The Legacy of John Sengstacke: How He Influenced Black America By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Once in a while we have the opportunity to witness greatness in our lifetime. Some of us are blessed to surround ourselves with people who exemplify acts of greatness everyday while others are challenged with the definition. Who determines how great a person is based on one’s interpretation? One may argue greatness is determined by a person’s deeds--bringing people together for a common good. As a small boy in the deep South of Savannah, Ga., a young John Sengstacke was surrounded by the family business and steered by his interest in his father’s local newspaper, the Woodville Times. His interest was immediately noticed by his uncle and founder of The Chicago Defender, Robert Abbott, who settled in Chicago after earning his law degree from Hampton Institute. From establishing the paper in 1905 to becoming a millionaire and one of the country’s leading publishers, Abbott was designing the blueprint that Sengstacke was destined to follow throughout his lifetime. Following in the footsteps of Robert Abbott, Sengstacke attended his uncle’s alma mater, Hampton Institute. During the summer, he worked at the Defender under the guidance of Abbott. When he graduated in 1934, he was offered a fulltime position at the Defender. To ensure a safe passage from down South to Chicago, Abbott recruited friend and activist Mary McLeod Bethune to travel with him. While on the train, Bethune and George Washington Carver schooled the college graduate on the responsibility he would carry in such an important role. A couple years later, his role progressed as Vice President and General Manager of The Robert S. Abbott Publishing Company. Sengstacke steadily gained the trust of Abbott. Recognizing how a collaborative effort by other Black-owned newspapers could be more powerful than an individual one on its own, on the day of Robert S. Abbott’s passing, Sengstacke brought together a group of the nation’s leading African-American newspaper publishers in 1940 to establish the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA). As a founding member, he would serve for seven terms—establishing more economic empowerment in advertisement for members around the country. Today, the NNPA remains one of the most influential organizations with nearly 200 Black-owned publications including The Chicago Defender. The power of the Defender reached beyond the urban cities of the North. As the Jim Crow South tightened its grip on

John Sengstacke and Robert S. Abbott Blacks, the paper was smuggled on trains by Pullman Porters traveling below the Mason-Dixon line. Many would wait patiently as bundles would be thrown over the railings through rural parts of Southern states—with news of jobs and a better quality of life in Northern cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland. People flocked in the thousands searching for a better life and a better way in urban cities, fueled by stories of prosperity and hope in the Defender. A Part of Change As the paper reported on various issues that hit at the core of our community, Sengstacke knew it was more than simply reporting the news—it was more important to become a part of the change. The Chicago Defender was at the frontline of shaping the narrative and Sengstacke knew firsthand his responsibility as a publisher to bring his input to Washington, D.C. His interaction with President Franklin D. Roosevelt influenced Black reporters to attend White House press conferences and he helped to open up more government jobs on a federal level to African

Americans. Applying that same diligence, Sengestacke would play a much bigger role for President Harry Truman, sitting on a special White House commission to integrate the military in 1949. Up until this time, Black servicemen fought courageously in both World War I and World War II sacrificing their lives for the same democracy and freedom that was denied on U.S. soil. Sengstacke was part of making sure the armed forces dismantled their segregation policies for African American citizens. Sengstacke also supported the efforts of integrating Major League Baseball in 1947 with Jackie Robinson’s becoming the first Black professional player, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Understanding the power of preserving Black newspapers, Sengstacke acquired the Michigan Chronicle (Detroit, Michigan) and the Tri-State Defender (Memphis, Tennessee) in the 1950’s—and he transitioned The Chicago Defender from a weekly to a daily paper. He believed that in order to keep up with other daily mainstream papers, the only way to compete continued on page 04

was to provide readers the paper on a daily basis. The Sengstacke Newspapers would go on to purchase the Pittsburgh Courier in 1966, reestablishing the historical paper as the New Pittsburgh Courier. A Family Man Establishing his legacy was not the purpose of Sengstacke’s mission as much as was his duty and responsibility as a family man. Married to Myrtle Elizabeth Picou-Sengstacke, the couple had three children: John H. Sengstacke III; Lewis W. Sengstacke and Robert A. Sengstacke. Maintaining the tradition of youth empowerment, Sengstacke continued his uncle’s mission as “protector of children” by establishing The Chicago Defender Charities in 1945—the producer of the Bud Billiken Parade. Since its inception in 1929 by Abbott, the day-long event has grown to become the largest African American parade in the U.S. and the second largest to Macy’s annual Christmas parade in New York City. Every second Saturday of August, the parade is the “beacon of light” for many youth and families who gather along Martin Luther King Drive cheering on their favorite high school bands, dance groups, community organizations and dignitaries. There are countless photographs of John H.H. Sengstacke throughout American historical archives as the quiet Black businessman rubbed elbows with many historical figures from every walk of life. But unless you’ve lived during an era that impacted the Civil Rights, arts and cultural movement—many would not understand the vital role Sengstacke played. Sengstacke’s Grand-nephew and Director of Development at The Chicago Defender Charities, Marc Sengstacke, reflects on his uncle’s influence. “One of the things that was the most amazing to me is when I was with him faceto-face and listened to him talk about the people he knew personally such as presidents, CEOs of major organizations and major politicians. As I heard him talk about that and I’m looking at him, something in me is saying, ‘Wait a minute, this is not some stranger talking about all of the powerful, rich famous people he knows—this is my uncle to whom I’m connected to by blood,’” says Marc Sengstacke. A ground-breaking move that has had an avalanche of positive results in helping millions of African Americans in the workplace was Sengstacke’s helping to shape the Affirmative Action law with Congressman Dawson in the 1940s. Appointed by John F. Kennedy, Sengstacke joined the National Alliance of Businessman. He would sit in on many meetings and offer his advice and guidance. It wasn’t until President John F. Kennedy’s administration when it was voted into law, but the publisher of the largest daily newspaper was never mentioned on his influence and work on this important piece of legislation. To illustrate Sengstacke’s influence, Marc Sengstacke recalls a conversation he had with Judge Benton Parsons, the first African American to serve as a Unit-

The president was asking him if he wanted to be appointed to this federal judgeship. Judge Parsons was telling us when he had this conversation with President Kennedy he was trying to figure out how to get out of the appointment. He was hesitant on taking it and mid-way into the conversation he says, ‘Mr. President there’s a gentleman by the name of John Sengstacke who I usually talk to before I make a major decision.’ The president says, ‘Oh is that right? Well, Mr. Sengstacke is sitting across the desk from me right now. Would you like to talk to him?’ President Kennedy handed the phone to Uncle John. Judge Parsons heard

Uncle John’s laugh. I could just hear that laugh because I heard it so many times,” says Sengstacke. From championing the integration of the military; becoming one of Hampton University benefactors; participating on several presidential committees from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Lyndon B. Johnson—John H.H. Sengstacke’s fingerprint has a lasting effect on African American’s successful journey. His countless contribution to preserving social services and amenities within Chicago’s Black community including raising $50 million for Provident Hospital (managed under Cook County Hospital, the health center, serving thousands of patients, still bears his name.) On May 28, 1997, Sengstacke died at 84. In 2007, Real Times Media, Inc. bought the family of publications the Sengstacke

family managed for nearly nine decades. Twenty years later, after the silent giant’s passing, his granddaughter and Executive Director for The Chicago Defender Charities, Myiti Sengstacke-Rice, shares fond memories of him and his love for their family’s Michigan retreat. “He would always call me ‘the boss’ and I would always call him ‘the boss boss’. That was our little thing. One of his favorite things to do—he would like to go out to the country. He would go and relax in Michigan—in an area called Buchanan. He would like to get away from the city. Those were some of my fondest memories of him,” she said. Pastor Bill Winston of Living Word Ministries became familiar with The Chicago Defender as a young boy when it was delivered to his home in Tuskegee, Ala. He was inspired by the shining examples of the achievements by African Americans. “John Sengstacke was like Booker T. Washington. He wanted to make an impact on the world by adding value. He knew it was not only persistence but also abilities that were needed to break through the wall of segregation and inequality,” Winston said. “The key for the African American community is not to lose the ground, or hope, that was gained through the huge contributions and accomplishments of leaders like John H.H. Sengstacke. It’s extremely important that this ground is not lost. Not lost in African American publishing. Not lost in aviation, with the decline in black pilots. Not lost with African American banks, as in recent times. Not lost with historically black colleges and universities.” John H.H. Sengstacke’s life is a reflection of hard work, tireless sacrifice and a love for Black people that is unrivaled to this day. From close ties to Chicago’s political powerhouse the Daley family to chronicling the city’s first Black mayor, Harold Washington, Sengstacke contributed to the narrative of Black history—American history. There lies the true definition of “greatness.” Harmony Health Plan, Inc., a Wellcare Company, will present the Defender Charities with a special gift in honor of John H.H. Sengstacke and his advocacy for healthcare in the Chicago community at Thursday’s special fundraiser. An unveiling of the Sengstacke suite will be in the legendary Chicago Defender 2400 S. BUSINESS

The Sun-Times Under New Leadership By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer A new day, a new dawn and a sigh of relief has washed over the employees at the Chicago Sun-Times as the sale of the paper bypassed media giant Tronc, Inc. The parent company of the Chicago Tribune, Tronc was the first to make a bid for the paper after it posted a fullpage ad in May. The Chicago Sun-Times has been in existence for 177 years and has survived challenging times as the demand for digital access and lay-offs over the years have added pressure to keep up with the demands of market changes in an industry that is led by followers, video blogs and social media impressions. The daily is one of the last physical newspapers that delivers hard-hitting news to the thousands of loyal subscribers often targeting less conservative and diverse readership. To witness another great institution fold into the growing monopoly of publications whose voices Edwin Eisendrath don’t necessarily reflect the city’s cultural make-up was considered tragic. So, Former 43rd Ward Alderman Edwin Eisendrath and a group of diverse investors formed ST Acquisition Holdings and purchased the second largest paper in the region. The daily was purchased for $1 but required additional funding valued at $11.2 million. The Chicago Reader is also part of the package deal. “I think it began like so many people. First off, it wasn’t just my idea. When I ran into the leadership of the Chicago Federation of Labor they were also interested in it and we came together on this,” Eisendrath said. “I can tell you how I came to it, but they may have a different answer on how they came to the decision. “For me, this was about thinking about our country and our democracy and knowing that we had two big presidential elections since Barack Obama was elected and now Trump. Americans were really voting for change.” The investor group of ST Acquisition Holdings purchase of Wrapports LLC, the Sun-Times parent company, includes several labor unions along with wealthy business people including attorney Len Goodman and real estate mogul Elzie Higginbottom. Eyebrows were raised by the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division on Tronc’s bid and promptly closed its investigation when the purchase was finalized by the new investors’ purchase on July 12. Eisendrath says “the group is not like your normal turnaround team.” He feels it reflects a

broad scope of Chicago’s economy. “It’s a real mix. We all came together because we love this city and we understand this city and we’re committed to it.” In the long tradition of Chicago’s news circuits, it is vital to bring more engagement to stimulate their interests. As he moves forward as the new CEO, he says “building a successful news organization for people who read the news” is essential to their survival and developing a new business model. The former HUD administrator references the Defender’s history as an example. “In its heyday, the Defender was all over parts of America; people trusted it to tell stories that no one else was going to tell. They would be true and the stories would be genuine and feel right. That was a really important time for the Defender and it meant a lot in the lives of Americans. It played a huge role in the migration patterns—that’s how powerful trust is in a news organization,” Eisendrath explains. In bringing together a collective group of individuals representing different interests—it can hopefully maintain the common voice of the working class. This presidential election has demonstrated how real news can be compromised—disrupting the trust of readers. “You’ve seen since then there’s a whole breakdown, we don’t really trust what they’re telling us about the world or about ourselves. I thought very hard about that. [I thought about] the struggles that everybody goes through every day, the hard work people endure in Chicago, what they go through to get to work in the snow, hot summer days and through the storms in order to get the job done,” said Eisendrath. “They see somebody pay for something their doing, taking credit for their work. They seem forgotten. Nobody notices it. These are the lives that most people lead. When they look at the news, it doesn’t feel genuine to them so there’s nothing to trust.” He admits with new ownership, there will be changes in order to survive and compete in how people receive and interpret news. “There’s diversity in our investment group. Mr. Higginbottom is one of our investors. It’s really important and it should be important to Chicago. That’s not happened before at a major paper like this. The chairman of my board, Jorge Ramirez, leads the board and he’s Latino. That hasn’t happened before,” he adds. “We know Chicago and I’m not sure that’s true of all of the news organizations in this city in the same way. We’re passionate about this and we’re really determined. This is our ‘north star’ making sure that our stories are genuine for the people of this city.”

Proactive Job Seeking: Keep One Foot In the Market By Gina B. Defender Guest Columnist As a recruiter, my job is to lure people who are presently employed into what will hopefully be a better opportunity. I spend my days talking to a lot of people who are ostensibly happy in their current roles. They tell me that they’re not looking, but I try to conGina B. vince them to at least listen to my five-minute intro--because you never know. The people who quickly shut me down have similar replies: “I’m happy in my current role,” “I’m going to be up for promotion within X months,” “I love working for my company.” Although my mission is to engage good talent, I always encourage anyone who is truly content with their position, career path, compensation and organization, to stay put because it’s rare when all of those planets align. But if there’s even one small area of hesitation, it’s prudent to keep one foot in the job market. Savvy candidates will say that they’re always looking and take at least a few minutes to listen when a recruiter calls. There are moments in your career when you see the writing on the wall. Maybe your company has been acquired and there’s a potential for a change in structure. It could be that you and your boss don’t agree on future direction. You might be ready for promotion, but there is no potential for upward mobility at your current company. Or perhaps your position is simply a bad fit. Whatever the case, you might reach a point where you have a strong suspicion that your current employment is not sustainable for the long haul. My advice? The very second you think that your role has an expiration date, get your resume and LinkedIn profile updated and start your job search immediately. The worst thing you can do is to let a bad career situation come to a head without having options. There is a lot of procrastination when starting a job search, but of course I’m here to help.

Reasons why you should ALWAYS stay in the job market: It’s MUCH easier to get a job while you’re employed. If you have a choice, do NOT quit your job before solidifying another position. Recruiters vet unemployed candidates much harder and there’s more strength in negotiation if you have a job. Loyalty isn’t often a two-way street. You might have a great deal of respect and loyalty for your current company, but you can bet that same company would not reciprocate when it’s time for lay-offs. Be loyal to people; not corporations. You always have your finger on the pulse. If you don’t entertain the job market for five years, you’ll never know how much your worth has increased or understand who might be looking for someone with your exact qualifications. Your resume is always ready to go. When a recruiter calls, he/ she wants your resume at that moment. In the week that it takes to update your resume, another candidate could take your place. Always be ready! You keep your chops up! When you stay in the game, you’re a better player. If you’re always having conversations with recruiters and companies, you’re far more accustomed to interviewing, and therefore more confident and successful. You strengthen your network. If a recruiter calls, you might not have an interest in the position, but someone in your circle might be a perfect fit. (Please note that you can either refer someone openly, where you encourage the recruiter to drop your name upon contact, or your referral can be confidential, if you don’t want your associate to know that you’ve submitted his/her name for consideration.) There are few things better than helping a friend or associate to progress his/her career. You will have solidified that relationship and made a new ally with a recruiter, who will always remember you. If you’ve gotten this far and intend to heed my advice to stay in the market, please, please, PLEASE make sure that you keep it to yourself. Don’t confide in your co-workers, and definitely don’t tell your boss. There is no need to discuss your passive exploration in the job market. Let it be your dirty little secret. Until you make your move. Gina B. is an executive search consultant and President/Chief Alchemist of Naturals by Gina B. She can be reached at ginab@naturalsbyginab.com. www.chicagodefender.com

Cook County’s Beverage Tax Hits More Than a Sweet Tooth

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer

Fathers like Darryl Lewis, a Chicago Defender Man of Excellence, knows the importance of connecting with his kids, daughter Dior and son Dorion. Andre Brown, founder of Englewood Dads, wants to help more men follow in Lewis’ footsteps.

Englewood Group Aims to Help Fathers Become Their Best By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Fathers in search of guidance, support, and understanding have a new, unique resource at their disposal in the form of Englewood Dads, a group based out of Children’s Home + Aid, 5958 S. Marshfield Ave. Launched earlier this year, Englewood Dads comes at a time when many fathers need assistance on multiple levels, according to Andre Brown, the program facilitator. Brown, a father of two daughters, 13 years old and 20 months old, learned through personal experience that the issues, questions, and situations he and many other fathers encounter are difficult to navigate especially without help. He told the Defender that once his relationship deteriorated with the mother of one his children, he found it became increasingly difficult to spend time with his child. “I thought to myself, ‘’what’s going on here, I am trying to do the right thing,’” said Brown. The Englewood native said he began to wonder why the issues he was fighting weren’t freely discussed, which prompted him to start his own consulting firm, Man Code Coaching, where he addresses the needs of African American fathers and men as a whole. He said through his time counseling, he began to have a greater self-awareness of his personal struggles and recognized a lot of men battle issues like a poor understanding of finances, feeling helpless, not being able to see their child/ children, and more. “My mission is to heal our community in whatever way I can,” said Brown. “[Some fathers] don’t know what to do so they go out and become self-destructive whether they become sexually promiscuous and not protect themselves, have a short fuse and become violent, whatever it is it stems from trauma and feeling helpless. I want to

be the voice for this because no one is speaking out on this.” Brown recognized that before he could work with fathers, he had to come face-to-face with his own preconceived notions over the stereotypes facing African-American fathers. “When I went to court and saw all of these Black men, I thought that was interesting; I never even realized that this happens, I always thought that when men, when they had kids, they run away,” said Brown. “Going through this process, I realized it was a really stressful process, there’s a lot of pain involved, a lot of frustration, and helplessness.” According to a 2013 report by The National Center for Health Statistics covered by The Los Angeles Times, African-American fathers are involved with the lives of their children as much as if not more than Whites and Latinos from birth to 18. Brown, who works with roughly 30 men, both in person and via social media/phone conversations, said during Englewood Dad meetings, the group discusses childhood trauma, the impact of fathers not being in homes, building better relationships with mothers, and more. He created the hashtag #TheElephantInTheRoom to bring attention to the unspoken need for help for men when dealing with issues as fathers. “The issue is that a lot of men are going through these issues with their families and children, but they don’t want anyone to know about their situation. They’re OK talking to me about it to get some type of feedback, but it’s such a hush-hush issue,” said Brown. Englewood Dads meetings are at 4:30-6 p.m. on Thursdays at Children’s Home + Aid, 5958 S. Marshfield Ave. Interested parties can connect with Brown via his social media accounts or give him a call at (773) 225-6455.

Cook County residents with a taste for sweet drinks will see a sharp reduction in their piggy banks beginning on Wednesday, August 2 when the Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax goes into effect.

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association sued the county to halt the tax from going into effect on July 1, which lead to a temporary restraining order. However, that order was lifted by Circuit Court Judge Daniel Kubasiak, who ruled to allow the tax to proceed on July 28, according to a report by The Chicago Tribune. According to the Sweetened Beverage Tax ordinance, the tax will impose a $0.01 per ounce fee on the purchase of all sweetened beverages contained within bottles and cans. The taxable drinks are: flavored water, pop, sports drinks, energy drinks, and pre-made sweetened coffee and tea with less than 50 percent milk content. Beverages excluded from the tax are: infant formula; milk, soy, rice or similar milk substitutes with a few exceptions; syrups and powders that can be used to create beverages; 100 percent natural fruit/vegetable juices; and weight reduction/therapeutic nutritional meal replacements. To view the Sweetened Beverage Tax ordinance summary visit: https://www.cookcountyil.gov/ service/sweetened-beverage-tax Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle submitted a letter to The Chicago Tribune addressing her position on the tax in late June. In the letter, Preckwinkle said the tax will remove the need for cuts to staffing in the county’s public health and public safety sectors. “I am not oblivious to the fact that this is not a popular tax. No tax is,” said Preckwinkle. “But I have pledged since December 2010 to run this government responsibly and transparently, to make tough decisions and to be accountable to our residents.” Opposition to the tax has been fierce as reactions have come in from all over. The Can the Tax Coalition, an initiative of more than a dozen organizations whose directive is to inform and educate area stakeholders, released the following statement:

“This tax hits

Cook County families with enormous price increases, places at risk 6,100 middle class jobs and $1.3 billion in economic activity, and will devastate our small businesses by sending shoppers to stores over the border. These are risks Cook County residents cannot afford and County commissioners should act immediately to repeal the beverage tax.”

Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin has repeatedly voiced his displeasure with the ordinance. He recently noted that the use of the tax is unfair to taxpayers and called for further reforms that would save hundreds of jobs.

“The County has a responsibility to its taxpayers to never again put them in the impossible position of having to choose between a regressive tax and essential, life-saving services,” said Boykin. “I continue to urge President Preckwinkle to call a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners next month to consider an emergency package of spending reductions and reforms.”

Boykin stated the county now has a new opportunity to change the way it does business. “The citizens of this County deserve better than a government that lurches from crisis to crisis, reaching into the taxpayer’s wallet every time an unanticipated challenge presents itself,” said Boykin. Meanwhile, the Illinois Public Health Institute and the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity applauded the judge’s ruling in a released statement.

“We are gratified that the judge rejected the unfounded arguments for a delay in implementing this optional tax that will benefit our county’s fiscal health and our communities’ physical well-being. The sooner people stop drinking sweetened beverages, the sooner we expect to see a decline in the chronic diseases caused by too much sugar.”

While not directly connected to sugary drinks, obesity in Illinois has been consistently on the rise. According to a 2016 report by “The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America,” Illinois’ adult obesity rate was listed at 30.8 percent, which represented a consistent increase from 2000 and 1990. Illinois was ranked the 18th state in the nation with the most obese people when the report was released. www.chicagodefender.com

Angela Rye: Making an Impact By Anta Njie Defender Contributing Writer

Global Youth Ambassadors Summit participants in Chicago City Chambers at last year’s event. The summit exposes girls to advocacy, leadership and activism.

Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Summit By Kennedy Horton Defender Contributing Writer The Second Annual Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Summit (GYALS) took place on July 22-29. Through the partnership of Chicago Sisters Cities International (CSCI) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), young girls ages 14-16, are empowered through workshops, presentations, and discussions on advocacy, leadership, and activism. Of the 25 girls that were selected through the competitive application process, nine are from Chicago, representing Albany Park, Brighton Park, Englewood, Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Little Village, the Loop, Ravenswood, and South Loop. The remaining 16 are from Chicago’s international sister cities. Over the week, the girls explored the city while hearing from a variety of different speakers in fields from STEM to Public Service to the arts, including Shelley Stern, the Director of Civic Engagement at Microsoft, and Shibani Mahtani, Midwest reporter for the Wall Street Journal. Besides Chicago, the girls came from 15 different countries: The United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Pakistan, France, China, Canada, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco, Ireland, Serbia, Colombia, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. “By bringing together these girls, we are facilitating a network of future leaders that will help shape a more tolerant and understanding world, says Leroy Allala, Internationwww.chicagodefender.com

al Executive Director of CSCI. “The Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Summit provides a unique opportunity for teenagers from Chicago and across the globe to share their culture and build relationships, while also empowering them to be leaders in their communities.” One of the main focal points of this educational forum was leadership. Speaking on the topic was Consul General of South Africa Vuyiswa Tulelo. Having her political awakening in high school, Tulelo held leadership positions in the Congress of South African Students and the African National Congress Youth League. She’s participated in programs for the youth of the World Summit, organized the World Student and Youth Festival in Africa (2010), spoke at a number of international conferences on Gender Equity and Youth Development. At the 2017 GYALS, she served as inspiration for many of the young girls in attendance. “That [Tulelo’s story] was very exciting,” says 15-year-old Antoinette Raggs of Kenwood Academy High School in Chicago, who hoped to one day hold a fundraiser to benefit Syrian refugees. “She told us her story on how she involved herself at such a young age. From her story, I learned how to keep going and never give up.” Cherish Ray, another 15-year-old student from Walter H. Dyett School for the Arts in Chicago and an avid writer of topics relatable to teenagers, agreed with this sentiment. “She [Tulelo] really inspired me,” she says. “It’s

really amazing for someone to have that big of a mindset.” Another big source of inspiration was a workshop with Global Girl, Inc., which is a performing arts/arts education organization on the South Side of Chicago that “provides a safe space where girls 8-18 learn communication, presentation and performance skills.” At the summit, they presented a workshop called “Our Stories on Stage,” a development workshop in which girls can talk about their issues and create a show aimed at those issues. The girls were educated on how to communicate in genuine ways as they used their voices in a creative light to promote social change. It really resonated with 15-year-old Laura Sastoque from Montessori British School in Bogota, Colombia, who thinks that the biggest problem in our world is lack of empathy. “They were really cool,” she began. “They didn’t let what other people thought about them influence their own thoughts on themselves. They were really alive.” Overall, the girls were most thrilled about all they could learn and being able to branch out of their communities, with thanksgiving in their hearts. “I’m excited about learning more about intersectional feminism and learning new skills in activism,” says Raggs. Ray continues, “The community I come from is mostly gang violence. Kids there don’t see new opportunities like this, so for me to be here is a really, really great experience for me. I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”

When discussing the political discourse that surrounds our country’s current political climate, one could only be a novice if they choose to overlook the verbal contributions and tangible work of Angela Rye. A political commentator for CNN, a political analyst for NPR (National Public Radio) and the former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rye has blazed a trail through the political arena for women of color--vying for truth, yearning for justice and demanding equality. Of- Angela Rye ten discussed amongst the likes of former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and renowned attorney Kamala Harris, Rye’s entry into the world of politics has been felt widespread and she has made all of her actions intentional. She works tirelessly to enhance the African-American community through economic empowerment, political awareness and civic engagement, and she succeeds with ease. Although most people’s strongest memory of Rye will come from her on-air debates with conservative Trump supporters and members of his party alike, her name rings bells beyond the realm of media and directly into the pool of policy. A graduate of University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law, Rye furthered her political prowess by cultivating IMPACT Strategies--a national political advocacy firm in Washington D.C. which works to translate the political process for all American citizens. Working with large scale corporations, smaller business entities and even individual people, IMPACT works to help our country’s citizenry understand the growing complexity of public policy and active involvement in the political process. IMPACT Strategies is not the first organization of its kind, as Washington D.C. is teeming with political advocacy firms. What makes Rye and the work of IMPACT unique, however, is that she ensures that the work of the organization is holistic. Reaching into communities of color for college-aged students, IMPACT hires interns yearly to introduce students who are interested in politics and policy to the fast-paced environment that is Washington D.C. Rye was recently honored for her vast endeavors in Chicago at the Rainbow Push Coalition’s annual Convention during its Women’s International Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago. Being honored alongside Massachusetts State Senator Elizabeth Warren and California State Representative Maxine Waters, Rye spoke to the audience about her commitment to truth telling and endorsing the agenda of the African-American community for as long as she has a platform. In a brief interview with Rye at the close of the luncheon, the Defender inquired about her stance on the work of Rainbow Push thus far and how important its existence is in furthering the Black political agenda: “I think Reverend Jackson has demonstrated over time the very important role that he continues to play. Rainbow Push continues to build bridges for leaders everywhere, creating opportunities for people in corporate spaces, civil rights spaces and otherwise. So I think it’s pretty clear what the impact is.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • August 2 - 8, 2017 09

The Morning Mixtape’s Mike Love and Lady Red: A Fresh Step in the Right Direction By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer In the third largest market where there’s nearly 80 Chicagoland radio stations, the competition can be brutal. Radio can make on-air personalities into overnight celebrities by positioning them into the right daypart slot. But we’ve witnessed major falls—some venturing to secondary markets picking up whatever shifts that gives them a temporary fix. Mike Love has seen it all and has survived the turmoil of being on various levels. A Milwaukee native, the Chicago implant rose up in the 1990s as one half of the popular on-air duo “Bad Boy Radio” on WGCI-FM by creating the signature “Birthday Line,” where callers competed to showcase their skills on their born day before Facebook and Twitter were even a thought. Their reign as the highest rated prime time slot ended in 2007, and Love continued to embrace what he loved the most—DJing. For the past three years, he has graced the airwaves of WSRB 106.3-FM from 2-6 p.m. as part of the introductory on-air line up, helping the station transition from a predominately brokered radio station to the familiar voice many had missed. With the departure of the longest running Urban syndicated morning show, The Tom Joyner Show—the station shocked listeners with its decision to drop the program from its line-up. In a strategic move to gain more local listeners and throw its hat in the morning show ratings game, WSRB made the announcement of replacing Joyner’s show with “The Morning Mixtape” featuring Mike Love. Soon after, popular karaoke personality and frequent guest host Lady Red was added as a permanent co-host of the show. “The idea was passed to me by Jay Alan, the Program Director. He told us we were to do a mix at the top of every hour. Initially, I thought that it’s different—it’s something I never heard of for the mornings. We rolled with it because they came to me with an opportunity to do mornings. We knew there would be mixes at the top of the hour. I came in with a list of names and hashtags and things that I wanted to tie in the show. The Morning Mixtape is one of the names within a bunch of things that I jotted down,” said Love. Since debuting June 5, Monday through Friday, the morning show offers a diverse combination of hot topics, listener feedback and a variety of mixes that cater to an audience that loves Lalah Hathaway with a dose of Nas. Growing up in the South Suburb of Markham, Red attended Thornwood High School. She went on to study accounting, a field she’s earned a living in for the last few years. Having a career in broadcast www.chicagodefender.com

The Morning Mixtape team: Mike Love and Lady Red. (Photo by Mary L. Datcher) was not in the cards. “Mike Love is the one that brought me into radio broadcasting. I wanted to learn how to DJ. That’s how I got into karaoke. At Club Mix, I shadowed the DJ when they hosted a karaoke night,” she said. Working as a bartender, she often began the show by singing the first song and eventually DJing. “I would play some music and back and forth and eventually it turned into ‘Crunk Karaoke.’ Mike Love came to one of the shows and asked me if I wanted to be on radio.” Immediately stepping to the plate, in 2007 she joined him on chiradio.com. “He gave me some pointers on how to talk and he basically ran the show. I was comfortable. I was on the big station for a week and fell in love with radio.” Love got his first dose of DJing by attending skate rink parties as an escape for most Black youth during the era of .45’s, tape decks and converse sneakers. “In our generation, skating rinks was our first opportunity to hear DJs. You heard the DJs mixing and blending records like New York did in the parks. While in other markets, it was always the radio stations coming out to the parks,” he said. “When I was in junior high school, I knew this was something I wanted to do to get into radio.

It was always a dream. After I graduated from high school, I got a job with WNOV860 AM. That was my first job doing the daily mix Monday through Friday in 1985. From there in 1988, I had a job doing weekend mixes on Milwaukee’s Hot 102.” There Love was given his first professional radio job by then Program Director Steve Hegwood. He said during his time there, Hegwood asked him if he wanted to be a “DJ for the rest of his life” or did he want to do more in this career? “So, I did the traffic—all the things Lady Red does now. It was just getting in where you fit in.” While he built his chops on the air as a radio personality, he also sharpened his skills as a DJ, spinning at local clubs and studying fellow DJ Reggie Brown. “Reggie Brown was also known as Dave Michaels on WGCI-FM, who was from Milwaukee. When I saw him get on the air, I knew it was possible for me. I would never forget he would get on the mic after me in the club. Reggie would grab the mic and his voice would boom throughout the entire spot and I wondered how did he do that?” says Love. “It’s really something I had to learn, which comes with years of practice and putting a mic in your face.” Both Love and Lady Red are very comfortable together bouncing off of each other’s personality. Love is laid back with

a clever sense of humor and perfect timing while Red comes with the “around the way” girl but playful sassiness. But, still finding her pace, Red admits the morning show role and now as the new host of The Basement show brings nervous anticipation. She smiles. “I’m a big energy person because I’m always positive and up there. I surround myself with people with positive energy. I go to church every Sunday and before I come in the studio, I pray about making this show great. I pray for everybody including Mike.” Looking over to him, she nudges him. “I’ve been inviting him to church for several years. He’s going to go one day.” Love shakes his head at his co-host and flashes his famous smile. It’s the same demeanor he shares with his students where he teaches Radio Broadcast classes at the Illinois Media School part-time. He remembers one of the important lessons he learned watching former colleague and broadcast legend. “One thing I learned from Doug Banks, he was so big as ‘Doug Banks’ yet he would let the people around him shine. If you were coming in no matter who you were, he didn’t have that ego. He understood the more the people around him shined—the better the show got.”

Ryan Henry and Van Johnson: VH-1’s “Black Ink Chicago” stars By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor The streets of Chicago are no joke when you are in “survival mode.” No one knows this better than South Side natives Ryan Henry and Van Johnson. Henry is the owner of 9Mag, a popular tattoo boutique in the Pilsen neighborhood, and shares the spotlight with his co-workers casted in VH1’s hit reality series “Black Ink Chicago.”

The longest running reality show based in Chicago, the show debuted its third season in early July. Both Henry and Johnson have been long-time friends sharing a bond that began when the two connected through the art of tattooing at a favorite barbershop hangout. One of the few Black tattoo artists making house calls, Johnson set up a temporary booth at the barbershop, working non-stop on neighborhood clients while Henry observed in fascination.

“My biggest influence came from Van [Johnson]. In 2008, I had just been laid off from my last job as a train conductor from Union Pacific. It was either go back to robbing, selling drugs or do something different. I had always been an artist. Van and I came up on the same side and would meet up at the same barber shop on 86th and Hermitage. Everybody used to go at that point; Van was tattooing for a month.” Finding refuge in tattooing, Johnson had found a legitimate way to provide for his family. He would come into the barbershop where clients could get tattoos. Henry said, “He was the only one tattooing in that area. Some of the people were coming and saying, ‘My man Van did this.’” Having lost his job, Henry was struggling to make end’s meet and did not want to fall into the bad habits of the streets. “I was at a point that I was broke. I got inspired by what he was doing. Van at that point was very cocky about it. People who was tatting in the beginning were very confident,” he said. Watching Johnson until the wee hours of the night, Henry studied him and listened to his stories of how he got started. Johnson graduated from Calumet High School and went on to attend Northern Illinois but soon found himself in trouble with the law. He was sent off to serve time at the DeKalb County Jail. His life began to shift, spending time inside the confines of the correctional system—he was determined not to succumb back to that life. While taking different odd jobs here and there, he entered a field that he rarely saw people who looked like him work in. “Even before I started to tattoo, it wasn’t that many known Black tattoo artists. I didn’t teach myself, I had a mentor who showed me how to become skilled. He taught me how to do folks,” he said. “It was a point at my life where I wanted to design clothes and shoes back in the day. That’s what I was doing for a certain period of time for about five years. Before that I was on a rocky path committing burglaries and other crime. That led me to doing something after I got a felony and it was hard to get a job—a stable job to take care of my family. I wanted to do something with my God-given ability and he gave me the notion to do tattoos.” Both men found themselves at a crossroads with deep choices to make. Determined to try his hand at tattooing, Henry borrowed the money from his sister to purchase

“Black Ink Chicago” cast members l-r: 9Mag owner Ryan Henry and Van Johnson (Photo by Mary L. Datcher) a tattoo kit. He recollects, “I asked my sister to give me the money to get it; she said only if I would do it ‘the right way.’ She died a week later and I promised her I would do this. I said I probably had never kept a promise on anything I’ve done so let me stick to doing this. I’ve been doing it ever since.” That family tragedy that gripped the Chicago news headlines for months involved the murder of his sister Nova and her baby daughter, both who were killed by her ex-boyfriend. Henry has kept that promise ever since. In 2014, 9Mag opened its doors catering to a select clientele of followers. Coming off the success of VH1’s “Black Ink New York,” producers secured the interest of Henry and his staff’s work environment and personal life on display for viewers to see. All of the 12 cast members’ lives have been dramatic; they have showcased life lessons to viewers as they maneuver through intricacies of friendships, love interests, career and important social issues, raising network ratings while building each cast member’s public profile. The cast which includes Kat, Phor, Don, Charmaine, Danielle, Ashley, Junior, Cobra, Nikki, and Neek with Henry at the helm and Johnson as a strong force with a loyal base. The show has helped everyone in their interests with Charmaine holding down an onair position as a radio personality at WGCI-FM. Phor’s music career is steadily building fans, and Van’s new fashion line, Chicago Illa, is being rocked out by celebrities. With all of the show’s success, the tattoo artists say the real success of 9Mag lies in the heart of customer service and providing a comfortable sanctuary for new and returning clients. Henry says, “When we started the shop, it was the fact we didn’t

want to be like every other shop. Some shops when you walk in, it’s wide open and there’s ten people being tattooed. There was nothing personal about it. Since we all were personal artists before that, we wanted to keep the feel because we respected the art more than a monetary transaction.” More importantly, “Black Ink Chicago” allows viewers an inside track into an authentic side of Chicago that steps outside of the mainstream media’s perception of violence and homicides. “People can decipher what is fake and what’s real. The world as a whole sees Chicago as oneside with the shootings and the killings, especially with us being from the South Side.” Henry says the show has shown him a reflection of himself as both a man and father. “We wanted to give them a level of something they can relate to. To see people from the South Side and from the street level, but we can also be Black business owners, men of God, we can be fathers—something that is actually going on here that isn’t covered,” said the father of two. In Season 2 of the show, there was real tension with both Henry and Johnson falling out and coming to physical blows, but before the sophomore season ended, they reconciled. Also a father, Johnson understands that “Black Ink Chicago” is more than just entertaining millions of viewers every week. “Watching myself in Season 1 to where I’m at now, I’ve always been downplayed. That made me stronger, it put me in the position to make me want to do more just for the television screen. If they’ll play me having to go to jail and having a daughter throughout the entire season, maybe ... I need to do more next season. It made me become stronger and a better castmate. This is an opportunity for everybody. You use this platform to grow.” www.chicagodefender.com

Illinois School Students May Suffer, Lolla Is Here By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Ouch! Gov. Bruce Rauner did exactly what Illinois House Democrats suspected—he issued an amendatory veto to Senate Bill 1 on Tuesday. In a storm of official statements from various state legislators and Democratic gubernatorial candidates blasting this latest Mary L. Datcher move on the political chess—I have one question? Why are you all surprised?! Rauner has been pretty blunt in his disapproval of signing off on both a school funding bill that provides CPS with both state budgeting and a state block grant of $250,000. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) doesn’t hold any punches landing them directly on Gov. Rauner and Mayor Rahm Emanuel. In an official statement, CTU said: “Governor 1% — Rahm’s public education mentor and the self-anointed patron saint of public schools — has the audacity to single out the largest school district in the state and reduce the amount of funding for our district, which is in desperate need.” To further the blow, the release ends with the following parting words: “Rauner should drop the charade of governing and provide Chicago’s students their fair share of funding, while Rahm should lead by example and pass real tax increment financing (TIF) reform and reinstate the corporate head tax. “The Black and Brown students used as backdrops in Rahm and Rauner’s campaign commercials and in their failed legal strategies deserve more than their political posturing.” Yep. They said it. Black and Brown students from low income households will be hit the hardest. So, while we’re in the middle of one of the most expensive gubernatorial races that will take place in Illinois—our babies are suffering. Between Rauner and Pritzker’s campaign dollars, that should help keep some teachers and faculty on staff along with preventing further budgets cut from the school rooms. Political Hiccups Cook County beverage tax officially kicks in on Wednesday. Damn, damn, damn! I’m dropping my good girlfriend Caryn Lee’s punchbowl. So, will those 300 county employees get their jobs back? I’m just saying. On Thursday, for a triple dose of hip hop, check out Migos, Wiz Khalifa on the Bud Light stage and Lil Uzi Vert closing out the night on the Pepsi stage. On Friday, hot picks include rock band Blink 182 on the Bud Light stage and DJ Snake on Perry’s stage—both acts close out the night. On Saturday night, Lolla headliner is Chicago’s own future mayor, Chance the Rapper on the Grant Park stage. Closing out Sunday is Big Sean on the Bud Light stage; local favorite female rapper Lil Yachty on the Tito’s Handmade Vodka stage, NoName and Rae Sremmurd on Pepsi’s stage, and EDM global DJ Zeds Dead on Perry’s stage. One of my favorite hidden hangout jewels is the Kidpalooza presented by Lifeway area where parents and adult guardians can bring their shorties for a separate music experience catered to little people from toddlers to 12 years old. Throughout

the festival’s duration, it’s a piece of heaven while kids can enjoy live music by the School of Rock, Q Brothers and other cool children-friendly performances. They also have activities including face painting, drumming and good ole fashion coloring. It’s a great spot to bring the family without missing your favorite bands. Check out Red Bull’s live stream of this year’s Lollapalooza Music Festival on chicagodefender.com throughout the weekend. It’s Bud Time!
