The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Engineering has received a grant to provide scholarships, mentoring and internship opportunities to academically-talented, low-income engineering undergraduates. The goal of the scholarship program is to have students graduate into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) advanced degree programs or secure jobs in STEM fields within six months of leaving UIC. The $975,000 National Science Foundation grant will support a total of 30 incoming freshmen engineering students who start in either fall 2018 or fall 2019. Students from low-income households will be encouraged to apply for the scholarship program based on their high school grades and ACT or SAT scores. The UIC College of Engineering designed the new program in response to growing evidence suggesting that students from low-income backgrounds have lower graduation rates and are less likely to find jobs in their respective fields than their peers from higher-income families. In addition to providing scholarships toward tuition estimated to average $5,000 per student, scholars selected for the program will participate in activities in the summer before their first fall semester at UIC. In the summer bridge program, scholars will be matched with a student and a faculty mentor who will provide academic guidance, as well as an industry mentor who will provide career guidance. Scholars will also participate in paid summer internships either at a UIC engineering lab, or in one of more than 100 Chicago area companies. www.chicagodefender.com

The New Young Black Expats: A Conversation With Millennials Who Live Abroad By Steven Ballard Defender Guest Writer In 1936, the first copies of The Negro Motorist Green Book were published to help African-Americans traveling the country to find the safest places to eat, sleep or even get a haircut. Eighty years later, African-American Millennials are experiencing the progress provided by our ancestors and traveling the world without a need for the Green Book. The more young African-Americans travel, the more leaders are created with better practices and solutions for our local communities at home. According to the Nielson Report, there are 11.4 million African-American Millennials in the United States. They account for 25 percent of the overall African-American population. There are many young Millennials who are going out there and living the dream. We all have different stories, methods, reasons and thoughts about actually traveling and living abroad, and we have all been successful. As young travelers, we have been blazing new trails and making inroads into a better tomorrow. But more than just leisure travelers, we are actually talking about “expats,” short for expatriates. The original definition of an expatriate is: one who is exiled from his or her native country. Over the years, the meaning has changed to one who simply lives outside his or her native country for an extended period of time. Expats do not take intermittent week- or month-long trips to another country; we live there for a year or more. Expat Steven Ballad caught up with some other young www.chicagodefender.com
Nika Bowens in China. people who have spent several years outside of the United States and talked with them about their experiences. The Fear Almost everyone has fears of going abroad. Trent Lawrence’s fear was that he would get ill in a foreign land and no one would help him. All fears are rational and logical, but the one thing that all of the young millennial travelers have in common is that they went on and braved their fears and made it abroad. One common fear that people tend to have is that they think they will not be understood. The theory that you have to speak the native language in order to go to any-
where that is not the United States and the United Kingdom keeps some people from going to the exotic places of their dreams. The truth of the matter is that a lot of countries already have some level of English in their lexicon. Similar to how we have to learn a second language in the States, most countries have their students learn a second language, which tends to be English. “Turkey. I feel like more people there spoke English, at least in Istanbul. And my experience with Turkish people too…a lot of them are more worldly and have traveled abroad,” said Nika Bowens. Another fear is fear of the unknown. The old saying, “the evil that you don’t know is scarier than the evil that you do,” comes into play with a lot of us and it keeps us from moving forward. “I think that I was scared of…just being a teenager and not being around something so comfortable. [Not] being around my family, [not] being around my friends and [not] being able to hang out with them when I want to,” said Elicia Bibbs. To conquer the fear, these traveling millennials say: Look at travel as a new opportunity to discover. Break outside of your comfort zone and be willing to look at new places with open eyes. You will not be disappointed. The Money According to The New York Times Magazine in 2014: “One in five people in their 20s and early 30s is currently living at home with his or her parents. And 60 percent of all young adults receive financial support from them.” This is one option to help save and finance future travel ventures. So many countries and so many flights, our young travelers found different ways to pay. “…[Some of my] trips were financed through programs. For example, I was selected to participate in a program called the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations which basically chooses 24 fellows from around the world and I was one of two [North] Americans chosen for this program and they basically paid all of our expenses…” Lawrence said. “I had a savings account and I realized I needed to stop spending money…I would also look at the cheapest times to fly there…” Bowens offered. “I am the first person in my family to travel abroad, but I was given the opportunity through this wonderful organi continued on page 8

Rev. Jeremiah Wright To Receive Legacy Award
State Senator Kwame Raoul Makes a Bid for Illinois Attorney General By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer
Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright On Friday, October 13, the McCormick Theological Seminary will present Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright with their Legacy of Leadership award. The award celebrates “transformational leaders whose ministries and voices have empowered and inspired communities of faith,” and will be given to Dr. Wright during the Seminary’s gala event at the South Shore Cultural Center. Before retiring in 2008, Wright served as pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC) for 36 years, during which he grew the membership of the church from 100 to over 6,000, wrote numerous books and articles, and began the “Ministers in Training” program at TUCC. Additionally, during his tenure, and later through the tenure of Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, dozens of members of the TUCC congregation matriculated through the McCormick Seminary, received reimbursements on tuition, and in 2016, McCormick and Wright launched a doctor of ministry program called the “Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Scholars: African-Centered Religious Thought and Ministry.”
Referencing this long history of collaboration, David H. Crawford, president of McCormick, said of Wright, “McCormick Theological Seminary is grateful for the decades-long relationship we have had with Dr. Wright and the amazing pastors, staff, and members of Trinity United Church of Christ… We are, therefore, grateful for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful event that honors the life and prophetic ministry of the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright.” The event begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets start at $175. Registration is available online at mccormick.edu. Rev. Dr. Frederick Haynes will be the emcee and Moss and his wife, Monica, will serve as honorary co-chairs. Wright is globally known for his leading-edge efforts as a pastoral theologian and as a reformist. Wright served in the Marine Corps as well as the United States Navy. He earned bachelors and master’s degrees from Howard University after his time in the military. He earned another master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divini-

Last week, on the heels of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s announcement of not seeking another term in office, State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago 13th) formally announced his candidacy for Illinois Attorney General on Wednesday. In an official announcement released, Raoul said: “As a prosecutor and a legislator, I’ve spent my career advocating on behalf of vicKwame Raoul tims, speaking up for the voiceless and producing real change in our justice system. I’ve seen the law used to the advantage of large corporations and to the detriment of the middle class and those of lesser means. I’ve worked to shift that balance and make our state’s laws the great equalizer they ought to be,” said Raoul. He continues: “As Attorney General, I’ll put my problem-solving and advocacy experience to work to ensure that justice in Illinois is blind, never discriminating between city, suburban and Downstate, between brown, black and white or between rich and poor. I am running to restore balance so that political gamesmanship is no match for the rule of law, under which all are equal.” Before Raoul’s announcement, Congressman Danny K. Davis let the cat out of the bag. Davis issued the following statement: “I don’t think we could find a better person to be Illinois’ next Attorney General than Senator Raoul to protect and promote consumer protection and the public interest. Lisa Madigan was great and Kwame Raoul will be just as good or better.” The race for the highest state office in law and justice turns up a dial as GOP candidate Ericka Harold released her long list of Republican supporters including House Minority Leader Jim Durkin. “Erika Harold had the courage to enter the race before Lisa Madigan withdrew and that is the type of courage needed to challenge the status quo. I am going to do everything I can to make sure she becomes our next Attorney General,” he said. On Monday, it was reported Sharon Fairley, chief administrator of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), will resign to take on her bid for the highest public law office in the state. www.chicagodefender.com

The Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans Host Fair to Benefit Minority-and Women-Owned Businesses
Small business owner Joyce Scott had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with several Medicaid providers at the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans’ annual Business Enterprise Program (BEP) fair held at the Kroc Center, 1250 W. 119th St. Lisa Harrell, president & CEO, AMD Business Solutions, Inc., was one of the panelists to speak at the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans’ annual Business Enterprise Program (BEP) fair held at the Kroc Center, 1250 W. 119th St. By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Auburn Gresham native Joyce Scott, an independent representative in the financial services industry, learned of the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans’ annual Business Enterprise Program (BEP) fair held at the Kroc Center, 1250 W. 119th St., while listening to WVON 1690 AM and immediately decided to sign up to learn more about opportunities to expand her business. “I’m a small business owner but I want to be a large business owner,” said Scott with a laugh. “I wanted to connect with Next Level Health and some of these other healthcare providers so this gave me the opportunity to do exactly that.” The IAMHP is a membership organization of health plans that participates in Medicaid managed care in Illinois, according to its website. The BEP is an initiative through the Illinois Department of Central Management Services designed to assist businesses whose majority owners are minorities, women, or disabled United States citizens with companies that do not produce annual sales exceeding $75 million. BEP hopes to increase these businesses capacity, grow revenue, and enhance credentials, according to its website. The purpose of the fair was to assist BEP businesses develop long-term partnerships and increase the likelihood of business opportunities with health plan representatives. Scott was not the only one with the idea to attend the fair; in fact, the event had standing room only and was filled with opportunity seekers looking to partner with a few of the biggest health providers in Illinois. Scott said that she was “absolutely” satisfied with all that she saw and learned while attending the event. Specifically, she learned that she must be certified with the state of Illinois to be on their list as a professional services
supplier. Samantha Olds Frey, executive director of Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans, explained her organization made an effort to partner with local vendors to make sure the event was accessible to the general public. “In this room we have vendors who are partnering with the state to serve today over 2 million people, and this time next year it will be 2.8 million people,” said Frey. “We are looking to create and foster strong partnerships with businesses that are operated by women, black and brown families because those are the people we are serving.” Frey was steadfast in her support of Medicaid in response to the speculation that the Trump Administration and Congress will pass laws that will significantly impact the healthcare industry. “We have to remember these are people, not just a number on a spreadsheet,” said Frey. “We are committed to the Medicaid program and the stabilization of the Medicaid program. We believe that the expansion that has given healthcare to over 700,000 people in the state is crucial not only to those families but to the entire state. It is an economic driver.” Lisa Harrell, president & CEO, AMD Business Solutions, Inc., a human resources consulting firm, sat on a panel held during the fair and spoke with the Defender afterwards about how minority and women owned businesses partnering with larger corporations may impact local communities. “A large number of the small businesses we live and breathe in our communities, we are a part of that fabric; and so when small businesses succeed in the communities, we then give back to the communities that we service, period,” said Harrell. “Holding the large organizations accountable that service these communities because we have a greater voice, we’re that touch point for them. We have to have a seat at this table so we can make a greater

impact to our communities.” Harrell responded to the notion that the Trump Administration and Congress may impact the health provider industry by stating people cannot get “caught up in the noise.” She suggested when dealing with any change: focus on what you know, acknowledge how you feel about it, take control of what you can, leave the rest alone, and execute a plan. “For small business owners, we have businesses to run,” said Harrell. “There’s no immediate daily impact on what we do so we need to continue to run our businesses. Change is all around us, period. One of the best things about working with a small business is we’ve built up that muscle of resiliency.” Colleen Miller, senior manager of Communications & Media at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL), provided the Defender with this statement about her company’s support of minority- and women-owned businesses: “Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois actively seeks out opportunities to partner with minority-owned, women-owned and other diverse companies. By promoting diversity in our supply chain, we can help create a positive economic impact in the communities we serve,” said Miller. “Our Corporate Supplier Diversity Team seeks out new partners at events such as the recent Business Enterprise Program Fair held by the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans. It gives us a chance to meet diverse suppliers face-to-face, explain our procurement process, our registration portal and generally how to do business with us.” Miller shared that businesses interested in connecting with BCBSIL that won’t be able to attend an in-person event should visit this website for more information about opportunities: http://hcsc.com/supplier_diversity.html. Teach For America & ILEE Partner To Host Informational Town Hall on DACA By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Community organizers for Teach For America’s Chicago-Northwest Indiana region and Illinois for Educational Equity (ILEE) are hosting an informational town hall to provide information about the nation’s immigration policy on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Chavez Elementary Multicultural Academy, 4747 S. Marshfield Ave. The town hall comes in the aftermath of President Donald Trump’s stunning announcement that he would be putting an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. Organizers intend to quell speculation and fear that misinformation from Trump’s announcement has caused by providing a safe and secure place to get answers, voice opinions, join with allies, and more. Taylor Beale, ILEE Community Organizer, said more than 10,000 families will be impacted by DACA being rescinded including 190 teachers. She said the uncertainty around immigration policy has put an “unbearable” amount of stress on those impacted, which is why the town hall was planned. She said one of the narratives she and others are battling against is one where Dreamers were brought to the United States because their parents committed a crime as opposed to the narrative where parents of different nations decided to bring their families to the United States in pursuit of a better life. “We wanted to make sure members are getting correct, updated information on that,” said Beale. “We are also speaking to community leaders who are already involved around this issue and leading the effort. We wanted to make sure that we are aware of the type of resources for themselves and that they can offer to their families and students who may directly be affected by this issue and that they also have an understanding as to how to be an ally in this work.” Beale clarified that concerns over DACA and related legislation is not limited to just the Latino community, in fact, African, Asian, Pacific Islander, and European communities are also swept up in the legislation. According to Beale, the town hall is scheduled to feature several testimonials from individuals impacted by DACA, details about federal legislation, a panel discussion, and more. She estimated 100 attendees will be present for the town hall - a number which may have grown since she spoke to the Defender over a week ago. Beale said there are active pieces of legislation in Congress that intend to address this issue. However, not all elected officials in Illinois are in support of DACA or related pieces of legislation. She noted that U.S. Representative Mike Bost (R-IL) among others have not lent his support. Rep. Bost released the following statement on his official website: “Policies are only as durable as the process through which they are created. The
confusion and uncertainty regarding the legal status of individuals affected by DACA is due in large part to the Obama administration’s insistence on sidestepping congressional authority. The House has already taken steps to make America safer, secure our borders and end sanctuary cities, but serious work remains. It is my sincere hope that the House and Senate, in coordination with the president, will find a just and reasonable solution for those affected by the DACA program, while also underscoring the importance of the rule of law.” Listed below are additional pieces of federal legislation that provide protections and/ or pathways to citizenship for undocumented individuals: American Hope Act of 2017 U.S. Representative Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) sponsored the American Hope Act of 2017 on July 28 which, according to its summary, will amend the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 by giving states the power to offer higher-education benefits to state residents regardless if they are documented United States citizens or otherwise. Also, the American Hope Act of 2017 requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to cease any attempts to remove an individual and changes an individual’s status if they arrived in the United States as a child before 2017. For more information on this the American Hope Act of 2017 visit: https://www.congress.gov/ bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3591 Recognizing America's Children Act Sponsored by U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) on March 9, according to its summary, the Recognizing America's Children Act calls for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to cease any attempts to remove any individual(s) and adjust their status to “conditional nonimmigrant” for an initial period of five years for an “alien” that fits a specific criteria. For more information on Recognizing America's Children Act visit: https://www. congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/housebill/1468 Dream Act of 2017 Sponsored by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on July 20, according to its summary, the Dream Act would call on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to cease any attempts to remove any individual(s) based on a series of requirements including being younger than 18 years old prior to arriving in the United States, living within the United States for four years prior to the bill’s enforcement, among others. zation call HighSight which gives underprivileged youths scholarships…, ” said Bibbs. “The phrase it takes a village comes to mind. I didn’t just pay nor did I save. My trips were and are a culmination of a lot of people’s efforts. This includes my parents, my parents’ friends, and myself, “ said Ballard There are many different ways to generate the finances needed to go abroad. You can do like Lawrence and Bibbs and find a program that will meet your needs. Bibbs was also a legal secretary and she spent a lot of her time doing what Bowens did--saving money and looking for the right opportunity to go abroad. Or you can ask for help. Success is often a group effort consisting of many moving parts. The Blackness Being people of color in America is definitely not an easy task. We have to objectively make a lot more conscious and subconscious decisions just to ensure survival. So, what about abroad? Is it worth spending all of that time, effort and money just to go some place to possibly be treated as badly as you are at home for no cost? We asked our young travelers did they think being Black would have negative repercussions in other countries? “Oh definitely! Especially coming from America with our mindset being about ethnicity…but you know you have to have a different mindset when you go to other countries because they weren’t raised the way we were raised…” said Bibbs. “Definitely the first time around. Especially being from Chicago and seeing how they do us all kinds of dirty on the news. I was worried that I would be seen as the new Black threat in China,” Ballard added. It has been our experience that the world sees us and treats us much better than our own country. Not only is it okay to be Black in other countries, it is often a good thing. The citizens of other countries empathize with our struggle of being people of color in America. “It’s funny because in Turkey I was actually treated very well. I mean they had some anti-American sentiment, but they would say point blank. ‘This is how we feel about White Americans,” Bowens said. “I hate to say this, but I feel Spain was way more open, I felt way freer in Spain than I ever felt in America…” Bibbs said. “I have never felt as much unconditional love simply for being Black from non-blacks as I did in South Korea,” Ballard offered. While we are in the beginning stages of what looks to be a turbulent presidency, it is important to remember that the world sees us as African-Americans. The world is filled with decent human beings who are understanding. As a Black person you are more likely to be pitied abroad than you are to be feared. There may be instances where na-
Elicia Bibbs in India. tives of another country ask you about the cop shootings that have actually plagued our people. You might see that your indignation will be followed with their indignation. Of course, sometimes you will get the occasional prejudice because the world is not always fair. In some other countries where they do single you out for having Black skin, it is because of their preconceived notions of Africans. Once you show them your American identification, you may receive preferential treatment. Each of the travelers has been on an amazing journey to many places across the world. One thing we all agree on is that you owe it to yourself to go abroad. If you don’t have the money, save, ask or both. Don’t be afraid of being Black abroad. Chances are being an African-American will work in your favor in another country. Afraid of the unknown, embrace change and realize that change is good. “Changes aren’t made by patterns. The only way to change your situation is to do something you might not be comfortable with,” Bibbs said. “One thing a friend once told me is: The best is yet to come,” said Lawrence. “Just because you [may] have instances of racism, it should not discourage you from having such a great experience,” Bowens added. “A mentor once told me that life is like a blank canvas and everything you do in your life will add another color to that canvas. So I say you owe it to yourself to make the most vibrant art piece possible,” Ballard said. Living abroad expands the mind. Young African-Americans should travel the world to expand their perspectives past the current climate in America. New perspectives will help us improve our own lives. “We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” - Anonymous Steven Ballard is a Global Teacher of English as a second language. He has a travel blog called Steven Worldwide. His goal is to encourage more African-American Millennials to live abroad. www.chicagodefender.com

Clark Atlanta University’s Next Chapter in Men’s Basketball: Darrell Walker By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Chicago native and former NBA player Darrell Walker is the head coach for Clark Atlanta University men’s basketball program. The Corliss High School graduate has headed up the program for nearly two years and returns home for a relaxing weekend for the 20th Annual Chicago Football Classic on the last weekend of September. Having played several years under NBA teams which included the New York Knicks and Washington Bullets (Wizards), he’s gone on to coach both in the WNBA and CBA leagues. Now, he enters a new chapter in his coaching career working with Clark Athletic Director J. Lin Dawson to transition the basketball program into a winning one. The Defender had a candid conversation with Walker on his influences from then-Corliss High School coach Don Young to his mentoring style. What makes coaching an HBCU team different from what you’ve experienced with being a part of other teams outside of the circles of Black college or universities. Walker: When you’re talking about a Division 2 program and HBCU school, Division 2 is the highest level you could go, you as a player and a coach so of course, there’s a big gap there. Often, the gap is the talent. Basketball has its x’s and o’s and you know you still got to have players to win the game. What is your strategy when you recruit? Walker: I take a look at the young man. Does he have character or does he have the grades? Is he a good player? Does he fit? [I look at] what I think senior basketball players should be and I go from there. I look at my program and then I talk to the parents. When I speak with college coaches, they seem to rely heavily on communicating with the new generation of players through social media. What’s your philosophy? Walker: I have not ventured out into the Twitter world although my SID and other people on campus really want me to do it. I just have not made that step forward because you have to understand, I tell my players what you put out on social media—it will be out there a hundred years from now. Social media can be a good thing and it could be a really bad thing. Do you feel that you will see the same result regardless of whether you are social media savvy or you take the traditional approach? Walker: No, I’m still getting guys e-mailing me and coaches calling me all the time. It’s funny how people can get your phone number. I’ve had no problem recruiting, none whatsoever. What did you take from playing with street ballers and how did you apply it when you went away to college? Walker: There were a lot of great players including Sonny Parker, Lloyd Betts and probably one of the greatwww.chicagodefender.com
Darrell Walker est players to come out of Chicago—Billy Harris. I had a chance to play a lot growing up in Chicago. At the time, everybody is coming out of Chicago from Tim Hardaway, Isiah Thompson and Doc Rivers and myself. We all had some talent and they talk about our toughness. When you talk to some of the younger players, do they understand that era. Walker: No, they don’t and that’s just the way it is these days. There’s an age gap there. One good thing about social media is that they can google you up. That works to my benefit. What are some of the changes that you put in place since you came on board with the basketball program. Walker: Well just try to change the culture from a losing culture to a winning culture to a team that everybody on campus in Atlanta could be proud of. Make sure that my guys went to class every day. My guys are respectful to elders and respectful to young women. My guys didn’t get into any trouble and my guys graduate. What are some of the components of what you found you’ve learned along the way that you can instill into players who are moving on to the next level in the next chapter in their life. Walker: Students should have a second avenue because it’s only 400 plus jobs in the NBA. You have to have another avenue and let’s just be honest, a lot of my guys are probably not going to play in the NBA. I have to talk to my guys all the time. I send my guys a group text about people getting in trouble, and people doing time. I’m just trying to groom good young men to go out into the world and become successful. Is there a plan that you feel could be a better place for adults who are looking to implement athletics into helping young people?
Walker: This is something that some of these kids may only have-- sports. Basketball, football, baseball—it may be the only thing that may save them or get them out of that environment. What got me out was my basketball skills, and so if you take that away you really put them back out on the streets. We’re going to wind up with the wrong people, doing the wrong things because that’s all there is to do. What are the benefits of maintaining a program like the Chicago Football Classic. Although, it’s not basketball, it’s still an outlet for students and parents to identify with HBCUs. Walker: Sometimes I think if I went to an HBCU school, maybe I would’ve had that HBCU feel and culture but I wound up going to the University of Arkansas, which was a good move for me to get out of Chicago and get away from everything. The CFC is the first introduction for parents and kids to see HBCU schools do it and it’s fun. It’s different than other schools. You get the bands and you have a togetherness that’s really unbelievable that a lot of people don’t know about. How is this compared to what we’ve seen at PWIs (Predominately White Institutions)? Walker: It’s just like homecoming. I went to the University of Arkansas and I used to be there for homecoming. It is just absolutely no comparison. A homecoming at an HBCU school-- because people come back. You see people who have graduated 50, 60 years ago from Clark Atlanta University or HBCUs. They’re coming back in, cheering and being a part of all of the festivities that happen during homecoming. It’s something to see and I experienced last year. I basically called my wife and said, ‘Wow, maybe I missed out on this HBCU thing when I was in college but it’s unbelievable!’ It’s something that I don’t think any other colleges really experience.

Chicagoan Mellody Hobson’s Commitment to After School Matters
Melody Hobson By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer After School Matters-- the program that was the pride and joy of the late first lady of the city of Chicago Maggie Daley--continues to shine bright. With nearly 1,000 attendees from community leaders, corporate supporters and political heavyweights filing into the newly built Wintrust Arena, all eyes were focused recently on some of the program’s talented youth during its annual gala. After School Matters has reached more than 17,000 Chicago teenagers who participated in the organization’s programs, which has highlighted everything from photography, jewelry making, animation, audio technology, robotics, boxing to creating hip hop beats. President of Ariel Investments Mellody Hobson is the chairman of ASM and sits on several boards including The Estee Lauder Companies Inc., Starbucks Corporation and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. The wife of film mogul George Lucas, they are parents and philanthropists—donating to various organizations that are close to heart. With a contribution of $25 million in 2013, the couple sealed their unwavering commitment to Maggie Daley’s mission to provide a creative outlet for Chicago’s youth. “It’s important to me because we’ve seen that it changes the lives and it works at a huge scale. So, we were able to pro-

Those are big numbers and those teens give us some amazing feedback about how they feel safe in our programs,” Hobson said. “Also, [they tell us] how they feel encouraged in our programs and so as a result of that we say, ‘what is not to like about this?’ Besides the fact that all the data shows we have a higher graduation rate,” Hobson continued. “The program has also shown a higher percentage of teens attending college once they graduate from high school.” Growing up on the South Side, Hobson admits she was brought up in humbling beginnings with a single-mom who worked hard and hustled to provide a better way for her and her siblings. At times, when finances were tight—the resources for extra curricular activities weren’t always there for her. Her commitment as After School Matters Chairman is a constant reminder of what it feels like to be one of the 17,000

students mobilized in the program. “One thing I know is I love Chicago. I always will and always have. It’s the best city in the world and I’ve been to a lot of cities. So, what I took from Chicago first and foremost—it was a city that I wanted to be in and a city that I felt wanted me,” she explains. She said in addition was the “importance of hard work.” She knew that the American dream was possible and that “you could be or do anything”, says Hobson. ASM participants Destiny Alborn attends Lindbloom Math and Science and Ashley Dominic attends Taft High School. They both found a program that drew their interest in STEM. “Many of my friends have done After School Matters and mainly arts programs and I’m personally interested in STEM so I searched for a STEM program to benefit me. Junior Reasearch science has done just that,” says Destiny. Junior Research Science is based out of Columbia College and pairs students with professional engineers in the field. Ashley has participated in previous ASM programs and this program peaked her interest. “I wanted to look at STEM programs because I’m interested in science. I found Junior Research Science and the college setting was what I was looking for.” Both high school students are enthusiastic about their love for science and they are not discouraged from pursuing a career in a male-driven field. Smiling, Alborn says, “I think women can do anything. I say that we are as capable as the next male. We are all the same and our brain functions the same if not better.” North Lawndale College Prep High School student Miguel Bailey is mentored by Sergeant Daniel Allen of the 11th Dis-
trict. The musician and his wife started their own youth center, Divine Purpose Youth Performing Arts Center, in the Lawndale community to create a safe environment for students. Bailey says, “The program is about beat making, video editing and filming. We do short films, music videos and film documentaries.” Since 1991, more than 200,000 teens have benefited from the programs with hands-on, project-based and summer programs that have expanded over the last 28 years. With facilities throughout the city provided for students to attend at Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library locations, community-based organizations and various participating centers—ASM has made it more accessible for youth to gain access. Hobson reflects on her experience as a kid. “I’ve always felt so strongly about these programs. I remember going to ballet class for a few sessions and then just running out of money and we couldn’t go anymore. I remember the few piano lessons and then we didn’t have the money to pay for them. I remember that and here we have programs that are free and they span across 1,300 different programs.” ASM currently has 950 participating teachers who find a way to share their expertise and knowledge with students. For many, this is also another form of income and most are CPS teachers. Hobson believes this is what makes the program authentic and credible. “They are the heart and they are totally into making sure these kids are supported in every conceivable way. We’re always looking and welcoming those individuals who have unique talents and interests that they can share with our teens to help them grow with the promise and opportunity that exists.” www.chicagodefender.com
ENTERTAINMENT By Jesuorobo Enobakhare, Jr Defender Guest Columnist A photo of Colin Kaepernick tweeted out by Jennifer Lee Chan on August 26, 2016 launched a public debate. Kaepernick stated his action (sitting, which led to kneeling, during the anthem) was due to the oppression of people of color and ongoing issues with police brutality. However what was intended to draw attention to the demand for justice for people of color, quickly turned into a debate centered on patriotism, supporting the US Armed Forces, and First Amendment Rights; meanwhile the subject of his action was quickly and quietly ushered off of the main stage. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge a few of the unarmed men and women of color killed by police courtesy of Daniel Funke and Tina Susman of the LA Times http:// www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-police-deaths-20160707snap-htmlstory.html: •Alton Sterling, 37 Baton Rouge, LA - 2016 •Gregory Gunn, 58 Montgomery, AL - 2016 •Samuel DuBose, 43 Cincinnati, OH - 2015 •Brendon Glenn, 29 Los Angeles, CA - 2015 •Freddie Gray, 25 Baltimore, MD - 2015 •Natasha McKenna, 37 Fairfax County, VA - 2015 •Walter Scott, 50 Charleston, SC - 2015 •Christian Taylor, 19 Arlington, TX - 2015 •Michael Brown Jr., 18 Ferguson, MO - 2014 •Ezell Ford, 25, Los Angeles, CA - 2014 •Eric Garner, 43, Staten Island, NY - 2014 •Akai Gurley, 28, New York, NY - 2014 •Laquan McDonald, 17, Chicago, Il - 2014 •Tamir Rice, 12, Cleveland, OH – 2014
The Forgotten Issue - Police Violence Against Black Men (and Women)
Colin Kaepernick
A few of the names you may be familiar with, all of the names many are not. But most are familiar with Colin Kaepernick and by his actions he spoke for all of them. In 2017 Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers. As of yet he has not been signed by another NFL team while at the same time police violence against Black men and women has continued. Once again the conversation is not about the victims but has now shifted to the reasons for Colin Kaepernick not being signed by an NFL team, First Amendment Rights and NFL boycotts. This reminds me of a scene from The Dark Knight “You spat in the faces of Gotham’s worse criminals. Didn’t you think there would be some casualties? Things were always going to get worse before they got better.” Alfred Pennyworth to Bruce Wayne (Batman). Football is the most popular sport in America. Racism and oppression of people of color has been a part of the American way since the founding of this country. Colin Kaepernick unintentionally (or intentionally) drew a battle line against racism and oppression in front of millions of NFL fans. The battle for the soul of our country was laid bare for all to see. But instead of the issue being confronted and finally resolved, the NFL owners have decided to fight to restore the status quo by the supposedly “quieting” of one voice. Colin Kaepernick took a knee, not for you nor me, he took a knee for those voiceless known and unknown Black men and women who were the victims of police violence and it is now up to us to not only be their voices in protest, but to also work to change the system and end the bloodshed so that those lives lost will not be lives lost in vain. Get Ready For Some HBCU Football One question: CD Around Town readers, do you have your ticket to the Chicago Football Classic? Come out to the game, relax and enjoy the tailgating, football game, and the half-time “Battle of the Bands.” For all of you HBCU alumni, you know what I am talking about! I attended the Scholarship Luncheon for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Chicago Alumni Association. The luncheon was held at the Oak Lawn Hilton and supported by many of the Chicago HBCUs. The President of the Chicago Alumni Jackey Cason and Janelle Dowell, the 2017 Scholarship Luncheon Chair, presented their National Alumni Association President Timothy D. Pighee with a check for $1,000 toward the support of the reconstruction of the National Alumni office. Several HBCU Chicago Alumni Chapters were present. For those who did not attend an HBCU, I am sorry! I got “my eat on” at the Taste of Matteson in the South Suburbs. The Taste was held at the Holiday Inn in Matteson. The event featured all the local high schools’-- Rich East, Rich Central and Rich South-- Culinary Arts Programs serving specialty dishes to the guests. Restaurants from throughout the Village provided delicious samples too. Dusties, Giordanos, Jimmy John’s, Bar Louies, Angelica’s Bakery (oh my goodness, the caramel cake!), and my personal favorite Hidden Manna, Black owned and New Orleans style food, were among the many contributors. The event was well attended and there was not an empty seat in the house. The event was coordinated by the Village of Matteson, Department of Community Affairs, under the leadership of Toni Ashmore and the Village President Sheila Chalmers Currin.

GUEST COLUMN
Don’t Be Intimidated by “The Interview” By Gina B. Defender Guest Columnist For some people, the mere thought of interviewing for a new job can be crippling. I would personally love to know the statistics on how many people want a new job but decline to pursue opportunities because they’re interview-phobic. Let me let you in on a little secret . . . you are the leading authority on you. Gina B. The interviewee isn’t going to ask you any questions that you don’t know the answer to, but your success is all about how you present yourself. It might help to think of preparing for an interview as staging yourself. If you watch HGTV shows, you’ll know that houses sell WAY faster when they’re staged with beautiful furniture and accessories, selected specifically to highlight the best features of the homes. The furnishings don’t change the home, but the idea is for prospective buyers to actually imagine themselves living there and quickly sign on the dotted line. In an interview, ultimately, what you want is for the interview team to be able to envision you as a colleague. They want to look at your background and speak with you, and walk away with the mindset that you could be a great asset to the team. So, how do you lead your interviewers to this conclusion? As usual, I’m here to help. Run yourself through a few exercises before the interview: 1. Do your homework! Research the company and think of how your desired role fits in to the overall business model. Make a list of a few intelligent questions to ask about how your role will contribute to the bottom line. 2. Read through the job description and have prepared answers about how your background aligns to each of the key re-
quirements. Practice succinctly delivering situational examples about how you’ve successfully navigated difficult situations in previous roles. 3. Arrive bearing a few copies of your current resume. 4. Study the culture of the organization. This exercise will not only provide insight to some of the interviewer’s questions, but it will also help you determine whether or not the company is the right fit for you. 5. Know the answer to “why should we hire you?” (Hint: the wrong answer is “because I need a job.”) 6. Carefully consider your outfit and dress appropriately. I typically advise to err on the side of formality in an interview, which means wearing a conservative suit. The ONLY exception to this would be if the interviewer sternly instructs you to wear business casual clothing – which does NOT mean a t-shirt and jeans. For men, a button-down shirt with no tie and slacks is a good choice. I would advise women to wear a modest work dress that’s not too short or low-cut. No sandals. 7. Be mindful of your personal style. You should not have any accessories that distract from your content. If your interviewer is mesmerized by your hair, jewelry, or any visible tattoos, you’re already losing. Also, it’s probably best to curtail the use of perfume/cologne for an interview. 8. Plan your travel route to the interview location and have a good idea of how long it will take to get there. The goal is to arrive 10 minutes early. Once you’ve arrived at the interview site, there are a few key instructions to remember: 1. Be extremely nice to all receptionists and assistants. Don’t underestimate the importance of their opinions. 2. Relax and project confidence, rather than arrogance. Hiring managers want to feel like you’re extremely capable, but they also want to know that they’re adding a collaborative team member to the mix. 3. Show enthusiasm for the role, but not to the point of desperation. While you might REALLY want a job, interviewers are looking for the best fit rather than the per-
son who is looking for employment by any means necessary. 4. Be honest. The goal of an interview is getting to know you, and a good interviewer will be able to detect disingenuous answers. 5. Do not ask questions about compensation or drug testing. Typically the hiring manager will initiate the compensation conversation. You should always assume there will be substance testing and background checks. Asking will only
activate red flags. Lastly, don’t forget to gather contact information and write thank-you notes no later than 24 hours after your interview. They really do make a lasting impression. Now . . . knock ‘em dead and get that offer! Gina B. is an executive search consultant and President/Chief Alchemist of Naturals by Gina B. For more information about Gina, go to www.IAmGinaB.com.

Court Theatre opens 63rd Season with Five Guys Named Moe By Clarke Peters Directed by Ron OJ Parson, Music Director Abdul Hamid Royal And Associate Director Felicia P. Fields September 7 – October 8, 2017 By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play There was an artist who was an innovator who kept laughing to keep from crying. His flair and panache demonstrated the harmonic rhythmic and lyrical conventions of jazz and blues music so that it could evolve on either side of the color line as Rock and Roll or Rhythm and Blues. His name was Louis Jordan, the pioneer, the great bandleader, saxophonist and songwriter whose style of sensibility, wit, and avant-garde in texture captured our hearts beBrenda and Rick cause he played for “The People.” McCain The musical “Five Guys Named Moe” let the “good times roll” by paying tribute to this legendary great by introducing us to Nomax (Stephen “Blu’ Allen), a newly single, broke, young man who is drinking his blues away. What’s a young man to do when he has a bad case of the blues? Mourning the death of a relationship gone badly, there’s only one thing you can do--get drunk and sing your sorrows away while listening to the hit songs by Louis Jordan on your radio in the wee hours of the morning.
Five Guys Named Moe Is a Smash Hit However, drowning his sorrows in alcohol and jazz music came to a screeching halt for Nomax when the melodious intervention of Five Guys Named Moe emerged directly out of the radio dressed in snazzy, dapper suits. Big Moe (Lorenzo Rush), Little Moe (Darrian Ford), Eat Moe (James Earl Jones II), No Moe (Eric A. Lewis), and Four-Eyed Moe (Kelvin Roston Jr.) appeared to help Nomax get his life back on track and sing and dance his way back to love! It took 25 numbers to get Nomax back on the right path –including “Beware, Brother, Beware,” “Safe, Sane and Single” and “What’s the Use of Getting Sober” (hmmm, songs that actually, promote the character’s behaviors and commitment phobias). Nonetheless, the five velvet-smooth Moes had good intentions when they claimed they wanted to reform Nomax of his wrongful ways. In addition to their singing The Five Moes continued to amuse us with their superb choreography in a range of various exuberant performances, and their commitment to our amusement carried over when they put on fluffy yellow costumes for “Ain’t Nobody Here but Us Chickens,” and the “Push Ka Shi Pie” (the song that involved the entire audience in song and dance). The band was extraordinary and brought Louis Jor-

dan’s music back to life by celebrating and reintroducing his musical slant on Jazz during the 1930s-1950s with catchy, playful, clever and foot-tapping songs that were filled with an understanding of warm affection for people and our foibles. Director Ron OJ Parson delivered by paying tribute to Jordan by telling his story and keeping his spirit alive through his music. He engaged the audience throughout the performance to partake in singing and dancing with the phenomenal cast. For a production that was meant to be staged at a larger venue, Parson made sure that the entire audience enjoyed themselves and had fun in an intimate setting at Court Theatre. We highly recommend the musical “Five Guys Named Moe;” it was an unbeatable treat of fun and laughter that came with a high voltage of energy. The Cast Includes: Stephen “Blu’ Allen (Nomax) Darrian Ford (Little Moe) James Earl Jones II (Eat Moe) Eric A. Lewis (No Moe) Kelvin Roston Jr. (Four Eyed Moe) Lorenzo Rush, Jr. (Big Moe) www.chicagodefender.com

Bears players lock arms during National Anthem Sunday vs Pittsburgh Steelers. (John L. ALexander/ The Bigs Visuals)
Trump’s “SOB’s” Comment Pushes Bears to be “Patriotic-ish” Why Bears protest misses mark on Kaepernick’s original message By Terrence Tomlin The Bigs Media Watching the Bears lock arms Sunday—in response to Donald Trump’s offensive comments calling NFL players who have chosen to protest police brutality and injustice toward people of color in this country by kneeling during the national anthem “sons of bitches” —made me think of a new word -- patriotic-ish. Like most of the NFL, Bears players stayed silent and took a business as usual approach last September when Kaepernick first decided to take a knee. “We’re just focused on football and trying to win a game,” said Sherrick McManis after a 2016 week 12 loss to the Tennessee Titans in which the Bears fell to 2-10. Willie Young let it be known that he had more important things to worry about. “I’ve got too much going on right By Eugene McIntosh The Bigs Media Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer, Jason McLeod and company have basically sent the deck up as far as draft picks are concerned. Five of the Cubs seven 1st round draft picks, along with Addison Russell who came in a trade from Oakland in 2014, have become major pieces to the Cubs puzzle. Javier Baez ‘11, Albert Almora Jr ‘12, Kris Bryant ‘13, Kyle Schwarber ‘14, and Ian Happ ‘15 have all played a key role in the team’s quest to be the first NL pennant winner to go back-to-back since the Cincinnati Reds did it in 1975-76. The Cubs are playing their best baseball at the right time and are having fun doing it. “We’re having a lot of fun with it, that’s for sure,” said Kris Bryant, who has shown growth in his overall game the last year. He’s hitting .297 with 29 HR and 73 RBI thru 154 games. KB has 18 more walks and 31 less strikeouts than his 2016 MVP campaign. His base running is second to none, his play is steady defensively and it’s a fact that his teammates can www.chicagodefender.com
here at Halas Hall to worry about what he’s got going on.” Linebacker Danny Trevathan chimed in by saying, “ I know what my job is here, I know what my responsibilities are and I know how I feel about certain things. I’m here right now to win games and that’s really my focus.” Not only did they leave Kaepernick hanging via their comments off the field but on the field; it was no surprise that not a single Bears player decided to kneel or raise a fist in solidarity with one of their own, a fellow player in the National Football League. Fast forward a year later, Colin Kaepernick has yet to find a job in the NFL and Bears players have suddenly become “woke” and decided to take a late pass and join the fight. Only now, whether consciously or unconsciously, they are helping to push the original meaning of Kaepernick’s protest into the abyss by locking arms under the guise of “unity” and respecting the flag. “Unity, regardless of what’s going on, we have respect for our soldiers and every military thing. But we also have respect for ourselves and our teammates. Regardless of what’s being said against us, as professional athletes, we’re sticking together,” said Sherrick McManis after Sunday’s 23-17 win versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Back-to-Back... Why Not? With the Cubs revving their engines for another Championship run, Eugene takes a look at their chances of going back-to-back. count on him to come to the ballpark ready to go. Addison Russell’s return from the disabled list was the boost that the Cubs needed, especially defensively. Albert Almora Jr. should be the Cubs everyday center fielder for years to come. Sharing his spot with Jon Jay, he’s stayed around .300 for most of the season. He’s been a force
But “sticking together” wasn’t on the list of things to do when Kaepernick put his neck on the line for innocent Black men being killed in our country; no, winning a football game was more important. And I guess being called an “SOB” by the President is something we just can’t stand for. Danny Trevathan responded to the flurry of Trump tweets in which he expressed that “Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable” by saying “He don’t make me flinch. He don’t make me jump.” But the truth is, Trump made the entire NFL flinch and jump in a way that Colin Kaepernick never could. Head Coach John Fox, who was part of the Bears’ chain of arms Sunday, said “Basically we felt as a team, George (McCaskey) included that this issue is divisive and disrespectful. I think what we’re all about is being united together. No disrespect for the anthem.” United together….against Donald Trump’s calling NFL players “sons of bitches.” So Kaepernick’s words still ring true regarding his fellow NFL’ers joining his movement, “There’s a lot of consequences that come along with this. There’s a lot of people that don’t want to have this conversation. They’re scared they might lose their job. Or they might not get the endorsements. They might not be treated the same way. Those are things I’m prepared to handle.” It’s important to remember this the next time the Bears decide to go all patriotic-ish on us.
for Joe Maddon both offensively and defensively late in games. He’s a competitor and would love to play everyday, but he sees the big picture. “I’m a competitor and I wanna play, but it’s not about me. It’s about the Chicago Cubs and it’s about winning another World Series. I’m happy to be here and happy to help in whatever way I can,” he said. There’s no denying what Kyle Schwarber means to the team and one swing of his bat can put a charge into the Cubs like no one else. Depth is no issue. Happ, Zobrist, Baez, Contreras, Heyward and Bryant have all played multiple positions. The starting pitching has battled injury all year but they know what it takes and they’ve found their groove as of late. The bullpen looks to be gaining strength at the right time. The Nationals have been patiently waiting. I know the Dodgers would love a rematch. I’m not a huge fan of sequels but Cubs vs Indians Part 2, has a nice ring to it. Besides, the Cubs pulled the impossible last year ending their 108 year Championship drought, so I say in my best Kevin Garnett voice, “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!” WHY NOT?

Chicago Football Classic: Celebrating 20 Years of HBCU Tradition
T
By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer he Chicago Football Classic has become one of the highlights and anticipated HBCU alumni events of the year. Leaders in business, public service, faith, education and the community come together for a weekend of activities—highlighting HBCU colle-
giate football. For the past 20 years, Chicago businessmen Tim Rand, Everett Rand and Larry Huggins have produced the Chicago Football Classic (CFC) as the leading HBCU Classic football weekend in the North. The history of the football classic games goes as far back as 1922 between Bishop College and Southern University during the Louisiana State Fair, which is currently the Red River State Fair Classic. Unlike the traditional predominately White institutions’ football bowl games—Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) host classics during the football playing season. Businessmen and brothers Tim and Everett Rand have built a successful business—MAC One Company-- one of the leading food and beverage distributors in the Midwest. Their multi-million-dollar company has employed hundreds of people and their philanthropic efforts along with

(Photo by Mary L. Datcher) Riteway-Huggins CEO Larry Huggins has impacted many families throughout Chicagoland. The idea for CFC came when Huggins accompanied Citizen Newspaper Publisher William Garth to the Circle City Classic held every year in Indianapolis. “I would go there and just see African-American people coming together, everybody enjoying themselves and having a good time,” he remembered. “I said, ‘Wow, why can’t we do that same thing here in Chicago?’ When I came back home, I had a conversation with Tim and Everett Rand, Ernest Sawyer and Dr. Robert Donaldson. We all had the idea that maybe let’s try and have an HBCU game here in the city of Chicago.” In 1997, the first game was held in Chicago between Mississippi Valley State and Southern University. “We had no idea what we were doing at the end of the day, and it turned out to be a disaster,” said Huggins. The game drew 7,500 attendees and the group lost approximately $750,000. But, without losing a step, they were committed to hosting another game the following year—bringing together more businesses from industries where the men had built their reputations.
Still Time To Get Tickets
As the CFC gradually began to build steam, one of the vital components of moving it from an HBCU alumni weekend to engaging local youth began with the Chicago Public Schools. “By year three, we realized that it was more than just a football game. We teamed up with CPS schools and it was about getting the young kids to come to the game and to see the pageantry of these HBCU teams and marching bands,” said Huggins. Over the years, the Rand Brothers and Huggins had community and political alliances as long-time Chicagoans—the men realized they had created a special bridge which had traditionally been reserved for Southern-based organizations. “At the time, Mayor Richard Daley really embraced the game. One of the things that he said is that he wanted us “to encourage more” of our students to look at HBCUs,” he said. “Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has been a big supporter of the game and Mayor Rahm Emanuel has continued working with us and the city.” continued on page 2

Huggins says without the resources from the city “it would be hard for us to do it.” The CFC has called Soldier Field home exclusively for all of its games since its inception. With the support of the city and the Chicago Park District—the production of the classic is a major undertaking. The approximate cost to produce and host the event runs in the ballpark of $1.5 million. A portion of the budget is allocated towards stu dent scholarships provided by the support from corporate sponsors. “When we first did this game in 1997, we really didn’t have corporate sponsors, we had people in construction and people in the food and beverage industry who supported our efforts. By the second year, ComEd came on board,” says Huggins. Event Director for the CFC Donna Hodge recollects a special moment between co-founder Everett Rand and a student attending the college fair. Having driven from Ohio to Chicago to specifically meet recruiters from the college she was determined to attend, she didn’t make it in time. “This was right before the game started and it was in between the college fair and the game. Everett stopped what he was doing and made sure the young lady was taken care of and met the people she wanted to see,” she recalled. “[He did this] amidst all of the things that are going on game day. Even though she missed the college fair, he recognized how important it was and he really wanted to make sure that she got what she needed.” Hodge says the moment revealed a true testimony of what the CFC is really about—presenting a platform for students who are unable to have immediate access to important college bound resources. Huggins says, “When you look at when our kids go to the schools, they usually stay and that has been one of the biggest challenges that we have; it is a culture that is in the South. You can travel 200 miles from each city and you can be either in Atlanta, in Mississippi, in Tennessee, or you can come up to Circle City Classic.” Huggins says with “HBCUs it’s just a tradition for them.” With Black students in the South—most have matriculated to historical Black colleges— “it is a culture”. Everett Rand agrees. “There’s a nurturing concept with the HBCUs, you’re not just a number on campus. You’re a part of the family and the important thing is the inspiration that after graduation, people speak so highly of their experience there. The friends that they’ve met, the conversations, and their teachers have been there,” he says. “Everyone has a tendency to stick together. I’m very happy that this spirit is coming to Chicago.” Grambling State University Athletic Director Paul Bryant believes in the Chicago Football Classic brand as well. Traveling from Louisiana, the team has cultivated a brand over the last five decades thanks to the legendary football coach Eddie Robinson. Winning the HBCU National Football Championship, Bryant is excited for his players and the band to be a part of this year’s festivities in Chicago. “For our young men, this will be like a ‘bowl-like’ experience. It helps our finances as well, but for us, we’re looking at more than just a game. We’re looking at exposing our brand, which will bring people here. The GSU brand is international and people want to see Grambling. It has become the legacy and it’s strong,” said Bryant. In addition to Grambling’s precision tight marching band, they have been the only HBCU band that has played at two presidential inaugural ceremonies. He says the CFC is produced very well—and it wouldn’t be around for 20 years if it weren’t. The big weekend will kick-off on Thursday with the President’s reception, which will honor former U.S. Secretary of Education and former CPS President Arnie Duncan along with businesswoman and community leader Josephine Wade. An avid admirer of both award recipients, Huggins said, “Arnie helped us in our infancy stage and CPS really played a major role in making sure that those kids went to the game. He was instrumental in helping us with the college fair,” he said. “Believe it or not, that’s what made corporate Chicago really truly embrace it. You have to honor

Her tirelessly efforts in helping many organizations and those in need has earned her numerous accolades and recently an honorary Chicago street sign on the busy business strip. “You can’t say enough about Mother Wade,” comments Huggins. “Hey, listen that lady is just a person who truly loves people. Number one, she loves kids and she is always doing things to help people. She was instrumental in helping us bring the media to this game to promote it. There’s more word out now about the Chicago Football Classic because of Mother Wade.” From the battle of the bands on Daley Plaza to the highly attended college fair drawing hundreds of students and parents to Soldier Field Saturday morning—the weekend will be filled with non-stop activities. One of the hidden highlights of the CFC is the art of “suite hopping.” Whether you’re a host of the cushy Soldier Field suites or an invitee for Saturday afternoon—it has become one of the hottest passes during the Classic’s weekend. The bi-level row of private suites during a Chicago Bears game will cost about $30,000. To secure a suite during the CFC, it is reduced to a rate of $3,000. “We try to make this game affordable for everybody. So, when you get an opportunity to sit up in the corporate suites, you will see any and anybody who’s doing some-

thing in this town whether you’re a business person or whether you are an elected official or whether you’re an athlete,” Huggins explains. “It is truly an honor and a privilege when you have a suite or when you get invited. It has become one of the largest networking sessions that you can experience as well as a good time.” Huggins admits it is a labor of love to keep the momentum of producing such a high-profile event. As they celebrate 20 years of CFC—they have invested nearly $30 million in producing the collegiate event. “I would say for three businessmen to make that commitment, it’s something that we are very proud about because there’s only two events that our community can say we host annually—the Chicago Football Classic and Bud Billiken Day parade. But what’s important about this is that when these colleges come to Chicago, they make Chicago their number one recruiting city for their schools,” he said. In a city where millions of Black families migrated from the South, the rich traditions of its historically Black colleges, Greek organizations and strong academic achievements—the next generation’s enthusiasm for CFC is hopeful. “They understand the importance of higher education and they’ve seen the things that I have done over the years. It’s important to me they see how things are and the impact of what this game means on the city of Chicago. I can say the same thing for Tim and Everett. Their kids also have seen what they have done and it is about a legacy--when your kids see the enthusiasm that you have as an individual and the things that you love to do.” www.chicagodefender.com
