CITY NEWS Grand Marshals Named for Pink Hat Run, Walk and Roll Illinois State Rep. Juliana Stratton and Alderman Pat Dowell have been named Grand Marshals for the inaugural Pink Hat Run, Walk and Roll, a 5K and onemile recreational event. The elected officials will greet participants and launch the start on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Chicago’s South Loop.

Both women represent the area in which the race is being staged, the South Loop, Museum Campus and revitalized McCormick Square area of the city.

Both are “pink hatters” in their Juliana Stratton own right, fighting for the rights of women throughout the city and state.

$400K Awarded to Community-Based Nonprofit Groups For Projects Near Transit Stations Fourteen community-based nonprofit organizations in Chicago are the first recipients of grants from L-Evated Chicago and Enterprise Community Partners as part of a new initiative that intends to strengthen racial equity, prosperity and resiliency in neighborhoods by using transit-oriented development as the catalyst for progress and change.

The initiative, L-Evated Chicago, is a growing collaborative that is leading community-based transformations in areas around the city’s train system. It’s working to create opportunity and connections for residents by focusing on four key areas: racial equity; health; climate change and environmental issues; and arts and culture.

Enterprise Community Partners, a national organization that supports the development of well-designed, affordable and diverse communities, is a founder partner of L-Evated Chicago. Since 2014, its Chicago office has provided $2.5 million dollars in grants to the Chicago region.

A total of $330,000 in funding has been awarded to community development organizations to build their capacity, advance transit-oriented development and carry out affordable housing activities that address the needs of low-income households. The following have received grants: •Urban Juncture, Preservation of Affordable Housing, Neighborhood Housing Services, and BIG: Blacks in Green, to advance stakeholder collaboration, housing initiatives, and business incubation efforts around the Green Line’s 51st Street 55th Street, and Cottage Grove train stations.

A total of $100,000 in funding has been awarded to nonprofit organizations for projects that will create awareness, learning opportunities, community participation and public interest around the L-Evated Chicago mission of promoting more equitable, healthy, sustainable, and culturally vibrant communities at and around the prioritized transit stations. The following has received a grant: Black Girls Break Bread, to create focused and nuanced programming to promote the social and emotional wellness of Black women and girls at all seven transit stations.

Chance the Rapper to Perform At Obama Foundation Community Event The Obama Foundation announced a closing event of the Obama Foundation Summit: a community event that will bring together thousands to celebrate civic leaders making a difference around the world and inspire those in attendance and watching live to make a positive impact in their own communities.

ife can sometimes throw us a curve ball, but the will to overcome obstacles can be brought to the surface when we are faced with challenges.

And when it comes to breast cancer— Black women face a big challenge.

To begin with, studies have found that African-American women have a 40 percent higher mortality rate than White women facing breast cancer.

The Discovery

While lying in bed one evening, Tenika Whitehead accidentally ran her hand across her breast and felt a lump. It felt different and out of the norm from her regular self-examinations—so her alarm went off. She went to the doctor for an examination and testing. The results came back: Whitehead was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer.

At 31, the mother of three did not expect to be a part of an alarming number of young women under 40 battling the disease.

In addition to the alarming national mortality rates, an African-American woman in Chicago is more than twice as likely to die of breast cancer compared to White women; but it has not always been like this.

In 1980 there was little difference in death rates between the two groups. While a decline in breast cancer deaths among White women is a notable success in the fight against the disease, the simultaneous increase in the death rate among Black women implies that advances in breast care over the last 28 years have benefited some, but not all.

because you know your body is changing. There is no family history of it so there’s nothing that will make me check every so often or to be worried that this may be happening,” said Whitehead.

Whitehead’s form of breast cancer is one of the more aggressive (triple negative breast cancer) found in African-American women. She finished her first round of eight-week chemo sessions and is entering her final round, which consists of 12-weeks of chemotherapy.

“If it wasn’t for my children and my family, but my children more importantly, I would not have done chemo. I would have taken my chances; and see what happened.

But [I did it] because I have young children and I know they need me around and I need to be around to see them grow up.”

The Face of Breast Cancer Early detection and quality resources available to women in low disparity areas have improved with the addition of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Now, under the new presidential administration, the healthcare reform is being stripped and rising insurance premiums will once again threaten quality treatment for patients.

At 36, she was at the top of her game, at the helm of

building a successful company when Donaldson received the diagnosis.

“A lot of people asked me what that felt like, I was shocked. It was at a time of my professional career when the company was taking off. At a time when I was looking to focus on my personal life, I was working so hard and wanted to get the company to where it is today when I received this diagnosis. I thought, ‘you have got to be kidding me?’—like it was unfair,” she recounts. “On top of that, when you’re young, Black and diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s not that you don’t think you’re invincible but you don’t think it’s something that can happen to you.”

Over the years, images of breast cancer survivors showcased lots of White women in pink walking in groups, holding hands showing their perseverance to beat the odds or paying tribute to loved ones who lost the battle.

But not many faces of color reflected back showing African-American breast cancer survivors until the last few years when more and more women have stepped up with their stories.

Telling Our Stories Donaldson’s company has launched a campaign to dispel the stigma that can be associated with the silence of sharing breast cancer stories among the African-American community.

The Breast Cancer Under 40 campaign features women who have survived and persevered their diagnoses of cancer before their 40th birthday.

She says, “There’s some kind of stigma on Black women that we’re more private. We’re not necessarily comfortable at talking about things like sexuality and body type stuff and that can play a part as well. When we did the survivor, a campaign focusing on women under 40, people continued on page 4

were coming up out of the woodwork but they were not willing to share it.”

“One of my close friends was diagnosed and she didn’t post anything about it. They were basically feeling, ‘I’m just going to live my life’ and I think White women give themselves more permission to be vulnerable and to say, ‘I went through this with my challenges.’ I feel as Black women, we have such a super woman complex at times, trying to deal with things and move on,” said Donaldson.

Between the ages of 60 and 84, breast cancer incidence rates are markedly higher in White women than Black women. However, Black women have a higher incidence rate before age 45 and are more likely to die from breast cancer at every age without necessary care.

Private and Public Healthcare

Both Whitehead and Donaldson were diagnosed under 40.

Currently battling the disease, Tenika works part-time as a city mail carrier and utilizes Cook County’s healthcare services. Not privately insured as a part-time employee, she says the support has been solid.

“So far it’s been pretty good. I haven’t had any problems. I haven’t received any bills—they cover pretty much everything,” she said.

But as the Trump administration works—diligently to chip away at ACA with the most recent blow an executive order to end subsidies to insurers selling plans to low-income customers.

The ACA was established in 2010 by President Barack Obama to make health insurance affordable to more people and to provide coverage to those with pre-existing conditions with rising premiums. More importantly, federal dollars were designated for public healthcare such as Cook County hospitals and clinics. Close to 294,000 purchased plans through the Obamacare marketplace in addition to 640,000 residents under Medicaid expansion.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle admits the hatchet job to kill President Barack Obama’s legacy will affect thousands of families under Cook County’s healthcare system.

“The Republicans are trying to cap Medicaid or cap your eligibility as an individual. So, if you have a lifetime cap on your Medicaid benefits and you’re a person who has some serious diseases like cancer and cancer treatments, you can pretty much blow your cap right away,” says Preckwinkle.

She says the federal government would allocate block grant money to the states where the states get to choose

how they spend their Medicaid money as “opposed to individuals having access” to the program.

“Both of these things would be a nightmare for us here in Illinois and across the country,” Preckwinkle says.

Frustrated at the possibility of significant lay-offs as a result of the sweetened beverage tax repeal, Preckwinkle knows the bigger fight is in Washington, D.C. “We’re in an environment in which the Republicans continue to try to eliminate the affordable parts of the Affordable Care Act but particularly Medicaid expansion, and one of the things that’s made our health care system that matter for our patients.”

Although patients can access good medical care at the county facilities, hospital staff carry various responsibilities. Donaldson says with a private insurer, there is a difference in the level of care.

“I was diagnosed at a community hospital on the South Side of Chicago. I was in a waiting room with low-income Black and Latino women even though I have really good insurance. Once I received my diagnosis, I thought, ‘I’m getting out of here and I’m going to Northwestern Hospital’.” She said although she wasn’t going to change the outcome, she felt she had a better chance of beating the odds at a reputable hospital. “I reflected on the fact that a lot of people don’t have the opportunity to get up and go to Northwestern, and I got to really see what this means.”

According to the study, poverty, less education, and a lack of health insurance are also associated with lower breast cancer survival rates. Breast cancer patients who reside in lower-income areas have lower 5-year survival rates than those in higher-income areas at every stage of diagnosis.

“Those socioeconomic things are things. When you go to a Northwestern, your radiologist is breast cancer trained, meaning they have participated in a fellowship where they may read 10,000 mammograms a year. A resident at a local hospital maybe doing x-rays for broken bones, sonograms and breast cancer. Northwestern may have a better process for follow up services like breast navigation. So being well aware of all those intricacies and nuances, I think makes me in a better position to speak to different audiences about the importance of touching on disparities and how you know there are differences and those differences matter.”

Local Organizations and Resources

One of the main reasons women from low-disparity communities are afraid to seek proper healthcare is costs.

Organizations such as Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force and Screen to Live both are non-for-profit groups that help women with resources from free mammogram screenings and pap tests for uninsured women.

These organizations have joined a larger network of outreach programs as part of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to form the Chicago Breast Cancer Quality Consortium. Chicago fashion designer Barbara Bates, a breast cancer survivor, formed her namesake foundation to bring awareness to African American and Latino women through fundraising efforts. Her foundation has raised $625,000 from her annual 5K Walk/Run for Sinai Health System.

For women who continue to battle through the storm while maintaining dignity, self-determination and a balancing act of a “new normal”—the support system of family, friends, co-workers and often faith keeps them focused on healing and recovery.

Whitehead was upfront in explaining her illness to her kids, rather than pretending everything is the same. She felt it wouldn’t be fair to them. “They’ve known from the time they [doctors] actually gave me the diagnosis; they have been there 100 percent. We talk about everything and we pray about it. We laugh about it and we cry about it. They have been there throughout the whole ordeal— even my 3-year-old.”

As an entrepreneur and lawyer, Donaldson feels she can make a difference through her company, TGIN, with partial proceeds from retail sales going to help educate “women with breast health and breast education around early detection awareness.”

Having meetings with organizations such as Outcome Health allows Donaldson to understand the changes in technology to bring better resources to neighborhood clinics such as large-scale tablets for doctors to “democratized information when it comes to health” and being able to weigh in on what it’s like for lower income women or someone who has a lower education who may need to beat this, she says.

“Women have to realize in this day and age what they need to do or be aware of to be inspired. There are more resources available to help people and to also help the families and support system of the people who are dealing with breast cancer.” www.chicagodefender.com

Trevor Noah Visits Northwestern to Talk Race, Identity In America

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Comedian and writer Trevor Noah recently sat down with New York Times reporter John Eligon for a special one-on-one discussion on race and identity in America.

The new live series “Get with the Times” kicked off at the Caldron Auditorium on the campus of Northwestern University to a packed house. Nearly 90 campuses were invited to watch the live stream conversation in which the host of the The Daily Show was very candid about his upbringing in South Africa and African-American culture.

Reading an excerpt of his New York Times bestseller “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood,” he talks about his early school days.

“I started pre-school when I was three, primary school when I was five. In my class, we had all kinds of kids—Black kids, White kids, Indian kids and colored kids. Most of the White kids were pretty well off, every child of color wasn’t but because of scholarships we all sat at the same table.

We wore the same blue blazers, the same grey slacks and skirts. We all had the same books, the same teachers— there was no racial separation. Every clique was racially mixed,” he read.

He discussed feeling in between the adversity of being a “colored” man as opposed to the identity of a “Black” man in his native country. Because of his ability to learn and speak several African languages, it allowed him to break the ice. “It wasn’t common to find a White or colored person who spoke African languages. During apartheid White people were taught those languages were beneath them.

The fact that I did speak African languages immediately endeared me with the Black kids. They asked, ‘How come you speak these languages? You’re not Black.’ I answered because I’m Black like you.”

On race in America, the comedian says the biggest thing to do is to talk candidly about race. “It’s not easy, but I do know that’s one of the most powerful tools to have. When

I say talk about it—I’m speaking to predominately White people, it’s a frightening conversation to have but that conversation is race. That conversation is understanding the very fiber of the country you’re living in. Those conversations need to be had with your friends and family.”

He discussed the influence of American Black culture and the complexities of understanding why there is still anguish among generational disconnection to Black people’s ancestral roots. His topics also ranged from the current presidential administration to empowering the next

generation’s stance on being vocal through the power of solid journalism.

Many students quietly listened to the exchange between Northwestern alum, Eligon, and Noah as some heads nodded in agreement and others twitched nervously in their seats. Taking questions from students remotely from other colleges—the first installment of “Get with The Times”-- was a successful hour of straight forward dialogue.

Tio Hardiman: The Next Governor of Illinois?

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Chicago activist Tio Hardiman is back on the campaign trail with the Illinois governor’s mansion square in his sights for the second time in four years.

Hardiman’s previous run for governor in 2014 revealed the former director of CeaseFire Illinois, an anti-violence program based in Chicago, had a solid well of support throughout the state when he squared-off against then governor and Democratic Party incumbent Pat Quinn in the March 18, 2014, primary. Although Hardiman would ultimately fail to receive the nomination, he finished with 125,500 votes or 28.1 percent of the vote statewide compared to Quinn’s 321,818 votes or 71.9 percent, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections. He would fare about the same in Cook County where he received 19,442 votes or 20.31 percent compared to Quinn’s 76,263 votes or 79.69 percent, according to the Cook County Clerk’s Office.

Hardiman’s path to Springfield may have just become a little clearer as Chicago alderman Ameya Pawar (47th Ward) recently dropped out of the race leaving J.B. Pritzker, Chris Kennedy, State Sen. Daniel Biss, among others on a crowded ticket.

Hardiman, never one to mince words, was direct when explaining why he decided to run for gubernatorial office again.

“I’m really the last great hope for my people, African-American people,” said Hardiman. “The reason why I talk about the Black community is because everyone wants the Black vote. The Black vote is a hustle. Black death is a hustle. The governorship has been dominated

by White men since the inception of the state of Illinois and it’s time to change the narrative.”

Among Hardiman’s early campaign promises are: reducing the number of killings in Chicago by 50 percent, reducing the African-American unemployment statewide, balancing the state budget, raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, ensuring equal pay for women, and more.

“The majority of Illinois is working class, middle class, and poor people, and if we supported someone from our

Tio Hardiman own population, from our own group, we would win this election by a landslide victory,” said Hardiman.

Education Hardiman said there’s “false leadership” in Illinois as he called the state itself strong. He said he wants to support schools with additional funding and bring an end to non-productivity. He said in the face of under enrolled schools, he would suggest “downsizing schools” instead of closing them as a means to meet the needs of the students.

“Every year students in Chicago have to wonder if they’re going to start school or not,” said Hardiman.

“That’s called psychological warfare, and what’s happening is these wealthy people cannot identify with a young guy worried if he’s going to start school on time; but because of political gang banging, the kids continue to be in the crossfire.”

Hardiman said he would make Illinois more attractive to the nation’s best teachers with the hopes of improving education. He said for starters he would protect teachers’ pensions, increase salaries for teachers, and more. He called teachers the backbone of the nation for what they provide to children.

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer Alderman Ameya Pawar has officially dropped out of the Illinois governor’s race. The 47th Ward alderman ran a solid platform addressing racial disparity, social injustice and fighting for fair economic empowerment among the middle class. Bringing on Cairo mayor Tyrone Coleman as his running mate for lieutenant governor in late August was considered the first multicultural pairing to run for the state’s highest public office. Pawar, the son of Asian Indian immigrants, was the first American Indian gubernatorial candidate to run for Illinois governor.

Daniel Biss: “Ameya Pawar ran an incredible campaign that elevated the effects of systemic inequality on working families.

out Illinois and not just Chicago. He said with regards to the proposed Amazon headquarters coming to Chicago, it should be located in the Austin, Englewood or South Shore communities or in East St. Louis, Ill. “Those communities need some type of economic development, economic uplifting,” said Hardiman. “It would be an honor for Amazon and other Fortune 500 companies to open up a location in one of those communities because they keep talking about their concern about the plight of the people in the inner city; then let us help the inner city right in their neighborhoods.”

Hardiman revealed his economic stimulus plan, Hardiman-Avery 2020 plan, which featured various methods to produce new revenue for the state. He said if elected through these taxes, it would total in 20 billion in new revenue in four years and that he will also take a “closer look” at the revenue generated by the state lottery.

“The 2020 plan is all wrapped up in pushing the Financial Transaction Tax here in Illinois, which can bring in three billion dollars in new revenue, and supporting the Progressive Tax, which means we would tax people according to their income status,” said Hardiman.

Hardiman said with the revenue generated from his 2020 plan, he would use $50 million to fund capital construction projects in central and southern Illinois, open “state-of-the-art” mental health facilities in every county in the state, and provide [help for] small businesses to stay in business as the minimum wage is raised to $15.

Recidivism Hardiman said he wants to help ex-offenders returning home become productive members of society by providing them with wrap around services. He said counseling, job training, mental health support services, and emotional services are part of his plan to reduce recidivism. He said he wants to reduce the number of inmates in the Illinois Dept. of Corrections from 52,000 to 30,000 statewide.

“When someone has been incarcerated for a number of years, when they’re released, they shouldn’t just be released to go back into society and do what they need to do; they need more support services to have all the tools they need to be successful,” said Hardiman.

Chris Kennedy: “Ameya Pawar is a committed public servant motivated by social justice. We thank him for giving voice to the people of Illinois who have been left behind by a failed government that benefits a wealthy and well-connected few. Ideas and solutions from a thoughtful, progressive leader like Alderman Pawar are critical to the future of our state. We should all be disappointed in a system where money is driving people out of politics and, in turn, silencing conversations that drive change.”

The TRiiBE’s First Docu-Series “Another Life” Wins Filmmaking Grant

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer New digital media company, The TRiiBE, is one of nine awardees’ of this year’s Chicago Digital Media Production Fund (CDMPF), a project of Voqal Fund that is administered by Chicago Filmmakers. Triibe is being honored for its first vérité docu-poetry series, “Another Life,” which captures the aftermath and trauma Chicago’s Black millennials endure after a loved one is lost to gun violence.

This year, the CDMPF awarded a total of $100,000 in grants in amounts ranging from $2,200 to $18,000. The fund strives to support socially conscious media arts projects intended for free online distribution, according to a CDMPF press release.

This year the awardees’ topics range from trauma related to gun violence to sickle cell anemia and more.

The TRiiBE’s directive is to produce innovative content that speaks to and re-

shapes the narrative of Chicago’s Black millennials. The company was launched by its co-founders, Morgan Elise Johnson, a filmmaker by trade, and Tiffany Walden, a freelance reporter and former breaking news reporter for The Orlando Sentinel, in February. Currently, Walden serves as The TRiiBE’s editor-in-chief while Johnson is its creative director.

Johnson recalled the origins of “Another Life” stemmed from an organic reaction when Walden checked her Facebook feed after learning someone in Chicago was shot to see if she knew the individual -- a practice not uncommon for Black Chicagoans of a certain age group.

“We both thought this was a profound moment, checking your Facebook feed after someone dies,” said Johnson. “We started to unpack on how healthy or unhealthy that was and we knew we had something.”

She said based on that desire, the next thought was to talk to the friends, siblings, and more who had lost someone to gun violence and to understand how millennials are coping.

“We were going with the idea of running with another story, and then at the last minute I was like, ‘you know what, the dominant narrative of Chicago is now gun violence and that’s being re-enforced in present day politics with Donald Trump constantly making references to Chicago’,” said Johnson, “We needed to tackle the narrative of gun violence in a way that’s often neglected, which is to talk about how it’s affecting our generation, Black millennials, the only generation that’s really grown up in this age of gun proliferation.”

“Another Life” chronicles the lives of three Black Chicagoans whose lives are rocked by gun violence: Amanie Foster, 21, whose cousin Cory Foster, Jr. was murdered; Perrick “Moon” Robinson, 31, whose mentee, Jonathan Mills, a former Chicago prep basketball star, was murdered; and Martinez Sutton, 35, whose sister, Rekia Boyd, was fatally shot and killed by off-duty Chicago police officer Dante Servin in 2012.

“With ‘Another Life,’ our goal is to spark an open dialogue about the ongoing trauma in our community while also changing the conversation about Chicago violence to one focused on healing and rebuilding as a step to help #HealChicago,” said Walden, in a press release.

Johnson, a native of Chicago’s northern suburbs, explained that although “Another Life” was originally intended to be a three-part series, the overwhelmingly positive response the first episodes received prompted more entries to be created.

The raw intimacy of “Another Life” is apparent as Johnson stated she often filmed by herself without a production crew or even additional lighting, always using just the resources the self-funded TRiiBE had at its disposal. Johnson stated while she cannot directly relate to the experiences of the principles of “Another Life,” through her expertise as a filmmaker, she was able to connect with her subjects on a very personal level.

Walden, a Chicago native hailing from

the North Lawndale neighborhood, said she knows people who learned of the death of one of their loved ones through social media. She said “Another Life” is “powerful” to her because it unlocks a conversation she herself has often had.

“The way I grew up, gun violence and shootings were a kind of a way of life. You were raised to listen out for certain things.

I remember there were times where a drive by would happen and you would have to get on the floor and wait for it to be over with,” said Walden. “You have those happen to you until you’re numb to it. Watching Morgan film and telling these stories about how these instances have affected people personally, it adds a lot of depth to the situation. It takes you out of this being an everyday thing for you.”

One aspect Walden and Johnson recognized while creating “Another Life” is the widespread narrative that Chicago is the Wild, Wild West in many respects.

Johnson said there’s “no nuance” to the conversation when discussing Chicago and calls the coverage “disrespectful” and lacking of human decency. Walden said she wishes people were more sympathetic to the choices people had to make given the circumstances they’re faced with that are beyond their control.

“There’s an assumption that people live on these streets and in these neighborhoods and they want this life,” said Walden. “That you grow up wanting to be in gang life or you grow up wanting to be these things... when really it’s a result of systematic oppression around you that you end up in these situations. In the past, there’s always been this assumption that people are living how they want to live, and if they didn’t want to, they would change.”

Johnson said the CDMPF grant will provide the funding to finish filming and producing the final installments of “Another Life.” She said the final episodes of the series will be released in January, completing a yearlong cycle in the lives of their subjects.

Gertrude and James Wooten received the Award of Excellence for their commitment to philanthropy and for being longtime advocates of Congo Square Theatre Tony Award-nominee Anthony Chisholm joined Congo Square Ensemble member Ron Conner in an exclusive scene from Congo Square’s upcoming production of Jitney by August Wilson. The production runs January 8 through February 11, 2018, at the Athenaeum Theatre.

Media veteran Sylvia Ewing played mistress of ceremonies for the stellar program which featured advisory board member and actor/writer/director/producer Harry Lennix (NBC’s The Black List).

Lennix also pledged 1% of the proceeds from the film Revival to support Congo Square Theatre’s future endeavors.

Led by Executive Director TaRon Patton, The Conga Square Theatre was created 18 years ago with the mission of empowering, educating and inspiring others through the works of art that reflect the African diaspora and African American community. The company’s first benefactor was the late writer Langston Hughes who contributed $10,000 to help Conga Square Theatre.

“A View From the Bridge:” A Raw and Riveting Experience

Life has a way of forcing us to make choices--choices that we sometimes regret and choices that we regret but can never take back. These life-changing decisions are what Ivo Van Hove brings to the stage at The Goodman Theatre, where we witness the life of one man’s choices that will forever change the lives of those around him.

Tony Award winner Van Hove’s remarkable re-imagining of Arthur Miller’s “A View From The Bridge” takes us on a journey of this provocative tale of discovery and exploration with heavy symbolism, allegory, and imagery infused into poignant characters. Van Hove introduces us to a very immersive experience by allowing the audience to have the opportunity to plunge directly into the drama with on-stage seating (via being on a bridge) which allowed us to witness the scenes up close for a different perspective.

This American tragedy set in 1955 begins in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge (Red Hook) in New York. The play is very intense with daring and bold scenes of drama that will provoke your intellect with the most unspeakable thoughts of ambivalence.

The play opens up with Alfieri (Ezra Knight) who was raised in the 1900s in Italy but now is working as an American lawyer in New York. He narrates the story of Eddie Carbone (Ian Bedford), an Italian American longshoreman who lives with his wife, Beatrice (Andrus Nichols), and her orphaned niece, Catherine (Catherine Combs).

There is a bridge emerging within Eddie Carbone that his lawyer friend can see from a mile away, but he is conflicted by his choice of standing still knowing that there is a seed growing within Eddie that is materializing into an improper love, lust, obsession, of jealousy and thoughts of

Although Eddie is presumed to be a good man, one can quickly see his possessive and affectionate love that he shares for his niece Catherine. These sexually improper thoughts that plague Eddie’s mind are due to the strong passion that he has for her. The orphaned niece, who is living with them, is grateful to Eddie and cares about him like a father; however, she is unaware of his desire towards her.

Eddie’s unnatural feelings for his niece start to affect his marriage; and the little girl he could always count on meeting him at the door with hugs and kisses is now a burgeoning young lady who is discovering her sexuality and experimenting with a new makeover. Eddie doesn’t like her maturing because he thinks others will now find her attractive too.

He tries but seemingly fails to repress his feelings; his overprotective opinions about her showing too much leg and her walking provocatively is evident to his wife Beatrice, who recognizes his unnatural lust for Catherine and believes it’s the main reason she hasn’t been “with” Eddie for three months.

After criticizing Catherine’s new look and her wanting to get a job, which would bring her too close to other men, Eddie is now faced with another dilemma; his two immigrant cousins from Italy are coming to live with them.

He seems content to help them live the American dream; however, when one of the young men Rodolpho (Daniel

Abeles) falls for his niece Catherine, Eddie conjures up a story that his cousin is queer and is using his niece to get a green card to become legalized in America. Rodolpho’s desire to be with Catherine amounts to betrayal to Eddie so Eddie tries to end the fairytale romance by speaking to a lawyer named Alfieri regarding Rodolpho.

After talking to Alfieri and being told repeatedly that there was nothing he can do legally to break up their romance, Eddie is enraged with jealousy and tries to get the brothers deported. This opens the door for mistrust and this leads to the ineffable secret, which ultimately drives him to commit the definitive betrayal. A call to the deportation office is the measure in which he seeks to end his anxieties for a love that was taboo; however, this choice, this final decision, is the beginning of his demise.

Hove is a Belgian theatre director known as the artistic director of Toneelgroep, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands and has won two Obie Awards for Best Production of an off-Broadway production in New York. Van Hove, who likes surprises, provided us with a somewhat predictable ending; however, the final scene was attention-grabbing and will take you by surprise. The play has been getting rave reviews, but we ask that you go see it for yourself and let us know what you think.

Independent Film Step Off the Block Premiers to Sold-Out Crowds Around town went to the premier of “Step Off the Block,” a movie by independent film director Will Adams featuring local actors from Chicago. This is Adams’ 8th independent film. The movie tells a story about a young person making a decision that affects him and ultimately his friend, and he is trying to decide if he made the right decision. The movie is filmed in Chicago and you will recognize a lot of our neighborhoods and night spots.

The movie premiered at the Studio Movie Grill on 87th. Two theaters were sold out for the event. The cast was fantastic and featured Community Activist Andrew Holmes and Julian Kenner, an alum of Jackson State University and the son of Greg and Dr. Joyce Kenner, Principal of Whitney Young H.S. In the Mix: CTU President Karen Lewis Recovers, NTA Challenges Dem Candidates

By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer This week has been gearing up to be a rollercoaster ride of events in our magical land of Chicago where outsiders are given the “side eye” and the side of town one grew up on is an immediate branded tag.

Sirens went off when the news of Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis suffered a stroke on last week. Lewis is currently in remission from brain cancer nearly two years ago. The fiery and fearless leader is beloved by many and despised by those who have been “checked” on occasion.

In an official statement released on Tuesday from Ms. Lewis, she Mary L. Datcher said: “I suffered a slight stroke last week and have since been hospitalized. It was so minor that doctors could barely see it upon my initial examination, so please know that my spirits are high and I am feeling pretty good. This is a minor setback in my recovery from brain cancer, but rest assured I will be back on my feet soon.

“As for the Chicago Teachers Union, our individual and collective work is unchanged. Our members are the true leaders of our union, and they will continue working hard every day for the schools our students deserve.

“Thanks to everyone who has sent prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery. My only request is that we refrain from talking policy and politics until I am back up to speed.

Once I return to 100 percent good health, I’ll be back to giving hell to the usual suspects—you know who you are.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel offered encouragement upon his “official” statement regarding Lewis’ minor setbacks; she is one of his staunchest critics.

“I reached out to Karen this morning to wish her a speedy recovery and, as anyone who knows Karen would assume, she was in good humor. Karen Lewis has always been a strong voice for Chicago’s children and Chicago’s teachers, and the strength of her voice is only matched by the strength of her will. A stroke can’t keep Karen Lewis down.”

Nope. From our observation, it will take a great deal to keep Karen Lewis down and away from the fight. We just pray she keeps focused on her health first and foremost. There’s enough heavy lifting to go around for others to carry the ball. (Placing my pick back in my afro as I raise my black fist in the air…)

Fists are still in the air for the fight to keep the National Teachers Academy (NTA) a pre-K to 8 grade school without disrupting 85 percent of its predominately Black students to relocate. A special gubernatorial forum on education hosted by Bronzeville Community Action Council brought out both children and parents of NTA to challenge Democratic candidates to keep the Level 1 school’s doors open. Candidates vowed to help in the fight to maintain NTA’s current position in the ever-growing gentrified South Loop; those for maintaining NTA’s position included

Domestic violence shadows so many households-both for men and women who are not always the abused but they can also be the abuser.

Sa’Rayah community whose names have grabbed headlines for past domestic altercations, but we find a way to excuse their “passing” behavior. How can you fight violence in the streets or keep repeat offenders off the street when one’s home reflects similar shard glass? Not dropping names but we need to do better and not reward bad behavior by “not” voting.

Dope, Fly & Fresh Everyone who knows me, also knows I love great musical talent—especially an awesome killer voice. I had a chance to check out singer/songwriter Sa’Rayah at her special advance listening party at The Promontory. The party doubled as her birthday party where friends, family and fans showed up to support the former contestant of NBC’s “The Voice” take center stage. Prior to her performance, she graciously worked the room, taking pictures with folks and thanking them for coming out. DJ Emmac spun for the evening as well as one of Sa’Rayah’s main producers on the project. Kudos to house music legend and producer Byron Stingily, who personally introduced the Chicago native. Don’t sleep on this awesome talent— you won’t be disappointed.

Shout out to the Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey brand for producing a dope ass art exhibition last week at MG Manufacturing. Art, Beats and Lyrics exhibit featured the works of several artists including Frank Morrison, Aniekan Udofia, Pash Lima and Kaya Faery among others. AB+L’s curator Dubelyoo gave media and press a special tour of the exhibit and the inspiration behind some of the artists.

Spelman Grad Kashawndra Wilson Inspires Auburn-Gresham Kids to Pursue Careers in STEM

By Kimberly De Guzman Education Post Since she was 9 years old, Kashawndra Wilson had her career all planned. She would attend Spelman College, study biology and become a pediatric cardiologist. Fast forward about a decade, and Wilson is 2 for 3.

Spelman? Check.

Biology major? Check.

But she never became a doctor. Instead, she’s changing kids’ lives in a different way—through education.

Wilson is the principal of Hansberry College Prep, a member of the Noble Network of Charter Schools located in Chicago’s Auburn-Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. Currently, more than 700 students attend Hansberry, 97 percent of whom are African American.

Some students choose Hansberry because they know it has the proper resources to help them get to college.

Others are attracted to the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Either way, these kids have big dreams. And Wilson has developed a school powerfully positioned to shape their futures.

Recently, Wilson sat down to talk about how she shifted her career focus from medicine to teaching, her commitment to great schools of all kinds and her passion for helping young people of color pursue STEM careers.

How did you decide to become a teacher?

“When it came time for the MCAT [Medical College Admission Test] everyone was telling me how difficult it was,” she says. “I said, ‘Let me take a year off and do something that’s easy where I can still remember my [science] content.’ I came into teaching with that thought.”

Soon afterwards, Wilson was accepted to the Inner City Teaching Corps (ICTC) and spent the next two years teaching science at a Catholic high school in Chicago www.chicagodefender.com

while earning a master’s in secondary education from Northwestern University. The experience sparked her curiosity and determination to stick with teaching for the long haul.

“I realized I felt a calling to it,” she says. “I loved it, I loved my kids, and I was good at it.”

Why Noble? And what are your thoughts on the district-run vs. charter school debate?

When Wilson decided to teach somewhere new after wrapping up her Catholic school experience, she just wanted to find a school that was “about what was best for kids.”

She didn’t know anything about Noble until she met representatives at a school fair.

“I went home and researched and I’m seeing how they’re doing all these great things in the city of Chicago for our kids. So I was like this is the place I need to be.”

Of course, it wasn’t easy. During the subsequent “crazy” application and interview process, Wilson remembers thinking they’d never hire her. “But I got a call,” she says.

“And I’ve been here—next year will be my eighth year.”

Wilson says she’s not interested in debating the merits of charters versus other types of schools. “I’m a person who believes in quality education for our kids— specifically, kids of color, kids who come from the background I come from.”

What was your journey like, transitioning from teacher to principal?

Wilson started her Noble journey as the founding 10th-grade chemistry teacher at Bulls College Prep on Chicago’s West Side.

“I didn’t know anything about standards-based teaching,” she says. “I was very nervous.”

She pushed herself to succeed and it paid off.

“Fortunately, since I’ve been at Noble, I’ve been able to have some of the top science results in the network,”

she says. “What’s more important is I’ve been able to do that while building a culture of love and accountability.”

Wilson became a busy bee while at Bulls, teaching science for two years. Soon, she wanted to pursue leadership roles so she could be a champion for students’ success. She spent a year helping other teachers improve their instruction before taking on the dual roles of 11thgrade biology teacher and freshman dean of students.

Late in 2016, she started as principal of Hansberry.

Wilson believes the culture of love and accountability she built as a teacher gave her the opportunity to do the work she does today as a principal.

“I get results for kids because I believe in high expectations,” she says. “But I believe we can do it by loving on our kids and showing them what they truly can do, even though they might think it’s impossible.”

Why is it important for you to expose kids of color to STEM careers and interests?

“I believe in mirrors and windows,” she says. “It’s so incredibly important for our kids to see people who look like them—who’ve had the experience of their pasts—and go off and do great things.”

As a woman of color, Wilson also believes in the importance of encouraging these kids of color to aspire for careers related to math, technology and science—just like how she was motivated to pursue biology during her youth.

“Being able to get our kids invested in science, and excited about the way in which the world works—and I’m doing it as a woman of color—it’s just powerful imagery for them. They can buy into it because it’s a little bit more authentic for them.”

What A Difference A Year Makes #TheBIGS takes a look at the differences between the 2016 WS Champ Cubs and the 2017 squad that is looking to capture last year’s magic.

By Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS The quest for back-to-back “ships” is here, however, the road to a second one has been a bit more challenging. After 108 years, the Cubs finally got the job done and the Commissioner’s Trophy was back on the North Side. This year they look to be the first team to win two in a row since the 1998-1999 Yankees. Below we take a look at 3 differences in this 2017 squad versus last year’s Championship team.

The Arms In 2016, 4 of the 5 pitchers in the Cubs starting rotation made 30 starts. (Lester 32, Arrieta 31, Hendricks 30, Hammel 30, Lackey 29) Baseball purists know that the key to a successful season and a chance at a championship relies heavily on starting pitching and the ability for starters to go deep into games. The starting 5 made 152 starts and combined for 79 wins while all of their ERA’s were below 4.00. It kept the bullpen intact for much of the season and Joe Maddon was able to line up Carl Edwards Jr, Justin Grimm, Trevor Cahill, Hector Rondon, Pedro Strop, Travis Wood and Mike Montgomery accordingly with flamethrower Aroldis Chapman to close games. Ultimately Chapman wasn’t happy with the way he was used, but the overall goal was accomplished and now he’s back in NY looking for a return trip to the World Series with the Yankees.

In 2017, 3 of the 6 pitchers in the rotation made 30 starts. (Lester 32, Arrieta 30, Lackey 30, Hendricks 24, Quintana 14, Montgomery 14) They combined for 60 wins (almost 20 less than last year’s starting crop) and have been a bit shaky for most of the season until they found a late groove in the last 1/4 of the year. of 4.33 and 4.59 respectively while the 2016 NL Pitcher Of The Year Hendricks ERA jumped almost 1 run from his previous year.

Even though they finished the year as the 2nd best bullpen in the National League, relief pitching has been the talk most of the season. Last year’s World Series Game 7 standouts Montgomery and Edwards Jr have had their share of troubles late in the season. If the Cubs are to defend the title, these 2 will have to find their groove because Joe Maddon will continue to go down that road. Hector Rondon can’t be counted on. Pedro Strop and Bran Duensing are legitimate when throwing strikes and Wade Davis saved all 3 games of the NLDS so we know his value. Last but definitely not least...John Lackey is not feeling coming out of the bullpen one bit and it was written all over his last appearance as Justin Turner hit a walk off HR to give the LA Dodgers a 4-1 win and 2-0 lead over the Cubs in the NLCS. Health Is Wealth Kyle Schwarber was the only Cub who saw serious time on the disabled list in the 2016 campaign with torn ligaments in his left knee. Ben Zobrist, Addison Russell, Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester, Willson Contreras and Koji Uehara have all missed significant time this year.

No Cure For Championship Hangover The World Series hangover is real...as most teams like to admit years later. The Cubs are no different. They went into the All-Star break 43-45 then turned it around in the 2nd half to go 4925 and finish 6 games ahead of the 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers. Overcoming adversity is a gene that most championship clubs have. It’s an uphill battle from here and the guys will have to dig deep down inside if they want to do it again.

Hitting .172 as a team is not going to get it done!

The 2016 Chicago Bulls season was more like a drama-filled reality television show called “Chicago Bulls High” than an NBA basketball squad.

Starring Butler, Wade and Rondo, as the “Three Alphas,” fans were fed hope of one last push at a playoff run, but you’d be hard pressed to recall a big win on the court. Instead, who could forget how Jimmy used to bully Fred Hoiberg for not coaching hard enough? The tension between Dwayne Wade and the young players on the team made for great tweets but did little to change their reputation around the NBA as being ground zero for “Basketball Hell.”

Rajon Rondo’s infamous “Instagram post heard around the world” was a helluva plot twist, but in the end he too would be a casualty of the ineptitude of “GarPax”- the villains of “Chicago Bulls High.”

Fast forward a year and the “Three Alphas” are no more. The Bulls passed on bringing back Rondo, traded Jimmy Butler back to his rightful owner (Thibs...who else?) and cashed out Wade to the tune of $18 million so he could go play with his buddy in Cleveland.

The dreaded “red button” was pushed and the decision was made to put all plans of “winning now” on hold to rebuild for the future. Enter newcomers Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and a familiar face in Justin Holiday, the Bulls are gearing up for the 2017 season by rallying fans to “Run With Us”-- appropriate given the fact that most fans simply want to run away from the Bulls this year. In the spirit of a fresh start, I’m not here to pile dirt onto the Bulls’ grave. Let’s take a look at some of the potential bright spots of what is sure to be a dim year for the residents of the “Madhouse On Madison.”

Fred, you’re the Captain Now...

No longer does Fred Hoiberg have to look over his shoulder wondering if Jimmy Butler approves of his coaching style or decisions.

Still relatively inexperienced as a head coach in the NBA, it’s fair to say Fred has yet to get a fair shake.

Hyped up as a coach that would bring an uptempo style to Chicago, he was equipped with a roster full of slow, athletically challenged players that never fit the “younger and more athletic” talk that GarPax tried to

feed us after they shipped D. Rose to the Knicks. Leading a squad full of young players with something to prove and Zach LaVine, even with him returning from an ACL injury, means Fred finally has a chance to run his show. If he can get his guys to buy in early and commit to playing hard every night, the Bulls could at least be watchable this year and that would be a huge positive for the organization. In other words, Fred, you’re the Captain now.

Zach LaVine, the centerpiece…

The Bulls have decided to put their hopes and dreams into a young, freakishly athletic guard that is nursing his way back from an ACL injury. Sure we’ve heard that before...but you’d be tweaking if you’re not willing to admit that if there’s any reason to be excited about this Bulls season, it’s the return of Zach LaVine. All eyes will be on him as the early questions will be centered around if he’s lost any of the athleticism that put him on the cusp of being must-see TV during his time in Minnesota with the TWolves. After claiming that his vertical is higher than ever at Media Day last month, fans have a player to latch on to during the rebuild that is sure to provide the ooo’s and ahhh’s they are desperately craving.

“Running WIth Zach” One of the biggest questions surrounding the Bulls once Zach LaVine finally hits the hardwood is who will be his sidekick or sidekicks. The Bulls will surely have their options to choose from. Will it be familiar face Justin Holiday who makes his return to the Madhouse after being thrown into the D. Rose trade to the Knicks a couple seasons ago? He’s lit it up in the preseason and looks to be in store for a good year. Will it be his fellow ex-Timberwolves teammate Kris Dunn, who’s nursing his way back from his own hand injury? The 2nd year point guard is looking to prove that he belongs after a lackluster rookie campaign. What about the rook? Lauri Markkanen, the Finnish sensation has only played a couple of preseason games but has showed flashes of having a few offensive tricks up his sleeve. He could provide an outside threat that Hoiberg is going to need and has the size to make you keep your eyes on him. Let’s chill on branding him the next Dirk but Lauri will surely get his opportunity to shine sooner than later.
