CITY NEWS Two New Obama Foundation Programs to Develop Leaders The Obama Foundation opened applications for a program designed to empower and train emerging young leaders to tackle local challenges. Building upon the Foundation’s pilot trainings, the Community Leadership Corps (CLC) program will bring together motivated young leaders ages 18 to 25 in Chicago, Phoenix, Ariz., and Columbia, S.C,. who are seeking opportunities to grow as civic leaders and eager to address issues in their communities. CLC is a six-month community leadership development program for young leaders looking to engage more deeply in civic work. The program will include in-person trainings and online programming. Those selected for the Community Leadership Corps will develop a project to address an issue in their communities, and meet other civically-minded individuals they can collaborate with moving forward. These convenings include: •A two-day introductory kickoff in June where CLC participants will take part in training activities designed to encourage self-reflection and build a basic organizing framework. After the kickoff event, CLC participants will recruit at

least two other people in their network to join their project team in order to tackle an issue they identify. •A three-day bootcamp in August for the CLC participants and their project teams to receive feedback on their plans, get trained on the specific skills needed to implement their action items, and identify the resources needed to support their work. •Community-based work in September and October, when CLC teams will work in their communities to implement the project they have designed. The Foundation will continue to support CLC participants with online learning and check-ins on their project implementation. The application for CLC can be found at obama.org/clc/. The application will close on Friday, May 11 at 11:59PM CT. The other program will train and support 200 promising young leaders across Africa working in government, civil society, and the private sector. The Foundation received nearly 10,000 applications for 200 slots. The Obama Foundation Leaders: Afri-

ca program will launch in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a five-day convening. The convening will run from July 14 through July 18 and include plenary sessions, problem-solving workshops, and technical trainings that will help these young emerging leaders drive positive change throughout Africa. The convening will also include a town hall meeting with President Obama where he will hear about their experiences and the work they’re doing. Following the South Africa convening, leaders will remain connected to the Foundation and one another via an online platform where they will engage in topical discussions, access leadership and training resources, and participate in trainings and webinars led by experts and industry leaders. The individuals selected to participate in the Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa program will ultimately serve as the backbone of a larger ecosystem of Foundation changemakers across the continent and, eventually, the world, as the Foundation launches similar leadership programs in regions around the world.

ComEd Reports: Customers Have Saved More Than $3 Billion by Making Smarter Energy Choices According to ComEd, customers have saved more than $3 billion total since 2008 when the company rolled out its energy efficiency program. That means every one of ComEd’s more than 4 million customers have saved the equivalent of about $15 per week for one year. Residential, commercial, and industrial customers have used 27.9 million fewer net megawatt-hours of electricity because of ComEd’s energy efficiency offerings – enough to power 3.1 million average homes for a year. Offerings range from free assessments of homes and businesses to rebates and incentives for buying or investing in products or changing habits that reduce energy consumption.

“More and more customers are discovering that they can take advantage of ComEd programs to take greater control of their energy use, save money, and reduce their carbon footprint,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd, “and we’ve seen the power of smart and creative ideas that show customers the way. Our energy efficiency program has grown substantially over the past 10 years, and it will continue to grow for at least the next 10, allowing homeowners, businesses, and other facilities to save even more energy and money.” Reducing energy consumption also benefits the environment by reducing carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. As a result of ComEd’s en-

ergy efficiency program, customers have avoided 38.9 billion pounds of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to planting enough trees to cover more than half of the state Illinois or taking 3.7 million cars off the road for one year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency earlier this month recognized ComEd’s energy efficiency leadership for a ninth year in a row. COVER STORY Chicagoans Share Why They Went Vegan

utilize any animal products. There are some people who still consider themselves vegan because they do not eat anything with parents but still wear leather or fur items. As you can imagine, changing your diet this drastically can be life altering. The great thing about veganism is it has amazing health

Ebony Lucas, 42, of North Kenwood: I have been vegan for one year. I started because I wanted to bring some discipline into my eating habits. I quickly learned that being vegan, like any other healthy eating Ebony Lucas routine, requires preparation. Vegan eating can be as unhealthy as any other diet. In the beginning, I was very deliberate about paying attention to the protein, B12, and D food sources. There are also a lot of processed fake meat and soy products out there. It is important to find satisfying meals and healthy natural snacks. I also found that restaurants and banquet halls are very accommodating and happy to make vegan meals, so my diet out does not have to consist of salads. I’m the only one in my family who is vegan. But quite often my husband and kids eat my food and skip the meat. I made vegan gumbo and they ate the whole pot! Christopher Scott, 35, South Side of Chicago: I recently converted to the vegan lifestyle on January 1st of this year. For a while now I have been struggling with eating right and working out to get in better shape. Even Christopher Scott after months and months in the gym and dieting, I would see very little results. Being a 6’5, 290-pound overweight, slightly-obese man wasn’t working for me and it seemed that I would fluctuate between 275 to 290 pounds, despite trying to eat healthy and work out. For a few years, I had been contemplating dropping meat out of my diet due to the way America allowed the meat industry to handle the animals before they are slaughtered. It was very inhumane with all the research I had done and not to mention the quality of life that these animals had was insanely depressing. I felt that if the animal this meat came from lived a sad life of torture and stress, by my consumption of their meat, I am no better than the companies that host them. So, it became more and more mental for me when I would cook for my family to the point where we stopped

The Vegan Trend: Why so many people are changing their diets By Reneé Matthews, M.D. aka Dr. Renee Defender Contributing Writer What do Russell Simmons, Lisa Bonet, Brandy, Keenen Ivory Wayans and Angela Bassett all have in common? They are all either vegan or vegetarian. There are many people changing their lifestyles for different reasons. Some are seeking better health choices while others do not like the way animals are treated so they change their lifestyle to reflect that. Back in the ‘80s vegetarianism was the big eating trend. Around 2016, people started stating they were vegan. So what gives? A 2008 study was published by Vegetarian Times that showed how 7.3 million people follow a vegetarian-based diet. Fast forward to 2017, according to Vegetarian Times, there’s been a 600 percent increase in people identifying as vegans in the U.S in the last three years. According to a report by research firm GlobalData, only 1 percent of U.S. consumers claimed to be vegan in 2014. And in 2017, that number rose to 6 perTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

So, what exactly is a vegan and why is everyone seemingly scrambling to become one? A vegan is a person who does not eat or use animal products. The difference between being a vegan and a vegetarian is that some vegetarians eat dairy products and eggs and also use animal products such as leather and fur.

The term vegan was actually coined back in 1944 by a British woodworker named Donald Watson who felt that because vegetarians ate dairy and eggs, he was going to create a new term called “vegan” to describe people who did not. Veganism is a lifestyle because, in addition to eating a plant-based diet, those choosing this lifestyle also do not wear or www.chicagodefender.com

benefits. •Weight loss – Studies have found that people who follow a vegan diet lost more weight than those following a Western diet. •Lower blood sugar – A study showed that 43 percent of vegan participants were able to reduce blood-sugar-lowering medication compared to only 26 percent who followed an American Diabetes Association diet. •Cancer prevention–Colorectal and prostate cancer rates are higher in people who eat meat. It is also believed that animal fats cause some cancers. •Lower risks of heart disease – People on a vegan diet tend to eat fewer calories, which results in lower BMI (Body Mass Index) and reduced risk of obesity, a leading cause for heart disease. According to Medical News Today, “Animal fats have been linked to a range of illnesses and conditions, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, and various cancers. Animal sources are likely to account for 13 of the top 15 sources of cholesterol-raising fats in the U.S.” More recently, people are using the term “plant-based diet.” People who eat a plant-based diet are only eating foods that come from plants, such as vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits, but no animal products. This is synonymous with vegan except some people who eat a plantbased diet still wear fur coats or leather shoes and coats etc. The Pros and Cons As with anything there are al-

eating beef, pork, processed meats and most of all fishes. We only consumed turkey and chicken, which aren’t treated any better but I felt they were the lesser of the evils in meat products. Eventually, I decided that I would do without meat and all meat products. Anything that came from an animal I would no longer consume. Dairy products cause inflammation in the system. Why would I want inflammation in my system? So, with those understandings, I went on a vegan/plant-based diet. Cold turkey, so to speak. Our society and government are only concerned with MONEY and how to influence the American people to spend their money. They don’t care for us from a health perspective unless we are on lifelong prescriptions with high medical bills. I say this because I was pre-diabetic/ pre-hypertension a few years ago. My dietician recommended a diet for me that I felt wouldn’t improve my conditions because it meant I 4 May 2 - 8, 2018

Vitamin B-12 is used to protect red blood cells and nerve cells. Therefore, a B-12 deficiency can cause anemia and nervous system problems. There are some vegan foods that are fortified with B-12, which means the vitamin has been added to the food because it wasn’t originally there. Some of the B-12 fortified foods are soy, seaweed, cereals, nutritional yeast, and some plant milks, to name a few.

Another con is that eating out as a vegan can be restrictive; although now there are plenty of restaurants that cater to vegans. Some people who take the vegan leap also begin eating more carbohydrates than they normally did when they were eating meat. This of course can have a negative effect on their health. The drastic change in diet can also interfere with current medical conditions, so anyone thinking of going vegan should consult their physician beDishes like this cauliflower soup have become popular vegan fore changing their diets. took meds every day for the rest of my life. She recommended a range of diet products to drink and meals with no nutritional value besides low calories. In my eyes a lot of people are scared to go vegan or can’t fathom being vegan because their main question is, “What will I eat and how will I get my protein. Where do I begin etc.?” Well going vegan is easier than you think. All you have to do is put your mind to it! Once you have established mentally that this is the lifestyle you wish to follow, the mind will accept it. Not only that, but you will think and look for creative ways to challenge yourself with meals tasting better than before without meat! Well, maybe for those of us who cook! Briana McCarthy, 38, South Side of Chicago: I’ve been living this lifestyle for nearly two years now. After much prayer and feeling a nudge from God, I began my plant-based journey in July 2016. I gave up meat and dairy because I wanted to take my health and caring for my temple seriously. I

was already lactose-intolerant and I didn’t digest pork or beef well and I lost my desire for fish and chicken. So, after a Briana few days of reMcCarthy search, I took the plunge and I haven’t looked back. One thing I feel everyone should know about living a plant-based lifestyle is that it is not as difficult as they think. There are plenty of delicious and healthy options out there that they won’t even miss meat or cheese. I was a MAJOR cheese fanatic. If I can give up cheese, anyone can. Dr. Natalie P. Santiago, 49, of Roseland: I’ve been vegan six years and a vegetarian for 30 years. I was against animals being used in experiment, and against animal cruelty. One day (April 5, 1988) God asked me if I was against animal cruelty and experimentation on animals, why did I eat them? www.chicagodefender.com

So, I never did again. I knew dairy cows are horribly abused, but giving up dairy was hard because I love cheese. I read an article Dr. Natalie P. in April 2012 Santiago and it didn’t say anything I didn’t already know, but somehow that was the trigger for me to give up dairy. One thing everyone should know is eating a vegan diet can be very healthy and very inexpensive if you stick with whole foods and limit/cut out processed foods. Bonus: Plants have plenty of protein. We should all focus on our health because if you do not have health, you have nothing else. Veganism may not be for you but there are definite benefits to eating more plant-based foods and less processed foods. Remember, if you decide to adopt the vegan life-

style, talk to your doctor to make certain your physician thinks it is a good idea with your current health condition. Also, you will want that person to monitor you so that you do not become deficient in some of the vitamins that animal products do provide. Chicago State University Launches New Innovation Lab The College of Arts and Sciences at Chicago State University (CSU) recently launched a stateof-the-art Innovation Laboratory. The unprecedented addition to the Mathematics and Computer Science (MAC) department places CSU among a small, distinguished group of Chicago-based universities to establish an innovation center and one of an even smaller number of facilities to house an innovation lab on the city’s South Side. “The main purpose of the Innovation Lab is to invigorate students to be entrepreneurial,” says department Chairman Dr. Rohan Attele. “It will provide an opportunity for students to convert issues into ideas and ideas into enterprises using their academic knowledge. Students can provide innovative solutions employing technology to intractable issues in their communities, thus becoming social entrepreneurs.” Statistics show that group work significantly improves the innovative thinking of individuals, which increases the chances of success of a project. “The idea behind an Innovation Lab is simple,” says Dr. Anil Mehta, MCS assistant professor. “It is ‘an enabling center’ where an individual student, or a group of students, can feel at ease in sharing their ideas. Students will have opportunities to interact with

their peers, faculty, and industry leaders who can help them bring their innovative ideas to fruition.” According to Mehta, the Innovation Lab is different from either a co-working space where previously developed ideas are worked out simultaneously or an incubator (or an accelerator) where people with developed ideas are looking for business, financial, and legal support. He says, “It is instead a platform for students by students that, through the power of human interaction, provides budding student entrepreneurs a chance to build support networks and it will help to guide CSU students, high school students and community members toward the application of their ideas and into entrepreneurship.” The Innovation Lab brings influence from other successful models such as Harvard Business School’s i-Labs and the SFO Converge at the San Francisco airport. “The notion of an airport having an innovation lab was especially invigorating for the CSU concept,” said Mehta. “We believe that our plan to have a satellite lab at the 95th and Dan Ryan Red Line train station is equally inventive.” The lab will maintain an extensive roster of national and international mentors involving fellow students, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and professors to provide

mentorship, support, and guidance on ways students can adapt their academic studies to more beneficial and useful pursuits for society. Mehta says, “By being involved in solving a problem so near to their hearts that is not necessarily trackable, students will have a chance to tap into the infinite potential that an innovative mind can bring, thus making innovators out of our students.” “One example of a lab project in progress is ‘Cluster Computing,’ where multiple computers are linked and managed via software to compute in parallel. This process conserves power and can be used for streaming services, such as for CSU Radio or CSU-TV. We hope that such discussions will help raise the level of conversations on campus, and nurture students to become problem solvers, in addition to being skilled professionals,” Mehta says. “We are optimistic that the new lab will play a crucial role in the recruitment, retention, graduation, and post-graduation employment of our students,” says Interim President Dr. Rachel W. Lindsey. “Bringing similar and disparate disciplines together enhance new ways of thinking and foster new avenues for entrepreneurship, an approach that is essentially entrepreneurship of the future.”

Sales-Griffin, who says he became an entrepreneur by mistake, announced his candidacy for mayor last week. The 30-year-old is a native of Chicago and a graduate of Northwestern University. Willie Wilson

Mayoral Candidate Willie Wilson Sends Message to the Black Community Businessman Willie Wilson recently announced his desire for the Black community to welcome candidates in the election for Chicago mayor. Some people have called for the Black community to unite behind a single candidate, but Wilson does not support that concept. In a statement he released, he said: “While I understand the frustration, I welcome all the candidates into the race,” “Each of them has the right to run and the fact that so many have come forward only serves to show how desperate the citizens of our great city are to get rid of Rahm [Emanuel]. “We need better turnout in all the minority communities because we absolutely need a new mayor, Rahm must go.” Wilson continued. We need a mayor for the working people of Chicago, not for the elite and the 1 percent. “This campaign is not about race, it’s about new leadership and new priorities. We need to reopen the mental health clinics, end the violence in the Black community and reopen the schools that Rahm closed. We need relief from his

many nickel and dime taxes including red light cameras, ticket boots, bag taxes, property taxes and the many hidden taxes that make it so hard for the working families that are leaving the city in record numbers.” “For those in the Black community who feel that we need unity to win, let me say that this has been put into the minds of many to discourage voting. Because of the many tricks like this of the old machine politics, adding candidates and suggesting disunity, I say they cannot fool us again. “We have already begun our walk through the 77 communities of Chicago and the response from all people…from [all] walks of life is overwhelmingly positive. They want change and they don’t care about the color of the skin; [they want a] person who shows them respect and understanding of their struggle. “We especially need to involve the youngest of our voters and hear their issues so having very young candidates in the election is a very good thing. season. “Don’t be fooled by surprise phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents with threats or promises of a big refund if you provide them with your private information,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “If you’re surprised to get a call from the IRS, it almost certainly isn’t the real IRS. We generally initially contact taxpayers by mail.” The Dirty Dozen is compiled annually by the IRS and lists a variety of common scams taxpayers may encounter any time during the year. Many of these con games peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns or hire someone to do so. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) reports they have become aware of over 10,000 victims who have collectively paid over $54 million as a result of phone scams since October 2013. Scammers make unsolicited calls claiming to be IRS officials. They demand that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a wire transfer or a prepaid debit card or gift card, like an iTunes card. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone www.chicagodefender.com

“robo-calls,” or via a phishing email. The IRS also reminded taxpayers recently that scammers change tactics. Aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat to taxpayers, but variations of the IRS impersonation scam continue year-round and they tend to peak when scammers find prime opportunities to strike. Here are some things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS will never: A. Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes. B. Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying. C. Demand that taxes be paid without giving the taxpayer the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed. D. Ask for credit or debit card

Local Dentist Creates Mobile Unit to Provide Free Service for Kids By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Dr. Ogbonna Bowden is a local dentist, one of nine children, born and raised in Englewood in a three-bedroom apartment. His father raised all the children to live a life of service and that lesson followed Dr. Bowden and his siblings throughout their careers. Dr. Bowden has created “Smiles of Tomorrow,” a mobile unit that travels to schools and daycares to provide kids with FREE dental services. He saw the lack of medical services in low-income communities and wanted to do something about it. From a young age, he aspired to become a dentist and coincidentally three of his brothers followed the same path as well. With his success in the dental field, Dr. Bowden vowed to make dental care available for all communities. Bowden shared more information about his practice with the Defender. Defender: Walk me through your childhood in Chicago and how that led you to become a dentist. Bowden: I grew up in Englewood, born and raised. My parents still live in Englewood. I went to Bass Elementary School on 66th and May. I went to Lindblom for high school. But what made me want to become a dentist was the lack of access in our communities. All my friends used to cover

Dr. Ogbonna Bowden their mouths when they talked and have toothaches at school. My mom and her family never really went to the dentist because they got hurt by the dentist. Everyone always thought of the dentist as a painful experience. Seeing how straight teeth changed my brother’s life was also a huge inspiration. Before he had braces, he was underperforming in school and covering his mouth when he talked. Once he got his teeth straightened, it changed his life. I saw the impact that dentistry can make on individuals and the community, and thought that this would be the perfect profession for me. I also like art and using my hands. Defender: You attended Chicago State University (CSU), a university with many notable Chicago alumni and it sometimes doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. Do you mind

sharing the experience you had as a student at CSU? Bowden: It was an incredible experience and one of the best experiences I had. I think a lot of times in our community when we go to a college like Chicago State, we don’t take advantage of the small student-to-teacher ratio. You get so much more. I could go directly to a professor and have [him or her] break down what I didn’t understand until I reached the necessary level of understanding. It was great. In my opinion, I couldn’t have gotten a better education in chemistry from another undergraduate institution. Defender: Is it true that Dr. Bowden loves kids? How important are Chicago’s children to your work? Bowden: They are extremely important. This is why we have Smiles of Tomorrow, a mobile aspect of our enterprise. It goes out to daycares and schools in impovBowden visits daycares and schools to teach kids that tooth erished areas to deliver educationdecay is preventable. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER www.chicagodefender.com

al materials about oral health. The devastation from cavities, which comes from tooth decay, effects the lower socioeconomic class the most. Areas like South Shore, Englewood, and Roseland have higher rates of tooth decay than everyone else. We have to teach the children early and hope they do better than the last generation because cavities and tooth decay can be prevented. It’s preventable but kids miss days of school because of the chronic pain caused by toothaches. Tooth decay is the most chronic disease found in children. I do what I can to go into these communities to inform them. Defender: What does dentistry lack in serving low-income youth? Bowden: Reimbursement. The cost to deliver dentistry is so high and the reimbursements from Medicaid and the Illinois programs are so low that a lot of people don’t do it.

Defender: So, how do we fix this? Bowden: It has to be more appetizing for dentists because they are thinking about profit margins. A lot of dentists come out of school with $400K in debt and have to decide if they will spend their time practicing on low-income patients when the state of Illinois doesn’t adequately reimburse. I do the things I do straight from the heart. Profit margins are not as important as the human being. Defender: What is the one thing you would like Black people to know about why you are community-centered? It’s all about exposure. In the communities I mentioned earlier, there aren’t many professionals to guide our youth. It’s about class and race. We have generations of poverty that young people grow into. Where is their exposure unless they seek it out? Someone has to reach back and get them so that they will be exposed. May 2 - 8, 2018 7

HEALTH

AHA’s Most Powerful Voices Gospel Concert Encourages Healthy Living “We want to Live” was the mantra heard loud and clear at the 2018 Most Powerful Voices Gospel Concert sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, Blue Cross Blue Shield, NBC 5 Chicago, Illinicare Health, Chicago Defender and iHeart Media. This year’s event aimed to educate our attendees about the term “social determinants of health,” empower our communities to actively engage in changing the narrative, and challenge each individual to commit to living their healthiest life possible. The Most Powerful Voices VIP Reception featured an inspirational stroke survivor story by Toneal Jackson, recognized local advocates (Cecil Wilson, Nyasha Nyamapfene, and Star Cunningham) who are meeting the needs of our communities, and highlighted Byron Cage and Vashawn Mitchell’s personal “Why” they support the American Heart Association and our communities.

The health and wellness expo featured exhibitors, including BMO Harris Bank (Financial Literacy), Chicago State University (BP screenings), Illinois Heart Rescue (CPR education), Essie Maries (Healthy Food Sampling), 360 MBS (Exercise Demonstration), You’re the cure (healthy food financing petition), pedometer walking challenge and so much more. And lastly, The Most Powerful Voices Gospel Concert was packed with highlights throughout the evening including a stroke presentation from Dr. Doriane Miller, Redia’s social determinants of health video, and performances from Byron Cage and Vashawn Mitchell. But, the performance that captivated hearts and inspired everyone to live their healthiest life was: Hot Chocolate Gift of Hope (l-r) Dawn Funches (Heart Recipient), Monica Fox (Kidney Recipient), Harry Morris Poetry Spoken Word piece titled (Kidney Recipient), Angelique Marseille (Liver Recipient) “A message.”

12 VOICES

#OnBlackWomen: Advocate, Adversary, Or Both?

Lauran Smith By Lauran Smith 12 Voices I’ve been thinking a lot about Black women’s relationships lately. I believe this concept has taken such a high position in my mind because of the episode of “Scandal” where we see “Olivia Pope” (Kerry Washington) and “Annalise Keating” (Viola Davis) pairing up to handle a relatively large and impactful case. Ms. Pope was re-

ferred to Ms. Keating as someone who would be able to make things happen/get things done (Season Seven, Episode Twelve. Even if you were not a “Scandal” fan, this is a great episode to watch relative to Black women and our relationships with one another). To make a long story short, Pope made continuous “digs” at Keating’s past indiscretions, in an effort to make herself look blemish-free (if you follow the series, we ALL know that this is far from the truth). Keating fired back in response to Pope’s slick jabs; the two ended up hashing out these differences. After hitting each other below the belt several times, both worked to secure a resolution to the case together. My question is: Why do we as Black women have to “try each other”/throw slick jabs when there is no one walking the face of this earth who has a blemish-free situation? This isn’t to say that ALL Black women exhibit this type of behavior, but it happens more often than not. EXAMPLE: We are

in a professional or casual networking setting; we see a “sistah” across the room who is mingling/ shaking hands/hugging those in attendance—it almost instantly makes some women feel a “who does she think she is” type of way in their spirit. Some might even “mean-mug” the seemingly nice woman; some may find a way to say something negative about her or her appearance; some may ignore her totally...but WHY? Why not get to know a smiling face to see if the two of you mesh? Why can’t we come INTO a situation with optimism, instead of thinking that the next sistah is “competition”? What I have learned, in this ever-growing “let’s have all kinds of socials with cute themes” day and age is this: there is a wide variety of powerful yet quiet storms (in the form of Black women) in Chicago. Some of these women have so much pull that they may attend these events just to meet up with women and “catch a vibe,” seeing who they can pull to the top right

along with them...and just because you haven’t heard of them, doesn’t mean that they haven’t heard of you. No one is saying to kiss anyone’s “hind part” (lol), but it never hurts to be nice; you never know how far a pleasantry can actually take you OR your career. If you are interested in growing, it’s essential that you are able to get along with your female counterparts. Realizing that we all have flaws, yet making an effort not to judge someone FOR their flaws, is just ONE way that winners think. In that “Scandal” episode, Olivia Pope is a very powerful woman with a very questionable past...but her record of handling business is impeccable. Annalise Keating is also a very powerful woman with a very questionable past...but there is no denying her brilliant mind, and the way she is able to finesse a situation. The two of them coming together to fight on behalf of thousands of people made PERFECT sense! But they had to get beyond the “petty” to get to the ultimate “purpose.” What I liked about this episode is that Annalise

White People, Really?

Carl West By Carl West 12 Voices I know just as Black folks are tripping on White people and their “privileged existence,” White people are tripping on the narrative of “Black-on-Black crime” and the so-called “immigration debate” concerning undocumented immigrants. I’ve lived in this country all my nearly 50 years, and it never amazes me to hear some of the crazy and outlandish stuff that comes out of (some) White people’s mouths as they attempt to justify ALL of their actions over the centuries. It comes from talking heads on cable TV and/or radio. And it comes from police departments and their standard press stateTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

ments to explain why one of their bigoted officers smoked an unarmed Black teenager. What is amazingly unfortunate is that a portion of White folks don’t like to hear criticism about White folks. How do I know this statement to be true? Simple: I know my subscribers/readers. Whenever I make disheartening accusations or complaints about the White community, I see White readers unsubscribing. What’s interesting is that they enjoy letting me know personally that they no longer wanna receive the news service. My response is normally, “just go to the bottom of the news service and click unsubscribe, simple!” I’m never surprised. If anything, I’m dismayed that White people will miss great editorials that may be of some use to them. I also get Black readers who’ll unsubscribe if I say something about their associate, friend, family, or foe. How immature on both White and Black sides. I love all humanity and I truly wanna see mankind embrace each other and live in harmony, even if it’s separately. See, I have no problem with segregated ‘hoods.

Why is this country still so accidentally bigoted? Yes, I say “accidentally” because I don’t think that most White people wanna be known as prejudice. But their nature and upbringing have been narrated by media distortion and false propaganda. People should have the right to live where they desire and in the company of whomever they decide. Let’s be honest, most people enjoy living among people who share their common social/racial background. That’s completely fair. My only issue is don’t judge others or use your perceived power or advantage to discriminate against (Blacks/Hispanics) because of our social/racial differences. God created (US) in His likeness and that was not to mean color. I think His likeness means we were born with the ability to think rationally and to www.chicagodefender.com

love openly and freely. What I’ve seen over the last few weeks has disturbed me terribly. First, the Starbucks incident, which was clearly racial. The Black ladies being removed by (White) law enforcement from a golf course in which they were members. Then the dude who shot up the Waffle House. That was a hate crime but select White people have refused to call it that. They would rather call the young man’s murderous action a case of mental illness, along with the White dude who used his van as a killing machine. This nut bag actually had a weapon when they apprehended him. He pointed the gun and literally begged for the cops to kill him. Of course, they didn’t. This is a blatant example of White people with advantages/power scripting their own narrative to protect whiteness. How many times have we heard law enforcement or network news talking heads describe an illiterate, lost and confused Black teen as mentally challenged? NOPE! Before we can even know his name and motive (we usually only know that he’s Black), he’s eagerly described as a ‘hood

never came into this situation with a judgmental attitude. She wanted to get to work. The only way we knew that she had done her homework on Olivia is because she had to stand her ground in the salon. And although Olivia was nit-picky and judgmental, I liked that she took this route because she was QUICKLY reminded that she isn’t the only one with a haunting past. Once she was brought back down off of her high horse, she grasped that Annalise was all about getting the job done. Nothing more, nothing less. Sometimes, we as sistahs may have to “check” our sistah in a way that only she can understand, but also in an effort to help her get to that next level. The two of them were able to move beyond their issues to work together, only intensifying their power as Black women. Can you imagine how far we could all get if we recognized the power/ light in the other person, instead of trying to dim that light to make ourselves look brighter? Something to think about...

terrorist, thug, and gangbanger. In these cases, what’s also unfortunate is that even some (“unwoke”) Blacks will label him in the same vane. White folks, really? What in the hell is going on? Why is this country still so accidentally bigoted? Yes, I say “accidentally” because I don’t think that most White people wanna be known as prejudice. But their nature and upbringing have been narrated by media distortion and false propaganda. It has been easy for Whites to follow that script than to look, listen and learn from Black people at either their jobs, together on sports leagues, or on the battlefield during times of unwanted wars. These are places where Whites and Blacks have joined hand in hand. These are the real images of Black life. I wish I had the “magic stick” that hip-hop artist and businessman 50 Cent rapped about. I would wave it and make bigotry disappear. You know, if a genie in a bottle gave me one freakin’ wish, I would not ask for massive wealth. I would wish to eradicate racism. (We) can then all make an abundance of money working together! Carl D. Let’s Eat: Majani Vegan Restaurant By The Black Foodies In 2018, people are generally becoming more and more health conscious. According to onegreenplanet.org, six percent of Americans now identify as vegan, compared to one percent in 2014. W h i l e The Black Foodies t h e s e numbers are trending rapidly toward Americans gravitating to a strictly plantbased diet, some individuals will never switch over. There is an unfortunate perception that healthy eating doesn’t always equate to flavorful, tasty food; but, Tsadakeeyah and Nasya Emmanuel, husband and wife and owners of Majani – a vegan restaurant serving soulful vegan cuisine – are working diligently toward changing this narrative. Majani is located at 7167 Exchange Avenue in the South Shore Neighborhood of Chicago. When we arrived at Majani (majani means “green” in Swahili), we noticed the delightful aromas wafting from the kitchen area. After a pleasant greeting from our server, we were promptly seated, and it was suggested that we have the BBQ Cauliflower as an appetizer. When the dish arrived, it resembled a heaping pile of chicken nuggets. The cauliflower was fried to a golden brown and coated with a house-made BBQ sauce. This dish was nothing short of amazing. The texture of the cauliflower was on point – not mushy – with just enough of a bite to let us know that the cauliflower was fresh, not frozen. The BBQ sauce, a sticky and sweet heat, added a smoky component. Everything combined to create an atomic explosion of flavor. We would order this BBQ Cauliflower again, in a heartbeat. This dish is soy and gluten free. We also sampled the Black Eye Pea Fritters appetizer, which is also soy and gluten free. These fritters are equivalent to the Middle Eastern falafel. Instead of using ground chickpeas, Majani uses ground black eyed peas, forming the mixture into balls and then deep-frying. They are served with your choice of dipping sauce— plum habanero, mango habanero, or BBQ. The fritters were super tasty – crunchy on the outside while creamy and smooth on the inside, providing a contrast in texture that made these fritters a delight to devour. gyro strips and piled high on a pita, along with lettuce, tomato, onion and a house-made tzatziki sauce. The sandwich was too big to just fold, pick up and bite, so we used a knife and fork to attack this whopping creation. We could not stop eating Majani’s rendition of this classic Greek sandwich. The pita was fresh and the veggies tasted like they were just picked – garden to plate. The tzatziki sauce was classic, while the vegan gyro strips were seasoned in a fashion that offered a lamb-like quality. This vegan gyro, while not tasting exactly like a traditional gyro, was very good. When you go to Majani, be sure to give it a try. It will not disappoint. We certainly enjoyed it. For dessert, we shared a slice of carrot cake. The consistency in this carrot cake, which contains no eggs or dairy, was quite impressive. It wasn’t too sweet, there was no carrot overload, and the walnuts and raisins added the perfect texture contrast. This was Tsadakeeyah Emmanuel a very well-executed carrot cake. Miss Coretta couldn’t let it go. Majani endeavors to create healthy opportunities for its patrons, without sacrificing taste while doing so, and their mission has definitely been accomplished. The dishes are fun, fresh and innovative, with second-to-none service. We also suggest trying the Crab Cake Sandwich, the Lentil Mushroom Burger and the Fried Grits. Make your way down to Majani and enjoy a soulful vegan twist on some of your favorite dishes. We rank restaurants based on the number of kisses (one through five, five being the best). Majani receives 4½ kisses. Logan Browning Gets Candid About the Series “Dear White People” By Allison Kugel Defender Guest Writer Her beauty is luminescent, her conviction fierce. It’s a potent combination and why actress Logan Browning’s portrayal of student activist Sam White in the Netflix hit series “Dear White People” has struck a chord with audiences. The series, based off the 2014 movie of the same name, also created by Justin Simien, seems custom-made to address the uproarious intersection where President Donald Trump’s politics and Black Lives Matter collide. More importantly, beyond its pop culture relevance, is the show’s ability to humanize a people and their collective point-of-view to a larger population of viewers. Logan plays biracial Ivy League university student, Sam White, host of a popular, albeit controversial, campus radio show titled, “Dear White People.” Her character’s radio show within a television show is a platform for Sam’s grievances, her bottomless questions, and the racial and cultural issues that continue to surface on ethnically diverse college campuses around the world. It also serves as the show’s anchor point, introducing each episode’s message and plotline. And if you think the first season was binge-worthy, you haven’t seen anything yet! As Logan and I discuss the second season of “Dear White People,” streaming May 4th on Netflix, we segue from her thoughts on acting and developing the character of Sam to social and political activism, the emotional triggers behind race and color, and some of the most pressing issues that our younger generations face in the age of social media and our relentless news cycle. It becomes clear to me half way through our conversation that actress Logan Browning shares the values and concerns of her television alter ego, Sam White, but with a graceful confidence and ease of spirit that continues to elude Sam in the show’s second season. Allison Kugel: Typically, when I’m researching an actor, there’s a clear distinction between them and their character. 12 May 2 - 8, 2018

With you, the unique challenge I faced is that I couldn’t clearly discern where your character, Sam White, ends and you begin. Logan Browning: That’s an interesting observation. During season one, I was much further away from who Sam is. A lot of my portrayal of Sam was coming from a place of discovery and nervousness at taking on this role that Tessa Thompson originally played (in the 2014 movie, “Dear White People”). In season two, part of me becoming comfortable with Sam was to stop fighting the parts of her that I thought were so different from me, when really they’re not. There are similarities between the two of us. With most characters I’ve played, I find myself pushing back on any similarities because I don’t want people to think I’m not playing a character. I find joy in bringing someone to life who’s very different from me. But part of why I ended up getting the role of Sam is because I do fall into who she is very easily. Though her perspective on life is different from mine. Allison Kugel: How so? Logan Browning: In terms of how she responds to the world, and some of her reasoning within her debates. I do believe that the longer you play a character, they naturally bleed into your real life. I’m not surprised that some of who Sam is may show up in who I am. I find myself saying some of the same quips that she does in my responses to things. I also find myself using what she says, like,

“This has to be right, because Sam said it!” Allison Kugel: Has she brought out the activist in you? Logan Browning: It’s made me more comfortable in being an activist. I’ve always been drawn to giving a voice and a face to people who aren’t seen or heard. I feel like that’s a part of what comes with being an entertainer and being in the public eye. When people say that actors and musicians shouldn’t be policy adjacent, I think that perspective is ridiculous. They’re put in this position where they are in the public eye and people listen, so it makes sense that these two things go hand in hand. Because people are looking to my character, Sam, for that, they naturally look to me. It would be a huge disappointment to people if they saw that I was not speaking out on certain issues. Allison Kugel: Do you feel compelled to speak out because of the weight Dear White People holds with its audience? Logan Browning: If you scroll through my Twitter, I’ve been vocal all the way back. You can even dig up my MySpace (laughs), way before this show, and you’ll see! I watched the film, “Dear White People” (2014), when it came out. I saw myself in Sam when I watched the film. Did seeing the character of Sam in the film influence me? Maybe it did. Playing Sam only aides in this burning desire I have to speak out. But I don’t feel compelled by it. Allison Kugel: You feel empowered by it… Logan Browning: Yeah, I feel empowered by it, and I feel that being on a show like “Dear White People” makes me want to use my voice. I’m inspired by the people I’m surrounded by. I’m surrounded by so many young, influential artists who have great talent and great passion, and a desire to leave a mark that goes beyond their artistry. It’s a new kind of energy in comparison to when I first started acting at the age of fourteen. Allison Kugel: What are some of the hot topics you guys discuss on set when you’re all off camera? Logan Browning: On set, honwww.chicagodefender.com

Logan Browning estly? We goof off. If you’re a person who knows what it’s like to live a life of trauma or a life of less than and difficult, then you know that the best therapy is laughter. And that’s what we do, we laugh a lot. It’s a part of our culture. Black people together just have a good time. When you get Black people together, they don’t want to have a depressing time. Yes, heavy conversations can happen, and they do happen a lot. Sometimes they’ll happen in our group texts or once an issue comes up. More serious conversations will happen when people ask us about the show and we talk about those topics with other people. I may read something that one of my castmates said in an interview, and then I’ll talk to them about it and say, “Hey, I didn’t know you were affected in that way. Tell me about it…” Allison Kugel: Can you give me an example of an issue that’s come up? Logan Browning: I’ve always felt I understood and was aware of my privilege as a light-skinned person in this world, and in my industry. I was always aware of it, but I’ve realized that I was still missing the mark until I started to see some of what my fellow actors have said in interviews. I’ve realized that there’s a larger part of their experience than I was understanding. I want to make sure I’m not just being an ally to the Black community, but also addressing

these more specific issues that are even more nuanced than I’ve personally experienced. Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about the nuance of color within the Black community. Being that you are light-skinned and with green eyes, has there ever been a time in your life when you wished to have darker skin and dark eyes to fit in socially? Were there ever social consequences associated with your appearance? Logan Browning: I’ve been grateful to have the parents that I had growing up, and I’ve never had any kind of self-loathing in terms of wishing to be something else. But I definitely grew up in a place where I wished people treated me the way I wanted them to. If they were treating me like I didn’t fit in, then I just wished to be treated differently, but I never wished I looked different. Allison Kugel: Were you treated as something “other”? Logan Browning: In both ways, I was. I’m on a spectrum. From White people I was treated a certain way, sometimes good and sometimes bad. Same for the African American community. I was accepted sometimes, and sometimes I wasn’t. It’s a spectrum that I exist on. It’s part of my experience, just kind of being stuck in the middle. As you get older it changes from wishing they would treat you differently to just trying continued on page 13

to understand them, and not worrying as much about fitting in. You realize the reason you’re not fitting in is because you have a privilege that they don’t have. You have to understand their experience. Allison Kugel: Your character Sam has mixed emotions about having a Caucasian father, and yet, she falls for a White guy on campus who has a similar energy to her father. She has mixed emotions towards both of those men in her life, and it’s an interesting parallel. Logan Browning: Absolutely. She feels so comfortable with Gabe because he reminds her of what she has been around her whole life. She’s been around a White male energy her whole life. In the same breath, she’s also been around African American male energy because of her mom and her mom’s family. Sam does feel that pull towards Gabe, possibly because of her dad. Yet, because she has also been exposed to the strength of a Black man, she wants to be around that as well. It’s difficult for her to try to navigate that. Deeper than what Sam’s dad looks like, if you look at the characters of both Reggie and Gabe (both love interests), they both have an intelligence that is mirrored in her dad. The reason she leans more towards Gabe than Reggie is because Gabe challenges her like her dad challenged her. Allison Kugel: What are your personal rules about dating your co-stars? Yay or nay? Logan Browning: Naaayyy (laughs)! Number one, I’m more attracted to the opposite of myself. I’m attracted to more of an engineering mind. When you’re on a set, you’re falling for someone else’s character sometimes. I think [actors] forget that you’re in hair and makeup all day and you’re

seeing people in their most glorified state, so it’s very easy to fall in love with anyone you’re around. I would never. Allison Kugel: After the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, some of the more outspoken students commented that the news media did not cover the diversity that exists at Stoneman Douglas High School. They focused their cameras on White students and White parents. What are your thoughts about this obvious exclusion? Logan Browning: Every single act of gun violence is absolutely terrible, but it’s just so interesting that these young people’s voices are finally being heard now. It’s like, really? Now? In 2018? I’m not bitter at all about the fact that this movement is happening now because any kind of talk is good, and any type of move towards prog-

ress I’m on board with. But it is one of those obvious things where images that are more palatable are the things that people want to talk about. I think that’s why a show like “Dear White People” is so important. It puts these colored faces on the screen and forces the audience to begin to relate to these characters who possibly don’t look like them. Allison Kugel: What do you hope “Dear White People” does for 18- to 21-year-olds who are watching you from their college dorm rooms? Logan Browning: I hope that the show is comforting for that specific age group. I hope that it’s a love letter for them, so that they feel like their voices are heard and time-capsuled and represented. We’re not re-inventing the wheel. These kids already exist on college campuses, and they are being super active in terms of being activists. I hope they feel seen and it further encourages them to do the great work that they already plan to do. I really hope and pray that older people will watch as well so they can understand what 18- to 21-year-olds are experiencing, and what their world is now. It’s reminiscent of what their world might have been when they were younger, when the civil rights movement was happening. Allison Kugel: This new generation is experiencing everything on steroids because of our 24-hour news cycle. I think that is something the older generation needs to fully understand, if they don’t already. Logan Browning: We all are experiencing so much trauma and it’s not being addressed in terms of our mental health, especially kids. When I was in middle school, www.chicagodefender.com

I would learn about what was going on if I came home and my parents happened to have the news on, or maybe if they were talking about it at school. But I didn’t have a device that was constantly telling me about every shitty thing happening in the world, 24/7. Allison Kugel: Why do you think Black men in our society are both feared and fetishized, simultaneously? This is a dynamic that’s depicted on your show, “Dear White People.” Logan Browning: Slavery. That sounds like something Sam would say, but it’s our history. You take any people out of their homeland and you make them a hot commodity… you’re selling them up on how strong they are, how big they are, how hard they work. America created this. They created that dichotomy of what they imagine a Black man to be.

Allison Kugel: What storyline are you most excited for audiences to see in the second season? Logan Browning: Oh man, in a general sense, I love all of the characters’ stories and all of the individual storylines because you are really getting to know these people. I do love Coco’s storyline. I think it’s a great conversation starter. Every episode in the second season is a conversation starter, which is more what I look forward to than any one storyline. I just know I’m excited about the issues that are covered this season. Allison Kugel: Finish this sentence: “Dear White People…” Logan Browning: It’s so funny, the other day Justin [Simien, Creator of Dear White People] said, “Dear White People, You’re Welcome.” (Laughs). I think it’s “Dear White People… whiteness, blackness; all of it is a creation. It’s a human device that we’ve created, and one that White people in history created and it’s malarkey.” It’s a factory now, one that we all have to mill about in, but it’s a complete fabrication. We have different experiences, yes, but we are all the same. In order to get to the point where we all see each other as the same, we would have to first go back and dissect every life experience we’ve each had before we can wipe the slate clean and say, “Yup. We’re all the same. Back to square one.” Whiteness and blackness are malarkey, but to get to that place we would have to better understand each other. Season two of “Dear White People” premieres May 4th on Netflix. City.Life.Style The Icing on the Cake: Play Reveals a Bittersweet Twist By Rick and Brenda McCain Let’s Play There’s a phrase called “the icing on the cake,” which means something that makes a good situation even better. You would like to believe that bringing someone you love home to a special friend, someone like family, and telling them that they are about to get married is the “icing on the cake!” Oooh, how quickly Brenda and Rick that sweet tasting icMcCain ing gets a bitter taste when you find out that there are two brides instead of one. The challenge of ones deeply-held beliefs is front and center in playwright Bekah Brunstetter’s play, “The Cake!” Finding common ground of mutual respect and compassion with someone who has an opposing viewpoint collides in the batter of truths in a little bakery called Della’s. Faith, family, and frosting are about to get stirred up when Jen (Tuckie White) leaves New York and returns to her small North Carolina hometown where she

Rivendell Theatre Presents The Premiere of The Cake By Bekah Brunstetter Directed by Lauren Shouse April 8 - May 20, 2018 would like to get married to her partner Macy (Krystel McNeil). Jen visits her late mother’s best friend Della (Tara Mallen) to do the honors of making her dream wedding cake at her bakery. Della’s cakes are well-known, earning her a spot as a contestant on the “Great American Baking Show.” Della’s heart is filled with excitement and joy until she discovers that Jen is not marrying a man. Della is forced to re-examine her beliefs and her marriage to Tim (Keith Kupferer). She realizes that choices have to be made to whom one chooses to love in this world, and without backing down on her strong religious belief, she tries to steer Jen in what is right and biblical regarding marriage. Also, standing up for what she believes in is Jen’s fiancé, Macy. She feels that Della’s truth is made up by conservative old White men. Director Lauren Shouse staged a play that was written for understanding by

Krystel McNeil (Macy) Brunstetter to see if there was another option, an option to try to make awareness on the views of gay marriages. Although Della is a Christian and she is filled with love, sweetness, sunshine, and lots of sugar, she has to come to terms with the inner conflict about supporting Jen’s decision or staying true to her beliefs. As the characters continue to unfold within the play, you can see the gradual change of Della opening her heart and mind more to seek understanding without losing her faith as she gets to know Jen and Macy’s love towards one another. “The Cake” is a play that is a stepping stone about trying to bridge the gap of differences with a little empathy for how we define love. How we can come out of our secluded worlds and accept change and see one another, even if it is sitting 14 May 2 - 8, 2018

down and having a piece a cake together, to break down some of the walls of polar opposite views. As a minister (Rick McCain) and I always review plays without entering our biblical views and religious opinions, however, I find myself troubled and offended when plays attack Christianity and its beliefs. Regarding the “The Cake,” I only asked that we work to be on common ground and come together regarding our differences without attacking each other. “Let’s Play” somewhat recommends this play at Rivendell. Motown Legend Lamont Dozier and Son Collaborate on Children’s Play

Dozier’s son, Paris Ray, and playwright Cheryl L. West watch rehearsals for production at Chicago’s Children’s Theater, The Station.

Motown legend Lamont Dozier and his son created music for “Last Stop on Market Street.” By Marshelle Sanders Defender Contributing Writer When you listen to songs such as “Heat Wave” by Martha and the Vandellas, “Stop, In the Name of Love!” by The Supremes, “Baby I Need Your Loving” by The Four Tops, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” by Marvin Gaye and many more, then you are listening to songs that Lamont Dozier has written and produced. Legendary Lamont Dozier is one-third of the songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland from the significant 1960s Motown “Hitsville U.S.A.” era in America’s music history. The latest chapter in Dozier’s legendary career is the musical “Last Stop on Market Street.” Dozier and his son, Paris Ray Dozier, wrote and produced the music together for the show at Chicago’s Children’s Theatre – where it opened last week, ready to début to the world. Countless kids, parents, and teachers know and love Matt de la Peña’s warm-hearted story about 7-year-old CJ and his wise Nana who taught him to find beauty on a Sunday afternoon bus ride through the city. Nationally acclaimed playwright Cheryl L. West (Chicago native) has adapted Peña’s multiple award-winning book for the stage, a co-commission and rolling world premiere with Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis that is already attracting national attention. Young CJ is staying with his grandmother—stripped of his smart phone or tablet “because Nana says so”— in a world considerably different from the one he’s used to. Dragged on an urban bus ride that’s loud, gritty and weird, guided by his veritable force of na16 May 2 - 8, 2018

Last Stop on Market Street runs April 24-May 27 at Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Station, 100 S. Racine Avenue in Chicago’s West Loop. Show times are Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. “Last Stop on Market Street” is recommended for ages 6 and up. Single tickets are $35 including fees. For subscriptions, single tickets and information on group rates, visit chicagochildrenstheatre. org or call Chicago Children’s Theatre Guest Services at (312) 374-8835. ture, Nana, CJ travels a little closer to his roots and learns that things are not always what they have been, and people are not always who they may seem. Leading the Chicago Children’s Theatre’s cast as Nana is the indefatigable E. Faye Butler, a Chicago musical theater legend who has performed around the globe to international acclaim. Alejandro Medina, an 11-year old actor from Oak Park, and Kei Rawlins, 10, from Chicago’s River North neighborhood, will rotate in the role of CJ. “The Last Stop” cast also features Melanie Brezill, Jesse Bhamrah, Brian Keys, Kirra Silver and Breon Arzell. West said she hopes the production challenges stereotypes and gets people to think before making assumptions. “When kids walk out [of play] they will see people and [think] maybe this guy is not going to steal my watch, maybe this guy volunteers at the zoo...we tend to just look at the surface and identify and say that’s bad. This is what this is about, that different

doesn’t mean bad and that’s what I want the kids to come out with.” This is not the first score Dozier and his son have written at CCT. The duo wrote the music in Chicago Children’s Theatre 2014 smash hit “Mr. Chickee’s Funny Money.” This time around the pair wanted to make sure to incorporate hiphop, funk, and modern-day style. Dozier states, “Paris and I sat down initially and mapped out a plan about getting the right songs and the right feeling to make sure the songs connect with the book and make sure that the book in the music connects because of the sensitive issues that you want to bring out and show the kids the little things that we overlook or that they overlooked.” Dozier was amazed at how the children reacted to the music and how well they paid attention to the storyline as well. “They notice that his (CJ) stuff was taken away from him and it means something. All the stuff that we have today is being overrun by technology; it’s great, but they are losing some other perspectives and things that they should work out. I think that these kids are beginning to pick up, because of shows like that, why they should put technologies down and start reading more and getting involved with just what’s going on around them... seeing the homeless and seeing a different thing that they may have taken for granted or they ignored. It means a lot to growing minds..” Paris Ray also gives details on how he and his father came together with starting the process of matching the songs with the themes and characters of the play. “What was integral for us was www.chicagodefender.com

The cast of “Last Stop on Market Street” brainstorming and sound boarding; we really did put a lot of empathies on each of the characters individually and then we kind of musically searched how to represent them tonally through certain chord progressions and the actual vibe of each song. We wanted to make sure there was no question about the feeling that we’re trying to capture in the minds of the cast.” Not only does the play “Last Stop on Market Street” bridge the gap between the older generation and younger generation, it is also paradoxical for father and son, especially within the music business. “It’s interesting because hip hop is really the child of everything that my father did. Hip hop is largely derived from samples and who are we sampling? It’s really all in the family and it’s hereditary so it’s the sweet irony of the whole process. We’re really going off the coattails and walking along a path that was already initially carved out by my dad’s generation. The biggest distinction between his generation and ours especially currently is that...they just had more chops than us. He came off the block in

the fifties and there were doo wop groups everywhere; where as of now, we have our melodies and our autotune and our technological interventions.,” said Paris. From young to old, “Last Stop on Market Street” is a family must-see show with vibrant songs composed and produced by Lamont Dozier and Paris Ray, such as “Serving up Love” and “Whatcha Looking At.” The music will have you on your feet, make you move out your seat to the beat. The production also has a compelling message on how to see the world in a different perspective dealing with the generation gap, poverty, disabilities and culture. In keeping with the themes of “Last Stop on Market Street,” Chicago Children’s Theatre’s The Station will be a public drop-off location for canned and other non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Families and school groups are encouraged to bring canned and other non-perishable foods to The Station when they attend the show. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

City.Life.Style JJ Hairston and Deitrick Haddon Prepare for the 12th Annual McDonald’s 2018 Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer McDonald’s is serving up more than food to communities across the world. They’ve committed to deals on food service and to helping others with programs such as the Ronald McDonald House Charities, The McDonald’s HACER Scholarship, 365Black, My InspirAsian, and McDonald’s International. McDonald’s is now returning with one of its essential events and is bringing highly acclaimed gospel artists Deitrick Haddon and JJ Hairston with them on the 12th Annual Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour. This is the longest-running, brand-owned gospel tour of its kind with an award-winning talent lineup sure to please fans nationwide. McDonald’s Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour is an extension of the brand’s 365Black platform, an initiative that celebrates the pride, heritage and achievements of African-Americans year-round. This year’s lineup of award-winning talent includes Deitrick Haddon, JJ Hairston, Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard, LéAndria Johnson, Todd Dulaney and Canton Jones. As with previous years, the tour will celebrate McDonald’s continued devotion to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). At each stop, the national tour will raise a love offering to support families served by the charity. In just the last five years, the love offering has raised nearly $800,000 to aid in helping families stay close when their children are ill. The charity raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars in 2017 alone. As a new part of the tour, McDonald’s will award one HBCU college student with a $10,000 Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarship at a select tour stop during the Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour. This is one of five scholarships McDonald’s is sponsoring throughout the year. To show love to McDonald’s and give back to Chicago Families in advance, Hairston and Haddon came to Chicago this past month for a day to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House near the Lurie Children’s Hospital. Haddon and Hairston interacted with guests and helped serve meals to the families. They prayed for families, talked to them about personal matters and also learned about the Ronald McDonald House and why THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

JJ Hairston it’s established. RMHC is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) corporation that creates, finds, and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. The work is carried out through its global network of nearly 290 chapters in more than 64 countries and regions, and its three core programs: the Ronald McDonald House, the Ronald McDonald Family Room and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. Haddon said he learned a lot during his visit. “There is a very spiritual point about this Ronald McDonald’s House; I know it’s not a church or whatever but they’re doing something special to relieve the pressure from families who are going through a tough season and having to deal with hospitalizing their children and having to spend money while they’re going through that. For the Ronald McDonald House to relieve that pressure and some of that cost for families, that is amazing and that is the way of God, that’s God’s love.”

Hairston was also grateful to be a part of something meaningful. “I really respect this and I wanted to be a part of something where you can come out to worship and praise (the tour) but also give back to the community; that’s what the Ronald McDonald House does; that’s what the McDonald’s inspirational Gospel Tour does and I’m excited to be a part of it.” This is Haddon’s first time on the Gospel Tour. In addition to his gospel performances, he was one of the cast members in Oxygen’s 2013 reality television show, “Preachers of L.A.” Drawing on a range of music that extends from classic soul to hip-hop, he is best known for developing gospel and modern-day styles of music. Haddon has made a point of using his music as a ministry to reach all people. “The community has really held me down for years, Chicago, Detroit, all the cities in the U.S., they have really held me down. While singing gospel music, God has really blessed me to do some great www.chicagodefender.com

Deitrick Haddon things... so it’s important for me to give back anyway that I can; it’s an honor for me.” Haddon also has a Chicago Choir “League Of Xtraodinary Worshippers.” Haddon states, “It’s a group of young people who love Chi-town. Please request them for any events, it’s free, they will come out and they’re all about showing the young people that you can direct your energy in a positive direction like singing.” He encourages families and everyone in general on how to stay strong during tough seasons. “Anybody having difficulties right now, that trouble won’t last always; seasons must change, seasons were made to change; it’s impossible for you to stay in the same season forever so your job is to make sure you don’t give up,” shared Haddon. This is also Hairston’s first time on the Gospel Tour. He is the leader, chief songwriter, and director of the Youthful Praise choir, known for its exuberant, urban-tinged gospel and praise and worship

songs. Youthful Praise has delivered hit singles like “Incredible God, Incredible Praise” and “You Deserve It.” “I’m hoping that our music will keep people encouraged and keep people full of hope and faith and fearlessness because we don’t want you to be worried or consumed by fear; even in the midst of the threats of war, you know our God is going to take care of us so that’s what I want people to feel when they hear our music,” said Hairston. This free concert will kick off in Chicago on Thursday, May 17, at Chicago State University in The Jones Convocation Center. Haddon stated that he is not only celebrating the love of Christ and people on May 17, but also his birthday. “If you want to bring gifts, I wear a size 9 ½ and medium jackets, whatever y’all, get me something (laughs).” Tickets are free and available right now on the McDonalds.com website under the community and 365black category. To patrons of Commonwealth Edison Company: Commonwealth Edison Company (“ComEd”) hereby gives notice to the public that on April 16, 2018, it filed with the Illinois Commerce Commission (“ICC” or “Commission”) its annual formula rate update, including updated cost inputs, reconciliations of ComEd’s approved revenue requirement and return on equity, and supporting testimony and other information, all for the purpose of determining, pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Illinois Public Utilities Act (the “Act”), updated rates for delivery services applicable throughout ComEd’s service territory in northern Illinois to be applicable beginning with the first monthly billing period of 2019. As provided in Section 16-108.5 of the Act, the updated costs are based on final historical cost data for calendar year 2017 reflected in ComEd’s most recently filed annual FERC Form 1, plus projected plant additions for calendar year 2018, as well as the associated adjustments to accumulated depreciation (change in depreciation reserve), depreciation expense, and accumulated deferred income taxes. In addition, ComEd’s 2017 actual costs, which are now known, are reconciled with the corresponding costs that had been used as part of the prior formula rate update filing. Those updated costs, other inputs and reconciliations, collectively result in a distribution revenue requirement on which new delivery services rates are to be based (referred to in the filing as the “2019 Rate Year Net Revenue Requirement”) of $2,697,978,000. This is a decrease of $22,906,000 from the revenue requirement approved by the ICC in last year’s formula update, ICC Docket Number 17-0196. For residential customers receiving bundled fixed price electric service from ComEd, the delivery services charges are only a portion of the total bill. The remaining portion includes the cost of the electricity supply and other services, which are subject to the procurement process established by Section 1-75 of the Illinois Power Agency Act and the provisions of Section 16-111.5 of the Public Utilities Act and/or to regulation by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Using rates applicable with the January 2018 billing period for such other components, the estimated total bill impacts of changes in the delivery component are provided herein. Increases are denoted by a + sign and decreases are denoted by a – sign. For such customers, the delivery portion of electric bills represents approximately 42% of the total electric bill, on average, while the supply portion accounts for about 42%, the transmission portion accounts for approximately 10% and other charges such as taxes account for the remaining 6%. Using these electricity supply and other charges, the updated rates for the delivery portion result in an overall change in the total residential bills, on average, of approximately -$0.50 per month or an estimated -0.6%. Total bill impacts for residential customers vary by delivery class and electric usage. For example, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 330 kilowatt-hours (“kWhs”) per month, is -$0.78 per month or -1.6%. Likewise, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single-family residential customers without electric space heat utilizing on average 723 kWhs per month, is -$0.33 per month or -0.3%. Furthermore, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for multi-family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 794 kWhs per month, is +$0.27 per month or +0.3%. Additionally, the estimated total bill impact, on average, for single family residential customers with electric space heat, utilizing on average 1,652 kWhs per month, is -$0.76 or -0.4%. ComEd does not estimate total bill impacts for residential customers supplied by Retail Electric Suppliers. The updated delivery service rates for nonresidential customers in the Watt-Hour and Small Load delivery classes (100 kilowatts (“kW”) or less of demand), with varying usages result in an overall average percentage change in the total bill of -7.0% and -2.5%, respectively. Nonresidential customers with larger electric loads (greater than 100 kW) have a wide range of electric load characteristics in addition to electricity supply costs that cannot be reasonably estimated; therefore, the overall effect of the updated delivery service rates on an electric bill for such customers cannot be determined. The updated delivery service rates include ComEd’s updated costs of delivering electricity through its distribution system and apply to all ComEd customers independent of whether electricity supply is procured and provided by ComEd or by a third party (i.e., a Retail Electric Supplier). These updated rates will take effect beginning with the first day of the January 2019 monthly billing period. A copy of the materials filed with the Commission and supporting data and documents may be inspected by any interested party at ComEd’s office located at Three Lincoln Centre in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. In addition, Commonwealth Edison Company will place an electronic version of this Public Notice with estimated bill impacts on its Internet website www.ComEd.com. Customers are advised that the Commission may alter or amend the rates after hearings held pursuant to Section 16-108.5 of the Act and 83 Illinois Administrative Code Part 200, and may increase or decrease individual rates in amounts other than those requested by ComEd. All parties interested in this matter may obtain information with respect thereto either directly from ComEd or by addressing the Chief Clerk of the Illinois Commerce Commission, 527 East Capitol Avenue, Springfield, Illinois 62706. Free Smoke! Free Smoke! Cubs Stomp the Brewers With a 4-Game Sweep The North Siders are officially streaking after dominating the Brew-Crew (again) Sports by #TheBIGS Consistency you say? After struggling to find their footing through the first month of the season, a 5-game winning streak has put the Cubs right where they belong—atop the NL Central standings—as the they handed the Milwaukee Brewers all the free smoke they could handle pulling off a 4-game sweep. The rest of the division is officially on notice… the fun and games are over on the North Side! Checkout this week’s recap of all the action below! Game 2 Final Score - Cubs 3 MIL 2 The Cubs are coming off of a 1-0 win behind seven strong innings from Kyle Hendricks in game one of this four-game set. Hendricks retired 14 in a row at one point and he got a solo HR from #BamBam Kyle Schwarber to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. The Brewers got an unearned run in the first due to a Jason Heyward E9 (his first of the season) #RAKINGSEASON continued for Albert Almora Jr. and Javier Baez as they both extended their hitting streaks to 10 games after a leadoff double by Almora followed by an RBI single from Baez to make it a 1-1 tie. Anthony Rizzo brought Baez home on an RBI single to left to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. A Christian Yelich sac fly in the top of 7 scored Eric Sogard to tie the game at 2. Addison Russell led off the bottom of 7 with an infield hit and it proved to be the winning run. He scored on an E6 on Sogard with 2 outs on a Javier Baez ground ball to make it a 3-2

(Pictured is Cubs shortstop Addison Russell) The North Siders are officially streaking after dominating the Brew-Crew (again) John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals lead. Yu Darvish finally got past his dreaded 5th inning. He threw 104 pitches through six innings giving up one unearned run while striking out eight. “He (Joe Maddon) really takes care of me,” Darvish says. Game 3 Final Score - Cubs 3 MIL 0 The Cubs are coming off of a 3-2 victory. Pedro Strop got the win and Brandon Morrow got save number six of the year. Cubs INF/ OF Ben Zobrist was activated off of the 10-day DL and INF David

Bote was recalled to Triple A Iowa. Albert Almora Jr. singled & scored on a Javier Baez double (E6 in my book) in the 3rd inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. (The single and double extended both players’ career long hit streaks to 11 games.) Ben Zobrist and Jason Heyward scored on a Tommy LaStella single in the bottom of the 7th to extend the lead to 3-0. Jose Quintana had his best outing of the season. He threw 103 pitches, going 7 innings, giving up 2 hits and 0

runs while striking out 7. Game 4 Final Score - Cubs 2 MIL 0 The Cubs are on a three-game win streak coming off of a 3-0 win over the Brew Crew. Jose Quintana was lights out through 7 innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven Albert Almora Jr and Javier Baez look to extend their hit streaks to twelve games. Tyler Chatwood goes for his second win of the season. Addison Russell led off the

bottom of 5 with a triple to the right field corner. Tyler Chatwood helped himself with a single to score Addie to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Russell’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of 6 scored Anthony Rizzo to make it 2-0. Tyler Chatwood gets win number three on the season as he pitched 7 innings giving up 2 hits while striking out 4 on 90 pitches. An outstanding pitching/ defensive series for the Cubs and a 4-game win streak. That’s 7 out of 8 wins versus the Brewers this year.
