CITY NEWS Patricia Brown Holmes Elected May is Distracted As Firm’s First Managing Partner Driving Awareness The Partners of Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila LLP (RSHC) recently announced that partner Patricia Brown Holmes has been elected as the firm’s first managing partner. A former judge, experienced prosecutor, top-tier litigator, and nationally prominent advocate for law firm diversity, Holmes is the first Black woman (based on the firm’s knowledge) to both lead and have her name on the door of a major law firm that is not women- or minority-owned. Holmes was elected unanimously by the firm’s partners following organizational changes creating a more formal management structure for the rapidly growing firm. Previously, Holmes served as co-administrative partner of the firm, along with Ron Safer, but RSHC adopted a managing partner model to create a stronger structure to ensure superior service to clients and to accommodate the firm’s expansion. Since its establishment in early 2016 by 21 founding partners, RSHC has grown to 73 attorneys, including 37 partners, with offices in Chicago, San Fran-

Lori Lightfoot Resigns From Chicago Police Board; Many Say She Will Run for Mayor This week Lori Lightfoot resigned from her position as head of the Chicago Police Board, which prompted many to speculate that she will join the growing number of candidates running for Mayor of Chicago. Lightfoot was appointed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in June 2015 to head the Police Board. She was also appointed to lead the Police Accountability Task Force, which was created after the LaQuan McDonald police shooting video became public. Her resignation was effective immediately. In conjunction with Alvarez’s statement, authorities displayed a grainy blown-up image of what appeared to be Johnson wielding a gun as he ran towards the park. Alvarez said the enhanced video showed a firearm. In late 2017, Grant Fredericks disputed Alvarez’s claim that the video showed legitimate evidence of Johnson being armed. A Freedom Mother “For me, justice would be these cops–who are taking our kids away–being treated like we would be treated if we killed somebody. We wouldn’t get a paid vacation. We wouldn’t get a desk job. We would be taken away from our families. So, why are they not treated the same? If I cut myself, I bleed red. If they cut themselves, they bleed red.” The system has not given Holmes the justice she yearns for, and it may never will. However, Holmes is determined to continue breathing life into the name of Ronald “Ronnieman” Johnson through her community engagement and activism. Holmes founded the “Ronnieman Toy-Drive,” an annual event during the holiday season where Holmes enlists volunteers to serve their communities by bringing the Christmas spirit to CPS classrooms and handing out free toys to the youth. “What I have learned since I lost my son is that the struggle is real. But my life has changed a little bit. I’ve always said what was on my mind but I didn’t know so many people would fight with me. “ Dorothy Holmes her inspiration was her son. “Even though he was grown, he loved Christmas and loved getting his gifts,” says Holmes. “I remember when I revisited the park where he was killed. The kids in the park saw me and asked me what happened. I told them that my son was killed by police. One kid said, ‘It’s ok. He’s not your only son. I’ll be your son. Can I have a hug?’ That broke me. They asked me what will I do for my son. His birthday was December 14th, so I thought of a toy drive.” The “Ronnieman Toy-Drive” is nearing its fourth year. What began as an effort in the Washington Park, with Holmes and several volunteers, has now broadened to serving many locations in Chicago. Holmes and crew have played the role of community Santa to Black children in places throughout the South Side of Chicago. They have

door-knocked with gifts in the Roseland and West Pullman neighborhoods, and even surprised classrooms at Dulles Elementary School in Parkway Gardens. “When it comes close to that time of year, my mind is better,” says Holmes. Holmes remains encouraged to be a positive force in the lives of others from the support of her loved ones, organizations she has collaborated with such as Black Lives Matter Chicago, and activists who take the extra step in checking-in on her like Aislinn Sol. Also, she established genuine relationships with mothers who are living through the same experience of losing a loved one to police violence. Lisa Sampson, who lost her son Richard Risher to police violence, has become a good friend of Holmes’ even though they are hundreds of miles apart. In a www.chicagodefender.com

Truthout article written by Tess Raser, Sampson reveals she talks to Holmes “...damn near every day.” “We talked on Facebook first. The bond automatically clicked,” says Holmes. “We’re all fighting for the same thing and dealing with the same trauma of the police killing our children.” Holmes plans to start a foundation in honor of her son, but such is expected from a mother who uses every day as an opportunity to bring forth justice for her son. If there is anything that Dorothy Holmes proves, it is that a mother’s love can be deeply eternal and persevere through the loss of her most beloved. But it also reveals that with a nurturing community, a woman can heal and be a beacon of light for others who can resonate with her pain. “What I have learned since I

Pastor John Hannah and New Life Covenant Hosts Prayer on the 9 By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor For the past 7 years, Pastor John Hannah and New Life Covenant Church have joined with community members and lined 79th street, from Greenwood to the Dan Ryan, and prayed. The church’s “Prayer on the 9” has been a resounding call to end senseless gun violence in the city. But this year, observers will notice a stark difference in the march that will take place on Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. It will be led by youth. “We know the march the youth called in Washington, D.C.—the March for our lives…I watched that and I saw the impact of it,” Hannah told the Defender. “I thought to myself ‘if anyone should have a voice like that, it should be Chicago youth considering the amount of violence here.” I said to our church, ‘Let’s step back and let teens/young adults march and we stand on the sidelines and pray. Let’s push their voices to say enough is enough.’” Hannah said the youth from his church and community have taken the baton and run with it. The youth created a mural on 79th and Greenwood to publicize the event and they have been using social media to get the word out. “The same way that America has paid attention to the youth’s voice in Washington, I want those who are in Springfield and Chicago to pay attention to the voices here.” The effort to stop the violence doesn’t end with the march or with the prayer chain. Hannah’s church is also involved with the Chicago Police Department’s gun buy back program the following weekend, May 26. Community members will be able to come to the church and

In addition to these programs, New Life Covenant is also providing financial assistance to several youth organizations. Hannah believes a key component to violence prevention is keeping youth en-

gaged and giving them something to do. The church has targeted 3-5 organizations that focus on youth and will provide them with financial assistance. The church also hosts programs to create a safe place for youth where they can go and “don’t have to worry about foolishness,” Hannah said. Hannah is encouraging all of

Benefit Chicago Fund Commits $3 Million to Companies A woman-owned and operated company that uses a digital platform and data analytics to connect patients in under-resourced neighborhoods to nearby vital health and social services and a national nonprofit lender that provides financing to small businesses in low-to-moderate income communities are the recipients of the latest loans from the Benefit Chicago fund. The result of a collaboration among The Chicago Community Trust, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and Calvert Impact Capital, the Benefit Chicago fund began lending in 2017 to mission-directed for-profit and nonprofit enterprises that need capital to grow but are unable to access financing from conventional sources. NowPow, which received a $1.5 million loan, grew out of a health initiative of the Affordable Care Act to jump-start new approaches to promoting good health and well-being. The Hyde Park-based company uses a digital platform to

link patients or people with chronic health and social problems to community based organizations providing vital health and social services that have been e-prescribed for them. “Most of us manage our health most of the time outside the doctor’s office. Our solution creates joy for patients, their health care providers and local business and organizations by enlightening everyone to healthful community resources,” said Dr. Stacy Lindau of the University of Chicago and founder of NowPow, who with Rachel Kohler, CEO of NowPow, launched the company in 2015. “This infusion of capital will help fuel our growth and enhance our technology, so we can serve the health and social needs of more people especially Chicagoans who are struggling to find critical neighborhood resources to meet their health and other basic needs.” NowPow has more than 1,000 users from 45 South and West side health systems and community-based organizations, with plans

to expand to more city neighborhoods. NowPow focuses on providing referrals to vital self-care services, such as food pantries, mental health support groups, housing and job search assistance, and smoking cessation programs, but constantly expands its resource offerings in response to patient needs. The other recipient of the $1.5 million loan is Community Reinvestment Fund USA (CRF), a nonprofit lender and community development financial institution. It will use the loan to increase its capacity to make loans to small businesses in the Chicago area—particularly to minority entrepreneurs who experience difficulty securing loans from traditional lenders. According to CRF CEO Frank Altman, “Our work with local small business support organizations and early experience here in Chicago prompted us to expand our lending, including capital for earlier-stage businesses, with a focus on several South and West side neighborhoods and nearby sub-

urbs.” “In partnership with members of the Chicago small business support ecosystem, we continue to find ways to fill funding gaps in the city’s under-resourced neighborhoods, which the loan from the Benefit Chicago fund will help us address,” Altman said. William W. Towns, Executive Director of Benefit Chicago, said the two organizations were drawn from scores of applications received. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements that include serving a community of need, providing measurable outcomes, and ensuring repayment of the loan based on a sustainable revenue model. “The loans we announced today demonstrate there are organizations poised to help build wealth, generate jobs and connect people to needed services throughout our city,” Towns said. “This patient, flexible, risk-tolerant capital helps fill a gap in the marketplace, and the new borrowers

will provide concrete evidence to investors that their resources are at work building stronger, more vital communities and improving people’s lives.” Towns added that, while Benefit Chicago has raised $95 million toward the $100 million goal of the fund, he encourages individuals, corporations, and philanthropies to consider investing. Individuals wishing to invest can purchase Chicago-targeted Community Investment Notes from Calvert Impact Capital for as little as $20 and up to $1,000 online. Larger Notes of any size are also available through brokers, financial advisors or through Donor Advised Funds established at the Chicago Community Trust. Applications for borrowers interested in seeking loans or other investments through Benefit Chicago are considered on an ongoing basis. To learn more about the lending process, basic eligibility, and loan requirements, please visit www.BenefitChicago.org.

Another common source of leads of non-filers is tips from ex-spouses, former friends, angry neighbors, and disgruntled employees. According to IRS policy, “All delinquent returns submitted by a taxpayer, whether upon his/her own initiative or at the request of a Service representative will be accepted. However, if indications of willfulness or fraud exist, the special procedures for handling such returns must be followed.” The policy also indicates that non-filers normally will not be asked for more than six years of tax returns

without prior managerial approval. Remember, for every tax problem, there’s a solution. Constant W. The IRS has an “Individual Master File Case Creation Non-Filer Identification Program” that identifies taxpayers who have filed an individual income tax return in the prior year but failed to file in the current year. The IRS is aware of these non-filers because it has received third-party income reporting documents. The IRS also has implemented the “Business Master File Case Creation Non-Filer Identification Process.” This process also uses third-party information and other account data to identify businesses that have not filed. There are several ways the IRS has in discovering a taxpayer’s failure to file. The first is a delinquency check of returns that, according to IRS records, should have been filed. The second is the Information Returns Program (IRP), which begins with the IRS receiving information returns from payers of income. The information returns are matched with information reported on filed tax returns. This program identifies taxpayers who have failed to file and those who have underreported their income on filed tax returns. www.chicagodefender.com

Playwright Joe DiPietro tells the story of a rock ‘n’ roll social and musical revolution inspired by actual events in the phenomenal play “MEMPHIS!” The play is set in the 1950s where underground dance clubs lit up the night with explosive dancing, electrifying singing, and forbidden love. A White radio DJ named Huey Calhoun (Liam Quealy), a man considered a loser with big dreams and small pockets, falls in love with a beautiful Black young club singer by the name of Felicia Farrell (Aeriel Williams). Felicia, who is trying to make it big, knows that going North is the place where it will happen. Their prohibited love story and collaboration begins when Huey makes his presence known at Felicia’s brother’s underground dance club. Huey, the forever charismatic and energetic guy who loves the soulful sounds and rhythms of Black music, is determined to fit in with the Black culture by becoming a regular at the club despite the non-welcoming gestures of the owner and the other patrons. His heart, eyes, and ears are set on Felicia and the way her singing makes him feel. He is determined to make her a star at least in Memphis, but first, he has to convince her over-protective brother Delray (Lorenzo Rush, Jr.) that he is a good guy. Huey also needs to keep a job so that he can make his dream come true. Eventually, he finds steady work at WHBQ radio station in Mem10 May 9 - 15, 2018

Aeriel Williams, (Felicia Farrell) phis, where he plays the music that he loves, known as race music-- music that was considered taboo to the White audience because it encouraged free expression and controversial ideas. This was after-all in the era of Jim Crow where discrimination and racism were part of segregated neighborhoods, restaurants, relationships, churches, schools, dance clubs and even music. This energetic and, we must say, very talented group of actors astounded us for 2 ½ hours with explosive singing, dancing, and exceptional acting. A few of our favorites are Aeriel Williams (Felicia

Farrell), who has a voice and acting skills that will no doubt take her far in the business. The infectious Liam Quealy, who embodied the character Huey Calhoun to perfection, was inspired by the real-life Memphis DJ Phillips. He was a man who was unbiased and wanted to get people together through the sound of music. Huey was joined by his new best friend, Bobby, played by James Earl Jones II. His comedic timing was priceless! Stephen Allen, Jr., was convincible as Wailin’ Joe and lastly, another favorite-- and you might have to get the Kleenex ready for this one-- was Gator played by Gilbert www.chicagodefender.com

Domally, who melted our hearts with his backstory. Director Daryl D. Brooks made “MEMPHIS” a “MUST-SEE” with the soaring of emotions, song and laughter. It’s filled with a great musical score of songs such as “Memphis Lives In Me” sang by Huey and company; “Say A Prayer” sang by Gator and company; “Someday” sang by Felicia and company and “Underground” sang by Delray, Felicia, and company. MEMPHIS is a musical delight! We highly recommend that you see this sensational musical “MEMPHIS” about chasing fame and forbidden love, but it is also

about relationships between a brother/sister, a mother/son, and a boss/employee. This play will take you back in time with a captivating tale of forbidden love with a remarkable ensemble at Porchlight Theatre. The cast includes: Stephen Allen, Jr., (ensemble/ Wailin’ Joe) Todd Aulwurm, (ensemble) Shantel Cribbs, (ensemble) Gilbert Domally, (Gator) Ryan Dooley, (ensemble/White DJ/Mr. Collins/White Father/Gordon Grant) Ariel M. City.Life.Style Civil Rights Activist Ruby Bridges Speaks at One Hope United Gala By Marshelle R. Sanders Defender Contributing Writer Last week, non-profit organization One Hope United hosted its annual gala, Hope In Action: Rise Up for Children. One of the most iconic figures of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Ruby Bridges, came to represent the courage and dreams of an entire generation striving for racial equality. The evening was inspiring, motivating and entertaining. Many people from various backgrounds came together to tell their stories, raise money to help children, and to be encouraged by the words from the woman who integrated New Orleans’ public schools in 1960 when she was just 6 years old. Bridges told her inspiring story of determination and hope as the evening’s keynote speaker. As an innocent child, she says she didn’t understand racism. On her journey to integrate an all-White school in New Orleans, she thought it was a normal day of Mardi Gras. “That very first day I was not afraid,” Bridges shared with the audience. “ I remember people shouting and throwing things; I knew that if I got pass the crowd and got into the school, everything was going to be okay.” For her courage, Bridges’ family was met with community ostracism, job loss, and physical threats. But Bridges prevailed, and New Orleans eventually succeeded in integrating its school system. One thing that she was told by her mother everyday was to just pray. “My mom said that I would have to pray every day until 3 o’clock when I walked back through the door. But she also used to tell me that today was a different day and a different time for African Americans, and ‘if you want to see change, you have to step up and do it yourself.’” Bridges has now started a foundation to figure out ways to bring a diverse group of kids together. She has started a program called “Ruby’s Bridges,” where she takes two schools and brings them together to do community service projects. “I believe that’s how we’re going to get pass our racial differences; it’s going to come from our kids... we get a group of diverse kids together; no matter what the project is that they’re doing, it has to be a diverse setting. It is my way of contributing to ending the cycle of racism.” At the gala where Bridges spoke, One Hope United also honored the Grand Victoria FoundaTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

The Foundation invests income from the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin, Ill., to fund initiatives that can turn Illinois communities into vibrant civic hubs. A key focus of their funding is early education, which is also a core pillar of One Hope United’s programs. One Hope United operates 12 child care and early education centers throughout Chicagoland. One Hope United also presented its Fourth Annual Ermit Finch Impact Award. This award honors an individual who has made a lasting impact on the community through service to One Hope United’s vision of a “life without limits” for every child and family. The award is named after Ermit

Finch, a long-serving board member and alumnus of One Hope United. This year’s recipient was Jeremy Harvey, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning and Innovations at the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services. Harvey spent the ages of 4 to 23 in the Illinois foster care system and has devoted his career to advocating and leading change for Illinois’ youth in care, including launching and implementing Illinois’ Youth Bill of Rights. Another evening highlight was a musical performance by Miguel Cervantes, who stars as Alexander Hamilton in the Chicago production of the Tony and Pulitzer-award-winning musical “Hamilton.” Cervantes is also a strong www.chicagodefender.com

advocate for children’s health and well-being; his daughter Adelaide was diagnosed with epilepsy the same week he was cast in Hamilton. The night was dedicated to so many people who bring hope and help through their work. “It helps all of Chicago when we make sure our young people get the services and support they need to become all they can,” said Theresa Dear, board chair of One Hope United. “We are proud of the work we’ve accomplished together—and there’s so much more we can and will achieve.” One Hope United is a private human service organization that offers a diverse array of early child-

hood education, prevention, intervention and community-based programs. The non-profit began over 120 years ago with the same vision it holds today: for every child and family to have a life without limits. One Hope United’s team of nearly 800 talented professionals serves thousands of children and families each year in Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Florida. There are thousands of children in need of stable, loving families. While many of these children are victims of neglect and abuse, they have great potential to thrive in a nurturing environment. Their foster and adoptive families provide safe homes for these vulnerable children and youth with the assistance provided by the agency. May 9 - 15, 2018 11

Jack and Jill of America Black Family Day Commemorates the Children’s Crusade Last weekend, members and guests of several Chicago area chapters of Jack and Jill of America gathered at the lakefront to remember the Children’s Crusade, which occurred in 1963 in Birmingham, Ala. The Children’s Crusade is considered one of the most inspiring and courageous acts of resistance and peaceful protest by children. Julianna Stratton, Democratic Nominee for Lt. Governor of Illinois said: “As we commemorate the Birmingham Crusade and how young people got up and protested and made their voices be heard, it is something that we know right now continues to

be important for young people to recognize that they have a role in the political process and that their voices matter. As we think about issues in our community, we not only think about them in their current time, but we think about them generationally and what’s to come. Having young people at the table is important and it’s important that we keep them at the forefront.” Illinois Senator Elgie Simms said: “It’s great to see our young people and their families come together to commemorate such a historic event in our history. These types of efforts teach our children about civic engagement

and the political process. Kudos to Jack & Jill for putting this together and leading the way.” Reverend Janette Wilson said: “This is apart of the legacy of Jack and Jill to teach our children. Our children must always have an everlasting commitment to the struggle for justice and human rights. They can’t have it if we don’t teach them. They can’t go where we don’t tell them. This commemoration of our history is apart of the efforts to spur that commitment for youth involvement and leadership development.”

What Mama REALLY Wants for Mother’s Day By Sheri Flanders 12 Voices Mother’s Day is May 13 and I know most of ya’ll don’t have a gift yet. Please allow me to interrupt your mad dash to the nearest Walgreens for a bouquet of wilted flowers and chalky Russel Sto- Sheri Flanders ver’s candies to let you know what your mother really wants for Mother’s Day. 1. Getting the Hell Away From You We’ve all seen those heartwarming Hallmark commercials: Mom is laying in bed, sound asleep when suddenly Dad, the 2.5 kids (the teenager is pregnant) and the golden-retriever bust into the bedroom with a cheery “SURPRISE!” and start jumping all over the bed, hugging her and serving her breakfast in bed. WHY DID THEY WAKE HER UP? That mom was sleeping soundly, snoring and drooling on her pillow, dreaming about being rescued from a burning building by Black Panther. She was just about to peel off his spandex and express her gratitude when the entire house decides to bust in on her! That is not a gift; that is an assault. BREAKFAST IN BED IS NOT A GIFT! Not when you are surrounded by people who don’t know how to shut up and allow you to read the New York Times in silence. Also, you know that the breakfast is trash because the toddler just had to “help” and dumped half the shaker of salt in the eggs anyway. So now in addition to being exhausted, Mom is going to have a stomachache. And she’s still going to have to clean the kitchen by herself and drive everyone to soccer practice after. This mom does not need more of her loving family and their wacky shenanigans. She just wants to take a poop without a toddler barging through the bathroom door. You want to give mom a real gift? Let her slowly wake up at noon. As she staggers downstairs bleary-eyed, she discovers that the house is dead quiet - like everyone got raptured except for her. She makes her way into the kitchen and there is a fresh pot of coffee, a bottle of wine, one thousand dollars and a post-it note that says: “We gone until next Tuesday.” 2. Taking Her Advice For Once THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Your mother loves you. She brought you into this world and she can take you out of it. But she’d rather you stay in it and flourish so that she can brag about you to her girlfriends at the salon in her golden years. Mother’s Day rolls around and you buy her a lovely diamond tennis bracelet with matching diamond earrings. She looks up with tears in her eyes and throws the gift in your face! Why? “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP SELLING THAT STUFF, PETEY? If you don’t stop running drugs you’re going to end up north like your cousin! I’m not trying to see my kids in the grave before I get there. And don’t you chime in, Tasha. You haven’t had a job since Destiny’s Child was together. But I know you’re fixin’ your mouth to ask me to watch my grandbaby while you go out tonight with your “friend.” Don’t know what kind of a friend won’t put a ring on your finger after five years. Don’t nobody buy the cow when the milk is free. Thank you for the lovely tennis bracelet, Petey.” Give her the gift of saying, “You’re right, ma.” Those words are worth more than a thousand hot tennis bracelets. 3. Realizing She Is A Flawed Human Person Our society mythologizes mothers. Mothers are our first home,

superheroes, nurturers, teachers, protectors, spiritual advisors, best friends, housecleaners, financial advisors, hairdressers, therapists and personal chefs. Mothers sacrifice for us, and because of that, we perch them upon the highest pedestal. We owe them everything, and we give them everything – except the ability to be human. When a mom falls short, the world revolts. Yet isn’t it enough that Mom is a criminal defense lawyer that raised three children by herself? Does she have to make sugar cookies for the PTA bake sale too? Isn’t it enough that she scraped her way to success through the projects to finally graduate with her GED? Does she have to write an award-winning movie about it starring Sandra Bullock too? Isn’t it enough that Mom put dinner on the table every night? Do we have to criticize her for blowing our college savings at the casino? This Mother’s Day, hold your mom to the same standard as your crappiest friend. We all have friends who are terrible cooks; friends who smoke, drink and swear. Friends who are terrible at expressing their emotions, terrible at being emotional supports, friends who can’t manage money, keep a job or relationship. We have friends who are petty and messy and revel in drama. We sometimes have friends who are self-absorbed stuck up prissy www.chicagodefender.com

brats, and friends who are super shady and will definitely serve 1020 in a Supermax one day. And we even have friends who should definitely never, ever be parents, or even trusted with watering a houseplant. And yet, we still find a way to love them. So for this Mother’s Day, let your mom step down off her pedestal of perfection for one day and just let her be a friend. MOTHER’S DAY

Cooking For Mom on Mother’s Day Gives Kids Food For Thought Taking mom out for brunch or dinner is a traditional way to celebrate her on Mother’s Day. But there’s another way that incorporates food, and it can be fun for the family as well as food for thought for the kids. In other words, when you involve the children in the meal preparation on Mother’s Day, it might lead to a lifelong interest in cooking. The idea, says a chef to the celebrities, is to ingrain healthy nutritional habits and other life skills through involving the kids more in the kitchen. “Giving mom a nice day by preparing a tasty recipe, and the kids having fun doing it, is a great gift for both the children and mother,” says Zipora Einav (www.chefzipora.com), author of Recipe for a Delicious Life. “It may even mark the beginning of an interest in cooking, along with all the benefits of learning to eat healthy and do things for others. “It’s helpful to their self-sufficiency and self-confidence. They’ll become well-versed in how to help their future family eat healthy and have fun making meals together, because the heart of a family is in the kitchen. And a lot of families are so busy these days, they don’t spend enough time in there together or at the kitchen table.”

Chef Zipora offers a tasty recipe for Mother’s Day that the kids can have fun preparing and serving. The Kelly Family’s Blueberry Loaf Ingredients - cake: 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons lemon peel ¾ cup buttermilk ½ cup coconut oil 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup fresh blueberries Ingredients - lemon glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice Instructions Preheat oven to 350. Spray 8½inch x 4-inch bread pan with olive oil. In a bowl, mix flour, salt and baking powder. In another bowl, combine the sugar and lemon peel. Rub together with your fingers until the mixture feels like sand. Then add to the dry ingredients and mix well. In a second bowl, combine the buttermilk, coconut oil, eggs, lem-

on juice, and vanilla extract. Mix well and then slowly add to the dry ingredients. Gently fold in the fresh blueberries, and don’t overmix. Pour the mixture into the bread pan. Bake 65-70 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on rack for 15 minutes, then remove the cake from the loaf and continue to cool. To make the lemon glaze: In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar and lemon juice. Spread onto the cooled blueberry loaf. The Rockies ended up taking the last two games of the series in Chicago sending the Cubs to "The Lou" to face the longtime division rival St. Louis Cardinals for a weekend series. What happened next was an old-fashioned ass whooping. The Cardinals got the job done as ex-Cub Dexter Fowler completed the cipher with a walk off HR in the 24 May 9 - 15, 2018

White Sox Update on Pitcher Danny Farquhar Sports by #TheBigs Chicago White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar, who suffered a brain hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm during a home game on April 20, was discharged from RUSH University Medical Center Monday, May 7 afternoon and is resting at home with his family. Dr. Demetrius Lopes, Farquhar’s neurosurgeon, expects Danny to be able to pitch again in the future, but Dr. Lopes will not medically release Farquhar to pitch in a competitive game during the 2018 season in order to allow him to fully recover from the brain hemorrhage. Farquhar and his family have appreciated the many cards, tweets, texts and well wishes they have received from friends and fans over the past weeks. The White Sox organization continues to wish Danny a speedy and full recovery. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
