Juliana Stratton: Making History By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer On a hot summer day in early August, people packed into the Englewood field house for an official announcement that some anticipated was the boldest move made by the JB Pritzker campaign since the billionaire started his bid as an Illinois gubernatorial candidate. The evening before, the news leaked Pritzker tapped 5th District State Representative Juliana Stratton as his running mate for Lieutenant Governor. To political insiders, this decision would not be surprising since the Democratic candidate has laid down stakes in the African American community since May. To select the first African American woman as a campaign partner brought the added the adrenaline shot it needed and once again thrusts Stratton back into the political spotlight. Working in public service throughout the last two decades and managing her small law firm as a mediator, Stratton threw her hat into the ring to challenge (seven-term) incumbent, then State Representative Ken Dunkin. Dunkin was not present for the last effort to vote alongside other colleagues to acquire the needed votes to override Rauner’s veto. His absence was the final straw for some who supported the long-time legislator for so many years but highlighted the rift developed between him and Speaker Michael Madigan. Stratton became the poster child for child care, labor, and home care advocates with campaign support from leading unions including AFSCME, SEIU Healthcare Illinois and Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). In addition to having the support of former boss and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle—the 5th district race was set as the first electoral battleground with Rauner. It would become the most expensive political race for the state representative office in Illinois. There was nearly $5 million spent and mile-high direct mail from candidates filling resident mailboxes. Stratton also received a personal endorsement by President Barack Obama bringing national attention to the Southside district. The mother of three and Bronzeville resident defeated Dunkin, winning the 5th district seat by 68 percent. Eight months later she continues the regimen of connecting with folks in her community. “After being sworn-in January, I continued most weekends to knock on doors and listen to residents. As I said to many of them, over and over again, ‘I cannot represent people if I don’t hear their concerns directly. I love it! that’s one part of being a state rep. The other part is being in Springfield meeting with advocates, organizers and filing bills. I filed over 25 bills after this first session,” she said. “I was very ambitious because these were all things that I knew were significant. One of the things I learned during my

I’ve known that process—you learn it in school or ‘School House Rock’ [she laughs]. It’s different when you’re there and see that process and how much it requires you to build relationships with those who have advocated around an issue with my colleagues in the state legislature.” She said out of the 25 bills that filed; nine ended up on the Governor’s desk. While she admits her pace has been non-stop as a junior state representative and the office is new, she feels her experience in public service has prepared her for the opportunity to join JB Pritzker as his running mate. “I’m so excited to have been asked by JB to join him on this team. I very much believe in his leadership ability. I believe he is the one to steer this state in the right direction after the failed leadership

of Gov. Rauner. He and I have gotten to know each other over these last several months,” Stratton says. “JB was a leader in early childhood education—that’s a priority of his. He helped to make sure 100’s of thousands of children and low-income families got breakfast. He recognized that getting a good early start in life is important.” Stratton currently serves on five different committees as a state legislator which involves higher education, criminal, mental health, aging, economic and policies. Although she is making strides along with her colleagues on the key criminal justice bills that were signed into law last week by Gov. Rauner, the question remains... is Stratton ready to leap into the Lieutenant Governor’s shoes? continued on page 04

“I didn’t think about being ready. I’ve been in public service for about 20 years on different levels. I’ve been on the city, county and now on the state level. I went to Springfield because I wanted to be a strong advocate for the 5th district and the state because we are state representatives—every law affects the entire state. I went to Springfield because I knew that I had a passion and wanted to work hard for the residents and wanted to be effective.” The district Stratton represents is diverse in race and economic levels which includes from the South Loop, Oakwood, Kenwood, Bronzeville, Hyde Park and Washington Park. Her base is predominately African American residents, but both Hyde Park and South Loop are not limited to her core base. To those outside of her district and Cook County, the familiarity of reaching other Illinoisians built on the same foundation in which she won her seat. Stratton’s main concern is how Gov. Rauner’s policies are affecting the working and middle-class residents. “He [Rauner] has a personal agenda. His agenda is not about doing what’s best for our communities. I’m motivated that I can join up with someone like JB. I believe he brings the vision. He brings the leadership abilities. He brings capacity to get things done because we’ve been stuck in Illinois for the last 2 1/2 years under Gov. Rauner’s failed leadership,” said Stratton. Both she and Pritzker has been very outspoken on why Gov. Rauner should sign HB 40 to protect women’s reproductive rights. Knowing this is a ‘hot button’ issue among pro choice advocates, it can bring Pritzker the necessary female boost to the campaign. Stratton explains. “The ability for wom-

en to decide in consultation with their doctors for what is best for their bodies. I’m a sponsor of HB 40 and spoke out on the House floors and talked in particular about the fact that for women of color, our bodies throughout history have been legislated. We deserve the right to make decisions for ourselves about our bodies. The message that I’ve given to my daughters, people should have the right to decide what is best for themselves with consultation with their doctors. It’s not just that. When I think about the message to mothers, I think about education, healthcare, and public safety.” With the concerns of many Illinoisans throughout the state, the effects of budget cuts have rippled throughout both major townships and rural areas. Towns such as Rockford, Cairo, East St. Louis, Decatur, and others rely on government services when employment is still high—Illinois is at an average 4.9 percent compared to 4.6 percent in the US. “Social service organizations dissipated and cuts to funding that would’ve costs institutions of higher education to close their doors. the budget. He vetoed services for autistic children, vetoed domestic violence programs, vetoed funding for violence prevention, senior care, and early childhood education. Virtually everything we could think of that would be necessary for the very fabric of sustaining our communities and communities across the state, not just Chicago,” Stratton continues. “When we think about the entire state, communities that were struggling at a time they needed it the most, Gov. Rauner vetoed the budget that would’ve provided funding to help those cities and towns and villages to start putting the pieces back together.” In talking with folks across the board, she feels the connection is about ‘relatability.’ “We find ourselves in that sandwich generation where we have to do both— take care of children and our elders. That’s something I would never change. I was very privileged to look after my mother during her last years of her life. When I think about safety, and we’re concern about our children as they go back and forth to school. Men are also concerned about this but often, we as women, are not thinking

about how to care for just our families but about our entire communities,” she sighs. “Raising the minimum wage and thinking about how women are often in jobs and how we can increase those wages so they can better care for their families. Equal pay, believe it or not, came up before the Illinois legislature this year and there was a heated debate—still in 2017 on whether women should make the same amount as men do for the same work.” When addressing a room full of people, Stratton is poised and confident. Her discipline is attributed to her love for working out and training for marathons and triathlons over the years. She is focused and direct but conscious of the fight ahead in the next few months while gearing up to travel throughout central and downstate Illinois— she says “as many communities as we can to hear from talking to people directly.” The grueling schedule of a state-wide campaign is no joke and pales in comparison to walking the streets of her 5th District. She understands and adds, “To train for marathons and triathlons, which I’ve done as a hobby for the last decade, people often say: ‘Oh you run 26 miles, bike, swim and run.’ I don’t think about it as far as from the physical capability, I reflect on the mental tenacity and the discipline that is required to train your body and your mind for long distances.” Stratton smiles and says, “I think about a campaign like an endurance sport in some ways. You have to remember to drink your water, you have to get sleep, you have to eat right, and you have to know yourself. That is something I’ve come to know in my years of training; it’s something I’ve applied to my first campaign and this one. To recognize it’s not a short sprint, it’s a long-distance race. We have another 14 months to go—hopefully. I’m keeping my eyes on the prize.” www.chicagodefender.com

Gov. Rauner Signs Several Criminal Justice Bills, Blasts Racism

Illinois lawmakers watch as Gov. Rauner signs criminal justice bills which allow non-violent ex-offenders a fresh start. By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer On Thursday, a major victory in Illinois criminal justice reform was achieved when Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a series of criminal justice bills giving offenders a fresh start entering society. Taking place at Safer Foundation located in the North Lawndale community, several lawmakers were on hand who advocated and co-sponsored Senate Bill 1688 (SB 1688), Senate Bill 1781 (SB 1781), House Bill 2373 (HB 2373), House Bill 698 (HB 698), House Bill 514 (HB 514) and House Bill 3874 (HB 3817). Speakers included members of the legislative Black Caucus; State Representatives LaShawn Ford (8th District) and Camille Lilly (78th District) along with State Senators Kwame Raoul (13th District), Jacqueline Collins (16th District) and Justin Slaughter (26th District). A long-time advocate of supporting ex-offenders in providing legal guidance and resources through her annual Expungement Summit, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Dorothy Brown was on hand for the special monumental announcement. “As I was standing there, I was so elated to hear all the state reps and state senators and then the governor to get up there and talk about giving people a second chance and not punishing them for the reset of their lives. My expungement www.chicagodefender.com

Hon. Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court expresses her pleasure with the co-sponsored bills. summit has gone on for 12 years. I took up the banner through Congressman Danny Davis and State Rep. Howard,” she said. “We were talking about this when it wasn’t even popular to talk about. To come to this point today, it means to me that people are finally getting it. They are finally changing their hearts. They understand the societal cause of giving people a second chance. If you don’t help people to take care of themselves, legally–they are going to take care of it one way or another.” One of the bills signed, HB 3817 creates the Youth Opportunity and Fairness Act. Under current Illinois law, only three in 1,000 juvenile arrests are expunged. According to the governor’s office, this law would allow for a quicker and easier process for young people to have their records erased, and would reduce the un-

lawful sharing of juvenile records. This Act would benefit young people who are burdened by juvenile arrest records when they seek employment and housing. Willie “J.R.” Fleming could not agree more on the importance of giving offenders a second chance which has led many faced with prejudicial blockades preventing them from employment or reduced to certain manual labor. As an ex-offender, Fleming can relate to the experience of finding a better way to combat those fears firsthand. As the Executive Director for the Anti-Eviction Campaign, he stood proudly as a shining example of change, opportunity and growth. “As a single father, three-time convicted felon–every door you try to enter is shut. You look at the job application process,

housing and acquiring a bank account. You see that one box with the question, “Are you a convicted felon?” You don’t even finish the application, you just walk away. To have that kind of hope taken from you before you apply–it’s detrimental. That’s why today’s signing removes that doubt. People can have that security knowing they can’t find out what has occurred in the past to take away that opportunity,” Fleming explain. For those who’ve been convicted of a non-violent, non-sexual crime–House Bill 2373 amends the Criminal Identification Act. This allows the court to seal the records of those who have been arrested or charged and received an order of supervision. The bi-partisan efforts on both sides of the aisle gave Gov. Rauner a boost needed to reflect from the backlash ignited from a cartoon released a few days ago by the GOP supported Illinois Policy Institute (IPI). The cartoon sparked a wave of statements calling it racist and insensitive. On the heels of criticism by Democratic leaders on the governor’s amended veto blocking additional school funding–this was another can of fuel on the bonfire of the ‘war of words’ of state taxpayers’ dollars going more towards CPS schools. When asked by the media if a personal apology for the offensive cartoon be offered by the governor, Rauner responded, “Absolutely not because I do not endorse any form of racism.”

There’s Power in Black Philanthropy By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer As Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) draws to a close, the Defender took a closer look into how some individuals have made an effort to positively impact Chicago’s African American community through philanthropy. Philanthropy does not always end with the stroke of a pen for a check; in fact, philanthropy can come in an assortment of hues that allows everyone to give to their fellow man or woman. But how exactly is one expected to be philanthropic without cracking their piggy bank? Lisa M. Williams Rollins, Regional Director of Workplace Initiatives, Midwest Region, United Negro College Fund, Inc., explained that people have more than money to offer. “You can give three ways: your time, talent, or with your treasure,” said Rollins. “Most of the time when people give their talent and their time, they’ll end up giving their treasure because they believe in [the cause].” The month of August was chosen as Black Philanthropy Month in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Copeland-Carson and the Pan-African Women’s Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet) to encourage people of African descent to give, according to the BPM website. Corliss Garner, chairperson of the advisory board for African American Legacy (AAL), said in recognition of BPM, AAL celebrated this year’s theme, “Giving Voice to Fuel Change,” which was selected to empower those who engage in philanthropy on a daily basis. She said the AAL kicked-off the month by working with the Mayor of Chicago’s office to issue a proclamation that declared August as Black Philanthropy Month; contacted its directory to encourage their network to be philanthropic and offered options as to how to be more philanthropic; partnered with organizations across the city to promote philanthropy; and spoke to African American CEOs of major philanthropic organizations in Chicago to ask for their perspective, according to Garner. The AAL is a philanthropic and educational initiative facilitated through the Chicago Community Trust designed to improve the quality of life for African Americans throughout the greater Chicagoland area. “It’s really been an all-out push to help folks understand why this is important, to give voice around philanthropy, and to help inspire philanthropy,” said Garner. AAL has given more than $2 million in grants to organizations in Chicago that support the Black community, according to its website. Garner said that not all philanthropic efforts need to be massive in terms of financial impact to be deemed as valuable, and any funds donated, no matter how large, can be used by the AAL. “We want the community to know that African American Legacy is the vehicle through which you can be more philanthropic,” said Garner. “Typically, folks think to be a philanthropist that they have to write a one-thousand dollar check or a ten-thousand dollar check or larger. There’s a notion of collective giving-- meaning together we can be a lot stronger for the community. We are really thinking about how we can inspire an ecosystem of philanthropy to get everyone involved and have everyone be a part of philanthropic work for the Black community.” Seasonal Giving Sometimes seasonal philanthropic efforts are every bit as important as yearlong efforts. Take for example, Christmas in the Wards, which for more than 20 years has brought cheer to families in need

during the holiday season and raised more than $1 million, according to its website. Founded by Larry Huggins, CEO, Riteway-Huggins Construction, Christmas in the Wards changed the holiday season for hundreds. According to a Defender report from 2015, more than 500 families have benefited from their annual giveaway. Huggins also partners with Everett and Tim Rand, owners of Midway Food & Liquor, to present the annual Chicago Football Classic, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The Chicago Football Classic raises funds every year to assist Chicagoland students with scholarships to attend colleges and universities throughout the country. Former presidential and Chicago mayoral candidate, Dr. Willie Wilson, has taken a hands-on approach in his philanthropy throughout Chicago. He said his goal is to be a “trailblazer” to the younger generation to show there are alternatives than selling drugs. Recently, he donated $10,000 to the House of Hope on Chicago’s West Side to help the center remain open for the next six to seven months “I don’t do things for show and tell, I do it because of my faith. I do believe that there’s a Heaven and a Hell, and Hell is not an option for me; Heaven is where I plan to go,” said Wilson. Wilson is no stranger to leveraging his resources to benefit the West Side. According to an ABC 7 Chicago report in August, Wilson partnered with Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin to create a property tax relief fund valued at $155,000 with Wilson contributing $150,000 and Boykin coming in at $5,000. Wilson said through the fund, donations maxing out at $300 were distributed to more than 200 county residents. However, in order to meet the need of all residents who require assistance, Wilson said he and Boykin have already partnered together to draft the Property Tax Hardship Relief bill to benefit individuals who may have lost their jobs, fallen ill, etc. to use either the equity in their homes or allow the county to finance the property for four years to allow residents an opportunity to pay off what is owed. He said his goal is to help 1,000 people come this January and February. The former mayoral candidate places an emphasis on politics and economics as methods for empowerment for the African American community within Chicago. He said he wants to encourage and support the next generation of leaders to run for office and “shape their future.” He did not rule out the possibility that his name will go back on the ballot. He said that he’s waiting for the result of an exploratory committee before making any final decision. “We are looking for them [politicians] to come together, I would even endorse them through the relationships that I have,” said Wilson. Another way Wilson intends on investing in Chicago is by opening a distribution center for his new business venture, Nu Bella, which produces female hygiene, haircare, and self-care products in the Windy City. He intends to open accompanying distribution centers in Miami, Greenwood, SC, Atlanta, North Carolina, and more locations. He said the announcement for all Nu Bella related business will be made in the weeks to come. “We need to start to invest in empowerment within ourselves so that is what we are trying to do presently,” said Wilson. “I try to set the example by giving back and saying ‘hey, look, you can be successful over here.’ I’m one person, I hope other people will step up and use their efforts together in a big way, but meanwhile I ain’t waiting on nobody. I’m going to step out here by myself and do whatever I can do.”

Book and Exhibit Showcase Black Philanthropy The root meaning of the word philanthropy is: “love of what it means to be human.” And that’s exactly what author Valaida Fullwood set out to capture in her book “Giving Back: A Tribute to Generations of African American Philanthropists.” Her book captures the voices and visages spanning ages and generations to illuminate transcendent truths and elicit new thinking about philanthropy. Through the beautiful and powerful images of photographer Charles W. Thomas, Jr., the book produces new thoughts and ideas on giving as it explores giving traditions grounded in faith, mutuality, responsibility and social justice. The award-winning book has been so transformational that it has even inspired an exhibit, “The Soul of Philanthropy,” which has been shown in several cities in museums, cultural centers and campuses and is preparing to launch in November in Atlanta. The exhibit presents stories of generosity among Americans of African descent. Centuries-old cultural customs and beliefs about giving, though rarely acknowledged as philanthropy in Black communities, have long been an integral and transformational force in lives and communities throughout American society, according to the exhibit’s press release. “When envisioning the Soul of Philanthropy, we set out to reimagine content from ‘Giving Back’ and present it anew, rather than simply replicating the book on a museum wall,” said the author and exhibit creator. “We published the book in 2011, and from that work provocative questions and fresh ideas have emerged. As a result, The Soul of Philanthropy is designed to cover new ground, to plumb beneath the surface of why and how people give and to spur generosity borne of the heart, hands, mind and soul, in concert. So while the book serves as a moving tribute, the exhibit and its public programming are meant to compel us toward a triumphant movement of conscious giving for social change. The exhibit is a reminder that philanthropy is deeper than your pockets.” The traveling exhibit was made through the support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, through a partnership with Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) and the giving circle New Generation of African American Philanthropists. The inaugural exhibit was at JCSU in 2015. Fullwood said, “This exhibit illuminates the human impulse to show compassion, to progress, to see fairness, to connect with others and to love. We have composed an experience where the images glow, the stories, enlighten and the desire to give back is set afire. We want everyone to embrace and act on the fact that we each have the capacity to give more and wiser.” For more information on the exhibit and its location, visit: thesoulofphilanthrophy.com Be a philanthropist by purchasing a ticket to the Chicago Football Classic. August 26 marks the 97th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing a woman’s right to vote. Two leaders of that fight were Sojourner Truth and Ida B. Wells. Fighting for equal rights is nothing new for Black women. From the beginning we stood along side our men fighting for the advancement and dignity of African-Americans and along side White women for the right to vote. Born into slavery in 1797, Sojourner Truth was fighting for women’s rights before Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul were born. Devoting her life to the Methodist Religion, Truth was a traveling preacher and an early women’s rights advocate. As we celebrate Woman Suffrage, it is only right to recognize the Black women who took leadership roles in the fight for equal rights often in opposition of Black men and White women. Truth is best known for her speech before the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in May 1851. Not able to read or write, the first reference to her “Ain’t I A Woman” speech was published in “The Anti-Slavery Bugle” newspaper. Historians say it’s unlikely Truth spoke with a Southern dialect, since she was born in Ulster County, New York, and her first slave master and language were Dutch. In Chicago, Ida B. Wells founded the first suffrage club of African-American women in the United States. The Alpha Suffrage Club of Chicago was formed ahead of the planned Women’s Suffrage Parade in Washington, D.C., March 3, 1913. It’s reported the membership grew from hundreds to thousands in less than 10 years. Wells, who was best known for her investigative journalism exposing government sanctioned lynching of African-American men throughout the South, did not see civil rights and women’s rights as separate, but equal. Consequently, Wells often found herself at odds with White women who resented passage of the 15th Amendment in 1869, giving Black men the right to vote before women. Suffragist Susan B. Anthony once said, “I will cut off this right arm of mine before I will ever work or demand the ballot for the Negro and not the woman.” Not one to hide her true feelings, Wells drew the ire of her fellow suffragists when in a speech she asked how influential White women could continue to turn a blind eye to the White mobs who threatened Black lives. Despite the betrayal Wells felt, she continued to fight on both fronts. During the movement’s pivotal march on Washington, Wells refused to walk behind the Illinois delegation. When posed with an ultimatum, she chose not to march. As the parade progressed, however, Wells took her place between two White Illinois delegates. Three years later, Wells led a contingent of Black suffragists in the 1916 Chicago parade, during the Republican National Convention. In 1930, Wells became the first African-American woman to run for public office. A year after her unsuccessful bid for state senate, she died of kidney failure. Almost 100 years later, Black women are still the unsung heroines paving the way for their White sisters and Black brothers. www.chicagodefender.com

Chicago Radio Broadcasters Supports Red Cross Efforts In Houston, Texas More than 30 Chicagoland radio stations will simultaneously air a :60 second radio spot to support the efforts of the American Red Cross as they work to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas and across the Gulf Coast on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 4:29 pm. “The Radio Broadcasters of Chicagoland (RBC) are proud to unite as a group to help the people of Houston impacted by the devastating floods. We urge all Chicagoans to contribute to the relief efforts that are so desperately needed,” said Matt Scarano, Chairman of Illinois Broadcasters Association’s Radio Broadcasters of Chicagoland Committee. “We are using the power of radio in both English and Spanish, to help out those in need. In a time of crisis, Chicago Radio is willing to help in any way we can.” The American Red Cross is currently helping the people affected by Hurricane Harvey by supplying shelter, warm meals, and truck-loads of supplies, along with hope to the areas hurt by Harvey. The Red Cross estimates that they will shelter over 55,000 people in the days after the storm with the number to grow as the storm moves across the Gulf Coast. The need for financial support will continue for weeks, months and years. “What a great idea for the Radio Broadcasters of Chicagoland to apply their winning roadblock formula in building instantaneous public awareness to the immediate needs of the Red Cross in helping victims of Hurricane Harvey.” said Dennis Lyle, president and CEO of the Illinois Broadcasters Association. “Doing so is yet another reflection of the care and concern local broadcasters have for their community and communities beyond.” Chicago Radio Drives Real Results, an ongoing initiative to demonstrate the power of radio, was first introduced in 2016 with a 30-minute live conversation broadcast across 47 radio stations with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a Chicago Radio Town Hall Meeting. The conversation was heard by one-third of Chicago’s population, according to NielHouston family members of Chicago Defender staff checks in with photos of the devastation. sen. Trevor: A Musical of Emotional Depth Writers Theatre presents the World Premier of Trevor The Musical Directed by Marc Bruni August 9 – September 17, 2017 By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play The year was 1981 and music and technology were rapidly changing the way we viewed the world. Ronald Reagan was our president and MTV was launched on cable television. IBM released the original 5150 IBM PC and Lady Diana Spencer married The Prince of Wales, Brenda and Rick McCain which inspired young girls around the world to dream that one day they could marry a prince. However, there was another Diana

who had a great influence on not only girls but a young fellow by the name of Trevor! “Trevor the musical” is a coming-ofage story based on a 13-year-old boy in junior high school who is a passionate fan of Diana Ross and who has an unusual infatuation for the celebrity icon. His effervescent imagination leads him on a wonder about self-discovery as he deals with adolescence and everything that goes with it, such as his identity. Dealing with junior high alone can be cumbersome, but when you couple this with finding your true identity and middle school kids, anarchy is bound to happen. Trevor’s journey of discovery not only causes him to struggle with his sexuality towards the opposite sex but with his feelings for a particular classmate by the name of Pinky Faraday. Pinky is the most popular kid in the school, and Trevor can’t seem to stop thinking or writing about him and his imagination sometimes goes beyond the norm. Unfortunately, when his crush is discovered, Trevor gets bullied and ridiculed. Regrettably, with the pressure of living in a time when the world wasn’t ready to accept the discovery of one’s inner feelings, Trevor, feeling abandoned, tries to take his

Salisha Thomas as Diana Ross in “Trevor” own life. Strongly influenced by the music of Diana Ross, Salisha Thomas (playing Ross) embodies the singer by belting out classic songs such as “Do You Know,” “‘Aint No Mountain High Enough” and “I’m Coming Out.” Trevor gradually perseveres with Ross’ guidance to learn to love himself in spite of what everyone thinks. Eli Tokash is a star of the future! Trevor (Eli Tokash), acting beyond his years, does an exceptional job grappling with what a young adolescent boy goes through when he is trying to find himself. This young actor entertained us with amusement and humanism without missing a beat of the realness of the story. He will be a name you won’t forget and a rising star of the future. Director Marc Bruni brought the Oscar-winning 1994 American short film directed by Peggy Rajski to life with a fantastic cast of young individuals. Kudos to him for getting the story out regarding an issue that so many youth are going through today. “Trevor” was a nostalgic piece of work that took us back to our adolescent years where heartaches, peer pressure, and bullying was at the forefront of our daily lives-when we were just trying so eagerly to fit in. We recommend that you take a look at this play at Writers Theatre, where you will find that even when you want to give up, you will learn that love conquers all and 10 August 30 - September 5, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Your child’s dreams are like stars: If he chooses them as his guides, he can reach his destiny.

BORN TO BE GREAT By 2020, 65 percent of all jobs will require postsecondary education and training beyond high school. Jobs in healthcare, community services, and STEM will grow the fastest among occupational clusters. Previously, courses teaching higher-order thinking skills like critical thinking and problem solving were reserved for the economically advantaged and “gifted and talented.”

No child is ever destined for failure and the federal government has a responsibility to invest in the success of every student. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that acquisition of those higher-order thinking skills be the standard for every student but your involvement is needed to make those requirements realities. IN THE MIXX

In the MIXX: Hurricane Harvey Relief, Legislators Pass Education Funding Bill and Labor Day Weekend Fun By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Hurricane Katrina Flashbacks Unless you’ve been under a huge rock, then you’re aware of the flood devastation currently ripping through the south Texas region. Warnings of Hurricane Harvey by various weather forecasters last week was no secret as to how serious such a Mary L. Datcher storm could get. Although, it’s easy to criticize the ‘should’ve, would’ve, could’ve’ mandatory evacuation call from Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner—no one could predict mother nature’s fury. Much more could’ve lost their lives on roads that are receptive to flash floods. It is a sad reminder of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina over a decade ago when the country witnessed thousands of New Orleans residents helpless and trapped. We pray for the rescue of those who are suffering from the loss and awaiting assistance to safer ground. The Red Cross along with community organizations, churches, and local government agencies are over extended and will need as much help in the coming months. Houston and other towns in the Texas region opened their arms to the victims of Hurricane Katrina with many Louisiana residents unable to return. Now, the fourth largest city in the US is faced with the same situation, and the images that flash across our screens should pull every humanitarian effort from each of us as fellow Americans. For immediate donations, it’s as simple as a click away by texting ‘HARVEY’ to 90999. A modest donation of $10 or higher will go towards the Red Cross assistance efforts in helping people with essentials— water, bandages, blankets, clothes, baby formula, food and other needed items. Illinois School Education Funding Bill On Monday, the Illinois House assembly approved an education funding bill that would authorize monies for school districts and approve taxpayer dollars towards private school vouchers. The $75 million tax credit program allows parents to steer children to private schools with the assistance of tax dollars. A move that is supported by Gov. Bruce Rauner and Republican legislators but deeply opposed by the Chicago Teachers Union. The first attempt on passing the bill failed but with floor hustling between Dems and GOP leaders, the second goaround narrowly acquired the votes needed to pass the bill. House Speaker Mike Madigan didn’t exactly get what they had hoped, overriding Gov. Rauner’s veto of the initial school funding bill but passed with 73-34 with added stipulations. The

King of Pop, Michael Jackson remembered on Aug. 29 following day, Illinois Senate passed the bill landing on Rauner’s desk where he is expected to sign off. The school districts received funding with the possibility of CPS receiving $450 million but not without additional property taxes imposed on the city of Chicago taxpayers. Over the last decade, both private and Catholic schools have raised their tuition based on more school choices available for families that allow monies to shift elsewhere. With the pathway of vouchers utilized for private institutions, the threat of more CPS school closings is real if student enrollment continues to drop. When neighborhood schools close, communities suffer while property values decline and economic development are drastically slowed down. We continue to witness Black communities affected from the 2011 CPS closings despite reports of academic improvement—students must return to their environment—walking past empty school buildings. Illinoisans are somewhat relieved that both parties reached a bi-partisan alliance this week but to whose expense? Does this help or slowly chip away at the infrastructure of our communities for the benefits of private benefactors invested in the school choice network? We’ll stay alert as the story unfolds.

James Comey By Paul Holston Howard University News Service WASHINGTON - Former FBI director James Comey will be making his next move to Howard University as a lecturer for the historically Black college in the upcoming 2017-2018 academic year. This will be the first time Comey is employed by a historically Black college or university (HBCU). Comey will also be delivering the opening convocation address this year. In an official press release published by Howard, Comey will engage the Howard community through a lecture series, and he will also address the university Sept. 22 as this year’s opening convocation speaker. In addition to being appointed, Comey will be donating his entire $100,000 King Chair compensation to a Howard University scholarship fund that will support students coming from a foster home environment. “I am pleased to welcome Mr. Comey to Howard,” Howard University President Wayne A.I. Frederick said in the statement. “His expertise and understanding of the challenges we continue to face today will go a long way in sparking rich discussion and advancing meaningful debates across campus.” As the Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy,

Comey will conduct five lectures throughout the year that feature speakers on a variety of subjects. The topics will be determined after Comey consults with student leaders, faculty and other Howard members. “I am honored to hold the King Chair this school year,” Comey said in the statement. “Howard has a longstanding history of being a vibrant academic community and the perfect place to have rich dialogue on many of the most pressing issues we face today. I look forward to contributing to this remarkable institution and engaging students and faculty alike.” The relationship building between Howard and Comey is not new. Earlier in the year, before Comey was fired by President Donald Trump, Frederick was invited to speak to FBI employees in honor of Black History Month to emphasize the critical role of HBCUs under the topic “Success Through Education.” Comey has been in the news recently after being fired by Trump in May for what Trump said at the time was recommendations from the Justice Department. A month after his firing, Comey testified on Capitol Hill that he believed his firing was to relieve pressure on Trump’s administration over the ongoing investigation of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. www.chicagodefender.com

HEALTH

Coconut Oil, Saturated Fat, and Your Health By Joel Kahn, MD FACC VeryWell.com

Colon Cancer Symptoms Every Woman Should Know By Ruthie Hawkins BlackDoctor.org Shannon Sylvain remembers the exact moment she received the call from her doctor that would change her life forever. “My doctor asked if I was sitting down,” Sylvain recalled in an interview with Essence. “After telling her yes, I remember her voice cracking when she explained that they saw evidence of colon cancer during the procedure.” Sylvain was 31 years old when she was diagnosed with colorectal (colon) cancer. Something often missing from the colon cancer conversation is women, but according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Black women have the highest rate of developing colon cancer out of all women. Overall, Black men have the highest rate of getting colon cancer amongst all races. While the risk is slightly lower for women, colon cancer remains the third leading cause of cancer deaths among White, Black, and Asian women — right behind breast and lung cancer, the CDC reports. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute discovered that there’s been a steady increase in the number of colon and rectal cancers among young people. Per the findings, people born in 1990 have twice the risk of colon cancer and four times the risk of rectal cancer when compared to those born in 1950. But, there is a silver lining. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms – if you catch the signs early. So, what are the signs? www.chicagodefender.com

Blood in your pee or stool While in most cases blood in your pee or stool is associated with hemorrhoids — clumps of enlarged blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum — it can also be a symptom of colon cancer. Bloody urine may also signal cancer of the bladder. Stomach cramping It’s not just bloating or gas. If you’re experiencing tenderness, nausea, crazy cramping or vomiting, along with the urge to take a dump – but are unable to, this could signal a more serious problem. That’s because polyps or tumors can slowly bleed into the digestive tract, robbing you of red blood cells and iron needed to carry oxygen to your body. This eventually leads to iron-deficiency anemia, which can make you feel drained and short of breath. Fortunately, a simple blood test can pinpoint whether you have a love red blood cell count – often the first sign of colorectal cancer. Extreme fatigue Sure, living a hectic life can lead to extreme fatigue. But extreme tiredness that won’t let up isn’t normal. If your fatigue isn’t letting up and you have other symptoms, such as blood in your stool, consult a doctor. Problematic poop Polyps or tumors associated with colon cancer may also change the consistency, shape, or frequency of bowel movements. For example, pencil thin poop happens when cancer obstructs the intestine. Constipation, diarrhea (that lasts more than 3 days), or feeling like you’re backed up, even after a bowel movement, are other possible signs of colorectal cancer, the Colon Cancer Coalition says.

Considering the recent barrage of headlines regarding adding coconut oil to your diet for health (some pro, some con), you might imagine that the average consumption of coconut oil in the United States was on par with that of milk or cheese. In reality, the numbers seem to indicate otherwise. Coconut consumption per capita in the United States is about 1.5 pounds a year (that includes oil and all other products). By contrast, cheese consumption amongst Americans is about 35 pounds per year—more than 20 times higher. Even more impressive is the statistic that, in 2014 in the United States, the average consumption of animal flesh (red meat, poultry, shellfish, and fish) was 181 pounds per citizen, or 100 times more than coconut. And to top it all off, we ate 239 pounds of dairy (excluding cheese) per year per capita, or 150 times the humble coconut. Plaque Psoriasis: Get Informed Ninety percent of all psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. While it affects nearly 5 million Americans, and is slightly more common in men, the skin condition is treatable. Given the news coverage, you might have thought that all the American Heart Association addressed was the topic of coconut oil. Hardly a whimper has been heard in the press about the detailed analysis concluding that reducing foods rich in animal saturated fats and replacing them with plant-based substitutes, particularly as it relates to choosing a vegetable oil over butter or lard, was the most important recommendation. Media seemed to zero in on a single paragraph that said, “because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD, and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil.” That was it—just 25 words and four scientific references out of thousands of words, 25 pages, and nearly 200 references included in the document. Cuckoo for Coconut Oil In my opinion, the AHA advisors were responsible in highlighting the potential health risks of adding coconut oil into the diet. The ingredient has been dubiously advocated by many fitness and nutrition advisors and garnered a place in many people’s diets that it doesn’t really deserve. However, you probably do not eat all that much coconut oil to begin with.

Highlighting this as the takeaway of this advisory shifts attention away from what you should really focus on to improve the odds that you will remain free of heart disease. Here are some comments and conclusions from the AHA paper that you likely haven’t heard in your evening news report—information that is far more important than the headlines about coconut oil. Cheese Isn’t Special: The Presidential Advisory evaluated the role of cheese, a food high in animal saturated fat. It has been suggested that, because cheese is fermented before eating, it may not affect heart disease risk as much as other, non-fermented dairy products. The researchers’ conclusion? There is no data to support this. It would be prudent to cut down or cut out full-fat dairy as a strategy to reduce your dietary intake of animal saturated fat. There are many tasty cheese-like products, some quite elegant and mimicking Brie, Camembert, and other favorites, made from nuts and seeds available in grocery stores and online. Watch Your Intake of Full-fat Milk and Butter: Though you probably couldn’t tell from the headlines, the authors had opinions that favored reducing or replacing these items to lower your intake of animal saturated fat. This is an important message for your health. The long-term reduction in heart attack and heart death risk that comes with swapping butter and high-fat milk for alternatives lower or free of animal saturated fat, like almond milk and vegetable oil spreads, favors your heart health, too. Don’t Forget About Meat Meat consumption was not specifically discussed in detail by the AHA Advisory. As you may be aware, animal meats, both red and white, whether processed and unprocessed, have high amounts of saturated fats. Indeed, four of the top 10 sources of saturated fats in the diet are meat, particularly bacon and chicken. If you want to transition your diet to a more heart healthy one, reducing or eliminating meats is advisable. Try to eat less meat, butter, and cheese, and find replacements like beans, vegetable oil spreads free of trans fats, and nutbased cheeses. Add in more fruits and vegetables to every meal and as snacks. And if you want to use coconut oil in your smoothie and you are free of heart disease and diabetes mellitus, use a pinch (not a pound).

Stand. Colin Kaepernick defiance catching fire with supporters By Keith A. Owens Senior Editor Michigan Chronicle

Phillips Sr. Quarterback J’Bore Gibbs

Phillips stuns Loyola in Season Opener by Terrence Tomlin The Bigs Media The Phillips Wildcats 2017 football season kicked off with a bang under the bright lights of Gately Stadium this past Saturday evening. Taking on the Catholic league powerhouse, Loyola Ramblers, the Wildcats were looking to send a message that they will be a force to be reckon with this year. Scoring 3 touchdowns on the way to a 20-14 victory, Wildcats senior quarterback J’Bore Gibbs helped his team send that message loud and clear. “We just wanted to come out on the field and give our ALL, really.” Gibbs said. “I was talking to my brothers before the game and I preached that we have to just play our brand of football. Wildcats football.” he continued. The first half found the two football powerhouses stuck in a defensive struggle, with both squads picking up early turnovers and struggling to move the ball on the offensive end. But Gibbs charged the early ineffectiveness to jitters. “It was the first half, of the first game, of the last season for some of the guys on the team so I charge a lot of that to jitters. We have been a team that, over the last couple years is known to come out in the 2nd half and show out.” And show out they did! Picking up a TD on the first drive of the 2nd half, Phillips added to their 1 point halftime lead and never looked back. “Coming out in the 2nd half we really fowww.chicagodefender.com

cused on getting our assignments down key. Coach was telling me what plays we were going to run in the locker room so I already had an idea in my mind of how we were going to play and the coverage I was going to see and it all played out on the field in the 2nd half.” The importance of J’Bore’s three touchdowns were magnified as the game came down to a goal line stand. With the Wildcats leading 20-14 , Loyola made one final push to snatch the game from the grips of Phillips. Driving hard, with the ball inside of the 3 yard line on 4th and goal and 4 seconds remaining on the clock, the Ramblers failed to convert and the Wildcats’ first victory of the season was sealed. “I knew our defense was going to hold it down,” J’Bore said. “They hold it down all the time, everyday. They hold it down on me in practice so I expected them to do the same with the game on the line. They are the number one defense in the state if you ask me.” With one “win” in the books, J’Bore stressed that the best is yet to come and that the season is a marathon, not a sprint. “This was a huge win, most definitely, but we just have to keep our poise. Keep our humbleness. It’s just the first game, we have a whole lot of the season left, 13 more games to be exact. Lord willing. So we just come out next week and try to play better than we did this week.” The Phillips Wildcats take on Richards in next week’s matchup.

So often this is how it starts; one man or woman decides they simply cannot take it anymore. So they don’t. Next thing you know, a movement has begun. Such is the case with Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, who made the decision last season to kneel during the National Anthem rather than stand with the rest of his teammates. Kaepernick had grown sick and tired of the excessive amount of police brutality being routinely visited upon battered black bodies in America, and so he protested in a way he figured would attract the most attention. In that, he most certainly succeeded. Stories about Kaepernick’s protest, and photos of him kneeling during the National Anthem, dominated the news cycles and talk shows for weeks. Fast forward to 2017, and Kaepernick is back in the headlines – and in the middle of controversy. To date, Kaepernick, now a free agent, still has not been signed to a contract with any NFL team. Supporters believe strongly this is because the NFL considers him a radioactive negro ever since he became political. Just last Wednesday, Chicago club owner Kenny Johnson, a strong supporter of Kaepernick’s protest, decided to launch a protest of his own. Until Kaepernick is signed, neither of his establishments – The Bureau Bar and The Velvet Lounge will show any NFL football games on any of their large TV screens. Both are within minutes of Soldier Field and would stand to benefit greatly from the considerable amount of football traffic. “I was literally sitting in my bar and I had decided to do it, and then I just posted to all our social media sites that we were boycotting until Colin got signed. Because we believed in what he was doing,” said Johnson. “We have such a big violence problem going on right now in Chicago with police killing unarmed black men. It resonates here very loudly. When we had that big incident here with LaQuan McDonald shot 16 times, that really kind of put a spotlight here in Chicago. And I have two sons, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. I talk to my sons about standing up for what you believe in, and with no fear of repercussion. “This was a way I could support him in a bigger way than just giving money to his foundation. …And I hope other bar owners will do the same, especially African American bar owners,” although that support has yet to materialize. In the beginning it was just Kaepernick, all on his own, as the shower of abuse, ridicule and outrage rained down.

And not all of that outrage was from white people either. More than a few black people – prominent black people – made a point of expressing their disgust, and questioning why Kaepernick was being so anti-patriotic. What they were really asking, truth be told, was why would Kaepernick insist on making the race look bad. But then others began to kneel. And then came more. And now, this season, after it seemed like last year’s protest was likely to fade, Kaepernick’s stand against police brutality is once again catching fire due to the apparent cowardice of the NFL which figured they could silently ban Kaepernick from the league by collectively agreeing not to sign him. And just like that, the protests heated up all over again. Many were wondering how could Kaepernick keep getting passed over and ignored – even to the point of dragging a mediocre quarterback out of retirement – simply because he was willing to take a stand against the brutalization of black bodies by those supposedly sworn to protect those bodies? So far, Kaepernick has been joined publicly by nearly 30 fellow NFL protesters, including Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, defensive end Khalil Mack, Seattle Seahawks Michael Bennett, center Justin Britt, cornerback Jeremy Lane, and 11 Cleveland Brown players. In addition to his fellow ballers, the NAACP wrote a letter to the NFL to address the situation, and last week a rally of more than 1,000 Kaepernick supporters protested in front of the NFL’s New York headquarters. “There’s been a lot of support, you can go on our media page, but then there’s been a lot of non-black folks that have responded crazy about it, you know? You ain’t s---, your bar’s gonna go out of business, we’re gonna buy your bar when you’re done, you should keep the politics out of your bar business, all sorts of stuff,” said Johnson. Johnson expects that Kaepernick will eventually be signed, but if he doesn’t then he is prepared for the long haul as an NFL-free zone. “It’ll hurt a little bit, but we’ll figure out some other creative ways to entertain people while they’re in the bar,” he said. “We’ll still be open, but we just won’t have football on, so it’ll be interesting to see how people respond when they don’t see the football games on when they’re walking to the games. It’ll hurt a little, but we’ll get by. If you think what you’re doing is right, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. If you want to speak up, that’s your right to protest.”
