Signs of Economic Progress in Bronzeville, Englewood

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Staff Writer The changes that have occurred throughout our Chicago neighborhoods are more evident in the economic developments of the South Side Englewood and Bronzeville communities. In a time where the homicide count vibrates throughout the city and African-American bodies lie lifeless on concrete, surrounded by yellow tape, the backdrops of our neighborhoods receive a bad rep. Since the announcement of Whole Foods’ commitment to build its grocery store on the corner of 63rd St. and Halsted — one of the busiest intersections on the South Side — questions arose on how this would go down. Critics thought the grocery franchise — known for its organic and high-end products — would price out residents in the neighborhood. It is no secret that the Englewood community has battled its share of loss in business development. Once a thriving shopping and small-business district, the 63rd St. corridor featured clothing and shoe retailers, cleaners, tailors, beauty and barbershops over the past five decades. The City of Chicago Colleges expanded the Kennedy-King College campus in their attempt to revitalize the area. On Sept. 29, the campus officially welcomed a new neighbor to the corner — Whole Foods, along with a brand new Starbucks that had opened its doors. The $20 million shopping complex, known as “Englewood Square,” also includes the Oak Street Health clinic, and a soon-to-be-open Chipotle. The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together the result of several community organizations working closely with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Managing Partner of DL3 Realty, Leon Walker; Whole Foods CEO, Walter Robb; Starbucks Executive VP of Public Affairs, Vivek Varma, and other key public officials — Congressman Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), and Deputy Mayor Andrea Zopp. A bronze statue of the late Ald. Joann Thompson of the 18th Ward was unveiled to attendees with family members standing by. Ald. Toni Foulkes acknowledged Thompson’s early commitment of supporting the grocery retail development. Whole Foods opened Sept. 29 at 63rd and Halsted. Leon Walker played a major role in bringing the complex to the community. Raised in Chicago and the son of schoolteachers, he sought the necessity to rebuild what was considered at one time a burgeoning community of wonderful Black businesses. This undertaking had significant meaning to Walker, whose mother was a graduate of Englewood High School and whose father was the founder of the Children’s Developmental Institute. “I grew up on the South Side of Chicago when Black businesses were prevalent. We were in every area. We had carpet stores and gas stations, tire companies, insurance and construction companies. Not just primary care and child care — things that we are mostly focused on these days. We were most broader and deeper in terms of the number of businesses that were present in our com-

munity,” he said. Walker, a graduate of the University of Chicago, earning his degree in law and business, moved to Los Angeles to work for the largest real estate investment firm, JLL. After the death of his father in 2000, the successful businessman moved back to his hometown to help his family and build his business in familiar territory. He noticed the stark difference in economic depletion in our neighborhood since his childhood. “I drove down every one of our major corridors — basically they’re bombed out. They were lighted, depressed, underinvested, disinvested.” He said before the 2008 recession hit, major streets that connected small business communities such as King Drive, Halsted, Ashland, Cottage Grove and Western also had responsible property owners within a stone’s throw. “There was an unmet need, there was an unmet demand. Our people are valuable, they’re alive and this community matters. To try to get the critical and quality services that everyone wants became my passion and mission.”

Bronzeville Developments

Just a little under five miles going northeast of Englewood is the community of Bronzeville — rich with African-American history. A brand new building showcasing the Mariano’s name greets travelers driving along 39th Street and King Drive. The 74, 000-square-foot store dons a unique design featuring an artistic screen wall honoring some of Bronzeville’s famous residents like journalist Ida B. Wells, auBob Mariano tasting a sample of a vendor’s cuisine. 02 October 05 - 11, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Slated to open Oct. 11, Mariano’s Food Market sits on the former site of the Ida B. Wells Housing project, which was demolished from 2002 to the final buildings in 2011, under former Mayor Richard M. Daley. Since then, the land has stood empty with several proposals for developments. Bronzeville has experienced a considerable spike in real estate value, with the community having close proximity to the McCormick Place and flourishing lakefront — the neighborhood is gradually undergoing a cosmetic change. So much has gone into making this happen, and so many facets of the community have been involved that it has to be viewed as a community effort. Blacks have been involved in every step of the process. As a global financier and philanthropist, he says it’s important for residents in their communities to hold on to their property. “To all property owners in Bronzeville and other places that are hanging on — hang on to those assets because they are very valuable and they will be two or three times as valuable as time goes on. The biggest issue of our community is that people of color do not control or manage money.” He said Black-owned financial management firms such as Capri, Ariel Capital and Loop Capital oversee a small percentage of financial investments compared to larger firms. “We manage collectively a small, small percentage of the trillions of dollars that are out there under very large firms. If we all were worth $10 billion, you could rest assured that the South Side and the West Side would be a different place because, like those of the Jewish faith who support Israel, we as African-Americans should support our communities,” said Primo. Willie Wilson Raising $100,000 to Bail Out Inmates on Thanksgiving

Dr. Willie Wilson continues to be a generous giver to the community. By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer Willie Wilson is giving Cook County Jail inmates something to be thankful for this

Thanksgiving Day. The former Chicago mayoral candidate and businessman is raising over $100,000 for a massive bailout of Cook County Jail inmates charged with misdemeanors in his Thanksgiving Day Bailout Project. The Dr.

Willie Wilson’s foundation committed $50,000 to the project.

Willie Wilson Foundation has already committed $50,000 to this effort and is seeking additional partnerships and support. A hundred percent of funds will go directly to bailouts, the organization says. Wilson discussed the Bailout Project at

a press conference on Sept. 28 at Chicago Baptist Institute, at 5120 South King Drive, along with various churches, clergy, elected officials, and community groups.

PROTECT OUR LEGACY After the economy crashed, Barack Obama stood with us. We’ve created over 15 million new jobs since 2010, expanded health care to 20 million Americans, and defended our right to vote. Barack Obama accomplished a lot, but more needs to be done so we can keep moving forward. The Republicans have fought Barack Obama since Day One and have promised to destroy his legacy and move our country backwards. We’ve all fought too hard to let that happen. The next president will either build on Barack Obama’s legacy or tear it apart. On November 8th, vote for Democrats so we can keep this country moving forward.

We Can’t Afford to Lose Focus in This Election

E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor I’ve got to talk to you about this upcoming election: presidential, senatorial, Cook County state’s attorney, Illinois state comptroller and alderman. I don’t know about you, but this year’s election is crucial no matter the bizarre displays of dysfunctional and totally out-of-character behavior of the presidential candidates before the actual nominees for both parties were selected. The fact that there were 16 men, one Black and one woman who made up 17 in all, is in itself a historical phenomenon. What it said about the Republican Party spoke volumes. Historically, most parties have an idea who the front-runners for the presidential race are, but 2016 proved that the Republicans were all over the place in terms of its vision of America and what the individual for the job should represent, and what Republican philosophy he or she should embody. But the 2016 Republican presidential nomination race is indisputably the most important in a generation. Setting aside the fact that it’s been 12 long years since the last Republican presidential candidate won a general election, or the fact that the last two presidential candidates have been soundly defeated by the Democratic nominee, President Barack Obama, there are several added

incentives to win the 2016 presidential election. As Donald Trump emerged victor after the very dramatic display of poor sportsmanship from Republican opponent Ted Cruz, who displayed non-presidential behavior calling Trump all sorts of names — from liar to narcissist — and more to the Trumpster himself, displaying more and more that he too is even less fit to lead America anywhere but hell. The fallout was like walking a minefield when Republicans began to grovel with no place to go, no place to hide. Trump got worse, by refusing to support party members up for re-election like veteran Sen. John McCain, whom he had disrespected during his campaign for Republican presidential nominee, as well as Paul Ryan, current speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Trump’s behavior and total disregard for protocol and decorum prompted President Obama to publicly proclaim that Trump is unfit to be president and called on the leaders of the Republican Party to denounce him. It’s true white folks rally for their own. Both McCain and Ryan came back after winning their elections and threw their support behind their party man. Still, if you follow the money, most of the fat cats and deep-pocket contributors have not thrown their money behind Trump, and in their world money talks. Four years after Charles and David Koch's political network opened its bank accounts to promote Republican nominee Mitt Romney, it's now spending millions to save the Republicans' Senate majority from their presidential candidate. They have not given the Trump campaign any of their money because they don’t want to throw it away. We saw what a Republican-dominated Congress can do, so the Republicans are willing to bet on it. Right now, the Demo-

Letter to the Editor Let's Rededicate Ourselves to Children I would like to be clear, I love Black people. We are the most beautiful, resourceful, smart and adaptable people in the world. We can also be self-destructive and position ourselves behind the wrong leaders for the promise of money or power. Not all, but a lot more than there should be. Chicago and Back to School is a perfect example of what we can do together. I will focus on the positive because we as a people are missing the importance of seeking out the positive. I want to thank all the parents who accompanied their children to the first day of school no matter what grade. To the parents who met the new teachers, to the parents, grandparents and foster parents whose children arrived on time and in uniform or proper attire, with their hair cut or clean and neat. This makes the first day of school exciting for kids and sets a tone.

“Hair Salon” or”New Rims” money for back-to-school supplies, clothes and shoes for their children, Thank You! You are a great parent! You have given your children a glimpse of how they should act when they have their own kids. Most of our race knows how important an education is. Sometimes . . . it is the difference between life and death when gangs are involved. What a lot of us do not know is how closely our children watch what we do. If we are happy, they tend to be happy. If we are angry, our children will be angry, disagreeable, and fighters. If we read to them at night, our children will learn to read. If we speak to the teachers on a regular basis before they call us, the teachers take notice and sometimes take more of an interest in our children. These are positive baby steps we can take every day. First and foremost, we should find a happy reason for every child to wake up in the morning. Maybe the sun is shining. The car is running well, our children are doing well in school or found a smart student who can help them. We should keep our children busy. Always busy, study groups, soccer, football, basketball, baseball, something that uses their bodies. Not

ty done. Instead, we have to make sure that the president stays true to her promises. Make sure you communicate to your senators and congressmen what you want to happen. Remind them that if they don’t you will not vote them back into office. If you get that it’s a pyramid where the office of president is built upon the layers of brick beneath it, then you understand the importance of each governmental position’s ability to impact the top. So don’t even think about throwing your vote away by not voting or voting for someone other than the Republican or the Democratic candidate. If you don't vote, you don't get to complain.

because they are overweight, but because this helps them sleep better and will keep the mind sharp. Let’s dedicate 2017 to our Black children staying out of gangs because they are just too busy, too smart and too creative to waste their time. Let us stay on our politicians who say they want to stop crime. You can open all kinds of after-school free programs in churches, city and state facilities. Make it fun and educational for kids. Get our children out of the inner-city school rooms and give them fun to look forward to, and they will show up. Help the parents know about these events. There has to be help for the parents. Especially the ones who have no idea that they are hurting their children by calling them out of their name or repeating all the bad behaviors their parents practiced on them. Identify the children with addicted parents. That seems to be our new epidemic. We then have to put all of our energy (especially the churches and schools) into positive activities, programs and message for our children to hear and experience. If you want to cut off the head of the snake of gang violence, this could be a start. Make it unattractive to be a gang member. Take the anger away and replace it with curiosity for all the wonderful things being done in our world. Save our children one Back to School at a time. —Anonymous

FRONT PAGE JUMP munity, and if a community is about to go through a resurgence or development, you have to make sure that those businesses are propped up. There are ways to do that financially.” Does this lead to the question of escalated gentrification, where second-, thirdgeneration family households are priced out of their place of residence — to make room for potential non-Black property owners? Many Chicagoans are familiar with the facelift of East Humboldt Park, aka Wicker Park, aka Bucktown in the 1990s to Ukrainian Village/East Village’s shift to the less ethnic name — West Town. Now, most recently the Pilsen community — once filled with Mexican-owned restaurants, bodegas, botanicas — is being replaced with hipster lounges and performance venues. While the movement of this type of change-over is still a steady crawl in the Bronzeville community, the aftermath of gentrification worries longtime residents who are feeling the climbing property taxes. Walker says their goal is not to drive out long-time residents but admits Englewood’s attraction for development is great access, infrastructure, character housing and all the things that attract new development. “We focused on what is called ‘development without displacement’. Englewood is considered ‘good bones’ in the real estate industry. It was a great business intersection at one time, so we’re not

asking anyone to leave. What we’re trying to build is a viable and sustainable community for working families.” Having close to 200 new permanent jobs stem from the Englewood Square Shopping complex, developers want to attract residents to the area. The anticipation of a Mariano’s is a warm welcome to many strapped with the burden of driving 10-20 minutes to the nearest full-service grocery market or walking to the neighborhood liquor/convenience store — stepping through a cipher of corner hustlers. Businesses such as Mariano’s are taking the necessary steps to include Blackowned businesses from the construction to the vendor process to incorporating the visual art presence — showcasing the long history of Black history makers. The benefits go both ways — employment for residents, profitability for the Kroger-owned franchise. “They have been very meaningful, hosting several job fairs. To make sure they are getting people from the community to hire. Ultimately, they are going to benefit and profit from that.” As a resident and public official, Ald. King believes it’s important to have somebody in place who understands the process and promote inclusion, not exclusion of the process. “When people really understand the benefits of including a community — financially and socially — I think it makes for a better living space.”

Thirty-five minority-owned businesses are represented at Whole Foods. Economic Progress, continued from, Page 03

and addressing the need to fill our communities with more accessibility to similar retail resources that other communities benefit can be bittersweet. “Our communities suffer — period. Investment in our inner cities is critical whether it comes from government or a mall.” Community organizations, such as Resident Association of Greater Englewood‘s (R.A.G.E.) President Asiaha Butler, say it was a long and tedious effort to make sure everyone’s voice and input was heard and recognized. “We partnered with Whole Foods since the beginning and Whole City Foundation to help get grants back into the community to think about healthy food. We’re just looking forward to a long-term partnership from this day forward,” she said. She is pleased with the outcome and admits they still have a long way to go, but it must start with the residents who take action and take back their neighborhood. Recognizing not only African-American-owned and -operated contractors such as Ujamaa and Power and Sons who were responsible for building out the complex, but selecting vendors for the Whole Foods location was a significant goal. Currently, there are featured products and services from 35 minority-owned businesses at this location, a first entry for many entrepreneurs entering the retail world. Growing up in Englewood, owner of Rome’s Joy, Cliff Rome, says he is pleased www.chicagodefender.com

that the retail giant is carrying their signature brand, Peaches Coffee. Charmin Edwards, owner of Rocyalox, says, “There was nothing on the market when I started wearing braids, so out of aggravation, I pulled my phone charger out and wrapped my braids to twist my hair,” Edwards said. “We’re here and excited about the vision and dream to be in Whole Foods.” A similar launch for the Bronzeville Mariano’s is being planned as Mariano’s held a vendor fair a few weeks ago to greet and meet local businesses presenting their products for placement consideration. Ald. Sophia King has inherited the responsibility as the newly appointed councilwoman of the 4th Ward to work with Mariano’s. “They’ve had several meetings with those vendors and they are bringing them along.” She says there is a similar process, such as the one Whole Foods put in place for both the Englewood and Bronzeville locations. “They are being meaningful about the process and their respect of Bronzeville. You can see in the artwork. There’s a slower process, but it will be welcomed in the community as well as hiring people from the community.” Is this a fair process to meet the goals of economic re-investment in communities that lack opportunities of competition in predominantly white neighborhoods? Will existing businesses benefit from their new franchise neighbors?

Jamilah Lemieux on the Forefront of Content Innovation at Interactive One By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer If there’s one thing that Jamilah Lemieux knows, it’s good content. As Interactive One’s new VP of News and Men’s Programming, the digital guru is on the company’s front lines, creating strategy for content that reaches audiences. “I think the future is really bright,” Lemieux says. “Interactive One has done a phenomenal job of establishing itself as the leading online destination for African-American millennial audiences and African-American Generation X audiences, in particular. We really want to find that sweet spot between the two groups, and the sort of content that connects them to continue to serve our audience.” Since its 2008 launch, Interactive One has been the definitive digital platform for African-American and millennial audiences. The company reaches millions of users each month through its suite of online, mobile, social and content offerings at GlobalGrind, HelloBeautiful, News One, and TheUrbanDaily, as well as digital destinations for dozens of local radio stations and syndicated radio talent.

“I’m known for having a big personality and big ideas with the work that I did in my last company, so I just want everyone to know that I’m not coming in like a wrecking ball.” — Jamilah Lemieux Lemieux plans to continue to build on Interactive One’s burgeoning legacy with big ideas and efficient execution. “I’m known for having a big personality and big ideas with the work that I did in my last company, so I just want everyone to know that I’m not coming in like a wrecking ball,” Lemieux jokes. “I’m here to support and affirm the great work that’s already being done and find exciting, new and innovative ways to do even better work.” That great work, Lemieux says, is made easy with the help of her supportive team. About a month into her new role, she’s transitioning into her projects and the Interactive One office feels like home already. “Everyone has been really fantastic and Jamilah Lemieux is a vice president at Interactive One. supportive, and I’m just really happy,” she says. “It feels almost like family already, which I’m very excited about because I spent nearly five years at my last job, so this is a very big change.” Lemieux proved she’s no stranger to the digital space throughout her career as an editor, columnist, and social media savant. She led the reimagining of Ebony magazine’s website in 2012 and was later promoted to senior digital editor before becoming its senior editor for the print publication. In addition to her recognizable work at Ebony, Lemieux’s work has often appeared on a host of multimedia platforms, including Mic, Essence, the Nation, the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Guardian, Gawker, and her now-defunct, award-winning blog, The Beautiful Struggler. Now in her new role, she’s currently on the forefront of online editorial development of NewsOne and TheUrbanDaily, and has some innovative concepts lined up for the future of the brand’s editorial strategy, especially for Interactive One’s African-American male base — a group that has often been left out of media focuses as companies across the nation have rushed to embrace new trends set by female audiences. “I think it’s unfortunate that we’ve gone this long without seeing enough dedicated programming for Black male consumers — online, in print, and in other places,” Lemieux says. “It’s such a rich opportunity to serve a demographic that’s been content creators and conversation drivers, architects of style, fashion, and innovation.”

08 October 05 - 11, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Even as Black Americans continue to have an unprecedented impact in media, in culture, and across industries, content producers overall have failed to steer efforts toward creating editorial specifically for Black men. Lemieux says that she has something in store for this often overlooked group. “I can’t think of a more deserving group of consumers that are in need of something specifically geared toward them,” Lemieux says. “And I’m looking forward to working with editors and video producers to understand that audience and provide content for them that they deserve.” Lemieux’s passion doesn’t end there. As an advocate for racial equality, social justice, and LGBT rights and acceptance, she is often requested to appear on MSNBC, Huffington Post Live, and Al Jazeera America, or to speak on NPR, BBC, or CBC radio stations about the cultural issues affecting Black Americans. On social media, she’s become a voice that’s both well-heard and well-respected. Lemieux is a supporter of the truthful storytelling and although every advocate may not have the same platform as an opinion journalist, she says it doesn’t mean that you can’t affect change, but being responsible about the content you create is essential. “The internet has, in many ways, democratized who gets to be a writer and influential voice,” she says. “With that comes great responsibility. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective. The purpose of this document is to inform you of proposed changes to the Illinois Constitution and provide you with a brief explanation and a summary of the arguments in favor of and in opposition to the proposed amendment. Proposed changes in the existing constitutional amendment are indicated by underscoring all new matter and by crossing with a line all matter which is to be deleted. PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO ADD SECTION 11 TO ARTICLE IX OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE IX – REVENUE SECTION 11. TRANSPORTATION FUNDS (a) No moneys, including bond proceeds, derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to registration, title, or operation or use of vehicles, or related to the use of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or to fuels used for propelling vehicles, or derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes relating to any other transportation infrastructure or transportation operation, shall be expended for purposes other than as provided in subsections (b) and (c). (b) Transportation funds may be expended for the following: the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, including statutory refunds and adjustments provided in those laws; payment of highway obligations; costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation; and other statutory highway purposes. Transportation funds may also be expended for the State or local share of highway funds to match federal aid highway funds, and expenses of grade separation of highways and railroad crossings, including protection of at-grade highways and railroad crossings, and, with respect to local governments, other transportation purposes as authorized by law. (c) The costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation shall be limited to direct program expenses related to the following: the enforcement of traffic, railroad, and motor carrier laws; the safety of highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports; and the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, operation, and administration of highways, under any related provisions of law or any purpose related or incident to, including grade separation of highways and railroad crossings. The limitations to the costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation under this subsection (c) shall also include direct program expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of employees of the State’s transportation agency; the acquisition of land and the erection of buildings for highway purposes, including the acquisition of highway rights-of-way or for investigations to determine the reasonable anticipated future highway needs; and the making of surveys, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways. The expenses related to the construction and maintenance of flight strips and highways under this subsection (c) are for the purpose of providing access to military and naval reservations, defense-industries, defense-industry sites, and sources of raw materials, including the replacement of existing highways and highway connections shut off from general use at military and naval reservations, defense-industries, and defense-industry sites, or the purchase of rights-of-way. (d) None of the revenues described in subsection (a) of this Section shall, by transfer, offset, or otherwise, be diverted to any purpose other than those described in subsections (b) and (c) of this Section. (e) If the General Assembly appropriates funds for a mode of transportation not described in this Section, the General Assembly must provide for a dedicated source of funding. (f) Federal funds may be spent for any purposes authorized by federal law. EXPLANATION The proposed amendment adds a new Section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution that provides revenue generated from transportation related taxes and fees (referred to as “transportation funds”) shall be used exclusively for transportation related purposes. Transportation related taxes and fees include motor fuel taxes, vehicle registration fees, and other taxes and user fees dedicated to public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit (buses and rail), ports, or airports. Under the proposed amendment, transportation funds may be used by the State or local governments only for the following purposes: (1) costs related to administering transportation and vehicle laws, including public safety purposes and the payment of obligations such as bonds; (2) the State or local share necessary to secure federal funds or for local government transportation purposes as authorized by law; (3) the construction, reconstruction, improvement, repair, maintenance, and operation of highways, mass transit, and railroad crossings; (4) expenses related to workers’ compensation claims for death or injury of transportation agency employees; and (5) to purchase land for building highways or buildings for to be used for highway purposes. This new Section is a limitation on the power of the General Assembly or a unit of local government to use, divert, or transfer transportation funds for a purpose other than transportation. It does not, and is not intended to, impact or change the way in which the State and local governments use sales taxes, including the sales and excise tax on motor fuel, or alter home rule powers granted under this Constitution. It does not seek to change the way in which the State funds programs administered by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation, and operations by the Illinois State Police directly dedicated to the safety of roads, or entities or programs funded by units of local government. Further, the Section does not impact the expenditure of federal funds, which may be spent for any purpose authorized by federal law. FORM OF BALLOT Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution Explanation of Amendment The proposed amendment adds a new section to the Revenue Article of the Illinois Constitution. The proposed amendment provides that no moneys derived from taxes, fees, excises, or license taxes, relating to registration, titles, operation, or use of vehicles or public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, or airports, or motor fuels, including bond proceeds, shall be expended for other than costs of administering laws related to vehicles and transportation, costs for construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair, and betterment of public highways, roads, streets, bridges, mass transit, intercity passenger rail, ports, airports, or other forms of transportation, and other statutory highway purposes, including the State or local share to match federal aid highway funds. BUSINESS

Chicago Executives Talk the Business of Black Wealth at the Titans of Industry By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer Titans of Industry — a wealth and wisdom speaker series — came to Chicago on Wednesday, bringing out the city’s great business minds for a discussion on building and maintaining long-term wealth in the Black community. Powered by Real Times Media and sponsored by Prudential, the event featured Prudential vice president of financial reporting Maurice Kuykendoll, Global Automotive Alliance chairman and CEO William F. Pickard, financial strategist and Xerox corporate controller Ingrid L. Morris, McLaurin Development Partners owner Zeb McLaurin, and Chicago Urban League president and CEO Shari Runner. The series came to Chicago after having much success in Detroit, Charlotte, Houston, Atlanta, and at Prudential’s headquarters in Newark. Emmy award-winning journalist Ed Gordon moderated the discussion ranging from success in corporate America, entrepreneurial endeavors, community support, personal and business financial goals, and mentorship. A common thread throughout discussion topics was the importance of making financial planning a priority. Studies show that poor planning can be a serious detriment to a family’s financial position. A recent Prudential study shows that although African-Americans are optimistic about their finances, failure to consistently plan for the future can come into play. Not taking advantage of financial and investment tools that help with retirement planning negatively affects long-term wealth creation. Some of this avoidance comes from not having adequate knowledge of how to plan. One in five survey respondents gave themselves a grade of “F” on their knowledge of investing, planning for wealth transfer or leaving money to the next generation, and saving or investing for a child’s education. That kind of knowledge is key to financial wealth, experts say, but is not always passed on when parents don’t have a strong hold on financial planning concepts, leaving future generations to make similar mistakes.

A Change in Mindset

“Not all of the bad decisions are because people want to be broke,” Kuykendoll said. “I don’t know a lot of people that just want to be broke, but sometimes those tools aren’t there naturally.” Pickard said that the greatest change to the Black community will come from a change in mindset, making finances a priority. “Our greatest challenge is our mindset. We must understand that the business of America is business,” Pickard said. “We’re buying what we want and begging for what we need.” Another discussion topic surrounded the importance of supporting Black businesses to build up community economies.

Kuykendoll suggested Black Americans institute an economic policy that countries use to become more financially dependent. “One of the ways that lots of countries develop is called import substitution: You take something that you used to have to spend a lot of money for and they start developing it themselves internally,” Kuykendoll said. “We all have that opportunity in the decisions that we make and in the purchases that we do to support Black business.” For those who are or will become business owners, handling debt is an important skill for longevity in business.

12 October 05 - 11, 2016 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

“If you’re going to become an entrepreneur, you have to learn how to manage debt,” McLaurin said. “You are not in business if you don’t have some of it, so you can’t be afraid of it. It’s how you deal with it.” Once you reach a level of success, Morris said, keeping your proverbial seat at the table comes from knowing the numbers in business. “Know the numbers, understand the risk, quantify it,” Morris said. “So that when you are in a position where you get access, you know your numbers because that is what’s going to keep you in the room, once you get in there.”

Although the road to wealth varies, Runner said that the methodology to get there remains the same. “Wealth creation takes on many forms,” Runner said. “And we have to focus on that as a community. We’re not all entrepreneurs, we’re not all corporate citizens, we’re not all in government business, but we all have a passion and the ability to lift our community up. We have to be conscious of it so we can pass it along to the next generation and stop the cycle of poverty.” To get started on your road to building financial wealth, contact a Prudential representative at www.prudential.com. www.chicagodefender.com

ENTERTAINMENT

Birth of a Nation: Nate Parker Speaks Candidly By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor All the “chickens have come to home to roost” as the use of technology has reflected back to the world the ugliness of our American history. What some may view as a resistance to arrest by an unarmed Black person — guns drawn and pointed by law enforcement — many people of color understand the history behind the blatant disregard for Black lives. To know the past is to understand the present, and to sweep our history under the rug is a travesty. Actor and director Nate Parker has labored for the past 10 years to bring a part of American history that is not pretty or glamourous to the big screen through Birth of a Nation. Fox Searchlight backed the $17.5 million independent film — the most a movie studio has paid for at Sundance. The silent drama by early filmmaker D.W. Griffith in 1910 ignited a wave of racism and doormat hate that further divided the country between white and Black Americans. Parker’s Birth of a Nation depicts a realistic insight of Nat Turner — a Missouri slave who is taught to read by his slave owner’s wife. In adulthood Turner becomes a preacher, and later used by his owner to preach to neighboring plantations in order to contain rebellious slaves for his financial gain. Soon after Turner’s wife, Cherry, played by Aja Naomi King, is gang-raped and beaten badly by white slave hunters — the abuse leads to one of the bloodiest slave rebellions in our African-American history. Filmmaker Parker had no idea he was closer to this historic piece of history — a native of Missouri himself. “I grew up 42 miles east of South Hamden County where this revolt happened. Never once did I hear Nat Turner’s name uttered. So when I became an adult and learned about him and learned ironically, he grew up near my neighborhood. I learned about what he did and why he did it. His discipline, his obedience, his faith — he became my hero instantly,” he said. A Sundance fellow, studying film and also working as an actor — he was drawn to Turner’s real-life story. His screenplay is in no way the same as the original Griffith film. “Above so many other things, it inspired white supremacy as a means of self-preservation. But it’s also the greatest cause of our disenfranchisement during the time of Reconstruction,” Parker explains. “We, as Black people, had started to have representation from the local to the national level. His film inspired real murder, it inspired real terrorism against our people. We saw the Klan grow from nothing to 4 million in a year.” The film stars Nate Parker, Armie Hammer, Mark Boone Jr., Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, www.chicagodefender.com

“Birth of a Nation,” a film about the Nat Turner revolt, has been a 10-year project for Nate Parker. Gabrielle Union with Penelope Ann Miller and Jackie Earle Haley — a stellar and diverse ensemble of actors who carry the raw emotion that is revealed in the story. “What I want to do is show not through dialogue and explanation but allow the audience member to be a fly on the wall and to experience the absolute desolation that comes with this type of bondage and feeling of being left inhuman.” Parker and the cast have traveled around the country at pre-screenings, press junkets and conducting in-depth discussion revolving around the deep scars of slavery that is still evident several generations later. “We’re tired of being invisible. Ralph Ellison says, ‘When someone feels invisible, sometimes they’ll lash out to let the world know they’re there.’ I think this is a lashing out, a desperate attempt to say we are here, we’ve been here and our story matters.” He admits the journey to bringing Birth of a Nation in production and distribution was a long and tedious one when so many outlets are available for young filmmakers. Films such as Django Unchained, 12 Years A Slave and Roots (2016 miniseries) is opening up the dialogue of discussion and reaching a younger demographic while encouraging others to share their history. “It’s starting to inspire others to tell their stories that are non-African-American. Another thing it’s doing, by bringing these stories up, it’s causing Americans to look at their identity and to ask themselves who we are — not who do we project ourselves to be but who we are. We’re forcing Americans to deal with the traumas that were incurred back during the time of slavery.” Despite the backlash of Parker’s past — a rape allegation that was brought against him and a Penn State University roommate in 1997 — Parker was cleared of the charges and, later, both men have moved on to have successful film careers.

As the film hits theaters nationwide Oct. 7, he shares his sentiments with the Chicago Defender. “Anyone out there that says, I have a story to tell or something that needs to

be articulated or something that the Lord has put on my soul. Just take the steps and do it. The greatest thing to create a real change is to bring a situation to the forefront or conscience of the world.”

Bronzeville: The Musical Back by popular demand, the Mahdi Theatre Company Presents Chicago’s Bronzeville The Musical at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, at 915 E 60th St., Chicago, IL on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 3:30 p.m. matinee. The musical tells the story of the Great Migration instigated by Chicago Defender founder and publisher, Robert Sengstacke Abbott, and how this powerful undertaking trail-blazed and gave birth to the urban thriving Bronzeville community on Chicago’s South Side. This fabulous exhibition of talent written and directed by Margaret Mahdi is reflective of Broadway, Vegas and highlights of the famed Harlem Cotton Club, capturing the historical timeline that celebrates the great migration that birthed the Black metropolis known as Bronzeville. The thought-provoking musical tells the story common to many, depicting testimonials, laughter, tears and voices of great courage and intention representing the resilient spirit of people in pursuit of self-determination. It peers into the circumstances, the psyche and aspirations of Blacks who left the South at the urging of Abbott, who wrote scathing editorials pushing the people to start a life of possibility up north. The audience is drawn into the stories of these people who chose to no longer accept the blatant horror of the ongoing terror based around hatred and

Other notables that appear in the musical are Lorraine Hansberry, Langston Hughes, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lena Horne, Ida B. HEALTH

Homeostasis in The Human Body By Eleana Elan Defender Contributing Writer

Black America Donna Battle Pierce Syndicated Columnist Describing fresh kale as a “non-heading member of the cabbage family” in The Food Lover’s Companion by Sharon Tyler Herbst, the culinary reference expert writes about her preference for the deep green variety, most frequently available in the U.S. Herbst describes the “gorgeous shades of lavender, purple and celadon green,” as ornamental kale, not intended for delicious salads. My friends and I were startled when the boring greens we grew up passing around family tables suddenly became trendy several years ago. We were similarly thrown off balance, when the Mason jars our grandmothers once used for preserving everything we considered “boring” from pickles and canned peaches suddenly became cool. Turns out this sturdy container, described last year in the Atlantic Magazine as possessing “an enticing aura of thrift, preservation, and personal labor” in The Mason Jar, Reborn by Ariana Kelly, was created in 1858 by John Landis Mason as a step toward better food preservation and canning. Kale makes a sturdy base for this sealed “lunch on the go.” Then feel free to use a variety of ingredients to layer in Mason jars, for a perfect snack or meal at school or the office. Transport the dressing in a resealable food storage container, or feel free to add it first at the bottom of the jar. To enjoy this delightful combination of flavors and textures, toss ingredients lightly in the jar, just as you would for a layered salad, or shake the ingredients into a bowl before adding dressing. Each time I layer this Mason jar kale salad, I remember my maternal grandmother’s “I-toldyou-so-smile” and reminder, “stick around long enough, and everything old becomes new.” If adding dressing to the jar (instead of serving on the side) equally divide the dressing among four pint-size Mason jars. Add kale, tomatoes, Cheese, croutons, peppers, mush-

The human body is the most amazing technology ever created. And different from man-made artificial intelligence, the human body is an incredible self-correcting machine that wants to maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, and the body continuously works toward accomplishing that state. After recognizing that I was no longer in charge of what my body was doing, it seemed that the more I improved my diet and ate less the more weight I gained. I was perplexed. I attempted those previous actions that had worked in my life like fasting, eating once a day, and trying various diets. My weight fluctuated up and down and most recently, more up than down, so finally I went to the doctor. I was asked to keep a diary of my eating and exercise habits for 14 days. From that it was determined that I did not eat enough and so my body was in protection mode thinking I was starving. So it converted the food I consumed into fat. To change that, I had to increase my meals to five meals a day to establish homeostasis. I was told that in doing so my body would reverse its actions and I would lose weight. It was that simple. The human body is fashioned to regulate its internal environment in response to fluctuations to the external environment to maintain homeostasis and optimal health. The body works to maintain homeostasis through the liver, kidney, and brain function (hypothalamus, the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system). The liver has numerous jobs, like making proteins, but its main job is to filter harmful substances ingested into the body from the blood. These substances can disrupt blood flow and nutrient absorption and delivery, and can disrupt any and every one of the body’s organs and functions. The kidneys regulate salt, iron, and water levels in the blood. They re-absorb helpful substances back into the blood, regulate blood pH, and the excretion of urea and other wastes from the body. The brain works to maintain homeostasis in the human body through regulating: •Fluid matrix of the body (fluid volume regulation, osmoregulation) •Gas exchange with the environment (regulation of airway resistance and the pulmonary circulation)

“The body uses nutrients from foods we eat to replenish elements and compounds the body needs to maintain homeostasis.” •Ingestion and digestion of nutrients (regulation of the gastrointestinal tract, control of energy balance) •Transport of gases, nutrients and other substances throughout the body to supply organs, including the brain to maintain consciousness (regulation of blood flow and blood pressure by the cardiovascular regulation) •Excretion of substances (disposal of waste) •Body temperature (thermoregulation) •Reproductive behavior (mechanics of sexual organs) •Defensive behaviors •Body recovery (control of circadian rhythms, of sleep and wakefulness) •Development and maintenance of body organs and tissues •Body protection at the cellular and systems level (regulation of inflammatory processes, control of the immune system) The body uses nutrients from foods we eat to replenish elements and compounds the body needs to maintain homeostasis, and to keep all of its organs and functions operating at optimal levels. For example, the body takes calcium from the food we eat and uses it to maintain strong bones, uses carbohydrates to fuel cell metabolism, and uses antioxidants to regulate free radicals to keep cells young. When we don’t supply the body with enough of the nutrients it needs, don’t supply the body with nutrients in the proper ratios that plant food supply, and when we overwhelm the body with chemicals that are foreign to it, the body will have a difficult time maintaining homeostasis, and pathogens and carcinogens will overwhelm the body and cause illness. The takeaway is that it is important to feed/fuel your body with the required nutrition needed for the body to run at its optimum health. www.chicagodefender.com

Assessing Your Taxes on Capital Gains and Losses By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer When you sell a capital asset, the sale normally results in a capital gain or loss. A capital asset includes most property you own for personal use or own as an investment. Here are some facts that you should know about capital gains and losses. Capital assets include property such as your home or car, as well as investment property, such as stocks and bonds. A capital gain or loss is the difference between your basis and the amount you get when you sell an asset. Your basis is usually what you paid for the asset. You must include all capital gains in your income and you may be subject to the Net Investment Income Tax if your income is above certain amounts. The rate of this tax is 3.8 percent. You can deduct capital losses on the sale of investment property. You cannot deduct losses on the sale of property that you hold for personal use. If your capital losses are more than your capital gains, you can deduct the difference as a loss on your tax return. This loss is limited to $3,000 per year, or $1,500 if you are married and file a separate return.

“Almost everything you own and use for personal or investment purposes is a capital asset.” If your total net capital loss is more than the limit you can deduct, you can carry it over to next year’s tax return. Capital gains and losses are treated as either long-term or short-term, depending on how long you held the property. If you held it for one year or less, the gain or loss is short-term. If your long-term gains are

more than your long-term losses, the difference between the two is a net long-term capital gain. If your net long-term capital gain is more than your net short-term capital loss, you have a net capital gain. To determine how long you held an asset, count from the day after you acquired the asset up to and including the day you sold it.

The tax rate on a net capital gain usually depends on your income. The maximum tax rate on a net capital gain is 20 percent. However, for most taxpayers a zero or 15 percent rate will apply. A 25 or 28 percent tax rate can also apply to certain types of net capital gain. You often will need to file Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets, with your federal tax return to report your gains and losses. You also need to file Schedule D, Capital Gains and Losses, with your tax return. Almost everything you own and use for personal or investment purposes is a capital asset. Losses from the sale of personal-use property, such as your car or home, are not tax deductible. If you have a taxable capital gain, you may be required to make estimated tax payments. Just remember, for every tax problem there is a solution. Constant W. Watson III, CPA, CTRS, is both a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist. SUBURBAN NEWS

Ford Heights Owes $1.8 Million to Chicago Heights for Water Bill The village of Ford Heights, America’s poorest suburb, does not have a bank, grocery store, library, high school, or even its own police department. Earlier in September, Mayor David Gonzalez of Chicago Heights announced that in light of a 1.8 million debt accrued based on the non-payment of its water bills dating back to 2009, the city of Chicago Heights would cease proving water to Ford Heights unless the issue of payment is quickly resolved. Gonzalez addressed Ford Height residents, saying, “I do not believe the problem over the current water crisis lies with you, the residents. I believe most of you are paying your bills. . . . But we are not receiving this money from your village government, and it is becoming a serious drain on our city. Gonzalez’s statement fuels residents’ suspicions that mismanagement of funds was the cause of their village’s threat of no water. If it’s true, members of the Concerned Citizens of Ford Heights (CCFH) fear that its corruption coupled with the village’s decision to raise monthly water rates from $45/2000 gallons ($95 with sewer fee). Chicago Heights sells water to three additional communities — Glenwood, Thornton, and South Chicago Heights — at a rate of $16 to $24/2000 gallons. To its own residents water is sold at about $19/2000 gallons. Robbins ($62 flat rate) is the only community that has comparable rates to Ford Heights, and is known for its corruption scandals.

Help Feed Hungry in South Suburbs Fall is here and winter is on the way, so this is the perfect time to give or make a commitment to give to the LBD Enterprises Outreach Services, which was founded in 1974 by Loquator B. Dinkins to feed hungry people in the south suburbs. She was inspired after noticing that people were searching through the dumpster out back of her restaurant in Harvey for discarded food. Ms. D, as she is affectionately referred to, began inviting those hungry folks in for a meal after the restaurant closed for the day. The word began to spread throughout the community and soon after she was operating a food pantry out of her home on Maple Lane in Markham. Today LBD Enterprises is at 16710 S. Richmond Street, Unit 4 in Hazel Crest, Ill. Gearing up for the holidays, Ms. D wants to remind the public that the families and children she serves are always in need. America demands so much of parents to do for their children, beginning with providing them food, clothing and shelter, which many cannot. So with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas on the way they are pressured to provide their children with what is expected of them. Ms. D says, “Its important what I do because the people who are in need are ignored by so many. I realize the significance of helping desperate people, who, if not helped, often turn to crime. My efforts are meant to assist people daily, not just for special holidays. We feed 300 people a week.” In its 42-year history, LBD Enterprises has partnered with many different organizations, including the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program and Larry Jones’ Feed the Children Mission.

The one constant, however, has been the reliance on the generosity of the people of Chicagoland to support Ms, Dinkins’ mission to feed hungry children and their families. Whenever the community has needed outside help, good Samaritans of every race and creed have come to LBD’s aid in time of trouble to keep LBD from having to close its doors. Today, LBD Enterprises/South Suburban Toys for Kids continues to feed the hungry. When food stores allow, over 5,600 people a month depend on them for sustenance. Unlike many other food pantries, LBD does not turn away needy people because of their Zip code. You can make donations online: http://www.lbdenterprises.org/d_online.html, or you can call 708-5664407 or 708-743-2882.

Harvey Woman Narrowly Escapes Abduction Harvey resident Brittany Mays barely escaped being a victim of a violent home invasion and/or abduction over the weekend. According to police, the offender may be connected to another crime. Brittany shared with ABC, “It just keeps replaying in my mind. It is very, very scary.” She was walking her Yorkie around 5 a.m. Saturday when her dog began to act strangely. Shortly thereafter, she could see a strange man in her peripheral vision lurking on the side of her home. According to police, Brittany explained that she picked up her pace and by the time she was about to close and lock her door, near 157th Street and South Ashland Avenue, the man had run up behind with a gun. She acted quickly to slam and lock the door, barely escaping the attack as the man held the gun in one hand and tried to open the door. Last Wednesday, Harvey police reported that a female resident of Harvey had been kidnapped in Chicago and eventually dumped near where Brittany Mays’ interrupted home invasion took place. The woman was not hurt. Mays said she is thankful that she escaped the close call that was captured by her home-security cameras. Mays said, “I’m very glad because now we were able to give police some type of evidence so we can track him down, because they are saying this happened to another young lady. I am not saying this is the same person or if he has any involvement, but if it is, then I am glad I can help.” Surveillance video from a camera on the building shows a white van suspiciously pulling back and forth in front of the residence. It also captured the suspect entering the passenger side of a van and fleeing after failing to gain entry. Harvey and Chicago police are investigating the cases that may be related and report that they are looking for at least two suspects in connection to the attempted abduction, with one being the getaway driver. In each case, at least two people were involved, but vans used in the crimes were different colors. Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Harvey police at 708.331.2131.

Exoneration Project Helps Innocent Chicago Heights Man Win $15M Settlement By Arionne Nettles Defender Staff Writer The Exoneration Project at the University of Chicago Law School helped a wrongfully convicted man receive $15 million for his 20 years of imprisonment — one of the largest settlements of its kind in Illinois history. Rodell Sanders, 51, spent more than 20 years of his 80year sentence. He was convicted of murder, attempted murder, and robbery charges after being accused of ordering the shooting of 19-year-old Stacy Armstrong and 23-year-old Phillip Atkins in a 1993 incident. There was no physical or forensic evidence linking Sanders to the crimes, but two witnesses falsely identified Sanders. Sanders and his attorneys said in their lawsuit that the misidentifications were the result of “manipulations and bribes by members of the city of Chicago Heights’ infamously corrupt police department.” Testimony from Armstrong, the surviving victim, and Germaine Haslett, an FBI and Chicago Heights police informant, were both instrumental in Sanders’ 1995 conviction, according to the National Registry of Exoneration. The registry says that Armstrong initially gave a description of the shooter that did not match Sanders, but that police trimmed his photo to conceal his height and weight. Germaine Haslett, whose girlfriend later signed a sworn statement that he was behind the shooting, received thousands of dollars from the FBI for his cooperation and testimony against Sanders. Using law books and the Freedom of Information Act, Sanders got his convictions overturned before later receiving settlement assistance from the Exoneration Project — a free legal clinic at the University of Chicago Law School dedicated to representation of the wrongfully convicted. His attorneys through the project were Russell Ainsworth and Elliot Slosar of Loevy & Loevy, which is the firm that fought for the release of the dashcam video in the Laquan McDonald case. It has won more multimillion-dollar jury verdicts than any other civil rights law firm in the country.

Wrongful Convictions Prevalent Ainsworth says that wrongful convictions occur more than the public may realize, and that may be true here at home. Illinois had 54, the most exonerations of any other state between 1989 and 2012. In 2014 when Sanders’ conviction was overturned, Illinois was third and has been in the top three for the past three years. “We can learn from wrongful convictions,” Ainsworth said. “That same pattern will continue until we hold rogue police officers accountable for their actions.” Wrongful convictions affect more than just those imprisoned. Sanders was imprisoned when his oldest daughter was 13 years old, and his youngest daughter was not yet born. And as a result of his wrongful imprisonment, he missed most of their childhood years. “Although Mr. Sanders has been acquitted of all the false charges lodged by defendants, he will never regain the lost decades of his life,” the lawsuit said. Because of the impact of wrongful convictions, Ainsworth says it’s important that claims be heard. “It’s important that all meritorious claims get a fair hearing,” Ainsworth said. “Wrongful convictions do happen.” Those who were found guilty of crimes they did not commit can apply for their case to be reviewed by the Exoneration Project at www.exonerationproject.org. www.chicagodefender.com
