Attorney James Montgomery Sr. to Discuss New Book on Race, Law and Justice James D. Montgomery Sr., one of the nation’s premier criminal and civil attorneys, will be the featured speaker during the 2018 Nation Studies series presented by Third World Press Foundation (TWPF) and the Institute of Positive Education (IPE). As part of his presentation, Montgomery will read from his recently published authorized biography “Full Circle: Race, Law & Justice— Inside my Life,” coauthored by Walter M. Perkins and Michelle Thompson and published by TWPF. Montgomery served as first Corporation Council for Chicago’s first Black mayor, Harold Washington, and was the principal and licensee for Johnny Cochran’s national law firm. He also won the civil trial for the family of slain Black Panther Fred Hampton. The book is set against the racialized backdrop of Chicago and America over the last 60 years. In process since May 2015, the title resulted from the realizations that many issues faced by the Black community decades ago remain problems today: police brutality, economic discrimination, educational inequality, and unfair housing practices, among others. The book shares one man’s journey to realize the American Dream and the hell he went through to get there. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, at IPE/Betty Shabazz Academy, 7825 S. Ellis Ave, from 3-5 p.m. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The Faces of Cryptocurrency Trading in Chicago

A group of African American cryptocurrency traders pause for a picture after completing their January group meeting; (top row, l-r): Sundiata Obike, Jilea Hemmings, Arielle Butler, Hollis Washington, Robin Steele - James; (bottom row (l-r)): Augusta Cotton and E. Toi Mitchell By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer For a group of African Americans on Chicago’s South Side, what started as a casual meet-up of like-minded individuals interested in cryptocurrency, blockchain, and everything in between has evolved into a makeshift family hoping to guide each other to generational wealth. Jilea Hemmings, who brought a group of cryptocurrency traders together, said she was first introduced to cryptocurrency by her father in November 2017. She decided to host events to entice interested persons who craved more information about the various cryptocurrencies available. “I started this group because I was looking for like-minded folks in the community who had an interest in crypto or were new to crypto and wanted to learn more and share our ideas and grow together,” said Hemmings. Hemmings eventually cultivatTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The group has been in existence less than seven months. Currently, each member invests their own personal resources into their cryptocurrency of choice. In the future the group may draw their resources together for a collective fund for trading, according to Hemmings. “Everyone in the group contributes and offers different insight and prospective, and we just want to make sure the people who continue to join the group have the same mindset and are looking at generational wealth as their goal,” said Hemmings. But what exactly is cryptocurrency/blockchain? According to Blockgeeks.com, cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency that has

no intrinsic value, no physical form, and its supply is not determined by a centralized bank. Blockchain is a decentralized digital database that records transactions where value is exchanged and its receipts can be seen and verified within the network. The transactions are recorded in chronological order thus building upon each other, which gives blockchain its name. The Defender was invited to attend one of Hemmings’ group’s meeting in January. The group typically gathers together in the high rise Hyde Park apartment of one of their members to discuss trends, share a meal, and enjoy one another’s company. During this particular visit, the meeting was broadcasted on Facebook Live to the Facebook group “Black Crypto Investing,” which falls under the umbrella of the “Financial Juneteenth www.chicagodefender.com

Black Crypto Investing Community” Facebook page which is linked to Dr. Boyce Watkins. Dr. Watkins did not respond to the Defender’s email request for an interview before publishing. The recording of the meeting to the Black Crypto Investing group received more than 10,000 views since it was posted. The Black Crypto Investing group has more than 61,000 members to date. Robin Steele-James, who had been invested in cryptocurrency prior to joining the group, was looking for a new way to find revenue. “Just like a lot of people I heard about Bitcoin and wanted to know how I could get into it,” said Steele-James. Hollis Washington, a member of the group who has been involved with cryptocurrency less

than a year, said he made $55,000 on one of his first trades. Unfortunately, those gains did not last for long. “[By] not taking the advice of the group that $55,000 turned into $1,000 really quick, so I’m really glad to be around a bunch of people who are concerned with my financial health, their financial health, and really coming together to make some changes to impact our lives and the members of our families,” said Washington. While Washington retold the details of his ill-fated decision, the jovial mood in the room was similar to that of a relative retelling an embarrassing story of theirs for the hundredth time at a family reunion. Arielle Butler, a member of the group, who Washington warmly refers to as his little sister, playfully ribbed him saying, “I’m the youngest so I don’t have all that fear that Hollis has...they don’t listen to me.” Washington’s comments continued on page 4

following the laughter strikes a hard note with most neophyte cryptocurrency traders. The group members all nodded in agreement. “We are learning; please do not take anything we are saying as expert advice,” he said. “We’re just regular people making our way through crypto. We’ve made mistakes.” The group identified these lessons so far for prospective cryptocurrency enthusiasts/traders: Lessons •Buy low/Sell high •Look at 24 hour high/low •Use non-traditional times for selling/buying •Take your profits •Don’t be afraid to reposition Tools •Find a partner •Coin stats, coin market stats Despite the impressive number of members in The Black Crypto 4 March 21 - 27, 2018

Investing group, historically (to use the term loosely) African Americans are less likely to be aware of cryptocurrency compared to Caucasians and Hispanics, according to a Jan. 2015 report by The Atlantic entitled, “Why Are So Few Black People Using Bitcoin?” The article referenced a study conducted by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors and the Massachusetts Division of Banks made in May 2014. However, with stories like that of rapper 50 Cent claiming to have unknowingly made millions from cryptocurrency (and then later denying it), we will more than likely see the trading of cryptocurrency within the Black community rise over time. In an effort to gain a greater insight into blockchain/cryptocurrency, the Defender spoke with Phil Gomes, director of communications at the Chicago Blockchain Center (CBC) about the entire industry. Launched in June 2017 the CBC intends to maximize the potential of local blockchain-based

tech. CBC has created a space for guest speakers, workshops, hackathons meetups among other additional services to partners. The CBC office is located in downtown Chicago at 20 W. Kinzie St. Gomes offered an anecdote he heard from the founder of the CBC, Matthew Roszak, as he described the early days of learning how to use Bitcoin. “[Using Bitcoin is like] filleting your own blowfish because if you nix the wrong gland, the whole thing is spoiled with blowfish poison. [Roszak’s] recommendation is lock yourself in your room and read for a weekend,” said Gomes. “I do think cryptocurrency is going to be very transformative in terms of giving banking like services to hundreds of millions and even billions of people who don’t have access to it all over the world.” Gomes acknowledged how discouraging it must be for some to learn about the high price tag of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies www.chicagodefender.com

may have, but he asserted that should not be seen as a barrier to entry, saying a Bitcoin can be subdivided many, many times over. He suggested people should download a free app and get started. “People shouldn’t be sitting around thinking that they can’t get into it,” said Gomes. “Once you’re holding Bitcoin or whatever crypto, then you start exploring what can be done with it.” The future possibilities for owners of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies can be staggering. “Right now it’s not at a point where you can go to a coffee shop and pay with Bitcoin, you’re better off using regular payment mechanisms or something like that, but you can imagine scenarios where you would want to say ‘hey, let’s transact in this currency’,” said Gomes. “If you’ve got a willing buyer or a willing seller and agreed upon exchange medium, then you have the beginning of an economy.”

The CBCs founding partners include: •Blockchain Education Network, a global network of universities innovating with blockchain technology •Blog, a leading enterprise blockchain software company. •Chamber of Digital Commerce, the world’s leading trade association representing the blockchain industry •CME Group, the world’s largest derivatives marketplace •DRW, a Chicago-based principal trading firm and venture capital investor •FinTEx Chicago, a financial technology trade association State of Illinois Blockchain Initiative, a comprehensive blockchain technology initiative of The State of Illinois To learn more about the Chicago Blockchain Center, visit http:// chicagoblockchain.org/index.html. POLITICS

Robin Kelly Speaks Out on Gun Violence and More By Kerris Guinn Defender Contributing Writer U.S. Representative Robin Kelly never planned on becoming an elected official, she just knew that she always wanted to give back to her community. After completing her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Bradley University and her master’s degree in Counseling, Kelly began dedicating herself to community-oriented work. She served as a director for multiple institutions including a nursery, youth shelter, and minority student services for her alma mater, Bradley University. Kelly focused on making a difference in people’s lives on a local level until a gentleman suggested that she run for State Representative in 2002. She decided to take his advice and successfully garnered a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives. “I guess you can say that the rest is history,” said U.S Rep. Kelly when referring to what inspired her to become involved in politics. Although initially facing the adversity of not getting elected for Illinois State Treasurer, a position that seemed like a good fit

after serving as Chief of Staff for Alexi Giannoulias for three years, Kelly’s political aspirations were undeterred; she ran and successfully served as the Cook County Chief administrative officer for two years before getting elected as the Illinois 2nd Congressional District Representative for the U.S House. As a congresswoman, Kelly has been working to create bills that address and create tangible reform for issues such as gun violence and affordable education. Kelly has been working to stop gun violence and create a standardized law that could be applicable across the United States. “Some states have very, very, lax gun laws and some states have stricter gun laws, but we need to nationalize legislation [to deter] guns being brought from one state to another,” Kelly said. “You can see--New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have similar laws and they are allies and you see less issues with guns.” Whereas Illinois is currently experiencing an influx of gun crimes as pointed out by the Gun Trace Report of 2017 because it is a state with strict gun laws surrounded by states with decreased regulation. “That’s why we need national

Robin Kelly laws to help stop that,” said Kelly. She has created bills such as: The Recognizing Gun Violence as a Public Health Emergency Act (H.R. 5161), which would allow the Surgeon General to submit an annual report to Congress that would detail the effects of gun violence on public health. Kelly hopes that the report will detail the total of deaths, disabilities, trauma, or economic hardships stemming from gun violence, thus providing the public and policy makers with the tools necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the impact of gun

violence and spurring informed decisions and increased public safety. “It’ll help with creating data, and if gun violence is recognized as a crisis or state of emergency, then resources can be redirected to address it,” the congresswoman said. Developing a Surgeon General warning for guns through the Firearms Safety Act (H.R. 5162) is also on the agenda for Kelly, who pointed out that the warning is available for objects such as cribs, teddy bears and strollers, but not guns. This regulation would create improved regulation as far as the design of guns and ammunition, which would promote safety and decrease accidental deaths caused by guns. Moreover, Kelly wants to take precautions to keep guns out of the hands of the violent and mentally ill by enacting The Keeping Guns from High Risk Individuals Act (H.R. 5163). This bill would prohibit firearm ownership for dangerous individuals, including stalkers and those guilty of violent crimes on a national level. But, Kelly pointed out: “Nothing will stop everything-- some people say ‘that wouldn’t help this, that wouldn’t help that, but we have to

take the first steps.” “We’ve done absolutely nothing [on a national level] to keep guns from high risk individuals so many people have lost their lives or have been maimed because people have gotten out of jail and purchased guns easily,” Kelly said. “There has been no progress, I’ve been there five years and they have not bought one gun violence prevention bill to the floor and that’s why we have to change who’s in Congress because The Speaker will not bring a bill to the floor for gun safety.” Kelly is also working to try to decrease interest rates on loans to make education more accessible and affordable to future college students. She said she also encourages people to save money throughout the years to take on the burden of tuition fees. Kelly’s advice to anyone looking to get involved in politics is to get involved with local government, even if it’s something small. “The library board, the municipal school board, state rep. There’s a lot of different positions that people can look at, not just Congress... Because local government is where the rubber meets the road frankly…There’s many ways to get your feet wet.”

COMMUNITY Near West Side Youth Educate Community on Cost Saving Energy Opportunities On Chicago’s Near West Side, over one hundred students at Galileo Scholastic Academy recently taught their neighbors about the importance of renewable energy resources and the resulting environmental impacts. At the Energizing Student Potential (ESP) Energy Fair, students led hands-on demonstrations and explained complex conservation initiatives to help hundreds of community members visualize a more sustainable future. “I think solar energy is the most important renewable resource,” said Jalien Baker, an 8th grader and emerging energy expert. “It’s safe and sustainable and allows us to avoid burning fuel when using cars and other equipment. Today we’re using a powerful lightbulb to replicate the sun to generate power in our solar oven. We’re using aluminum to trap the heat from the light in a dark box that is heating and cooking our food for us.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Supported by the Exelon Foundation, Galileo’s eighth grade students have become local energy experts as they have worked to master energy-focused STEM curriculum through the ESP program. “Today is a demonstration of how empowering this education has been for my students,” said Bryan Lopez, a science teacher and Energizing Student Potential coordinator at Galileo Scholastic Academy. “My students are exploring extraordinary topics from demonstrating the use of solar power to a campus-wide energy audit that has identified real cost-saving solutions at Galileo.” ESP is designed to empower teachers in the classroom with the support and resources they need to help students explore energy-related STEM curriculum and careers. Galileo Scholastic Academy students have tested wind turbines, conducted energy audits, explored clean energy alternatives,

and experimented with cost-saving tools, such as LED lighting and smart meters. “We’ve discovered that a lot of renewable energy resources are safer for our environment,” said Mion Fuije, an 8th grader at Galileo Scholastic Academy. “From solar panels to wind and hydro turbines, these alternatives are important because they won’t run out and it’s a sustainable model for the future.” Supported by the largest clean electricity producer in the country, Exelon, and other major energy providers, ESP directly impacted more than 38,000 students and nearly 300 teachers in Illinois, the District of Columbia, and Pennsylvania during the 2016-2017 academic year. Galileo Scholastic Academy was one of 110 Illinois schools to utilize ESP last year; in the 2017-2018 academic year, the program has expanded to 40 additional schools statewide. www.chicagodefender.com

As the debate continues over the future of energy in the U.S. and around the world, industry insiders say that now is the time for African American consumers and businesses to step up and help shape America’s energy policy. The country’s demographics are changing. According to the Census Bureau, the U.S. population, as a whole, is expected to become majority-minority in 2044. “The minority population is projected to rise to 56 percent of the total in 2060, compared with 38 percent in 2014,” the Census Bureau reported. Forward-thinking industry leaders have taken notice and are working to recruit and train an increasingly diverse labor force. According to the American Petroleum Institute’s “State of American Energy 2018” report, as the baby boomers retire and the oil and natural gas industry expands, job opportunities in the industry will continue to grow over the next couple of decades, requiring more workers. Researchers project that nearly 1.9 million new job opportunities will be available in the industry by 2035. “According to an IHS study, women and minorities will account for hundreds of thousands of those openings—more than 700,000 African Americans and Hispanics and 290,000 women through 2035,” the report said. During an interview with the NNPA Newswire, Jack Gerard, the president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute, said that the oil and natural gas industry is working to broaden its base in the Black community and increase awareness about the high-paying job opportunities in the industry. Tracey Woods, the vice president of operations at the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE), a Black think tank focused on energy policies, regulations, emerging technologies, and environmental issues, said that it’s

important for potential employees and entrepreneurs, that are interested in getting into the oil and natural gas industry, to understand policy. AABE’s founder, Clarke Watson, understood how critical it was for Blacks to not only understand energy policy, but to also be involved in the planning and implementation of America’s policies. According to Watson’s biography on AABE’s website, “Watson worked in the energy industry for decades, eventually starting his own consulting firm. He founded the American Association of Blacks in Energy in 1977 after hearing of a meeting of energy policymakers that had been called by then President Jimmy Carter. No minorities were on the original guest list.” The group’s mission continues today, because energy policies set today can have lasting socioeconomic effects for generations. And when it comes to policies about access to STEM education and investment capital, those economic effects could mean higher wages in the oil and natural gas industry for Black workers and increased business opportunities for entrepreneurs. Woods said that Black energy experts and industry leaders have to talk to people about President Donald Trump’s infrastructure plan and what it means for the Black community. Trump’s infrastructure plan commits “$200 billion in federal funding over 10 years to stimulate state and local spending and private investment,” NPR reported. “Half of the funding, $100 billion, would be used as incentives to entice cities, counties and states to raise at least 80 percent of the infrastructure costs themselves.” The article continued: “That’s a departure from the way many projects are funded now. Funding for federal-aid highways, including interstates, is usually allocated in an 80-20 federal-state split. So, President Trump’s plan would flip that funding burden.” Shortly before the president’s infrastructure plan went public, the Senate Democrats released a “Jobs and Infrastructure Plan” that promised a “historic $1 trillion federal investment to modernize our crumbling infrastructure and create more than 15 million good-paying jobs that American families desperately need.” Woods said that when the Black Press informs the community, Black voters can hold legislators and policymakers accountable. IRS Problems Can Ruin Your Life By Constant W. Watson, III Defender Guest Writer IRS problems have a way of ruining all aspects of your life. And as time goes by, the IRS adds salt to your wounds by adding penalties to what you already owe. It’s like the meter in a taxi cab: the counter keeps going adding more and more charges to that IRS debt—even when you are standing still. Many times, the penalties and interest end up adding up to more than what you actually owe the IRS. However, understanding the relentless measures the IRS takes to collect penalties—and having the right experts on your side—can help you avoid the traps that can drastically impact the way you and 8 March 21 - 27, 2018

your family live. You may be asking yourself, “if I can’t afford to pay my taxes, why do they keep adding penalties?” The IRS doesn’t like being ignored, so this is one way they get your attention. They want to be sure you know they are not going away, and the ongoing letters can often haunt you. If you don’t respond to them, the penalties will continue to add up. Penalties are only the beginning of what they can do to your life. The IRS can have a lot of power over you and can do a lot to make your life miserable. They can freeze your bank accounts and seize all the money you have in them. They also can garnish your wages, taking as much as 75 percent of your

net paycheck. Can you live off of 25 percent of your net pay? The IRS thinks and expects you can. Besides slapping bank levies and wage garnishments on you, they can put a lien on your house, making it nearly impossible to borrow against it to pay the IRS off. And if you sell your house, the IRS gets their money first from any equity there is. Federal tax liens can prevent you from borrowing any money—except from those highcharging payday loan stores. An IRS lien makes it harder to rent an apartment, get a car, and obtain any kind of credit. It can even jeopardize your job. most brutal collection agency on the planet. To put it simply, the government wants its money, and they want it now. They are the only creditor in the world that doesn’t need a court order to take your “stuff.” And they have a lot of leverage to do whatever they want. They can even take your personal property, including your car, real estate, motorcycles, jet skis, snowmobiles, boats, jewelry, IRAs, 401Ks, and the list goes on. If you owe them— they will collect. And they are not going to go away. So how do you solve the problem? The only professionals who can represent you before the IRS are attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents. That’s it. However, you

shouldn’t just go to anyone to handle your IRS tax problem. It makes sense to go to a specialist in tax resolution to handle your IRS difficulties. Remember, that for every tax problem, there is a solution. Constant W. Watson III, CPA, CTRS, is both a Certified Public Accountant and one of only ten Certified Tax Resolution Specialists in the State of Illinois certified by the ASTPS. Women’s History Tour Spotlights Contributions By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer It’s not difficult to surmise that the innumerable contributions Black women have made to Black people and to the world will never receive its just recognition. Historically, sexism and racism have caused our nation’s history books and educational institutions to overlook dynamic Black women who have spent their life’s work improving their respective communities. But two women on Chicago’s South Side are doing their part to lift up the historic work of Black women. On Sunday, March 18, Mariame Kaba and Essence McDowell reinvigorated life into the narratives of the city’s historic Black women by providing a tour of Chicago’s South Side that centered around Black women history makers. Kaba and McDowell, both who are educators, activists, and organizers, have created a project entitled “Lifting as they Climbed: Mapping a History of Black Women on Chicago’s South Side.” On this rare sunny Sunday in March, Kaba and McDowell served as tour guides and historians to a gathering of approximately 50 people. The group––diverse and predominantly women––consisted of notable Chicagoans such as Chicago Tribune journalist Lolly Bowean, 49th ward Aldermanic candidate Maria Hadden, and Intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis. The tour began once Kaba and McDowell made their arrival on the corner of Harrison and State, at Jones College Prep. Here Kaba checked attendance and proceeded to give a history lesson on John Jones and Mary Jane Richardson Jones. The Jones’ were abolitionists who were immersed in the small community of 140 Black people in Chicago at the time. Mary Jones was a Black suffragette who welcomed renowned feminist icons like Susan B. Anthony into her home, and also used the house as a resting place on Chicago’s Underground Railroad. McDowell then lead the group to Dearborn Station where tourists boarded a bus

to visit the other local sites, but not before Kaba spoke on the importance of Dearborn Station. Kaba described the deep history of how Dearborn Station acquired the nickname “The Levee.” “The Levee” was known as a vice district that covered a twenty square block span and, according to historian Elizabeth Schlabach, was home to 500 saloons and 500 bordellos housing 3,000 female workers. Black women in this period had limited options for employment. Many were forced into the informal economy selling their services in hairdressing, cooking, and sex. Kaba emphasized how sex work fed homes and aided Black women in their survival of a racist and sexist economy, despite their bodies being valued less than White women. After boarding the bus, tourists received the colorful and informative “Lifting As They Climbed” guidebook. This book was equipped with a map of important points in the city that tell a story about Black women who have impacted the city’s history. It also provides short biographies for women designated at the mapped points. The guidebook can be a valuable tool and makes it possible for readers to conduct their own tours in the future. The gorgeous Quinn Chapel AME Church is what followed Dearborn Station. Kaba stood happily on the church steps to give a brief but enlightening history of Emma Jane Atkinson and Amanda Jane Berry Smith. To both tour guides’ surprise, a parishioner invited the entire tour inside the church to receive a firsthand experience of what was once a place of refuge for enslaved Africans. The bus moved further into Bronzeville and stopped at the 3435 S. Indiana Ave, the first home of The Chicago Defender. Lolly Bowean, journalist for the Chicago Tribune, shared the history of the Defender’s beloved Ethel Payne. Payne worked for the Defender for over 20 years and with a resume covering many international figures, she became known as the “First Lady of the Black Press.” The talk of the

Tour participants look at guidebook as they learn about Black Women’s Contributions. Defender extended to mention a woman by the name of Zelda Jackson Ormes, one of the first Black syndicated cartoonists. Other notable places on the tour included: the home of Gwendolyn Brooks, Ida B. Wells-Barnett’s house, Etta Moten’s house, and Lillian Armstrong’s house. McDowell lectured on the celebrated history of famed artist and educator Margaret Burroughs. Not only did the tourists find out that Burroughs was responsible for the creation of the Du Sable Museum (originating in the basement of her home), but they were granted with the opportunity to walk inside the South Side Community Arts Center––the center that Burroughs played a heavy role in creating for Chicago’s Black community and home to much

of her art. The labor that Essence McDowell and Mariame Kaba put into this fascinating interactive snapshot of history is more than admirable. McDowell’s guiding work on the handbook made a sublime combination with Kaba’s infinite bank of knowledge of Black history. “Lifting As They Climb” was a superb learning experience that can embolden the pride one has for their city and the phenomenal women who gave it poetry, education, abolition, jazz, but most of all…their life. The Greenbook: The Historical Travel Guide By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play During the era of Jim Crow laws, when open and often legally prescribed discrimination against non-whites was widespread, New York City mailman Victor Hugo Green published the “Negro Motorist Greenbook” from 19361967. Although inescapable racial discrimination and poverty limited Black car ownership, the emerging African-American middle class bought automobiles as soon as they could; however, they faced a variety of dangers and inconveniences along the road, from refusal of food and lodging to arbitrary arrests. In response, Green wrote his guide to services and places relatively friendly to African-Americans, eventually expanding its coverage from the New York area to much of North America, as well as founding a travel agency. Calvin A. Ramsey, adapter and co-author of “Ruth and the Green Book,” takes us back in time during the 50s where the Davis family opens their home to Black

travelers in the South during Jim Crow/segregation and the birth of Civil Rights activism. This poignant story is also an exploration of the influence of Civil Rights on contemporary American issues. The play takes place during a weekend when an African American family is celebrating the arrival of Dr. W.E. B. DuBois for a lecture. However, an unexpected guest arrives who happens to be a Jewish Holocaust survivor, and a chain of events unfolds prompting the realization that racism and anti-Semitism should no longer be overlooked. Patriarch Dan Davis, played by Henri Watkins, and his wife Barbara Davis, played by Stacie Doublin, prepare for a much-anticipated weekend; however nothing can prepare them for the storm that is headed straight to their safe haven home that “The Green Book” travelers will endure upon their stay. Daughter Neena Davis (Demetra Drayton) is becoming a woman right before her parents’ eyes but unfortunately they cannot see her as a young adult because they are blinded by helping others along their traveling journey. She wants to be seen by him as a woman, so she is ready to look and act the part as his assistant, until her parents finally take notice of her actions. House guests Captain George Smith (Terence Sims) and his educated wife Jacqueline Smith (Quenna Lene’) stay at the Davis household has come to an end. George would like to stay to eat breakfast that his wife requested that Barbara cook; but she has now changed her mind so that they

can get on the road and make it to their next destination safely. Worried that George’s uniform may cause a raucous, she is upset that he will not take it off while they are traveling. Before the Davis family heads out to their event, Barbara’s sister calls to inform them that she has sent over another house guest; bothered by the timing Barbara hesitantly agrees to let the individual stay. Upon the arrival of Jacob Levinsky (Michael Stock), a Jewish Holocaust survivor, Keith is upset and insists that Levinsky is at the wrong location. The Davis family is shocked that a man who is not African-American is considering lodging at their home. Nonetheless they agree despite how Keith feels and attends their event leaving him there in the house to get settled in. During Jacob’s time alone with Keith, their conversation strikes up a painful past for Jacob. Keith then realizes their similarities. During this revelation the storm outside has now crossed over to coming inside of the Davis house

when former house guests George and Jacqueline Smith return because George has been attacked at the gas station that Keith recommended as safe. Director Ilesa Duncan did an excellent job of showing us the many dangers that African-Americans went through to travel through the South during the Jim Crow era and how “The Green Book” was used as a traveler’s guide to make it to the next safe location. We highly recommend that you see this phenomenal play at the Pegasus Theatre so that you can experience a part of “The Green Book” history! Society of Mannequins 2018 Luncheon

Lewis rips the runway.

Lewis in another classy and fabulous outfit.

Seventy-five years ago, the Society of Mannequins parent organization, the Association of Mannequins, was formed as an organization to assist Black women who wanted to break into the fields of fashion and modeling. They chose to draw attention to elegant, well-groomed and accomplished Black women by announcing and publicizing in Chicago’s press those women selected each year as the “Ten Best Dressed Black Women of Chicago.” The Society of Mannequins was formed in 2000 to continue and expand the vision of the parent company. The Society’s mission is to award scholarships to needy and talented African American students and to recognize and honor impeccably groomed African American Women who serve as exemplary role models and outstanding leaders in their fields and communities. Women of a certain caliber are chosen and brought together to inspire each other and

the community, to highlight their achievements, and most importantly, to raise scholarship money for students of African American descent. Each year, the Society pays homage to Women’s History Month with its annual presentation luncheon, living up to its reputation as one of the most anticipated, glamourous affairs of the year. The Chicago Defender’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Dyanna Knight Lewis, was a 3rd Year Honoree as one of the “Ten Best Dressed African American Women in Chicago.” We salute Dyanna and the other impeccably dressed honorees who show us how to keep it classy— on the outside and the inside. The popular and well-attended event was held at Tuscany Falls Banquets & Events in Mokena, IL. This year’s theme was “Empowering Women Through Fashion.”

Women’s History Month: A Salute to Connie Lindsey By Elle Smith Defender Contributing Writer March is Women’s History Month, and we get the opportunity to run across plenty of powerful women, right in the Chicago area. Connie Lindsey, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., is one of the most amazing women currently gracing the highways and byways of Chicago. Lindsey is a huge advocate of education; she received her BA in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Certificate from the Harvard Business School Executive Education Corporate Social Responsibility Program. Her education and her general business savvy has afforded her such opportunities as currently holding the title of the Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity & Inclusion at Northern Trust in Chicago. She is the first African-American woman in the history of the firm to be named Executive Vice President, and with such an accomplishment comes much responsibility. She has never forgotten what her troop leader in Milwaukee told her as a young girl, and that was “Connie you matter, and don’t you let anyone tell you that you don’t! You are not what IS the matter, you matter!” and she proudly tells every young girl she meets: “you matter, be courageous, think boldly and believe you are worthy of achieving your biggest goals and dreams. WOMEN’S HISTORY

From the Archives: Women in Business Whether recognized or not, Black women have long been successful business women--often creating revenue streams from gifts and talents well before “entrepreneur” was a common word. Women have worked hard, served others, and taken care of their families and communities for a very long time. At last, we recognize their hard work and salute their amazing achievements. Take a look at some of the achievers found in the Chicago Defender’s archives.

Tell ‘Em Why You Mad, Girl! By Corliss Garner 12 Voices It’s March. We’re in Women’s History Month. Did you celebrate International Women’s Day? The clocks have sprung forward and there is more sun in the days ahead. So you ask, why are you Corliss Garner mad, girl? Because I am Black, female and broke. •The median wealth of a single Black woman is $200 compared to $15,640 for single White women. •The median earned wages for Black women is $606 a week compared to $740 for White women. •Compared to 29% of White women, 37% of Black women over the age 65 rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income. #PressForProgress

Black women often end up at the bottom of most financial and economic indicators. These constant messages of not enough or less than, coupled with systemic barriers, are enough to make you wanna holler. I certainly get frustrated and sometimes, down right angry. But, guess what? Ain’t-Nobody-Got-Time-Fa-Dat! I acknowledge the feelings, but I can’t stay there long. Pressing for progress means you have to keep it moving! For sure there are many systemic headwinds against us, both historically and present day. But that has never stopped us from pressing for progress. As Black women, we have seen strong examples of perseverance and leadership from our mothers and grandmothers. It seemed like magic. In fact, I think it was #BlackGirlMagic. They made a way out of no way. Ladies, let’s follow in the footsteps of our mothers and grandmothers. Take a page from the book of our favorite auntie who swiftly destroys all adversaries with a sharp tongue and a fierce, over-the-spectacle side eye. Now is the time to channel our inner

auntie Maxine Waters by #ReclaimingOurPower as we continue to press for progress. Black, female and broke doesn’t have to be our story. We have the power to define our narrative and lead progress in our communities. There will always be headwinds. However, to quote Dr. Janice Jackson, the new CEO of Chicago Public Schools, “we are built for this.” Black women are creative, resourceful and above all, resilient. Imagine the narrative change and positive shifts in financial and economic indicators when we leverage our natural talents to set and accomplish our financial goals, when we prioritize our future financial health over instant gratification, when we are financially proactive rather than reactive, when we bravely call out pay disparity by negotiating equitable salaries, when we band together to support each other in business, when we model stellar fiscal behavior and pass along wisdom to our children and the generations ahead. We are indeed built for this. When women are empowered with education, the benefits are felt exponentially throughout their

entire community. Our issues are deep, complex and multi-layered. However, keep placing one foot in front of the other. Keep pressing for progress as only you can. The road ahead will become clearer. If you are not sure where to start, join me at the Black Women’s Expo on Saturday, April 7 at McCormick Place, 2301 S. King Drive, Chicago, IL. I will be moderating two panel discussions entitled Fuel Your Potential: Capital Options to Start and Grow Your Business (11am to 12:30pm) and Your Financial Life: From Credit Management to Wealth Management (1pm to 2:30pm). Hear from financial experts, successful entrepreneurs, capital providers and banking professionals as we share tools that will help change the narrative and reclaim our power. The Kingdom Kees of Reborn Identity: The Remake By Reggie Kee 12 Voices First and foremost, NO – this is not a scoop on the remake of The Bourne Identity franchise! The title is merely a play on the franchise’s title. To set the stage for this month’s column, I am going to need to Reggie and break down Quiana Kee the movie, though. The basic premise is this: there’s a covert government operation that trains assassins to go on international missions. To be initiated into this program, soldiers are brainwashed with new identities (think Manchurian Candidate). After a particularly disturbing mission, one soldier of fortune is jolted out of his conditioning but cannot remember anything about THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

himself outside of his name – Jason Bourne – and how to fight for his life. Realizing he can’t continue killing, he hunts down the operatives who run the program to find answers regarding his true identity. Oh, and since they’re aware that he’s gone maverick on them, they send other assassins to kill him. Having set the stage, let’s jump right into it. This movie is a great analogy for who you are in God’s Kingdom. I’m sure you’ve heard this old church adage before: “you are both fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God.” Just so you know, here’s the source of that statement: Genesis 1:26 and Psalm 139:14. That may be familiar enough to you, but how many of you know that you were made twice?... That’s right, I said MADE twice, not born twice! Yes – all Christians are born again; but have you ever thought about it from this angle: we’re born twice because we were made twice? Hear me out. God desired to make someone in His image and likeness to re-

store order to the earth once satan and his crew were booted out of heaven for going against God’s will. To impart such dominion in who would become His Heavenly ambassador on earth, God had to first make a being that was LIKE Him. God is a Spirit, so when He makes man in His image, He does so BEFORE forming man of the corrupted dust of the ground (see Genesis 2:7)*. God makes man in His image, blesses him, then ends the sixth day. The “second creation”* of man happens on the seventh day in Genesis 2. Spirit comes before flesh as the number 1 comes before the number 2. Believe me, there are crazier, less biblical theories about why there are two creation stories of mankind in Genesis. One goes like this. The first creation involved some female entity named Lilith who rebelled, causing God to create Eve from Adam’s rib. That Lilith, now a vengeful spirit, goes about trying to steal the souls of babies which is why we sing lullabies; on some ol’ “Bye Felicia!” type stuff (lullaby www.chicagodefender.com

= “Lilith Bye”). Crazy right? Let me tell you what’s NOT crazy, though. Many of us are running with/from sins. We may not be assassins like Jason Bourne, but sin has caused us to do some pretty messed up stuff… Or maybe we are… since the person that hates another is already a murderer, according to scripture, or perhaps because we use death more than life in the power of our tongue. Either way, one day we wake up from our sinful lifestyle and realize that this is not what we want to be. We go seeking the truth – wanting to believe that we were purposed to be and do better. We go looking for our Creator; all the while, His former soldiers are seeking to steal, kill and destroy us before we get a chance to return to our Source (Abba in Hebrew… Father in English) akin to the agents that hunted Neo as he sought out the Architect of the Matrix. One of the climactic moments in this Bourne franchise is when Jason’s real name is divulged to him: David Webb. He has a flash-

back to the moment his Bourne identity was created and remembers being told “You are no longer David Webb.” Well, I’m here to tell you – in Christ, you are no longer Jason Bourne. You are no longer a sinner unreconciled to God – belonging to a world separated from God (which is the TRUE definition of death, by the way). In fact, through Christ, God sees you how He originally created you. You were made to be an extension of God. You were made BEFORE sin got a hold of you in the earth. Your name is kingly in Christ. Your name king is David Webb. Reggie and Quiana Kee have known each other for over 20 years and were married in 2004. They were licensed to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in 2015 at the Kingdom Advancement Center in Elgin, Ill., where they currently reside. They have two children and are the co-founders of Ink Well Spoken and Manu Forti Ministries, which serve as the marketplace and faith-based programs for their motivational speaking initiatives. The Bigs Presents: This Week’s Top 5 Hoopers Our Final Four Are Proving That It’s Not How You Start....It’s How You Finish By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS The season has come to an end and we’ve narrowed The BIGS Hooper Of The Year down to our final 4 players! Below we take a look at the finalists and give their case for the award... Talen Horton-Tucker (Sr- Simeon Wolverines) - “Talo” took his game to the next level as he elevated a very talented Simeon squad to a top 10 national ranking and a city title during the regular season. The Iowa State University commit was in his bag all season but fell short of the ultimate goal (with what head coach Robert Smith said could be the most talented team he’s coached) ...a state title. There’s no denying that he is worth the price of admission and bright things are in store for this young man! Ayo Dosunmu (Sr- Morgan Park Mustangs) - Ayo missed 12 of the Mustangs 34 games (9-3 without him) due to a serious ankle injury. He returned at the start of the CPS playoffs and MP lost to Whitney Young on a buzzer beater in the quarterfinals. They finished the season 8-0 on the way to backto-back 3A state titles. Dosunmu set a new record for points scored (28) in a championship game and ended his high school career as a winner. He will take his talents to

the University Of Illinois and head coach Brad Underwood where expectations are high, but Dosunmu has proved without a shadow of a doubt that he’s willing to put in all the work necessary to succeed at the next level. Javon Freeman-Liberty (SrWhitney Young Dolphins) - The most athletic of the finalists, “Vonno” played at a high level on both ends of the floor all season and was able to lead the Dolphins back to the 4A championship game. His versatility and elite competitiveness have been the keys to his success in his high school career as a Seton Sting and Whitney Young Dolphin. Freeman is headed to Valparaiso in the fall and should be the perfect fit. He is battle tested and is a prime candidate to flourish at the next level. Dannie Smith (Sr- Orr Spartans) - “Danno Buckets” had an outstanding season as he helped lead the Spartans to back-to-back 2A state titles. He was tough, played inside out and a was a huge leader down the stretch for head coach Lou Adams. When a big play was needed, they put the ball in his hands and he came through in the clutch. Orr was as talented of a team as we saw this season and the guys knew they could count on Dannie when it mattered most. On a special Orr team, Dannie will be remembered as one of its bright- Talen Horton-Tucker (Simeon), Ayo Dosunmu(Morgan Park), Javon Freeman-Liberty (Whitney Young), Dannie Smith (Orr) are the final four finalist for the The Bigs 2018 Hooper Of The Year est stars. Dolphins and Mustangs Head Downstate Looking to Repeat As Champs! By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS For the Whitney Young Dolphins and the Morgan Park Mustangs, going “back to back” was the only thing on their minds this past weekend in Peoria for the Final Four of the IHSA state tournament. Watching their 2A counterparts, the Spartans of Orr Academy complete their repeat campaign the weekend before, put the CPS representatives in posiTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

tion for a clean sweep of boys basketball state championships. Let’s recap how it all went down! Mustangs Roll on The Way To 3A Repeat After a dominant 68-51 win over Marion Catholic in the final four, the Morgan Park Mustangs pulled one step away from repeating as class 3A champs. Standing in their way were the Springfield Southeast Spartans. Last year, a foot injury kept Ayo Dosunmu on the sideline as he watched his teammates bring home a 3A

championship; this year, it was the Ayo show. Knocking down 8 of his 14 shots with three from deep on the way to an IHSA record 28 points, the Mustangs wouldn’t be denied on the way to a 71-56 W. It was the Mustangs’ 4th Championship in 6 years. For head coach Nick Irvin, his 4th title puts him in a tie for the 2nd most all-time. Cameron Burrell, Marcus Watson and Adam Miller added 11 apiece for Morgan Park. Dolphins Go to OT, but Bellville West Pulls Out Tough W for 4A Crown www.chicagodefender.com

If anybody had forgotten that the Dolphins were the defending 4A state champions, their run to Peoria in quest for a repeat reminded everybody who wore the crown. But in the final matchup of the year, junior EJ Lidell and the boys from Bellville West would emerge as the last team standing. In an all-out battle, Bellville West denied Whitney Young’s repeat hopes with a stunning 60-56 overtime victory in the 4A state title game. EJ Lidell, who was named Gatorade’s Illinois Player of The Year, helped lead his team to their

first ever state championship. Bellville West’s win over Whitney Young is first time since 2004 a team not from the Chicagoland area wins the 4A championship. Lawrence Brazil III led the Maroons with 18 points, and E.J. Liddell (17) and Keith Randolph, Jr. (13) also scored in double figures. Belleville West got to the foul line 38 times and made 27 shots. Javon Freeman paced Whitney Young (28-8) with 17 points and Xavier Castaneda, who finished 4-for-6 on 3-point tries, had 14. March 21 - 27, 2018 23
