconomic factors, and factors related to shared decision-making all contribute to the disease. The occurrence of prostate cancer in Black men in America and in the Caribbean is more than that in men of any other racial or ethnic group. It is estimated that men in the U.S. will develop 181,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2016, and 29,000 of those new cases will occur in Black men. It is also estimated that there will be 26,000 deaths caused by prostate cancer, and Black men will account for 4,500. Statistically, Black men have nearly a 50 percent higher incidence of prostate cancer compared to white men, and double the mortality. There is scientific evidence that the oncogenesis (tumor development) of prostate cancer in African-American men may have different molecular pathways involving pathways that have greater virulence and intensity. Some molecular differences may be related to an increased incidence of hereditary prostate cancer, while others may be part of a complex array of acquired molecular changes that involve biologic networks for the immune system, inflammation, and other systems. There are numerous racial differences in expression of genes involved with cancer development. The obesity factor can increase incidence and mortality related to prostate cancer.
Potential environmental factors
Environment and habits related to both personal behavior and greater likelihood to live/work in unfriendly ecological settings may impact the prevalence that is viewed as a predisposition. The reality that a tendency to eat a diet that contains more meat, high animal fats, including dairy, fewer plant-based antioxidants, and more processed foods with greater amounts of chemical preservatives may increase risk for prostate cancer development. More specifically, lycopene, an anti-oxidant
Factors to Note
“Factors such as trust issues regarding health care are widely accepted as common among Black men. . . .They will not go to the doctor, and therefore forfeit the possibility of decision-making about diagnosis and treatment. ” found in high concentration in tomatoes, has been associated with a lower incidence of prostate cancer, especially the more lethal tumors. Consequently, lifestyle indicates that Black men are more likely to live in areas that have greater proximity to environmental toxins from industrial waste, sewage processing plants, and areas with poorer air quality as well as poorer quality food. Black men may have more exposure to occupational chemicals related to pesticides, organic solvents used for cleaning, and industrial fumes in multiple manufacturing and processing plants.
Socioeconomic factors
Poverty increases risk for overall poor health. The lack of health insurance and lack of resources for medical coverage contribute to disease and poor health. Families that focus on making ends meet directly affect the social environment, including insufficient transportation for medical visits, greater risk for homelessness and inability to purchase medications or access pharmacies. Regular doctor checkups are not factored into the equation. The complexity of the collective impact of these factors leads to increased risk for prostate cancer being diagnosed at a later stage and increased risk for incomplete treatment and follow-up.
Cultural factors
Factors such as trust issues regarding health care and one’s well-being are widely accepted as common among Black men. Even if they’re married, they won’t talk

about physical differences in how they feel with anyone cutting out the possibility for input from their spouse. They will not go to the doctor, and therefore forfeit the possibility of decision-making about diagnosis and treatment. Breaches of the American Medical creed such as the Tuskegee Study is perhaps the most enduring wound in American health science. Known officially as the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, the 40-year experiment run by Public Health Service officials followed 600 rural black men in Alabama with syphilis over the course of their lives, refusing to tell patients their diagnosis, refusing to treat them for the debilitating disease, and actively denying some of them treatment. News of this spread and fueled the growing distrust of doctors and the medical industry. That fear has been handed down. African-American men may have greater issues with trust in our health care system and therefore are more likely to avoid it or not have the most productive encounters with health care providers. There are cultural differences in communication that affect the likelihood for Black men to understand the risk of prostate cancer and the benefit for various treatments when it can be diagnosed at its earliest stages. Data from the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor Study found that African-American men were less likely to receive radical prostatectomy compared with Caucasian men with similar disease characteristics. Therefore, ineffective shared decision making from subopti-
There are several known risk factors for developing prostate cancer. Advancing age is a factor with about 60 percent of prostate cancer being diagnosed in men older than 65 years of age. Race and ethnicity is a risk factor since African-American men develop prostate cancer at a rate that exceeds other populations. Although the reasons are unclear, geography plays a role. Prostate cancer is more prevalent in North America than it is in Central and South America or Asia. Family history plays a role. Men with multiple affected relatives, brothers of men diagnosed with prostate cancer, and men with relatives diagnosed at a young age all have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime
Managing Your Prostate Cancer
Before making any drastic changes, check in with your doctor about any overthe-counter supplements or herbal treatments to ensure they will not negatively impact your treatments. Maintaining a quality of life for men diagnosed with prostate cancer is a matter of choice. Maintaining an optimal weight helps improve virtually every health condition. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains can assist with weight loss. Increased physical activity improves both physical and emotional well-being, both during and after treatment for prostate cancer.
Nutritional Impact
In addition, to the dietary recommendations, the ability to improve outcome related to prostate cancer and overall health is positively influenced by decreasing obesity and increasing exercise. Assessment of Vitamin D status and treatment of Vitamin D deficiency may be helpful to achieve good outcomes from prostate cancer. Although it sounds hokey, optimizing healthy diet and exercise truly are important, along with the use of PSA and digital rectal exam on regular basis beginning as early as age 40 for Black men. Lifestyle issues including smoking increase the risk of developing prostate cancer, which has led to a higher incidence in Black men than in white men. Vigorous exercise does decrease the risk of prostate cancer incidence, but only in those men over age 65. Final advice: Eat healthy, exercise, and see doctor for annual check-ups and specific exams. www.chicagodefender.com
