CITY NEWS Com Ed Customers To Receive Refund Every now and then, there is good news in the mail. And this month, Com Ed customers can expect to see a credit on their monthly bills. The average ComEd residential customer will see a credit in the amount of about $14 on their October monthly bill, according to Com Ed. The refund comes as a result of ComEd’s efforts to implement the new Energy Efficiency funding mechanism established by the historic Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA). The Olive Branch Mission Appointments First Black CEO The Olive Branch Mission, the oldest homeless services organization in Chicago, recently appointed its first African American CEO, La Forice Nealy. Nealy has more than 27 years of nonprofit organizational experience. Throughout his career at the American Red Cross, he has worked in various areas. However, he found his niche in Disaster Services and excelled in multiple positions, including Disaster Services Specialist and Managing Director of Disaster Services in the Greater Chicago area. He was also Michigan Regional CEO. The Mission was established in 1867 by Rachel Bradley, a member of the Free Methodist Church, for the purpose of serving the poor, comforting the hurting and offering help to those desiring freedom from alcoholism, prostitution, and the like—thereby imparting the life transforming La Forice Nealy love and power of Jesus Christ. The organization also assisted individuals and families who were a part of The Great Migration. The Olive Branch Mission is located on Chicago’s South Side and serves Englewood, West Englewood and Roseland communities.

Bernal Smith, Publisher of The New Tri-State Defender, Dies at 45 Bernal Smith, president and publisher of The New Tri-State Defender, died at age 45 in his home this week. The cause of his death is currently unclear. Smith took over the Tri-State Defender as publisher in 2010, and in 2013, he engineered the Tri-State Defender’s move to Memphis, as well the paper’s revamp, which included changing its format and layout, and targeting younger audiences. The Tri-State Defender was once a part of Real Times Media, the publisher of the Chicago Defender. In addition to working with the Tri-State Defender, Smith was extremely active within his community. He consistently talked on news station Local 24 to discuss community issues, served as President of 100 Black Men of Memphis (a group that mentors Black youth), and was the Vice President of the Greater Memphis Chamber, an organization that supports businesses attempting to operate out of Memphis. In a statement on Twitter, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said Smith was, “a tireless advocate for economic and social justice in Memphis … I greatly respected his voice in our city. Our prayers are with his family.” Smith graduated from Rhodes College with a B.A. in Business Administration and Management, and received his MBA in International Business/Trade/Commerce from Union College in 2003. www.chicagodefender.com

COVER STORY

Mental Illness and the need to foster understanding, not stigma As the leaves turn colors and fall to the ground, October is also known as a month we raise awareness about several diseases, including Breast Cancer, Mental Illness, Dental Hygiene, and so many other important causes. We’ve highlighted several of these causes throughout this month in the Defender and wanted to end the month with a general round-up of stories: Mental Illness and the Need to Foster Understanding, Not Stigma; Dental Health and You; and What Can You Do To Improve Your Health Now. We hope these stories help you take better care of yourself and others—‘cause when we know better, we can all do better (to paraphrase the legendary Maya Angelou). By Diana Semmelhack, PsyD, ABPP Professor, Midwestern University What is mental illness? This is a question that is not well understood in America. Mental illness is defined as a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern of behavior that occurs in an individual which can be grossly debilitating. Chronic mental illness such as Diana Semmelhack schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, schizoaffective and major depression disorder can impact an individual’s ability to function at a normal level throughout his/ her lifetime. Today, the population of severely mentally ill adults residing in long-term care facilities in the United States is growing (National Center for Health Care Statistics, 2014). With one out of four individuals suffering from a severe mental illness (SMI) and 14.5 million Americans being disabled as a result of SMI, the costs are staggering—billions of dollars in disability payments are being spent annually. Between 40-80 percent of these institutionalized individuals have untreated severe trauma histories. Contrary to popular belief, gaining access to their creative selves benefits severely mentally ill, institutionalized adults. There are many reasons why creativity and positive communication are important in making the right healing environment. Winnicott (1971) suggests that creativity is the root of being, an expression of the self. He states that “it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self (p. 54).” Furthermore, many of the most innovative ideas that have shaped society have come from the minds of individuals considered to be mentally ill. Artists, writers and thinkers such as Vincent Van Gogh, Virginia Woolf, Abraham www.chicagodefender.com

Lincoln and Winston Churchill have been deemed by society to be “mentally ill” (A. Adkins—NAMI, personal communication, February 15, 2017). Many people today diagnosed with SMI are highly creative individuals with few treatment options other than medication management (NAMI, 2007), homelessness, jail or worse. Rosenhan (1973) suggests that in many cases institutionalization has a depersonalizing effect. Severely mentally ill, institutionalized individuals are frequently seen as being “sick,” “crazy” or “insane.” Their sense of themselves as “artists,” “writers,” “scientists,” “musicians,” etc. can be quickly lost. Treatment is needed to help these people regain their sense of themselves as creative individuals. SMI individuals are stigmatized in our society. Stigma involves labeling, discriminating against and stereotyping individuals who bear this label. Negative stigma assumes that the person with a mental illness has a character flaw. He/she is seen as having negative qualities such as being weak, dishonest, violent, out of control, etc. The stigma of mental illness in our culture contributes to keeping over a third of those stricken with these diseases from seeking help. Stigma permeates all strata of society from mental health providers to those consumers who internalize the stigma. Internalized stigma occurs when individuals with mental illness believe the negative views of themselves held by others. Self-stigma limits the quality of life-- makes the person less likely to be hired, to buy a house or to be seen as a fully functioning human being. Stigma is best captured in the excerpt from a poem by Debbie Sesula, a woman diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, titled You and Me: If you’re overly excited You’re happy If I’m overly excited I’m manic. If you imagine the phone ringing You’re stressed out If I imagine the phone ringing I’m psychotic. If you’re crying and sleeping all day You’re sad and need time out If I’m crying and sleeping all day I’m depressed and need to get up. If you’re afraid to leave your house at night You’re cautious If I’m afraid to leave my house at night I’m paranoid. If you speak your mind and express your opinions You’re assertive If I speak my mind and express my opinions continued on page 4

What Can You Do To Improve Dental Health and You Your Health Today By Kerris Guinn Defender Contributing Writer

By Katara Washington Patton Defender Senior Editor With all of the focus on being aware of our health, it all can just be overwhelming. But, the Defender is here to help. The Defender spoke with experts in several different fields about ways people can take better care of themselves now. By following the advice of our team of experts, you can adopt a healthier lifestyle--one step at a time. Physically Dr. Renee Matthews of Ask Dr. Renee (askdrrenee.info) shared 5 things those looking to be healthier can incorporate into their daily lives today. Drinking water was top on her list; she suggested forgoing the sugary beverages. Matthews also suggested those seeking to be healthier get 30 minutes of cardio exercise each day. “That can be three 10-minute walks or three 10-minute dance breaks,” Matthews said. Just get in the 30 minutes. She also suggested eating more real food— “food that comes from an animal or the ground.” Avoid foods that have been processed. Along with eating the real food, Matthews said eating more color can help too (that means the fruit and vegetables). And her final suggestion on maintaining physical health is to eat several small meals instead of large meals. This can help with metabolism and digestion. Siddiqu Muhammad, “the” personal trainer and author of two books on getting fit, added that people wanting to be healthier need to begin by “realizing the importance. I know it comes off as a cliché, but it is legitimate…” He said each person has to make up in his or her mind that they are going to do better and be better before change will occur. He said finding an accountability partner can keep people on track. “If you want to commit to healthier living, who do you have to go down this road with?” And one other way to jump start your exer-

I’m aggressive. If you talk to strangers You’re being friendly If I talk to strangers I’m being inappropriate. For all of the above you’re not told to take a Pill or are hospitalized, but I am! Social Interactions Underlying this column is the conclusion that: the social interactions of people diagnosed with severe mental illness plays a fundamental role in their mental health and treatment—ultimately facilitating their capacity to be creative human beings. Psychotropic medication, it is true, is important in the treatment of severe mental illness. However, pills are not enough to recover from the devastation of a psychotic break and the trauma that frequently precedes it. As a parallel, a person cannot recover from the death of her entire family in the Holocaust simply by tak-

Keeping a set of pearly whites is not just attractive, but it can also help you maintain your overall health in the long run. According to the Mayo Clinic, your mouth is full of bacteria, most of which is harmless and can be kept at bay with regular brushing and flossing. But without proper oral hygiene, oral infections, tooth decay and gum disease can occur. It’s also important to maintain regular visits to the dentist because the health of a person’s mouth is considered to be a good reflection of his/ her overall health. According to Delta Dental, diseases such as oral cancer, diabetes and pancreatic cancer all show early manifestations in a person’s mouth. Swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and gum problems are all signs that a dentist can pick up on and use to discern whether or not a bigger problem is at hand. Although it is suggested by some studies that periodontitis, or gum disease, can contribute to heart disease, the American Heart Association insists that there isn’t enough information currently available to confirm those beliefs. While periodontitis can create risk factors that can negatively impact the health of the mouth, blood vessels and heart of someone who has the disease, it is inconclusive whether or not periodontitis can cause or help prevent heart disease. Here are some tips on how to maintain proper oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day. Maintaining the health of your teeth will allow you to chew through your favorite foods and smile easily at your loved ones well after retirement. Brushing your teeth twice a day-once in the morning or afternoon and once before going to bed-- will help reduce the plaque, or thin sticky film

ing an anti-depressant. The social interaction surrounding a person can facilitate recovery, or play a major role in maintaining her mental illness. There are organizations available to help mentally ill people and their families that promote the social interaction dynamics just mentioned. The largest grass roots organization helping people with SMI in the USA is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). NAMI (an organization currently flourishing in Chicagoland) provides free support to people with mental illness and their families. Through individual advisement and free group participation in such programs as Peer to Peer and Family to Family, NAMI is on the front lines of helping individuals to get their mental healthcare needs met. Another example of a frontline organization in Chicagoland is Lydia HealthCare, who in its 30-year history has helped virtually thousands of people with mental illness re-integrate into society. The focus at Lydia is on person centered care in an integrative health setting. Today, Lydia Healthcare’s population consists of a highly diverse group of severely mentally ill adults. of bacteria constantly growing on your teeth. The persistent reduction of plaque, by brushing your teeth, will help maintain the strength and integrity of your teeth for years to come. Flossing Plaque can cause a maelstrom of problems especially when it’s not regularly removed from your mouth. If plaque is stuck in the crevices of your teeth, it can turn into tartar. Tartar when formed on the gumline can lead to irritation to your gums; if the irritation is allowed to persist, then gum disease can occur. Don’t allow the plaque in between your teeth to fester, clean it out by flossing regularly or at least once a day. You’ll thank yourself later. Regular professional cleaning by a dentist Yes, this step may require more time and money on your end (although many insurance plans cover regular cleanings), but it’s worth it. Professional cleaning by a dentist can help clean up any plaque or tartar buildup that you’ve been missing in your daily cleaning. Not only that but X-rays performed by dentists can help detect any problems with your teeth and gums before it becomes advanced. Here’s a short list of dentists in the Chicago area you may want to consider: Dr. Kyra D. Barnes, DDS Located: 8245 S King Dr., Chicago, IL 60619. Griffin Orthodontics Located: 10019 S. Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 Smith & Smith Smile Studio Located: 1457 E Hyde Park Blvd, Chicago, IL 60615 So, make an appointment today and keep your smile as bright as your future.

412 consumers, it provides 24-hour care administered by qualified, licensed professionals. Lydia recognizes both the uniqueness of behavioral care and the potential each consumer possesses. At Lydia we understand you have questions and need answers. With a training program of 12 doctoral graduate students in clinical psychology from Midwestern University and a top-quality staff, Lydia is cutting edge in meeting the needs of this underserved population. We hope that mental health professionals and other interested parties will act like NAMI and Lydia Healthcare and reflect on the tremendous importance of growth promoting communication in the lives of the “severely mentally ill” individuals who tend to be alienated from our society. We need to bust stigma and recognize that individuals with mental illness like any other disease deserve treatment and not stigma. A person-centered focus that makes transformation and mental health happen is hopeful and helpful. Ignorance is certainly the root of misunderstanding and something we need to address first hand when it comes to mental illness. Creativity, empathy and unconditional positive regard are the seeds of mental health. www.chicagodefender.com

Former COPA Chief Sharon Fairley Runs For Illinois Attorney General By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Since the announcement of Lisa Madigan not seeking another term as Illinois Attorney General, the pool of candidates has stepped forward for the seat. Four candidates have announced their bid—Republican endorsed Ericka Harold, Democratic State Senator Kwame Raoul, ex-CPS board member Jesse Ruiz and former COPA Chief Sharon Fairley. Sharon Fairley is a very familiar face in the criminal justice system as a former federal prosecutor and as an Assistant Attorney General for nine years working under the leadership of both U.S. General Attorney Eric Holder and thereafter, Loretta Lynch. She joined City of Chicago working in the Office of the Inspector General as First Deputy Inspector General and General Counsel. But her most challenging job would come after the court ordered release of the Laquan McDonald police dashcam, which showed the 17-year-old shot 16 times by a Chicago police officer. In December 2015, Mayor Rahm Emanuel appointed Fairley as the Chief Administrator of the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA), which would thrust her in the spotlight –leading the charge for police accountability and reform. A New Chapter In Police Accountability Working with several community organizations and addressing the problems that have embedded a long history of mistrust between the Chicago Police Department and communities of color—the City Council established an ordinance to form a new agency: Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). As the Chief Administrator of COPA, Fairley helped launch the agency staffed with more than 120 employees this September. A month later, she resigned from her position at COPA under the speculation of making a bid for Attorney General. She explained, “The first thing to be clear about is that those were two completely separate decisions. Both were really very difficult, as you might imagine. I’m so proud of the work that has went into creating COPA. I cannot be more grateful for having had the opportunity to be able to create the division for that organization, to have the resources to actually make that vision come to life. It was a tremendous amount of work, but it was also very exciting. I believe the agency is poised to do great work,” said Fairley. Under the agency, she believes in order to build public trust there has to be transparency of the police department across the board. “COPA is only one part of the system. Police accountability is much more than the oversight agency. Police accountability must be backed into the whole process to how officers are recruited, to how they are trained, to policies that govern how they interact with communities, to how well they’re supervised, to how they are evaluated,” she said. “Then you get to the point to how are they disciplined and that’s where COPA plays a part.” “This is an organization [CPD] of 12,000 individuals. They’re not all bad. But there is a culture that has developed over time and it’s not possible to change a culture of an organization that large overnight. What do you do in the interim? You have to be consistent in enforcing the rules. That’s what we try, that’s what I tried to do. Where there was evidence of people being untruthful, that code of silence, we would call it out and enforce the rules about it. That’s what is really important.” Finding Her Way A native of Silver Springs, Md., Fairley grew up with a love for mathematics. Both parents were educators— her mom worked as a school administrator in Montgomery County and her father worked at the Department of Health and Education. He was part of the team who travwww.chicagodefender.com

Sharon Fairley eled around the country helping to integrate schools. But it was from her grandmother, Fairley credits her analytical skills. “My father’s mother, my grandmother, graduated from Oberlin College in 1923 with a degree in statistics. Imagine being an African-American woman in 1923, studying mathematical discipline. She was a trailblazer and she was amazing.” Fairley attended Princeton University where she majored in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She recalls her experience attending the Ivy League school. “I had a great experience while I was there; I received an academic scholarship from General Motors in Dayton, Ohio, while I was in college. At the same time, I was a creative person. I love to sing,” Fairley said. “When I was in college, I did a lot of musical theater. There’s a theater at Princeton called McCarthy Theatre that was my home away from home. I spent a lot of time there.” Fueling her love for the great American musicals, it was a healthy way of creatively expressing herself aside from her engineering classes. After earning her B.A. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton, she obtained her M.B.A. degree in Marketing from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. She immediately moved to New York City where she spent 19 years working in advertising and marketing. As a senior executive, she was doing well in her professional career but felt there was more she could do—to give back. After repeatedly contemplating about law school, she relocated to Chicago and enrolled at the University of Chicago Law School, earning her J.D. in 2006. “When I came out of law school, Lisa Madigan gave me my first job. I was an assistant Attorney General working in criminal appeals at the Attorney General office. It was a wonderful experience. That’s how I became a lawyer working in that office. I learned how to write, I learned how

to analyze cases. I appreciate her giving me that opportunity.” It was a calling she felt both intrigued and inspired by, being a part of the process and working inside the system. A year later Fairley joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. “Prosecutors have a tremendous amount of discretion at what they do. I really felt it was important to work for justice by being inside the system. I wanted to be the one who was exercising that judgement. I wanted to be the one who’s deciding to charge and with what,” she said. “I wanted to make the recommendations about sentencing because I knew that I could have influence over the process.” Fighting Trump Policies In this new chapter of her life, she believes there is more work for her to accomplish as an officer of the court because of what is at stake. “I believe that Lisa has done a tremendous job. She has gained the trust of the community that she serves and rightly so. We are in a very different place than when she took over the office. Today, these positions [State’s Attorney General] are so incredibly important because they do serve as the first line of defense against the aggressive and regressive policies of the Trump administration.” The mother of two adults, Fairley has worked on cases that have involved offenders preying on the vulnerabilities of seniors in mortgage fraud along with narcotics and firearms. What can we expect her to bring to the office of Attorney General if she is elected? “We need somebody in that role who can stand firm against those things. They always say, ‘the best defense is a good offense’ so how can you use the power of the law to actually push back and protect the citizens of Illinois from these things. Many of these things are really personal to me.”

Chicago Defender: Election 2018

Willie Preston

Incumbent State Rep. Mary Flowers is running against newcomer, Willie Preston, for the Illinois state representative seat for the 31st district of Illinois in the 2018 Illinois primary election. By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The upcoming primary elections of 2018 in the state of Illinois are quickly approaching with several hotly contested elections directly impacting various neighborhoods within Chicagoland’s African-American community. With that in mind, the Defender will provide race updates as they come in. This week, the Defender will focus on the race between incumbent State Rep. Mary Flowers (Dist. 31), who has been in office for more than 30 years, and her challenger, Willie Preston. The 31st district of Illinois encompasses portions of Chicago’s Englewood, West Englewood neighborhoods, Oak Lawn, Chicago Ridge, Palos Hills, and other nearby communities. State Rep. Mary Flowers Flowers told the Defender it’s been “her pleasure” to serve her constituency for the past 33 years. As a state representative, Flowers is the current chairperson for the health care availability access committee. She also serves on the committees for restorative justice; museums, arts & cultural enhancement; higher education; human services; accountability & administrative review; and health & healthcare disparities. Throughout the 30-minute interview, she recalled how she passed legislation over her tenure like protections against discrimination for pregnant mothers in the workplace and how she was one of the first voices to propose Chicago police sensitivity training more than a decade ago. She said looking towards the future, she wants to insure all Illinois residents have access to healthcare and not just health insurance. “There’s a multitude of things that I have worked on and there’s a multitude of things I will continue to work

on,” said Flowers. “I do love my job and I’m very proud of the things I’ve done, and I want to do greater things.” Juggling priorities and day-to-day needs are just part of the job, according to Flowers. She did specify, however, what some of her major initiatives moving forward would be. “My priorities are to do the best that I can to make sure that we have revenues here in the state of Illinois,” said Flowers. “Right now, my top priorities are job creation, transaction tax by way of the bank, and to make sure that everyone in the state of Illinois has access to health care, not access to insurance, but access to health care.” Flowers said she would not directly respond to any comments made by Preston as he is not yet officially on the ballot. When asked about term limits or being out of touch with her community, Flowers responded by stating her constituents ultimately make the final call. “If the people don’t want me back in office, they’ve had the opportunity not one time or two times but several times over the 30 some odd years [to not re-elect me],” said Flowers. “It’s up to the people to decide.” Willie Preston Willie Preston, 32, is a Chicago native with several ties to the Englewood community, who has thrown his hat into the ring for this election cycle. Before stepping down to focus on the election, he was formerly an organizer for Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation (SOUL), whose mission is to assist low-income people of color in the Chicago Southland to build power, then subsequently leverage that power to fight for their own interest and liberation, according to its website. Preston told the Defender he attended Chicago State University before being expelled in 2015 over a dispute

involving students’ rights and administrative negligence. “I was centrally engaged with the administration in the struggle on behalf of the students as a student leader and as a result of winning an election for board trustees which governs the university,” said Preston. “I much rather focus on my time at Chicago State where I learned about politics and how to bridge together on issues.” Preston said he decided to run for office because he wanted to see a new leadership serve his community. “Many politicians in the city, county and even at the state level, many of them have been in office since before I was born, and when you look at that reality and when you look at the conditions in neighborhoods like Englewood, Auburn Gresham, you see the results are disastrous,” said Preston. Preston said when he looks down 79th street, he does not see enough businesses (or even a place to get a cup of coffee) and he intends to change those dynamics once in office. He said African Americans working on state projects, contracts and more is a priority of his. He called it “atrocious” that according to his research African Americans are doing less than one percent of the business with the state of Illinois. He said Democratic Party “boss leaders” have not made that issue a priority. “The Black Caucus, our largest caucus in Springfield, you can’t pass gas without them but we continue to pass budgets allocating large portions of the state’s money to our state agencies, as we should, but we do it without any mandates on the contract allocations going to Black firms,” said Preston. “Springfield politicians largely just go along to get along, and that’s what I’m seeing in my district right now and I want to work to change it.” Beyond his community service with SOUL, Preston said he was elected to serve as a local school counselor for two years at Scott Joplin Elementary School, 7927 S. Honore St. He said that experience really gave him a better insight into how he might effect change. He called Chicago Public Schools a “poster child for corruption.” Preston responded when asked about how he would serve communities outside of Chicago as state representative by stating, “I think they will appreciate a state representative who will stand up to any political office from the state and who’s going to be honest.” www.chicagodefender.com

A Regal Dilemma: What’s Going On At The Old Theater By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer In a sudden turn of events, the owner of the Avalon Regal Theater (ART), 1645 E. 79th St., formerly known as The Regal Theater, cancelled two open house events at the theater due to concerns over safety and legal precedent raised by Alderman Michelle Harris (8th Ward). The Defender recently reported that Jerald Gary, owner of the ART, intended to welcome visitors to the historical landmark with the goal of increasing awareness for the ART’s plan to crowdfund the purchase of state-of-the-art hologram projection equipment, which would make the theater a one-of-a-kind destination with both hologram and live performances. Additionally, Gary wanted the ART to provide community residents with the opportunity to invest in the building as well as participate in the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s (CAF) Open House Chicago (OHC). The OHC for one week in October celebrates the city’s great architectural structures at more than 200 participating locations citywide. He said this year would have been the fourth consecutive year in which the ART participated. He said the CAF reached out to him in 2014 when he first purchased the ART. And yet, none of those events took place. Gary said he understands the decision was made at the city’s discretion. “We did not host the open house event at the direction of the city,” said Gary. “The outside doors were locked and we tried to the best of our ability to make sure that people were not congregating in front of the property.” Alderman Harris paints a slightly different picture of the events leading up to the OHC cancellation. She said she connected Gary with the proper channels within city government he would need to re-open the ART properly over a year ago. She said at that time a court order was issued to him stating the building was to remain vacant because of multiple building code violations. She noted that she and Gary met with the building code commissioner, the City of Chicago’s director of historic landmarks, building inspectors, and others over a year ago. Yet, Gary has yet to prove he has the financial resources to bring the building up to code, according to Harris. “From today to a year ago, Mr. Gary has not done a single thing to take care of his code violations,” said Harris. “The law states that if you have code violations and the judge says that the building must remain vacant, then nobody can override that but another judge so he has to go to a judge to get all of that rescinded.” Harris said when she learned that a tour of the ART was planned she called Gary to remind him that it was unlawful for him to proceed. She said until recently she had no intentions of releasing the details of what transpired with Gary and the ART publically; however, she has to be responsible for what she allows to transpire within

Jerald Gary her ward. “Because I did not want to publically kick Mr. Gary, I have done everything I can not to kick him on this and to make him look bad as a Black man,” said Harris. “He has an obligation to abide by the law. No one is above the law. Mr. Gary has put himself above the law in that he has no respect for the law, and because he has no respect for the law, I have to step in because it is my obligation to keep people safe when people don’t want to follow the law.” Gary said he’s aware of the various code violations the ART needs to address, however, that has not stopped him from hosting events in the past. He wondered aloud if other vacant OHC locations on the South Side need court permission to showcase their spaces like he did. “There have been multiple code violations on the property before I acquired it and so, of course, as the owner the responsibility to correct those code violations falls on me,” said Gary. “With that said, over the past four years of my ownership I have been unaware of any court order that has prevented anyone from being in the building. Obviously, without a license we cannot sell anything in the property, which is what we have not been doing. We’ve only had events.” Gary said the alderman’s office has always been aware of the events he’s held at the ART. He said last summer he allowed a “major film set” inside the ART for a commercial shoot to which he invited Harris with a personal invitation. He said he’s had multiple conversations with the alderman’s office and has appeared at building court, however, he declined to comment as to the nature of the conversations. “I do not feel comfortable discussing how the alderman acted on the last phone call I had with her last week because it is embarrassing to her character and I would be disparaging her,” said Gary. In response to public outcry on social media as well and other venues, Harris said she feels “deeply saddened” by the community as she feels as though many have not done “their due diligence” on the issues. “I’m disheartened by the whole discourse that I’m the one making sure that life does not work for him,” said Harris.

University of Chicago’s Grad Students Look to Unionize

A few dozen University of Chicago graduate students posed for a picture in front of the school’s administration building during a rally in support of forming a graduate student union. By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Graduate students at the University of Chicago assembled, rallied, and voted in favor of being officially recognized as a fully functioning on-campus union, a process that’s been more than a year in the making. The journey to become a union began in May when UC graduate employees filed authorization cards with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to hold a formal union recognition election, according to a press release disseminated by Graduate Students United (GSU). GSU is an independent organization of graduate students at the University of Chicago that has advocated for better health care, wages, and work and study policies since 2007. There is a legal precedent for graduate students to unionize. The NLRB ruled in 2016 that students who work as researchers and teaching assistants at private universities can form a union, according to a The New York Times report. Chaz Lee, a GSU member and graduate student in the college of music since 2011, said he’s been working with GSU for more than a year. He said support to unionize has steadily grown amongst the 2,200 graduate student body since he joined GSU. “We firmly believe that grad employees are the backbone of the university, and as grad teachers and researchers, we do a lot of work on this campus and deserve a seat at the table when decisions are made that affect not only our lives but the lives of our students and our community,” said Lee. Lee said once formed the union members intend to meet to determine what their next steps and priorities will be moving forward. He identified health care services, payroll, and housing among other issues as their primary issues. He said GSU has strong on-campus support from graduate students, faculty, undergraduate students, as well as support from U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (ILD), U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (IL -D), Senator Bernie Sanders (VT-I), among others. “We really haven’t had any legal recourse to address these issues effectively, which is why we have been camwww.chicagodefender.com

paigning for a strong collective voice,” said Lee. Daniela Palmer, a sixth year graduate student majoring in evolutionary biology at UC and a GSU member, said while in service of UC she has taken courses, conducted experiments, analyzed data, written for multiple publications, taken care of animals on campus related to her research, and has worked to increase the diversity of students on campus. She explained the potential impact Daniela Palmer of the union on the university and its students. “[The union is] really important to me because it’s really the best way for students to really have a say in the decisions on campus life,” said Palmer. “It’s a way we can work together and democratically decide what works and what doesn’t work for graduate students and look to the future and take part in designing the academic environment and work environment that we would like to be a part of.” Palmer explained attempts were made to partner with the UC administration in the weeks leading up to the election and they were largely ignored. However, she said she does not anticipate negotiations will eventually lead to a strike. “We did give the [administration] the opportunity to voluntarily recognize us when we filed our cards in the spring for our current election but that’s really been the only direct approach and they did not want to voluntarily recognize us,” said Palmer. Marielle Sainvilus, Director of Public Affairs, University of Chicago Communications issued this statement to the Defender: “Graduate education is at the core of the University’s mission in research and education, and the goal of graduate education is to ensure that students can reach their fullest potential for scholarship and discovery in their chosen fields. These values have guided the University’s decision to pursue the NLRB process. The National La-

bor Relations Board (NLRB) has a long history of recognizing that graduate assistants are foremost students and not employees under federal labor law. The University of Chicago has joined several other universities in asking the Board to revisit its recent reversal of position on this question, and our request is pending. We continue to have concerns about the impact of a graduate student union on the University’s mission of creating and imparting knowledge through direct mentorship, teaching and individually guided research and writing. “We respect that reasonable people can come to different conclusions on the issue of graduate student unionization. Regardless of the outcome of the legal process, we will continue to support our graduate students and respect their contributions. Since 2007, the University has invested more than $2 billion in direct financial support for graduate students, from stipends to health care and more, in the absence of union representation. Graduate students from across the University have worked directly with faculty and staff to improve graduate education and graduate student life. We recognize that there remains room for improvement, and the University is committed to continuous efforts to enhance support for graduate students.” The need for graduate students to unionize is particularly great for some. Lee said himself along with several other colleagues have taken on multiple jobs like working on campus as administrative assistants, library clerks, driving UBER, and more to make ends meet. Palmer said her work/life balance as a graduate assistant at UC has shifted multiple times. “In the beginning, it’s much more similar to college in that you’re taking courses, completing assignments for those courses, and toward the middle and end of the program you are much more on your own,” said Palmer. “You design your own projects and you’re basically independently working on that project and its more and more urgency to complete that work. So I would say for myself and many graduate students, the work/life balance can be less balanced than it should be.” To learn more about Graduate Students United visit https://uchicagogsu.org.

It was something that I took from my dad when we’re working on this project, he says, “Soul music is not a genre. Soul music is what people tap into, what their stories are.” It’s from their experiences. With “Rebirth of Soul,” were there any favorites on the album that you felt stood out for you? “These Arms of Mine,” “Lonely Teardrops” and “Make Me Yours.” Do you think that you being on this is going to bring in a new generation of followers reconnecting to some soul music? Who you see around that table is who you see in real life. My whole [time on other TV shows] I was playing a character. So, to be Syleena Johnson on “Sister Circle,” I can be myself--the person my kids and my husband can see. That’s really fun for me. I believe my co-hosts are the same because they are the way they are in the green room and everywhere else. We go out to dinner, it’s the same personalities, and the production company encourages it. We’re all God-fearing, we pray all the time and every day. We generally have fun at work and we talk about African-Amer-

With your journey from being in the business from a teenager; having a major record deal; creating your own independent label; health and fitness programs; reality television star to now a talk show co-hosts—what kind of person have you become out of it all? Speaking from my point of view, this is who I’ve always been and there has been a progression of this woman. I haven’t been perfect but no one is. It’s fun to be myself and I get to be that every day. In doing that, it would automatically relate to people. After I finish the talk show because that’s the stage—I’m off to the races. ENTERTAINMENT By Mary L. Datcher Defender Arts & Entertainment Editor “Les Miserables” is one of the most highly acclaimed musical productions to hit Broadway. Its return to Chicago’s Cadillac Palace has drawn many return fans and is building new ones. The Tony Award-winning production of Alain Boublil and Calude-Michel Schonberg has inspired new staging and amazing production settings. What sets “Les Miserables” apart from other musicals is its ensemble cast. From the beginning to the very end—each number will send chills throughout your spine. From “On My Own,” “One Day More” to “I Dreamed a Dream”—the energy and vocal talent resonating from each cast member is electrifying and hypnotic. Set in 19th century France, the musical is based on the novel by Victor Hugo, which takes the audiene through the trials of love, lost and revolution. Newcomer and cast member Phoenix Best embodies the role of Eponine. Her story is unique because unlike other young actors and dancers who sometimes find the road to success filled with long and tedious auditions, busting tables and juggling their dreams—Best landed her first professional job a month after graduating from college. “I went to DeSales University for musical theater. I’ve been singing and playing piano my whole life. I knew I wanted to do theater and went to school for it. I graduated in 2015 and I decided to move to NYC—right after graduation,” she says. “That’s the hub of theater in the U.S. so I went there. A month after I moved there, I got into ‘The Color Purple’ on Broadway. I did a few readings here and there.” Best grew up in northwest Philadelphia where she attended Phil-Mont Christian Academy. There she developed her skills as a strong vocalist and stage performer. It was there where she knew she had to excel to be the

Phoenix Best: Bringing Her Best to Broadway’s ‘Les Miserables’

Phoenix Best (Photo by Matthew Murphy) best at her craft. “I realized this was something I wanted to do. I went to a predominately White school. I was the only Black female in the theater department for most of my four years. The school did a lot of family-oriented productions. I loved the school that I attended but it made me have to fight and work harder than other students to get into a show or do a new project,” Best remembers. “I feel that’s how you learn if you want to do this for the rest of your life. The moment you have to work harder and fighter harder—it gets tiresome and I ask, ‘Can I do this?’ By the time I got to New York City, I said to myself, ‘Alright, it’s going to take work but I’m definitely going to do this.’” Best has played in smaller and understudy roles in “Dear Evean Hansen,” “Dreamgirls,” “Henry V,” and “Two Gentleman of Verona,” but the role of Eponine in “Les Miserables” is her first principal position in a major Broadway

musical. Because “Les Miserables” is an ensemble cast—the numbers are non-stop and there are very little breaks. It is a unique situation to experience, but a dream come true for Best. “Singing as Eponine is one of the hardest things that I can do. Because her songs are ‘belty’ and there are high notes—you have to take care of your body and voice. Having no book but a script to work from, I’m singing the entire show and that’s different,” Best says. “Usually you’ll sing a big number and you may talk for about 10 minutes and you may not be in that number. But for ‘Les Miz,’ it’s an ensemble piece with song after song after song and there is no break except for intermission. I feel like that is the biggest challenge for me. I feel it’s preparing me for whatever is next in my career.” Growing up, Best was encouraged by her mother and sister who continue to motivate her as she pursues her dream on Broadway. With an intense work schedule, she hasn’t fully enjoyed the sights of Chicago but plans to do a little sightseeing before the musical ends October 29. She’s grateful for the opportunity and says the audition process for “Les Miz” happened over a few months of back and forth call backs. Nonetheless, her hard work and diligence earned her a place on the popular production. Best says, “I want to sing well and do the character justice. I went in for this part a few times over a course of a few months. So, going in for it, they liked what I did the last time but they wanted to work with me on a new thing. It’s important to keep the integrity of the role but also to keep the integrity of what you want to bring to it.” Already ready to conquer the next role when it comes her way, she says, “Each person who plays this role is going to be different because we’re all different people. Some people back down from a challenge, but I’m the kind of person who sees the challenge and I’m ready to go for it.”

IN THE MIX

In the MIX: Big Sean, Cardi B. Invade Chicago, Common Ground Hosts STEM Conference at Google Chicago Headquarters By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Chicago is an incredible city for music, arts and culture, but it can also host some great parties. If you want to find out how to reach a millennial over 21, find out which brands are hosting “invite-only” events. You are sure to find the cool, hip and trendy hanging out and profiling with their mobile devices waiting for their favorite hip hop artist to hit the stage. This was the case at last week’s Metro PCS and Pandora party at the Park West. Yes…for all the old Mary L. Datcher heads…the Park West is still open and thriving. S/O to my girl Theresa Altgilbers who continues to book events at the venue. Metro PCS laid it out with awesome branding— “Sounds of Chicago” was a tribute to all things Chicago. This included treating 800 attendees with mini Chicago-style hotdogs, pizza puffs, Garrett popcorn and an open bar. While folks waited for the main act, Big Sean, to hit the stage—the brand had great giveaways including cell chargers, bags and thermal bottle jackets. Great job to the on-premise and event team for producing a wonderful event! Not to be outdone—the Spotify Rap Caviar tour hit the Aragon last Friday where the number one chick on the charts Cardi B aka Miss Bodak Yellow shared the bill with Chicago’s own Vic Mensa, Little Uzi, DJ Drama, and Playboi Carti. Over 2,000 heads were in attendance and the energy was on 10. The A-List Speakers series hosted another round of industry speakers at Pritizker School of Law on the Downtown Northwestern University campus. This past weekend, a stellar line-up of film and entertainment panelists spoke to an intimate group of aspiring law students and others about the “ins and outs” of the business. Moderated by Jeanne Sparrow, featured guests included Enter-

Big Sean (Photo by Tito Garcia) tainment Attorney Lisa Marie Boykin; Director/ Photographer Parrish Lewis; PR Consultant Robin Beaman and filmmaker Noel Occomy. Chicago’s own John Blu treated fans and industry insiders to an advance preview of his new album and his new clothing line, “Sacrifice Before Success,” at The Entrance in Harvey last weekend. The industry meet and greet was hosted by “L” and music spun by Blok Club DJ Founder, DJ Slugo. If you haven’t got in your fix for the Universal Soul Circus at Washington Park, this is the last week to enjoy two hours of delightful fun. It is one of my favorite family outings because it is held in the heart of the community. No downtown parking lot fees or wrestling with the app to add more minutes and money. The ONLY drawback—do not and I repeat DO NOT park if you are on the City of Chicago boot list. Please check those tickets because it is not a good look to have a yellow contraption on your tire— it’s kind of hard to explain that to your shorties. Thanks to the Department of Revenue, the nearly month-long event is also a boot-trap for vehicles on the city’s “pay-mewhat-you-owe-me list.” Now “Ju Ju” on that beat. In Memoriam Our condolences and prayers to the family of Leola White, who passed away on Oct. 16 at 102. She died peacefully at the home of her daughter Ann Anderson, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The grandmother of Jacquie Algee of SEIU, she says she was the “rock” of the family and will be sorely missed. Mrs. White was born in Natchez, Miss., and moved to Chicago in 1946. One of ten children born to her parents, with a fourth-grade education she made it to the north. It was in Chicago where she made a better way, opening up her home to Leola White (Photo courtesy of family) many friends, family and even strangers relocating from the South for a better way of life. Her granddaughter, Jacquie, described her as the “Harriett Tubman” of the family. Mrs. White worked at Young, Spring & Wire for 31 years on the South Side and also sold Avon on the side. The profits from her sales went to her second home, First Corinthian Baptist Church, 7500 S. Halsted –where she was the oldest and a devoted member. Visitation and services for Mrs. White were held last Friday at Evans Funeral Home. If you would like to hold the family in prayer, please send cards and notes to Evans Funeral Home in the memory of Mrs. Leola White. www.chicagodefender.com

Emotionally and Spiritually Because being healthy is more than what you put in your body and how much you move, Dr. Peonita Harris, executive director at Cornerstone Counseling Center of Chicago, weighed in with how people can take better care of their emotional health. Harris said an important step to remember throughout the day is as simple as exhaling and inhaling. Deep breathing is so important because it not only regulates the heart, it also helps people to calm down and to focus. Dr. Peonita Harris Another equally important step, according to Harris, is to “realize that God leaves space for you to be human.” She said, in that humanness,

there will be errors and imperfections and “truly somethings are out of your control so cut yourself some slack.” Harris also suggested that people not make their problems any larger than they really are. “If it is a hill, it is definitely not a mountain; it is just a hill.” She says to keep things in the proper perspective (and space), people should break down their issues into small pieces and stay focused on finding solutions. She reminds people to focus only on what the issue is, not on what happened last week or last month but what is happening now. Being okay with your emotions is important too. “Don’t be afraid of your emotions,” Harris explained. “Sometimes emotions mean exactly what they mean—if you are sad, you are sad. It doesn’t mean your world is falling apart. Learn to identify and recognize your emotions. “ As far as your spiritual health is concerned, Harris recommends “being consistent in setting aside time where you are focusing in on prayer, meditation, alone time, etc.” It can be a small amount of time, but consistency is important. Harris also suggests people looking to be spiritual-

ly healthy refocus their day around those things that are important to them. “Remember we are three-fold (mind, body, spirit) and when one thing happens in one realm it always effects the other realm. Take care of yourself in each one of those realms to stay connected and congruent.” She said she reminds people to spend time with good, positive people who speak the same language emotionally. “Sometimes we need to be reaffirmed and refocused and brought back to what is most important—and we can find that amongst people who also believe like we do.” Matthews of Ask Dr. Renee added that being grateful can go along way in improving our spiritual and emotional health. She said it’s a good idea to recall five things you’re grateful for each day. And while you’re counting your blessings, Matthews said it’s healthy to “choose happy.” She said it is a choice and “you can’t sit and wait for it to come; you have to choose it.” Be happy—and healthy! www.chicagodefender.com

Cubs Fall Short Of Repeat After losing to the Dodgers in 5 games, it’s time for the Cubs to rest and reload By Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS

Morgan Park Mustang Ayo Dosunmu is the newest “Fighting Illini”. (John L. Alexander/ The Bigs Visuals)

‘Mr. Why Not Me’ Is Staying Home Morgan Park’s Ayo Dosunmu is looking to start a new trend with commitment to University Of Illinois By Terrence Tomlin Sports By #TheBIGS In recent years, you’d be hard pressed to find a high school basketball scene in the country that has groomed more elite talent than Chicago. Sheron Collins in ’06 from Crane, Derrick Rose ’07 and Jabari Parker ’13 from Simeon, Jahlil Okafor in ’14 from Whitney Young, Wayne Blackshear ’11 and Charlie Moore ’16 from Morgan Park, just to name of few, have all held the title of #1 player in their respective high school classes. With all of this homegrown talent right in their backyard, it’s fair to think that in-state Universities like the University of Illinois, DePaul University, and Northwestern would be prime landing spots for the top Chicago ball players. Think again. One other similarity of this group is that when it came time to choose a college to attend, they all opted to attend out-of-state schools that provided what they viewed as a bigger stage to showcase their talents. The Duke’s. The North Carolina’s. The John Calipari’s and Rick Pitino’s have all done a better job at recruiting Chicago talent, and local institutions have been left with the responsibility to answer one question: When will the trend of Chicago hoopers leaving town end? Now we have the answer. “I’m committed to Illinois now and forever,” said Ayo Dosunmu, the #1 player in the state of Illinois after committing to the University Of Illinois last Thursday night at Station 23 on State St. in downtown Chicago. The Morgan Park Mustang is the newest “Fighting Illini” and now local www.chicagodefender.com

hoop heads are hoping Ayo starts a new trend of homegrown talent staying home. “It’s a lot of 5 Star recruits from Illinois who didn’t stay home and went elsewhere. Their careers were still successful, but that’s the route they chose to take. I choose to take another path,” Ayo told me. “I want to do it in my home state in front of my hometown fans.” Ayo wasn’t always highly touted. Coming into high school, he wasn’t ranked and he largely flew under the radar. But Morgan Park head coach Nick Irvin always saw something special in Dosunmu. “Ayo is a great person, one of the best kids I’ve ever been around on and off the court,” said Morgan Park head coach Nick Irvin. Irvin says Ayo is the right person to start the trend of local Chicago talent staying in state. “When a kid like Ayo commits to Illinois, it means a lot. He’s showing everybody it’s ok to go there. He’s just trying to change the way people think about Illinois. It was a great day for the state when he committed.” With Ayo’s commitment, new Illinois head coach Brad Underwood has his “must get” recruit. “He told me I can come in and play right away. He told me that I can play the most minutes out of any freshman in the country and that he was ready to put the ball in my hands,” said Ayo. “At the end of the day, I wanted to leave my legacy here. I’m gonna do it in my home state. Why not me? Why Not Me?” The popular phrase that has come to represent Ayo’s approach on and off the court, now has new meaning as he will be the chosen one to change the narrative. The next generation of Chicago hoopers will surely be keeping a close eye on “Mr. Why Not Me?”

The Los Angeles Dodgers brought the Cubs defense of their 2016 World Series title to a screeching halt after a whooping 11-1 Game 5 win last Thursday night. The win closed out the NLCS and gave the Dodgers their first National League Pennant in 29 years.... remember Kirk Gibson? Let the record show that I’m one of those guys who lives under the “championship or nothing” act. However, in this case, even though the club fell short of the overall goal--it wasn’t a lost season. It showed the grit and fight that it takes to play baseball into October for three straight years. The season started off very slow, going into the All-Star break with a lackluster 43-45 record and down 5.5 games to the first place Milwaukee Brewers. But after they shook the cobwebs off, they made a huge turnaround in the second half and were playing like defending Champions. The Cubs ended up going 49-25 to close the season and finished 6.0 games ahead of the second place “Brew Crew.” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he purposely kept his foot off the gas early in an effort to keep players fresh so they wouldn’t catch those end of the season blues. Those guys played more baseball than anyone over the last 3 years and it was evident in the Washington Nationals NLDS series. It took just about everything they had to muster a 3-2 series win and they left it all on the field in D.C. When Kris Bryant admitted to the series being draining and some of the guys being tired, I knew it was all but over. The Dodgers came in and handled their business accordingly and here we are. Pitching coach Chris Bosio was let go a day after Theo Epstein said Joe Maddon would return any coach he wanted. Bosio was the first coach hired by Epstein in 2012 and the first to go under Maddon’s regime. He was responsible for Jake Arrieta’s rise and Kyle Hendricks development, but his relationship with Joe wasn’t sturdy. Control and bullpen issues likely pushed the situation over the edge as Epstein said “the pitching peaked the last 3 weeks of the season but didn’t deliver in October.” The Cubs were fourth in the league in runs scored (422) but only managed to cross the plate 8 times in the 5 games series vs LA. There was no small ball and no manufacturing anything. Every run came off of the long ball. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo went cold as ice, hitting .200 and .135 respectively in 10 playoff games. Javier Baez had the roughest time of all. “El Mago” hit .076 (2-26) as his mind was on his family and his people affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. “Before the playoffs, I was so ready to go home. I finally got to bring my mom over here. Once the season is over, I will go home and take care of my people,” Baez said. Theo, Jed and the staff are faced with some tough decisions this offseason. With 8 free agents, bench coach Dave Martinez likely on the move for a managerial position, Jake Arrieta looking for max bread and some much needed arms, it’s safe to say more changes are on the horizon for the Cubs.

It’s hard to find good barbeque, even in a town that’s known for its pig roasting prowess. We made it easy by bringing in a fella whose taken BBQ to a whole new level with his own creation of tangy, spicy and sweet sauces. When you grow up in the backwoods of Illinois, you can count on two things: a longing to escape and a taste for BBQ. Since he was old enough to hold a basting brush, Todd helped his Dad and Grandpa smoke the pork and beef they raised themselves. Todd eventually got out of the backwoods. But his departure was unceremonious. A note pinned to one of the family’s seven grills stated simply, “Stepped out to get sauce.” After crisscrossing the country, he brought three powerful tastes back to Illinois— not the backwoods, but this time Mariano’s. An American Original, Todds BBQ serves a combination of smoked meats, inspired by family tradition. All meats are served “au natural” – which means without the sauce -- because the meat is just that good. Now Todd is hitting the road again with his Smoker Road Tour 2017, smoking his delectable meats and sauces at various Mariano’s in the area. So follow along to earn free ribs!
