Chicago Police Officers Volunteer With Youth on Earth Day On Earth Day, April 22, 2018, officers from the Chicago Police Department and Cook County volunteered with youth from My Block My Hood My City at the Heartland Alliance Urban Garden in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. All of the food produced from the garden goes to benefit local food pantries. The event was designed to continue to bridge the gap between officers and the community and to promote understanding.

Fenger Alumni Help Students Raise Money for Adventure Trip Alumni of Fenger High School recently donated money to Black Role Models (BAM), a counseling and mentoring program. The money will be used to help young males from BAM attend an adventure tour in Colorado. During the tour, which will give students the opportunity to experience nature outside of an urban environment, they will also visit colleges and meet other male role models of color.

It’s Not Acting Out, It’s Autism A mother and son’s journey and why it matters to the Black community

“Why can’t your son talk?”

“He’ll go off on you in a second.”

“Is he retarded?”

“In my medical opinion, your baby is normal,” “Dude got mental issues.”

“He’s special alright – Special Ed!” “It’ll cost $50,000 for intervention.”

“A good butt whooping will stop those tantrums.”

“You’re a bad parent.”

Sylvia Carter Smith has heard it all. As a parent of Wilton Smith, an energetic autistic teen who enjoys listening to music and navigating Google maps, it has been a long, difficult road. The mother of three boys ages 39, 33 and 14, Sylvia never thought autism would enter her life. She was 44 years old when she and her now late husband welcomed their “bonus” baby into their lives. Everything seemed normal.

“As an infant, there wasn’t anything unusual about Wilton,” says Smith. “He hit all his milestones, crawling and walking at the right times. But at 15 months, he wouldn’t look up at my eyes, and he wasn’t babbling like babies do. I thought he was just slow and lazy.

I figured girls develop faster than boys.”

Physician Bias When Smith took Wilton in for his regular medical check-ups, she casually mentioned Wilton’s slowness to his doctor.

“Even my doctor brushed it off.

I thought, maybe I’m just trippin’.

You know, young doctor versus old mama.”

But Wilton’s unusual behavior persisted, “By 18 months, a light went off in my head. Wilton wasn’t pointing, saying mommy or daddy.

He would line up his toys – Lego blocks, tracks, cars in a certain order, and they had to stay that way or he would have a meltdown.”

At nearly 2 years old, Wilton still wasn’t saying anything. Smith became worried and confronted Wilton’s physician. Again, he saw nothing out of the ordinary. This time mom put her foot down. “It was only when I got angry that he [the doctor] finally decided to run THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Smith found out that when it comes to Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD], many health care professionals don’t pay as close attention to African-American children as they do White children. In studies conducted by the CDC, Black children are least likely to receive an ASD diagnosis as compared to their White counterparts.

“I believe doctors don’t listen to us,” says Smith. Studies indicate she may be right. Compared to White children, CDC research suggests doctors often misdiagnose Black children as having other conditions such as ADHD or conduct disorder based on antisocial behavior. Therefore the prescribed treatment is ineffective.

Is the Black Community Ignorant or in Denial?

Over the years, Smith has found that many people in the Black community don’t understand the

stigma, heartbreak and misunderstanding parents go through raising a child with autism. It extends to family members as well. There is profound denial that autism is a developmental disorder that needs early diagnosis and immediate intervention so children can grow up happier and live more productive lives. Smith also found that too many Black parents, especially young ones, don’t want to seek help for their struggling children.

“These kids go undiagnosed,” Smith says. “Their parents don’t want to deal with the reality of it all.”

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the higher functioning Asperger’s Syndrome is a serious chronic developmental disorder that impairs a person’s ability to interact and communicate with other people. According to Autism Speaks, an advocacy group www.chicagodefender.com

dedicated to promoting solutions and increasing understanding and support for people with ASD, autism is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences…

The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths possessed by each person with autism. The autism range is so vast; no two autistic children are alike. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that one out of 68 (approximately 1.2 million) people under 21 years of age in the U.S. is diagnosed with ASD. Just imagine how many people are not diagnosed.

What Autism Isn’t Autism Spectrum Disorder isn’t mental illness like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Having autism isn’t being intellectually challenged or the politi-

cally incorrect term -- mentally retarded. In fact a child with autism can possess average to genius intelligence. The characters Dr. Sean Murphy of the TV series “The Good Doctor” and Desna’s brother in the series “Claws” are examples of autistic savants. Autism is not Down’s Syndrome, which is a chromosomal disorder with physical and intellectual impairments.

And autism is not being bad, or acting out willfully, though negative treatment from others can cause further withdrawal, isolation, and uncontrolled anger. Learning social and communication skills as early as possible is the key.

The fact is autism is on the rise in every community, Black, White, Hispanic, rich, poor and middle class. There are theories as to why, from vaccinations to electronic screens. Diet and environment have also been discussed as con continued on page 4

The Answer Inc: Offering Support Having a child with Autism or any Disorder is a challenge especially in underserved communities.

Today, according the Center for Disease Control 1 in 68 individuals is diagnosed with Autism, making it more common than Pediatric Cancer, Diabetes, and Aids combined. It occurs in in all racial, ethnic and social groups and is four times more likely to strike in boys than girls.

Debra Vines, Founder and Executive Director of The Answer Inc., and her husband, James Harlan, have a son Jason, who is now 30 years old and was diagnosed with Autism when he was 18 months; in response to their own challenges and desire to help others, they started The Answer Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organiza-

tion in 2007.

The Answer Inc. is dedicated to providing support, resources, education, recreation, and advocacy for families in the greater Chicago area who are challenged with supporting family members with Autism & Developmental Differences.

In addition to providing essential resources and services for parents and caregivers, the agency strives to help contribute to the continued growth, educational and recreational inclusion for the children and relatives specifically impacted by disabilities.

beled special needs as he may be.

I think that when you’re not in full acceptance, you may feel that way especially if you’re ashamed or embarrassed of your loved one’s diagnosis. Those without awareness, education or compassion may find it easy to label. Each person with autism is unique. They all are definitely more than a label.”

Smith has navigated through the stigma and criticism, but she’s keenly aware of Wilton’s ongoing struggle and knows he’s trying.

“Wilton is not social. Growing up, he didn’t like being in crowds like during Christmas celebrations with family. The noise would make him have a meltdown. A lot of it was caused by sensory issues such as bright lights; the scent of certain air fresheners; the ‘ding’ on Family Feud or Judge Mathis’ theme song.” Wilton didn’t know how to express his discomfort in words, much like a baby crying because it doesn’t have the words to express those needs. Some family members were tolerant, but not all of them understood his disorder. Being judged is hard. But Smith knows where to place her faith. She relies on prayer and her church to give her peace. “It’s in God’s hands. Special angels protect my son.”

Early Intervention Smith was proactive. Early intervention helped Wilton find his voice. Because of early diagnosis, Smith was able to plan out Wilton’s path. He was given an IEP (Individualized Education Program), a document developed for any child in the public school system in need of special education. He attended preschool and

by Stefan Hansen of Aarhus University in Denmark suggests that since Autism became a spectrum of disorders, it broadened the criteria for diagnosis. According to the 2015 Time magazine article, “This May Explain the Rise in Autism Diagnosis,” researchers determined that “60 percent of the increase could be attributed to these changes.”

Challenges Autistic Black Children and Parents Face It’s already a struggle being autistic, but being autistic and Black has its unique challenges. Double that if the child is undiagnosed.

Unfortunately many parents, especially in Black communities, are baffled as to why their children won’t talk, socialize, or behave. Yet they refuse to entertain the possibility that something is medically wrong. Their children become antisocial and unproductive in school, and they are labeled stupid and as having behavior problems. Oftentimes they flunk out and drop out of school. It’s a problem a thousand butt whoopings won’t beat away and heads in the sand won’t wish away. Fear prevents parents from finding out what’s really wrong – or finding out too late; many fear blame, embarrassment, and labeling.

The fear of labeling was never a concern for Smith. It never stopped her from getting the help Wilton needed.

“Wilton is a loving kid who’s unique in his own way,” she says.

two-hour support meetings at a local Community Center in the Proviso Township for family members, supporters and educators who are interested in learning more about ASD, including those with a range of developmental differences.

It also hosts Just for Men, a monthly support group that caters to the needs of men dealing with individuals impacted by ASD/Developmental Differences. This group is facilitated by men and is an important component of The Answer Inc. A principle objective of The Answer Inc. is to encourage parents and caregivers of people with ASD not to feel stigmatized within the community.

“Wilton was fortunate to have the same teacher from first to eighth grades so he was able to be under the care of someone who loved him. Teachers are important for the success of the student. It takes patience and care.”

Spectrum University, a weekly educational program that meets in 10-week sessions on a year-round basis. This program provides reading, writing and math instruction to adults with ASD/Developmental Differences. Participants are between 18-40 years old and enter the program functioning at or above the 3rd grade level.

The Answer Inc. also has a Health & Wellness component, “Music N Me Exercise & Dance Program.” The program focuses on exercise, healthy eating, cooking and dance through instruction.

RECREATION Each year, The Answer Inc. is proud to sponsor children with Autism, Intellectual or Developmental Abilities to participate in a weeklong special needs horse-

back riding camp partnering with Special Camps for Special Citizens in Winfield, Ill. The Annual Autism/ Special Needs Walkathon helps the organization to fundraise for sponsorships. In order to broaden exposure, inclusion and social interaction for individuals impacted

by Autism/Developmental Differences, The Answer Inc. sponsors several family outings.

ADVOCACY FOR INCLUSION With the cooperation of local law enforcement officials, the organization held 1st Responders Trainings for police officers, fire departments and the local department stores.

Wilton’s transition to high school much smoother. His new male teacher is slowly mainstreaming Wilton into regular classes. His goal: to improve his “people skills” so that he can mainstream completely.

Encounters with Law Enforcement Another obstacle autistic people – especially teen boys – face is encounters with police. According to Autism Unites advocacy group, those with ASD are seven times more likely to have run-ins with law enforcement over the course of their lives, compared with people without a cognitive disorder.

While there are no solid stats of how many autistic people are in prison, the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics 2015 report found that 2 in 10 prisoners and 3 in 10 jail inmates were listed as having a cognitive disability. It’s a fair assumption that with more than 2.3 million people incarcerated in the U.S., that thousands of autistic people, diagnosed and not, are “members” of the penal system. Not to mention, those unfortunate to have been shot (or killed) by police during a crisis.

Smith plans to have “The Talk” with Wilton about police enforcement. “I definitely plan on implementing some ideas, such as wearing an autism ID wrist band, and displaying autism awareness magnets on my vehicle. I feel that autism awareness and education should be mandatory for ALL Chicago Police Department [personnel].”

Lack of Resources in the Black Community Special programs and support

services for families of autistic and other special needs children are lacking in Black communities.

Smith connected with two support groups, A Place for Me and Chicago Autism Connection, comprised of parents and professionals who offer encouragement and advice to each other. They plan fun family activities and host empowering seminars on topics to help keep families informed. Smith travels from her South Side home to the near West Side to attend meetings. She hopes that one day research will discover what causes autism and how to cure it. But in the mean time, she hopes her message encourages people in the community to understand autism.

“I don’t talk about autism for sympathy or pity. I talk about it because I want as many doors as possible to be open for my son. I want his life to be enhanced. I want him to know that he belongs and his being here is not in vain. I truly want others to understand and accept children and adults living with autism. Awareness! Awareness!

Dorothy Brown Announces Run for Mayor of Chicago Hundreds of supporters brandishing signs that said “Elect Dorothy Brown Mayor” crowded into the Chicago Hilton and Towers on Sunday, April 22, to hear the newly minted mayoral candidate announce her intention to be the first African American woman to lead the city of Chicago. The crowd at times burst into spontaneous chants of “Dorothy Brown for Mayor,” as the current Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County pledged to create a world-class city for all Chicagoans.

Before addressing the crowd, a number of supporters spoke on her behalf, representing the mosaic that is the Brown coalition—a young millennial single mom; an entrepreneur, members of the Hispanic, East Indian and LGBT community.

“The city of Chicago spans over 228 square miles, with over 200 neighborhoods, and 77 communities, and it is often said that Chicago is a world class city,” said Brown. “Well I say, in order for Chicago to truly be a world class city, we must have world class blocks, world class neighborhoods, and world class communities; then and only then will Chicago be a world class city for all Chicagoans.”

Brown talked extensively about her leadership abilities, honed during five terms as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County. In response to a question about her

According to Brown, Sunday’s announcement marks the beginning of her campaign, and her outreach to all Chicagoans to share with them her goals for a Chicago that works for all citizens. “At the core of all this is my deeply held commitment to bring respect – pride – change and hope for all Chicago,” she said. “My goal is to engage the many stakeholders that value our city and desire to

work collaboratively in achieving change for all people.”

Brown first became Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 2000, and has been elected five times, most recently in 2016.

She has brought changes to the operations of the office through her focus on technology and providing effective and efficient customer focused services. She has implemented a host of innovative programs, which have streamlined processes, saving millions of dollars for taxpayers. Through her leadership, more than 220 million

court documents are now accessible on line by judges sitting on the bench.

within our communities. Telligen is a healthcare company that works in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to bring diabetes education to those most in need.

Once the ball got rolling at Good Shepherd Tower, it was hard to slow it down. Ms. Yarbrough asked Dr. Townsend to speak at a tenant meeting; at which point the tenants voted to bring DSME classes to the building. Ms. Yarbrough then began posting flyers on doors and included information in the building newsletter. By the time Merle Shapera, Telligen’s DSME class instructor, showed up to teach the first class on February 21 there were 8 people registered.

African American, all were over 65 years of age and all either had diabetes or pre-diabetes. The participants ranged from a man who didn’t know anything about diabetes to a woman who was a former registered nurse. No matter the level of knowledge, all felt the classes were informative. “The classes were more in-depth than what the doctors do. We were free to ask questions and have them ready for the next week’s class,” said Florine Brown, the retired nurse.

Alice Thompson had previously taken diabetes education classes, but wisely said, “You can never know too much. It was very different than what they taught then.”

During the course of the classes,

Ms. Thompson was taken off oxygen and now manages her diabetes without medication.

Ms. Shapera was amazed at the goals set by the classmates. A reverend at a local church plans to apply diet and stress management to help lower his sugars, while another participant plans to increase his walking as soon as the weather gets warmer. Many students also mentioned they would attend the classes again if Ms. Shapera were to come back. And wouldn’t you know it? Ms. Yarbrough is already posting new flyers for the next set of classes.

That’s the option the Jenkins couple chose.

to someone else that it matched, and we would cross swap on down the line. Actually, when my husband got his transplant so did several other people,” Loretta Jenkins, 47, explained.

Jenkins’ husband suffered from undiagnosed high blood pressure.

He appeared young and healthy.

But in the spring of 2011, he got really sick and couldn’t hold anything in his stomach -- they thought he had the flu. When he kept getting weaker and weaker, it was time to head to the hospital. That’s when they found out about his condition and learned that his heart and kidneys were declining. For the most part, he turned things around over the course of five years by eating better, exercising and taking medication. But his kidneys never did improve, and they knew it was time to look at other options or

face dialysis, which Lee strongly opposed.

“I heard a lot of bad stories about it. My wife’s grandmother and her uncle were on it and it was painful and it drains you and you don’t have the quality of life.

It takes a lot of your time. It takes away a lot of the quality of your life,” said Lee, who got on the list for the kidney swap in February of 2017 and by June of the same year, he had a donor and the surgery. “Everyone I know in the Black community knows someone who needs a kidney or they’re on dialysis. I love the fact that the donor [in the swap] is saving two people as opposed to just the person who they’re bringing to the table. They are saving someone else also. Alece McFadden was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 11. She knew that living a healthy lifestyle would keep her from having to undergo an amputation, need an organ donation or go on dialysis in the future. But she was young, and it was challenging to do so. Alece’s blood sugar would spike, and she’d head to the hospital, but she didn’t take warnings from the doctors seriously. When she got older and finally did start to take care of herself, it was too late. By age 26, her health was deteriorating rapidly.

Afraid of dialysis after seeing her grandfather endure it, she started learning as much as she could about her options, attending an event at the University of Chicago that gave her insight on what she’d need to do to get on the list for organ donation.

“My thing was, I did not want to go into dialysis unless my name was on the list. So, I had a great nephrologist who said it was just kind of up to [me], how I felt. I had no energy, and I was laying down all day, I couldn’t get up. You can feel your body just dying. That’s the way it feels. After a few months of dialysis, her name started to move up on the list. But knowing that it could take around three years for someone like her to get an organ donation, she decided that it wouldn’t hold her back.

“I’m like, ‘Okay, well do you know what? I’m going to go to school, get my degree. I mean, I’ve got three days a week for four hours, I can study,” said McFadden about her time in dialysis.

She only had to wait around a year instead of the three she anticipated because she was a good candidate for a transplant -- young, healthy aside from the kidney disease, and a good weight. She got

the call, it was a good match and she had the procedure, receiving a kidney and a pancreas from the same deceased donor.

Life after Surgery For Loretta and Lee, the surgery was life-changing. Lee says he’s doing well, is happy, and back to his old self again.

“I see my husband every day, his skin color has changed. There’s just so many changes from that kidney. The guy I gave my kidney to, he keeps in touch with me and he sent me a text saying he’s traveling. He has amazing stories. He was his parent’s only child and his mom died the day after Christmas, but she got to see her son get a kidney and he’s been living life,” said Jenkins.

McFadden, now 32, has had more challenges. At first, things were great. She was traveling to Europe and Jamaica. Got in a great relationship. Earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Northeastern University. But then a medication change had an adverse effect on her kidney and it started to fail. She has chronic kidney disease all over again. But she’s anything but bitter.

“Now I’m getting my masters from Loyola. I graduate May 9th in mental health in social work. I want to do therapy with those who are on dialysis and help them make sure that they get everything that they need,” said McFadden. “It’s like giving back to pay it forward.” www.chicagodefender.com

So often, we humans take this wonderful instrument for granted and run it till it just won’t go anymore. That is why balance is important and beneficial for its optimum performance.

Although every person is created and shaped differently, this balance, if practiced, can be a great benefit to the health and well-being of everyone. So here are five tips to help create a balanced, functioning body.

Get plenty of rest: Studies have shown that 7-8 hours of sleep a night helps the body to rejuvenate, lowers blood pressure, improves lifestyle and reduces a cranky mood. It also aids in reducing fatigue throughout the day and helps boost energy. Taking time to get enough rest aids in reducing the body’s risk of diseases and helps improve the immune system.

So, if you have been lacking sleep, then it is time to turn down and give your body the rest it deserves.

Listen to your body: your body speaks to you through your aches and pains or any discomfort. That THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

is its way of informing you there is something that needs to be addressed. When you take the time to tune in to your body’s signals, you aid in the healing process. It is not meant to be ignored, but heard. So the next time you get a hint from your body, take the clue and see how you can help to solve the problem.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: The body is made up of 70 percent water and it is needed. Water helps the body to move fluids to lubricate your joints, help with digestion and improve your skin.

When we let the well run dry, it creates challenges for the body to function properly. Give it the fluids needed, and if needed, spruce it up with some lemon, cucumber or fruit so you don’t get so focused on the bland taste. Your body will thank you for it.

Exercise: Just as much as the body needs rest, it needs to move.

The body was meant to move and movement helps to keep the muscles and bones limber. Muscles and bones work together to keep you doing all the things you do.

When moved, the joints and muscles warm which aid the ease of movement. When you don’t move frequently, joints get stiff and other issues can arise. So move your body! 10-15 minutes of movement

Nutrition: Your body needs the proper nutrition to help maintain your strong muscles and bones. Processed foods, too many sweets, too many chips with all the salt and a sedentary lifestyle can be a very bad combination. Find a nutritional balance that works for you, but more fruits and vegetables are best. Fruits and vegetables are fueled with many of the nutrients and vitamins the body needs. So, instead of loading your plate with sweets and chips, load up on fruits and vegetables—3-4 servings of veggies and 2-3 servings a fruit a day will keep the body happy.

These are some helpful suggestions to take into consideration when reviewing how balanced your body is. Take time to review your unique design and consult with your physician or nutritionist to find what works best for you.

It has been reported that the average Black man has a life expectancy that is less than the average White man. This life expectancy difference can be as much as five years. Becoming an active participant in your healthcare could lead to better health outcomes, decrease your risks for some illnesses, and even decrease your risk for an early death. There are several health numbers you need to know, and knowing your numbers is a good start in monitoring your health.

Do you know your body weight? It is surprising how many people do not own a scale, or monitor their weight even periodically. Body weight is a good primary indicator of your health. If you are overweight, there is more stress placed on your joints and your heart. You are more at risk for Diabetes Mellitus, Glucose Intolerance, Heart Disease, Arthritis, and a host of other illnesses. Maintaining a healthy weight is critical to good health.

Body mass index or BMI is used to screen for overweight and obesity. BMI is a calculation based on your weight and your height, and estimates the percent of body fat you have on your body.

Your healthcare provider has the formula to calculate your BMI. Ideally, it should not be above 25.

Any result above 25 puts you in the “Overweight” category; 30 to 39 is “Obese”; and a BMI of 40 and above is “Extremely Obese.”

Proper diet and exercise can help reduce the amount of fat in your body and reduce the risk of health problems.

Hemoglobin A1C – Hemoglobin is a molecule in our blood that carries oxygen to our organs. Hemoglobin A1C measures a type of hemoglobin that has bound itself to glucose (sugar) in a person’s blood.

By measuring this glucose-bound hemoglobin, a doctor can get a sense of your blood glucose levels over a period of weeks or months. The normal range is 4 - 5.9 percent. Above 6 percent could indicate diabetes and may require further testing. Diabetes is a serious concern for the African American community, and is the third leading cause of death for African Americans. A healthy diet,

exercise, and weight control can help reduce the risk of diabetes.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, as it is commonly called, is a leading cause of stroke, and is defined by the systolic pressure (top number) 140 mmHg or greater, and/or the diastolic (bottom number) 90 mmHg or greater.

Having an awareness of your blood pressure can help reduce the risk of illnesses caused by this common condition. High blood pressure can be treated with medications. However, stress reduction, a healthy diet, a healthy weight, and exercise are also recommended and very effective in controlling high blood pressure.

Your prostate gland is a small gland that is part of the reproductive system, and can grow larger with age. Prostate cancer is 74 percent higher in Black men than in non-Hispanic White men. Because African American men are at greater risk, an annual check should be performed. There are two ways to check the prostate gland. One method is a digital rectal exam. This exam is done when the healthcare provider feels the prostate through the rectum. The test is done with a gloved hand and lubricated finger. The test may be briefly uncomfortable, but it can be completed in 10-15 seconds.

The second method is to perform a blood test for Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA). Most healthcare providers believe that a result of less than 4.0ng/mL for the PSA is normal. Any number above 4.0 ng/mL will require further investigation.

The best way to get to know your numbers is to have a full physical exam with lab work each year by your healthcare provider. I have chosen to schedule my annual exam during my birthday month.

This helps me to remember. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure three years ago, and I try to follow my healthcare providers advice and keep my stress and weight down. Diabetes runs in my family as well, which makes the risk for me developing the disease higher. Knowing my numbers helps me stay on top of my heath.

A Legal Guide for Unwed Dads

Chicago, IL As a strong leading advocate for the rights of fathers, I am frequently asked how the law treats unmarried fathers differently from married fathers. This is an important question, because more than 40 percent of American children are born each year to unwed parents leaving many children fatherless and at risk. Therefore, I think it is worthwhile to take a moment to address the current state of the law when it comes to the rights of unwed fathers in paternity and custody disputes. While there are a great number of misconceptions about legal issues surrounding unmarried parents, the law is very clear. When a child is born to unwed parents, the mother enjoys all parental rights. The father has none and this is extremely unjust.

In order to gain a legal footing, dads must be proactive in taking the correct legal steps to secure their rights.

Many fathers are incorrectly advised that all they need is to have their name on the baby’s birth certificate to establish paternity. In reality—though laws vary from state to state—when a man is listed on the birth certificate as sumption that he is the father, but right to custody of a child born out a parent, it does create the pre- this does not give him a superior of wedlock, nor does it automatically convey parental rights or duties to the father.

In Illinois, for example, a parent’s rights are established under the Illinois Parentage Act of 2015.

Under this statute, in order to establish paternity, an unwed father must either take a paternity test and obtain a court order establishing paternity or complete a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form. A father signing this form becomes legally responsible for the child. Therefore, experts caution that men should determine with certainty that they are indeed the biological father before signing because the completed form confers legal parenthood regardless of actual paternity.

Should a dispute regarding biological paternity arise, there are legal ways of attempting to reverse this process, but they are complicated and must be completed within a narrow window of time.

Once an unmarried father has established paternity, he can then seek custody and parenting time (formerly called “visitation”). In order to determine parent suitability for custody and parenting time, 10 April 25 - May 1, 2018

every state has a statute that lists criteria to be considered in making these determinations. Although these criteria vary from state to state, there are many common requirements. Depending on the age of the child, the child’s wishes as to which parent the child wishes to live with may be considered by the Court. Other practical factors, such as proximity to school and relatives, are important considerations. Negative factors that courts seriously consider include the presence of domestic violence by a parent or non-biological partner.

These legally established parental standards point to the most important factor for a father seeking custody or parenting time.

In order to prevail in Court, a father’s best bet is to meet all the criteria for successful parenting.

Be available to spend meaningful time with your child and assume responsibility for important tasks in childrearing, including scheduling and attending pediatrician and dental appointments, play dates, and parent/teacher conferences, ensuring homework is completed, and establishing routines around bedtime, meals and chores. Ex-

emplary behavior is particularly important with unmarried fathers because they will generally not have the track record of communication and conduct that an ex-husband can demonstrate.

Therefore, unwed dads can and must prove themselves worthy by being worthy to the court.

In short, unwed fathers seeking an enduring and meaningful role in their child’s upbringing should follow these important steps: 1. Be certain of paternity; 2. Act quickly to secure your rights in Court; and 3. Do not give up hope.

Talk about Carol Burnett antics -- this play has it all! “The Doppelgänger” is a crazy comedy with some one-line zingers that will keep you entertained and wiping away a few tears of laughter. Rainn Wilson doesn’t dissapoint with his witty character.

He is funny, believable, and a downright wild and crazy guy in this play. Each actor in Doppelgänger plays a convincible part that helps provide a credible flow to the story.

However, Celeste Cooper, whom we have seen in several plays, does a fantastic job bringing the farce together and making the transition between the characters work.

Director Tina Landau brings the funny and bizarre Matthew-Lee Erlbach play together. Erlbach is also an actor whose plays include the critically acclaimed solo

play, “Handbook for an American Revolutionary” (Gym at Judson), and “Eager to Lose,” a burlesque farce in rhyming verse (Ars Nova). He also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and runs a writing program he created for single mothers transitioning out of homelessness and prison. It would be nice to have another Doppelgänger like that.

The international greed, internal corruption, Brenda and Rick nudity, and absolute McCain craziness of doors slamming, mistaken identities, and perfectly timed falling props makes one wonder if this is what it takes to make a profit.

Apparently, playwright Matthew-Lee Erlbach thought so when he created the circus-like absurdity with its very colorful cast of characters to get the critical copper deal signed that only seems to make the rich wealthier while lacking the financial growth of the ordinary employee.

Rosie Guerekoyame, an overworked and very amusing maid, is an incognito political activist played by Celeste M. Cooper.

She works for Thomas, who is in pursuit of justice to save African workers with an agenda for a summit meeting that is to take place in the Irdley home.

Rosie’s plan is in jeopardy when Thomas mistakenly takes a tranquilizer that was meant for a zebra and is knocked out cold, unable to attend the meeting. However, upon realizing what happened to Thomas, she comes up with a plan that will keep the meeting going without a hitch -- Irdley doppelgänger Jimmy can substitute for Thomas. But Jimmy isn’t buying the idea.

Percy Julian Celebrated With School Mosaic Oak Park Education Foundation to once again transform the side of a school with an African American legend.

By Shari Noland Chicago Defender Contributing Writer When you first witness the 330-square-foot mosaic dedicated to Gwendolyn Brooks on her namesake middle school at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Clinton Ave. in Oak Park, its beauty is what captures you. It literally stops traffic. The slivers of colorful mirrors and glazed tiles in all kinds of shapes and sizes are breathtaking. And the swirls of circles with paintings of Gwendolyn Brooks herself, and other women of courage -- Maya Angelou, Jane Addams, Malala Yousafzai and Michelle Obama – will leave you in awe. But look a little closer and you’ll notice that it’s not just another pretty design. It’s a community affair. The faces and names of more than 80 individuals and businesses who donated to help make the project come to life are in beautiful tiles creatively weaved into the mosaic.

It’s an amazing transformation of a plain grey school wall that was celebrated last September at its unveiling. And now it’s about to happen all over again with another Oak Park namesake school, African American legend and former resident – Percy Julian, a pioneering scientist and Civil Rights activist.

“We were inspired to create a second project to build off the success of our middle school mo-

saic mural last summer at Brooks, dedicated to the renowned poet and school namesake in honor of her 100th birthday,” explained Executive Director of the Oak Park Education Foundation, Tracy Dell’Angela Barber. “It was a huge success and it did indeed reach the whole school community, as well as the broader Oak Park community.”

The mosaics are created through a partnership of the Oak Park Education Foundation (OPEF), renowned artist Tracy Van Duinen, who is also a visual arts teacher at Oak Park River Forest High School, and Oak Park’s District 97.

This year, Van Duinen is working closely with Percy Julian Middle School art teachers Ed Magierski and Phil Switzowicz. Students who attend OPEF’s BASE Camp, a summer project-based program, will have the opportunity to create the colorful and informative mosaic, learning about micro and macro pieces, sculptural elements, photo transfer, and tile preparation. Van Duinen’s design will incorporate scientific symbols and resemble an elaborate molecular structure.

OPEF, which is entirely funded through donations and its BASE Camp offerings, will once again be raising funds by selling tiles to individuals and businesses in the community.

“We have committed significant resources to these two school mural projects because we believe that the African American namesakes of our two middle

Van Duinen has worked at Oak Park River Forest High School for four years and is a member of the Chicago Public Arts Group. He received a Golden Apple Award in 2001 while working as a teacher at Austin Community Academy High School in Chicago.

OPEF is a nonprofit based in Oak Park with a mission to brings artists, architects, scientists, and technology experts into K-8th grade public school classrooms in the local school district. The project will be completed over the summer during its BASE Camp, which is a wide selection of paid summer enrichment offerings.

One of the more popular BASE Camp activities for the past eight years has been the mural project.

From the City to the ‘Burbs: CP Hits Several Events Around Town CP Readers, I have truly lived up to the name CP Around Town this past week.

Here’s a recap of just a few of my stops.

Karen Saffold, Deputy Chief of School Strategy & Planning, served as the Coordinator for the Chicago Public Schools UNCF “Kick Off.” The event featured Joan Collaso and Band, a super Line Dancing Troop that had everybody on the floor, the Kenwood Inspirational Choir, King HS Jazz Band, and one of the most popular DJs in the city-- Vince Adams.

Next was the Superintendents’ Commission for the Study of Demographics and Diversity Conference held at the Tinley Park Convention Center coordinated

by Superintendent Dr. Creg Williams, Thornton Fractional D215, and J. Kay Giles, retired Superintendent. Parents and teachers from over 25 school districts across the state of Illinois attended the three-day conference.

South Central Community Services, Inc. sponsored their 33rd Annual “Puttin’ On The Hits.” The show was produced by the President/Emeritus, Dr. Felicia Y. Blasingame. The show included performances featuring artists from Frankie Beverly, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson and many more.

Wendell Phillips Centennial Committee hosted their 15th Annual All-Alumni Prayer Breakfast at the Apostolic Church of God with keynote speaker Rev. Cy Fields, Pastor of New Landmark MB Church and special recognition of the Class of 1968. Hubert C. Jackson Jr. and Deborah Beard Norman served as coordinators of the breakfast.

Next stop was the National Women of Achievement, Inc. 29th Annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Oak Lawn Hilton Hotel. There were four honorees: Dorothy Brown, Perri Irmer, Anita Ponder, Esq. and Perri Small. Congratulations ladies.

On to Jackson State University Chicago Alumni Chapter’s 2018 “For The Love of Blue!” The awards luncheon was held at the Archangel Serbian Cultural Center in Lansing, Ill. Honorees included Osie Davenport, Augustine Emuwa, Dr. Albert Holmes and Everett Newchurch.

Last stop for the evening was the South Suburban Diversity Dinner. The topic for discussion was “How has the South Suburbs progressed with diversity.”

The event was held at Rich South High School in Richton Park, Ill. The program was facilitated by Troy Cicero, President of MulticultuReal Communications, Inc., a dynamic consultant, speaker, facilitator and trainer. Screech! Did that get your attention? It certainly has mine. Words are creative!

Our words create life or death. Words are the most important thing on earth. Who knew?

God spoke and created the world. The

talk. Self-talk is what you say to yourself about yourself. Self-talk is incessant. It never stops and that makes healthy selftalk vital. What is your self-talk like? Consider how your words make you feel. Do they encourage or discourage, tear down or build up? Unproductive, self-confining thoughts, conveyed by our words into real-life situations, can prevent us from realizing our God-given potential.

Bible is replete with references about the power of words. We cannot afford to speak indiscriminately. It can cost us a price we cannot afford to pay.

If we are to thoroughly address our words, we must address our thoughts.

The Importance of Maintaining Hair Extensions

Though it has always been big business, especially the authentic machine method of Hair Weev* Technology that I was blessed to be trained in, it was once a well-kept secret, one of the best kept secrets for a lady or gentleman who wanted to enhance their hair or improve their persona. Many used extensions if they were going through chemo, had alopecia or simply wanted to add fullness and/or length.

Some hair loss such as alopecia, which insights baldness, is hereditary; other reasons for hair loss are medications and illnesses. In these cases, the hair can be restored. Then there are braids, weevs, locs (yes people are adding commercial hair for locs); any kind of extension applied too tightly can severely damage your hair.

There is a certain amount of needed tension but not extreme pulling; creating excessive tightness can eventually damage the remaining hair and especially the hair follicle and the hair will not grow back. I understand some people like it extra tight for it to last longer, but that’s not good.

Clients with extensions should take maintenance seriously and visit their salon in a timely manner. You should have your Hair Weev serviced every four to six weeks, no more than eight weeks. If you go towards three months or longer, it is defeating the purpose of a Weev, which is to enhance and promote hair growth.

Your hair may mat and tangle to the degree that it Locs and that would be your fault not the person who did the service. In this case, frequency is better than intensity.

By Shanita Baraka Akinronde 12 voices A few years ago, I visited a church at the request of a friend.

At the end of service, the impassioned minister opened the doors of his church with the plea, “Is there anyone here today who is willing to accept our Father God into their lives, come forth at this time and give yourself to the Lord.”

As if on cue, three congregants stood up and moved down the aisle. Among the religious-renewal crew was a young man, who appeared to be in his mid- 20’s. He was tall in stature, easily over 6 feet with long eyes, arms and legs.

His skin was a caramel macchiato mixture, topped with cinnamon sprinkles. As he lobbied down the aisle, I noticed he was wearing jeans, a short-sleeved white t-shirt and workman’s boots—hardly “church-appropriate” attire. This fact was exacerbated by his actual walk itself. As he strode past my pew, it appeared that he actually leaned down the aisle, the way someone would if the world was turned sideways and they were still upright.

When he reached the minister and turned to face the congregation, he suddenly looked hesitant.

It was though he regretted his decision to seek deliverance. However, just when the minister wrapped up his message on salvation, which was swaddled in saliva, the former signaled his desire to speak. The minister acquiesced.

“I’m not really sure why I stopped in here today,” he stated softly.

“Go on son,” the minister encouraged.

“I want to say something that’s been on my mind though,” he continued. “I know you looking at me and you see a person who you THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

I understand.” He paused and shifted his body weight from one leg to another before he spoke again, this time a bit more quicker, in a staccato-laced fashion. “Even though I’m a grown man, I remember growing up and constantly being told by SOMEBODY what NOT to do.”

“Don’t do drugs.”

“Don’t steal.”

“Don’t get anybody pregnant.”

“Don’t go to jail.”

So guess what I did? I did each and every one of those things.

I’m not standing up here saying that the ONLY reason I got in trouble was because of me hearing those words, but what I AM telling you is hearing them all the time sure didn’t help. If you want to make a difference, stop telling young people what they SHOULD NOT do. There is something called a self-fulfilling prophecy and when people only focus on bad things that’s what they’re going to get.”

The room was dead silent.

He went on. “I’m not a smart man. I dropped out of high school right after my girlfriend had our son because I needed money to support them. I ended up stealing and got busted and ended up in jail. I know I made a lot of the decisions myself that got me where I am today and I take responsibility for that. But I also know that a lot of what I was told as a young man growing up also led to those bad decisions in the first place. And I was fed a whole lot of garbage.

So I came up to the front of the church today to share what God put on MY heart today.

“It’s time to start building our young people up and it starts at home. They will become what you tell them they can be or they will become what you constantly tell them NOT to be. People’s minds absorb the words they hear most

often. Pretty soon the ‘don’t’ part falls away.”

I sat back in my seat, stunned.

His message hit home for me, because it gave me a perspective I had never considered and one that made perfect sense. It reminded me why I consistently share one of my favorite Marianne Williamson quotes with my own two sons, and which I will now share with you, dear readers: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, ‘who are you not to be?’ You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Let the church say, Amen.

by Ian Martin 12 Voices There is a new closet to come out of in the Black community and on the door is a label that reads “irreligious,” or perhaps “nonbeliever.” Not to split hairs between those of us who are agnostic, atheist, or “spiritual,” my point is that there is a new population of mostly young Americans who reject the traditional standards of religious faith. According to Gallup polls, the number of religiously unaffiliated adults (“nones”) has doubled to 18 percent. This change is largely generational, as more than a third of those born after 1981 now say they have no religion. This marks an unprecedented shift in American culture and urges us to answer some difficult questions. What do we do with this information? What comes next?

While these shifting tides are not exclusive to the Black community, Black irreligion strikes a particular chord in consideration of how central the church has been to my people. Today, Black people identify as more religious than any other ethnic group. According to data published by the Pew Research Center, 87 percent of Black people believe in God. This makes sense in context of the journey.

Black people continue to endure great adversity. Christianity has been an anchor through the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Jim Crow before then, and the initial American chattel slavery. It is almost unpardonable to be a nonbeliever in the Black community, and so the irony of publishing this in a Black newspaper is not lost on me. But I recognize slavery to be the introduction of Christianity to Black people. History tells me our ancestors worshipped very different Gods before they were abducted and viscously forced into the servitude of American Whites. It antagonizes me, the fact that Jesus was originally given to Black people (and most all POCs) by White folk.

As stated before, research shows that young people are con-

siderably less religious. The Pew Research Center says that, “onein-four members of the Millennial generation [...] are unaffiliated with any particular faith. [...] More unaffiliated than members of Generation X were at a comparable point in their life cycle (20 percent in the late 1990s) and twice as unaffiliated as Baby Boomers were as young adults (13 percent in the late 1970s).” For the sake of this research, Millennial is defined as those ages 18 to 34 years old in 2015. Therefore, the oldest Millennial was born in 1981 and the youngest in 1997. Millennial Americans tend to attend religious services far less than older Americans, and when compared, fewer say that religion is very important in their lives. This is important because Millennials are also the largest generation of adults. The Washington Post reported last year on Pew Center Research findings that Millennials had surpassed baby boomers to become America’s largest living generation. The American Millennial generation is also far more progressive. As the country moves forward on critical social issues, this progressiveness will have political implications, including the forward-thinking idea of irreligion.

My question becomes, how do we take the form of organized religion and repurpose it? The idea that 200 or more people gather in a space weekly around like-minded ideas, group action, storytelling, art and song, in an effort to establish meaning -- that doesn’t sound like a bad idea. In the Black community, I have seen an incredible textual analysis of the Bible. What would happen if we did the same with another text? I have read Shakespeare with stories as great as those found in the King James Version of the Bible. What would happen if we all read Toni Morrison and Ta-Nehisi Coates together? Or José Esteban Muñoz and “The Autobiography of Malcolm X?” What if we kept the form and removed the narrative of White Jesus? In an effort to establish meaning, that is a noble idea.

There is a brave new world out there, one that begs us to finally start unpacking what was left for us by generations of people who are no longer here. How we deal with religion, race, and gender have been irreparably defined by people who didn’t have the questions we have today, nor the technology, nor the access to information. The community of religion is a beautiful thing, but to establish new meaning, we must abandoned the literature of dead White men and redefine Faith.

To patrons of Commonwealth Edison Company: Commonwealth Edison Company (“ComEd”) hereby gives notice to the public that on April 16, 2018, it filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (“ICC” or “Commission”) its annual formula rate update, including updated cost inputs, reconciliations of ComEd’s approved revenue requirement and return on equity, and supporting testimony and other information, all for the purpose of determining, pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Illinois Public Utilities Act (the “Act”), updated rates for delivery services applicable throughout ComEd’s service territory in northern Illinois to be applicable beginning with the first monthly billing period of 2019.

As provided in Section 16-108.5 of the Act, the updated costs are based on final historical cost data for calendar year 2017 reflected in ComEd’s most recently filed annual FERC Form 1, plus projected plant additions for calendar year 2018, as well as the associated adjustments to accumulated depreciation (change in depreciation reserve), depreciation expense, and accumulated deferred income taxes. In addition, ComEd’s 2017 actual costs, which are now known, are reconciled with the corresponding costs that had been used as part of the prior formula rate update filing. Those updated costs, other inputs and reconciliations, collectively result in a distribution revenue requirement on which new delivery services rates are to be based (referred to in the filing as the “2019 Rate Year Net Revenue Requirement”) of $2,697,978,000. This is a decrease of $22,906,000 from the revenue requirement approved by the ICC in last year’s formula update, ICC Docket Number 17-0196.

For residential customers receiving bundled fixed price electric service from ComEd, the delivery services charges are only a portion of the total bill. The remaining portion includes the cost of the electricity supply and other services, which are subject to the procurement process established by Section 1-75 of the Illinois Power Agency Act and the provisions of Section 16-111.5 of the Public Utilities Act and/or to regulation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Using rates applicable with the January 2018 billing period for such other components, the estimated total bill impacts of changes in the delivery component are provided herein. Increases are denoted by a + sign and decreases are denoted by a – sign.

For such customers, the delivery portion of electric bills represents approximately 42% of the total electric bill, on average, while the supply portion accounts for about 42%, the transmission portion accounts for approximately 10% and other charges such as taxes account for the remaining 6%. Using these electricity supply and other charges, the updated rates for the delivery portion result in an overall change in the total residential bills, on average, of approximately -$0.50 per month or an estimated -0.6%. Total bill impacts for residential customers vary by delivery class and electric usage. For example, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 330 kilowatt-hours (“kWhs”) per month, is -$0.78 per month or -1.6%. Likewise, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 723 kWhs per month, is -$0.33 per month or -0.3%. Furthermore, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 794 kWhs per month, is +$0.27 per month or +0.3%. Additionally, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 1,652 kWhs per month, is -$0.76 or -0.4%. ComEd does not estimate total bill impacts for residential customers supplied by Retail Electric Suppliers.

The updated delivery service rates for nonresidential customers in the Watt-Hour and Small Load delivery classes (100 kilowatts (“kW”) or less of demand), with varying usages result in an overall average percentage change in the total bill of -7.0% and -2.5%, respectively. Nonresidential customers with larger electric loads (greater than 100 kW) have a wide range of electric load characteristics in addition to electricity supply costs that cannot be reasonably estimated; therefore, the overall effect of the updated delivery service rates on an electric bill for such customers cannot be determined.

The updated delivery service rates include ComEd’s updated costs of delivering electricity through its distribution system and apply to all ComEd customers independent of whether electricity supply is procured and provided by ComEd or by a third party (i.e., a Retail Electric Supplier). These updated rates will take effect beginning with the first day of the January 2019 monthly billing period.

A copy of the materials filed with the Commission and supporting data and documents may be inspected by any interested party at ComEd’s office located at Three Lincoln Centre in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. In addition, Commonwealth Edison Company will place an electronic version of this Public Notice with estimated bill impacts on its Internet website www.ComEd.com.

Customers are advised that the Commission may alter or amend the rates after hearings held pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Act and 83 Illinois Administrative Code Part 200, and may increase or decrease individual rates in amounts other than those requested by ComEd. Cubs Take 2 of 3 In The Mile High City As They Search For Consistency Sports by The Bigs Blame it on the fluky weather that seems to have skipped clean over Spring this year or just old fashion early season struggles, at 8-8, the Cubs search for consistency continued as they rolled into the Mile-High City for a three-game set. 4/20- Game 1 FINAL – Cubs 16 COL 5 Cubs Bats Take Flight In Mile High City Coming in…

The Cubs were fresh off a 8-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday while the Rockies took an L to the Pittsburgh Pirates in their last outing 10-2 Wednesday night. The Cubs entered the night in 4th place in the NL Central while the Rockies are in 2nd place in the NL West.

How It Went Down The Cubs got off to an early 2-0 lead on a Javy Baez two-run bomb but the Rockies answered right back with a Charlie Blackmon RBI single and a Nolan Arenado two-run homerun in his first game back after a five-game suspension. The Cubs took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning behind an Anthony Rizzo groundout RBI and an Arenado throwing error which scored Kris Bryant from 3rd. The Cubs got a huge seven-run sixth inning capped off by a monster three-run homerun to dead center by Kyle Schwarber to make it 12-3. They tacked on three more in the eight with RBI’s from Schwarber, Contreras and Heyward and added one in the 9th with an RBI infield single from Bryant.

4/21-Game 2 Rockies Blow Cubs High With Bounce Back 5-3 W Coming on…

After opening a can of “Whoop-Ass” on the Rockies on 4/20 with a 16-5 victory, the Cubs were looking to notch another W in the Mile High City.

Friday’s game was a hit parade as Albert Almora Jr., Javier Baez & Kyle Schwarber combined for eleven of the team’s season high eighteen hits and nine RBI’s. The Cubs placed INF/OF Ben Zobrist on the 10-day DL with a sore back and recalled the local Colorado kid, David Bote, from Triple A Iowa.

It was all good early as Willson Contreras raked a 2-run double in the 1st scoring Almora Jr. and Baez that gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead. And Yu Darvish was basically unhittable through 4 innings. But a 2-out walk to pitcher Tyler Andersen followed by a DJ LeMahieu double, singles from Gerardo Parra & Nolan Arenado and a Trevor Story double capped off a 3-walk inning from Yu and gave the Rockies a 5-2 lead. On that note, the fat lady was just about ready to sing.

The Cubs had 3 hits in the first inning and only managed 3 hits the rest of the way.

4/22-Game 3 Cubs Get Rocky 9-7 W, take 2 of 3 from Rockies Coming in…

The Cubs took a 5-2 L after laying the smack down in Game 1 of this three-game set. Yu Darvish

couldn’t be touched through four innings…then came the dreaded fifth where he walked starting pitcher Tyler Andersen with two outs and everything went downhill from there. The Rockies scored five runs in the inning and didn’t look back. Darvish and fifth innings haven’t been on the same page so far this season, but he’s got to get past whatever is causing these meltdown.

How it went down…

Bryant was hit in the helmet in the 1st inning. He never went down but seemed dazed. He’s passed all tests so far and has a laceration above his eye from his sunglasses. The Cubbies added three more in the top of the 7th as Almora Jr. got a groundout RBI and Baez doubled to score two more, giving the Cubs a 9-4 lead.

The Rockies got their three right back on a Ryan McMahon ground out and a David Dahl single to make it 9-7.

Brandon Morrow picked up his 4th save of the season to lock down their 10th win of the year.

Next up The Cubs travel to Cleveland for the first time since the 2016 World Series for a 2-game set with the Indians. The game 1 starters are Tyler Chatwood (0-3) v Josh Tomlin (0-2).

Sip and Savor Coffee Shop Tells Chicagoans ‘Black Dollars Matter’

By Charles Preston Chicago Contributing Writer There is an old saying: “Go where you’re appreciated and not tolerated.”

Many of Chicago’s South Siders took the adage to heart after recent incidents at Starbucks garnered national attention.

Starbucks, the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, has seen public backlash after a cellphone video captured the arrests of two Black men who were waiting for a friend in one of its Philadelphia stores.

Outrage sparked boycotts all over the nation–especially in Chicago–such as the one headed by the Black Star Project.

“This is not about coffee. This is not about tea. This is not about hot chocolate. This is about young Black men in America, and Black families, and Black people having a place here in America,” says Philip Jackson, Executive Director.

Groups around the nation, with their righteous anger, took to the streets to protest the company. Most expressed their grievances on social media timelines. But this past Saturday, a local Black-owned coffee shop saw a heavy influx in business due to a call to make “Black Dollars Matter.”

Sip & Savor coffee spot, located on 43rd and Forrestville– deep in the heart of Bronzeville–was booming Saturday after sending out flyers to make “Black Dollars Matter.” Many daily customers and Chicago notables poured into the coffee shop to order their favorite menu items, commune with Black Chicago, and discuss the events that sparked the occasion.

“I always look at in two [ways]. When something like this happens, it can either be a moment or a movement,” says Trez Pugh III, owner of Sip & Savor. “Right now, it’s a moment. Everybody feels good about going out and spending their dollars with Black businesses at the moment. [If it is ] a movement remains to be seen because more people must get involved and we cannot let it die.”

In his 13th year as owner of Sip & Savor, Pugh’s Hyde Park and Bronzeville locations are critically acclaimed, financially successful, and an example of what many Black Chicagoans envision as the epitome of a community business. Pugh believes Sip & Savor’s good reputation comes from its ability to offer what competitors cannot.

“There are local artists who have their art up here. Local musicians perform at the patio in the back. I based my company on the 5 C’s–crisp, clean, classy, consistent, and customer service. You abide by 5 C’s, you can’t go wrong. When things happened at the other company, it became a teachable moment for my employees,” says Pugh.

Pugh didn’t organize the Black Dollars Matter event by himself. “I received a call from Austin saying that he would love to partner with my shop to put this together.”

Austin Robinson, 28, owns Member’s Only boutique, a clothing boutique based in the Homewood suburb. The Starbucks incident pushed him to reach out to Pugh to start a relationship and begin collaborating under the focus of “Black Dollars Matter.”

“I just got fed up,” says Robinson. “A couple of months

Robinson even brought his son to the Sip and Savor. Mama Evelyn, a longtime activist and community organizer based in Roseland, commended Robinson on being active in his son’s life in light of negative depictions of Black fatherhood. She then gifted his son with $7 on behalf of the National Block Club University. Both then posed for a picture in front of several women at Mama Evelyn’s table.

“That’s the community we need,” says Robinson. “It’s really simple to support Black business. We have so many celebrities and influencers with social media. Chance the Rapper can literally tweet out ‘Hey, shop at Sip and Savor’ and everyone will be up here right now supporting the business. It’s that simple.”

Estate planning attorneys help you plan your estate and give advice on transferring and managing your assets before and after your death.

Insurance professionals evaluate insurance needs and recommend appropriate products and strategies.

Investment advisors provide advice about investment options and asset allocation, and can help you plan a strategy to manage your investment portfolio.

The most important member of the team, however, is you. Your needs and objectives drive the team, and once you’ve carefully considered any recommendations, all decisions lie in your hands.

Why can’t I do it myself?

You can, if you have enough time and knowledge, but developing a comprehensive financial plan may require expertise in several areas.
