CITY NEWS Third Death Connected to Synthetic Cannabinoids The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is reporting the death of a third individual who experienced severe bleeding after using synthetic cannabinoids, often called Spice, K2, or fake weed. To date, 107 people in central Illinois and the Chicago area have experienced severe bleeding after using synthetic cannabinoids, including the three deaths. Two of the deaths occurred in men who were in their 20s; the third was a man in his 40s. Individuals who have been sickened by the synthetic cannabinoids have reported coughing up blood, blood in the urine, severe bloody nose, bleeding gums, and/or
internal bleeding. Numerous have tested positive for brodifacoum, a lethal anticoagulant often used in rat poison. “Each day we’ve seen the number of cases rise,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Synthetic cannabinoids are unsafe. They are not regulated and people don’t know what chemicals may be in them, like rat poison. While efforts are underway to get the contaminated drugs out of circulation, it’s possible they could re-emerge. We urge people not to use synthetic cannabinoids now or ever.” Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are sprayed on to dried plant material. They can be smoked or sold as liquids
to be vaporized in e-cigarettes and other devices. These chemicals are called cannabinoids because they are similar to chemicals found in the marijuana plant. The health effects from using synthetic cannabinoids can be unpredictable, harmful, and deadly. Synthetic cannabinoids are found across Illinois and the U.S. in places like convenience stores, gas stations, drug paraphernalia shops, novelty stores, and online. Anyone who has a reaction to synthetic cannabinoids, such as severe bleeding, should call 911 or have someone take them to the emergency department immediately.

Ernest Everett Just The University of Chicago will name a room after scientist Ernest Everett Just, a pioneer in biological science who was known as the Black Apollo of Science. Just was one of the first African Americans to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Born in 1883, he was head of Physiology at Howard University Medical School, was the first winner of the NAACP’s highest honor, and received the Spingarn Medal in 1915. He published his most important work, “The Biology of the Cell Surface” in 1939. Kenneth Manning, Ph.D. will speak at

the service honoring Just. Manning is the Thomas Meloy Professor of Rhetoric and the History of Writing at MIT and the author of “Black Apollo of Science: The Life of Ernest Everett Just.” He is currently studying the role of Blacks in American medicine. The service honoring Just will be on Wednesday, April 18, at 4 p.m. in the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery auditorium, at 900 E. 57th St. The reception will follow at the Smart Museum, 5550 S. In Chicago, we use a lot of different terms like ‘beloved.’ Cats in LA and New York start to use our lingo. “Good Brother” is a term of endearment and also vouching for a person’s character.” The Good Brothers is a behind-the-scenes organization that prides itself on doing community service work. Last November, The Good Brothers used the ZackTV1 platform to broker a peace treaty between two gangs in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood, the AMG (Achieving My Goals) and the BarNone’s. The organization has mentored youth, facilitated workshops on how youth can monetize their social media accounts, and also partnered with Lilydale Baptist Church for a gun buyback event. “We’re trying to make peace profitable. People make a lot of money off of violence,” declares Woods. “The legal system. Social service organizations. Non-Profits. ZackTV1 serves as the Bat Signal and The Good Brothers are Batman coming to Gotham’s rescue. Stoner challenges traditional forms of journalism by not abstaining from attempting to address the very issues that he covers. In fewer words, this is accountability and probably a model worth emulating given the relationship with Black communities and exploitative media. “If you study ZackTV’s interviews, you’ll notice that at the end of them, I often ask ‘What can we do to resolve the violence in Chicago?’ But a lot of young men feel that their hood will look down on
them if they wanted to fix the problem. A lot of people may look at these individuals like they’re thugs, ghetto hoodlums, or nobodies. But to me, I look at each artist as a human being that is stuck in this box that they are trying to get out. When you’re in the hood–ghetto, urban communities, whatever you want to call them–it’s a way of life but also survival tactics. Never judge a book by its cover. Never look down on the next man.” Zach Stoner clearly wants to help Chicago. In his own words, he wishes to “change Chiraq into Chicago” and now over 150,000 people are watching. ZackTv1 can be a call to action for Chicagoans to engage our darkest places and seek the remedies necessary to improve current conditions, or we can just view more reality television. Record Number Attend Black Women’s Expo

With record numbers, the crowd filled the expo space and created long lines. Creative and beautiful booths filled the hall showcasing artwork, information on healthy eating and living, books, small businesses… and so much more. Toyota, the title sponsor of the event, provided free massages, a DJ, photo booth, and plenty of giveaways. Not to mention, singer Johnny Gill made women swoon and rapper Remy Ma showed Chicago some serious love. It was a day party in McCormick Place. Panels. More Celebrities. learning how to navigate through life despite fears and anxieties. Keynote speakers included: critically acclaimed actress Kimberly Elise and Basketball Wives reality star Tami Roman. DaJonese Turner William, a Be-
havioral Therapist, is the founder of Me in the Making, an organization that provides guidance to female teens, young adults and millennials throughout their transition to adulthood. Turner, who partnered with Breaking The Silence Mental Health, provided free services to participants. “It was a great experience. The amount of people who were open about getting mental health services [when] mental health is not typically openly discussed in the Black community was awesome,“ said Turner. Gina Evans, MPH Public Health, worked with the Illinois Department of Health during the Expo throughout the weekend, providing free HIV tests to individuals seeking to refresh their knowledge on their status. “It was important to provide free healthcare services to people at the Black Women’s Expo because people typically come to go shopping, not get tested,” Evans offered. “So it opened up a new array of the population, who would not have been tested for Hepatitis C or HIV otherwise.” continued on page 5

Furthermore, Evans explained that providing free health services to people at the Expo helped to bridge the gap of needed healthcare for the underserved African American community who lack health insurance. Besides providing a variety of healthcare services to Expo attendees, many small businesses and Black entrepreneurs were able to promote their products to a large audience. Some vendors for the event included Hello Tee (which provided unique and trendy apparel that had a particular appeal for anyone with an affinity for 90s-era pop culture), Purescents Essentials Soy Candles (which offered uniquely scented and fragrant candles), And Still I Rise (a book series and compilation of women stories), Sesi ( a magazine devoted to covering the stories that appeal to Black girls), Respected Roots ( a skincare line dedicated to catering to men), Soft Shadows by Shika (a makeup artist who provides her artistry for graduations and oth- Mike’s Seasonings representatives displaying their delicious seasonings and sauces. er special events), Aunt Jackie ( a hair care line with recipes rooted in coconut and flaxseed products that are designed to define the curl pattern for natural hair) and Dave’s Coffee Cake ( offers a wide variety of large gourmet coffee cakes). Cathy Dale, a Black entrepreneur in the Bronzeville community who has attended almost all of the Black Women Expos over the last 24 years, expressed delight in the fact that the attendance for the event seemed bolstered this year. “It’s pleasant to see a number of men who attended with their girlfriends, wives and kids this year,” Dale said. Dale was right about the bolstered attendance. Merry Green, creator and executive producer of the Expo, told the Defender, “We had record crowds every day. Even security had to come see what was happening (with the lines).” Green says the energy was amazing and sponsors, as well as attendees, were very pleased with the event. Some vendors actually sold out of the product they bought, which is good news for small businesses sharing goods and services with customers. Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended on Sunday and announced new initiatives for small businesses. Gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker and running mate Julianna Stratton spoke to the crowd on Saturday. Some vendors, like Luster products, had trouble shutting down at 6 p.m. on Sunday because the demand was so high. Chicago Rapper Vic Mensa Teams Up with AT&T for the Chicago Community By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer A long line of people braved the cold outside of an AT&T store in downtown Chicago last Friday night. Not for a new phone release or service, but to see hip-hop artist and activist Vic Mensa. Mensa performed live at the AT&T Flagship store on Michigan Ave. to bring more awareness and support for his new Save Money Save Life Foundation. Fans and AT&T customers were treated to a “meet and greet” with the celebrity Chicago native. Vic Mensa has partnered with AT&T to empower Chicago communities through his Save Money Save Life Foundation and share the offer that AT&T is offering Free Home Internet for Life to Chicago AT&T subscribers. “When I announced that I was launching Save Money Save Life in Chicago, AT&T jumped on board immediately to help us amplify our message and platform with everything that I’m doing. He has found power in using his voice to inspire, motivate and empower people of all ages to identify their rage and take action. “I believe that statistically the more Black students you have in your school, the least amount of dollars you get per student and it’s just a f*****-up vicious cycle that always leaves us with the short end of the stick. We’ll get the newest teachers in lower-income communities. And as those teachers gain more seniority and rank, so does their salary. Then they’re moved out to schools with less Black students and more white students. LP: How did you derive the concept of Plantation!? Tamberla: The concept of the sisters in the play came about because of my relationship with my sisters, my sorority sisters, and my friends. For several years Kevin had been talking about doing this type of play where he could discuss his passion for the subject matter of race relations. He started a concept play that involved the characters that I, his wife, had with her sisters and friends, and he intermingled that with other relationships to where he was able to explore a variety of issues he could tackle with these two diverse groups of people.

LP: Tell us what the audience should expect when coming to see ‘Plantation!’ Kevin: It’s a fast, funny, female-driven comedy about family, race, legacy, and change. What we have seen so far is that when people are leaving the play and having conversations with other people that they are examining themselves and their feelings with and asking what they can doabout racism and asking what can I do to make things better. Many believe that if you are talking about slavery and reparations, it should be a serious subject. But ‘Plantation!’ is a humorous play where the information is disseminated in a very palatable way; that helps open up the line of communication of the issue and makes the topic easier to discuss. We had Jessie Jackson lead a panel discussion where people from different ethnic groups were able to come together and feel comfortable talking and discussing issues that if placed in many other settings they would not feel very comfortable discussing. We ask, when coming to see ‘Plantation!’ that you come with a mind of curiosity and not judgment. “Plantation” is at Lookingglass Theatre until April 22.

Let’s Play spoke with the dynamic duo playwright Kevin Douglas and his wife, actress Tamberla Perry. “Plantation” is Douglas’ second world premiere at Lookingglass Theatre. Perry has starred in “Black Diamond,” “Fedra: Queen of Haiti,” and “Icarus” at The Lookingglass Brenda and Rick Theatre. (You can read McCain our review of the play in the March 14 Defender or visit chicagodefender.com.) Let’s Play: What inspired you to write this dynamic play called ‘Plantation!’? Kevin: As a young child, I often thought about race and racism and how we can fix or get rid of it. How do we eradicate racism, which led me to ponder about reparations and how reparations would work. So then the question came to me that if you knew as a White person that your family had a legacy of slavery and enslaving others and you could do something and wanted to do something morally about it, what would that look like... and that’s how Plantation was born. LP: What kind of feedback are you getting from the name ‘Plantation!’? Tamberla: When we first started marketing the play on social media platforms, the title alone was getting all type of trolls (negative replies) where people were saying, ‘nothing is amusing about slavery or reparations.’ We hadn’t started rehearsals, and no one had even seen the play, but we were getting a lot of negative feedback just on the name. There was so much judgment and preconceptions over the name and people were like, ‘What are you bringing me to see?’ But when they see the play, they genuinely enjoy themselves. LP: You mentioned that you often think about racism; how do you feel this play deals with racism? Kevin: It shows a Black and White family coming together and how within our race (Blacks with Blacks and Whites and Whites) we are fine together; however, it’s somewhat different and unbalanced when we are with other ethnic groups. Hopefully, ‘Plantation!’ will teach people to recognize their faults and understand what they are saying and the things they are doing that negatively affect the progress of race relations. I hope that people will leave this play and figure out what they can do in their life to change racism. An example that I utilize is if you’re hanging out with family and they are saying something negative about another race, you should probably call them out (admonish them) about it. If you recognize that they are talking about some harmful and hurtful things, we hope that this play will help you let them know how wrong (racist) they are for saying and using inappropriate words to describe someone.
LP: So why are you talking about racism? Kevin: I have a 19-month-old and I’m bringing this subject matter up so that hopefully there will be some positive actions behind it. I’m hoping that when my 19-month-old is 20, 15 or even 10 years old, she is able to say to me, “Daddy, people didn’t use to like each other because of the color of their skin? That’s crazy!” So I want it (racism) to be gone! If we can’t be uncomfortable for 90 minutes on a subject as compelling as this, then we need to examine why. LP: How did your upbringing in life affect you writing this play? Kevin: I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas -- actually in North Richland Hills, Texas. There are a lot of good people in Texas and I still have good friends there today. But I did have some experiences as a child that other people would not find appropriate. For instance, my high school flag was the Confederate flag and when I graduated that Confederate flag was on my diploma. It was experiences like that that made me think, what am I going to do with these opposing and confrontational experiences? I could get angry, or I could be smart about my decisions and figure out how to use the information I learned about growing up as a child in a more constructive way. So I decided to put it into my writing. LP: Tamberla, we are also fortunate to have you here with us. Can you tell us how your acting career started? Tamberla: I went to school in New York at the University of Rochester and majored in Health and Society. I was seeking to become a doctor in physical therapy. After I graduated, I had a corporate job and worked as a physical therapist at night. In college, I was an athletic trainer for athletes playing football, baseball, and other sports. However, one day at my corporate job, I had a 22-year-old, adolescent mini panic attack, thinking about what was I going to do with the rest of my life. While I recovered from my panic attack and started thinking about what else I could be good at, I went to a pageant and thought, maybe I can be an actor. I decided to do a Tina Turner impersonation. After I enjoyed doing my impersonation, I decided to do a Yahoo search for acting jobs in Chicago. The search brought me to Columbia College Student Films and I saw this magazine called ‘Perform Ink’ that provided me with information for various places to audition. I just started emailing all of the people I could find, telling them I was interested in auditioning. I was so naive then; I only had a Polaroid picture, a resume and a cover letter that said, ‘To Whom It May Concern.’ I was in the corporate world for so long, I didn’t know anything about how to write up an acting resume. Fast forward, I became an Illinois Lottery Host on WGN for seven years. Then, I was at Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Lookingglass -- things turned out good.

Racism From the Eyes of a Child: An Interview with Mathew Knowles By Dino Dean Defender Contributing Writer Dr. Mathew Knowles is a college professor, businessman, author, and the father of the fabulous Beyoncè and her empowering younger sister, Solange. But, more than anything, he is a survivor. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs and educators, perhaps it was destiny (pun intended) for him to live the life he has lived. We recently caught up with Dr. Knowles about his life’s journey and memoir, “Racism From the Eyes of a Child.” It gives a glimpse into what makes the Knowles family who they are today by examining their family’s history. Knowles is a very interesting and complex man who has overcome numerous obstacles in his life. He skillfully takes us on a journey from the not-so-distant past of overt racism and injustice to where we are today in America. This memoir showcases the many dimensions that have made Knowles a well-rounded individual with much to offer the world. What inspired you to write your memoir? I wanted to trace my family roots in an effort to further acquaint my family with the Knowles side of their heritage. I’m hoping to stimulate social courage and spark dialogue about racism, colorism, sexism, xenophobia and homophobia. Social courage is something these young kids in Florida are doing. When we hear racism and see racism or colorism, it is important that we speak up and say something. You grew up in Gadsden, Ala. What was it like growing up in the segregated South? It was hell! That’s one word for it. I was born in 1952. I went to a Catholic elementary school. How my parents were able to afford that is amazing because they weren’t Catholic and had to pay an even higher tuition for me. I was one of six Black students who integrated Litchfield Junior High. There were 600 White kids and 6 Black kids. Brown vs. Board of Education and many other new laws ushered in the era of freedom of choice, allowing parents to decide where their kids would go to school. In reality, though, the unspoken truth was you were on your own — it being made 16 April 11 - 17, 2018
Mathew Knowles clear, ‘We’ll be damned if we’re going to protect you.’ Yes, we were on our own for doing that. Who did you look up to growing up? Did you have any role models? My grandfather was my hero. He was the first Black man I heard White men address as “Mister.” My grandfather owned 300 acres of land. I, for the life of me, cannot understand how he got those 300 acres. He would take a parcel of the land and lease it to the local paper mill. They would then pay him to cut down the trees, and he would go behind them and farm the land. What a genius idea to have them pay him to clear his land so he could farm.” Then he laughed and said, “As the young people say today, that’s a ‘G’ move.” What kind of impact has racism had on your life? It shaped me deeply in both positive and destructive ways. My mother, Helen, had me on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement at age eleven. I developed into a veteran protester during my early teens. I saw elderly Black men protesting barefoot in 100-degree weather, women being
beaten, and people, including myself, at the wrong end of electric cattle prods. Racism gave me courage and taught me the importance of preparation, which I believe is why I’m successful. But during my mid-life years — while working in corporate America — I began to suffer from anxiety attacks. Going through years of therapy, I learned that the root cause of the attacks was a result of years internalizing the racism I endured in the segregated South. Has your family always been so socially conscious? For generations, my side of our family has been socially conscious. My mother was socially conscious. I talk about that in the book. My mother grew up in Marion, Ala., a small town of 800 Black people, and look who else came from there – T.D. Jakes, Coretta Scott King, Jean Young (Andrew Young’s wife) and Oscar Underwood. These highly successful people came from this little, small town. The answer to your question is, yes — but not just because of me. My former wife is also very socially conscious. Both Beyoncè and Solange, on their last albums, were extremely socially conscious. Following Beyoncé On the Vegan Tip By Elle Smith Defender Contributing Writer Now, we have seen the various memes talking about Beyoncé “with her hand out around tax time” (in reference to getting you all to pay astronomical amounts of guap for tour tickets), or the posts regarding how fake mad folks get when she releases a new project and “didn’t give y’all a heads up” (LOL). However, there is no denying the fact that the woman has a massive following--whether you belong to the “BeyHive” or not. I am personally not a member of the Hive, but I Beyoncé was intrigued when I read an article headline indicating that Beyoncé followers to go vegan with her. I like the lady, just not THAT much to make a huge lifestyle switch, but I was certainly intrigued by her choice to take on this challenge while preparing for the infamous “Coachella,” (which begins Friday, April 13, and ends Sunday, April 22). Beyoncé made the announcement to go vegan back on March 2, which marked 44 days until the celebration, and my thoughts instantly centered around one question: Just HOW MANY PEOPLE will follow the vegan lifestyle for a total of 44 days? Or, will this be a total lifestyle switch for some? I wanted to test my theory so I asked a random woman outside of Starbucks one morning how she felt about Beyonce’s request of her fans. Random lady says, “I’m not doing it; I like her but I’m not training for Coachella; she is.” I chuckled and kept moving, until I decided that I wanted to ask a man his thoughts. Random guy responded: “I’m all in, but I was already vegan. For me it’s a lifestyle, not a trend.” I still didn’t think I had enough information, so I asked a total of eight more people. Five of them were totally against it. Three of them said that they basically live their lives by what the BeyHive is doing, so they were all in, but would go back to their regularly scheduled program after the show was over. The three people who were going to make the switch were also going to the concert when it hits Chicago in August, and another was going to see the show in another city...so I knew what I was dealing with--DIE HARD FANS. In all seriousness, it’s cool when someone you admire takes a stance on healthy living, and they ask you to join in. With so many artists/actors/actresses in our world, those who are living life to impact positively are a breath of fresh air. Beyonce is using her influence for good, and that sits well with not only the masses, but with me. Sure, you have hecklers who think that people are sincerely brainwashed by this legendary lady, but even in having hecklers she is doing something right. If everybody likes you? You’re doing something wrong. Listen, if there is anything that propels you forward in living a healthier life, I say go for it! I do, however, believe that you should consult with your physician and plan accordingly prior to making a total lifestyle switch. Make sure that you are going about this change in the right way and in the way that best fits your body and digestive system. We definitely rock with Bey; we also rock with what works for self. STEM is the New Vocational Ed
Karin Norington-Reaves By Karin Norington-Reaves 12 Voices Recently, families of 8th grade students throughout Chicago received notification of their child’s acceptance to the City’s public high schools. Let’s ignore for a moment the debate about selective enrollment and the number of available seats versus the demand for them. There are literally tens of thousands of applications for a
few hundred spots in the incoming class at prestigious college preparatory schools because we accept as fact that getting into the right high school prepares you for the right college and presumably the right career. Education is the path out of poverty—our ancestors taught us. Education is supposed to be the great equalizer, the one thing no one can take from you. Job knowledge then should be no different. Whether broad or specific, it has value—money, status, security. As a society we have snubbed our noses at vocational high schools. Indeed there are only a few remaining in the city, ironically (or perhaps not) they are peppered throughout the South and West sides in predominantly Black and Brown communities. Vocational education in the U.S. has its roots in the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 (known as the National Vocational Education Act). Originally created as a way to ensure the existence of a skilled la-
bor force prepared to meet rising industrial and agricultural needs, the Act was vigorously debated at the time: colleges were for the elites, but should industry be dictating educational training? Over the years concerns grew about both gender and racial inequities that would arise from the emphasis on vocation over traditional college preparatory education. Women were steered to home economics, while immigrants and African-Americans were similarly dissuaded from college and higher education. Interestingly, the debate then, as now, was about access to options and preparation for the changing economy. John Dewey, famed education and thought leader (founder of the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools)—was concerned about forcing class distinctions into the education system. By steering low income students from working class families into a specific career track, society was limiting their potential, he asserted.
He certainly had a valid point. One drawback to the Act, or its implementation perhaps, was in part the lack of focus on career advancement or the acquisition of multiple skill sets across occupations. The vocational education of old pertained to the development of one set of skills for one occupation . . . for one’s life. Today, the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) trend is all the rage. In fact, over the past month I have counted no less than five announcements of local STEM-based training programs for youth and adults alike. This area of study teaches numerous skills that are useful in multiple sectors. My organization, The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, was asked by Mayor Emanuel to create one such program—Chicago Codes, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation. Launching this year, Chicago Codes will provide participants free training, internships and ultimately connections to permanent employment in Chicago’s
growing technology industry. Our target—the untapped tech talent in Black and Brown communities. I don’t see STEM as a new frontier necessarily. In many ways it is every bit the vocational education of old but dressed as something more than the blue collar vs. white collar distinctions of the past. Technology bridges those silos. To discount occupational preparation ignores very real opportunities for economic stability in the face of evolving national and global industries. The game-changer for many in underserved communities, no matter the race, is investment in job training and connection to employers. Recognizing that there is no perfect route to the right career, shouldn’t we strive to create as many paths forward as possible? in the shadow of Sacré Coeur with a clean glass of Beaujolais and a dirty new lover. What we feel in Chicago is much less romantic, closer to say, a WWE grudge match, where we face off with Mother Nature, not dressed in spandex, but in sixteen layers of wool topped with an old Bulls sweatshirt and a Canada Goose coat*. Yes, I used to live in Miami, a city that is warm and sunny year-round, where parrots fly and cocaine** is plentiful, but I moved back to Chicago because it is the GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD, (despite what the Schuyler Sisters think), and no matter how bitter cold it gets, no matter how wind-burned my face gets, no matter how many times I almost lose my pinky toe to frostbite because my sock got wet when my shoe got pulled off when I stepped in a snowbank up to my hip, I will NEVER leave Chicago, so DO YOUR WORST, MOTHER NATURE! And then I jump in the ring and slam Mother Nature across the back with a metal folding chair. So, in the spirit of the season, I have written a poem heralding the Chicago Spring. I call it: *clears throat* “La Mort de L’espoir”

Crime+Punishment Documentary Shows Racial Discrimination Inside the NYPD By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Filmmaker Steven Maing captures a group of minority New York police officers as they come together to fight and expose racially discriminatory policing practices in a documentary, “Crime + Punishment”. This film was documented for years with the cops, who were labeled as the “NYPD 12,” employing secret undercover recordings and intense interviews to detail a widespread web of injustice, which continues to have disastrous consequences for communities of color. The film was shown at the Doc10 film festival in Chicago this past weekend, followed by a provocative question and answer session. As the officers go public, the tension escalates. And the sympathetic police officers, such as Sergeant Edwin Raymond, an eloquent spokesperson and rising top cop, face pressure and retaliation from the powers-that-be. Sergeant Raymond, an African American male, attended the film festival this Friday, April 6, to premiere the film and answer questions from the audience. He and 11 other officers (NYPD 12) filed a lawsuit against the New York Police Department for violating multiple laws and statutes, including a 2010 state ban against quotas, and the 14th Amendment, which outlaw’s racial discrimination. They ask for damages and an injunction against the practice. Plaintiffs have provided courts with evidence suggesting the department uses quotas, however, this is the first time the department has been sued for violating the 2010 state ban against the practice. The lawsuit claims that commanders now use slang terms to sidestep the quota ban, pressuring officers to ‘‘be more proactive’’ or to ‘‘get more activity’’ instead of blatantly ordering them to bring in two arrests and nine tickets by month’s end. ‘‘It’s as if the ban doesn’t exist,’’ Raymond said. The lawsuit was effective and could work to change the influence of officers from quantity to quality, but according to Raymond and others, the pressure to arrest people for minor offenses has not ended at all. Raymond was given the excuse that he was a young black male with dreads, very smart but very loud with his words. He was given low evaluation scores and even slandered by a newspaper publication for letting a Black kid “slide” from an offense. Raymond also stated in the film, “To be asked to participate in something that disenfranchises Black people even more, it’s horrible.” At the festival, this must-see documentary’s examples of discriminatory practices made the audience gasp in disbelief. The audience (the majority non-minority) could not imagine that these actions exist. Even though people see it on TV, it is reality for many Black and Latinos. The viewers of this documentary got to see it through the lenses of the filmmaker and voices of the officers. Many of the scenes were part of three different circumstances that tied into one. It goes from the 12 cops having private meetings to get ready for the lawsuit, individual testimonies of mistreatment, and a worried Latino mother who fights for her 16-year-old son to be prov-

Ex-NYPD/Private Investigator Manuel “Manny” Gomez, who works on cases to help innocent people in prison and on the streets, reports that he was forced off his job in 2011 because he wouldn’t comply with their indecent orders. “When I was a police officer, I saw a lot. But the police department wants you to be the kind of cop that keeps his mouth shut and doesn’t say anything, so I refused to do that.” Jessica Perez, mother of 16-year-old Pedro Hernandez, hired Manny to prove her son’s innocense. Perez stated that her son, who was locked up, couldn’t graduate from high school because of this ordeal. Hernandez was arrested in July 2016 and charged with firing a gun into a crowd. He refused to plead guilty for a crime he did not commit. “I can tell there’s multiple kids with the same problem as this, they get arrested, they go and there’s not a shred of evidence and then what the court does is dismiss the case. I wish one of those chiefs from the headquarters could watch me on patrol. Out of the eight hours I’m on patrol, I have at least 30 people in the community come up to me and shake my hand.” Law enforcement all around the world has historically struggled with race and gender discrimination. The fourteenth amendment of the constitution protects citizens from state actions that “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” Although there has been allegations of police targeting people of color to reduce crime rates, there is a big issue with police singling out activity or action only to make their numbers. These quotas generate money for the city, but it’s at the expense of innocent people being locked up with no evidence held against them. NYPD Officer Kareem Abdulla
stated, “I don’t know what’s going to happen because it is a big thing. It’s not just the 12 of us that have been harassed, it’s much more. They don’t want everybody to come forward, so they have to do some type of retaliation to put fear in others and discourage them (other police officers) from coming forward.” At the festival, Sgt. Raymond encouraged the community to help spread the information about “Crime+Punishment”. “I hope that this film influences people. There are good officers out here. Let elected officials know what’s on your mind; let them know you saw this film and what we can do (police officers and community) about this matter. Not only is racial discrimination happening in New York, California and other prominent cities, it’s also happening here in Chicago right now.” The documentary is another powerful example of how art can serve as an agent for change. “Crime+Punishment” is only being previewed at film festivals for now. Dannie Smith is The Bigs 2018 Hooper of the Year By Eugene McIntosh & Terrence Tomlin Sports by #TheBIGS It was the type of high school season where at one point in the year each of our finalists deserved the award. However, there can only be one! The Bigs 2018 Hooper of The Year is Dannie Smith of the Orr Spartans. “Danno Buckets” was the best player on an Orr team that finished the season 30-4. Dannie was instrumental to the Spartans’ success as they racked up hardware this year, winning their 1st Proviso West Holiday Tournament Championship and finishing the season bringing home the 2nd of back-to-back IHSA Class 2A state titles. ed tough Chicago Public League Tournament, which is nothing to look down upon, and they put two L’s on the Whitney Young Dolphins who advanced to the championship game in the ISHA Class 4A state tournament. Hard to imagine all that happening without Danno. His tough play inside out was huge for head coach Lou Adams, who knew he could count on Dannie to make the best decision down the stretch for his team to seal the deal in close ball games. He was there all year for the Spartans who were as talented as any of the teams we saw this season. Smith makes quality decisions, can step out and shoot it, can get down and dirty on the block and sees the floor well. Most importantly, he ended his high school career as a winner. We give a huge salute to Orr’s Dannie Smith as well as all of our finalists for The Bigs 2018 Hooper of the Year. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
