City News Inaugural Festival of Arts Awards to Celebrate Achievemments Africa International House USA, Inc. (AIH) recently announced that it will launch the inaugural African Festival of the Arts Awards to celebrate achievement across the African Diaspora. Set for August 11 at the David and Reva Logan Center on the University of Chicago campus, the event will recognize trailblazers from the U.S., Africa to the Caribbean.

The awardees include social, medical entrepreneurs, advocates, business leaders and rising leaders under 30. The event opens with a reception at 6:30 p.m. and the awards ceremony begins at 7:30.

The co-hosts for the event are Executive Producer Lotten Yeaney and Nigerian Nollywood actor Kenneth Okoli.

The inaugural awardees are: Luvvie Ajayi (Social Entrepreneur Award); Sally Nuamah, Ph.D. (Advocate Award), Lisa Maria Pope (Business Leader Award), Dr. Tunji Alausa and Dr. Jeff Sterling (Medical Entrepreneur Award), Ric Wilson (Under 30 Rising Star) and Sheila Okonji-Ashinze (Trail Blazer Award).

The evening will include an opening dance performance by Chicago Contemporary Dance Theater, a runway show, showcasing the progression of African fashion, a musical performance by Togolese artist Fredo Dadson, plus some surprises during the evening. This year’s event will be held during the four-day Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 – Sept. 3. On Sunday, September 2nd, Seun Kuti (son of activist Fela Kuti) and his Egypt 80 Band will bring their AfroBeat sound to Washington Park, and

Mr. Boombastic, the one and only Shaggy, will close out the festival on Monday.

Additionally, rap artist, and daughter of Blues legend Buddy Guy, “Shawnna,” will take the stage on September 1 and Ken Bedford will host “Steppin’ Under the Stars” on Friday August 31st. Keyshia Coles and Angela Winbush were just added to the line up.

The Festival opens from 1 p.m. – 10 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.

In 2008, Chicago native and singer/ actress Jennifer Hudson and her sister, Julia, created the Julian D. King Gift Foundation in loving memory of Julian, Julia’s late son and Jennifer’s nephew. The Foundation acts as a catalyst for change in children’s health, education and welfare and exists to provide stability, support and positive experiences for children of all backgrounds, so they are able to be productive, confident and happy adults.

Each year on August 14th, the Foundation commemorates Julian’s birthday with Hatch Day, where underserved youth in

Chicago are invited to pick up the school supplies they need to prepare for the upcoming school year. The event is named “Hatch Day” as this is what Julian called his birthday each year.

The doors will open at 10 a.m. and the event will continue until supplies run out.

Supplies will be given out at Saint Sabina Church, 1210 W 78th Place. Children must be present with parents, or parents must have a medical card with the child/ children names on it.

Back to Bud New Parade Leadership Gets Back to Basics

By Katara Patton Senior Editor One of the most anticipated days of the summer is approaching. The second Saturday in August has become known in Chicago as the day when neighbors sit out in lawn chairs along King Drive, barbecue pits are fired up on the South Side, kids run freely behind the barricades awaiting the South Shore Drill Team, the Jesse White tumblers, and the popular bands and dance teams that march down the street. Oh, and we can’t forget all of the elected officials and politicians who turn out in full force to greet everyone.

It’s Bud Billiken Parade day— and for the 89th year, the largest African American parade will roll on Saturday, August 11 from 39th Street South on King Drive toward Washington Park. As usual, the parade will culminate with a festival in the park. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. and the festival portion in the park continues from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. (or until ya’ll leave!)

This year, Myiti Sengstacke-Rice, the Chicago Defender Charities President and CEO, is also the parade chair for the first time. She is working with a new parade coordinator, Antoine Anderson, and a team to make the parade and festival another funfilled day celebrating Chicago’s community and students.

“This [Bud Billiken Parade and Festival] is one of the events that is rare,” Sengstacke-Rice told the Defender. “We don’t have anything else out there like this; this is the largest African American parade in the United States, and with all of the negative things we hear out there in the news, this is the one thing that feels good; it gets the family together and lets us support each other and celebrate each other.”

The parade was started for that very reason. Robert Sengstacke Abbott, founding publisher of the Chicago Defender, began the Bud Billiken Parade on August 11, 1929, to help kids get ready to return to school. Bud Billiken was a fictitious character Abbot created in 1927; Bud served as the protector of children and encouraged, inspired and promoted their interest in education.

Myiti Sengstacke-Rice tures the essence of Abbott’s goals: “Back to School, Back to Work, Back to Life, Back to Bud.” As always, the parade honors educational excellence. This year, 12-year-old Dorothy Jean Tillman is one of the honorary marshals who will be riding in the parade. Her story of graduating from college at age 12 continues to inspire young people to excel and do their best.

The Back to Work part of the theme will be carried out with a work force pavilion at the end-ofthe-parade festival in Washington Park. Plenty of information and resources will be available, such as information on interviewing skills, available jobs, as well as employers from different companies who may be able to assist in job searches. Sengstacke-Rice said, “We have so many great community partners and we wanted to showcase what else we are doing; we can support the students with book bag giveaways and get them ready for school, but at the same time what about the parents who need jobs? We have something for everyone. This is a multi-generational event.”

As for Back to Life, Sengstacke-Rice explained that means back to health and wellness so there will be a pavilion dedicated to providing information on taking better care of yourself at the festival.

And Back to Bud means getting back to the old school family reunion style of the annual day in Chicago, where people can reminisce about their childhood and how they enjoyed growing up looking forward to the Bud Billiken parade. It’s a time to bring out the grill and sit and have a great time—all while supporting positive parts of the African American experience.

Leadership for the parade is new this year, according to Sengstacke-Rice, who is the granddaughter of John H.H. Sengstacke (Abbott’s nephew, who became publisher of the Defender and several other Black newspapers after his uncle died). “We are looking to make it very organized…make it go smoothly. We have the support of the City and are working with them.”

There will be a senior tent where several elders have been invited to watch the parade near the viewing stand. If this goes well, more tents will be placed throughout the route in the future to give seniors a cooler place to enjoy the parade. The City also has several cooling stations throughout the route to make sure people stay healthy while watching the parade and enjoying the festival. The Prince Hall Masons of Bronzeville will volunteer along with many off duty and retired police officers.

And everyone always looks forward to the marshals. This year the official grand marshals are comedian and actor Deon Cole (“blackish”) and rapper Vic Mensa, both of whom have been big supporters of Chicago. The celebrity guest www.chicagodefender.com

Carrying on a Legacy “It is an honor to be able to carry on the vision and legacy of Robert Sengstacke Abbott,” Sengstacke-Rice said. “I don’t take it lightly and I am honored to be in this position and excited about it.

We decided to go back to where he (Abbott) was coming from and build from there. It is important to really respect the legacy and the past and look at where we are today and how we can create and build from it. Our slogan (for the Defender Charities, is inspired by, building on, and living out legacy… that’s what we are doing. I have a team that has bought into it (slogan and mission) and we work together and say how we can take what Abbott has envisioned and expand upon that.”

Sengstacke-Rice pointed out that Bud Billiken has always been about youth, and the Chicago Defender Charities works very hard to celebrate youth’s talent and academic excellence throughout the year. The foundation supports the dance teams, bands and participants by helping them raise money for uniforms and performances. Many people don’t realize the amount of money needed to participate on these teams and in the bands.

“People don’t understand what it costs,” Sengstacke-Rice said.

“You have dance practice, transportation, food…we work hard to support that.” She said the foundation also collaborates with the youth teams on mentoring and to encourage them to keep their grades up.

The Charities also supports youth through scholarships and other activities that enhance their education. Each year, the foundation gives more than $25,000 in scholarships.

Community Protestors Shut Down Lakeshore Drive, Call For Mayor’s Resignation

By Charles Preston Defender Contributing Writer Last week, Chicago’s North Side experienced a ghost from the past.

It’s the return of the famous (or infamous) “16 Shots and a Coverup” and “Resign Rahm” chants that permeated City Hall and Downtown Michigan Avenue in late 2015. Then, protestors called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s resignation in response to the release of the Laquan McDonald video and continuous protests for police accountability. On Thursday, August 2nd, Rev. Greg Livingston of New Hope Baptist Church, Tio Hardiman of the Violence Interrupters, and the Coalition for a New Chicago led a Lake Shore Drive shutdown to not only reinvigorate the demands for the mayor’s resignation, but to call on economic development as an answer to community and police violence.

“First and foremost, we’re standing up against excessive force and police brutality,” an impassioned Tio Hardiman explained before the protest. “Gun violence is still high in Chicago. We’ve had over 300 homicides and over 1,400 people have been shot. I’ve just found out that Arne Duncan has received over $90 million for violence prevention on the South Side of Chicago. Who made Arne Duncan a violence prevention expert?”

Hardiman made his speech before even more lives were taken by gun violence this weekend.

Hardiman’s call out of the former Secretary of Education of the Obama Administration is not unusual. Hardiman and his co-organizers believe that Black community leaders should spearhead efforts in addressing the City’s violence and should have a seat at every table that involves funds allocated to the issue.

“After this particular march, we would like to meet with the so-called ‘powers that be’ and see what we can do to redirect economic development to 79th Street, 16th and Lawndale, Madison and Pulaski, and the South Shore community,” says Hardiman. “We don’t even have a grocery store in the South Shore community. African-American people must take control of their communities.”

The march organizers met a couple hundred feet shy of Tescler Playground, about a block south of Belmont and Lake Shore Drive. Media vans and dozens of CPD officers (some on bikes) initially outnumbered demonstrators until organizations like the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR), Revolutionary Communist Party USA (RevCom), and Black Lives Matter Lake County arrived.

Organizers even bussed individuals from the South and West sides of the City to the event.

State Rep. La Shawn Ford, D-Chicago, made an appearance to support the Lake Shore Drive Shutdown but said that calls for Mayor Emanuel’s resignation are pointless. “When one hurts, we all hurt,” said Ford. “Elections are coming up in February. … but we shouldn’t waste our time THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Garbage trucks and city plows blocked traffic on Lake Shore Drive and forced motorists to take road detours for the evening.

Before taking Lake Shore Drive, Rev. Livingston, another vocal co-organizer of the action, gave a rousing speech.

“We have to come up to Wrigleyville and Lakeview because in disadvantaged neighborhoods the cries and complaints of the people are ignored and neglected,” shouted Livingston from a bullhorn. “But in better-off neighborhoods, the cries and complaints are attended to. So, we are coming to where they hear the cries and complaints of the people.”

Again, Livingston pointed out that the thrust of this protest is Black communities not receiving their fair share of resources.

“We know about the misallocation of money in this City. There is a half-billion dollars in HUD money that Rahm has been sitting on during his tenure.”

After protesting on Lake Shore Drive, the crowd of about 200 marched to Wrigley Field as fans were arriving for a Chicago Cubs game, disrupting traffic and drawing

perplexed faces from the North Side onlookers. Chicago police performed rolling street closures as the march progressed, constantly trying to be one step ahead of the demonstrators.

For about three hours, Hardiman and Livingston led a march that wasn’t peaceful but loud with surly chants, loud bullhorns, and thunderous drums. However, the march remained non-violent and within the confines of the law. No protestor was harmed or arrested.

So what’s next? Well, in a press release sent to media City-wide, Rev. Livingston alluded to more protests–perhaps, continuous civil disobedience–if Mayor Rahm Emanuel does not respond: “If Mayor Rahm Emanuel refuses to even listen to the needs of Chicago’s most vulnerable and neglected citizens - we will raise the heat and block the ingress & egress of Chicago’s airport traffic. We must challenge the Mayor’s arrogance with our hearts, our friends, possibly our votes and newly forged socio-political alliances.”

At press time, Hardiman released a statement saying he and Livingston were severing ties. Livingston reportedly wanted to plan another shut down on the Kennedy expressway over Labor Day weekend, which would impact travel to O’Hare.

Dropping Out and Lost Dreams

By Erica Aviles Defender Guest Writer About a third of high schoolers don’t graduate in Chicago, and I was almost one of them.

When I became a freshman, I couldn’t afford the bus passes to get to school Erica Aviles to attend classes, my grades started falling, I became depressed and my dreams disappeared in a sea of obstacles, can’ts and despair. My story is common. I’m the youngest of 7. Only two of us graduated.

At 6’2” basketball was my passion and my life. I was so skilled that one coach asked me to play with the boys. It was my passport

to college and a better life from the tough poverty we grew up in. I dreamed of the day I would make my mother proud. In those dreams I saw her hugging me as she proudly hung my high school diploma on the wall. She played basketball too and she was so excited when she talked about me going to college and being in the WNBA. The dream was never fulfilled.

We lacked the money to buy the bus passes to get to school and I missed classes. The poor attendance made it hard to keep up especially in math. Failing grades came next and soon I was kicked off the basketball team. I sunk deeper into frustration and hopelessness. I felt like a failure. The biggest pain for me was knowing I would let my mother down. I felt like a drop out. And finally, I did. I gave up and dropped out of school joining tens of thousands of other African American kids who

find their dreams sacrificed to the odds stacked against you if you are poor, Black and lost in the school system.

I do have a strong work ethic – the discipline of basketball. I got two retail jobs and started earning money to help my family. But I was miserable and I was afraid to even remember that I had goals of college and a different life. The emotions that kind of thinking produced were far too painful and depressing.

Then I received a lifeline in the Quantum Opportunities Program.

Tutoring helped me catch up. We get homework help and all of us in the program work together to help each other. My amazing mentor Tracy encouraged me to go back to school. She gave me the confidence that I could do it. I could still recover my dreams from the ashes of impossibility. I was given the bus passes that I needed and sometimes she drives me to school

herself. I remember looking at that simple little pass and thinking how it had caused so much turmoil and changed my life path. Tracy gets me through emotional struggles too, even coming to my house to help me work through personal issues and literally cry on her shoulder. I was introduced to a world outside of the often stifling confines of my neighborhood. They took us to movies, museums and other events that let us see there is a whole universe to explore. I used to think I had to do it all by myself but now I know there is help. We say “Quantum for life”and that makes me feel safe; I stumble, the support will always be there.

I’m still working one job and will get my diploma next year.

Yaaaaay! I feel my dreams coming back. I feel like I can do anything.

Hopefully I can still play ball. The season was over when I got back in school, but I would love to be an assistant coach or get a job with

the Chicago Bulls. If you’re listening Bulls, can I please get an internship? Most importantly it will put so much joy in my heart to see the smile on my mom’s face when I walk across that graduation stage because I know that her biggest dream is to see her children succeed.

When I look at the kids I grew up with, far too many of them could have achieved great things with a little help, but far too many left school, some even ending up in jail. I am one of the lucky ones.

A program extended a hand to help me get up when I was down.

I got it from here, but I would have been part of a sad statistic without that helping hand.

Back to School CHA’s Take Flight Trunk Party Prepares Students for Success Jayliyah Hicks got an early taste of college life this summer, participating in the Summer Bridge Program at the University of Michigan.

She left Chicago for Ann Arbor on June 23, and she’s taking three classes: English, math and a college prep course.

“I was very excited; I couldn’t wait to leave home,” Hicks said.

“But once my parents left and I settled in, I was crying for a whole week. It was a big difference. But once you start meeting people, it goes by quickly.”

Hicks was one of 175 college-bound students taking part in the 8th annual “Take Flight College Send-Off last week on the 9th floor Winter Garden of the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State Street. There were 60 schools represented as CHA students prepare to leave home and embark on college life, representing, among others, Howard Univer-

sity, Brown University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Grambling State University.

The giant trunk party was made possible thanks to support from BMO Harris and Comcast and was hosted by Springboard to Success, the nonprofit partner of CHA. Students received linens, towels and toiletries.

Hicks attended Kenwood Academy, where she graduated early and began earning college credits.

She is on a degree plan that includes cellular molecular biology for her bachelors and biomedical engineering for her masters, hoping that leads to a career as a medical doctor.

“My main focus is to research and find new cures and medical treatments,” she said. “There are a lot of medications that aren’t for certain people, where their choices are to either feel the side effects or not feel good. So I’d like

to do more personalized medicine, and travel to different countries to help them develop medical treatments.”

Meanwhile, Jocelyne Rico is looking to become the second college graduate in her family. She’ll have plenty of little ones watching her every move as she embarks on a new life. Rico, who will be leaving for Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., in a few days, said she hopes to be a role model. “It will be good for them to relate and have someone they can talk to about college,” she said.

Rico attended Hinsdale Adventist Academy, a private school in Hinsdale, IL. Her graduating class was 14 people. She knows it will be a big change when she goes to Andrews.

“I decided on a four-year college, so that people I know can push me,” she said. “What I liked about my class was that we all

Meanwhile, Hicks – a little more than one month into her college career – already has some insight for her fellow Take Flighters. She encourages her peers to engage in academic discussion and extra activities, to network with mentors,

teachers and advisors, since they will help find opportunities such as internships; and have an open mind and take courses unrelated to your expected major to get a more well-rounded experience.

“When I left, I wasn’t thinking so much about the transition as I was about school,” she said. “When I got here, I didn’t realize that you’re completely on your own. Mom’s not here to hold your hand or get your groceries. It’s not just going to school. It’s about being an adult.”

Ladarion will be attending Joliet Junior College this fall as a freshman. Seeing how college has enhanced the maturity level of his older sister and older brother motivates him to want to follow in their footsteps.

The website is a safe place for kids ages 9 to 12 to express themselves and discuss issues that impact their daily lives. Sara has had a serious concern for her peers, the emotional trauma they’ve experienced, and ways to handle that trauma. Sara Smile is a youth-led Chicago movement to help combat youth mental illness.

Sara’s mother Veronica states, “I am so proud of Sara’s leadership and willingness to tackle such an important issue like mental illness in Chicago among our kids. It’s a big deal, and Sara is starting an important conversation. Our kids need resources and support for their growing pains. That’s what Sara Smile is intended to do. This is a movement, and we need families to join us in understanding and combating youth mental illness and youth violence in our City.”

Setting limits on kid’s behavior doesn’t mean parents need to set limits on their feelings. Parents can also learn from this to model healthy emotional self-management by resisting their own little “tantrums” such as yelling. Instead, parents can take a time-out to calm themselves down as well.

“It’s a struggle teaching a kid how to cope with growing pains, especially when even as an adult you find yourself handling your growing pains! I usually do whatever it takes to uplift my kids and allow them to feel what they need

to feel,” Veronica says. “Kids have bad days, let them. The job of the parent is teaching your kids how to handle the emotions they feel.

This is the start of a healthy mental journey.”

Sara hopes that kids and parents everywhere are inspired and motivated to combat emotional intelligence through her platform.

“I hope kids are inspired to think more positively about the bad stuff they go through. Kids shouldn’t be embarrassed by having step-parents or bad hair days or stressing about school. Going through stuff is okay. It’s all about how you handle stuff, and I want to get better at that and teach my friends how to get better at that, “ she says.

On Sunday, August 26, Sara will have a back-to-school event, Sara Smile slime fest at Yorktown Mall, where kids can make slime and eat pizza. Kids from the ages of 9-12 are invited with their parents.

“Those rates are changing however, with the Mediterranean diet slowly going away with people in Barcelona starting to lean more toward the Western diet. My passion is cardiovascular disease prevention and education,” said Alexander.

culture, taking part in Latin dancing, Latin cuisine, hiking and exploration, outdoor yoga, mixing and mingling with the locals. She found that the language barrier was not an issue as English is very popular there. Lodging was done via apartment sharing between students rather than host families.

Barcelona was chosen because of the friendly nature of the people, world-class learning opportunities, great culture and history, and its excellent location for academic programming.

As for money to pay for the trip, Alexander was among ten UIC students awarded the U.S. State Department Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship to study abroad this summer.

Sponsored by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, The Gilman International Scholarship Program aims to diversify the group of students who study abroad. Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad program costs.

Family members chipped in to help pay for her flight, passport and meals, which she said she came to about $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. She also received a $1000 Pell Grant to help pay for the trip.

Chris Deegan, Executive Director of UIC’s Study Abroad program, explained that because a study abroad experience is as much a personal one as it is an academic one, UIC gravitates toward an “equitable” advising model based on balancing academic need with the student’s personal narrative.

“We believe this model ultimately enhances the student’s study abroad experience but also leads to higher retention and graduation rates,” Deegan said. “This has been demonstrated in several longitudinal studies at large state universities like UIC. The (studies) clearly show a higher percentage graduation rate for those who

study abroad versus those who do not.”

“Placed in the context that less than two percent of U.S. undergraduates study abroad at any time, those who do have a personal and resume enhancement that 98 percent of their peers do not have,” Deegan added.

As for how studying abroad benefits or is relevant to African American students, Deegan pointed to an article on the subject titled “Why African-Americans Should Study Abroad,” posted

by CEA Study Abroad (published Feb. 2018) --UIC’s academic consortium partner in Barcelona who helped put together the program in which Alexander participated. The article suggests the concept of studying abroad is to take domestic education to an international level, to learn and to contribute to the educational process in a foreign setting.

This, according to the article, becomes difficult when culturally different groups shy away from the challenge for a variety of reasons.

Obstacles to African-Americans studying abroad are often financial, with factors such as psychological roadblocks subconsciously created through environmental influence. If these barriers were overcome, many more African Americans students could show efforts to study abroad or hold interest in it, the article states.

The article pointed out that Black parents also tend to be leery about the destination and potential dangers that come with foreign nations due to their own limited or lack of experience traveling abroad and relying on overly exaggerated media coverage.

Additionally, studying abroad is not something college students are informed about before stepping foot onto a college campus. The

hope is that with influence from alumni, family, faculty and friends, studying abroad will become more common for African-American students, the article suggests.

Alexander’s grandmother and parents were very excited that she took advantage of the opportunity to study abroad.

Her father, Derwin Alexander, said, “I’m so proud of my daughter. Not only for her getting to do a semester abroad but for her success and accomplishments as a student and an intelligent young woman. “ Alexander said she will continue to encourage young people to study abroad.

When asked if the experience has her considering living abroad after college, especially given all the racial tension in the U.S. and the high crime in Chicago, Alexander said, “I feel Chicago needs a lot of support. Too many people move away so I want to stay to help support the City.”

from Chicago. These stats come from a report produced by the University of Cincinnati Economics Center. Needless to say, Black Chicago contributes mightily to Cincinnati’s local economy – as well as to northern Kentucky – every July. Each attendee spends on average $692 for food, lodging and retail during the festival. How many, though, of these valuable economic dollars are spent with African American merchants in the area? While the festival does a decent job of having some African American food vendors and other merchants front and center outside of Paul Brown Stadium for festival-goers to patronize, there is so much more we can do to support the Black economic infrastructure of Cincinnati during festival weekend.

According to lifelong Cincinnati resident Danielle Henderson who is co-owner of Granny’s Soul Kitchen, to become a vendor at the Cincinnati Music Festival is expensive, and some small business owners just cannot afford it. To support more blackowned businesses, Ms. Henderson suggests traveling away from the downtown area and going to the West End section of Cincinnati, which is only ten minutes away.

She also shared with us, “We always know the people from Chicago when the festival is taking place. They are always dressed in white. The people from Chicago always come in droves and my business benefits every year, and I am very grateful. The West End Metropolitan area is as safe as downtown Cincinnati, so people should come on over and check out some of the services we have to offer.”

They were united in their love for Michael, but when a White boy moves into the neighborhood and tries to join the club, the unspoken rules are questioned and the dynamics of the group begins to change.

This parody about the dos and don’ts of Blackness, hero worship and American identity strikes a chord in the present day theatrical play and what is accepted becomes unacceptable as one person’s family life begins to un-

ravel. Defacing Michael Jackson explores the intricacies of life in 1984 as interracial conflicts seen through the eyes of four youth; varying in race, gender and mental stability all while trying to get enough money to have a mural of their musical idol commissioned.

Director Alexis J. Roston brings Aurin’s vision of evoking a community to life on a small stage with four actors delving into uncharted waters. Obadiah played by Chris Taylor does an excellent job narrating the storyline by infusing the highlights of Michael Jackson’s life while telling the story of their own lives.

Frenchy, the only girl in the play, is the biggest die-hard fan ever of Michael Jackson, is played by Jo Jo Pender who is determined to keep the fan club all Black so that their community can have something of their own. Then there’s Eldridge Shannon III who plays a dual role of mentally challenged twin brothers Yellow and Red. Jack, the unwanted member who comes to the community performed by Samuel Martin, is trying to fit in and under-

“Defacing Michael Jackson” is a delightful play, and anyone that loves Michael will enjoy the acting and the music. There are a few scenes that added little value to the play and writer Squire and Director Alexis J. Roston could have eliminated, like the “You so ugly” dialogue to make this two hour play a little shorter. However, it was entertaining to reminisce over life in the 80s.

Scholarships and Honors Former television executive producer Tenisha Taylor Bell hosted the 2nd Annual Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation (ETSF) Gala and Fundraiser held at the Hilton Hotel Chicago Oak Lawn. ETSF awarded 18 college scholarships to male students from Chicago. ETSF provides scholarships, mentorship and life skills workshops to African-American male students impacted by Chicago’s gun violence. The foundation is named after Bell’s father who was killed on the South Side of Chicago. Actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges is one of her strong supporters. Tenisha currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ed Lover Is Now On Radio in Chicago

By Renee Matthews Defender Guest Writer Old school rap and hip hop lovers— and perhaps some new school folk—recognize the voice of Ed Lover on the New 104.3 JAMS. The throwback station, which launched in late 2017, operated for months with no DJs at all. But earlier this year, the station debuted “The Ed Lover Morning Show.” Lover is best known as one of the original hosts of “Yo! MTV Raps,” which was one of the first shows that aired rap videos on MTV. Lover first appeared on “Yo! MTV Raps” in 1989. “Yo! MTV Raps” was also the first show on MTV to air interviews with the artists. His career, as plotted on his website, has been filled with spots at stations across the country.

“I got my start in hip-hop as one of the original hosts of ‘Yo! MTV Raps!,’ internationalizing and establishing the now iconic hip-hop genre around the globe. Following the exit of “Yo!”, I dived into the world of radio beginning at Hot 97 in New York from 1993 to 1997. After sowing my radio seeds in New York, I caught the West Coast itch and moved to LA to host afternoons on 92.3 The Beat. Once that itch was scratched, I finessed my way back to New York in 2001 to reap what I sowed in the 90s; I was an original on-air talent and disc jockey of the alternative hip-hop and R&B station - Power 105 - now home to ‘The Breakfast Club’ and Angie Martinez. When the syndicated show ended Lover’s manager put in a call to 104.3 JAMS to see about adding “The Weekend Blast with Ed Lover” (a countdown show with celebrity interviews and his infamous C’mon Son segments in 30 cities around the country) to their lineup. This new station in Chicago inquired was he available for a morning show in Chicago and the rest is history. Lover moved to Chicago in April right before his first airdate.

The Ed Lover Morning Show is on M-F 5:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. on 104.3 JAMS FM here in Chicago or on Radio.com app on your device. Ed and his co-host Jen BT and Executive Producer Krista Hayes bring us great conversation as well as our favorite Hip Hop and R&B throwbacks. Lover has set his goals for his show to be the #1 show in the City. He states how “throwbacks now are what our parents had when they listened to Motown.” He hopes that people will grow to like him and get accustomed to him being on the radio daily.

Also he has already been spotted in the community doing volunteer work as well as getting out to meet as many of the listeners as possible by attending events in and around the City. He is committed to helping grow this new station and his new show. When asked about his Chicago favorites, he said it is too soon for him to state just yet. I know he has been spotted at a Cubs game, Bulls game and Ravinia.

The people are definitely showing him love everywhere he goes.

By Katara Patton Senior Editor Again Donald Trump’s tweets have made news. Now it is his attack on our brother Lebron James (yes, Chicago we can call him a brother after his latest headlines despite who we think is the greatest!)

Last week, CNN Anchor Don Lemon inKatara Patton terviewed James and toured the phenomenal I Promise school the now LA Lakers baller has opened and funded in Akron, Ohio.

For a minute, we have debated who is the G.O.A.T. (admittedly I looked this up a few weeks ago; it stands for the Greatest of All Time) and we have definitely had some thoughts (we do live in the land of the two-time 3-peaters also known as the Jordan, Pippen and more show). But now I must say Mr. James has fljpped this conversation and he has us all (okay, most of us) tipping our hats to his achievements.

The school looks like a breath of fresh air, a place that will hopefully embrace our little Black and Brown kids and let them know the sky is the limit and when you get a solid education, you can change the trajectory of your life.

And since I’m a practical realist, I can’t just let this great idea by James go without posing a question to all of the adoring fans saluting him. In light of our brother’s great deed to contribute in such a meaningful way to our youth, what is your contribution?

No one expects you to build a school unless you got Oprah or Lebron money, but can you buy school supplies? As a mom of a rising 3rd grader, I am shocked every year as I try to attain supplies on that ever growing list. And every year, I’ve witnessed teachers have to scurry up supplies for those who do not have them or when they run out at the end of the year.

The next time you’re in the store, pick up some folders, pencils and notebooks and hand them to a kid, or donate to one of the many giveaways, or better yet, hand a bag full to a teacher.

Buy a uniform (I know every day people who have organized uniform drives, ie Marissa Warren, a mom who knows the cost of keeping the kids uniform ready!) These kids need shoes (they grow like weeds) and coats (last year’s might not fit or is too worn). My husband receives the sweetest notes each year from students after he’s made a donation to their class.

You don’t have money? A smile when you see the kids walking to school just might help; ask them how is school. Talk to them; let them know you’re routing for them; you care. It can go a long way and make a difference.

As we celebrate the spirit of the Bud Billiken Parade and Festival this week, let’s remember why the real Bud was even created—to support, inspire and encourage our kids to make education a priority.

Let’s continue (and in some cases pick up) the spirit of Robert Sengstacke Abbot and give our students encouragement and help them get excited about school.

Like James and Abbott, we can do our part to contribute to greatness.

For those in the know, the September Issue is THE most important issue of Vogue each year, baSheri Flanders sically a giant phone book (Google it, kids) of the most stunning, avant-garde glossy high-fashion photos to catch my tears each morning before work as I pull on yet another sensible Ann Taylor Loft cardigan.

Non-fashionistas: please feel free to take the next five minutes to watch football, eat paste or whatever it is that Muggles do while the rest of us geek out over stilettos.

SOURCES HAVE RUMORED that Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and notorious control freak, who was reportedly the inspiration for the,“Bee-with-anitch” character Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, played by the impeccably glamorous Meryl Streep, has allowed Beyonce full control over the cover and other aspects of the issue.

(Sometimes I wonder if Anna Wintour is grateful that she was portrayed by someone as stunning as Meryl Streep?

I don’t mean that as a dig on Anna Wintour’s looks – for the record, looks-wise Anna Wintour is basically the White version of me in twenty years if I had no melanin, a tweed boxy blazer and oversized pearls, her expensive bobbed wig that somehow looks more fake than my sewin, and enough F-U money to back up my shady attitude.)

YET I DIGRESS. Back to Queen Bey. Bey has reportedly tapped Black photographer Tyler Mitchell to shoot the issue. Mitchell would be the FIRST Black photographer in the magazine’s 126-year history.

SIDEBAR – How terrible is your company if you can go 126 years without even hiring one token POC to even try to pretend not to be racist af?

SECOND SIDEBAR – I am a recovering token POC fashion designer and I know EXACTLY how terrible a company can be.

OTHER SOURCES (seriously, who tf are these sources?) familiar with Vogues editorial process have confirmed that Wintour never would have chosen a photographer without “traditional” fashion experience like Mitchell. So BIG PROPS TO BEYONCE for using her platform and glow to give Mitchell a chance that he certainly has earned by his talents and hard work, yet likely never would have been granted in all-White closed systems of nepotism.

In December, Mitchell told the New York Times “I depict Black people and people of color in a really real and pure way,” which is shorthand for I SWEAR TO GAWD THAT THE BLACK MODELS WILL NOT LOOK JACKED UP. The politics of Black women’s hair is COMP-LI-CAT-ED, fraught with respectability politics and other such nonsense.

When trust is placed in the hands of the wrong photographer, things go awry quickly, such as in the case of a particular JCrew Black model’s hairstyle.

Bey will TEND TO those Black models. Their hair will be laid-for-the-gods.

They will be lovingly groomed by a team of hairstylists armed with angel tears, rose petals, bonnets, edge control, shea butter, Eco Styler, and Pink Lotion.

High fashion is a FANTASY and my personal hair fantasy is a Dora Milaje fade or any style Angela Bassett ever rocked, not the struggle ponytail I snatch back when I’m headed to the gym in holey sweatpants.

Now, the industry of high-fashion is EXTREMELY problematic, even for die-hard fans. Fashion is racist, ageist, ‘sizeist’, sexist and pretty much any other “ist” you can think up. I enjoy fashion for the same reason kids play dress-up in their parent’s clothes: playing dress-up is hella fun. Yet, just like a toddler shouldn’t be shamed for walking around in his mama’s shoes, no one should feel shame when opening up a fashion rag to escape into a world of fantasy.

But what if there were a solution….?!?!?

FURTHER SOURCES HAVE RUMORED that Anna Wintour is preparing to retire. Now, I’m going to crawl out all the way to the end of a long, fragile limb and speculate… but – what if……?

WHAT IF BEYONCE BECAME THE EDITOR IN CHIEF OF VOGUE? Look, I’m jussayin, she has a family now! Maybe she wants to kick back, put on some stretchy pants and tour less! Bey is 36 years old, and though she is obvs WAY more in shape and eats less Cheetos than moi, 36 is approximately the age when one’s knees start to lose their ability to drop it like it’s hot 17 times in a row without serious repercussions the next day.

Or so I have heard.

I’m jussayin that mama might want a desk job where she can breastfeed on a cerulean velvet chaise lounge while her assistant fetches her organic kombuchas.

I’m jussayin that she might fill up those shiny pages with the most gloriously fashionable pictures of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, differently abled and sized - the entire beautiful rainbow of diversity of humanity that the world has ever seen.

Community Project H.O.O.D. and New Beginnings Church Host World’s Largest Baby Shower Project H.O.O.D. (Helping others obtain Destiny) and New Beginnings Church of Chicago recently hosted a baby shower for parents in the community. Items were donated by sponsors and community members and distributed on Saturday, August 4.

Parents who attended the shower also had access to attend classes on breast feeding, CPR, child safety and childbirth.

•The baby shower made donations to nearly 1500 families •Donations included 125 donated car seats from Diono and more than 425 boxes of diapers •Dental cleaning was offered and over 50 kids got their teeth cleaned from Smiles of Tomorrow •More than 20 vendors participated including SIDS of Illinois, Ounce of Prevention, Catholic Charities, Kennedy King, and Kids In Danger •Catered food for the families came from BIG Daddy’s BBQ •And the families also were able to get in the bouncy houses, dunk tank, and ride horses The church and organization are still in need of car seats and diapers to bless registrants and walk-ins. Austin Hedges came right back in the top of 6th with a 3-run homerun to give the Padres a 3-1 lead.

The Bears and their rookie linebacker are locked in a head-to-head showdown with his contract negotiations. Now in the third week of his holdout, fans and media members are growing anxious. The question is now who’s responsibility is it to end this stalemate. #TheBIGS very own Eugene McIntosh and Terrence Tomlin weigh in on the matter Eugene says…

It’s either now or never! Chicago Bears fans LOVE their linebackers (Butkus, Singletary, Urlacher) and with the recent addition of #54 to the National Football Hall of Fame over this past weekend, it’s Roquan Smith time!

As the only unsigned first round draft pick from the 2018 draft, this will be his 3rd week missing training camp. The helmet rule/on the field behavior rule has stipulations in his contract stating if he was fined then he could be voided guaranteed money. His agency isn’t going, and we KNOW the Bears aren’t going! At the end of the day this is all business.

I don’t think the Bears want to set a precedent of being the first to do ANYTHING...especially setting a standard for the future. As Chicagoans, we’ve watched this franchise LONG enough to know what it’s all about at the end of the day.

As for Smith’ agency, they probably think they have his best interests at hand, but this could also be a stunt for the company’s future as well. If they can pull this off, big clients = big $$!

At the end of the day, all Roquan has to do is crush somebody coming across the middle and lead the Bears D to a W! For now,...something/someone’s gotta give!

If Roquan Smith is who the Bears think he is, (RIP Dennis Green) then the burden of responsibility to end the rookie’s current threeweek holdout rest solely on their shoulders.

Playing linebacker for the Bears is one of the most coveted positions in all of sports. Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher said as much during his induction speech this past weekend in Canton, Ohio. Drafting Smith #8 overall in this year’s draft sent the message that they view Roquan as the next Bears linebacker to follow in the footsteps of Dick Butkus, Mike Singletary, Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.

Yes, Roquan is missing valuable time in training camp with his teammates and it is in his best interest to get in there as soon as possible. However, the NFL is a different beast when it comes to player contracts and average length of careers for player’s. It is also in his best interest to make sure every “i” is dotted before he risks his health on the football field.

For me, a solution is simple. You drafted this kid to be the next anchor of your defense for an organization with a long, healthy history of greats at his position. It’s time to put your money where your mouth is and get Roquan Smith in training camp with his teammates where he belongs.
