City News STEM Innovation Leadership Academy Prepares Teen Girls

The Music Experience’s Dedry Jones Dies at 64

In an effort to empower young women and advance gender equality, the Exelon Foundation, with the UN Women HeForShe initiative, recently launched its inaugural STEM Innovation Leadership Academy for teen girls in Chicago. With only 15 percent of high school girls in the U.S. expressing interest in STEM majors or careers – compared with 40 percent of high school boys – the week-long immersive STEM Innovation Leadership Academy was designed to provide hands-on learning and mentorship opportunities. Nearly 50 high school girls participated in the program held at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Last week, Chicago music lovers were shocked to hear of the death of business owner and creator of The Experience Dedry Jones. Jones owned the South Side record store The Music Experience for almost 30 years; it was more than just a record store. Jones used it to create what he called “The Experience.” He interviewed artists about their Dedry Jones new projects and hosted a short show—a genius move that boasted sales at a critical time in the industry. His shows were later aired on PBS. Jones, 64, was found unresponsive in his home. A memorial service is planned for August 8 at the DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th Place, at 7 p.m. A pre-memorial repast will begin at 6 p.m.

NTA Elementary Parents and Activists File Injunction to Stop CPS from Closing a Top-Performing School Parents and activists suing Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for racial discrimination filed a preliminary injunction in circuit court today to force the district to freeze its plan for closing National Teachers Academy (NTA), a top-performing elementary school serving predominantly Black and low-income students in the Near South community. Elisabeth Greer, a named plaintiff in the lawsuit with two small children at NTA, said: “The decision to close NTA has already triggered some damage to our kids’ education. We hope that the court can recognize this reality and will grant an injunction in order to stop our beloved school from hemorrhaging further resources and staff.” Last month Greer joined three other

NTA mothers and two community organizations, Chicago United for Equity and Concerned Parents of NTA, in filing a lawsuit against CPS for violating the Illinois Civil Rights Act and the Illinois School Code. Attorneys with Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, LAF, and Eimer Stahl filed today’s motion for a preliminary injunction to stop any further action by CPS while the lawsuit proceeds in court. The complaint alleges that, in closing a Level 1+ school for the first time in its history, CPS’s actions have been discriminatory, unlawful, and arbitrary. If successful, the lawsuit against CPS will result in a permanent injunction, ordering the Board of Education to reverse their decision to close NTA.

Cover Story About Ronald Kitchen

From Northwestern University’s Bluhm Legal Clinic On Tuesday, July 7, 2009, 43-year-old Ronald Kitchen, who confessed under extreme physical duress to taking part in five murders 21 years ago, was exonerated and freed from prison. The confession was extracted by Detective Michael Kill, who worked under Commander Jon Burge. Kitchen spent 13 of his 21 years behind bars on death row. He was freed by Judge Paul Biebel, the presiding judge of the Criminal Division of the Cook County Circuit Court, after the Office of the Illinois Attorney General joined with attorneys from the Bluhm Legal Clinic at Northwestern University School of Law and the law firm of Baker & McKenzie to request dismissal of the charges. Biebel also freed Kitchen’s equally innocent co-defendant, Marvin Reeves, 50, who was represented by attorneys from Mayer Brown LLP. Kitchen’s conviction rested primarily on his confession, but also involved a jailhouse informant, Willie Williams, who has admitted that he lied when he testified that both Kitchen and Reeves had confessed the crime to him. The tortured confession implicated Reeves in the murders, although he had nothing to do with them. Both convictions rested in part on the failure of Cook County prosecutors to provide defense attorneys with evidence of benefits provided to Willie Williams in return for his testimony. Of 314 men and women sentenced to death under the current Illinois death penalty law, which was enacted in 1977, 20 have now been exonerated and released — an error rate of more than six percent. away. CD: Speaking of your mother, I bet your family is proud to have you home and able to tell your story. What would you like to say about your family at this moment? I want to thank my mom who was my number one soldier. When I came home she had dementia, so she didn’t know who I was. I also want to express gratitude towards my wife, my daughters, my uncle. I have so many people who have my back and pushed me forward. I’m so thankful. I have seen men get walked to their deaths, executed. I am a survivor and I could not have done it without my family.

a group started chanting outside the lounge’s windows: “From the Westside to the South! Black Caucus we’ll vote you out! Black Caucus we’ll vote you out!” The fiery and vocal group – predominantly Black and teenaged – met a police barricade with officers and their bicycles. The group had two banners; several teens blocked the entrance with one banner displaying “Which Side Are You On? #NoCopAcademy,” another group hoisted the second banner against Per.So.Na’s large glass windows – it was designed as a checklist that posed the question “Who does the Black Caucus Serve?” with “Rahm”, “CPD”, and “Black Youth” as individual checkable boxes.

Their presence drew the attention of Ald. Sawyer and Ald. Carrie Austin (34th), who both rushed to the front entrance to momentarily observe the protest. The Black city council members stood stoically, protected behind the police barricade, as the energetic #NoCopAcademy youth looked officers in the eye and continuously shouted their protest anthems. For over nine months, the #NoCopAcademy activists have been protesting against the city’s effort to build a $95 million police academy on Chicago’s West Side, a decision that all Black Caucus members voted for despite the pushback. #NoCopAcademy believes that a new police academy is unnecessary and the $95 million can prevent violence through the funding of community organizations, schools, and better public services. Unbeknownst to the politicians gazing at the scene, a grieving family was protesting with the youth. Hours earlier, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) publicly released the June 6th body cam video of a Black CPD officer fatally shooting 24-yearold Maurice Granton Jr. Granton Jr’s sisters stood with the #NoCopAcademy protestors looking for police accountability and answers from city council members in the wake of their tragic loss. Although the protest raged on, Black Caucus members continued to celebrate and mingle around the room. DJ Alan King’s blaring music muffled demonstrators, chants and songs. Ald. Austin started thanking guests, she was interrupted by a deep voice shouting “Mic check! Mic check!” “No Cop Academy!” “No Cop Academy!” “No Cop Academy!” screamed a young Black man. “Shut up!” retorted a visibly offended Austin. She continuously shouted “Bye!” as the lounge security aggressively grabbed the shouting man and pushed him out the door. Austin proceeded to thank those in the room as the attendees applauded the removal of the young man. “You know we’re here to have a good time,” said Austin. “If you want to protest, take it outside.” “They must not know we got some gangsters in here,” a smiling Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) added to keep the crowd in laughter. “If anybody else wanna protest, you better take it outside,” Austin said, laughing. “’Cause I guarantee you ain’t seen no gangsters like this City’s aldermen. I guarantee you that we can throw it down.” Ald. Sawyer announced that the event accumulated $100,000 in sponsorships and began thanking a long list of sponsors including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Teachers Union, SEIU, and Ariel Investments. Calling themselves ‘gangsters’ as they kicked out a young person the same day the footage of Maurice got released only added insult to injury. “ Mayor Rahm Emanuel did make an appearance after the protests ended, as well as Gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker. Emanuel received a warm welcome and emphasized the important victory of students receiving a full-day of Pre-K. The mayor also congratulat-

ed the council members on successfully passing legislation that renames Congress Parkway after historic journalist and anti-lynching pioneer Ida B. Wells-Barnett. The night’s protests captured media and onlookers, but it is difficult to tell if it will have any substantial impact on the City’s officials. Multiple alderpersons refused to comment on the youth demonstration. When asked about the disruption, Ald. Willie Cochran responded “What protest?” But it was Ald. Austin’s remark that could probably crystallize the sentiment of the Black elected officials of the evening: “Well I don’t think they understand what their protest’s about,” declared Austin. “You’re fighting against. Why can’t you fight for? We gotta’ learn to get into the fight for the benefit for all of us, not at the expense [of us].” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER


Community Police Reform Consent Decree Released By Deborah Bayliss Defender Contributing Writer As Chicago’s well-documented, high profile police shootings of African-American citizens continue to make news headlines, it remains to be seen whether or not a new consent decree aimed at reforming Chicago Police Department (CPD) policies and practices will bring the numbers down. A 2017 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation found Chicago police officers used force nearly 10 times more in incidents involving Black suspects than incidents involving White suspects. African-Americans were the subject of 80 percent of all police firearm uses and 81percent of all taser contact-stun uses between January 2011 and April 2016. Of incidents where use of force was used against a minor, 83 percent involved Black children and 14 percent involved Latino children during the same time-period, according to the report. The DOJ investigation into CPD and Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA was replaced with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability) practices was initiated following the release of a video showing White police officer Jason Van Dyke, fatally shooting Laquan McDonald, a Black teenager in 2014. Van Dyke’s trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 5. The aftermath of the video release included protests, murder charges against the involved officer, and the resignation of Chicago’s then police superintendent Garry McCarthy, who is currently running for mayor. The McDonald incident was widely viewed as the tipping point that ignited longstanding concerns about CPD officers’ use of force, and the City’s systems for detecting and correcting the unlawful use of force, according to language in the Justice Department Report. While it’s recognized that officers not only have a right to protect themselves and others from threats of harm, including deadly harm, it was found that CPD officers engaged in a pattern of force, including deadly force, something that is unreasonable, the report states. The report states further that this pattern is largely attributable to systemic deficiencies within CPD and the City and that CPD has not provided officers with adequate guidance to understand THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Lisa Madigan how and when they can use force and how to safely and effectively control and resolve encounters to reduce the need to use force. CPD, the DOJ report states, has also failed to hold officers accountable when they use force contrary to CPD policy or otherwise commit misconduct. This failure to hold officers accountable results in some officers remaining with CPD when they should have been relieved of their duties. Those officers often continue their misconduct including, at times, repeating the use of unreasonable deadly force, according to the investigation. The DOJ investigation also found that officers engage in “tactically unsound and unnecessary” foot pursuits that too often end with officers unreasonably shooting someone—including unarmed individuals, and that officers shoot at vehicles without justification and in contradiction to CPD policy. Officers also exhibit poor discipline when discharging their weapons and engage in tactics that endanger themselves and public safety. These actions include: failing to await backup when they safely could and should; using unsound tactics in approaching vehicles; and using their own vehicles in a manner that is dangerous.

Among the most egregious uses of deadly force were incidents where CPD officers shot at suspects who presented no immediate threat, the investigation found. Chicago has spent about $709 million on settlements for police misconduct cases, according to a recent report from the Action Center on Race & the Economy. On Friday, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson released the draft consent decree that requires enforceable police reform in policies, practices, training, and accountability mechanisms to address use of force, police accountability and discriminatory policing. “For decades, efforts to reform CPD have failed, resulting in a profound lack of trust between the police and the communities they serve,” Madigan said. “The consent decree will mandate reforms to ensure constitutional policing and, ultimately, make Chicago safer for residents and police officers.” The draft consent decree is the result of the lawsuit Madigan filed in August 2017 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against the City of Chicago www.chicagodefender.com

Madigan filed the lawsuit after the DOJ did not pursue a consent decree following its own investigation of CPD. “This agreement will help ensure Chicago police officers have the training, resources and support they need to do their difficult jobs and help rebuild the bonds of trust, respect and understanding between officers and the communities they serve,” Emanuel said. The draft consent decree will ultimately be a court order enforced by a federal judge. The judge will be assisted by an independent monitor, who will continually evaluate CPD’s progress to implement reforms required by the consent decree until the City and CPD achieve full and effective compliance. “Once finalized, CPD will work aggressively to implement the reforms embedded in the document, which will fundamentally enhance the Department,” Johnson said. “We look forward to working in the weeks ahead to select the independent monitor who will oversee this agreement.” Karen Sheley, Director of the Police Practices Project with the ACLU of Illinois, which filed a separate lawsuit, shared her thoughts

on the draft decree saying, “This is an important step in the long process of reform; but it is a draft that will need to be supplemented before being presented to the court. Today, the organizations who have sued to bring about reform, including the ACLU, have started to examine the draft to see whether it is designed to meet the needs of Chicago residents. There is no simple and quick fix and this document deserves our careful attention.” Sheley pointed out that the draft version does not require officers to record when they point a weapon at someone. Fifth Third Bank and JPMorgan Chase Join Forces to Support Entrepreneurs of Color By Katara Patton Defender Senior Editor Building on the success of the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund in Detroit, Fifth Third Bank and JPMorgan Chase recently announced an expansion of the fund’s model to support minority entrepreneurs in Chicago’s South and West Sides. This investment includes $4 million from JPMorgan Chase to provide minority entrepreneurs with critical access to capital, education and other resources. Fifth Third Bank will invest $2.5 million in the Entrepreneurs of Color Fund, pending regulatory approval, bringing total funding to $6.5 million in support of minority entrepreneurs in these Chicago neighborhoods. A 2016 study by the Institute for a Competitive Inner City shows that small businesses in Chicago’s neighborhoods provide nearly 70 percent of jobs. That same report also found that an increase of just over one job per existing small businesses could create enough employment opportunities to eliminate unemployment in these neighborhoods. Chicago was chosen for strategic reasons, according to Kala Gibson, head of business banking at Fifth Third. “Chicago will be our largest market…we wanted to double down on community and let them know we are aligned with the community.” The fund will help small businesses grow and in some cases start new business, Gibson explained to the Defender. It will be available to offer technical assistance as well as capital and access to information, which is just as important for the success of a business. JPMorgan Chase and Fifth Third are introducing a new model, according to Gibson. “When it comes to building [the] community, competition doesn’t work; it has to be collaboration,” he said. “We hope to show that one plus one can equal five; not just that one plus one equals two…and we need the local leadership involved, we can’t do it alone. Chicago Entrepreneurs of Color Fund According to data from the JPMorgan Chase Institute, the limited cash liquidity of small businesses threatens to limit the economic vibrancy of some Chicago neighborhoods on the South and West Sides. For example, businesses in the Englewood neighborhood have the smallest cash reserves, allowing for 5 or fewer cash buffer days, while businesses in Buena Park, on the North Side, have more than three times those cash reserves, with a buffer of at least 17 days should they face an unexpected cash shortfall.

Further, residents in Chicago’s South and West Side neighborhoods must travel greater distances to access everyday goods and services. In the South Shore and Pullman neighborhoods on the South Side, residents traveled 4.9 and 4.6 miles, respectively, from home for the typical purchase, while residents in the North Side’s West Ridge and North Park neighborhoods traveled 1.9 and 1.6 miles. The Chicago Entrepreneurs of Color Fund aims to provide $5.5 million in flexible capital to meet the needs of hundreds of minority-owned businesses, and encourage the revitalization of these and other underserved neighborhoods through commercial and small business development. This effort will help create jobs and increase revenues for local businesses. Through this initiative, Accion Chicago and LISC commit to assisting 1,000 entrepreneurs of color in need with a mix of capital, free technical assistance and coaching services. Accion Chicago and LISC focus on 15 communities on the South and West Sides, which are marked by segregation, high levels of intergenerational poverty and historically low levels of small business creation. Once the entrepreneurs are ready to apply for financing, Accion Chicago will use the investments from JPMorgan Chase and Fifth Third Bank to deploy loan capital up to $100,000, while LISC will provide loans between $100,000 and $500,000. Eligible entrepreneurs can be in the start-up stage of their business or existing, legacy businesses—allowing more businesses to stay local and invest in their neighborhoods. These entrepreneurs are typically unable to qualify for traditional loans, often due to previous credit challenges, limited financial collateral, short business history or informal businesses practices. In addition to the $5.5 million allocated for Accion Chicago and LISC, the announcement includes an additional $1 million investment for the Ascend 2020 program. The expanded funding will enable the University of Chicago and Northwestern University to assist an additional 70 small businesses. LP: What do you want the audience to walk away with after seeing “The Roommate”? Sandra: I want them to walk away with the realization that people over 40 are alive, vibrant and continuing their lives; and we continue to grow; that’s the first thing. The second is that although life can be hard and make you cry sometimes, life at our age is fun, sexy, so enjoy being alive. Sure, there will be times when you don’t want to cry, but living life brings you to that sometimes. That’s the journey of life. Ora: For me, the take away is that there is always an opportunity to be your best, but you can’t always be what people think you are or what they want you to be; however you are never more at your best than when you are following your desired pathway in life. I understand it’s hard to do. Something happens, and you get hurt, and then you don’t want to do it again, but like Sandra said, you’re alive, and you can find people who see you for who you are; so leave yourself open for these “Roommate” opportunities. Remember to always see yourself as a beautiful, vibrant human being who is capable of doing anything no matter what others say. I want them to walk away with www.chicagodefender.com

being who you are because being who you are is good enough. Yes, it is good enough! LP: There are a few scenes in the play that will tug at the soul and bring you to tears. Talk to us about the emotions needed to play those scenes. Ora: First of all, I will say that I am very grateful to Phylicia because she set an atmosphere that was so generous, and open to discuss any concerns. No one in that room was going to harass or tell you to get over it if you wanted to voice your opinions. She brought people in who were ready to listen to you, that made you feel so appreciated that I’m getting emotional right now reminiscing about it. They were so helpful in working with us as we learned the characters which really helped us to figure out how to trust someone or deal with feelings when that trust is broken. This was very valuable to the role of Robyn when she discovers what happens, when you know that the best thing to do if you genuinely love and care for that person is to leave them. That’s a tough thing to do and almost impossible, but it’s something you have to do when you realize that the relationship can’t continue without destroying both parties involved. Sandra: Well, who amongst us hasn’t lost someone? From the day you’re born, you’re going to have to face losing someone in your life. When I was in my twenties, I spent a lot of time with these nuns, and I remember Sister Carol said, you

know every goodbye is a preparation for the big goodbye; I never forgot that. From the time when you are a child, you are preparing yourself for that last goodbye, and those words and life itself helped me with the emotions needed in this play. It’s about human loss and how it hurts our hearts, and yet we still have the desire to open it to love, but there’s a price to pay, but that is the human story. LP: For our last question, tell us about the fun you had playing these characters? Ora: Let me say you will definitely have fun if you come to see “The Roommate” at the Steppenwolf Theatre. We are just a couple of wackadoos! Robyn, my character, acts like she’s got it together, and I’m not sure she does. It’s funny and yet endearing to see both ladies trying to figure each other out. There are some special moments in this play where the audience will be like, oh, I didn’t see that coming or they wouldn’t expect that these two women would be capable of doing these kinds of things and those shocking moments will bring out laughter. “The Roommate” is a play where you will experience a full range of emotions from joy, laughter, sadness and a little pain. It will stir up memories of life and make you think about what you would do if you had a second chance. We also celebrate National Lemon Meringue Pie Day, National Thrift Shop Corliss Garner Day, National Rum Day (coconut, please and thank you!) and National Girlfriends Day. It appears to be entirely possible to celebrate absolutely anything on any day you like. With that, I hereby declare today National Review My New Year’s Resolutions For The First Time This Year Day! Because let’s keep it real – we all created these amazing life changing goals on January 1st and haven’t thought about them since January 15th. And for sure our financial lives should be back on track by now, right? #SideEye We are more than halfway through 2018 and now is a good time to review your finances and any goals you set at the beginning

of the year. Did you start your savings or emergency fund program? Have you been consistently paying down debt? Did you increase your 401k or deferred compensation funding? How are you going to stay on track for the rest of the year? What will you do differently? How will you plan to achieve your goals? Do You Need A Financial Advisor? Short answer. Likely. A friend recently told me “Chile, I don’t have the kind of money that requires a financial advisor!” We went back and forth a bit, but I finally convinced her that you don’t have to be wealthy to work with an advisor. Also talk about what goals you’d like to accomplish. Buy a house in 5 years? Save for college expenses? Retire comfortably by age 60? Analyze and evaluate the client’s current financial status •The advisor will review your financial and non-financial information to identify your financial trends, any barriers to achieving goals and lift up your financial success thus far. Develop and present recommendations and alternatives •Your advisor will come to you with a financial roadmap based on the information provided. Recommendations may include funding a Roth IRA, shifting from tax deferred investments to taxable investments and/or reducing spending to boost retirement savings. Implement the recommenda-

tions •Your advisor can assist with implementing the recommendations. He/she may be authorized to sell investment or insurance products. Be sure to understand the compensation structure and call out any potential conflicts of interest. Work with an advisor who serves as a fiduciary and will act in your best interest as the client. Other recommendations could include drafting estate planning documents or implementing certain tax strategies. Your advisor can make recommendations to those professionals as well. Trump Didn’t Invent Racism! By Carl West 12 Voices A few weeks ago I witnessed CNN political correspondent attorney and CEO Angela Rye burst into tears as she attempted to address some of President Trump’s recent bigoted policies. Carl West Hosted by Don Lemon, the panel of three was discussing the five right-wing White nationalists running for political offices throughout several states whom Trump or his immediate circle has endorsed. They were also debating the 12-year-boy harassed by White residents and then handcuffed by law enforcement for selling lemonade. What was very telling about 14 August 1 - 7, 2018

Rye’s outburst was that she expressed this country has always been prejudiced. She stated that bigotry didn’t start once Donald Trump was elected President, even though he has made it OK to openly admit people’s racist tendencies under his leadership. She also chastised Democrats for acting as though Trump is the most disgusting bigot within the Republican Party. Rye stated that White folks, regardless of party affiliation, have never stop treating Black folks unfairly. She openly admitted that she’s frustrated, tired, and can’t believe that in the 21st century, this particular conversation continues to overload our society. Here is a snippet of Rye’s commentary that led up to her cable news break down: “I’m told every day I’m on air that I’m racist because I call out racism. That is maddening to me. And I’m crying about it because it’s crazy. It’s so frustrating. We’re supposed to be talking about a

12-year-old boy who just tried to deliver newspapers and the police arrested him in Ohio where Tamir Rice was killed. This is not OK for the future direction of this country. “I have a problem with the fact that we continue to make it seem like racism all of the sudden was discovered right with Donald Trump. That is not really the case. I remember when the ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ act came out. I remember when there was racism tied to the war on drugs with Ronald Reagan. I remember all of these things and what has happened over time, not just in the Republican Party. “Because the Democrats have blood on their hands too. We have allowed covert racism to surface and now it’s overt, that is all that is happening because for years we pretended like covert racism wasn’t really that thing. Now that thing has become volatile and angry and violent. We cannot continue to say that racism just surfaced. It’s been here. This country was www.chicagodefender.com

built on that.” I must admit that I was in total agreement with Rye’s courageous and tearful assertion. Her commentary even brought a few tears to my eyes. There was a White Republican woman on the panel who kept trying to explain Trump’s behavior as well as his alleged bigoted policies. She continued to express that what may appear to be racist policies will prove to actually be favorable to Black people. This sounded completely absurd. But as I began to consider what Rye was angrily expressing, White America has had a long history of bigotry! This is not about Republicans, only. Just as Rye asserted, Democrats have practiced racism and separatism equally as long as the right wing. Now they wanna act as though the left is in remorse and Blacks should look at Trump with disgust. To be honest, most see both parties as two in the same. Each party consists of

mainly White men who’ve inherited their forefather’s beliefs and a pronouncement that their race is superior. Why else have (some) White people conducted themselves in such a horrible manner across this country? For instance, as of late, we continue seeing signals of racist behavior from White residents calling cops on Black kids cutting grass, shoveling snow, crossing the street, bathing in their own swimming pools, or adult Hispanics wearing heritage t-shirts, as well as Black men sitting in coffee houses, etc. Therefore, Democrats (White and Blacks), stop acting as though President Trump invented racism! He again may have made it fashionable to wear bigoted insignias on their sleeves or visibly placed tattoos. But Donald is in a never-ending line of racist individuals showcasing appalling behavior long before he was eagerly elected CEO of the make-believe free world. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

WTT, XS Tennis Village Welcome Tennis Back To Chicago By Amber Anderson Sports by #TheBIGS Contributor When you think of Chicago’s reputation as a sports city, you think of the Bulls’ six championships with Michael Jordan, the 1985 Bears, the Blackhawk’s Stanley Cup run, and the 2016 Cubs breaking a 108-year curse to win it all. But those who are privy to the Chicago sports scene know it is much more than that. Chicago has always been a great place for sports other than your usual basketball, football, baseball or hockey to cultivate a new following, and this past Friday a sport broke new ground on its presence in the City. For the first time in 20 years (and the first time ever on the City’s South Side) professional tennis made a return to Chicago. World Team Tennis (WTT) brought some of tennis’ brightest stars to Chicago to host a private tennis clinic for local youth at XS Tennis Village, which is located in the Washington Park neighborhood on 53rd and State. culminated in a regular season match-up between WTT’s Philadelphia Freedoms led by 2017 US Open Champion Sloane Stephens and the Washington Kastles. In 2008 Chicago native Kamu Murray started the XS Tennis Foundation with the mission to reach and support Chicago’s underserved youth through tennis by making the game more accessible to them, and this night was its official introduction to the City. Students were given the opportunity to practice and learn from XS Tennis coaches and tennis legend Billie Jean King. They were also able to meet Philadelphia Freedoms players Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend. Townsend, a Chicago Native, gave her opinion on making the game of tennis more accessible to students specifically on the South Side of Chicago. She believes that XS Tennis is doing a great job at providing opportunities to students to have more access to the game. “It just gives people an opportunity to have access to the sport in a place that’s safe,

comfortable, and affordable.” When she is in Chicago, she is fully involved and active in the community. She takes the time to hit a few balls and host clinics for kids to be able to come in and improve their game. Townsend wants kids to stay inspired and to persevere through the obstacles that may come with playing the game of tennis. “It’s not all about winning and losing, it’s a community; it’s about finding you...finding out who you are.” Tennis is indeed making a big return to the City of Chicago. In addition to WTT’s event at the XS Tennis village, in September 2018, the City will be hosting the Laver Cup (September 21st-23rd) at the United Center. With the help of XS Tennis and the Lavar Cup coming to Chicago, the game of tennis has the chance to become more competitive and even more accessible to the people of Chicago, especially the youth, providing additional outlets for children to tap into talents and gifts yet undiscovered. www.chicagodefender.com

The Cubs front office has never been shy about making moves to put their squad in position to win in October, which is why no one should be surprised that after splitting a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Theo and crew announced a trade for veteran pitcher Cole Hamels. The move adds a much-needed arm to the starting rotation and officially starts the push towards the postseason for the North Siders. An Anthony Rizzo rbi single and an Albert Almora Jr rbi on an E5 cut the AZ lead to 6-3 in the bottom of 5th to spark a comeback. The Cubs got 1 more in the 6th after Schwarber scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4 AZ. David Bote came up clutch in the bottom of 9th with a 2-run bomb to tie the game at 6!
