COVER STORY
Centennial Celebration: The Life and Legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks By Shari Noland Defender Executive Editor Brooks’ daughter Nora talks about her new book featuring her mom’s work and gives advice for emerging poets. Also, read two Gwendolyn Brooks poems published in the Defender back in 1936. Poets, writers, historians, and musicians in the city and across the state are creatively celebrating the life and legacy of the late Gwendolyn “Gwendie” Brooks, the first African American person to ever win the Pulitzer Prize and the Illinois Poet Laureate for more than 30 years. Widely considered one the greatest writers of the 20th century, Brooks’ centennial celebrations have been ongoing since January of this year. Today, June 7, marks the 5th annual “BrooksDay,” an official birthday party in her honor at the University of Chicago. Brooks’ daughter, Nora Brooks Blakely, a successful playwright, teacher and speaker in her own right, is among those leading the efforts to celebrate her mother’s distinguished body of work throughout the year. “My mother didn’t have quite as much visibility as a writer of her stature probably should have. Part of that was her commitment to hiding from video, and photography, and so forth so that people like Alice Walker, Tony Morrison, the late Maya Angelou, they’re all far more visible than Mama was. She was content with that, but in her honor, we aren’t. We think that this is a wonderful opportunity, the centennial, to make her a lot more visible,” said Blakely. Brooks began writing at age 13. Her works were shaped by the racial dynamics and social injustice she experienced and witnessed while living on the South Side of the city, where she grew up. She was only 17 when she began submitting her work to “Lights and Shadows,” the poetry column in the editorial section of the Chicago Defender. By 1934, Brooks had published nearly 100 poems in the paper and joined the Defender as an adjunct staff member. She had several well-known literary role models, including Langston Hughes, who also wrote for the Defender. As a tribute to Brooks’ early career with the Defender, we are republishing two of these early poems in the paper today and publishing more online at ChicagoDefender.com. Brooks went on to marry Henry Blakely in 1938. They had two kids, Nora and Henry, Jr. Nora, producing artistic director and primary playwright for Chocolate Chips Theatre Company in Chicago for 29 years, gave us more insight about what it was like to grow up with her mom and dishes about her new book, “Seasons,” which includes Gwendolyn Brooks’ ear-

Nora Brooks Blakely
Nora Brooks Blakely pays tribute to her mother in her latest book “Seasons.” ly work, her later work, and poems she wrote for children and adults. What advice did your mom give to emerging poets? I can give you two tips from the Young Poets Primer in my new book, “Seasons,” because they’re both pretty short. Tip number 12: In writing your poems, tell the truth as you know it. Tell your truth. Don’t try to sugar it up. Don’t force your poem to be nice, or proper, or normal, or happy if it does not want to be. Remember that poetry is life distilled and that life is not always nice, or proper, or normal, or happy, or smooth, or even edged. And tip number 30: Poetry has a future. You may initiate new forms. You may create. You do not have to consider that everything has been done. You do not

have to write sonnets, villanelle, heroic couplets, haiku, Tanka simply because centuries of poets have written such. Dare to invent something. Understand that somebody invented the sonnet. Understand the day before the sonnet was invented there was no sonnet. Do you see some similarities between her style and current day spoken word poetry? I think in some of her pieces, yes. Some of her poetry is beautifully written as it is, reading it written on the page, but especially after 1967 when she began to tinker with her style and became more politically conscious because she was always interested in what was happening in peoples’ lives--particularly in Black peoples’ lives. A lot of that was addressed even before 1967, but her style of writing definitely changed and some of it certainly would work as spoken word. Did she talk about working for the Defender? I knew about it, of course. She kept scrapbooks of her pieces that had been published in the Defender. In the archives down at University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, those scrapbooks with a lot of her pieces from the Defender are there. The Defender was definitely a major part of her writing history, long before the Pulitzer Prize and how most people were aware of her. Your mom and dad had other jobs, but they were both writers. What was that like growing up? continued on page 04

Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park Celebrates Namesake with Mosaic Mural Award-winning artist and educator Tracy Van Duinen, who has murals all over the city of Chicago, is collaborating with the Oak Park Education Foundation (OPEF) and Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School in Oak Park on an outdoor community mosaic mural in honor of the school’s namesake. Part of the project includes a nod to the 50th anniversary of the South Side of Chicago’s Wall of Respect with four spots dedicated to community people and culture within the context of the school--including, of course, Gwendolyn Brooks. “The concept is amazing. Using mosaics, mirrors and paintings will create an interesting visual for our corner. I also love the focus words (respect, empower, create). These are themes that we are trying to infuse in our students’ learning experience at Brooks. The color scheme will certainly brighten up our beige/brown wall as well as act as a great backdrop to our new garden name Eventide (the title of the first poem published by Gwendolyn Brooks at the age of 13),” said principal LeeAndra Khan. “Being a current Bronzeville resident, I love the fact that we are using a wall to commemorate her life. My granny would talk about the Wall of Respect and what Black Chicago was like in those days. Creating our own version of a wall here at Brooks Middle school is a beautiful thing.” Van Duinen has worked at Oak Park River Forest High School for three years and is a member of the Chicago Public Arts Group. He received a Golden Apple Award in 2001 while working as a teacher at Austin Community Academy High School in Chicago. OPEF is a nonprofit based in Oak Park with a mission to brings artists, architects, scientists, and technology experts into K-8th grade public school classrooms in the local school district. The group initiated the project back in November and it will be completed at the end of June during its BASE Camp, which is a wide selection of paid summer enrichment offerings. One of the more popular BASE Camp activities for the past seven years has been the mural project. “Since its creation seven years ago, BASE Camp has partnered with the community to do a large-scale art project. The most visible example of this would be the science mural tour under the Green Line viaducts —paintings covering six different walls. We were looking

Basically, it was the fact that this was part of how my brother and I lived in our home. It was, “Do you read? Do you sleep? Do you eat? Do you write?” Those were just things that were taken for granted that were part of what you did. The understanding of writing as a normal part of life; the opportunity to go with her not only to many of her readings but to the readings of other writers and really get to hear what good writing sounded like. All of that was very important to me as I grew up as a human being and as I grew up as a writer. Which of your mom’s poems is your favorite? “Paul Robeson.” A lot of people
now quote the last three lines of Paul Robeson because they’re so important, and that poem is, to me, much more representative of Mama’s general message to the world. It’s a wonderful poem. It’s a power poem. The last three lines of it are, “We are each other’s harvest. We are each other’s business. We are each other’s magnitude and bond.” Especially at a time like we are in now with interesting people in the White House, I think it’s even more important for people to remember those lines. A few poems written by Gwendolyn Brooks and published in the poetry column called Lights and Shadows “A Little Bit of Everything” in the Chicago Defender:

LeeAndra Khan, Principal, Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School to take this art project in a new direction with a new medium,” said Lindsay Bruce OPEF BASE Camp Director. During the year, Van Duinen has collaborated with Brooks’ art teacher Kristiana Murray. In the summer, he will finalize the project with Kim Jones, a BASE Camp teacher. Part of the cost for the project has been offset with sale of personalized tiles that feature words or photos submitted by people who purchase them. Those tiles will be incorporated into the finished mural. “It lets people put their hand in it. People will go up to the wall by finding their piece of it. Then people will take ownership of the mural as a community,” said Van Duinen.
The oak leaves represent the younger Oak Park inhabitants influenced by Gwendolyn Brooks’ life and work. They will be painted red and fill the body of the central Gwendolyn Brooks figure. 04 June 7 - 13, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
There is a silence that grows deep with age For you who dread the coming of that white That stamps the termination of your stage Of Emerald youth, there is a finer light. A clearer, warmer, more quiescent glow Oh, who would rather stand in lightening’s blaze. Amidst a shrieking blare and windy flow Than in the stilly softness of moon rays? I am not old. I would that I were old Lost in the sweet recesses of that state. When fold on fold of stillness, fold on fold Breaks through the strained heart’s queerly bolted gate I still am young – but would I were not young. But at that time of life when youth’s cold load From off the heart, like some sheer wrap is flung And all’s pacific in the soul’s abode There is a silence fashioned of dead fears And gentle faiths in what has not yet been. A perfect silence that comes on with years. And clear’s a space that truth may enter in. Read more of her work and see a video of her life on ChicagoDefender.com.

Bishop T.D. Jakes: The Art of Ministry By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Bishop T.D. Jakes is a force of nature whose ministry has spanned the globe through his various entities, including his film, television and digital companies. His overpowering presence is not hard to notice when he enters the room, but his magnifying personality is what draws many admirers to his warm spirit. His ministry, The Potter’s House (TPH), was founded in 1996 and is currently 30,000 members strong, not including the millions of followers around the world. From the man who sealed his theatrical, film and television empire with “Woman Thou Art Loosed” to creating TPH campuses in South Africa and Australia—his upcoming Megafest is expected to attract about 100,000 attendees. The Chicago Defender sat down with Bishop Jakes for a candid conversation about the highly anticipated four-day conference being held from June 28 through July 2 in Dallas. What makes this year’s Megafest in Dallas very special? It’s designed so that you can tailor your experience to what your interests are. We’ve got the international faith and family film festival so we’re doing a lot of entertainment. The for-profit company is a film production company so our relationships with Sony and various production houses out of L.A. have created opportunities for us to bring in actors and entertainers. Newly released or yet-to-be released films are centered around family friendly or faith content. We’ve got another section that’s focused totally on entrepreneurship and it is for all ages. We are very interested in the trends amongst African-American women going into business more readily than any other people group. We’re looking to enhance that experience because they are struggling to stay in business. We’ll be bringing in lenders and teaching techniques that will help them to be more proficient at doing the business that they’re doing—not just women, but men as well. We’re also looking at junior high and high school-aged kids who have entrepreneurial instincts; the ones who have the best ideas can win up to $15,000. We’ve got $50,000 in reserve to help them fund a business so that we can point them towards their entrepreneurial pursuits. We’ve got a comedy show featuring Cedric the Entertainer and Nephew Tommy, and a whole bunch of other comedians are coming together to provide some comedy relief for the experience. There’s the McDonald’s Gospel Fest and we’ve got regular ministry and spiritual empowerment programs running simultaneously throughout the city. And, we’re just a few weeks away. I’ve been busy pullwww.chicagodefender.com
ing all the final details together for that. Chicago has many faith leaders with mega congregations. Who are the key pastors you’re working with from here on this year’s Megafest in Dallas? I’ve worked with Pastor [James] Meeks throughout the years. This year we have Pastor Bill Winston, who’s going to be speaking, along with Pastor John Hannah, who’s doing a midnight prayer for us. One of the first events I took on the road was to Chicago; we were at Johnnie Colemon’s church—the late Johnnie Colemon. So, I’ve been coming to Chicago a long time, got a lot of friends here and love it here. Chicago is number four in the nation in support for Megafest so being here is my way of saying ‘thank you to Chicago’ to how they’ve supported me down through the years. We’ve seen your film production company grow in the last few years. How important was it to branch out with your message through film? Probably long before you knew who I was, we were coming to the Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago doing Gospel plays. We started off doing Gospel plays and then migrated over to film through working with Reuben Cannon during “Woman Thou Art Loosed,” which originally was going to be done for television and then we entered it into the Magnolia Film Festival. We won the film festival and after we won the film festival, we went to screen with it and that started a whole new world for me. People need to hear from us, and rather than complain about what we don’t like about Hollywood—I’d rather get out there and tell my own stories. Do things that are fascinating to me and see if there’s any interest in the broader market for it. You’re considered one of the more visible faith leaders whose captured both celebrity and non-celebrity followers. What is your formula for staying true to yourself without ego? When I do get to sit down and eat chicken wings, it’s with ordinary people, and nobody really knows it because I think that the mistake about me is that I see myself as very ordinary. I realize I’ve been blessed to have an extraordinary life, but I see myself at my core as a very ordinary, fried okra-type person. My mother is from Alabama and my father is from Mississippi. I grew up in poverty. I have not forgotten where I came from. I love people, I’m curious about people, I’m fascinated about all types of people and I think my ministry has benefited from that. We’ve seen other church leaders crossing over on the political side endorsing political candidates. Where do you find yourself when you’re at that
crossroads of deciding whether you should cross over that line? Let me first say I have no desire to run for office, I love myself too much to go through that. Secondly, more importantly, I really don’t feel like I’m called to do that, and I think that our country really needs its best and brightest who are called to do that. I have avoided endorsing candidates. I’ve seen it backfire so much that I’m a little antsy about doing that. I have been aggressive about endorsing issues—I feel most comfortable supporting policies and issues rather than politics and individuals. How do you also encourage young ministers to follow a path of integrity, accountability and sincerity, dealing with people from all areas and backgrounds? I think that showing love to people—we may not always agree with people, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be loving and love. When you start talking about integrity, I don’t really think about our perspective about others. I think it’s about our introspection of ourselves. What I have learned—time depends on where that person is in their life at that time. There’s a
lot of difference between accountability to a minister who is 25 and another minister who is 75. They’re at a different stage of life. What is the first verse or saying that comes to mind when you wake up in the morning? One of my pep phrases is ‘you’ll win if you don’t quit.’ I think that most people fail because they gave up too soon, and sometimes you don’t win until the last inning of the game. But you’ll never find out if you quit first, and I encourage myself with that every day. It’s very important to me. The second thing that I say to people is that all of us who have something-- whether it is a platform, influence, money or whatever it is--we have an obligation to make sure a percentage of that goes back to other people. When we leave the door open for who’s next—I think it’s important that you hold yourself accountable to that. Giving is better than receiving, and if you really have received a lot, you have an obligation to give a lot.

The Battle For Affordable Housing in Jefferson Park By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In typical Chicago style, division is brewing on the Northwest side of town— and it’s over affordable housing. Add a few sprinkles of race and class and you’ve got a full-blown fight indicative to what many communities around the city have endured or will endure in the future. Here’s the deal. A proposal for a 100-unit mixed-income, affordable housing development has been met with mixed emotions. The development is slated to house 80 units that will be listed at below market rate and reserve up to 30 of those units for Chicago Housing Authority voucher-holders, according to a report by DNAinfo Chicago. The site is located at 5150 N. Northwest Highway, a former FSP food distribution center. In addition to the proposed seven-story housing development, a five-story storage warehouse facility will be built in close proximity to the housing building. The City Council’s Committee on Zoning, Landmarks, and Building Standards passed the request of LSC Development, LLC, the construction company responsible for both projects, to reclassify the zoning for the construction site from a B1-1 Neighborhood Shopping District to a B3-5 Community Shopping District and finally to a Planned Development at its most recent meeting on May 22. According to the official summary of the committee meeting, the storage facil-

The remaining area will be dedicated to the residential housing building. Prior to the City Council’s Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Standards ruling on the reclassification of 5150 N.
Northwest Highway, a melting pot of community stakeholders, affordable housing advocates, curious spectators, elected officials, and more filled the lobby area of City Hall’s second floor with a cacophony of voices anxiously awaiting a decision that would affect some of their lives forever. The crowd of mostly middle-aged adults hailed from predominantly White Jefferson

Park and places beyond, which for some of the individuals present was part of their concern. How can people who do not live in Jefferson Park or who do not own homes in Jefferson Park understand Jefferson Park or its people? Why should outside influencers’ input ultimately change not just the outward appearance but the spirit of the community? Opposition to the proposed affordable housing structure is as fierce as it is multifaceted. Specifically, opponents to the project cite issues such as school overcrowding, a seven-story building does not “fit the character of the neighborhood,” increased density, increased crime, and more. Opponents, most of whom are current Jefferson Park residents and homeowners, have voiced their opinions in public forums both in town hall meetings as well as online. One such piece from the opposition comes in the form of a Change.org petition to the Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association which calls for developers to adhere to the Gladstone Park Master Plan which, among several items, would limit new developments to just four-stories. Already, the petition has garnered more than 3,000 signatures. Trisha Kannon, who lived within Jefferson Park for multiple years, said there appears to be a targeted public relations campaign to take the focus off the issues. She said she’s in favor of a four-story building. “It’s a quality of life issue, for sure, and it’s disrespectful to real race issues and to the neighbors to cloud the issue this way,” said Kannon. “I’m disappointed about the prejudice angle because [while] I do think racism exists, of course, that’s not the case in this particular conversation.” continued on page 07

COMMENTARY
The ‘N’ word: When to be offended By T. Shawn Taylor Defender Guest Writer If you watched comedian Larry Wilmore’s roast of President Obama at his final White House Correspondents dinner, then you recall the drop-the-mic, cringe-worthy T. Shawn Taylor moment when Wilmore ended his diatribe by directly addressing the president as “my n*****.” Black folks’ reaction to Wilmore’s controversial ending appeared to be split along generational lines. Millennials and some Gen Xers (not this one, by the way) were quick to defend Wilmore, who is Black, as “keeping it real” to squash any notion that he had crossed a boundary during the televised event, in front of a predominately White audience. I heard from older Black Americans who were outraged and felt Wilmore should be reprimanded by his community, at the very least, and blackballed in his profession, at best. That brings me to Bill Maher. The late-night talk show host and comedian, no stranger to controversy, has apologized for using the “N” word during a live interview with a Republican senator from Nebraska on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher.” The conversation wended from the two talking about adults acting like adolescents and taking over Halloween from children to Sen. Ben Sasse commenting that Nebraskans don’t have time for such nonsense and inviting Maher to visit and come “work in the fields with us.” That’s when Maher, feigning insult, shot back, “I’m a house n*****.” Some audience members chuckled and others audibly gasped. I get it. Hearing a White man utter a word that has incubated hate and loathing toward Black people for centuries, in that moment, I don’t blame them. There are rules. (Right?) And though Maher is known for making up “New Rules,” in fact, at the end of every show, this time he might have taken his “honorary brotha” status too far. Maher apologized but that hasn’t muted calls for his firing. Some articles I’ve read question the future of the show, and include a laundry list of Maher’s politically and religiously incorrect statements throughout the years. What I have yet to see is a list of the dozens of times Maher has spoken out passionately in defense www.chicagodefender.com
of President Obama, taking on Black pundits like Cornell West, who by the way was dissing Obama again on “Real Time” a week earlier. (I thought Maher was going to strangle him with that scarf around his neck.) Maher has consistently and unabashedly railed against institutional racism and policies that have left African Americans disproportionately imprisoned, in poverty, unemployed and under-educated. I believe Maher to be a genuine and forceful advocate for Black equality in America, so I accept his apology. From all I have seen of Bill Maher, the “N” word is not a weapon he’d wield to inflict pain and insult on someone like me. No more than Larry Wilmore would. Both comedians took a risk in using that word in those settings, but neither meant to harm. Wilmore’s, I suspect, was planned. Maher’s was not. Because Maher is White, the rules governing the use of that word dictate that he overstepped. That word can be offensive no matter who utters it. But let’s not act as if Bill Maher is suddenly some yahoo with a Confederate flag tattooed on his arm. By comparison, I was more upset when Wilmore said it. When Maher used the “N” word, he was referring to himself. When Wilmore used it, he was referring to our Black president, who no doubt has been called that by some of his detractors behind his back. (Come on, we know it’s true!) Throughout his presidency, Obama was disrespected more than any president in history, because he’s Black. I imagine that, like Maher’s audience, some of those who were watching chuckled when Wilmore turned to Obama and said “my n****”, while others gasped. I know what Wilmore meant; he didn’t mean to be vile or offend the president or people like me, no more than Maher did. Although, I initially thought, like those Southwest Airlines commercials, “Wanna get away?” Under a rock, in a storm cellar, on the moon, anywhere except within rewind, YouTube, or DVR of what I believe was an uncomfortable, if not embarrassing as hell, moment for our president and first lady. I didn’t watch the episode of “Real Time” when Maher transgressed, but I read about it and cringed. That said, it isn’t my wish to see either comedian blackballed. However, whether that word is used to offend, feed hate, get a laugh, or give a high five, I do believe we need a new rule regarding use of the “N” word. Stop giving it power. T. Shawn Taylor is a writer and entrepreneur in Chicago.
JEFFERSON PARK CONT. Jefferson Park, continued from, Page 06
Meanwhile, cautious hope for an affordable housing victory was on the horizon and nearly within reach. Ald. John Arena (45th Ward) spoke in support of the affordable housing development at a press conference hosted by Neighbors for Affordable Housing in Jefferson Park, Access Living, and The Disability Rights Action Coalition for Housing. Arena was joined by 47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar; 22nd Ward Ald. Ricardo Muñoz; 17th Ward Ald. David Moore; and 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack and several community organizers. Following the press conference, Arena said he was “proud” of the community’s support of the project and thanked them for persevering in the face of opposition. He explained that his constituents who are not in favor of the project should consider the dearth of housing options with elevator access and the number of empty lots and derelict buildings that don’t contribute to the tax base. He added that it’s an “economic reality” that underutilized land should be developed as a means to generate revenue for local schools. He cited an estimate from the Metropolitan Planning Council that calculated the economic impact of the project would be $3 million a year. “In just buying power, these folks are going to come into our community and support our restaurants, dentists and doctors; all of whom have said we are losing patients, we need young vibrant families to come in to support our local businesses,” said Arena. Arena attempted to appeal to the hearts and minds of the individuals opposed to the project with special consideration to those who called for an increased business presence within the ward. “Well, the reality of the world is to get something you have to move something,” said Arena. “You have to deliver something and we’re going to deliver housing, we’re going to add critical retail space, we’re going to give [incoming residents] community life and access to schools and education that’s unmatched in the City of Chicago.” One of the underlying aspects that emerged during the discussion for new affordable housing in Jefferson Park is the negative perception of the assumed prospective residents. Advocates for the project suspect racism may play a role in the opposition’s viewpoint. Ben Goldsmith, Tenant Organizer for Chicago Housing Initiative, contends that statements loaded with criticism that include terms like “low income,” “Section 8”, and any inference to an increase in crime may be coded racist rhetoric. He said there shouldn’t be any compromising with bigotry and that a seven-story building is already a compromise. He added opponents to the project know if the building is only four-stories tall the development will no longer suit its intended purpose. “We know what people mean when they come to a community meeting and shout, ‘no Section 8’,” said Goldsmith. “We also know what they mean when they say housing project. It’s very clear that it’s the who and not the what, there’s no confusion. When things get heated, people forget to dog whistle and they’re pretty straightforward about who they are talking about.” Goldsmith said according to his organization’s research, housing plans similar to the one proposed typically do not make a negative impact on neighborhoods they’re joining.
Also, he said the housing gives the residents who are able to move into the completed space a fantastic opportunity. Arena said he does not know what is in someone’s heart but he will continue to speak the truth about what he thinks is best for the ward. He said he’s heard questionable remarks while at the town hall meetings. “I know what I heard in that meeting was not about any of the rational issues that they’re trying to bring up now about height and density, it was about others, it was about ‘our neighborhood can’t accept this’,” said Arena. “Well, we have to accept new people are moving into our neighborhood all the time, they’re moving into our single family homes and we need housing that is available to all. Jefferson Park is a changing community relative to decades past. According to a January 2013 report by Social IMPACT Research Center based on an analysis of data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, 83.9 percent, or 21,892 of the neighborhood’s 26,099 residents, were White. Meanwhile, African Americans made up 1.6 percent (405) of the all residents; Asians consisted of 9.3 percent (2,432); and Hispanics were the largest number of minorities with 20.4 percent of the population or 5,332. The data was taken from the 2006-2011 American community survey. Jefferson Park is among several northwest side Chicago communities to remain by-andlarge predominantly White. According to a 2013 report by the Huffington Post, from 1920-2000, Jefferson Park remained over 90 percent White until 2000. The only communities that were still listed as 90 percent White were Edison Park, Norwood Park and Mount Greenwood in the southwest area of Chicago. Marva Williams, a Jefferson Park resident and homeowner with her husband since September 2002, said she’s seen “a few” more African American and Latino families move into the community since her family’s arrival, however, Jefferson Park is still a predominantly White community. She called the fight in favor of affordable housing in Jefferson Park “great.” “I think affordable housing needs to be integrated throughout the City of Chicago,” said Williams. “I think the community has so many assets we can share to lower income people, and also the development has market rate housing so there will be people at the median income as well as above.” Williams’ statement that the Jefferson Park community has much to offer low income communities can be traced to the fact that the community itself is well above the poverty rate. Jefferson Park’s poverty rate was one the third lowest of any community in Chicago from 2007-2011, according to the Social IMPACT Research Center. In fact, it was one of only six communities in the city to have a poverty rate in the single digits. Jefferson Park was able to maintain its low poverty rate as other communities faltered. In 2000, 11 communities were in the single digits in terms of poverty rate. However, affordable housing within the Jefferson Park neighborhood is practically non-existent. A quick search on Zillow.com revealed rental prices for apartments in Jefferson Park ranged from $800-$2,000+ per month for one to three bedroom apartments. But, with the recent green light from the zoning committee, that could be changing as soon as the affordable housing project gets underway—even amidst opposition.

Alden Loury Talks Ashburn and the Legacy of Racial Transition in Chicago Reuben Unrau City Bureau “In Chicago, when we do see racial change, it’s an all or nothing thing. It goes from one extreme to another,” said Alden Loury, director of research and evaluation at the Metropolitan Planning Council. Growing up in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood in the 1970s, Loury says he would often dream about the community to the west. He remembers crossing Western Avenue and traversing into Ashburn, a predominantly White area where to him, “everything seemed better.” “The houses seemed better, the cars seemed better, the streets seemed cleaner, the sun even seemed like it shined brighter,” said Loury, who is now director of research and evaluation at the Metropolitan Planning Council. “It just felt like a higher quality of life.” Forty years later, the green lawns and single-family bungalows remain, but the residents have changed. According to census data, between 1990 and 2014 Ashburn’s White population shrank from more than 30,000 to just over 6,000 at a time when middle class African American and Hispanic families moved to the neighborhood in droves. Despite many African Americans leaving the city altogether, Ashburn remained a stronghold where Blacks could buy homes and escape from some of the economic decline of neighborhoods further east. In a report released in March titled “The Cost of Segregation,” the Metropolitan Planning Council found that Chicago has seen a slight decline in racial and economic segregation. Here, Loury, who helped author the report, discusses integration, racial change, and how Ashburn serves as a model for the rest of Chicago. What have you noticed about the change in racial segregation in Chicago since the 1990s? There are communities that are shifting from one racial group to another. In 1990, Ashburn was largely a mostly White middle-class community and it has shifted to a middle-class African American and Latino community. The eastern sections of Ashburn are predominantly Black now, the western sections are mostly Latino, and still maybe 13 percent of the community is White, found mostly in the western sections of it. Ashburn stands out since it saw a dramatic shift from 1990 to 2010, after a lot of the other demographic shifts in the city already happened. But you’re also seeing levels of change in Morgan Park, and the communities a little north of Ashburn that have become more Latino, that were predominantly White at some point. So does Ashburn serve as an example of a racially integrated neighborhood? In 10 to 20 years from now, once those communities have stabilized as middle-class largely Latino and African American, we’ll look back and say that we weren’t really seeing a decline in racial segregation, we were just seeing a change
“In Chicago, when we do see racial change, it’s an all or nothing thing. It goes from one extreme to another,” said Alden Loury, director of research and evaluation at the Metropolitan Planning Council. in how we were racially segregated. There are census tracts in Ashburn that went from majority White to majority Latino or Black literally in a 10- or 20-year period. That, I would say, is evidence that Ashburn is not integrated. In Chicago, when we do see racial change, it’s an all or nothing thing. It goes from one extreme to another. Then the question becomes: Is there a way to slow that down? If a community, like Ashburn, is able to maintain some type of racial balance for at least two decades, I would say then it has achieved some level of integration. How do Chicagoans view segregation now compared to decades prior? The challenges we’ve had with segregation are still there. We don’t see the marches or the vitriol and the drama and the emotion we used to see, but I would say the things that were kind of underlying that kind of reaction in the 1950s and 60s are still there. We are far more sophisticated, but we still are responding in the same ways we did then, just without the fanfare and, to some degree, without even openly recognizing that we are still operating in the same fashion, which I think is kind of dangerous. What do you think will happen in Ashburn—demographically and economically?
08 June 7 - 13, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
My guess would be that Ashburn will eventually stabilize as an African-American and Latino community. It may not, due to its racial composition, be seen or viewed as a middle-class community, but given the fact that it’s not flooded with rental properties, I don’t think there will be an influx of low-income renters. That’s not something that always holds, but if the families that have purchased property stay there, they will be fine. Now, the tricky part is will the community be able to maintain the commerce? There was an Ultra Foods that’s located at 87th and Kedzie right on the border of Ashburn and Evergreen Park that closed. If we see things like that happen, that becomes a drag on the community. If the middle-class families feel that they have to go farther and they’re in a food desert and Ashburn loses its luster in that way, that makes people want to pack up and leave. If we see the middle class flee the community, then I think the future could be questionable. Places like Auburn Gresham and Washington Heights went through the same kind of change in the ‘70s and ‘80s when Black middle-class families left Bronzeville and settled there. Those communities have much more rental properties than Ashburn and as more lower income African Americans moved into those communities, many of those middle-
class folks started to leave. Those neighborhoods saw a decline to some degree, particularly in the 1990s and 2000s. Even sections of Chatham, which is still in some sections a Black middle-class haven, have seen challenges due to the loss of its Black middle-class base. How does the story of Ashburn fit into the larger story of racial change in Chicago as a whole? I would say even if Ashburn does not exemplify integration, it should be held up as an example of a community where racial change was not a death sentence. The people who lived in Ashburn in 1990, when African American and Latino families were coming in, may have thought that that was some signal or some kind of bellwether for problems. Now, 20 years (soon to be 30 years) later, yes, the community changed, but it is still a safe and stable place to live. We don’t hear about shootings and robberies that we hear in other South Side areas—and the same thing can be said about Beverly and Morgan Park, and I think Ashburn can be added to that list. Even though it may not be a pillar of racial integration, it should be a lesson for us that demographic change is not one to fear or to flee. This report was published in collaboration with City Bureau, a Chicago-based journalism lab. www.chicagodefender.com
COMMENTARY
The Supreme Court and Voting Rights By Jessie Fields, M.D. Defender Guest Writer History shows that ideals are oft times contradicted in practice; there’s no greater example than in a democracy that held Blacks as slaves but was founded on the idea expressed in the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…”. Thus the highest court in the land has a mixed and complex history of rulings on issues of citizenship and voting rights, rulings that are influenced in unpredictable ways by social and political change in the country. One of the most fundamental changes in the country today is the fact that more and more Americans choose not to affiliate with either the Republi- Dr. Jessie Fields can or Democratic Party—44 percent of the American electorate are now independents. The most recent Supreme Court rulings in voting rights and redistricting cases raise new questions of how current Supreme Court decisions may be influenced by such contemporary developments. The path by which cases reach the Supreme Court and the progression of legal doctrine through court rulings is usually unseen except by lawyers and judges, but on the ground changes are carried into the courts. Supreme Court rulings reflect ongoing history in the country. The 1857 Supreme Court Dred Scott decision denied citizenship to Blacks, slave and free, and was an attempt to quiet the crisis over slavery and end the debates that would ultimately lead to the Civil War. The 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson “separate but equal” doctrine in which the Supreme Court upheld racial segregation remained the standard of American law until it was repudiated and declared unconstitutional in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall and other leading African American attorneys developed the strategy and litigation over decades that finally led to the Supreme Court declaring that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal and racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Whites Only Primaries One of the many cases Thurgood Marshall, a founder of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund who would later become the first African American Supreme Court Justice, argued was the 1944 case Smith v. Allwright challenging the Texas Democratic Party’s exclusion of African Americans from voting in its primary elections. Since the Democratic Primary determined the winner of most elections in the South, this practice effectively disenfranchised bBack voters. In his argument before the Supreme Court, Marshall stated, “We mainwww.chicagodefender.com
tain that the selection of candidates by a primary election pursuant to state statues is just as much a part of the elections machinery of the state as the actual election.” The Supreme Court outlawed the “Whites only primary” as unconstitutional. Today similarly closed party primaries disenfranchise independent voters of all colors. In 1962 a Supreme Court ruling in the case Baker v. Carr found that redistricting did fall under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment and helped establish the legal principal of one person one vote. These cases were long hard fought battles that gradually made their way to the Supreme Court in the context of a changing America and the Civil Rights movement. The denial of the right to vote based on race is unconstitutional. But the denial of the right to vote based on party affiliation or lack of party affiliation, though I and many believe it to be, has not yet been ruled unconstitutional. New voting rights and redistricting cases are coming before the Supreme Court. On May 15 the Supreme Court let stand a federal appeals court ruling striking down a North Carolina restrictive voter ID law that the appeals court said was written “with almost surgical precision” to disenfranchise African American voters. On the same day the Supreme Court rejected challenges to open primaries in Hawaii and Montana, leaving in place rulings by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholding these states open primaries in which voters do not have to be affiliated with a political party to vote in primary elections. In another case the Supreme Court struck down two of North Carolina’s majority Black Congressional Districts on the grounds that the districts were drawn based on race in a form of racial gerrymandering the court has ruled unconstitutional. This ruling is against the widespread practice by North Carolina and other states of packing African American voters into single districts that segregate Black communities and allows for the drawing of more numerous White dominated districts. An unusual coalition of Supreme Court Justices came together with Justice Elena Kagan, writing for the majority, joined in agreement by Justices Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen G. Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor. Chief Justice John
Roberts, Justices Samuel Alito and Anthony Kennedy dissented. (This case was argued before Justice Neil M. Gorsuch joined the court, therefore he did not participate in the decision.) The North Carolina NAACP brought the lawsuit against the practice of drawing district lines to concentrate Black voters in as few districts as possible, saying “racially biased ‘apartheid districts’ disenfranchise the power of the African American vote.” In 2013 in a reversal of long standing voting rights law, the Supreme Court, in Shelby County v. Holder, struck down the provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that mandated designated states and counties that had a history of racial discrimination in voting, had to receive preclearance from the Justice Department before making any changes in their voting procedures. Congress had continually reauthorized the Voting Rights Act without change and in 2006 had reauthorized the law for another 20 years. In the book “Give Us the Ballot” by Ari Berman, of this ruling he writes, “Shelby County lost in the district court and appeals court, but by the time the lawsuit reached the Supreme Court, the bipartisan consensus that supported the Voting Rights Act for nearly fifty years, including in 2006, had collapsed.” Voting Rights Act Even before the 2013 Shelby County decision, conservative justices on the Supreme Court had expressed their view
that past history of discrimination could not be used to justify the continued restrictions on the designated states. It fell to Congress to update the legislation. A Congress gridlocked in partisan battles has been blind to a changing electorate and the need to broaden primary voting beyond political party control. Recent judicial challenges to the closed partisan primary and partisan gerrymandering revolve around questions of whether a voting process is fair and equal for all voters. More such cases are on their way to the Supreme Court. One such case is a 2016 ruling by the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin that the State Legislature’s redrawing of State Assembly districts heavily favored the Republican Party and violated both the First Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment because it aimed to deprive Democratic voters of their right to be represented. What is the role of the Supreme Court at a time when partisan dysfunction and Republican and Democratic Party warfare threatens to engulf our democracy? Currently 50 percent of millennials in the United States, including in African American and Hispanic communities, identify as independents and are excluded from voting in most primary elections. The electorate is changing and there is substantial advocacy for judicial protection of equal voting rights for all voters including minorities, independents and young voters. Underlying the crisis in our democracy is the loss of faith of the American people in their government. It will take a continuous infusion of top to bottom nonpartisan reforms linked to the soul of American democracy built on activism, struggle and sacrifice. The Supreme Court can play a contributing role in the process of revitalizing our democracy on new and more inclusive grounds. Jessie Fields, M.D., is a Harlem-based physician and a member of the Board of Directors of Open Primaries, which advocates for open and nonpartisan primary systems.

Chicago Natives Larry Sims and Jermane Britton Take Over ‘Invite Only Cabo’ By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor In the world of reality television, there’s a new drama series on the block that has ears burning and tongues wagging. Bravo’s latest edition to the Sunday night primetime line-up is “Invite Only Cabo,” which rolls into its fifth episode this week. The show stars Chicago native and celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims, who invites four of his closest friends on an exclusive vacation in the luxury resort town of Los Cabos, Mexico. Midway into the season, we immediately connect with Sims’ friends and cast members—Kamani Alana, Bianca Banks, Agu Ukaogo, Emily Moses, Malaku Quisada and long-time friend and fellow Chicagoan Jermane Britton. A former dancer for some of the biggest recording artists in the business, Sims has grown to become one of the most sought-after hairstylists in the entertainment business. His client roster is impressive, styling Queen Latifah, Tracee Ellis Ross, Lupita Nyong’o, Kerry Washington, Mary J. Blige and Gabrielle Union. His crazy schedule has kept the Los Angeles transplant grinding non-stop for his high-profile clients and devoid of a real vacation in over five years. Invite Only Cabo gives the viewers a peek into the jet setter stylist’s private life. His friends come along for the experience—each with booming personalities and outspoken opinions, which can sometimes crash and burn within the tight-knit but luxurious mansion. “The reality of my life was responsive. People have so many opinions. People are arguing that I’m gay, saying it was fake and scripted, but the world doesn’t know I don’t do anything that
Larry Sims is fake. I don’t have to, I’m comfortable in my skin. I’m not hiding anything about who I am. It’s interesting to see the dynamic of conversation that is being had throughout the show. When people do podcasts and reviews that means that people are talking about it. I’m happy that they’re talking,” Sims says. Fellow cast member Jermane Britton agrees with Sims. The two have been friends for over two decades having met while Sims danced for notable House music singer Dajae and Britton worked for the singer’s record label Cajual Records in the 1990’s. “Larry kind of discovered me in a sense. I always knew I wanted to be in this world of business. Our friendship lit a fire in my career. I knew then, after watching him and being friends, that this is what I wanted to do,” Britton said. Similar to Sims, he moved away from Chicago. Britton relocated to New York City, working for dance music DJ and producer Roger Sanchez for a while—later taking a job as a personal assistant for then-married couple Nas and singer Kelis.

Jermane Britton Britton says, “I get to see how Larry is with somebody else with me currently being in the situation--now when I look at it, I’m inside of it. It’s really amazing to see ...” “At the beginning, when I was approached about the opportunity from the production company and Bravo—I thought to myself, ‘not only do I want to bring interesting, cool and dynamic people together, I want to infuse people who have good platforms’,” Sims said. “Bravo TV is the ‘best of the best’ in terms of networks. We have eight weeks on a primetime slot. I remember Gabrielle [Union] went to lunch with me and a few of the guys prior to the show coming on. She said, ‘Whatever you do, be prepared. Don’t allow this opportunity to come and go and you’re not ready. Set up your website, have a publicist, have a business plan if you’re selling or promoting things. Make sure you’re ready.’” Conflicts and Arguments With Sims at the center of the mixed feelings shared between him and friend, Bianca Banks, things get awkward. Bringing everyone together brought out various emotions. “It was an incredibly strange balance to be on a vacation with people that I’ve never gone on a vacation with. As long as I’ve known Jermane, we’ve never gone on a trip where it was just fun. We’ve never stayed with each other under one roof extensively and to re-introduce myself to my friendships with things I hadn’t done before,” he explains. “As far as things that were controversial
or honest or things I didn’t understand—I was the peacemaker. I tried to diffuse a lot of things. With grown folks under one roof, everyone is really ‘alpha’ and had their own opinions. I tried to make everyone see both sides of the coin.” The two haven’t always had it easy, both starting in Chicago—a market that is third in the nation but falls behind when trying to make it successfully in the entertainment world. They both come home for the holidays to visit family and friends. And the two understand that with success comes the responsibility of doing their best without regrets. Moving Beyond Chicago “Growing up in Chicago, I used to think it was so big and we did everything. Once I went to Japan or London and saw how other people were living doing business—I thought there’s so much more to the business than what I saw, heard and received,” said Britton. Having moved to Los Angeles in 1998—Sims went on tour with artists such as Missy Elliott—eventually becoming a personal assistant to the platinum singer and songwriter. He returned home a few years later to attend Pivot Point, earning his certification in cosmetology. Without looking back—he relocated back to L.A. to work with his friends in the business—as a hairstylist. Nearly 14 years later, he knows this was the best decision that created life-altering opportunities. “It’s difficult because when you’re in Chicago—it has a way of pulling you in. I grew up with people that have never left the West
Side—they barely go downtown. For me, being able to see the world through the eyes of performing allowed me to dream bigger than what my circumstances were. “Unfortunately, some people don’t have that. People become products of their environment. We become our parents, we become our grandparents, we become our siblings and cousins who are okay with having the regular job. They have families and kids to support,” Sims said. “You have to dream. You have to look at people that have made it—people like Jermane and I can inspire people to show them, ‘We’re from where you’re from and look at what we’ve accomplished in our lives.’” With the complexities of the series, Sims and Britton admit it is one of the few Bravo shows with a predominately African-American cast with an extended LGBTQ following. They are both comfortable with representing both communities when approached by fans. Britton reflects on advice Sims gave him prior to filming. “He said, ‘Don’t go on television and be something you’re not. Be who you are.’ The storm is starting to rain a little bit harder. I’m okay with it because I don’t believe God gives you something you can’t handle.” A free spirit with an electric personality, Sims’ easy-going nature attracts an abundance of friends and associates. “I’ll be 41 this year and I’m unapolegetic about who I am. I’m really proud of the things that I’ve accomplished in my life. I’m living my truth out loud. As you watch the season unfold, you’ll see my truth come out, louder and www.chicagodefender.com

It’s All Relative Northlight Theatre Presents RELATIVITY Written By Mark St. Germain Directed by BJ Jones May 11 – June 18, 2017 By Rick and Brenda McCain Defender Contributing Writers In the 20th century during the time of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, there was an explosion of scientific creativity and one of the greatest minds this world has ever known was born. On March 14, 1879, in a historical ter- Brenda and Rick McCain ritory called Württemberg, Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany. At the age of 42, he won the Nobel Prize for physics and immigrated to the U.S. in the following decade after being targeted by the Nazis. His name has become synonymous
www.chicagodefender.com
with the word “genius” and he was a man with insightful influence with regards to scientific research that garnered him the title “Poster Boy.” Known as a brilliant deep thinker who published four papers that changed the course of how we see modern physics, Einstein’s primary focus was work and not family because he felt it was a distraction and hindrance to achieving success. Einstein, the brilliant mastermind physicist who achieved pioneering research on how our universe functions and the man who invented the “Theory of Relativity,” is featured in an extraordinary play at the Northlight Theatre. Interestingly, in 1902 Albert Einstein had a baby daughter named Lieserl with Mileva Einstein; however, in 1904 her existence was gone like the chalk on the blackboard as though Einstein erased an equation. It was said that she contracted Scarlet Fever, which could cause brain damage, and to Einstein, a child who could not think was dead already and the slate of the baby girl named Lieserl was wiped clean like a miscalculated error. No one could have imagined Albert Einstein, the most influential physicist of the 20th century who developed the theory of
relativity, had a dark side. This iconic genius whose theories of relativity led to new ways of looking at time, space, matter, energy and gravity couldn’t comprehend the theory of the appreciation of life. He gave up before he understood that the theory of survival is mankind’s greatest achievement. But he was about to learn that even if you erase what you wrote on the blackboard, the elements of chalk are still in the air. “Relativity” Artistic Director BJ Jones introduces us to another side of the scientist-philosopher who knew just how to describe the human condition, except his own. Jones gives us a glimpse into Einstein’s world as the great professor, the father of innovation, the man who had many mistresses but a man whose greatest challenge of being a husband and a father might have been too tough an equation to prove. “Relativity” features a cast of three. Albert Einstein was masterfully played by 94-year-old Mike Nussaum, the godfather of acting (and we heard he does around 100 pushups every morning to stay in shape). Mike brought Albert Einstein to life not just because he looks like him with the ungroomed mane but also because of his delightful depiction of Albert Einstein’s quick witted humor. He even brings out the not so joyful Einstein when he can’t find his chalk or as he uncomfortably tries to explain the reason to his daughter’s disappearance.
Rounding out the ensemble are two lovely women who both deliver stellar performances in their own right without taking anything away from the star (Einstein). Katherine Keberlein (Margaret Harding) plays a reporter from the “Jewish Daily” whom Einstein agrees to do an interview with and invites her to his home office. This encounter begins an intellectual discord of conversation that will lead you to a conclusion as to Margaret’s true identity. Ann Whitney (Helen Dukas) plays Einstein’s assistant and caretaker who was one not to be messed with when it came to Einstein and his legacy. She was not in all of the scenes, but when she was, she commanded our attention with her hearty, compelling and convincing performance. We recommend that you go and see “Relativity.” You will be pleasantly Glücklich (happy) with how good this play will make you feel. After all, according to Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand.” The cast of “Relativity” includes: Mike Nussbaum (Albert Einstein) Katherine Keberlein (Margaret Harding) Ann Whitney (Helen Dukas).

IN THE MIXX
In the MIXX: Racism Rears Its Ugly Head, Another Chance the Rapper Music Fest? By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Chicago’s downtown nightlife is one of the engaging experiences of both visiting and residing in the city of “broad shoulders.” In the last two decades, we’ve seen a shift in various groups of individuals patronizing some of the higher-profiled restaurants and lounges in the River North and Gold Coast districts. More African Mary L. Datcher American and Latino partygoers have integrated into an area where White privileged patrons have dominated and protected the landscape. In the 1990’s, young Black promoters began to tip the scales by promoting events that featured Chicago-based athletes and celebrities with White-owned establishments that reluctantly welcomed them but eagerly raised bar guarantees on groups. In one of the most segregated cities in America, the unspoken code of party dwelling was for years reduced to a person’s neighborhood. If you were above a certain income bracket and welcomed in the exclusive nightspots because only the “hip” Blacks were allowed—then you would likely get a pass. A great deal has occurred since the days championship Chicago Bulls players would frequent the downtown clubs and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs or Jay-Z after parties were acceptable in the 42nd ward. As generations have changed, the big street ballers have slowed down and over the last five years—the incidents of violence have extended North of Roosevelt. The growing luxury resident apartment buildings taking over have also commanded more complaints to the alderman and police commander over the area district. Why do I bring this up? Last week, a very restricted dress code sign was circulated around social media, listing every wardrobe stereotype Bottled Blonde felt gave them the “right of refusal” into the River North restaurant. Mixed feelings were drudged up on both sides: some felt the sign was appropriate and the establishment had every right to post it; others felt it was racially targeting Blacks and Latinos— primarily men. This is a partial excerpt from the sign: No shearling/fur, leather, jean jackets or vests and no novelty sweaters. No jean shorts, and other shorts must be no longer than one inch past your knees. NO JORDANS, NIKE AIR MAX OR AIR FORCE ONES. No high tops, high socks or athletic sneakers (Chucks and Vans are allowed). No male jewelry (Chains are not allowed in the establishment.) No visible tattoos on neck, face or hands.
Hmmm...if you’re Black or Latino, the above wardrobe restrictions would account for 99.9 percent of someone we personally know or it could account for ourselves. In the winter time, a great deal of us will rock a fur coat or leather jacket, and what the hell does “novelty” sweaters mean? While other media outlets such as CBS Channel 2 reported on the incident, which led to other questionable concerns of Bottled Blonde’s license—this is regular practice by most downtown nightlife businesses. The major concern is this venue felt compelled and entitled to put their narrow-minded assessments in writing. Every time a group of Black men and women approach a venue, they are scrutinized by the doormen. It is insulting and at the same time acceptable by our community because we want to be “inclusive,” “validated” and “chosen.” It’s great to explore and support all types of businesses throughout our city, but it is vitally important to support the businesses that respect us—openly without malice and discrimination. Another Chance the Rapper Music Festival? We’re hearing the possibility of another Chance the Rapper produced festival taking place this September. This time, it won’t be at Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the White Sox, but at Washington Park. The SocialWorks team and AEG Live is gearing up for a “magnificent” outdoor festival on the South Side that is sure to draw thousands of young attendees. As the Obama Foundation prepares to break ground this Fall for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, expect Washington Park to be the new “hot bed” of music festivals for the next few years. One of the oldest and largest parks in the city borders Hyde Park, Woodlawn, and Bronzeville with great access to public transportation. 600Breezy Fighting Criminal Charges If you’re over 24 and not in the music business, then you may not know the infamous indie rap artist 600Breezy. The song went viral with over 4.4 million YouTube views, launching an entire new career for the father of two. Since then 600Breezy has recorded several joints including his recent single with Drake, “Lou Rawls.” We recently interviewed him at our Chicago Defender offices along with Know1Radio’s personality Que “Purple Girl” Johnson where he was gearing up to be a part of some Drake concert dates.
