CITY NEWS
Winnie Mandela Remembered As news of the death of Winnie Mandela spread, many tributes poured in, remembering the mother of the apartheid revolution and former wife of Nelson Mandela. The following statement is from Minister Louis Farrakhan: It is with great sadness, accompanied by great joy, that we heard the news that Winnie Madikizela Mandela, the mother and the heartbeat of the revolution, had passed. The sadness that I feel and we feel is that this great woman of struggle has been called back to the only life-giver that there is, Almighty God Allah. But the joy is that the heartbeat of the revolution can never die. For the revolution cannot die until true freedom, justice and equality come to every member of the suffering Black people of South Africa and Africa, and all those who suffer injustice. When I visited South Africa on a chartered flight, when I stepped off the plane to fulfill an appointment with President Nelson Mandela, there was a man at the bottom of the stairs of the plane wrapped in chains. I looked at him and the journey continued to a beautiful five-star hotel in Johannesburg. And when we got out of our vehicles to go into the hotel that same man was there in chains. When I went up to my room I said to myself, and to others, he is telling us that South Africa is not yet free. Mother Winnie Mandela in our meeting said to me that the enemy’s promises of tens of thousands of homes and
Winnie Mandela electricity were never realized. A political compromise for the sake of non-violence was made so we would gain political power, a national anthem, a flag, and a place at the United Nations. But, the yet unrealized dream of the ownership of the wealth of South Africa returning to the Blacks remains. So when I met Mother Winnie Mandela at her home and we talked, she still was the heartbeat of the revolution. And today under a new president with new vision, the compromise has ended and the struggle begins anew and again.
This struggle can never end with an anthem, with the appearance of political power and lacking the substance of economic power. The heartbeat of the revolution will continue until every square inch of South Africa is liberated and once again in the hands of the Original Owners of that land. May the memory of Mother Winnie Mandela and the struggle that her husband and she waged always be remembered. So long as the struggle for power and control of the country—which has never been fully in the hands of the original people of South Africa—is unrealized, the heartbeat of Winnie Mandela will continue to send the life of liberation through it. Not only to free every corner of South Africa but all of Africa must eventually go free. And the wicked ones who have stolen the land and the wealth of Africa must eventually give it all back or it shall be taken back by God and the people who refuse to let that heartbeat of true liberation, freedom, justice and equality die. She lives and the struggle continues until total victory. As-Salaam Alaikum. Peace unto all who struggle. How Chicago Youth Are Following King Today
Youth protesting the building of a $95 million police training facility. There is no debate that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination on April 4, 1968, is one of the most important moments in Black History. For many, King’s death at the Lorraine Motel holds significant symbolism as the end of a nonviolent church-based Civil Rights Movement, and the complete transitioning into a militant Black Power movement of self-determination. Today, 50 years after King’s death, young Black people who are two and three generations separated from King’s era, are now acting on his philosophies with the nuance and vigor of their Black Power ancestors. In Chicago, their call is “#NoCopAcademy!” “We demand no cop academy. Since my adolescence, I’ve been personally targeted by police. But I represent thousands who have been brutalized by the CPD, Rahm Emanuel, and his cronies-- like Laquan McDonald and Dominique Franklin who were both murdered by CPD,” belted Ethos, a community organizer from Circles and Ciphers, during a #NoCopAcadamy THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
sit-in at City Hall. “I implore them to listen to the youth #NoCopAcademy.” #NoCopAcademy is a multi-organization grassroots campaign that seeks to prevent Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposed $95 million police academy. After Mayor Emanuel, the Chicago Police Department, and City Council received a substantial amount of backlash regarding their handling of the Laquan McDonald video, Emanuel introduced legislation that calls for more police training through a newly built facility in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. The #NoCopAcademy campaign includes visits to City Hall, surveying the West Garfield Park community, door-to-door canvassing, strategy meetings, political education workshops, social media blitzes, and nonviolent direct action. These tactics parallel the strategies used in the Chicago Campaign to End Slums and Discrimination, a campaign that infuriated Chicago’s working-class White communities to the point of harm-
ing Dr. King and forcing him to say, ‘‘I have seen many demonstrations in the South but I have never seen anything so hostile and so hateful as I’ve seen here today.’’ The youth behind #NoCopAcademy are depending on grassroots organizing and public disruption, as Dr. King had done in the mid-60s, to create a better Chicago. Last Wednesday, their 5-hour sit-in on the first-floor of city hall garnered mainstream media attention and went viral on social media timelines. Most of the protesters were Black teenagers who were on Spring Break, representing different organizations such as Assata’s Daughters, Simeon’s Young Activists, and Good Kids Mad City. Protesters created a mock cemetery with headstones that listed people who were killed by the Chicago Police and closed schools under Rahm Emanuel. All throughout the day, the teens met resistance. Police told protesters that they couldn’t eat inside of the public building and were prohibited from using public restrooms. Jim Crow imagery www.chicagodefender.com
reared its head when Black teens who were protesting were not allowed to have food but White onlookers were free to eat. An organized sit-in this elaborate had to take a considerable amount of time to prepare, so how did teens learn of such tactics? The #NoCopAcademy Youth Summit On March 24, the youth-led March for Our Lives saturated social media, mainstream publications, and national radio and television programs. The event– featuring a host of student, community, and political organizations–was a coordinated response to the pressing gun violence epidemic making national headway after the recent influx of mass school shootings. While thousands flocked to Chicago’s Union Park to join the multitude participating in the massive rally, about 100 youth on Chicago’s West Side engaged in the free #NoCopAcademy Youth Summit. Students from Bronzeville, Washington Park, West Chatham, West Garfield Park, and Austin all
shared the day thinking, analyzing, discussing, and activating their vision of alternatives to the proposed police academy. The cloudy morning did not deter the many young smiling faces entering the Westside YMCA. The summit began with Page May, a co-founder of Assata’s Daughters, co-facilitating a workshop about the history of the #NoCopAcademy campaign. When May asked attendees about their feelings about the $95 million cop training facility, many young people voiced their displeasure. “$95 mill to cops?!,” said one voice. “That’s crazy. We can use that for more art programs!” Attendees had an array of activities to channel their political passion. In one room dedicated to the arts, people created political signs and buttons. In another room, a “Know Your Rights” workshop taught participants the dangers and responsibilities that come with community cop-watch programs. The Chicago Freedom continued on page 4

School directed an “Oppression 101” workshop where young people learned how to define oppression and tactics to fight against it. Some were treated to a viewing of The Children’s March documentary. The young attendees sat quietly as they watched how children impacted the Civil Rights Movement by defying the orders of the police–and even Dr. King himself–in the name of justice. By showcasing the intergenerational
struggle of the 60s, the youth were able to identify that there has not been much change since the days of yesteryear. Ujimaa Medics (Umedics) made an appearance at the summit. Umedics is responsible for first-response to gunshot victims. Representatives trained a youth group on the how to treat gunshot wounds and best practices in the event of a shooting. The #NoCopAcademy youth summit not only offered a variety of outlets for participants to be civically engaged, but it allowed
youth to freely dictate their level of political engagement. When organizers announced plans to canvass the Austin neighborhood for campaign support, many teens and kids freely volunteered for the unglamorous work. Others stayed behind to join other political activities, converse with friends, or to eat if they were hungry. The most energetic and lively scene was the train takeovers. In an effort to spread awareness about the $95 million Cop Academy, young people boarded the Green Line trains and conducted what is commonly referred to as
“mic-checks” –– a series of loud call-and-response declarations that states protestors’ purpose and demands. These young people are making their own footprints and delivering a new surge of activism post-Laquan McDonald. Dr. King’s legacy is more than just alive; it is being evolved, critiqued, studied, preserved by the people that have been most impacted by Chicago political landscape–the youth. of King, from his march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery, his March in Birmingham for Public Accommodation, to further explaining Dr. King’s controversial viewpoints on the Vietnam War. When asked what the world would look like had Dr. King’s vision been realized, a 44-year-old paralegal student at Roosevelt University said, “If his vision was achieved, Blacks, Whites, Chinese, Korean and Hispanic, Latino and African American, Ethiopian... All those nationalities and ethnicities that we all go by, they will no longer even exist, and we’d all consider ourselves as one world of people regardless of how we look.... We’re all be brothers and sisters... That’s Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.”
When Dr. King called for a boycott of Chicago’s public schools over 50 years ago, I answered. Even though I was still a child then, I could see that something was not right in our schools — that we were not getting what we needed out of them. In answering his call, my family, my friends, my community, stood up and took action to address a problem we saw in our society. In doing so, many of us found our voice and passion for working towards something bigger than ourselves and striving for a better and more just life for all. As we reflect on the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination in Memphis, communities across the country and here in Chicago are taking stock of his life and what it means for our lives today. We look back on that long arc of history spanning the time between April 4, 1968 and today and see how Dr. King and those who answered his calls helped bend that arc towards justice. What’s more, while this anniversary serves as a time to reflect, it is also a call for action to a new generation of community and faith leaders to come make their mark on history. Through initiatives like the I AM 2018 Campaign, the millions-strong Church of God in Christ, AFSCME and others are working to both commemorate this solemn occasion and harness the energy of the moment to help this new generation find their voice and passion to serve. We need this new generation to carry on the work that Dr. King inspired so many of us to do and to protect the gains we have made from the forces that would roll those gains back. And in April, at the site of Dr. King’s Mountaintop speech, we’ll kick off an aggressive voter education and civic engagement program to tackle issues plaguing working families and mobilizing turnout for the 2018 elections and beyond. For the past 38 years I have been Pastor of the People’s Church of Harvest in East Garfield Park. I see every day the challenges our community faces. I see how much of what Dr. King sought to address—violence, inadequate continued on page 4

head on. We are not running from them. We are not in denial. We know the challenges we face and that they are only going to be adequately addressed by the community finding solutions. As Dr. King addressed the plight of sanitation workers, the Church of God in Christ here in Chicago is addressing the plight of ex-offenders with training impact-
ing over 4,000 ex-offenders, many of which have obtained permanent employment. It can’t be caught lacking a good education and economic opportunity. It can’t be caught lacking peace, security and safety. It can’t be caught lacking family and the stable homes our children need to thrive. Our com-

Veracare Nursing Home Workers End Second Strike The Veracare Nursing Home Workers voted to end their seven-day strike this week; however, they are still calling upon owner Israel Davis to stop unfair labor practices. This strike was the second one this year; the first was a one-day strike on Martin Luther King Day this January. The workers returned to the strike line last week in response to Davis’ continued refusal to follow basic labor laws. Having gained the support of resident families, elected officials, and faith leaders during the seven-day long (twelve-hours a day) unfair labor practice strike, workers voted to
return to work this week. However, with the end of the second strike, workers are warning Davis that he’s got two strikes against him – both literally and figuratively – and they are prepared to give him strike three if necessary. The 60 Veracare workers want Davis to end his lawbreaking behavior and settle a fair contract immediately. They say that despite their brave decision to strike, and the outpouring of support that striking workers received by the community including that of Cook County Board Commissioner Jesús
G. “Chuy” García and of gubernatorial candidate J. B. Pritzker, owner Israel Davis has not only failed to stop his unfair labor practices, but has continued to subject workers to new unfair labor practices. In addition to an immediate cessation of unfair labor practices, workers are demanding a fair contract providing for general wage increases, affordable health insurance, recognition of workers’ seniority, overtime pay after eight hours worked, and paid time off. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play Interracial marriage historically was illegal in most parts of the United States, and in 17 states it was not only unlawful, it was dangerous. This bleak and disturbing part of our history continued until June 12, 1967. During Brenda and Rick this period McCain couples of different races fought not only to love each other but to have the right to marry and start a life together-- even if it went against the moral fabric of society. “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” is an American comedy-drama film produced and directed by Stanley Kramer, and written by William Rose; it is about interracial marriage and the battle against racism. The infamous movie starred Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, and Katharine Hepburn, it also featured Hepburn’s niece, Katharine Houghton. This storyline that was ahead of its time has been said by some to have helped the anti-miscegenation laws struck down by the Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia in 1967; this ruling invalidated laws
Sydney Charles, Bryce Gangel and Michael Aaron Pogue. Photo by Michael-Brosilow prohibiting interracial marriage. It was nothing short of an incredible story during a time of turmoil. It was also one of the few films of the time to depict an interracial marriage in a positive light.
Court Theatre continues the 63rd Season with Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner By Todd Kreidler (based on the screenplay by William Rose) Directed by Marti Lyons with Associate Director Wardell Julius Clark March 15 - April 15, 2018 Playwright Todd Kreidler decided to take on this classic story, “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” because it was so thought-provoking that it still resonates today. His stage adaptation brings race relations up close and personal. The story is set in the 1960s in San Francisco, where Matt and Christina Drayton (Tim Hopper and Mary Beth Fisher) live a modern White, upper-class life; they discover that their secure life is about to change suddenly. This change occurs when their daughter Joey (Bryce Gangel) returns home with a renowned Black physician name John Prentice (Michael Aaron Pogue). To make matters worse, she’s only known him for ten days, and she intends to marry him. All of a sudden their longtime broad-minded values of fairness to all seem small-minded when challenged on the front-line with their ideologies. The Draytons, who are professed liberals, instilled in their daughter the idea of racial equality and now find themselves in a

difficult situation with personal questions about the future of their daughter and their family; and Joey and John aren’t the Drayton’s only surprise guests coming to dinner. The acting in “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was great, but we loved the parts played by Sydney Charles as Tillie and Dan Waller as Monsignor Ryan. Charles almost stole the show with her portrayal of Tillie. She was amazingly funny with her spot on performance and Waller was equally brilliant. We have had the pleasure of seeing Sydney Charles in several performances, and she is an exceptional actress worth taking a serious look at as a Jeff Award Winner for her role as Tillie. The play was a delightful and fun production that will make you want to seek out and see the original movie. Sure, it veered a little away from the original and added a few comments while updating a few characters’ persona with a little wit, but it worked out tremendously well. Just like the movie, this play pro-
vides us with this greater than life African-American man that is far above most men in his education and accolades. Dr. John Prentice is the perfect catch until you open your eyes. Is an average Joe with a blacker hue not enough? Our love for the movie and the play seems to always go back to that question. Unfortunately, we still live in a world where both sides frown on interracial marriages between Blacks and Whites. Maybe one day, we can all sit down and look at the character of the person. We genuinely look forward to this dinner. We highly recommended seeing “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” at Court Theatre. Hopefully it will do a little more than entertain you. The cast includes: Sydney Charles (Matilda “Tillie” Banks) Mary Beth Fisher (Christina Drayton) Bryce Gangel (Joanna Drayton) Tim Hopper (Matt Drayton) Michael Aaron Pogue (Dr. John Prentice) Rachel Sledd (Hilary St. George) Dan Waller (Monsignor Ryan) Jacqueline Williams (Mary Prentice) Dexter Zollicoffer (John Prentice, Sr.) THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Let’s Eat: Demera Ethiopian Restaurant By The Black Foodies We have been enjoying Ethiopian cuisine for many years. The flavor profiles are similar to that of Indian cuisine, yet prepared in a manner where the two are easily distinguishable. Last year, while covering the 4th Annual Ethiopian Fest in The Black Foodies C h i c a g o (https:// youtu.be/6m-k_bm2mDc), we discovered Demera Ethiopian Restaurant, located at 4801 N. Broadway in the Uptown Neighborhood of Chicago, so we decided to give Demera a visit and sample what they have to offer. Owner, Tigist Reda, and her staff have created a very inviting and authentic Ethiopian dining experience. The first thing to note about Ethiopian dining is that eating is hands-on…literally. No forks, spoons or knives are required, just your God-given eating utensils. This “hands-on”style of dining is part and parcel to the fun and uniqueness of eating Ethiopian food. We started our dining journey with the Appetizer Messob, which consists of five sambussas, served alongside skillet-baked Ambasha bread. A sambussa is very similar to Indian samosas. They are fried dumplings with savory fillings. Demera offers chicken, beef, cheese, spinach or lentils as fillings, and they are served with a spicy honey awaze sauce. The dough of the sambussas was flaky and soft (like a filo dough), each filling complementing this flaky goodness to perfection, the chicken and lentils being the standouts. The shredded chicken was very well seasoned with a hint of heat, and the lentils exploded with flavor and just melted in our mouths. The spicy awaze dipping sauce rendered a sweet heat that propelled the sambussas to a whole ‘nother level of flavor. Awaze is a traditional Ethiopian condiment made with berbere, oil, and honey. Ambasha bread is a traditional Ethiopian bread popular in northern Ethiopia but eaten nationwide. The Ambasha bread is dense with a slight fruity flavor and came with a farmer’s cheese spread that had collard greens, butter and cardamom infused throughout. OMG, the flavors in this cheese spread really popped. It was fresh; the collards adding its herbaceous distinctiveness, while the cardamom added an earthy, warm note. Just slather this cheese spread on the Ambasha bread and have at it. To THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Demera Messob say this cheese spread is delicious is an understatement. For our entrée, we ordered the Demera Messob, for two. This consisted of three proteins and three vegetables, all beautifully served atop injera bread. Injera is another Ethiopian staple, best described as a crepe-like, spongy, sourdough flatbread made from teff flour. We ordered chicken, lamb and beef and our veggies were red lentils, yellow split peas
and collard greens, showcasing an array of culinary colors. Tear off a piece of injera, grab some food – with your fingers, of course – and explore the world of Ethiopian cuisine. (Make sure you watch our video link to Demera). The sponginess of the injera soaks up all the juices from the foods and makes for a delightfully delectable bite. All three proteins were well executed, but the lamb really stood out to us. Chunks of tender lamb in a rich and savory gravy, sopped www.chicagodefender.com
up with the injera bread, had us saying, “mmm, mmm good!” The collard greens are made with garlic and ginger and were super tasty. The yellow split peas were silky and on point. The red lentils, however, are in a category of flavor that makes you want to shout. These tasty legumes are stewed in a ten-spice blend, layered with palate-pleasing flavors. With Ethiopia being the origin of the coffee plant and producing
some of the world’s finest beans, we capped off our meal with one of the best cups of coffee we have had in a while. The cuisine at Demera is great for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing with top-notch service. Though parking may be a bit cumbersome, do yourself a favor and step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Demera is like a wonderful new friend waiting to be met. We rank restaurants based on number of kisses (one thru five, with five being the best.) Demera Ethiopian Restaurant receives 4 kisses. Five From CHA Honored for Work With Community Two Chicago Housing Authority employees and three affiliated with CHA were recently honored at the McCormick Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King Business Dinner. Andy Teitelman (Director of Senior Services and Health Initiatives), Cass Miller (Director of the Charles Hayes Center), Francine Washington (CHA Commissioner), and resident service coordinators Pamela Wright and Carmen Rivera-Vargas were presented with an award for their outstanding performance and commitment to furthering the community’s mission. “The purpose of the event is to show all the work that they’ve done,” said Christine Bowden, Executive Director of the McCormick Chamber of Commerce. “Andy has just done outstanding work. Cass has turned the Charles Hayes Center into something we can be proud of. Francine, I met 40 years ago and she has always been an outstanding person, committed to the community. And Pam and Carmen, anytime they can assist, they will.” The awards were determined
by a selection committee of representatives from the President’s and Chamber’s committee offices, Neighborhood Coalition offices, Business Associations, diverse non-profit community organizations and past award winners. Teitelman said he was pleasantly surprised by the award. He has worked at CHA since October 2003, and retired on March 1, after a 40-plus year career in social services and more than 14 years at CHA. “I think it’s an honor to be recognized for the things we do every day, that help residents of the community,” he said. Wright, who grew up in Harold Ickes Homes, has been volunteering for most of her life. She said helping people is her calling. Her job as a resident services coordinator at UCAN on behalf of CHA is an extension of that. “The first thing I thought when I got the call was, ‘Do I deserve this? Because you don’t have to give it to me,” she said. “I suppose I’m just getting my reward.” Rivera-Vargas grew up in Cabri-

She used to recruit kids to volunteer for various community efforts. Now she performs similar duties for Employment and Employer Services on behalf of the CHA. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be chosen for this award,” she said. “I was surprised, because this is something we do on a nor-
mal basis. It comes natural to me. I do what needs to be done.” Miller, who has been at CHA for 13 years and worked his way up to Director at the Charles Hayes Center, also said he was honored. “I’m humbled that people thought enough of me to give me an award for what I normally do,” he said.
And Washington, who is also the CAC President and has served on the CHA Board of Commissioners since 2014, said this award means that someone has seen her and recognized what she does every day. “I’m just doing what I’ve always done,” she said. “People make me tick. I love helping people.

Vivica A. Fox is Hotter Than Ever, and Disarmingly Real By Allison Kugel Defender Guest Writer Kind, conscientious, courageous and refreshingly candid, Ms. Vivica A. Fox has proven that as Hollywood careers go, second acts are often the sweetest. The multi-hyphenate actress-directorbeauty entrepreneur-author is embracing life and not looking back, except to pull from her well of wisdom for her new memoir, Every Day I’m Hustling. And if you know Vivica like I got to know her during our conversation, you’d think the book’s title quite fitting. She enjoys hard work and has no plans to slow down. Born Vivica Anjanetta Fox on the outskirts of Indianapolis, she went by Angie Fox, one of four siblings being raised by a divorced mother who worked overtime to provide for her children. Her childhood home was hectic but loving and provided fertile ground for Vivica to aspire for things grander than her midwestern upbringing. After high school, she made her way to Southern California to attend college, all the while seeking out opportunities in Los Angeles to model and act wherever she could. It was in LA that Angie became Vivica A. Fox. She worked her way through the ranks on sitcoms and daytime soaps, and in 1996 got her breakthrough role opposite Will Smith in the classic blockbuster, Independence Day. Next came a string of fan favorites including Set It Off, Soul Food, Two Can Play That Game, Kill Bill Volume I and II, and a string of subsequent roles in film and television, including Larry David’s sharp-witted houseguest, Loretta Black, on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Skye in the campy Sharknado franchise. Her eclectic career has kept her on the move for nearly three decades. In 2016, Vivica joined the cast of the smash hit television series, “Empire”, playing conservative suburbanite Candace, Cookie Lyon’s (Taraji P. Henson) older sister and character foil. During our interview we covered everything from movie stardom and maternal instincts to social media drama, setting boundaries and finding love. Allison Kugel: When are you Angie and when are you Vivica? When do you take off the Vivica and become Angie from Indianapolis? Vivica A. Fox: Well first off, that’s Angie Fox from 38th and Emerson in Indianapolis (laughs)! I’m Vivica Fox when I hit that red carpet and I’m ready to slay the game. That’s what I do. But I love that I have in my life, and in my journey, learned when to be Ang14 April 4 - 10, 2018
Photo by Blake Little ie Fox. And that’s mainly when I’m with my family, time off, hanging out with my godchildren, having my Me Time and learning to take Me Time. That’s when I’m no makeup, baseball cap, chilling and blending in. Allison Kugel: Do you prefer yourself that way? Vivica A. Fox: Oh my gosh! To be honest with you, the older I’ve gotten, the more I prefer it. I work so much; I’ve been so blessed and so busy lately that I enjoy when I can have that Me Time. In fact, today I don’t have to be on. That’s what I really love about being with my godchildren. When they see me, I’m just G.G. or G-ma. G.G. stands for Gorgeous Godmother. G-ma, I don’t know where they got that one from, but I have five godchildren. Two of them call me G-ma and the other ones call me G.G. They like hanging with me. Not the drama or the glamour, they just want me. Allison Kugel: I love the part
in your book where your godson, Christian, sees you all done up as Vivica A. Fox, and he gives you that side eye like he doesn’t recognize you, and you say, “It’s okay, I’m just wearing my Vivica costume.” Then he asks, “You’re still my G.G., right?” And you reassure him that it’s still you. Vivica A. Fox: It’s funny because he was just a baby the first time he saw me like that, and he was like, “Who are you!?” He was so used to seeing me in my tracksuit and baseball cap. But now at seven, he kind of likes it when he sees the reaction I get from people. He’s done a couple of red carpet events with me and he knows the difference between the two. Allison Kugel: Coming from the Midwest, your father was a school administrator, your mother worked for a pharmaceutical company, so you really had no ties to entertainment, or Los Angeles for that matter. www.chicagodefender.com
What gave you that spark of courage, that spark that made you believe that you could become a successful actress? Vivica A. Fox: I was introduced to the world of fashion and modeling by Madame King, my late auntie. She had her own beauty salon back in the day. She was the first one to cut my hair and put me on a runway. I was kind of bitten by the bug at thirteen. From that point forward, I just fell in love with magazines and fashion. Then I went to go see Michael Jackson in concert, and Diana Ross in concert. I had never seen African Americans being so fabulous, and I was like, “Where do they live? That’s where I’m going! That’s what I want to do.” I decided that during my senior year in high school. But I had to trick my mama (laughs) and tell her I was going to college in California, and I did go to college. But I would be sneaking up to Hollywood and going to modeling agencies. I had a girlfriend who was an actress, and I used to read lines with her. She
would say, “You’re pretty good at this, you should try it.” Allison Kugel: Your book is part memoir and part motivational guidebook for success. Tell me about your mentor, or mentors… Vivica A. Fox: My mentor would have to be a good friend of mine, and my first acting coach, Sheila Wills. I’m her two daughters’ godmother. Sheila, I met when I was doing [the daytime soap opera] “Generations”. She took me under her wing, and she would work with me with auditions. I would go into those auditions and just nail them. I attribute my success to her. She would say, “Vivica, you’ve got to stay ready. You got to be ready. You’ve got to take care of yourself.” And people who inspired me to be who I am would be Diana Ross and Pam Grier. Allison Kugel: Do you know that you’re incredibly sexy? Is that something you’re aware of? Vivica A. Fox: Well, okay now! Allison Kugel: I’m not pulling your leg. You really do ooze sensuality. Do you know that? Vivica A. Fox: Thank you! I appreciate that. Got to keep it tight and right, girl (laughs)! Allison Kugel: More so now, than twenty years ago, in my opinion… Vivica A. Fox: Maybe because… No, not maybe! Because I am comfortable in my own skin. I’m very comfortable with me. I have embraced my womanhood through my pluses and my minuses. I’m good with me right now, so that’s what you’re seeing. My spirit is happy, more than anything else. It’s taken awhile, and that’s something I want to share with people. My book is a motivational memoir. I, too, have fallen down and had to figure out how to get back up and create new chapters for myself. I want to encourage, enlighten and inspire other people. Allison Kugel: Why did you choose to share your journey with menopause in the book? Vivica A. Fox: It’s part of life. It’s going to happen. And it’s like you just asked, “Do you know that you’re sexy right now?” But do people also know that for the last few years, that’s what’s been going on in my life? I embraced it and I got in front of it. I didn’t let it define me or make me want to whittle away. I don’t know why with women, we can’t talk about our bodies and what we go through, share it with others, and not feel like we have to hide that from people. I’m sharing it, and I got in front of it and took care of myself. I really feel like it made me take good care of myself. continued on page 16

Allison Kugel: And being that your image is sexy, you weren’t afraid of putting that out there… Vivica A. Fox: No, not at all. You’re going to have naysayers and people that are going to try to come and say something, and they can. But I’m still me. It doesn’t change who I am. I’m still all woman. Allison Kugel: When it comes to social media feuds and this clap back culture we’re living in, when do you take the high road and not respond, and when do you feel the need to clap back? Vivica A. Fox: I will clap back occasionally, but to be very honest with you, if it’s not necessary, I don’t like that. I’m not one of those people who became famous by being a controversial celebrity. Normally, I’ll click on who that person is and see if they’re even worth it. If it’s somebody that you can tell is wanting to make TheShadeRoom or seeking attention, I just block them. They’re not worth it. When I clap back, it’s when somebody comes at me or I have to set the record straight. Allison Kugel: Technology has made it very easy for people to say something mean spirited or join in the angry mob. For me, I try my best to practice the art of what I call Non-Reaction, where I feel like every time I don’t react I’m passing that next spiritual test. But occasionally, something will get me and I’ll react. And then I’ll wonder, was that a failure on my part, or was it warranted in that situation? Do you share that same internal struggle? Vivica A. Fox: It’s an internal struggle with me too. Some days I’m like, “Why did I give that person my energy?” There are some people, they just come on your page to be mean, and you kind of want to go, “You looked me up, and took the time to write a response to be mean to me. Hmm, what does that say about your character?” There’s an old saying your mama told you. “If you ain’t got nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing at all.” I try to live by that old school motto. I don’t try to pass on bad energy to others, I don’t. If I don’t have anything nice to say I just keep my opinion right on over here. But you know, this generation with the social media, a lot of people like that negative feedback. They feed off it. I don’t. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about motherhood. I know you have all these nieces and nephews, and godchildren. I feel like motherhood, meaning the energy of motherhood, is something that is innate in all women. We have a need to nurture. How does that energy express itself through you? Vivica A. Fox: I’m Mama Bear all the time! I have a nurturing in16 April 4 - 10, 2018
Photo by D’Andre Michael stinct and I think I get that from my mother. My mother always loved to take care of others. Still to this day, she doesn’t take as good care of herself, because she is always looking out for others. I got that quality from her. When I’m on the set, I’m always looking out for others. When I walk on a set, I’m always making sure that I speak to everyone, that I try to make people as comfortable as possible. In that way, I am very motherly. It’s just something in me, I like to look out for others. But the older I’ve gotten, I’ve learned to look out more for myself, as well. And I’ve learned a very important word: No. Because people will take, take, take from you child, till you drop! Then they’re satisfied, and you’re left over there feeling completely empty. Allison Kugel: At what age did you learn how to say No? Vivica A. Fox: It was in my late forties, or maybe just when I got to be about fifty, that I started really looking at my relationships and asking myself if they are all reciprocal relationships. I had that tendency to give, give, give, and I finally took off my Captain Save-AHo cape. Allison Kugel: (Laughs). Vivica A. Fox: I mean that. Sometimes you’ll talk to friends on the phone, and we all vent, it’s human. But if you talk to somebody that is constantly draining and negative, at some point… I’ve cut ties with a couple of friends and not felt bad about it. I call it the season of shedding, where not everyone’s going to the next chapter or the next level with you. And it’s okay. You don’t have to hate them, but there’s nothing wrong with making good choices for yourself. Allison Kugel: How do you define glamour and beauty? Vivica A. Fox: Someone who is a goddess, who just radiates confidence; someone who owns her moment, who seizes her moment. The older I’ve gotten, I believe that beauty radiates from the inside. Especially nowadays with
these build-a-bodies, and everything is just makeup and fakeness in my opinion right now. It’s when you meet a person and they are a beautiful person, they radiate confidence and kindness. I find beauty in a woman that has no makeup on, but she’s confident in her own skin and radiates kindness and does for others, to me that’s beautiful. Allison Kugel: In your book you give advice on achieving different areas of success in one’s life. I personally think that so many people have a misconception about success. People want that insta-recognition, that insta-success. I said to someone the other day that for all the people who think they would love to trade places with Mark Zuckerberg or Oprah, for example, most of those people wouldn’t make it through the first week if they saw the tremendous amount of work, pressure and sacrifice that it takes to be in that type of position. Vivica A. Fox: To piggyback on that point, for myself, people don’t realize that for the last two to three years I slept on planes. I was always traveling, always busy, taking meetings, not sleeping, going here, going there, and going through changes of life and never letting it slow me down. There’s a lot of work required. All those seeds that I’ve planted, I’m now seeing them all blossom. But I had to do the work. That’s what I tell people. In my book, in the chapter about Being the Head Chick in Charge, I say, “Don’t let anyone outwork you.” Allison Kugel: What do you think is the biggest misconception about success? Vivica A. Fox: That it’s easy. When you’re successful, usually it’s taken a long time to build a career. It isn’t something that happens overnight. It takes time to build a career, and a career means being able to go through different stages and chapters of a career, not just being the hot chick of the moment. ing the hot ingenue chick, to now building my brand and producing and directing. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about Empire. I started watching it last week, all four seasons in a row! Vivica A. Fox: Oh, you bingewatched… Allison Kugel: Yes, I bingewatched! I’m talking carrying the iPad with me all over the house; the show is that addictive and entertaining. Entertainment value, on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s a 12 plus. The one thing I had mixed feelings about is the way African Americans are depicted in the show. On one hand I’m loving it, on the other hand I’m thinking, “Does this play on negative stereotypes, the way this family is being portrayed?” Vivica A. Fox: Well, I think that’s why Empire has been so successful. It’s raw and right there in your face. It makes you uncomfortable. What I commend Lee Daniels and the cast of Empire for is they are like, “It may make you uncomfortable, but we are who we are. We’re not going to sugar coat this. We’re going to give it to you straight, no chaser.” That’s what made it a phenom. Some people felt like they couldn’t handle the gay [subject], or they feel it’s a little bit too raw, but that’s Empire. They have stayed true to what the show is about, and I have to commend them for that. That take courage, not to bow down to social or peer pressure. Allison Kugel: Did Lee Daniels ever share with you the moral of the story of Empire, or his vision for the show? Vivica A. Fox: Not really. The thing I love about Lee is that he is who he is. It’s taken awhile for him to become comfortable in his own skin, and that he’s a gay man and that he has talent, and he doesn’t have to hide who he really is anymore. We’ve all been in this business for twenty years, and I’m going to tell you that it’s been a long journey for him to put out a show like this. Some of the storylines in the show, absolutely, with the mother saying to her kids, “You’re this, you’re that (referring to the character, Cookie, having a penchant for hurling insults).” The father throwing the kid in the dumpster, it tugs at the heartstrings. It makes you uncomfortable, but it happens. I feel that with knowledge there’s power. Allison Kugel: What will Candace be up to in the new season? Vivica A. Fox: I can’t give away a whole bunch, but I will tell you that Candace is back and that you will get the chance to finally meet our mother, Renee, played by the very beautiful and talented Alfre Woodard. Allison Kugel: Do you judge your character, Candace, the
same way that Cookie judges her? Vivica A. Fox: No. I believe we all have those relationships in our families where we’re all different, but we’re still family. In my career right now, I’ve embraced my womanhood and people are like, “Ooh, Vivica, you’re going to become today’s Diahann Carroll.” And I’m like, “Wow! Thank you for that.” But firstly, Vivica is a little bit more like Cookie. I like to have my rock star moments, and I love wearing the crazy clothes and all that stuff. But Candace is who I’m evolving into. Allison Kugel: In your book you provide some back story about your mom and dad’s relationship, and how it’s affected your own love life. What I got from what you wrote is that in watching your mom nurse a broken heart over the divorce from your father, you saw her as a victim, and that framed your own love life. Vivica A. Fox: Absolutely. Allison Kugel: Do you still see her as a victim, or do you see things in a different light now? And what would it take for you to let your guard down in love? Vivica A. Fox: I see my mother now as a survivor. My mother grew up in a time where you stuck by your guy. He was her one true love, and I definitely have those qualities. What I learned from her, in wanting her to live and to love and to laugh more, I wouldn’t take those same steps that she did. I can open my heart again. For my part, I’m making sure that I’m not lustful anymore. I don’t look at somebody and right away say, “Oh yes, he’s the one!” I make sure that I take the time to get to know someone. That’s something I pass along in my book, as well. Don’t jump into the shallow end of the pool head first. You’ve got to take the time to get to know people. So yes, I am open to love. I want to love again and have someone that’s really special. But he has to prove himself, and I would have to prove myself to him, that I’m worthy to be his mate. Sometimes women are so afraid to be alone that they just take that first thing coming, and they get the short end of the stick. They keep dating the same guy over and over again. That’s why, in the book, I say to make your chart out. Do you keep dating the same guy over and over again? Because you’re going to get the same result. Vivica’s memoir, “Every Day I’m Hustling,” is available everywhere books are sold beginning April 3. Black Folks Need to Mature
Carl D. West By Carl D. West 12 Voices As I listen and observe the reaction and behavior of certain Black folks, I’m stunned at what I’m witnessing and hearing. Therefore, I’ll be writing a series of articles on why Black folks need to mature, on all levels—including in business, politics, community organizing, and education. I remember the last mayoral election when the astute Dr. Willie Wilson announced he was running for Mayor of Chicago against the incumbent. Some of the background noise against Wilson was sickening. And as he just announced his candidacy for the 2019 Mayoral election, again, what I’m hearing from some Black folks gives me a reason to scream, GROW UP! People are not really discussing whether he’s qualified because
he’s an extremely successful businessman and community leader. This dude has built a business from scratch after leaving poverty behind in the South and moving to Chicago to provide a better life for himself and his family. He has given of his riches to disadvantaged families and organizations. But Black folks are disrespectfully stating that he’s not qualified because he’s too dark of a Black man and his voice has too much of a Southern slang. Again, GROW UP! This man has done more than most Black folks can even imagine. His southern slang didn’t stop him from building a multimillion-dollar enterprise. How many of you correct English, educated Negroes have done that? Very few! Actually, 99 percent of you can’t even speak your native tongue. But because most of you are too busy being modern day slaves to corporations and following what they say as significant and valid for Negroes, you fail to even know who you are! Come to think of it, most Black folks are descendants of southern states, as our parents and/or grandparents escaped the Deep South to find a better and safer life in the northern parts of America. So when you (adolescents) diss Wilson, you disrespect your freakin’ heritage that was entrenched in the South where Negroes were pitch Black, in some regions, with heavy slang dialect. Heck, my granddaddy was super Black and a mumbling preacher who served and loved, collectively, and was a partner in a construction company while raising 20 kids
Dr. Willie Wilson with his wife, my grandmother. I want to point out several damn smart and respectable dark Black men who came from the Deep South and amassed real power in Chicago. We have Emil Jones, Jr., who went on to become President of the Illinois Senate, and then we had the late great John Stroger, Jr., who was the Cook County Board
President. Both men were dark Black and had southern accents identical to Dr. Wilson. And may I express that they held elected positions representing all people, not just Black folks. Black people, stop showing your ignorance and GROW UP. To judge a man and his qualifications because of his tone of voice is
extremely immature and childish. Black folks, get WOKE! Carl D. West is the CEO/Publisher of TBTNews and founder of the TRUTH 4 Literacy Foundation, Leadership Luncheon, Legend and Pioneer Awards, all powered by Midwest Gap Enterprise.
‘Anoyd’ - As inspired by ‘Just a Fan’ x Anoyd that doesn’t recommend this new plan. Cause I’ve been growing annoyed with the trend that I could spend a lifetime in the moment, you know just stunt and pretend, but in the end, I’d be another guy that left my little men fighting for their own ends when we’re clearly so much better than that. prison trap. Rap, Hip Hop, is one of the most beautiful art forms of all time. The stories told in those rhymes are real life lines that save lives by inspiring minds. For as long as I can remember, it’s sparked mine, because if you look behind the craziness, crime, and obsession with women you’ll only see one time, there lies lessons on how young black men turn aggression into shine while simply tryin to make it past 29. But lately real rhymes have been
hard to find, cause a lot of guys glorify pills, bills and lost minds and that might seem fine for a lot of us that’s struggling, really wondering how to get by, but you got to ask yourself how you want the world to be in your granddaughter’s lifetime and decide whether she’ll be able to thrive or simply survive, because whether we use it wrong or right, Hip Hop is going to continue to grow and help mold the future of mankind. It’s Way Too Early To Hit The Panic Button By Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS The Cubs have set a National League record with 58 K’s (strikeouts) through the first 5 games of the season. A clear sign that right now, the offense stinks! Splitting a series 2-2 with the extremely huff Florida Marlins, then being 2 hit and shutout by a winless Cincinnati Reds squad is not the way Joe Maddon and his guys wanted to start the season. But take a second to exhale, it’s still too early to start nitpicking and worrying. Let’s take a look at some of the most notable developments of this early season. What’s the “Happ’s” on a leadoff man? Ian Happ hit a HR in his first at-bat of the year. He’s 1-15 with 10 strikeouts since. Fans want to know why Maddon doesn’t believe in Albert Almora Jr. as the everyday center fielder, but the bottom line is Joe has options and depth is the Cubs biggest strength. At this point, the way Joe fills out his lineup card is never surprising. How long of a leash does Jason Heyward get? Not much has changed for Heyward when it comes to his production at the plate so far, but one thing you can’t take away from him is his glove. Don’t be surprised if you see him in center field as Mad-
don digs through the lineup looking for a spark. Here’s Looking at “Yu” kid… *Yu Darvish was touched up a bit in his first action in Cubbie blue. He gave up 5 runs in 4.1 innings but escaped with a no decision in a 10-6 win over Miami. Extras *Tyler Chatwood was erratic at times (6 walks) in his Cubs debut but managed to give up the only run in a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati. *Javier Baez, Wilson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo & Ian Happ are hitting under .200. Saying they need to step it up would be an understatement. *The bullpen has been the best part of the Cubs slow start. They’ve thrown 26 innings while giving up 16 hits & 1 run while striking out 23. Eddie Butler had a great outing in the Cubs 17 inning 2-1 loss in Miami. He went 7 innings giving up 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 5. The Cubs make their 2018 home debut Monday April 9 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 9-game homestand also features the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves before leaving to play the Colorado Rockies. If they head to Colorado with a losing record... then the frustration will be warranted. For now....its too early to hit the panic button!

It’s Time To Pay Attention…South Side On The Rise By Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS That sound you hear? That’s just White Sox fans trying to hide their excitement for this fun start to the season the White Sox have had. It’s all about patience in this marathon of a season, but you’d be fronting if some of the early production from key players doesn’t have you thinking that this rebuild just might work. Quite frankly, it’s time to pay attention to the “Good Guys” on the South Side. Let’s take a look at some of the most promising developments from the first week of the season. Power outage? Not on the South Side As local outlet’s in Chicago turned a blind eye to baseball on the South Side leading up to Opening Day, the “Good Guys” surely caught their attention with 24 April 4 - 10, 2018
a downright nasty show of power in a 14-7 win in Game 1 of 162 in Kansas City versus the Royals. Three homeruns for Matt Davidson, two from Tim Anderson and a solo shot from Jose Abreu tied an MLB record for most homeruns on Opening Day. In Game 2, an eighth inning three-run rally pushed them to their 2ndW (4-3 over Royals) of their year behind a Yoan Moncada bomb and some clutch hitting from newly acquired veteran catcher Wellington Castillo, who added a pair of dingers himself in Monday’s 4-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Welcome to the South Side Wellington Say it’s early all you want but the addition of veteran catcher Wellington Castillo is already a pleasant surprise. “Overall, Wely is MVP,” said Lucas Giolito, who started Saturday’s game versus the Royals. “He helped me get
through six innings. I was in line for the loss and it wasn’t looking too good, but he got it done at the plate. Just a fantastic job by him.” Castillo’s experience will be an asset to the young arms in the rotation as well as the lineup, which has been thirsty for a catcher with the offensive prowess he brings to the table. Extras Matt Davidson’s three homeruns so far this season is enough to put him at the top of the American League and his six runs batted in are the most through three games for a White Sox player since the Carlos Quentin days. Not bad for a guy who has All-Star potential written all over him this year. Rain Delayed April baseball is for getting a feel for the season, building the team chemistry as much as possible and…rain delays. Sunday’s finawww.chicagodefender.com
