Civil Case Against Board of Education for Former Simeon HS Track Coach Begins Jury selection began Friday for civil damages against The Board of Education for the City of Chicago in a case brought by the student who was sexually assaulted on 40 separate occasions by a volunteer track coach at Simeon High School back in 2014. The case, brought by the plaintiff under the pseudonym Jane Doe to protect her privacy, was scheduled to begin with opening arguments Monday, October 2, 2017, before the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Budzinski in room 2110 of the Richard J. Daley Center in Chicago. The plaintiff is represented by James D. Montgomery, Jr. and Melissa P. Casey. The Board of Education is represented by in-house counsel, Mara Warman and the law firm of Borkin & Scahill, LLC. Gerald Gaddy was convicted of multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor, on September 6, 2016, and is currently serving a 40-year sentence. Jane Doe alleges that the Board of Education for the City of Chicago was willful and wanton in its hiring, retention, and supervision of Gaddy. The Board denies those allegations as well as the nature and extent of Jane’s damages.

Musician Joyce Renee Walker Honored By AARP Volunteer and Musician Joyce Renee Walker was recently named as one of AARP Illinois’ 50@50+. AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, in conjunction with Crain’s Custom Media announced the honorees who are all age 50 or older. “Individuals ages 50 and older make tremendous contributions to their communities. But these trailblazers’ efforts often go unnoticed and unrecognized,” said AARP Illinois State President Rosanna Marquez. “That is why AARP Illinois and Crain have launched 50@50+ Illinois — to honor those great Illinois disruptors who think outside the Joyce Walker box, and go the extra mile to help make life better for all.” The 50 @50+ Illinois recipients are role models for current and future generations. As tireless leaders, they embrace growth, create new opportunities, and are always present for their neighbors and their communities. Dedicated individuals across Illinois work each day to improve the lives of others, create stronger communities, and disrupt the idea of aging. 50@50+ Illinois honorees were nominated by their peers, and selected by AARP Illinois for their work in the following five categories: Nonprofit, Arts & Culture, Business, Community Building, and Disruption. Walker was nominated in the Arts & Culture category. The musician is also a professional motivator and college recruiter. She has hosted one of the longest running public access television talk shows, entitled “Issues and Artists” on CAN-TV in Chicago. West Point Baptist Church Celebrates 100 Years On Sunday, October 8th, the West Point Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special service. Additionally, the church will host a gala on Friday, November 8th, which will be at the Chateau Bu-Sche, and will also celebrate the church’s anniversary. The church was first established in 1917 by a “fervent assembly” of African-Americans who had migrated up to Chicago from the South, and to honor the Mississippi town that a large amount of the organizers had migrated from, they named the church “West Point.” Since then, the church has exponentially expanded the size of its congregation, renovated the building and paid off the mortgage, constructed and reconstructed homes in the neighborhood, established a bunch of new ministries (everything from a food pantry, to a domestic violence advocacy ministry), and helped lead the congregation to be active in working for social justice. Now, the church is being led by Senior Pastor Bernard L. Jakes, who’s been the pastor of West Point for 15 years. As he started, he was immediately thrown into the middle of a massive church split caused by his predecessor, and under his leadership and guidance, a divided congregation was reconciled. The theme for West Point’s special Sunday service is, “Journeying Toward a Century of God’s Grace and Faithfulness to God’s Church and Community: Isaiah 63:7.” The service will take place at 10 a.m. at the church and is free and open to the public. The church is located at 3566 S. Cottage Grove. The November 8 gala costs $60 per person, with tables seating 10. Chateau Bu-Sche is located at 11535 S. Cicero Avenue in Alsip.

Donda’s House To Rebuild Kanye West’s Childhood Home Donda’s House purchased Dr. Donda West’s original house in the South Shore Community on the South Side of Chicago to convert it into a community arts hub last fall. Now, as they continue to work on funding for the new space, the organization says its top priority is its programming. Since the purchase, the foundation has met with an architect, the alderman and others to move forward with developing the South Shore Home into a sustainable and supported center for arts and community programming. Several fundraising initiatives are being planned for the spring. In a newsletter, the group released the following statement: “Although we have acquired the property, our primary goal is our mission of providing access to the arts. When it comes to our funding priorities, our programs take precedence and we have continued our free art classes, auditions and Alumni Support. We have also constructed our capital campaign and timeline for the new space which includes adding additional board members, meeting with Foundations, and individual donors.” Executive Director Donnie Smith and Creative Director Che “Rhymefest” Smith recently traveled to West Africa to create “freedom songs.” Those interested in supporting the development of the project or learning more can contact the group at: hello@dondashouseinc. org. www.chicagodefender.com
COVER STORY
Lifetime’s New Hit Reality Show “Livin’ Large”— You’ve Never Seen Anything Like This By Kenneth Robinson Defender Contributing Writer Lifetime’s new reality series “Livin’ Large” aired Friday, Sept. 22nd at 8 p.m. CST and I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with the entire cast – all natives of Chicago, to learn about the concept of the show, how this process has impacted their lives and the message they want to deliver to the world. If you have the opportunity to see the six-episode marathon, I believe you’ll agree that it’s nothing like you’ve seen on television before. Based on the name of the show alone, “Livin’ Large,” one might imagine someone living a very highfalutin lifestyle behind gated communities, struggling with which high-end charity event to attend or deciding what lavish vacation they’ll take – but the show’s quite the contrary actually. “Livin’ Large” is about family love, and unconditional love for yourself and others. The show follows your average family going through things like everyone else and experiencing life obstacles while in pursuit of their dreams. There’s one caveat to all of this – they are plus-size individuals. In a world designed for thinner people, the family—the Stepneys-- face so many obstacles; however, they are not letting their size hold them back. In fact, they are even more determined to make their dreams a reality because they’ve been stereotyped for so long. The Stepneys lean on one another for support and exemplify a strong family bond. The family consists of Anicya – the inspiring singer with a larger-than-life personality; Adam – Anicya’s twin and music producer; Anthony – a pastor and the oldest of all the siblings; Crystal – Anthony’s wife, who you’ll come to see is not your typical First Lady; Danisha – Adam’s girlfriend who’s struggling with gaining the family’s acceptance; and of course, there’s the matriarch of the family, Cherrie Stepney, who keeps everyone and everything in balance. Anicya makes it very clear that “Livin’ Large” is not another weight loss show. “We are not pushing the plate away! I love chicken way too much so you’ll see all of us eating,”says Anicya. “You’ll see us doing what everyone else does – dating, preaching at church, producing music, performing on stage and even ziplining.” On the show, you see the Stepney family living their lives with little to no concern about what the world thinks of them or their size. “We have dreams we’re trying to accomplish,” says Adam. “My mom always encouraged us to be ourselves and to be leaders. I can’t let the world dictate how successful I’ll become.” The Stepney family hopes their new show aids in transforming the way the world sees plus-size people. “They see us as disgusting and call us obese, which is a terrible word to call anyone,” says Crystal. “We hope the world sees how happy we are in our skin and how much we’re just like them.” “Livin’ Large” is a really positive show and it is all about “acceptance.” Everyone wants to feel loved and accepted, and the Stepney’s are no different. After the first epwww.chicagodefender.com
The Stepneys isode, you’ll immediately notice how loving this family is and they’ll have you hooked. They are confident, hilarious, intelligent and happy – ingredients for a joyful life. Life is too short to focus on weight loss when you have so much to accomplish. Living life in the fast lane, even when the fast lane can’t quite fully support them, is what the Stepneys are all about. Despite their size, they have adopted this motto. “We are living our lives and having fun while doing it,” says Anthony. Of course, with extra weight comes health concerns, but each member of the Stepney family says they have a clean bill of health. “The world has so many thin people living a very unhealthy life yet they aren’t stigmatized like we are,” says Adam. “I have friends who I can outrun and they’re a fraction of my size, but I’m seen unfavorably by the public because of my size. Don’t assume I’m unhealthy because I weigh more, that’s not always the case.” The producers of “Livin’ Large” are clearly targeting “outsiders,” anyone who doesn’t feel as if they belong. Whatever that belonging is, producers wanted outsiders to feel comfortable in their skin, embrace who they are and learn to accept others for who they are. “We hope our show opens up discussions amongst family members
about acceptance and self-love,” says Cherrie. “I taught my children to love GOD, each other and their fellow man. I always encouraged them to look beyond the exterior and see what lies inside a human being. The world is full of people who judge you based on what you wear or how large your house is, I wanted them to love people for who they are.” Growing up we’ve all heard the old adage “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” I believe in their own way, “Livin’ Large” has reminded us of that. In a scene, a thin producer asks Anicya if a woman of her size can be seen as beautiful and with no hesitation, Anicya’s response was not only hilarious but very befitting – “can a woman of your size see herself as beautiful?” This is definitely a confident family. “You can’t just tell me I’m supposed to see myself a certain way and I believe it,” says Danisha. “I view myself as a very attractive woman and so does my husband (Adam). I hope the world can see through our show that it’s important to be yourself regardless of your shape or size. And I love that Lifetime decided to do a show like ours because you don’t see people who look like us on television often.”
Is Chicago Becoming Mini-Hollywood? Although not filmed in Chicago, there have been some amazing television shows that were “set” in Chicago. Those include the likes of: Family Matters; The League; Prison Break, The Good Wife, Hill Street Blues and ER. However, over the last few years, Chicago has become a “mini-Hollywood,” serving as home to the filming of several television shows. The amount of television filming in Chicago more than doubled from 2015 to 2016. Some indie films, as well as big budget films, have found a home in Chicago for filming. The following TV shows were filmed in Chicago in 2016…and those still in production have continued for the 2017/2018 season: Amazing Race (Filmed for One Season) APB Chicago Fire Chicago Justice Chicago Med Chicago PD Easy Empire The Exorcist Married at First Sight (Filmed for One Season)
Patriot Sense8 (Season 2 of the Netflix series) Shameless Shrink The Steve Harvey Show (moved to L.A.) And a host of films have Chicago as a character, using our fair city as the backdrop for their movie, including: “Inversion:” Samuel L. Jackson is set to star in the sci-fi disaster movie by director Peter Segal (“50 First Dates”). “Landline:” Tom Arnold stars in the indie comedy about abandoning technology. Cubs great Ryne Sandberg is featured and the film is expected to be released in 2017. “Mercury in Retrograde:” The relationship indie by Michael Glover Smith about Chicago couples vacationing in Michigan is expected to screen in 2017. The movie filmed in Chicago in August. “Signature Move:” The indie by Chicago filmmaker Jennifer Reeder is about a Pakistani Muslim lesbian living in Chicago and caring for her TV-obsessed mother. The movie filmed in the city over the summer with an expected 2017 release. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • October 4 - 10, 2017 03

LOCAL By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer On Thursday, Governor Bruce Rauner made the following statement concerning his decision to sign House Bill 40: “I understand abortion is a very emotional issue with passionate opinions on both sides. I sincerely respect those who believe abortion is morally wrong. They are good people motivated by principle. “But, as I have always said, I believe a woman should have the right to make that choice herself and I do not believe that choice should be determined by income. I do not think it’s fair to deny poor women the choice that wealthy women have. That is why I am signing HB40,” said Rauner. This is a major milestone for Pro Choice advocates who support women’s access to proper medical resources in their reproductive rights. “Thank you Governor Rauner for signing HB 40,” said Planned Parenthood of Illinois President and CEO, Jennifer Welch. “With access to abortion under attack at the federal level, it is essential to make
Gov. Rauner Signs HB40 Bill: Protects Illinois Women’s Reproductive Rights sure that women will have access to safe and legal abortion in Illinois.” In the fight against stricter federal regulations, Welch emphasize. “The language in the Illinois Abortion law of 1975, which stated that Illinois would revert back to criminalizing abortion if the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the decision in Roe v. Wade. The authority to outlaw or severely restrict abortion would return to the states, if the court were to overturn Roe.” In Gov. Rauner’s official statement, the Republican leader says, “I have spent the past couple of months talking to people on both sides of this issue. I have also spent a lot of time meeting with women across Illinois and listening to their personal stories, particularly low-income women who
Mayor Emanuel Announces COPA Leadership Plan Interim Chief Administer announced, community advisory panel to select next permanent leader Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced the succession plans for the newly-launched Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). The new interim Chief Administrator will be retired Judge Patricia Banks, former presiding judge of the Elder Law & Miscellaneous Remedies Division. In addition, the Mayor has announced the creation of a Chief Administrator Selection Advisory Panel to search and select a permanent replacement and today named the two co-chairs. “As Chief Administrator, Sharon Fairly led efforts to create a new police accountability agency that was a meaningful mile-marker on the road to police reform, accountability and transparency,” said Mayor Emanuel. “With the support of a robust interdisciplinary advisory committee, COPA’s next leader will be selected for the tough job of putting these plans into practice. In the interim, I am grateful to Judge Patricia Banks for taking these reigns and supporting the city as it continues down the road to reform. With decades of legal experience in labor and employment litigation, and more than 20 years as a judge, she brings critical and practical experience to the City as we implement the latest police reform measures.” Judge Banks began her career as a labor attorney with the United States Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor following her graduation from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Later, she www.chicagodefender.com
worked for a civil rights organization that litigated housing discrimination cases in the Federal District Court and the Corporate Law Department of Sears, Roebuck and Company handling labor and advertising matters. Following, she opened her own law office where she practiced civil law for 14 years. Judge Banks was elected judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1994, where she was assigned to the Domestic Relations Division and later to the Law Division presiding over complex litigation matters. She is the retired presiding judge of the Elder Law & Miscellaneous Remedies Division. The Chief Administrator Selection Advisory Panel will support the Mayor in selecting a new permanent Chief Administrator of COPA, which will then be approved by City Council. The co-chairs of COPA Chief Administrator Selection Advisory Panel will be Paula Wolff, Director of the Illinois Justice Project, and Alderman Ariel Reboyras, Chairman of the City Council Committee on Public Safety. Members of the Chief Administrator Selection Advisory Panel ill be finalized in the coming weeks. In October of last year, the City Council enacted Mayor Emanuel’s ordinance establishing both the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and the Public Safety Inspector General. During the launch event last month, Mayor Emanuel joined city officials, community members and public safety reform advocates to announce the opening of COPA as part of the next step in Chicago’s public safety reform efforts. Throughout the past year, COPA has built a new infrastructure for the agency’s operations to provide quality and timely police misconduct investigations. All investigators and attorneys have completed COPA Academy, a sixweek civilian oversight training program.
do not have the same luxuries that many of us have. Their stories and their struggles are real and they have touched me in a very personal way. They deserve to have a choice as much as anyone else. Both Democratic Gubernatorial candidates JB Pritzker and Chris Kennedy chimed in on HB 40. Pritzker released a statement on the recent HB 40 bill signing. “Let’s be clear: Bruce Rauner threatened to veto HB 40 and only got around to doing the right thing after an organized advertising and grassroots campaign. Today’s announcement does not change the fact that Bruce Rauner’s only sense of morality is whatever panders best to voters.” Kennedy: “Finally, after decades of living in doubt about whether Roe v. Wade would be the law of the state of Illinois, women have the certainty they deserve - the certainty that they will have reproductive freedom if Roe were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Reproductive freedom is a fundamental right and it leads to economic free-
dom for women across Illinois. This is only possible because of the power of people from throughout the state who came together to stand up to Bruce Rauner and fight for the rights of women.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel: “I want to thank Governor Rauner for standing up for choice, reproductive rights and equitable access to health care for all. Women’s access to quality, affordable health care should always remain above partisan politics. The Governor’s decision to sign HB40 into law was a significant step forward for women’s health.” State Senator Toi Hutchinson (D – Chicago Heights): “On May 10, when House Bill 40 was debated in the Illinois Senate, I said that there is nothing more intrinsic to freedom than bodily autonomy. Our ability to make our own decisions with advisors whom we chose to make the best decisions for ourselves and our families must be fiercely protected regardless of income. “Today, Governor Rauner agreed with me and thousands of women and men who stood up and used the most powerful tool we have: our voices. Thanks to those voices, House Bill 40 will become law in Illinois. We did it!” Others feel disappointed by this latest move by the governor. The Catholic church has been an avid opponent of abortion rights and Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich shared his dismay with Rauner over the signed bill.

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer
ussell Simmons is a name as famous as the household brand he created nearly 40 years ago. As the co-founder of Def Jam Records, and former CEO of the iconic record company—Simmons has become the quintessential businessman spanning across cultural boundaries and sealing hip hop into a billion-dollar industry. Creating a record label with then-partner and Grammy award winning producer Rick Rubin—the two are responsible for the music careers of LL Cool J., The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy as well building a foundation to cultivate some of today’s leading label music executives. From the creation of Rush Communications to expanding into cable content with HBO’s Def Comedy Jam and Def Poetry, and the first label executive to build a successful fashion empire with Phat Farm—Simmons has proved there is no limitations to his vision. In 2013, he co-founded UniRush—creating the RushCard, a prepaid debit card provider to low-income customers. Stepping away from the record label side 1999, Simmons has become actively involved over the last two decades with more philanthropic and community related projects including his partnerships with organizations such as The Peacekeepers and other nonprofits. “We’ve been involved with The Peacekeepers for years now in New York—my neighborhood that I grew up in— also other organizations that are doing this type of work. This particular program, we decided to spearhead ourselves with some of the community members. Those local organizations that are on the ground and are key and they have been overlooked and they are not part of city funding. The unions don’t want to take the money and give it to them,” he said. Over the years, Simmons has worked with the group’s founder, Dr. Dennis Muhammad, hiring them as his security detail for special events. The men believed in much of the same viewpoints in building back their communities. “I like to hire them so that other people feel safe hiring them. If you’re on a subway at 3 a.m. in the morning and someone is coming on the platform—you hope that it’s a nun or a bowtie. I like their love for the community and what they’ve done,” Simmons explains. “They have genuine concern and love for the community.” Recently, RushCard launched a national program Keep the Peace initiative, which provides comprehensive community peacekeeping and empowerment to various programs on the South Side of Chicago. The company has donated $50,000 to bring a holistic approach to reduce violence. Having grown up in Queens, NY, Simmons is no stranger to understanding the obstacles of becoming a statistic if necessary resources aren’t available. He has witnessed a similar pattern around the country in predominately Black communities. He believes the problem is clear and concise. “The lack of jobs, opportunity and good education. A lot has been done to the Black community over the decades and over the centuries, which has not been healed. The relationship between the infrastructure of this country and communities of color is not helping especially African Americans--where it hurts so much. It’s not helping to change the quality of life,” he says. What has been done to our psyche has not been fixed. There’s a lot of work that has to be done and community work is the best way.” As a purveyor of First Amendment rights and the creative expression of Urban culture, Simmons takes into account the influence of music, how it influences reaction both good and bad. He digresses a little. “Listen to the rap music—it’s reflection of some of the ignorance and some of the beauty in other cases. Nothing has really advanced in the Black communities--these drug laws for instance that have helped to destroy the fabric of the Black community,” says Simmons. “I’m just trying do what I can to try to add something positive back into the struggle. People were arrested for being diseased, educated in criminal behavior and dumped back into the hood. It happens in such a dramatic way around this country. Actually, Jeff Sessions 06 October 4 - 10, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER
Russell Simmons: Giving Back and Building Peace has just rolled back the work it has taken me 20 years to do on the drug laws.” Through RushCard’s national campaign, the key for Simmons is to incorporate a combination of resources from meditation to introducing Chicago area schools to financial literacy and more importantly, bringing a holistic teaching of yoga to young people early in their development. “Yes, kids need to know they have every opportunity to grow. They’re not being told that properly. Through challenge and through stillness, people can see, innovate and live a better life. The creation of a better life is from the imagination.” Simmons says, “imagination is God itself” and shares sometimes society can also cultivate discouragement. He adds, “You’re sitting in a prime position, although they tell you it’s terrible. You have an opportunity to grow—to become a great leader and there’s so many examples of what you can become but our education system and the poisons they’ve put in our communities have stopped us
from seeing our truth.” Having worked with local leaders such as Father Michael Pfleger and the city of Chicago’s first lady, Amy Rule—he has convinced Mayor Rahm Emanuel why meditation is needed in the schools. “At first, Rahm Emanuel wasn’t excited but we got his wife involved and she got him involved. Now we have meditation in the schools where the most violence has occurred and I know it will be very successful as it has been around the country and around the world.” As one of the first people to utilize the strength of hip hop culture and influence into politics, Simmons has become an admirer of Chicago artist Chance the Rapper and recently had a meeting with his younger brother and recording artist Taylor Bennett. “I think we’re in a space where a lot of artists will contribute going forward in a political dialogue. That platform should be a voice for resistance and it’s a voice for hip hop.” www.chicagodefender.com

Kidz Express and Boys & Girls Club of Chicago Join to Become Kidz Express Boys & Girls Club By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Kidz Express (KE) and Boys & Girls Club of Chicago (BGCC) have officially partnered to continue to provide youth from the Austin neighborhood with a positive, safe environment for youth development at the newly named Kidz Express Boys & Girls Club located at 5221 S. Congress Pkwy. Through this partnership, Kidz Express Boys & Girls Club will continue to serve youth ages 6 to 18 like KE has been doing for more than 20 years but with the addition of BGCC staple of programs, resources, and more. The partnership between the two youth service organizations was more than a year in the making, according to Mimi LeClair, president and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Chicago. LeClair said a representative from Kidz Express made the initial contact with the Boys & Girls Club at the national level, which eventually trickled down to her chapter. She said the BGCC was “delighted” for the opportunity to partner with KE. She said given how closely the two organization’s missions mirrored each other, the partnership was “meant to be.” She said BGCC has made a commitment to expand to communities affected by violence and deemed to be high risk like Austin and Englewood. Prior to agreeing to the partnership, community outreach efforts were made, according to LeClair. She said BGCC met with Alderman Chris Taliaferro (29th Ward) among other local school administrators, parents whose children attend Kidz Express, parents of other Boys and Girls Clubs, Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (Dist. – 1), local faith based leaders, and representatives from the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department. She said one of their shared goals is to continue looking toward the neighborhood for volunteers and employees. “We really did our homework to make sure this was the right thing,” said LeClair. “We feel very strongly that our clubs represent the communities that they serve, and in order to best represent the communities they serve, they have to be filled with individuals both children and adults from the particular community that shows its own special culture. Every community has its own special culture and we like that and support that. We think that’s ultimately very important to the culture.” LeClair said at full capacity, 250 young people could be accommodated at the current space. She acknowledged and applauded KE’s success with their current operating budget. Doug Low, executive director and board member of Kidz Express, shared his pride over what his organization has been able to accomplish. However, he said funding limitations prompted questions as to whether to remain constant in their current capacity or to look for additional streams of income with the possibility of increasing the company’s infrastructure. “I’m still the only full-time employee who

Low said 100 percent of the youth he’s hired to work at KE live within the community. He said due to the 90 percent unemployment rate in the neighborhood for teenagers, he hires the number of youth in high school and college for part time work. “What it comes down to for us is we are a highly successful grassroots program that has really provided support and services to the south Austin community,” said Low. “We have been averaging about 50-60 kids a day.” Optimizing the growth, managing expectations, and continuing consistent growth are the priorities moving forward, said Low. Alderman Taliaferro called the partnership a “tremendous asset” to the community. He said since he’s been in office he’s been a supporter of Kidz Express and looks to continue that partnership. “It was immediate to me that we needed to expand on something like this because there was a tremendous waitlist to become a part of their program,” said Taliaferro. The partnership has been facilitated, in part, by a multi-year commitment by members of the Christopher Family and the Christopher Family Foundation. Julie Christopher, a board member at the Christopher Family Foundation, stated, “The Christopher Family is proud to partner with BGCC to help support the Kidz Express Boys & Girls Club. Our hope is that a safe and nurturing Club environment allows Austin’s young people to thrive by offering them new and expanded opportunities for academic, leadership, and personal development.” To learn more about Kidz Express visit kidzexpress.org/index.php. LeToy Hannah’s successful battle against ovarian cancer has inspired her to help others fight against the silent killer through her own foundation, 7/11 Discovery To Recovery. Hannah’s road to survival came unexpectedly. She recalled prior to her cancer diagnosis several years ago on July 11 she had unknowingly battled ovarian cancer symptoms, which over time, became so severe that she could no longer bear it. She said she shared her condition with her doctor and together the two assumed (based on her family’s history of fibroid cysts) that a cyst was the culprit. She said in an ultrasound discovery it appeared that a cyst was on one of her ovaries, which prompted her to get an outpatient surgery. However, Hannah said during the procedure doctors discovered what was originally believed to be a cyst was, in fact, a tumor. She had Stage 3C ovarian cancer. She said at that time the cyst had spread throughout her organs, which is consistent LeToy Hannah (left) posed with the American Cancer Society’s defini- with her daughter, Jamie Wiltion of Stage 3C cancer. She learned when liams, at her “Teal For Toy” she woke up following the procedure that Ovarian Cancer Awareness her mother, Stephanie Hannah, made the Social in Country Club Hills, sudden decision to authorize a full hyster- Ill. ectomy to remove the visible cancer. Hannah recalled thinking about her life and what was to come next after she was told about her cancer. “I started questioning, why, how, all kinds of things so I did experience a lot of emotions at that time,” said Hannah. “Honestly, just hearing cancer, my kids are currently 12 and 15 but four years ago they were 8 and 11, so it was a week prior to my son’s birthday.” Hannah said she attacked her recovery on multiple levels through prayer, chemotherapy, and through holistic means. She said she went through six rounds of chemotherapy, which was a total of 12 doses. “I became very involved in my church family, praying daily, and believing in a higher power,” said Hannah. “Just hearing cancer four years ago, just the people that I knew personally who had cancer were no longer here and so that’s the first thing I thought.” African American women are unfortunately disproportionately susceptible to higher mortality rates in gynecologic cancer cases, according to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer. The Foundation cites a report from the Black Women’s Health Imperative that African American women have a lower five year survival rate than other races. In 2017, the American Cancer Society estimated that 22,440 women will be newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 14,080 will die from ovarian cancer. One in 75 women has a chance of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Fortunately, since that time Hannah launched 7/11 Discovery To Recovery Foundation with the goals of hosting events to educate women about the signs and symptoms, help women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer with their medical bills, increase the dialogue surrounding ovarian cancer, and more. She said the name of the organization stems from when she first learned of her cancer diagnosis. She said that she wants to make the color teal in the month of September as widespread as the color pink is for breast cancer in the month of October. She said she has previously worked with the Cancer Support Center in Homewood, Ill. Recently, Hannah hosted her first “Teal For Toy” Ovarian Cancer Awareness Social in Country Club Hills, Ill. All of the proceeds collected from the event will go towards 7/11 Discovery to Recovery Foundation. She said she is currently helping one woman with her medical expenses for the next three months as she battles her various ailments. “I had two ladies I shared my story with who were able to catch their disease in the early stages,” said Hannah. “They did not have to go through as much because my sharing of my story allowed them to identify the same symptoms.” To get in contact with LeToy Hannah, email her at teal4toy@yahoo.com. www.chicagodefender.com
IN THE MIXX
In the MIXX: Tragedy in Las Vegas, Black Chicago Shines, and Fashion Dominates By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer In the face of tragedy, suffering and adversity, it is utterly disturbing that we have a leader who continues to ignite the fuel of division and racism. In the last few weeks, Americans have dealt with incredible forces of nature beyond our control in the wake of three major Hurricanes—Harvey, Irma and Maria. In the latest catastrophic disaster to the Caribbean islands, which dissipated Barbados, St. Marten to Puerto Rico, the bureaucratic red tape has been “frustrating” to say the least. Chicago has the second-largest Mary L. Datcher Puerto Rican population to New York City on the U.S. mainland. Its residents are U.S. citizens and they are not “randoms” with their hands held out for assistance—they are part of our country. The growing desperation from family members to get the necessary aid to loved ones on the island is “life or death” at this point. The country was instantly stunned by a tragedy that took the lives of 59 people and injured 527 concert goers attending the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival on Sunday night. Will this latest event be a wake-up call for NRA lobbyists and supporters to put in stricter federal regulations for gun control? Trump added Las Vegas to his travel itinerary on Wednesday after assessing the damage to Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Rev. Jesse Jackson and State Rep. Luis Arroyo along with the help of local organizations—have secured a way to transport items via 12 semi-truck and a commercial airline to the distraught island. After an emotional opening dialogue on Monday, late night show ABC host Jimmy Kimmel did not mince his words about the lives lost. The NRA has politicians’ “balls in a money clip” said Jimmy Kimmel. Fifty-Six Republican U.S Senators did not vote for gun control, and he says it is time for Americans to make their voice known to local politicians. Rauner’s Latest Moves On the home front, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signing of HB40 last week was a move that was unprecedented by a Republican governor. The Illinois House Bill will allow women protection against potential federal restrictions on reproductive rights such as access to abortion and other related medical assistance. Advocates of Pro Choice are commending Rauner for this latest stand against anti-abortionists who feel the Illinois governor broke his promise to conservative voters and groups. Hmmm…is he the man you love to hate or hate to love? Down South Tradition in the Windy City? The Chicago Football Classic weekend was a major success bringing out HBCU schools Grambling State University (GSU) and Clark Atlanta University (CAU). Co-founders Tim Rand, Everett Rand and Larry Huggins hosted the school’s football teams, marching bands, and alumni organizations along with one of the largest college fairs prior to the game. was a blast. Shout out to the team’s VP of Communications Julian Green (Alabama A&M) for overseeing the special day, which brought out HBCU alums, live music by our DJs Vince Adams (FAMU) and Mark Fuller (JSU); post-game entertainment by indie artist J Kwest and the battle of the bands. Thank you, Julian, for another cool collectible t-shirt too! At Friday night’s President’s reception at the South Shore Cultural Center, long-time restaurant owner and community matriarch Josephine Wade was honored by CFC. She was escorted to the stage by former Mayor Emanuel aid and Chance the Rapper’s dad, Ken Bennett. I had the pleasure of sitting at media partner’s NBC-5 Chicago’s table where I met the station’s new VP of Special Projects and Community Relations, Emma Asante. Look out for some wonderful, future community initiatives from Ms. Asante! This year’s CFC game was the largest attended game in a long time with an estimated 40,000 attendees. In addition to Classic Football tradition, Soldier Field’s South Lot was jammed packed with tailgating and the smell of BBQ smoke blazing the sky. It was truly a beautiful sight to witness—collegiate and Greek pride with the Chicago skyline as our backdrop. A “Chance” To Suite Hop Anyone? Chance the Rapper hung out as a guest of the CFC in the President’s suite. The four-time Grammy winner shared his interest in attending Clark Atlanta University on twitter and was graciously introduced to CAU President Dr. Ronald A. Johnson. The two men had a good conversation, and it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a trip to the school’s campus in the near future. Celebrity DJ and Love & Hip Hop (New York) cast member DJ Self stopped by the Chicago Defender suites for a quick bite and insightful interview. Big ups to the managers Brian and Lauren for producing another successful hot SOCIETY party at the House of Blues. Between the CFC festivities and weekend-long alumni events, the highlight of the game is always the special “suite-hopping.” If you’re lucky enough to snag a pass to be a guest, then you probably witnessed some political “hob knobbing” and quiet deal-making among the “ballers” and “shot callers.” CAU Panthers lost to the Grambling State University Tigers 31-20. Fidel Marquez, ComEd SVP of Governmental and External Affairs, was on hand to introduce the presentation on the company’s commitment to STEM and the arts. In addition, LFW has committed to Chicago’s relief efforts to Puerto Rico through collaborations with its sponsors and community partners. On Sunday night, Surround Sound of Fashion had a SOLD-OUT crowd at the Logan Center for the Arts. ENTERTAINMENT Northlight Theatre opens its 2017-2018 season with The Chicago Premier of “The Legend of Georgia McBride” By Matthew Lopez Directed by Lauren Shouse September 14 – October 22 By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play There will come a time in everyone’s life when you will have to make a very important decision to help propel you into your future. Whether you take the opportunity or not is totally up to you. But discovering who you are along the way and what you have to offer is priceless, not only to you but to your family and society as well. In “The Legend of Georgia McBride,” the audience gets a glimpse of what happens when you do take the chance and discover who you are through the unfolding story of a drag Brenda and Rick queen. This is not your typical drag queen story. It is a wonderful and McCain electrifying story (musical comedy) with a lot of heart. This play introduced us to the world of drag, diversity, and personal success. In this musical, we witnessed the transformation of a “straight guy” into a “drag queen” through the character Casey (Nate Santana), who comes into his own with an inspirational message of hope. “The Legend of Georgia McBride” was more than a wardrobe change; it was a life-changing play to understanding the totality of self-expression.

The Legend of Georgia McBride: Taking Control of Your True Voice
Sean Blake as Miss Tracy Mills Casey, the down on his luck Elvis impersonator, just wants to take care of his family. However, in the process, he finds out that the small bar where he works is changing the entertainment to a full out “Drag Show,” and in order
for him to keep his job there, the Elvis rhinestone costume has to come off and the high heels must come on. Decisions have to be made quickly because Casey has a very upset wife (Leslie Ann Sheppard), an overdrawn checking account, late rent and a baby on the way. Casey reluctantly makes his decision to become a “Drag Queen” at the bar without discussing his new position with his wife. In doing so, a relationship is formed with Miss Tracy Mills (Sean Blake) the “Drag Mother,” who becomes Casey’s mentor and guide. This new way of making money at this Florida bar has definitely paid off for the bar and Casey in more ways than one. Unlikely individuals are brought together from different walks of life and a family is formed who share the same commonality of personal issues such as finding who you are and owning it when you discover your authentic self. Playwright Matthew Lopez and Director Lauren Shouse were sure to carry the message of “we are more the same than not” throughout their presentation of a different world of the theatrical musical comedy, leaving us with an unexpected message of love and hope. We recommend this play because it was more than a feel-good play with remarkable talent on stage. “The Legend of Georgia McBride” came with a lot of laughable moments and sassy wit. Even with the laughter, it was a play that asked you to become open-minded to the differences in the world that may ultimately bring you closer when your sense of benevolence and impartiality have been stimulated. Losing Homecoming at Whitney Young HS By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Three days before the 2017 Whitney Young High School homecoming game, students, faculty, parents, and most importantly in this case the football team’s players learned that their season had been cancelled. This year, instead of football, the Dolphin faithful celebrated their homecoming week with a soccer game versus Curie Metropolitan High School. Whitney Young Principal Dr. Joyce Kenner attributed the first ever cancellation of the football team’s homecoming game and season in her more than 20 years as principal to a combination of injuries, lack of interest, and academic ineligibility. She said the team is obligated to dress 22 players and only had 19 players available including freshmen and sophomores. She guaranteed that next year the football team will return with a full season. “Unfortunately, this is a collection of issues that we had to deal with,” said Kenner. “We don’t want to embarrass the football players, we want to recognize them for their hard work through last summer and up to this point.” True to Kenner’s word, all of the members of the WYHS football team were honored at midcourt of the school’s basketball court during a pep rally held on Thursday, Sept. 28, where they received a standing ovation from their peers, faculty, administrators, and parents. Kenner announced too that due to the recognition of Yom Kippur on Friday, Sept. 29, the homecoming dance was moved to Saturday, Oct. 21 and will be accompanied with an additional week of events leading up to it beginning on Monday, Oct. 16. Players and their parents openly expressed their displeasure over the cancellations. Among the frustrated players was WYHS senior running back/linebacker Le’Mark Russell. Russell said he woke up at 4 a.m. multiple days throughout the summer to prepare for football practices and conditioning over the summer. His mother, LaDonna Powell, was by his side throughout his football journey this season. “I was very disappointed when [Dr. Kenner] cut the program,” said Russell. “Since January I’ve been all in on football, I’ve done something related to football every single day, and after I put all that work in to not play my homecoming game was a waste.” Powell called the abrupt ending to the season “disheartening.” She said she spoke to other players and their mothers and found a similar response. “They practice and they do what they can do and homecoming is their biggest thing,” said Powell. “When you think of a homecoming game, you think of the football players and the football team so for that to be taken away from them I think it’s been stripped.” Melanie Young whose son Maxwell Young, a senior offensive and defensive lineman at WYHS, said the cancellation of the homecomwww.chicagodefender.com

LaDonna Powell and son Le’Mark Russell ing game and season was “absolutely devastating.” “The boys are sad, there’s been a lot of sad faces, some of the upcoming students have talked about transferring if they’re not going to continue with the football program,” said Young. Young said she thinks it’s time for a change in leadership of the football team, which in turn will change the culture of the program. “The kids don’t want to try out and see what it’s like because they hear what [Whitney Young HS head coach Tim Franken] is like,” said Young. “The school does not like to lose. They were up against hard teams with inexperienced players and these boys deserved the spotlight in there today, and this was their day and their prep rally, and they took that from them.” Powell and Russell told the Defender there was a tentative agreement between the football team and its players that if a few of the players deemed academically ineligible were able to lift their grades by Tuesday, Sept. 26, Kenner would allow the team to continue its season - an agreement she confirmed took place. “[Kenner] cut the program on Monday but the players said they had until Tuesday to bring it up,” said Russell. “Maybe there’s a lack of communication between us and the principal, I don’t know, but I know with more time those ineligibilities would’ve been corrected and we would’ve had enough players to play.” “If the season had to be cut, I rather it be cut after the homecoming game,” said Russell. Kenner justified her actions by stating that she wanted to make sure WYHS placed a competitive and safe team out on the field of play. She said the majority of the ineligible players would’ve been freshmen and sophomores. “The students did have an opportunity to improve their grades over the next couple of days,

Welcome To “W”ville! Nationals Up 1st On Road To Repeat By Eugene McIntosh The Bigs Media They fought their way past the Milwaukee Brewers and sent the St. Louis Cardinals packing to earn a second straight National League Central division Championship and now the “OFFS” are set! #11More is the new hashtag as the Cubs travel to D.C. to face the Washington Nationals in the National League Division Series. Games 1 and 2 will be played at Nationals Park with the opener Friday at 6:31 p.m. and Game 2 Saturday to start at 4:38 p.m. The Nats clinched their 4th division title in six years on September 10th and have been cruising since. The Cubs back to back division titles are their first consecutive NL Central crowns since 2007 & 2008 (they were swept in the NLDS both years). Washington won the regular season series 4-3. Below we take a look at the playoff matchup. PitchingThe Nats trio of Max Scherzer (who suffered a hamstring injury Saturday night), Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez are top five in the National League in ERA--all under 3.00. They combined for 46 wins and are just straight up dominant. The bullpen gets the job done if the starters can go deep. If they’re on point, it could be a quick one. For the Cubs, the starting pitching has been 2nd best in the NL among rotations since the All-Star break. They have a 3.38 ERA and have gone 35-14 in the 73 games. Their bullpen will be anchored by Mike Montgomery, Carl Edwards Jr. (he’s held opponents to a .134 avg) and Wade Davis who was perfect in save opportunities until September 23rd. Pedro Strop and Brian Duensing will be key as well. I wonder if Hector Rondon or Justin Wilson will get one of the other spots. HittingWith All-Star Bryce Harper (.319 29 HR 87 RBI) returning from a bone bruise and calf strain in his left leg, the 4 days in between the season finale and Game 1 of the NLDS could help him in the end. Daniel Murphy (.322 23 HR 93 RBI), Ryan Zimmerman (.303 36 HR 108 RBI) and Anthony Rendon (.301 25 HR 100 RBI) have all had MVP campaigns. Howie Kendrick, Jayson Werth, Michael Taylor and Treat Turner are no pushovers. Simply put...they’re loaded from top to bottom. Whitney Young, continued from, Page 17
however, even if we had those students to become eligible, we were still one student low or at the number required, but that still did not mean we were putting a quality program on the field to compete against a varsity level program from another school,” said Kenner. Kenner responded, too, to the players’ desire to play despite not having an ideal number of participants. “My responsibility as the principal of this institution is to make sure that every student in this building participating in any activity is safe, and those conditions were not safe for some of the students on the field,” said Kenner. “I am not ever going to put students in harm’s way. I respect the students wanting to play and having the commitment and the determination, but as the adult here, I thought it was the best thing to do.” www.chicagodefender.com
Javier Baez “El Mago” and the Cubs head to Washington D.C. to take on the Washington Nationals in the NLDS (John L. Alexander/The Bigs Visuals) Roberto Clemente Award nominee Anthony Rizzo led the offensive attack for the Cubs. He hit .273 and tied his career high in both HR (32) and RBI (109). Reigning NL MVP Kris Bryant chipped in hitting .296 with 29 HR and 73 RBI. Ian Happ (24), Willson Contreras (21), Kyle Schwarber (30) and Javier Baez (23) round out the Cubs hitters with over 20 home runs. Chicago has 422 runs and 105 homers since the break. They win with the long ball and will have to do much better with runners in scoring position if they plan on advancing to the NLCS. Defense/IntangiblesNationals Anthony Rendon and Trea Thomas are great defenders along with Matt Wieters, but that’s where it ends. Bryce Harper is good but who knows how good coming off the injury. We all know that runs are harder to come by in the “offs” and defense has never been a strong spot for the Nationals. They better hope the “O”
can make up for the “D.” As for Dusty, I think he’s a damn good skipper and I’d love to see him get one, but it won’t happen this year. In October, defense is more important than it ever is and there’s nothing like a Russell/Baez combo up the middle. When healthy, Addison Russell is among the league leaders in defensive runs saved and “El Mago” is just... well...El Mago! Jason Heyward and Anthony Rizzo have been their usual Gold Glove selves and the overall team D has picked up late in the season. Joe Maddon will get into his esoteric zone and the guys will follow his lead. The Cubs depth is unmatched. Prediction Cubs in 4. They will take Game 1 and finish it out at Wrigley...a rematch with the LA Dodgers awaits! Stay in tune with the Cubs Playoff run on Twitter at @ itsthebigs and chicagodefender.com
The stunning cancellation still transpired despite the attempts of two of WYHS’ young women volunteering to play. Kenner said she asked one of the young women why she wanted to play and the response given was the young woman wanted to “help the football team.” “Two young ladies asked if they could play and, of course, legally they have a right to play but the problem with that was you need 12 days of practice before you can get on the field,” said Kenner, who explained the young ladies wouldn’t have had enough practice time to be eligible to play. Recruiting football players to play at Whitney Young has been an ongoing issue. Franken said of the five seniors on the team only two have been with the program all four years - three joined the team last year as juniors. He said attracting the right players who understand the grind involved with playing football is important. He said in years past they’ve had young ladies play on the team, too.
“We work hard on recruiting inside the building, first of all,” said Franken. “Football is a bit of a different sport. It’s not a participatory sport where you take kids out of the hall and put them on the field; we’ve tried that, and several of the kids who came didn’t make it through one practice.” Franken said he’s confident that after a meeting with Kenner the two will work out a game plan to reach more students. “I think we have to make some changes; we have to reach out,” said Franken. “We only have so much control of who gets into Whitney Young with the selective enrollment system. You not only have to test well, you have to meet the tier criteria and that’s been something that’s been really detrimental to the football program because there are kids who test in who are good academically but they’re wrong tier so they don’t get selected.” THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • October 4 - 10, 2017 23
