Dr. Willie Wilson (center) stands with Cook County Jail detainees whose bail he paid. (Photo by John Alexander) By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer As we prepare for the tradition of Thanksgiving and Christmas the spirit of giving fills the air. Thousands of detainees in our jail system will not have the privilege of sharing the holidays with their families and friends. For decades, the criminal justice system has gone under scrutiny for its unbalanced bail system. Non-violent crimes and misdemeanors are often set with bails that don’t match the crime or, worse, people detained months without the ability to pay. The lasting impact on poor people is catastrophic, contributing to rising numbers in jail while detainees await trial. Dr. Willie Wilson, a Chicago-area businessman, has built several successful businesses over the last three decades. His deep ties in the Black community are often associated with his philanthropic efforts with many churches, often donating $800,000 to $1 million a year. The executive producer of the long-running Gospel television program “Singsation,” he is a familiar face and voice with its loyal Sunday morning viewers. In 2014, he entered the Chicago mayoral race, running against incumbent Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The millionaire invested a little over $2 million of his own money, and although he didn’t win the primary, he received 10.66 percent of the vote. Wilson is considered one of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s respected allies. In 2015, he threw his hat into the ring to run for U.S. president, which was never acknowledged by the national Democratic party and therefore didn’t receive much coverage.

During his campaign runs, a major concern was criminal-justice reform and how the system is unbalanced toward African-Americans and Latinos. As he talked to more and more people dealing with similar problems from high bail bonds for misdemeanor crimes to detainees being held months, unable to make bail, sometimes leading to job and home loss, he felt he had to do something.

Taking Matters Into His Own Hands As a private citizen, he puts his money where his mouth is. He delved into his pocket and began the process of identifying who some of the individuals were to assist and bail them out. “When I was running for president and also when I ran for mayor, we were talking about prison reform. So I did commercial spots for prison reforms when I was around the country campaigning for the presidency. We’re always talking about it, but who’s doing anything about it? I look at my own self. I didn’t want to be like anybody else and just talk. I went in my pocket and started to do it.” Since his initial decision to begin the process, Wilson reached out to the Cook County sheriff’s office and received a list of detainees who had small bonds. “We went through that list and selected at random who gets out. We don’t know any of them — we check off the names. From there, if they show up for the court date, we get 90 percent of that money back. Once we get it back, we will reinvest it to get more detainees out,” he said. Wilson hopes to help bail out 1,0002,000 people in 2017. He says this experience didn’t start here.

The effects of having people close to you was a familiar occurrence within his family. “We had two kids that went to Cook County Jail. Both of them went in there with an attitude, they came out with an attitude 10 times worse. One of them came out so bitter, later he was killed — my 20-year-old son,” he recounts. “So jail changes you if you come out hard. Normally, these young men and ladies have no idea what they’re getting into when they get to jail. Some end up in there hard, some end up getting raped, some beat up, some can’t handle it and their mind is crippled. I don’t think that any human being could be subjected to that.”

The Legislative Process

He is not alone in his fight to bring awareness to the forefront. Dr. Wilson has enlisted the support of over 100 churches, at least 10 non-profit organizations and several public officials — including Illinois State Representatives Elgie R. Sims Jr. (34th District) and La Shawn K. Ford (8th District). Currently, the group is working on a bill to present to the state legislature to eliminate lengthy incarceration for non-violent and misdemeanor cases in jails across the state. He’s also enlisted the help of Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin, who is helping to write the bill and has met with Cook County Chief Judge Tim Evans on discussing next steps. Dr. Wilson says, “Also, we met with the governor’s people. Three weeks ago, I met with Gov. Rauner — one on one. He is going to support the bill we’re putting together now, but it’s just talk for now.” State Rep. Ford believes this move by continued on page 7

Cook County’s Cash-Bond System Under Fire By Erick Johnson Defender Staff Writer

Jermaine Robinson has spent the past four years behind bars. The 25-year-old could have been released from jail in 2012 if he had $7,500, but neither Robinson nor his family had the cash to set him free. So for the next four years, Robinson would be among many inmates languishing in Cook County Jail where some of its twenty-something-old occupants have been incarcerated since they were teenagers. For Robinson, life behind bars has destroyed his dreams in the recording industry. In 2012 he was studying music management at Columbia College while working as a janitor at a Boys & Girls Club nearby. A felon who started dealing with cocaine at age 17, Robinson was putting his life back together when on June 25, 2012, his comeback ended with a devastating arrest. At a house in Washington Park, Robinson was handcuffed and taken to jail after police said they saw him entering his girlfriend’s home with a revolver. Robinson and two other men were arrested and taken into custody. Robinson said he knew nothing about the gun, but police locked him up anyway. Today, Robinson remains in jail, his future uncertain as days drag on and on. High cash bond amounts is a problem that affects numerous inmates in Cook County’s jail system. Many of these inmates are poor Black males who have spent years in jail because they have no money to get out. As they await trial for various crimes, they are already guilty for being unable to afford high bail amounts that separate the haves and the have-nots. While more affluent inmates get out of jail hours or days after they were arrested, inmates with little money or resources are forced to languish in the county jail for much longer because of the bottom line.

grounds have the money to post bail and return to the streets before they are tried in court. Dart proposes a new system where the judge would decide whether a defendant should be set free before they stand trial. The judge would base his decision on intensive background information by the court’s staff. In the current system, judges set bail for individuals charged with crimes. For defendants to get out of jail, they must pay 10 percent of that amount. It’s a system that state officials say ensures that the defendant will show up for court. Critics have argued that some judges set bail so high that even a small percentage of that is still too much for defendants. Cook County officials said numerous defendants remain in jail for years because they cannot pay to get out. Many of these defendants remain separated from loved ones, lose jobs and accumulate debt in jail. Dart believes the system hurts people charged with minor crimes. He said more room is needed for defendants who are accused of committing more serious, violent acts. According to sources, 1,000 Cook County inmates have been awaiting trial for more than two years. In more extreme cases, some defendants have been behind bars for eight years. According to the study, 93 percent of these inmates are minorities. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, along with Dart, have pushed judges to set lower bonds and expand electronic monitoring of defendants who wear special bands while at home. During her annual luncheon at the Chicago Renaissance Hotel in May, Preckwinkle said Cook County’s jail population in the past several years dropped from 10,000 to 7,500 inmates. She said only 7 percent of the inmates are actually serving a sentence. She also said 93 percent of inmates are awaiting trial and 70 percent of them are accused of non-violent crimes. “I’ve often said that our county jail lies at the intersection of racism, poverty and a close look at how and why these people -- especially people of color -- have traditionally been detained at the jail underscores the problem.”

“Many of these inmates are poor Black males who have spent years in jail because they have no money to get out.”

But under a new proposal by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, that could all change. On Nov. 16, Dart proposed scrapping Illinois’ cash-bond system, saying it hurts low-level defendants who can’t afford to pay. On the flip side, Dart believes the current cash bond system puts society in danger when defendants with violent back-

Apology Demanded E NOTES By Kai EL’Zabar

Defender Executive Editor So you know by now that over the weekend, the president-elect took time out from choosing his Cabinet to tweet to the “Hamilton" cast: “The cast and producers of Hamilton, which I hear is highly overrated, should immediately apologize to Mike Pence for their terrible behavior.” First of all, who is he to reprimand anyone on terrible behavior? Second, he needs to be focusing on the business at hand instead of chasing folks down on Twitter. True to form, V.P -elect Mike Pence said he wasn’t offended by the message. In fact, he took a different path. Instead, he encourages everyone to try to see the soldout show. Pence told ‘‘Fox News Sunday’’ that he told his daughter, ‘‘That’s what freedom sounds like.’’ Of course, his president-elect stayed in the mix and tweeted “The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!” So I will share with you what I shared with my Facebook community: I think he (Donald Trump) owes the American People and the world an apology for being an irresponsible, rude, disrespectful ass during the presidential campaign, causing us all such great anxiety. He has to regroup and apologize for the

name calling, making fun of people, his lewd, vulgar remarks and total disregard for women as human beings (who do not need men making any decisions for them / us), his direct threats as well as the implied to Madam Secretary Hillary Clinton. This and more he has done. Yes, he has shown us who he is, and now we expect something different from him. Puh-Leeze! Look at him parading himself as well as the men and women, I assume who take the potential appointments for a cabinet position in his administration seriously, as beauty contestants in one of his Miss Universe pageants or, better still, his reality TV show “The Apprentice.” Truth is, what he is good at is marketing/selling a dream, but in his lifetime as a real estate businessman, he's not always delivered what he promised. Instead, he has used his salesmanship to rob others while manipulating his knowledge of the law to take advantage of those who entrusted him to render them their dream. In the end they lost money, a dream and others were not paid (workers, real estate agents). He filed bankruptcy to manipulate the IRS tax laws, thus avoiding paying taxes. He has managed to parlay himself to the top again by selling his celebrity. Just this week he resolved the Trump University lawsuits. The suits asserted fraud claims on behalf of approximately 6,000 former students who had enrolled in the president-elect's seminar and what many would label a faux online "university." He settled for a cool $25 million. "I settled the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of the potential award because as president I have to focus on our country," he said. Really? Well then he needs to act like it, rather than spending

time tweeting. What’s interesting about this settlement is that it’s exactly what he did when charged with housing discrimination: “When I was really young, I went into my father's company, we along with many, many, many other companies, throughout the country, it was a federal lawsuit, were sued. We settled the suit with zero — no admission of guilt. It was very easy to do. But they sued many people.” — Donald Trump During the debate he was quick to tell the world that they settled without admitting any guilt, which is what he said about his recent Trump University settlement. So neither Trump nor his father ever admitted any wrongdoing; however, they did submit to a court order changing their rental practices — only after accusing the Justice Department of “Gestapo tactics” and a failed countersuit against the government agency. That’s his M.O.

Settles Lawsuit on Bogus University He always deflects his actions and projects wrongdoing upon those who call him out. Still the Trump University settlement may be a good deal for the students. Most will recover at least 50% of the tuition they paid for taking the Trump courses. This significant compensation publicly affirms the common-sense validity of their accusations of fraud, no matter why Trump says he settled. Imagine legitimate universities like Trump's alma maters Fordham and Penn issuing 50% tuition refunds to students in response to class-action lawsuits alleging fraud.

Letter to the Editor Clerk of the Circuit Court Needs to Remain and Elected Position Dear Dick Simpson, Political Science Professor, University of Illinois; and Professor Nick Kachiroubas, School of Public Service, DePaul University: This letter is to respectfully provide both of you with information concerning why it is important that the position of Clerk of the Circuit Court should continue to be an elected position. On July 28, 2016, cookcountyrecord.com posted an article titled "Ideas to Reduce Cook County Elected

Yeah, picture that. Trump also said the $25 million settlement was much less than his potential financial exposure in the cases, which alleged Trump defrauded people who enrolled in real estate seminars he started in 2005. This is actually another story because Trump blurted out in a tweet that had he gone to court he would have won. What he didn’t tweet is that class actions almost always settle if they have been "certified" by the court as non-frivolous matters. The students might even have won at trial if supported by credible evidence. As for The Trump University lawsuit, they were not only "certified" but had also survived motions to dismiss. All of this supports that these cases were destined to go to trial if not resolved out of court. The vast majority of "certified" class actions settle with good reason. Legal defense costs are exorbitant, and if the defendants lose the case, the verdict can be catastrophically high. So figure this. Multiply $25,000 times 6,000 students and the figure award adds up to $150 million. That does not include the lawyer’s fees, which could have been at least $5 million for them, bringing the total award to at least $155 million. Point is Trump is up to his usual manipulation of the laws, which he does not respect, to get away with paying the least amount of his money. I think that we have to ask ourselves, who are these people? And face the truth about who they are. That is Trump and all his loyOfficials to Save Money, Boost Effectiveness, Not Going Away." The article stated, "Cook County officials have made several recent attempts to reduce the number of elected positions, saying they want to save money and make the local government more effective. They've had mixed results." Since you were both quoted in the article, this letter is to provide you with an analysis as to why the Clerk of the Court is an important elected position that should remain as such, because it is an essential component of the justice system that should be accountable to the people. In other words, the public needs to be confident that, even if they have to appeal a judge's decision, their record is being maintained by an independently

al supporters, even those elected Republicans who denounced him and now extent a hand. What we know so far is that the Republican elected members of Congress met on the evening of President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2008 and vowed to not only not support him in anything that he presented, but also make sure that he fail as a president of substance. So as we observe the business shenanigans of Trump in the days before his swearing in as the 45th president in January 2017, we know that he is tipping the scales as protocol, good faith, respect for constitutional laws and transparency go. He has never produced his tax return, he has not put his business in a blind trust or sold the properties and he has requested security clearance for Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, when clearly the law states that it is illegal to hire a family member, including a son-in-law. This total disregard of the laws in place that protect the country as a democracy is not to be ignored or taken lightly. Please read history and note that such a man, Adolf Hitler moved into power voicing the fears of the German people, making promises to give them back their pride, power and place in the world as leader. They missed all the clues. Keep your mind open people, and let’s move together. Let’s finally do this. Let’s unite and win against Fascism in any form. elected Clerk of Court, without bias. In the article, Professor Simpson states, "We have seven different elected officials in Cook County. We shouldn't have as many. We ought to limit the number of elected positions so there can be more focus on electing those officials who are really important to the political process." Keeping the position of Clerk of the Circuit Court, as an elected office, reinforces the will of the people and prevents the abuse of power. As stated earlier, an independent, elected Clerk of Court and the checks and balances it provides ensures equal protection of the law and unbiased justice for all. Dr. Wilson could be a major game-changer in how private citizens could influence the narrative of criminal-justice reform. “What Dr. Wilson has done has clearly upset the norm, and when you have business people that are pretty well off — he’s chosen the least of society and made a big difference. You are going to see reform in the bail system. That’s to be commended, because before he started bailing people out, I’ve had bills to change the bail system in Illinois for years. The thing about it is, when he went to put his money up, that really made a difference,” Ford said. He says Wilson has put government to shame. “He was doing what government was supposed to do for people. Because of him, Illinois will have some reforms in our justice system for bail pretrial services.”

The Gift of Giving Rev. Dr. Marshall Hatch Sr. is the pastor for New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, on the near West Side, where it’s built a long-standing relationship within the African-American community. “Dr. Wilson has been pushing the envelope. It shows how it would look if other people in the private sector took interest in these issues — pushing public ofwww.chicagodefender.com

ficials. What Dr. Wilson is doing is showing how simple this issue is to resolve. There are people that are in there for a long period of time because they or their families can’t come up with a few hundred dollars to get them out.” Over the past 50 years, Rev. Hatch’s family has gone into the jails with care packages that started under his father, the late Rev. Elijah Hatch, and now under his leadership, bringing ministry to the correctional centers. “It’s not helping them or their families and the responsibilities they have. It’s not helping the criminal-justice system that is overcrowded. We need to keep those places for criminals who are posing a danger to public safety, not for folks just because they are poor,” Hatch said. “It’s an important part of public policy.” Born in Louisiana, Dr. Wilson admits his upbringing was very humble and poor. He learned early in his childhood the importance of giving and sharing — making sure no one went hungry and homeless. He reflects on a part of his life that has stayed with him. “We never saw hungry days in my life, but when we sat down, all we had to eat was some bread and some molasses. Momma would have to borrow from our neighbor one day, and the next day they would borrow from us,” he said. “It was customary down South.

Sometimes, we didn’t have any food, so we would walk down the road and go to somebody’s house and sit down to eat. This always stayed with me. I’ve been giving all of my life.” Dr. Wilson and his wife have helped release 111 detainees from Cook County Jail since last week. With his new outreach organization, the Dr. Willie Wilson Foundation, he is working with Rev. Hatch to invite the group and their families to New Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church ”Community Thanksgiving Day” dinner. “When Dr. Wilson came up with getting the folks out to do a Thanksgiving dinner for them and their families, I told him we’re already hosting one. We’ll just expand our capacity to serve, and that’s how that came about,” said Rev. Hatch. The church has hosted Thanksgiving dinner for the past 10 years with volunteers helping to serve families, extending their ongoing clothing ministry and boutique for the day. Hatch strongly believes the mission of the church should not only be within the walls of sanctuary, but to be a safe haven for those who are less fortunate. He’s seen the effects of the criminal-justice system run havoc on families in the Black and Brown communities. “The church is to be the advocate of the poor. The criminal-jus-

tice system disproportionately disadvantages the poor. That becomes the part of the mission of the church. That’s the jail ministry. This is a very direct charge for the mission of the church. We can’t forget those that are incarcerated — even the guilty people.” He says the jail is for holding people and the prison is meting out the appropriate sentence for the crime. “The jail means all of us are eligible to be a detainee any given day. You don’t have to break a law to be a detainee, you just have to be accused of a crime,” Hatch said. “That means that Cook County Jail should be very humane and very sensitive to people who don’t pose a risk or a threat to the general public.” In addition to inviting the detainees who Dr. Wilson helped release, he is giving each person $200 to assist them in their re-settlement. Thus far, $50,000 have gone to the bail release of former detainees.

Taking Closer Steps to Bail Reform Dr. Wilson understands that helping to pay the bail cost for people will not necessarily cease the cause of why repeat violations happen. He and his team are working diligently to help those who are seeking assistance in providing shelter and later working with other organizations in the areas of addiction recovery and job training.

“We’re doing all we can do to set up an infrastructure if they don’t have a home to go to. We don’t know what a detainee does when they get out. We just know we do good and good can come out to help other people,” he said. With the election season over and Donald Trump about to be sworn in as our 45th U.S. president, the Illinois General Assembly will be preparing new legislation. Rep. Ford has made it a priority to work on the bill to eliminate bail and encourages his colleagues to co-sponsor, but is hesitant on naming names — yet. “The system will be updated after we’re sworn in for the 2017-18 General Assembly.” Ford says they can file something for the record but it will not likely move, although, he believes it can start the discussion. “If that happens, it can happen in the next week or two.” Not being shy about his wealth, Dr. Wilson believes it’s a higher purpose for those to do something meaningful with their money. “My mission is to create an example that our politicians and other people who have dollars would do some good in this area of humanitarianism,” he continued. “Sometimes they think minorities aren’t doing any good. No, there are a great deal of us doing good. I did it this time publicly so that people could see some good and try to inspire other people.”

Brown Sugar Bakery: Building an Empire By Erick Johnson Defender Staff Writer The holiday rush has begun. The phones at Brown Sugar Bakery in Grand Crossing are constantly ringing and customers keep the cash registers humming. On Thanksgiving Day, the line will be out the door with people seeking to add Stephanie Hart’s irresistible desserts to the family dinner table. It has become part of the Thanksgiving tradition for thousands of residents and families visiting Brown Sugar Bakery at 328 East 75th Street in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. The aroma of sweet potatoes and caramel has become part of an annual rite of passage for customers who can’t get enough of Hart’s cakes, whose jaw-dropping size and stunning appearance easily seduce food lovers of all generations and ethnic groups. That’s the first step. The second part of this experience is gobbling down the sweet and moist creations that are baked from scratch. To many fans, it’s the icing on the cake. The products have spawn a cult following of loyal customers, many of whom travel for miles just to satisfy their taste buds. Now, after 16 years in business, Hart is expanding. Two weeks ago, she opened a store in Navy Pier, the state’s most popular attraction, where some 9.2 million tourists visit a year. At a time when many Black businesses are struggling to survive, Hart’s bakery is cooking and rising in popularity. Located nearly across the street from the venerable Lem’s Barbeque pit, Hart is building an empire and a brand that will be experienced in two stores. But her new bakery in Navy Pier may

be considered a breakthrough, because very few Black-owned businesses operate there. With greater exposure and heavy traffic from millions of visitors, Hart’s brand has the chance to grow exponentially to a huge, untapped market of visitors who will taste her runaway hit. Her product’s reputation has the potential to spread around the world by a large and diverse group of tourists who flock to the Chicago landmark year-round. Hart’s new store at Navy Pier comes at a perfect time. The attraction is in the midst of a $278 million makeover to make the landmark even bigger and more popular. Last summer, a bigger Ferris Wheel

debuted to mark the 100th Anniversary of Navy Pier. Hart’s new store is next to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, a popular attraction that’s experiencing its own success with a $35 million expansion and renovation.

The Next Level These fortunes are a recipe that may take Hart’s success to the next level. How the opportunity came about is a story in itself. She received a call from someone in November 2014, asking if she wanted a vacant space at Navy Pier. After a year of financial planning and building, Hart was

ready to move in. “I feel like I have an opportunity to be more than just a mom-and-pop operation. It helps me build a bigger legacy, but I’m never leaving my neighborhood because this is where I’m from,” Hart said. It has been an interesting journey since Hart opened her bakery in 2004. To get her business off the ground, Hart said she gave out samples of her cake to customers at Lem’s across the street. Last year, thieves broke in and stole all 48 cakes, but didn’t take any money from the cash register. They were caught after trying to sell the cakes on the street for $10. Some of Hart’s dessert costs three times as much. Still, Hart’s customer base continues to grow and help her carve out a national reputation as a top professional baker. In 2014, she was featured on the Food Network. During a visit to her Grand Crossing store Nov. 17, Hart was bubbling with excitement with another big achievement, which food lovers across the country will learn in the coming months. She’s keeping the news a secret. In the meantime, Hart’s creations continue to fly off the shelves. Her signature masterpiece is the caramel cake, a four-layer, 10 inch-round, 7 inch-tall creation, whose smooth icing has converted many dessert lovers. There’s the towering coconut cake and an amazing peanut butter and jelly cake (yes peanut butter and jelly) that has a delicious gourmet taste to it. Then there is the turtle cake, mouthwatering, exquisite combination of chocolate and caramel icing that holds layers of lemon and chocolate mix. It’s Icannye Artistry’s favorite. During this visit, Artistry, a makeup artist, bought a huge slice of it. “It’s so good,” she said. “You got to have it.”

Grand Jury Set to Examine Possible Cover-Up in Laquan Case By Erick Johnson Defender Staff Writer There are 26 of them. Sixteen of them will see evidence that will help determine the fate of several Chicago police officers who are accused of trying to cover up the murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. In the event that any of these jurors are sick or absent, a backup pool of 10 alternates will be ready to step in. The stage is set for the other half of Chicago’s most notorious case of police brutality. On Nov. 16, Patricia Holmes, the special prosecutor in the McDonald case, said a special grand jury has been impaneled to investigate several Chicago police officers who are suspected of lying to protect Officer Jason Van Dyke after he shot McDonald shot 16 times on Oct. 20, 2014. For the next 30 to 40 days, Holmes said, a special grand jury will begin issuing subpoenas in an effort to gather more ev-

idence about the role of the officers who watched the crime unfold at 41st Street and South Pulaski. Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder. His case is still in the pretrial phase at Leighton Criminal Court. But Holmes is investigating another case that involves a possible cover-up of the killing. While the officers say McDonald was walking toward them with a knife, their narrative was contradicted by a dashcam video that showed the teenager walking away from the officers before he was killed.

Protests Broke Out Protests erupted throughout the city in November 2015, when the video was released after a year-long legal battle forced City Hall and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez to turn over the footage in the shooting. While Van Dyke has been the center of public outcry, there have also been con-

cerns about the role and behavior of the officers who did nothing as their colleague slayed a young man who was trying to put his life together. Black leaders said it was another example of where Chicago police officers exercised a brotherhood code of silence that allows law enforcement officials to continue patrolling the streets after committing crimes against civilians, many of whom are Black. As many as 10 officers, including supervisors, are suspected of covering up McDonald’s murder. In August, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson moved to fire four of them. The Chicago Police Board is reviewing Johnson’s recommendation and will make the final decision. Moments after McDonald’s death, a surveillance camera at a nearby Burger King caught several Chicago police officers deleting security video from the fast-food restaurant’s video system. A manager at Burger King said 86 minutes of footage dis-

appeared after the officers left. Then-police Superintendent Garry McCarthy blamed the missing footage on “technical difficulties.” Cook County State’s attorney Anita Alvarez said no one tampered with the video. Both McCarthy and Alvarez have since been ousted from their positions. In September, Alma Benitez, a witness to the shooting, filed a federal lawsuit, alleging that Chicago police officers pressured her to change her story that Van Dyke was unjustified in killing McDonald. She also alleged that the officers tried to cover up the shooting. Now, after community appeals to appoint a special prosecutor in the organization, Holmes is investigating a case that may finally expose a problem that many believe has long been a part of the Chicago Police Department. By law, the grand jury proceedings will be kept secret, but Holmes still plays a key role in determining who will be indicted. www.chicagodefender.com

reports, “Businesses with fewer than 20 employees have only a 37 percent chance of surviving four years (of business) and only a 9 percent chance of surviving 10 years.” Restaurants only have a 20 percent chance of surviving two years. Of these failed business, only 10 percent of them close involuntarily due to bankruptcy and the remaining 90 percent close because the business was not successful, did not provide the level of income desired or was too much work for their efforts. The adage “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan” certainly holds true when it comes to small business success. The failure rate for new businesses seems to be around 70 percent to 80 percent in the first year, and only about half of those who survive the first year will remain in business the next five years. If you are using smart tools to measure performance you will be prepared for what comes next. If not, you will definitely make Massive Mistake No. 3. Massive Mistake No. 4: Lack of Intention Have you ever wondered why you spend hours and hours in your business, but never seem to make any headway? Or why is it that as CEOs we can think of all the ways that our business should be making money but isn’t? Well, today I’m here to tell you that it is the way you think that is holding you back. Our brains play tricks on

us because of preformed programming of habits, beliefs and behaviors that keep us from going forward. Sounds crazy, right? After spending countless hours with thousands of presidents and CEOs like you, I found one major stumbling block! Your brain runs in a loop -- your thoughts start on this cycle of behaviors that literally keeps us from moving forward even when we truly want to change. And if you don’t have a clearly defined intention for your business which describes the habits and behaviors that you need to create your CEO mindset and business success, you are doomed to keep repeating the same behavior. We all know the definition of insanity is “repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result.” We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. Over the past 14 years, it has been my immense pleasure to help presidents and CEOs tap into and change how they think to drive the explosive growth of their business. In the Power UP the Profits: Invisible CEO workshop, I am able to help my clients identify the habits and secrets to catapult their income from $5000 a month in sales to over a half a million per month in sales. FINANCE By Constant W. Watson III Defender Contributing Writer Owing back takes to the IRS and getting those threatening letters can be very frightening. For what it’s worth, take some comfort in knowing that you are not alone. There are millions of Americans in similar situations, dealing with debt hanging over their heads and concerned about how it will affect their future. The good news is that you have many options. To fully understand and take advantage of your options, I urge you to see a qualified tax-resolution professional. They will take a close look at your previous returns, looking for mistakes that may have resulted in an inflated tax debt amount. This process alone could substantially lower your IRS debt. Once you and your qualified tax professional have analyzed your previous returns, the next step is to negotiate a resolution with the IRS. You will most likely be looking at one of two options — the Offer in Compromise or the Installment Agreement. The Offer in Compromise was created for people who owe a substantial amount to the IRS but who, for whatever reason, are unable to pay their tax debt off, even over time. The Offer in Compromise allows taxpayers to negotiate a settlement amount that will take care of the entire tax debt www.chicagodefender.com

However, the IRS has several different collection alternatives that deal with resolving a NFTL, if you qualify. You can resolve a federal tax lien by paying it in full, or if that is not an option, you can find out if you qualify for a “Release of Lien,” a “Lien Subordination,” a “Lien Discharge” or “Lien Withdrawal.” It is important to keep in mind that IRS problems didn’t just happen overnight and will take some time to resolve. It’s important to consult with a tax professional to see what lien relief programs you may be eligible for before the IRS starts enforcing aggressive collection against you. Barnett and anti-lynching/civil rights activist, journalist, and publisher Ida B. Wells Barnett. Continuing her parents’ legacy of telling America’s story, she edited her mother’s critically acclaimed Crusade for Justice: The Autobiography of Ida B. Wells (The University of Chicago Press). More about the Duster Civic Club: Ida B. Wells Barnett, also known as the “Mother of Clubs,” organized this country’s first civic club in 1893. This, in turn, resulted in the founding of the National Association of Colored Women’s

Clubs Inc., of which The Alfreda Wells Duster Civic Club is an affiliate. Duster and her sister, Ida B. Barnett, were active members of the “Duster Club” until their deaths in the 1980s. Today, this inter-generational club’s expanded mission includes the promotion of programs and projects that support the civic, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual advancement of the Black community. Dave Hollister: the Music, the Man, the Manuscript By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor A voice that has graced the R&B charts since the early 1990s, Dave Hollister began his singing career in his hometown of Chicago, in the best bootcamp for vocalists — the church choir. Over the last two decades, he has released 10 albums, been featured on multiple collaborations with artists from Erick Sermon to Fred Hammond, and starred in theatrical plays such as his recent role in Love Jones, The Musical. This time, he treats fans with his most recent album, The Manuscript. up there. It kind of drew me away from the church as I got older.”

Joining Blackstreet In 1993, Hollister found himself in a unique situation, joining the newly formed male group, Blackstreet — headed up by platinum-selling producer Teddy Riley. “It was Teddy that kept me wanting to be in that situation. He was an icon and legend. Since Guy came out with the very first album, I’ve always wanted to be connected. I was upset because I was wondering how in the heck did Aaron Hall end up with this man,” he laughs. “I mean Aaron Hall is OK. At that time, I was being a jerk. He had come out of one of the churches that I was going to — Hezekiah Walker’s church at the time.” He admired Hall’s vocal style and how he brought a unique Gospel vibe to R&B. “I was a closet fan,” he admits. The success of Blackstreet spread nationwide, and Hollister’s voice could be heard on radio airwaves around the country on thehit single, “Before I Let You Go.” His time with the group will

be short-lived, soon leaving after three years. “If we didn’t have the problems with jealousy in that group. I’m going to call names — Chauncey. If he had not showed forth his jealousy, we would probably be together today like New Edition.” Along with Riley, Chauncey Hannibal were the founders of Blackstreet as well as active members. “When jealousy and pride rears its head, those are two hard demons to fight and to stick with. I don’t deal with them well. That thing reared its head and it divided the group.” Hollister’s musical catalog is rich in cultural norms from Soul, Hip Hop and his Gospel roots — collaborating on the critically acclaimed project “United Tenors.”Out of the 10 albums Hollister has under his belt, Chicago ’85 . . . The Movie was one of the turning points in his career. “It started out with the very first song that was recorded, ‘I Don’t Want to Be a Hustler’. It was actually going in another direction because ‘85 was the year that I found out that my father was not my biological father. That drove me into doing things,” he said. He recalls his earlier years of the devastating news and at 15, the young singer fell into the wrong crowd — joining a gang and selling drugs. He channeled it into his music. “When I recorded the record at that time, I was going through something with my ex-wife and it made another turn. Me, being from Chicago, I’m a thinker. We think a lot.” Released on DreamWorks, Chicago ’85 . . . The Movie would go on to selling over 500,000 copies, with “One Woman Man” peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard 200 and on R&B album charts at No. 10. Currently, Hollister is on the Love In the 90s tour with former bandmate Teddy Riley, along with En Vogue, Jagged Edge, Adina Howard and Blackstreet — performing in front of old and new followers. As a husband, father and minister, Hollister has risen above the various changes in the music business while continuing his signature brand of music on his new album, The Manuscript, as a singer, producer and songwriter. “I’m a cinematic writer. When I approach songs, I approach songs as movies. I want you to be able to close your eyes and look and see what I’m saying.” www.chicagodefender.com

Your Waistline’s New Best Friend

Finally, after decades of honestly shrugging when people asked me to identify my favorite recipe, I’ve experienced an “aha” moment just in time for this holiday season. Mulling over my mom’s notes about

Cucumber Lemon Water By Eleana Elan Defender Staff Writer One of the distinctive differences between men and women is the waistline. Throughout history women have gone through great lengths to accentuate their waistlines. From beaded waistlets to corsets to beyond, women have had a fascination with the difference in inches from their waist-to-hip span. That difference made the contour of a woman more intriguing to men, enhancing the ample spread of her womanly hips. That increase in inches from the waist to the hips becomes more challenging to maintain as women grow older and meet the peri-menopausal years. You can begin by ceasing to drink sugary drinks. One of the natural ways to assist is to add cucumbers to your diet. Cucumbers are one of the most underrated fruits around, even though they have so many health benefits. It probably comes to many as a surprise that the cucumber is actually a fruit, not a vegetable. Cucumbers are part of a gourd plant family called Cucurbitaceae and are considered a “cylindrical fruit.” They grow on vines and come in three main varieties: slicing, pickling, and burpless. They’re made up of mostly water, which makes them a perfect component of a cooling detox drink. They are also really low in calories and high in fiber, which makes them a great addition to your diet during weight loss because they’ll fill you up and help you feel more satisfied. The change in hormones can change the distribution of fat and add unwanted inches to the sacred waistline, as well as stress. However, cucumbers actually fight that. If you’re stressed out, just cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water. The chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress similar to lavender, which is also soothing and relaxing. Among their other many health benefits, cucumbers are a great source of vitamin B, rich in potassium and magnesium (which may help to lower blood pressure), and have even been associated with fighting cancer. Another bonus quality of cucumbers is anti-inflammatory flavonol called “fisetin,“ www.chicagodefender.com

which studies have shown to help improve brain health. Cucumbers are a known antioxidant, and also contain polyphenols called lignans, which may help to lower your risk of certain types of cancer, including ovarian, breast, and prostate cancer. One way to add cucumbers to your diet is to make cucumber water. The benefits of drinking cucumber water are many. To start, water helps flush and detox your body, it keeps you feeling more full so you don’t eat as much, and even helps increase your metabolism.

how “some dishes mean a lot more than something good to eat” provided an “aha” moment. I’m grateful for a Mom who developed what she described as a “slow and simple” way to turning our post-Thanksgiving turkey carcass into a dish our ancestors would love,” when the busy school administrator had many more things to do than tweak a family recipe to fit into her incredibly busy schedule. I’m also grateful for the importance she placed on cooking, traditions, family cooks and family recipes, which played a large part in my deciding to build a career around the same subject. I’m also grateful for you giving me the opportunity to share our rich (and delicious) culinary, cultural heritage.

Good for Weight Loss

If you’re trying to lose weight, drinking water is one of the easiest things you can do to give your efforts a boost. Second, cucumbers are what’s known as a “superfood,” which basically means they’re very nutrient-rich and good for you. They also taste great with almost any fruit in fruit-infused water recipes, adding a zip of freshness, not really changing the taste of whatever it is added to but rather enhancing it. When you put these two healthy ingredients together, the cucumber water benefits are extraordinary. If you’re looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite without having to break your bank, try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes daily and observe the changes. The phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles, too, whether on your face, hands or neck. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache-free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache! Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? If you hate chewing carrots, note that cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation. So slice your cucumber now, add the slices to a pitcher of water and refresh yourself.
