And although parents are busying themselves purchasing school clothes and supplies—or lining up for one of the giveaways-- it’s also time for parents to “stay woke” when preparing their kids to go back to school. Given the challenges in our school system and community at large, parents whether married or single, must stay vigilant about what’s going on and equip their children with a mindset that will help them get over the obstacles they face – despite the stacked-up odds.

That mindset begins with the parents.

Staying “woke” might be hard to do.

But ask yourself this question: What are your expectations and awareness level?

When you become aware of what’s going on with your children, community and government, then you can raise your expectations of what you want for your children and encourage them to raise expectations of what they want for themselves.

Here are some things parents should stay woke about…

1. Lack of School Funding—Same old story, right? Unfortunately Chicago education is about politics. According to CPS Chicago, Governor Rauner used his veto

power to cut $250 million in education funding for Chicago Public Schools. Lack of funding continues to leave children, especially those of color, at a serious deficit.

What should you do? Get involved. Let your legislators know how you feel. Attend town hall meetings and let your voice be heard. Run for your Local School Council; support your teachers, stay in the know so you can make an informed decision about what you will want for your child’s future.

2. Safety Some good news for a change: According to Chicago Public Schools, incidents of crime have dropped by 32 percent along Safe Passage routes since the 2012-2013 school year when Mayor Emanuel implemented community-based Safe Passage routes. However, parents must continue to do their due diligence in keeping their children safe. Keep close tabs on your children no matter their age. Just because they are teens doesn’t mean parents can loosen the reigns. In fact, that’s when students need the most guidance. I know it’s hard to do especially when you’re holding down a job or two, but woke parents go out of their way to make those arrangements when they can’t keep an eye on their students.

One way to keep tabs is to keep kids busy.

Nail down where your children are going and what they will do once that dismissal bell rings. What are they doing beyond

the Safe Passage routes? It’s common sense to know it’s unsafe for kids to have the run of the streets unsupervised. And yet, many parents allow it. Playing video games at Peewee’s house (especially when his Mama isn’t home) may not be the greatest option either. You don’t know who or what may be there (thugs, drugs, firearms…) Know who their friend’s “people” are. Consider enrolling your children in After School Matters, an organized sport, or an academic program. If they are home, establish rules, delegate chores, restrict visitation otherwise there will be consequences. Let them know what those consequences are, and act on them consistently. Don’t forget to have “The Talk” with your children – boys and girls. They must know how to properly engage with police. Lay down YOUR law before school begins so they know what to expect. Your kids need to be in a safe environment and a tightly run one, whether you’re present or not.

3. School Performance The Achievement Gap is still a major issue. The disparity between Black and White school performance hasn’t closed much in the last 50 years. According to data from the 2013 National Assessment for Educational Progress, the average Black student scores at just the 22nd percentile. All the continued on page 03

more reason to stay woke about your children’s progress. You may not realize it, but you are your child’s first teacher.

Educators may have your sweeties seven hours out of the day, but you’ve got your children the remaining 17. Learning begins and ends at home with you.

Learning starts at birth. Did you know that reading, talking, singing, hugging and playing with an infant actually grows the baby’s brain? From age zero to three is the most critical brain growth period. But it doesn’t stop there. As your children grow, exposing them to learning outside the classroom places your kids at an advantage. Here’s a suggestion: When you go to the store, pick up a couple of workbooks, puzzles and flashcards and work with your kids 15 minutes a day. Take a trip to the library for books. Instead of mindless games, download fun learning apps they can play on your phone. Expose your teens to learning opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) through camps, programs and workshops. Some camps may be pricey, but that doesn’t mean give up. Find affordable workshops through local community organizations, colleges, the park district, or ask other parents. If you want your munchkins to love learning and do great in school and life, they have to feel the love from you.

Keeping them busy and involved is how you show it.

4. Student Behavior and Accountability If you set expectations low to no or don’t follow up, your children may likely slack off, get caught up in a tangle of failures and not recover. It becomes a spiral of disappointments and frustration for the children, the teachers and you. One thing parents need to do is make kids accountable for their actions or lack of them. Consider corrective consequences when they don’t study and rewarding ones when they do. There should be consequences when they act a fool in school too. It is frustrating when teachers have to play parent with your children. Setting expectations on behavior begins with you.

Remember, you’re their first teacher. Lay down the law before your child sets foot in that school. And promise to follow through.

Keep in mind, if they are struggling, there is a reason. The expectation from YOU is that you find out what that reason is. It’s not always about being lazy and hardheaded. It might go deeper e.g. bullying, hormones kicking in, undiagnosed learning disabilities, anger issues, unchallenging work… any number of things. Bottom line, you want them to be the best they can be.

Talk about college and careers starting in 5th grade so they can start thinking about their future. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is the future. If they are creative, add the “A” for art in technology to create STEAM. They may not always reach the top, but they will soar trying to get there. Parental Involvement Meeting the teachers, attending school functions, volunteering – generally showing up - makes a positive difference in your child’s academic and behavior performance. Wait, did somebody just think out loud that they are too busy and tired? Dear Parent Who Thought That: The struggle is real.

You work hard. I know you can’t find the time. Last year you either had to work, was too tired, or you forgot. You were a ghost.

Unfortunately, too many schools in urban communities are haunted by parent ghosts.

But if the student gets in trouble, you best believe parents angrily appear, poised to curse out the teacher. But check this out: In an article published by Childtrends.org, titled “Parental Involvement in Schools,” it states that, “Students with parents who are involved in their school tend to have fewer behavioral problems and better academic performance, and are more likely to complete high school than whose parents are not involved in their school.”

This year, stay woke, by committing to show up at your children’s school.

Take time to make the time, because believe me, you will NOT find it. How do you do that when there is no time to find? You plan ahead. You know the routine: The upcoming parent-teachers meetings, field trips, conferences, etc. Before school begins, alert your supervisor that you want to take personal days throughout the year for events such as these. When you get the schedule, you can highlight the days and lock it in your phone. In fact, write it on a wall calendar too. The school calendar may be available to you on their website before school begins. Check it out. Tape that flyer to the ‘frig as a reminder. If you can’t make it at all, arrange back-up - and a back-up for your back-up. If you keep ghosting, you will be doing your child a disservice. Stay woke, parents. Show up.

6. School Shopping on a Budget Remember, second hand is fine—and it saves you money. If you choose to buy new, avoid expensive designer stuff. Is it worth throwing down $200 for a pair of sneakers your child will grow out of or get stolen? This is where many parents go wrong. Don’t spend your hard earned dollars on hype.

Make sure your purchases are aligned with school dress code policy and your budget.

Regarding school supplies, get a jumpstart on the supply list. Bet you’ve got some pens and pencils hiding in between your sofa pillows, in the junk drawer or winter coat pockets, old book bags, etc.…

You might not need to buy any! Also, take advantage of community Back-to-School festivals for free backpacks and supplies.

Check-ups and Immunizations This year, do not forget to schedule doctor and dentist appointments for your child. Appointments can get backed up in the office so it makes sense to schedule them ahead of time. Community Back-to-School festivals may offer them as well. Usually you’re supposed to visit your doctor at least once a year, the eye doctor once a year, and the dentist every six months. Keep medical papers in an envelope and put in a safe place.

If you are a parent who doesn’t believe in shots for your children, find out - like right now - what is the school’s policy on this. It would be horrible to drop your kids off and the school denies admittance because they didn’t have up-to-date shots or you forgot the papers.

And while you’re at it, schedule an appointment for yourself. Parents get so caught up taking care of other people, you neglect to take care of yourself. Don’t forget about you. Stay woke about your health and well-being. Get regular checkups. Get those teeth cleaned and fixed.

Eat more fruits and veggies, less fried foods. Exercise more. Lose weight. Obesity can lead to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and other life threatening diseases. And while you’re at it, let go of those unhealthy relationships too. Clear out ALL those toxins in your body and your life.

J.B. Pritzker Taps State Rep. Julianna Stratton As Running Mate

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The tides have taken an interesting change in the Illinois Gubernatorial race.

Last week, Democratic candidate and billionaire J.B. Pritzker announced his running mate. State Representative Juliana Stratton (5th District) will join Pritzker in a run for second in command.

Last year, Stratton ran against long-time incumbent Illinois State Representative

Ken Dunkin. A race that became one of the most expensive campaigns with each candidate garnishing support from various unions and political super pacs. She won in a landslide victory with the first-time endorsement of a sitting U.S. President, Barack Obama, in a contest that set the stakes high and the message clear–beat Gov. Bruce Rauner.

She served as administrative law judge at City of Chicago Office of Administrative Hearings, deputy hearing commissioner at the City of Chicago Department of Busi-

ness Affairs & Consumer Protection, executive director at the Cook County Justice Advisory Council, and executive director at the Cook County Justice for Children.

As an attorney and resident of Bronzeville, Stratton is a favorite among her constituents, making herself accessible at community meetings and rolling her sleeves up as a freshman state legislator in this latest budget crisis.

It is no wonder why the Pritzker camp would consider Stratton as a viable running mate for the governor’s race. She is

highly supported by two of the biggest labor unions in the state, SEIU and CTU (Chicago Teachers Union). But most importantly, it sets a historical tone of her becoming the first African-American woman as a running mate in an Illinois gubernatorial race. It also helps add creditability to J.B. Pritzker’s presence in the African-American community and connects him to the real interests that concern voters.

Stratton may be the bump that is much-needed in helping to establish more familiarity for Pritzker.

Stratton To Host Free Shred Day For Chicago Residents State Rep. Juliana Stratton, D-Chicago, will host a free document “Shred Day” on Saturday, August 19 from 9 a.m. until noon at St. Edmund’s Village Apartments, located in the rear parking lot at 6253 S. Michigan in Chicago.

bills or other confidential information that we no longer need,” Stratton said. “Shredding these documents is a simple way to protect against identity theft, clean out the house and help the environment by keeping unnecessary waste out of our landfills.”

Stratton’s Community Shred Day will feature a large, mobile document shredder

where area residents can destroy confidential papers on-site in a secure and environmentally-friendly way, free of charge.

Residents are asked not to leave cardboard boxes at the event, as they cannot be shredded. There is a two-bag limit per car. Attendees will be assisted on a firstcome, first-served basis.

“Providing free services like ‘shred day’ to the community is one of the many ways that I strive to connect local residents with valuable resources,” Stratton continued. “I hope that residents will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Toyota Gives Top Award to Nation’s Largest Minority-owned Chemical Management Supplier

By Donald James Real Times Media At its annual business meeting held recently in Erlanger, Ky., Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (TMNA) discussed goals and objectives with direct and indirect suppliers in preparation for the new fiscal year.

As customary at these meetings, Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, honored suppliers who have exceeded the company’s expectations. Among the 25 suppliers honored was Metro Detroit-based Chemico Group, which received Toyota’s “Superior Performance Award,” the automobile company’s highest honor for performance.

“We are proud and honored to be recognized by Toyota Motor North America for our efforts in supplier quality,” said Leon C. Richardson, founder, president and CEO of Chemico, the nation’s largest veteran and minority-owned chemical management supplier. “All of us at Chemico recognize the significance of this award.

It demonstrates our deep commitment to providing excellent service and customer satisfaction.”

“We look for suppliers that go above and beyond in meeting our requirements and expectations,” said Jim Holloway, TMNA’s general manager of supplier relations, risk management, and supplier diversity. “Chemico has been instrumental, especially with our Georgetown facility in Kentucky, as we were ready to launch the

all-new Camry in June. By working collaboratively with Chemico, we were able to develop a win-win scenario. It was a very compressed lead time, but Chemico was able to meet the aggressive schedule.”

While Chemico is a certified minority business, the company was chosen for the award from a large field of non-minority-owned suppliers.

“This award is about performance, and not about the fact that Chemico is a minority supplier,” said Jason Reid, TMNA’s general manager of indirect purchasing for all North American manufacturing sites.

“Chemico is a phenomenally performing business that happens to be minority-owned. Chemico met and exceeded our expectations at our Georgetown, Kentucky, and Blue Springs, Mississippi, facilities.”

Yet, Richardson credits much of Chemico’s success to being a member of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council, a 40-year-old non-profit organization whose mission is to certify minority business enterprises (MBEs), develop their capacities, and help generate procurement opportunities with its corporate membership. To date, MMSDC has 1,200 MBEs, and works with 300 corporations.

It has orchestrated more than $26 billion in annual contracts between major corporations and certified minority business members.

Executives at TMNA agree on the impact of MMSDC. “We recognize that some small minority businesses are not always ready to work with a large automotive manufacturer, like ourselves or some of our competitors,” Reid explained. “So, we are deeply involved with working with the Michigan Minority Supplier District Council to help facilitate business opportunities with certified minority suppliers.”

Toyota’s position on diversity and inclusion has always been an open book. The company is a member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable (BDR), which was created more than a decade ago to achieve spending of $1 billion or more with minority and women-owned suppliers/businesses.

Additionally, since 1990, the annual Toyota Opportunity Exchange has provided MBEs and women business enterprises (WBEs) suppliers with a yearly platform in which to build relationships with the giant automaker. Millions of dollars in diverse supplier contracts have been generated

over the years, as a direct result of connections and relationships made at Toyota Opportunity Exchange.

“Our diverse suppliers are very strategic to us because of their creativity and flexibility and the entrepreneurship that they bring to the table,” said Holloway.

“It’s very important to us to not only use our supplier base, but to grow it. Leon and Chemico are great examples of partnerships and how TMNA has been instrumental in helping them grow.”

Chemico was started in 1989 and is a certified chemical management supplier specializing in integrated solutions for the entire chemical lifecycle that includes procurement, on-site inventory management, distribution, environmentally conscious disposal, and more. The company is a Tier 1 supplier to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Chemico employs more than 300 people across 22 states and three countries. Last year Chemico sales exceeded $100 million.

In addition to being recognized by Toyota for excellence as a supplier, Chemico has received General Motors’ “Supplier of the Year” honors for the past seven years.

A Wake-up Call for Justice and Democracy in America

Davis: As most Americans watched in disbelief and outrage, ultra-right wingers, White nationalists, self-proclaimed KKK members and Nazis rallied in Charlottesville, Va., to assert their re-emergence as a legitimate force in U.S. social and political life and an integral part of the Trump coalition. The President condemned the violence and “hatred on both sides” but refused to disavow orgaDanny K. Davis nizations such as the KKK and the Nazi party or the slogans and ideology of those who advocated racism, White supremacy, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and homophobia.

The KKK was outlawed by Congress in 1871 but has undergone several iterations in the years since. Nazism, which was outlawed in Germany after World War II, has reappeared in various forms in the United States. More recently, a host of new ultra-right formations have incorporated many of the most repugnant features of these organizations under various guises.

The ultra-right, which gathered in Charlottesville under the banner of “unite the right” to protest the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee, the slave owning, treasonous military leader of the brutal, horrific armed uprising against the U.S. Government which resulted in the death of 750,000 soldiers, more than the combined total of U.S. military deaths in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan combined at a time when the population of the U.S. was just 7 percent of what it is today, created a racially based, hate promoting civil disturbance on a scale we have not seen in a generation.

The events in Charlottesville unfold in the wake of initiatives by the Trump administration to turn back an array of hard won gains in social and economic justice and democratic rights since World War II, including voting rights protections, protections for the LGBTQ community, women’s rights and labor rights. The racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, the fomenting of hatred and violence, by those who have come from around the country to “unite the right” in Charlottesville is despicable and reprehensible. After School Matters: Summer Teen Cuisine

By Kennedy Horton Defender Contributing Writer After School Matters is a collection of programs for Chicago teens covering the arts, technology, science programming, sports, and communications. Following an apprenticeship model, the program has impacted over 200,000 teens since 1991. From theater to robotics to lifeguarding to website design, After School Matters is dedicated to helping teens grow in their craft, including teens who are interested in the culinary arts, as demonstrated by the Summer Teen Cuisine Lunch Buffet Series that occurred once a week from July 14 through August 10.

Each week, there was a different menu from a sponsoring restaurant, ranging from modern American food to Spanish to Asian food. The chef from the sponsoring restaurant provided the menu and the students chose what they would like to cook. For example, on July 28, the menu was Argentinian-America, provided by El Che Bar on Washington Boulevard. On August 4, the day covered by the Defender, the menu was contemporary Japanese cuisine, provided by Arami on Chicago Avenue. The grub ranged from Hiyashi Chuka under entrees to a Five Spice Grilled Tofu Salad to a Black Sesame Short Bread Ice Cream Sandwich for Dessert, all cooked and served by the teenagers alongside executive chefs.

When the Defender visited, the lunch took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts on the 3rd floor Terrace.

Though the weather was not as sunny as a summer’s promise, spirits remained high. With teen performances by the West African Djembe Drumming program from Austin throughout the lunch, there was a steady optimism among the colorful crowd. Many different people were in attendance.

There were reporters, Chicago residents, and even international visitors—a diverse group of people.

Many of the different programs provided by After School Matters were represented at the lunch.

In addition to the main event, the culinary artists, teen drummers provided the music and art from art students decorated the venue. The plants at the venue were grown and cared for by the students who are a part of the After School Matters urban farming program. They also provided some of the herbs that the culinary students used in their meals. So, even though the spotlight was on culinary arts students, many more After School Matters participants and their talents were displayed.

For only $15 in advance or $20 at the door, these lunches were truly a great way to support Chicago’s teens and taste-test some of the city’s eateries. It’s an important program to support, because it’s not just teaching teens various crafts, but also putting them in the position to be able to use those crafts and those skills for profit.

Laura Murray, After Schools Matter Communications Coordinator, shed some light on the apprenticeship aspect of the program. “If a student is interested in sports, instead of playing basketball, they’re learning how to coach basketball,” she says. “And then they can get certified.” The kids get more out of it than they realize.

Besides just a stipend, $336 - $725 in the summer and $275 - $425 per session during the school year, the teens who participate are really gaining a lot. Most of them hear about the program through teachers or friends who are involved. They then apply online for an opportunity to be a part of it.

Devonna P., a 16-year-old from Ashburn attending King College Prep, is one such lucky participant. As one of the culinary students, she began After School Matters in the spring session of 2017, after hearing about it from a friend. Among the many skills gained, she claims the most valuable one she’s learned is “how to work better in a group.”

In this program, there is something for everybody--from paintings to photography to print making, fashion design, whatever a student may take an interest in. It’s a significant and constructive way for young people to hone themselves and grow with like-minded individuals.

For the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC), the second time around for North Lawndale Art Festival is the charm.

This year’s festival, which was extended from one day to three, saw an increase in attendance from community members, vendors, and artists alike.

Sheila McNary, NLCCC chair of the arts and culture committee and chair on the executive committee, said she hoped the Festival, held again at Douglas Park Cultural Center, 1401 S. Sacramento Dr., would become a staple event in the community. Each day of the Festival represented a different form of art starting with the Ailey Camp Chicago recital on Friday, Aug. 4; the actual art festival itself occurred on Aug. 5; and a STEAM/STEM education fair plus a screening of the film “Hidden Figures” was on display on Aug. 6.

“I would like for this whole event to unify the community, help us to look for growth in our contributions and help us start to look for growth in our community because there hasn’t been any kind of growth in our community for 60 years,” said McNary. “I think what this can do is bring out all the hidden treasures in our community in art and... this can put people on the map.”

The Festival was a draw for established artists from throughout the community. Gerald Griffin, a first time participant of the Festival, had quite a collection on display for prospective buyers to consider. He said McNary recruited him personally to attend and show-off his talent to Festival attendees.

“I wanted to support the community; this is a great fair, it gives people a great opportunity to interact whether it is with the visuals, music, food,” said Griffin. “There’s a lot of families here and I think that’s important to recreate that bond of community and family that used to exist and go somewhere where people don’t have to worry about the senseless violence.”

Griffin, a School of the Art Institute of Chicago alumnus, has been an artist for more than 30 years and has had a gallery in the city for 20 years. He said his work typically centers around social commentary from an African American perspective. One of his paintings, “Breakfast at Tiana’s,” is a reimagining of the iconic image from the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” with an African American woman taking center stage in place of original subject, Audrey Hepburn. He explained the purpose behind the painting is that, at times, African Americans don’t see themselves portrayed in a positive light by mainstream media.

“Breakfast at Tiana’s” took slightly more than two months to complete,” said Griffin. He explained some of his pieces can take a few weeks to several months to complete depending on the scale and detail of the composition.

Griffin encouraged community residents interested in supporting art and culture that reflects their community and people who look like them to purchase art.

“There are a lot of talented individuals in our community but often their talent goes unrecognized so they don’t get the feedback to feel that this is something they can do,” said Griffin. “I think an event like this helps to give them a platform to be able to create art and build that confidence and get that feedback.”

Alexie Young, a NLCCC arts and culture committee member and local artist, said the organization is looking for opportunities to create “good vibes.” She said NLCCC was excited to make the festival a cultural experience because other communities have multiple summer events.

“This is an opportunity for community members, local vendors, and entrepreneurs to gather and galvanize in one of our very amazing spaces and venues in the community,” said Young. “We decided that we no longer wanted to leave our neighborhood to enjoy those types of festivities.”

La Havana Madrid: A Heartfelt Celebration of Latinos Journey in Chicago Goodman Theatre Presents Teatro Vista’s La Havana Madrid

For Cubans coming to Chicago for economic opportunities, fleeing their homeland and leaving their families behind was a painful price to pay. With dreams of seeing their loved ones again slowly vanishing as the years went by and thoughts Brenda and Rick of returning home are McCain even less possible, life in America became a contrast between joy and tragedy.

However, somewhere on the corner of Belmont and Sheffield led a little piece of Cuban Heaven called La Havana Madrid, which became a safe haven and a beacon of light for the Latino community. A place where you can reminisce about your family, your friends and your home, this Latin nightclub was a place where life could begin again and you could feel safe among your new family of lost souls in a land of hope called Chicago.

A Musical History Lesson of Survival “La Havana Madrid” was written by playwright and costar Sandra Delgado and directed by Cheryl Lynn Bruce; it is a combination of true life stories of Latino immigrants coming to Chicago with dreams of living a decent life only to experience racism, gentrification, displacement, relocation, poverty, and continual fears of dewww.chicagodefender.com

Adapted into a musical monologue of several immigrants telling their stories of coming and living in Chicago, each character’s emotional journey is captured within their melodic words of hope and trepidation. Blending in a band which played the beautiful sounds of mambo and salsa music, each story became a musical history lesson of how each person survived and rose above their current situation.

One of the characters Roberto “Carpacho” Marin (Marvin Quijada) shared his life experiences that depicted the plight that immigrants faced fearing ICE officers (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) sending them back to Cuba. And the real life legendary Colombian-American musician Roberto “Carpacho” Marin and his band of 30 years play live at each show.

As early as the 1950’s, Cubans began migrating to Chicago. The attraction of economic opportunities brought many to Chicago, however most were political dissidents fleeing Fulgencio Batista’s repressive regime. Being victorious in the Cuban

revolution in 1959, some returned to Cuba but the majority stayed, leaving approximately 2,500 Cubans in Chicago in 1960.

During that time, Chicago’s Puerto Rican communities were living on the west side of Lincoln Park between the intersection of Armitage Avenue and Halsted Street.

Opposition to the new Castro government and the “freedom flights,” which permitted Cubans to reunite with their families in the United States, brought in an estimated 20,000 additional Cubans to the Chicago area between 1960 and 1973.

Sandra Delgado, the writer of this magnificent play, brilliantly captures some of these escapades in such a warm and touching way that it makes you want to learn more about the amazing stories of immigrant historical journeys of freedom.

Although some of the testimonials that were shared of the Latinos journey were disheartening, Director Cheryl Lynn Bruce danced into our hearts with upbeat and fun performances about this pivotal piece of Chicago history.

Our only negative is the seating which

is set up like a night club; there were times when the actors sat on the stage and we lost visual contact with them, which to us hurt our connection with their story. We believe a simple high chair on the stage could have resolved that issue.

We recommend “La Havana Madrid” if you want to learn about one of Chicago’s increasingly forgotten parts of history in Lincoln Park, which is now among the most expensive and least diverse neighborhoods in the city. Through this production, you will step into Chicago’s legendary La Havana Madrid where you will be taken back in time to the 1960’s at the longgone Caribbean night club.

Bud Billiken Makes Us Feel At Home Again

By KayCee Shakur Defender Contributing Writer There’s a Saturday in mid August that thousands of Black Chicagoans look forward to. On its eve you can stroll down King Drive and see the half assembled tents of those who have already claimed their viewing spots; the visual brings a nostalgic feeling to anyone who grew up looking forward to the Bud Billiken Parade. On the morning of the second Saturday in August, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement as the crowd begins to thicken and an even more present sense of culture emerges. With so many changes in our communities, Chicago just doesn’t feel like the Chicago we know and love sometimes, but at this year’s Bud Billiken Parade, it felt like home again.

The day was filled with laughs, dance, food, and of course our hometown hero Chance the Rapper, who served as this year’s Grand Marshall. Chance has done a great deal of giving back this year, but the 24-year-old Chicago native doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Days before the parade, Chance announced that he’d be giving out 30,000 backpacks to attendees, but the real surprise were the envelopes being passed out by Chance’s Social Work’s organization staff.

Just before the start of the parade, Chance announced that in addition to being this year’s Grand Marshall, he would also be gifting Chicagoans with a free concert called BBBash with surprise performances from DLow, Tha Pope, MadeinTYO, Future, and Chance himself. People of all ages screamed ‘Hey Chance!” hoping that our city’s hero would glance their way and wave. It was evident that this kid from Chatham had the power to ignite hope in the hearts of thousands of Chicagoans, and it was remarkable.

It wouldn’t be the Bud without a classic performance from the South Shore Drill Team who looked like royalty in their black and gold, still as precise as I’ve always remembered. Whenever the team stopped to perform, you’d hear exclamations like “that’s the drill team!” as crowds ran to gates to catch a glimpse of their military precise moves. Then there’s none other than the Jesse White Tumbling Team who are nothing short of celebrities to parade attendees.

The Bud Billiken Parade performances have a way of showing Chicago culture like no other; it’s just not the Bud without over the top themes, countless juke/footwork mixes, and random crowd outburst of “aye aye ayeee!” The culture was thick!

Though the fun and culture were endless, a parade held on the Southside of Chicago could not be free of political messages. Alongside of the parade route was a message to our Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

There stood a ferris wheel about 9-10 feet tall with a passenger, Mayor Emanuel; just below the display were tombstones with the names of schools that have been closed by the mayor in recent years, including the number of students affected by the closings.

The display was created by the National Teacher’s Academy, a high ranking elementary school that CPS wants to transform into a high school. I spoke with one of the creators of the display and parent of NTA student Latasha Watkins who says that “The Mayor should think about his investment choices in Chicago Public Schools that benefit not only the communities that have, but the communities that don’t have, and the Southside is one of the communities that abso-

The Bud Billiken Parade will forever serve as one big South Side family reunion. Many of us got to see President Obama in person for the first time at the Bud. Many of us found out we lost the late great Bernie Mac at the Bud. We got to

see some of our friends before the school year began, and some of us made new friends for the day. Radio Personality Sway Partners With Toyota: “Chicago Is A Fascinating Place”

Sirius XM’s Sway Calloway of Sway in the Morning has teamed with Toyota to spotlight new artists.

Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer If you were a part of the generation who grew up during the “Golden Era” of hip hop when Common was referring to love for hip hop as a love lost, Twista was flipping lyrics in lightning speed, WuTang Clan fused the love of Kung Fu classics with music and the West Coast versus East Coast rap beef was real—then you’re probably very familiar with Sway Calloway. He’s one-half of the radio duo of The Wake Up Show with co-host, King Tech.

The Oakland b-boy took to the radio airwaves connecting with the Generation X demographic with grace, intellect and style on San Francisco’s KMEL and soon breaking into the number two market—Los Angeles on KKBT. From his days on MTV as an on-air personality, Sway has become a credible beacon of information and cultural awareness as the business model of radio, music and broadcast continue to adjust through various stages.

As a bridge between the millennials and baby boomers—his no nonsense and honest approach has secured a permanent residency on SiriusXM’s channel 45 every morning with the Sway in the Morning on Shade 45 since 2011.

So, it’s no surprise when Toyota developed a special campaign to connect with younger consumers—and chose Sway as its spokesperson to help discover unknown musical talent.

The Toyota Music Mix platform connects with music architects such as Sway to give artists a chance to spotlight their talents on his show. In addition to building this unique opportunity, the audience is able to experience this music vet’s deep

range of knowledge and experience. The Chicago Defender had a candid conversation with Sway as he stopped through Chicago to promote his partnership with Toyota during the week of Lollapalooza festivities.

Why is Chicago an important stop for you to do a live remote from?

I’m in no means trying to be an expert on Chicago but it reminds me so much of Oakland, and since the 1990’s my partner of King Tech and I was syndicated on WEJM [Chicago], we’ve been coming to Chicago. You hear about the politics—city government or neighborhood politics. It’s a very complex place from an outsider looking in. It’s hard for anyone who is not raised in Chicago or at least resides in Chicago to get the full scope with the adversities that people face in Chicago.

Also, I find there’s a lot of creative, intelligent potential leaders and visionaries in Chicago—I’ve always felt that way. How people are able to really create something out of minimal resources, which is a part of artistic expression. The last time we were there, we went off the grind a little bit.

We were there for the Barbershop movie.

We’re here for the movie but let’s go into the city and talk to people and see what’s going on in Chicago. What’s on people’s mind? This was during the presidential campaign so politics was an obvious mainstay.

In the last five years, there’s been a resurgence of musical talent making a national impact. What attracts outsiders to our young talent?

Dreezy, Lil Bibby, Lil Durk, all of these folks—they started making a way for themselves and I thought that was fascinating.

ing what Rashid has accomplished. Since 1991, who knew he would be an Oscar winner and big-time movie star and all of the things he’s been doing with his nonprofit organization. Chicago to me is a fascinating place. I wish there were as many headlines that reflect balance on the potential of Chicago as well. When we come out there, we try to put spotlight on stuff that people may not be aware of.

Does partnering with brands like Toyota make a difference in connecting with a younger demo?

What we’re doing with Toyota now and in the past, they’ve shown an interest in reaching out to that demographic and finding out what else are they about.

What else do they like and how this music culture influences them? So, we make it a commitment to rediscover new artists.

This has always been my repertoire since I started back in the day with King Tech on The Wake Up Show. I played a major role in helping give exposure to Eminem and his talent.

Last time we broadcast here, before Bibby and all those guys blew up. Chance, Vic Mensa, Durk—people hadn’t heard much yet. The drill scene was bubbling.

We bumped into a gold mine, what are these kids talking about?

What do you see now in radio with newcomers?

I see a lot of imitation. Imitation in this day and age means something different than when we came up. When I came into it, it was about “how do I not sound like the other guy and how do I bring something to my show the other guy or girl doesn’t have?” How do we stand out? Now, I think digital technology has made the ability to be heard easier and accessible. So, you

There’s a lot of people out there doing it with no checks and balances.

Is this good or bad for the state of radio?

The pros to that is now you have a bigger variety of people you can listen to and more people can be heard to get their voices heard.

The cons are there’s really no filter and no standard. You have to search far and wide to find the high quality in broadcast that goes on now. I don’t think that’s as important as the audience it serves as much as it did with me and King Tech. It’s the sign of the times.

I carry a bunch of basic fundamentals with me into 2017 and beyond and have the ability to adjust and adapt to the time place. What helped our longevity is that we created something great that was unique to us. www.chicagodefender.com

Awards were given to 14 outstanding scholars for the 201718 school year. Also receiving the “Building a Life Legacy Award” were Edward & Shirley Calahan of the Calahan Funeral Home, Inc. for their contributions given to the community through their “Giving a Hand Out to Give a Hand Up” Foundation. The foundation has given over $75,000 in college scholarships to graduating seniors and sponsors a coat and toy drive to support homeless shelters among many more initiatives. In the MIXX: Lisa Madigan Sends Clear Message, Global Mixx Music & Film Forum, West Side Music Festival Kicks Off

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer As we come close to the summer quickly passing us by in our rearview mirror—there is still a great deal of problems that plague our community. The extreme deficit that CPS faces as federal funding threatens to handicap the school district even Mary L. Datcher more with the start of school just around the corner. Most of the suburban and catholic schools opened their doors this week with a little less than last year’s season. But, Gov. Rauner is holding CPS’ tail to the flame validating his decision on “double” paying the district where others in the state also struggle.

Let’s stay tuned as the Illinois senate is scheduled to come together for a bipartisan vote on school funding—pressuring the governor to call for meetings with legislative leaders. According to the state’s Senate President, John Cullerton: “I’ve said all along that the only way to solve our problems is to work together in a bipartisan manner. I look forward to meeting with the governor and the other legislative leaders.”

On Saturday, Attorney General Lisa Madigan was seen in a vintage peach Stingray riding in the 88th Annual Bud Billiken parade only the day before announcing the passing of Senate Bill 189.

According to the Attorney General’s office, Illinois has now eliminated the statutes of limitations for felony criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse crimes against children. Senate Bill 189, initiated

by Madigan, was passed by the General Assembly unanimously and signed into law by the governor last Friday. This is an important precedent for sexual crimes especially with cases involving adults who were abused as children.

In an official statement, “Sex crimes against children are a horribly tragic violation of trust that can take a lifetime to recover from,” Madigan said. “This new law will ensure that survivors are provided with the time they need to heal and seek justice.”

Chance Last Minute Concert In an announcement on ABC-7 on Saturday morning, the four-time Grammy award winning artist Chance the Rapper gave out tickets at the Bud Billiken parade to a free concert later that evening. It was the hottest ticket in town for the shorties and the parents who were figuring out who to bribe for a pair for their kids. The increase in the parade’s attendance can definitely be attributed to two major factors—Chance and the South Shore Drill Team. gion? In all of their black and gold glory, they are a “show stopper” of the parade.

We welcome them back with “open arms.”

At the head of the parade, Chance wore his Grand Marshal crown like a king for the day as the U-Haul trailed behind him with his SocialWorks team passing out thousands of back packs to the young parade watchers.

Global Mixx Music & Film Forum Kicks-off This weekend marks the 11th Global Mixx Music & Film Forum presented by ComEd being held August 18 thru August 20 at the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago.

I’m a bit bias because it’s been a labor of love for the past 13 years—bringing working professionals together with aspiring talent in the areas of filmmaking, creative

media and music business.

Both the music and film business model has changed drastically over the last 10 years with digital technology changing the playing field. This year’s film conference brings some incredible minds together with a special actor’s workshop led by actress Jossie Harris and other film panels featuring “Living the Reality,” “Casting for Extras,” “Editing 101,” “The Digital Era,” Speed Mentoring Sessions and this year’s Honorary Film Co-Chair and Keynote Tarek “Terk” Stevens, who has worked with Taraji P. UIC Graduate Debuts First Narrative Feature Film at Black Harvest Film Festival

By Gina B. Defender Guest Columnist Nicole Franklin didn’t set out to be a filmmaker.

Originally from St. Louis, when Franklin arrived in Chicago to attend UIC, she had two goals: to be in Chicago, and to get a quality education Gina B. in order to find an alternative profession to being a performer. Having grown up acting and dancing, she knew that she needed to supplement those creative talents in the unstable world of show business.

While at UIC, Franklin majored in Communications and became involved in journalism, where she helped launch an independent newspaper and wrote marketing materials for the Eye Center. It was when she was invited to apply for the Illinois Minority Broadcast-

ers that her love for film began.

Franklin was sent to a news station where she showed a special aptitude in the skill of editing.

Proficiency in news editing would be her flotation device while auditioning and pursuing acting roles in Los Angeles. While she was hitting a brick wall in auditions, Franklin made great headway in editing, which eventually led her to film production, and the creation of her company, Epiphany, Inc. Fast forward to present day, Franklin is now a New York-based Director and Producer with 10 films and several awards under her belt. Her passion is in educating and entertaining, while encouraging the audience to be more productive by exploring and tackling taboo themes. Her signature presentation is filming joy and Black women, evidenced by one of her earliest films, Double Dutch Divas.

Her latest film, Title VII, is her first narrative feature and was made with a micro budget of less than $100K raised through independent campaigns, and shot with the assistance of film students from Farleigh Dickinson University.

While the theme of Title VII isn’t joyful, it certainly highlights a topic that isn’t often discussed in the Black community. Adapted from Within the Walls: A Journey through Sexism and Racism in Corporate America, by Daisy M.

Jenkins, the story struck a personal chord with Franklin.

At the age of 19, Franklin worked for a predominantly Black firm in Chicago where, for the first time in her life, she experienced Black-on-Black racism. Long after leaving the firm, she never forgot the discomfort of working for an unfair and often deliberately vi-

cious supervisor.

Title VII is named for the portion of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits discrimination in the workplace, and tells the story of a Black female CEO who objects to the hiring of another Black executive.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Franklin also mentors children and travels between New York and St. Louis to see her family and reconnect with the community. In the Fall, Franklin will be teaching television production at Hofstra University as an Assistant Professor.

Documentary on HBCUs Plays to Sold-Out Crowds at Black Harvest Festival

By Katara Washington Patton Defender Senior Editor Playing to a sold-out crowd twice, Firelight Films’ Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities blew into town for the Black Harvest Film festival, leaving Chicagoans beaming with pride and anxious to get the word out about the documentary highlighting the history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

From a current Morehouse College sophomore to proud HBCU alumni and even those who did not attend an HBCU, the sold-out crowds crammed into the Gene Siskel Film Center last week to partake in a history lesson that left them wanting more. Quotes from W.E.B Dubois, James Baldwin, Booker T. Washington and more poured out as black and white images of young co-eds graced the screen. The pictures of Black colleges from Louisiana to South Carolina and beyond filled the big screen as the audience was invit-

ed to travel as far back as slavery, when reading and learning were forbidden. Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Black Panthers and The Murder of Emmitt Till) masterfully sets the stage, showing how the inability to learn as slaves fueled the passion for education for freed slaves and put into motion the need for Black colleges and universities. The film showed how many abolitionists and churches began the schools to educate freed Blacks, and it exposed the politics and policies that often kept students and their institutions enslaved to the White standards of thinking.

The historic battle between Washington and Dubois concerning Black people’s “place” was outlined and brought to new life, with startling quotes from Washington and Dubois. You could hear the gasps in the audience as Washington’s words of submission boomed from the speakers and ricocheted off the hearts and minds of today’s modern African American.

The documentary also told the backstory behind the late Supreme Court Judge Thurgood Marshall, who attended a new and reformed Howard University Law School, run by a Black president who made some controversial moves to shift the law school. The president set the stage for Marshall’s career and the historic Brown vs. Board of Education case, which challenged the separate but equal law. The politics behind this story are also alarming yet expose the beauty of the Black mind at work.

Tell Them We Are Rising ingeniously chronicled the evolution of thinking and how students at HBCUS joined the front lines of protests for equal rights. It showed the bloody details and the consequences of fighting, interviewing surviving protest leaders, several who were visibly shaken as they reminisced about the protests nearly 50 years later. And the film concluded in the present day, interviewing current HBCU students about their reason for choosing HBCUs, especially now that Blacks can attend other universities.

It was refreshing to hear young sisters talk about the freedom to be themselves, to enjoy time in a setting where they no longer had to worry about being considered a minority or the only Black student.

Young men explained how they were allowed to grow and mature under the watchful eyes of Black professors, who they knew had their best interests in mind. With the sometimes bad news coming out of HBCUs because of a lack of funding and declining enrollment, it was great to hear the fresh voices with good news and hope for our schools.

The film traces the history from the beginning of Historical Black Colleges and Universities, which educated many Blacks after slavery.

Award-winning Filmmaker Stanley Nelson is known for exploring the history and experiences of African Americans.

Nelson, whose parents attended HBCUS and who is noted for examining the history and experiences of African Americans, says he wanted to tell the story of these significant institutions—especially since the story had not been told in such a fashion.

In a statement, he says: “The sacrifices made to create these institutions are significant and are what compelled me to capture this essential chapter of American history. I set out to tell a story of Americans who refused to be denied a higher education and—in their resistance—created a set of institutions that would influence and shape the landscape of the country for centuries to come. In particular, it was essential that this

film highlight authentic, personal accounts alongside archival footage, letters, diaries, photographs, and even home movies of the people who have lived the HBCU experience. The legacy of these institutions is not marked only by milestones and achievements; it is encapsulated by the minds and lives of the people who walked those storied halls.”

After the screenings in Chicago, much of the audience stayed around to ask questions of the film’s producer, Cyndee Readden.

Many were curious about plans to screen the movie at middle schools, colleges, and even for the returning prison population. The crowd was delighted to hear that the film would air on PBS in February and suggested many other outreach efforts. Readden directed everyone to the film’s website: HBCURising.com and suggested they send their suggestions through the site.

The Black Harvest Film Festival runs through August 31 at the Gene Siskel Center. Tell Them We Are Rising premieres on PBS February 19, 2018.
