ComEd Program to Introduce More Students to STEM
ComEd’s Solar Spotlight program is designed to expose African American high school students to opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as part of its annual Black History Month celebration. During ComEd’s Solar Spotlight, more than 60 high school students will participate in the two-day educational sessions where they will interact with STEM professionals, including ComEd engineers and executives, to learn more about solar energy, famous African American STEM leaders and careers. The Solar Spotlight curriculum includes live solar demonstrations and new this year, the students will help assemble portable solar suitcases in conjunction with the team from We Share Solar. The portable suitcases include solar cells that generate energy and can become a back-up power source during emergencies for lights, cell phones and computers. The suitcases assembled by the students will be sent to local community centers and
some will be sent beyond Illinois’ borders to locations like Haiti and Puerto Rico, which have been impacted by hurricanes that caused massive power outages. The Solar Spotlight educational events are set to take place on Feb. 10 at the ComEd Training Center in Bridgeport, and on Feb. 17, students will visit the Illinois Tech’s (IIT) campus. While at IIT, Solar Spotlight students will be given a tour of the facility and be introduced to current IIT students. The educational events are part of ComEd’s effort to cultivate the next wave of STEM talent and create the workforce of the future. While African-Americans make up 14 percent of college students, they represent only 8 percent of general engineering, 7 percent of mathematics and 5 percent of computer engineering majors. To urge the students toward STEM careers, ComEd engineers, employees and members of the Exelon African-American Resource Alliance (EAARA) will serve as the students’ mentors for the programming.
Chicago Department of Aviation and Ethiopian Airlines Announce First-Ever Direct Flights to Africa From Chicago-O’Hare The Chicago Department of Aviation and its newest air carrier partner, Ethiopian Airlines, announced this week that new nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) will begin on June 2, 2018. The addition of this new service represents the first-ever direct scheduled passenger service between Chicago and Africa, and the eighth new international service to Chicago that is planned to launch in 2018. “While each new destination added at O’Hare International Airport further expands our connectivity to the world, this landmark route will unlock new opportunities for the City of Chicago and travelers across the globe,” said Gin-
ger S. Evans, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Aviation. “We want to thank Ethiopian Airlines for choosing to grow in Chicago, and we look forward to partnering with them to deliver new tourism and economic opportunities here and throughout Africa.” The new service will be offered three-times weekly, with flights departing O’Hare on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday; and arriving on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using a 270seat Boeing 787-8 aircraft. O’Hare will become one of few airports in the U.S. offering frequent, direct passenger service to the nation of Ethiopia, as well as the continent of Africa. Further, the service is expected to bring $70 million in annual economic impact to the Chicago region.

U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush introduced a resolution supporting the designation of the week of February 12 through February 16, 2018, as “Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week” to raise awareness and understanding that heart disease is the number one killer of women and that it disproportionately affects Black women. As the country celebrates Black History Month and American Heart Month this February, it is critical to elevate both the cultural significance of the month and the awareness of the health crisis directly impacting Black women. “This is an issue that hits close to home, as I lost my beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn, to heart disease last year,” said Rush. “I am personally committed to doing what I can to help educate Black women about their health risk and how to prevent this disease from impacting their lives. Black women are leading the way in our country and we must do everything we can to not only promote their successes but protect their hearts.” The statistics for the impact of cardiovascular diseases in Black women are staggering and should be a siren call to action. According to the American Heart Association: •African-American women are less likely than Caucasian women to be aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death. •Cardiovascular diseases kill nearly 50,000 African-American women annually. •Of African-American women ages 20 and older, 49 percent have heart diseases. •Only 1 in 5 African-American women believes she is personally at risk. •Only 52 percent of African-American women are aware of the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. •Only 36 percent of African-American women know that heart disease is their greatest health risk. “I hope that this resolution further increases the awareness of the work that is currently being done and allows us all to stand together in improving the heart health of all those who are disproportionately affected. Fighting against this deadly disease is my mission and it is how I will continue to honor my late wife, Carolyn,” said Rush. To kick off the week, Congressman Rush will host an event called, “A Heart to Heart Conversation: African-American Women and Heart Disease,” on Monday, February 12, 2018, from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Illinois Institute of Technology, located at 10 West 35th Street Chicago, Illinois. Chicago Black Restaurant Week WHAT IT IS: Chicago Black Restaurant Week is a week-long event designed to celebrate amazing food and beverage businesses, owned by African Americans in our community. Founded in the Summer of 2015 by Lauran Smith (native Memphian), she decided that African American businesses needed their own week of support, allowing everyone to get a chance to taste the goodness in the community, where these businesses will share discounts on items of their choosing. WHY IT IS: In 1926, Dr Carter G Woodson created “Negro History Week,” which fell during the second week of February - to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans in History. In 1976, the month of February became Black History Month. While the Designer was busy creating this annual event, she decided to honor Dr. Woodson’s initial legacy by placing CBRW during the second week in February! WHERE IT IS: CBRW is held at various registered African American owned restaurants throughout the city and suburbs of Chicago, and a list of all participating businesses can be found on the event website (chiblackrestaurantweek.com), as well as the various social media channels associated with the week. Chicago Black Restaurant Week Prepares For Third Year By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In search of African American representation in the annual Chicago Restaurant Week (and not being satisfied with what she found), Black business enthusiast Lauran Smith decided to feature Black-owned restaurants in a week of her own, Chicago Black Restaurant Week (CBRW). Launched in February 2016 by Smith, CBRW, now in its third year, strives to create a platform for Blackowned eateries to be recognized, celebrated, and most importantly patronized. CBRW participating eateries hail from the city’s South subLauran Smith urbs to the South, West, and North side neighborhoods. Smith made certain to clarify CBRW is not exclusive to restaurants; in fact, businesses that specialize in desserts among others THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
are also included. She said she strategically planned for CBRW to fall on the second week of February - this year Feb. 11-18 - in an effort to honor Dr. Carter G. Woodson who created “Negro History Week” in 1926, which would later become Black History Month. “Even though there are some Black businesses that do participate in Restaurant Week which is fine because I love Chicago Restaurant Week, I still feel that we as a people deserve our own week,” said Smith. This year more than 20 restaurants are registered and confirmed to participate. The first year of CBRW featured 17 restaurants. According to CBRW’s website, last year 904 dinners were served and $12,789 was spent. Supporting Black-owned businesses isn’t just an effort reserved for Black History Month but rather a lifestyle for Smith. “I want to make sure that I am pouring my money back into my community because I want the community to last for our children and our children’s children so whatever I can do to support our community and grow our communiwww.chicagodefender.com
ty, that’s what I always try to do,” said Smith. Looking ahead to next year, Smith is hoping to attract the attention of local celebrities like Chance The Rapper or even President Barack Obama to participate in CBRW. The planning phase for CBRW begins at the end of July/ start of August each year by updating all of the social media platforms, changing the dates on sponsorship packages, and more. The growing success of CBRW has not been met without resistance, however. Smith had to defend her brand from a local company she said attempted to not only steal her logo but take credit for CBRW altogether. Meanwhile, a select number of groups criticized Smith for not launching a “White Restaurant Week” or other weeks highlighting different ethnicities/communities. “I heard people of other ethnicities say, ‘well, we don’t have Polish Restaurant Week’ and so my response is that is not up to me,” said Smith. “If you want to create something like that, it’s up to you but I am going to support the community that I come from.” February 7 - 13, 2018 3

Felicia Bullock’s Fearless Flynn Rush Has All Eyes March to Springfield Set Toward Springfield By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer
By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The next few weeks will determine if candidate for the Illinois House’s 5th district Felicia Bullock will fulfill a lifelong dream of holding public office along with igniting the changes she believes are necessary within her community. “I’m running because I want to see effective leadership in Springfield,” said Bullock. “I want to make sure our communities have what they need; I want to make sure that our communities are safe.” The first-time candidate described the campaign process as “sink or swim.” “I don’t think anyone would want their first race to be this kind of crazy race but I do feel like there’s so many lessons to be learned here,” said Bullock. “My eyes have been truly opened about how things work in politics. You hear the myths about what happens behind the scenes in politics, but to see it in action because of the race that I’m in... by how high people view the stakes here.” One “lesson” Bullock could not have been prepared for as she gathered to run for office was the presumed agenda of those in the Democratic Party. She told the Defender that representatives from the party asked her to withdraw from the race in an effort not to split the vote against one of her opponents, former State Rep. Ken Dunkin, during the petitioning stage of her campaign. “I’m sure you’re aware that the party is not a fan of Ken Dunkin so very early on the party vetted candidates, they were very clear, they wanted to pick a candidate to go against Ken Dunkin head-to-head, and at that they asked me, ‘if we back someone who isn’t you would you be willing to withdraw from the race,’ ” said Bullock. “I told them then I would not be willing to withdraw from the race because at this point, I am committed. I said I would respect their decision to back someone else but I would not withdraw from the race.” Bullock said after collecting, filing and defending her petitions, she was called in to an additional meeting with representatives of the Democratic Party where she was again asked to withdraw. She said after having these conversations she was not intimidated, however she did say the meeting organizers may have wanted her to be intimidated. She credited her husband and family for supporting her over the past few weeks. “I was a bit disheartened that the party wouldn’t let democracy run the way it was supposed to be run,” said Bullock. “It’s not their decision who ends up on the ballot. If people do all the work it takes to go into petitioning and they make it through the challenging phase, that’s it.” The Defender reached out to the Cook County Democratic Party to verify Bullock’s claim and was instructed to forward all inquiries to various bodies within the party for an official statement. Felicia Bullock, candidate for Illinois House’s 5th district seat, will not “play dirty” despite the criticism and adversity she’s faced while campaigning. while she’s been on the trail; critics have talked about the number of years she has resided within the fifth district, her age, and about her employment with the University of Chicago. Bullock, who is still working full-time with the UC as a senior buyer while campaigning, has worked in the procurement realm since graduating from Northern Illinois University where she earned a degree in political science. She said UC gets a “bad rap” for its procurement efforts when compared to companies she previously worked at that exhibited precious little effort in diversity related efforts. However, she was clear to state UC “absolutely” has room for improvement. Bullock shared that she experienced ageism based on some of the questions she was asked. “I think people look at me and think ‘you have all the rest of your life to do this’,” said Bullock, who is 30. “They think it’s OK not to vote for you this time because you have another 30 years to run for office; well that’s not right, that should not be a reason you don’t vote for me. We need a diverse representation of people in Springfield, including age. If everyone in Springfield is the same age, how do our ideals get represented?” Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Bullock is an “extremely passionate” alumna of Chicago Public Schools, having attended local city schools all her life, and she wants people to have the same “excellent” education she received. And yet while on the campaign trail, she knows everyone has not had the same positive experience she did. She believes a step forward in that direction would be the creation of an elected school board to ensure all voices within the community are heard. “It’s important for us to move in that direction for the community to have a voice, parents to have a voice...[with] the people who are making the decision for the school,” said Bullock. Despite what may come her way, Bullock maintains she will not “play dirty.” “I’m a Christian, I’m a woman of faith and I will not compromise my faith at all during this process,” said Bullock. Stepping from beyond the shadow of a larger than life figure in Chicago’s Civil Rights history can be a daunting task for anyone, but Flynn Rush, a son of U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, is up for the challenge as he pursues a seat in Springfield representing the 25th district of Illinois. “I’m proud of what my father has accomplished but I have my own set of footprints,” said Flynn Rush. “I’ve got my own blueprint that God gave me. I stand on the shoulders of my father and people like Fred Hampton, Sr., Huey P. Newton, Harold Washington, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., and of course, Dr. King and Malcolm X. I stand on those individuals’ shoulders who have paved the way for myself and many others.” Rush told stories about how growing up while within the 25th district he witnessed firsthand the impact politics can have on the surrounding community from watching his father in action. With a drive to support his own community, the Hyde Park HS alumnus said he planned to run against the incumbent State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie in 2016 before ultimately deciding not to pursue a full campaign. Now following the announcement of Currie’s plans to retire, he said it’s his time to pursue state office. “Times have changed; it’s a different time, different space than when she was first in office,” said Rush. Rush made his platform of community first leadership crystal clear when speaking with the Defender. “My three major points to my campaign are: inclusiveness, transparency and accountability,” said Rush. “It’s all about being inclusive and that’s including the community, and when I’m state representative including [others] to have a seat at the table and see what their needs are and what their cares are, wants are. Although there are many complex issues in the 25th, my plan is simple: put the interests of the people first.” When discussing the incoming Obama Presidential Library, Rush stated he supports a community benefits agreement. Keeping with his platform of inclusiveness, he hopes the community voices will be invited to the dialogue about the future of their communities. “I definitely believe with the Obama Library it needs the community benefits agreement,” said Rush. “I think the community needs a place at the table from every aspect from the coming of that library to the 25th district. Flynn Rush is running for the Illinois House’s 25th district seat to make a name all his own. need to be inclusive.” In an effort to gauge the community’s feelings on the prospective improvements to the South Shore golf course, Rush attended a recent community hearing held at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr. “There’s a lot of talk with the PGA golf course, and when speaking with the residents last night a lot of them are for it and others think it’s a tool for displacement,” said Rush. “They too need a seat at the table. I just think it needs to be an effort that the Obama Foundation looks at the residents first.” Rush referred to the 25th district as a “tale of two communities” given the different economic engines (or lack thereof) within the 25th district when comparing the northern and southern portions. He said he intends to recruit businesses to come throughout the area to spur economic development. Specifically, he told the Defender he intends to work with the alderman and the community at-large to bring a new grocery store to the currently vacant lot at Jeffery Plaza, 2101 E. 71st St., where a Dominick’s previously resided. “They haven’t had a viable grocery store where residents can get fresh fruits and vegetables and meats and things in the community... you have to go out further south,” said Rush. “The South Shore [community] is so rich in land, rich in culture; it’s really a great neighborhood. I think from the neglect is where we see the demise, we see the hopelessness that resides there now.” Environmental issues were of concern to Rush as well. With regards to the manganese issues being reported on the southern side of the district, the candidate said he would like to sit down with the companies involved, community members, and alderman to find a viable solution. By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Chicago’s aldermanic races can potentially yield a dramatic shift in the city’s political realm. The coming elections will have two special Black candidates fighting to be the first Black aldermen in North Side wards. Maria Hadden is currently campaigning in Rogers Park to win the 49th ward over longtime incumbent Joe Moore. A victory means that Hadden will be the first Black queer alderman to have ever been elected in Chicago. Ugo Okere is a 21-year old Nigerian immigrant hoping to secure the aldermanic seat in the 40th ward. This Loyola student is also a Democratic Socialist hoping to continue the budding progressive vision in Chicago. The Chicago Defender briefly talked with the two candidates to inquire a little further about their campaigns and their vision of a new Chicago North Side. Can you tell me who you are and why are you running for alderman? Okere: My name is Ugo Okere. I’m an organizer. I’m an immigrant. I’m a student at Loyola University in Chicago studying social work and political science. I got really involved in Bernie Sanders’ campaign and it taught me a lot about the ills of capitalism and how it allows the most marginalized and oppressed people to fall through the cracks. I’m running because we’re in a moment right now. We are in a moment where people realize that the city of Chicago’s schools are segregated, not just by race but also by economics. Bernie said throughout the entire campaign that young people need to run for office and people of color need to run for office because when we don’t, we get people like Donald Trump or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell royally screwing up the country in the interest of the capital class. Hadden: I decided to run because people asked me. Upon consideration, I honestly felt like I had the experience. Not just the work experience and the experience in government, but the experiences from my identity––the type of experiences we need in office. I feel that there is nothing to lose and everything to gain from it. I’m running to enable others like me to run too. I really want to know about the challenges you face on this campaign. What obstacles do you encounter as you run for alderman? Okere: There is a lot of disdain for Ald. O’Connor. It has been thirty years of disconnected leadership from allowing his wife––his wife is a real estate broker––to make $22 million off of his ability to zone in the ward. He has an incessant record of voting with the mayor. We don’t elect the mayor to be our alderman; Ald. O’Connor was elected. But as far as obstacles, obviously it’s going to be money. Ald. O’Connor will use more than $200,000 to win this election. I have no doubt about that. But I’m not really concerned. What I’m concerned with is the fact that we can get average working class people engaged. It’s going to take our background in organizing and our grassroots work to pull this off. Hadden: One of the biggest challenges was just deciding to run, especially considering my work with inclusive civic engagement at the local level. For a couple of years people in my neighborhood, friends, and colleagues would ask, “Hey, when are you going to run?” There are a huge amount of challenges that are not to 6 February 7 - 13, 2018

We need an elected school board in the city of Chicago. We as aldermen can’t just make an elected school board. We have to go through the state legislature. But I will be an advocate and supporter of CTU to ensure that it will pass in the state legislature. Ugo Okere be underestimated that longtime incumbents have, and first and foremost is name recognition. At the most basic level, elections are about name recognition and popularity. The first challenge is I’m not going to reach his level of name recognition in one race. I can get close. Then there are connections, experience, and funds. In Chicago, we have some of the most costly local elections in the country. My opponent has a knowledge base of funders and donors; a lot of that comes with incumbency. But there is a disadvantage in the fact that Ald. Moore has a 27-year track record of reasons on why he shouldn’t be alderman anymore. Okere, what do you think winning the 40th ward seat would mean for socialism? Okere: Right now we’re lucky to have Ald. Rosa (35th) leading the way for democratic socialism in the city of Chicago. But it’s not enough to just have one person. It’s not enough to have one person championing our ideals, championing our ideology, and championing what we want to see on a city-level. We need to build a movement to ensure he is not the only one there. There are 49 other aldermen and the mayor. He does not have as much leverage as we would like him to. If we had more progressives in office, we can really make a difference in bringing progressives ideas to life. How long have you been contemplating a run? Hadden: I found myself falling into the same trap that lots of women and people of color do, and that’s facing www.chicagodefender.com
marginalization. There was a lot of self-doubt and telling myself that I couldn’t. Before March of 2017, I have never seriously considered running for public office. Okere: I was thinking about it very heavily in December 2016. I think I made my decision February 2017. If you are elected, what’s the priority? It’s day one and you have the opportunity to focus on one thing. What is that first thing you address? Okere: Education. We need an elected school board in the city of Chicago. We as aldermen can’t just make an elected school board. We have to go through the state legislature. But I will be an advocate and supporter of CTU to ensure that it will pass in the state legislature. Hadden: Formalizing the relationships with our schools, social service partners, and community organizations. I want an Aldermanic Youth Council. First is setting up the structures that is going to further communication and democratic participation between all who are doing community work in the org, so my team and others can collaborate. Give me one word that defines your campaign? Okere: “Inclusivity.” I say that because this city has a history of division. If we can build a progressive movement that includes Black, White, queer, the disabled, and so on and so forth, we can adequately address the issue of this city being so segregated. Young, Gifted and Chefs: Jenesys K. Harris and Nia Williams Interviewed by: Lauran E. Smith Written by: Mary L. Datcher A published author and young business owner of sweets and pastry company Pizzazzed Plus—Jenesys Harris is making moves. In 2013, her mother launched the company after being laid off from her job; she put her baking skills into a successful venture. But, after a few years of cutting her teeth as an entrepreneur, she decided to hang up her apron. Studying her closely and learning her craft, Jenesys asked her mom if she could continue to run her business. At 12, Nia Williams is belting out cupcakes, cookies, pies, and cakes under her company—Nia’s Sweet Treats. Her mission is to spread happiness through baking. Lauran Elle Smith, Creative Director for Black Restaurant Week, sat down with both Jenesys and Nia to discuss these young pastry chefs’ start in the business. Jenesys K. Harris How old are you and how did you get into owning your own business? I’m 10 years old. My part in BRW is entitled Pizzazzed Plus. At Pizzazzed Plus we dip Oreos, pretzels, rice crispies and a variety of other things. We dip them in chocolate and we can also decorate them to your liking. We use sprinkles, little designs and we also incorporate other treats. Everybody is very interested in the fact that you’re only 10. How did you get into the business of the sweet treats? It was originally my mother’s business. When she decided to take a break and retire, I wanted to keep it going. I said I wanted to take over it. If you had to choose one specific item that people go crazy over from your business, what would that be? Pretzels are very basic, and they really love them. If they do a full order, they would order them. How did you learn about Black Restaurant Week? I learned about it through my mom. I loved the idea and Lauran invited me to be a part of it to spread the word about my business. How can people find you? We make any treat you can think of--we make cookies, cakes, cake pops, chocolates and fudge. Since you’re so young, how did you get inspired to get into the business of becoming a pastry chef? My mom took me to a meeting that I didn’t want to attend. When it was time to leave the meeting, my mom asked me if I wanted to try some pound cake. I tried it and I really wanted to make it. IN THE MIX In the Mix: J.B. Pritzker’s Apology; Chance the Rapper Strikes Again By Mary L. Datcher Defender Managing Editor Houston, we have a problem. There will be a delay for early voting. Originally set for Feb. 8, with a record number of challenges by candidates finding every tool in the toolshed to knock their opponents off the ballot, it has ultimately overloaded the Cook County Board of Elections capabilities for a timely system. Although ballot numbers have been issued to candidates—early voting may not take Mary L. Datcher place until the latter part of February. DuPage County officials are dealing with a similar situation. The first IL 25th District State Representative Candidate forum took place this past Sunday at Montgomery Place—a resident village for seniors in Hyde Park. All seven candidates were in attendance to discuss several topics; the forum was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Chicago. Moderated by Diana White (LWV, Chicago), the discussion featured 25th State Rep. Candidates: William Calloway, Angelique N. Collins, Adrienne Irmer, Grace Chan McKibben, Anne Marie Miles, Flynn Rush and Curtis Tarver II. Hold Up, Wait A Minute The latest drama from the Blago and JB FBI wiretap recordings is the exchange between the two men discussing who should be the next Senate appointment to replace Barack Obama’s seat. According to the Chicago Tribune, the recordings revealed a conversation where Pritzker is advising then-Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich on the probability of appointing Secretary of State Jesse White to the vacant seat. The conversation revealed Pritzker’s distaste for Jesse Jackson, Jr. and later jokingly considering Rev. Jeremiah Wright—Obama’s former pastor. It was disturbing to hear a conversation between two powerful men when Blagojevich secured a major percentage of the African American vote and now-Democratic gubernatorial candidate Pritzker wishes to do the same in this election. In addition, nearly half of the Black Aldermanic Caucus and state officials have endorsed him, including Jesse White. No longer in politics, Jesse Jackson, Jr. is out of the public eye but his brother, Jonathan Jackson, is currently working as a political consultant on Pritzker’s campaign. Some advocates for Pritzker will admit, it’s suspect to release such recordings 50 days from the primary election and this shouldn’t sway voters from all of the philanthropic work of Pritzker over the years—yet it opens another can of worms. The day after the article was published, Pritzker immediately called a press conference at MacArthur’s restaurant on the Westside, flanked by Black business leaders and public officials. Nine years after the conversation, Pritzker apologized for his comments in front of the media. “Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values. In my life, I have tried to live up to the values that my parents have taught me – the values of fighting for equality and inclusion, fighting for civil rights and social justice. That means creating jobs, providing school breakfast, and expanding early childhood education,” said Pritzker. Released by the Pritzker camp, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle added her endorsement to the long list of Democratic officials who are seeking to make Bruce Rauner a one-term governor. “I’ve seen JB’s record and I know what’s in his heart. This is a leader who has been there for our communities. From expanding early childhood education and providing school breakfasts to low-income students, to supporting critical organizations like the Center on Wrongful Convictions, the DuSable Museum, and After School Matters, JB has done the real work to build opportunity in our communities. Right now, the only question our community should be asking is who has a record of showing up for us, and I truly believe that JB is that leader, said Preckwinkle.” To Black people, this conversation reveals how some of us are viewed as being “safe” and “conformative” versus others as “militant” and “threatening.” How the privilege and entitled have these conversations everyday— changing the democracy of our nation while viewing us as “useful” for a limited time. On the other hand, it drives home how much our vote matters in putting someone in office. We also have a track record of just how much our community will forgive but not forget. It was great to see awesome talent grace the stage, reciting the words of Hughes from Malcolm London; the Wordsmyth Malik Yusef; Broadway actress and singer Felecia Fields; Golden Globe award-winner Regina Taylor; actor Timon Kyle Durrett (Queen Sugar); former radio personality and actress LaDonna Tittle (The Chi) and R&B singer Terisa Griffin. Both Griffin and Fields gave an electrifying vocal performance with the band between poets—it added a different twist to the show. Chicago’s very own Chance the Rapper and SocialWorks will join forces with Scholly® to provide the Scholly app and millions of dollars in scholarships to Chicago Public School students at the Scholly® Scholarship Sum-

Jerk Taco Man Primed For Expansion By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Restaurateur Julius Thomas is continuing to take his “Jerk Taco Man” business to new heights with the impending opening of a new South Side location. Four years since serving his first jerk taco, the neighborhood favorite will be opening its newest location, a 7,000 sq. ft. full service restaurant at 7723 S. State St., following city and health inspections, said Thomas. The space will include a patio area, too. The menu will feature authentic jerk BBQ, curry goat, oxtails, red snapper, a dessert section, and more. Currently, Thomas is hiring for 80 positions at the soon to be opened location. He said he’s open to hiring “anyone who will respect my space and respect my customers.” “I will hire felons, I will hire whomever; I have no discrimination against people’s backgrounds, if they are trying to do right and they are trying to make a living for their family and they are trying to respect my space, they are welcome to work with me,” said Thomas. Thomas, who calls Chicago his “hometown,” intends to keep the West Side location open; he described the community’s support of him and his business “a great 18 February 7 - 13, 2018
ride.” The two brick and mortar restaurants will be supported by five already operational food trucks. He noted he will announce a grand opening in the coming weeks. The aptly named “Jerk Taco Man” restaurant earned its name based on how Thomas first started the business by selling jerk tacos from his car. Along the way his customers gave the business its name, which Thomas ran with it. “The customers gave me that name after [I was] on the empty lot serving tacos day and night... they just started calling me the jerk taco man,” said Thomas. “Jerk tacos are where I started. The name just stuck so I went ahead and trademarked it.” After multiple stops on Chicago’s West Side, Thomas eventually settled at his long standing West Garfield Park location at 4001 W. Jackson Blvd. At one point early on in the business he was housed at his wife’s hair store, Hair 4 Less, 131 S. to Thomas’ family reunions over the years. He explained members of his family would bring their jerk “A game” when they would dine together, which gave him the idea to borrow some of their recipes to launch his own restaurant. He credits his great-grandfather who was from Kingston, Jamaica, for some of his menu staples. In addition to providing Chicago residents with authentic Jamaican cuisine, the “Jerk Taco Man” will also lend his hand toward helping the community. “We started a foundation that’s targeted more towards helping the community, Olevia Sixth Foundation; it’s a non-profit organization that my sister heads up. She’s the president, and it’s all about giving back to the community; it’s not about dynasties, it’s about a legacy I’m trying to create now,” said Thomas. These days Thomas is doing double duty as he is taking the lead on the construction of the South Side location while still maintaining the day-to-day operations of the restaurant and food trucks. “I’m the general contractor for my build out. It’s a grind of getting up in the morning, getting these guys on the clock, getting them started, shutting them down around 4 p.m., and also making sure the food truck that’s currently serving on 77th St. [is up and working],” said Thomas. Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon) - Talow has been at the top of the list for most of the season. He’s shown and proved all year as he’s led the Wolverines to a 20-3 record. The tough national schedule will help Simeon in the long run as they get ready for the City and State playoff tournaments. We’re looking forward to seeing as Talen has an opportunity to take his game to new heights. Last Week’s Rank #1 2. Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park) Even though Ayo has been sidelined for a few weeks, we’re not gonna let that hinder his #2 spot. He’s the key to the Mustangs if they want to repeat as 3A champs (Even though they won the Championship game without him last year.). It will be interesting to see where he is mentally/physically upon his return, but the Mustangs will surely be glad to have him back in any capacity. Last Week’s Rank - #2 3. George Conditt (Sr- Corliss) - The big guy has put up numerous triple dou-
bles this season. We’re definitely looking for George to make some noise in the playoffs against better competition before he heads to Iowa State with Talen Horton-Tucker. Corliss’s first round matchup with North Lawndale will be a big test. Last Week’s Rank - #3 4. Javon Freeman (Sr- Whitney Young) - Vonno (nephew of Chicago legend Marcus Liberty) has been big for the Dolphins all year and you can never count them out the way they’re led by head coach Ty Slaughter. Valparaiso is getting a heck of an athlete and competitor next year. Last Week’s Rank - #4 5. Xavier Pinson (Sr- Simeon) - It came down to Georgetown, Wisconsin and Missouri and the “X-factor” chose Cuonzo Martin and the Tigers in Missouri next season. A 3-star player, he’s gonna bring some excitement to their backcourt for the next few years. He’s been a lethal weapon off the bench for the Wolverines all year.
