Chicago Public Schools recently announced that suspensions continue to decline, with a 41 percent reduction in inschool suspensions and a 76 percent reduction in the rate of out-of-school suspensions since 2012, when the district adopted a revised Student Code of Conduct focused on social and emotional learning. Improving school climates through social and emotional learning, restorative practices, interventions and training for school security officers is a key focus outlined in the district’s vision. To develop preventative supports instead of focusing on punitive measures, CPS has increased training, coordination with CPD as well as various agencies and community groups

across Chicago to provide more individualized intervention support for all students. The reductions in suspension and expulsion rates mean that fewer students are removed from the classroom and missing instructional time. “With the support of dedicated principals, teachers and school staff, CPS has shifted cultures across the district to focus on building stronger school communities,” CPS CEO Forrest Claypool said. “A strong emphasis on restorative practices and social and emotional learning has created unprecedented progress in lowering suspensions, as well as helping students focus on learning when they’re in the classroom.” www.chicagodefender.com

No Justice, No Peace: Modern-Day Jim Crow By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Nearly nine years after the $20 million settlement issued by the City of Chicago to four former death row inmates who claimed they were tortured and beaten by former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge—torture victim Mark Maxson has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit seeking $54 million in damages. At 55, Maxson was released from the prison for the wrongful conviction of the murder and rape of six-year-old Lindsay Murdock in September 2016. During the summer of August 1992, Maxson worked around the neighborhood as a handyman and was familiar with his neighbors. On August 29, 1992, it was like any particular summer day— kids playing outside enjoying the final days before the new school year started. More trust was extended to children care freely going to the local corner store than today—and young Murdock was given $1 by his grandmother to get some candy. He never returned home. The Devil In Disguise The events that followed thereafter the boy’s disappearance and discovery of his body would change the lives of several people including Maxson. He knew the young victim and assisted the Chicago police—cooperating with them as he explained spotting the young boy later that night. Little did Maxson know, the interrogation and torture inflicted by then-Lieutenant Jon Burge and his detectives would coerce his false statement of admission of the murder and rape of a child. This type of brutality was commonplace during what is now called the “Burge era”-- from the early 1970s to mid1990s. Unfortunately, it is a culture which has had lasting effects throughout the Chicago police department long before Jon Burge earned his stripes. Under false testimony from detectives and crime laboratory testing, which found the blood on the victim’s clothing was neither the victim’s nor Maxson’s, a jury found Maxson guilty. He would be sentenced to life in prison without parole while Burge would continue to inflict irreparable damage to other lives. After several attempts to appeal his conviction and file a federal petition for a writ of habeas corpus, Maxson was denied. Without giving up, a motion was filed in May 2016 for DNA testing of the crime scene and was determined the blood found on the clothing was that of Wade Osbourne. Released after serving 22 years in prison for stabbing his uncle to death in 1994, Osbourne failed to register as a convicted murderer in 2016. His videotaped confession of the murder and rape of Murdock would lead to Maxson’s release from prison. Wallace “Gator” Bradley has worked with Maxson on his case since February 2013. His unique style of communicating with individuals from the streets has earned him the court appointed role of the “Urban Translator.” It’s been over two decades ago since Bradley’s release from Statesville prison. He has made it a mission to help those in the criminal system with fair representation as a trusted liaison between the courts, community and political allies. “You figure an individual charged with a crime they didn’t commit and in this situation, it was the murder of a child…individuals inside of those institutions, they do not condone crimes like this so every day that he was locked up and incarcerated—it was a target on his back,” Bradley says. “He didn’t know if he was going to be poisoned… If he’s in the shower, if he wasn’t going to be stabbed, abused or whatever happens. Harming a baby is another level. You figure he didn’t do this, you figure he’s the one who told the news media he knew the young child. He was doing everything as a citizen within the neighborhood to help them www.chicagodefender.com

Former CPD Commander Jon Burge apprehend whoever and [find out] whatever they did to the child.” Released, Rebuild and Reparations Upon his release, Bradley says one of the obstacles they ran into was acquiring Maxson’s identification. “Not only did Jesse White get him the I.D. –he didn’t pay for it.” He recalled White saying how important it is to give people a second chance. Knowing Bradley’s past and his journey, he told him “it’s good to help those who have been wrongfully convicted and the best I can do is to welcome you back to society because I don’t see you as a criminal.” Bradley says, “That was September 28, 2016 and a

month later, he received his Certificate of Innocence. Once he received the COI, he was eligible to receive compensation from the State for being wrongfully convicted for 24 years.” The state budget stalemate delayed payment to several exonerees. Fortunately, Maxson was granted his award based on the amount of years he served as an innocent man. Elliott Zinger has represented Maxson since November 2012, walking him throughout the process of appeal and eventually his release. Understanding the deep emotional and psychological damage his client endured while incarcerated, he filed a federal civil rights suit against the former CPD detectives, James Dwyer, John Duffy, William Marley, Angelo Pesavento and the City of Chicago. In the Initial Status Report filed by Maxson’s attorney, in Section 2, it says: “Plaintiff’s complaint seeks judgement against Defendants Dwyer, Duffy, Marley and Pesavento for the sum of thirty-six million in compensatory damages and eighteen million dollars in punitive damages, plus costs of this action and attorney’s fees.” A recent court date for discovery is coming up on December 15. Zinger says, “We’re in the discovery stage, there’s been no settlement. We’re in the process of discovery, finding out the facts, going through the files, ordering a lot of the records. We have also spoken to several experts that we intend to retain for the trial. We have an expert on false confessions, and a mental health expert. Those are the type of things we’re looking at preparing for trial,” he said. If won, this would be the biggest settlement the city would be responsible for awarding due to the wrath of Burge and the unleashing of police brutality and torture of African American men. continued on page 4

For many, the prison system has become the modern-day Jim Crow. (Photo by Gerald Herbert/AP Images) Jim Crow, continued from, Page 03

Fighting Systematic Slavery According to Mark Clements, it would still not be enough to heal the damage that has been endured by Maxson and the victims of torture in our system. A victim of the torture endured at the hands of Burge’s command—Clements was 16 when he was brought to Area Three Violent Crimes headquarters. There he was physically interrogated into a false confession of arson-murder charges he never committed. Released from Pontiac Correction Center in August 2009 after being locked up for 28 years—he is relentless in his advocacy for bringing awareness to what many go through after they are exonerated. He says, “The criminal justice system needs people who have been wrongfully convicted or placed in places of crimes they did not commit with very few options. Those very few options cause you to linger in our prison system.” The course of action of filing for appeals was a tedious and long trail of court paperwork for him and his team. With the help of the Northwestern University Center on Wrongful Convictions, a petition for his clemency was filed. “These appeals take its course and they can take three to five years. If you basically adjudicate three or four appeals, you’re looking at two decades inside an Illinois prison. I feel that the process is fast as far as how the system wants to execute the process, but the system is very slow when it comes to the individual’s innocence. Because it’s so slow, it causes an inmate to sit in that kind of environment when they should not be there at all,” Clements said. In many of these cases when a person is released, they are dealing with a heavy weight of adjustment. Clements says living “boxed-in” can bring on “stress, stroke, worry and all of that creates forms of mental illness.” Dealing with the repercussions first hand, he too, went through an emotional whirlwind—including a divorce due to the stress. “It creates a burden on the family that is still in [the accused person’s] corner. The criminal justice system as a whole has allegedly created reforms but those reforms have served for their benefit and has not served for the benefit of the accused. The Mark Maxson situation

is a tragedy,” he explains. “It’s a tragedy due to the fact that our criminal court system has brought DNA into evidence but the DNA can only work through the process if the accused requests it. Once the accused has requested it, it takes years for that process to be carried out. I think that is so unfair.” Having dealt with other similar cases for clients dealing with rebuilding their lives, Zinger admits Maxson’s situation carries a different type of weight. “In Mr. Maxson’s case, his situation is far worse than most of the others that I have encountered--both as representing and those I’ve spoken to which are probably dozens by now. As an African American man in our society, to be faced as being labeled as a child killer and a child molester and to be sitting in the county jail for 25 years—you can’t imagine… the psychological turmoil upon him was deep,” says Zinger. Maxson has been advised by his team to refrain from conducting interviews with the media until the lawsuit is settled by the courts. He is adjusting, and the undying support of his mother has helped him move through the shadows. The city council has awarded $111 million in damages to Burge victims for reparations, judgements and legal fees. Pain, Suffering and Reparations Bradley believes the “chickens are coming home to roost” with numerous complaints being filed, and unlike the Laquan McDonald settlement being voted unanimously by the city council without opposition—this case will be weighed heavily and with questions. “In light of the Laquan McDonald case when the elected officials didn’t realize what was happening when the lawyers wrote a letter to the general counsel…. They didn’t file a case in court, and when they got the money, they didn’t realize what was happening because the corporate counsel didn’t brief them. Now, they want to know everything that’s happening with these settlement and police misconduct cases,” says Bradley. Currently, Hale Law and The Sotos Law Firm have been retained as outside counsel on behalf of the city--private law firms whose hourly fees can range from $185-$250 and add up to $250,000 to $1 million—all at the taxpay-

ers’ expense. Maxson’s team is confident that there will be closure in favor of the plaintiff. Clements maintains unless the system changes, there will continue to be ongoing cases with people of color at the center. “I think we are under a culture of slavery. That culture of slavery has enacted forms of the new Jim Crow. That process was measured to take its time because they don’t care. It’s a ‘not caring’ process. It’s a process of ‘if they had been found guilty, they have committed the crime.’ In reality, Illinois is not far off each year as serving as a wrongful conviction capital.” The former police Commander retired to Florida after his release from prison on perjury and obstruction charges for his denial of abuse. Many feel it’s still not enough justice compared to the brutal pain and suffering incurred by his victims while the city is left to carry the bag of snakes that continue to rear its ugly head. Clements doesn’t blame Mayor Rahm Emanuel for an era that dates back on record to Mayor Richard J. Daley and then-Cook County State’s Attorney Richard M. Daley; he blames a criminal justice system that treats Black people as second-class citizens. He adds, “The Burge era literally dictates slavery. You mean to tell me that we have a police department that can pick off our communities...as many as 200 African -American and Latino people and take them down to the police stations and legally torture them on their genitals to beat them and to get them to say things that they have no intentions of saying? That worked as a form of justice and it’s been revealed—even by the City of Chicago--that tortures have occurred.” As Zinger and his legal team gather evidence for the mid-December court appearance, they are prepared for a possible lengthy, bureaucratic ball of red tape ahead, but then again, it may fall on the fate of the City Council Finance Committee. “I would imagine it would take another year or year and half. There’s a lot of discovery to be had. There’s also a lot of policies from the city of Chicago. There’s policies for similar cases of police misconduct in the Burge era. We look forward to bringing them forward but they all do take time,” he says. “We’re very confident in Mr. Maxson, we’re confident in his family and we believe we have a very strong case.” www.chicagodefender.com

New Era Chicago Strives to Empower Black Community to Move Forward

COMMUNITY

By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Black activist organization New Era Chicago (NEC) has taken a community first approach toward changing the socio-economic and political dynamics within Chicago’s African Americans neighborhoods. Launched in 2015 by members of its parent organization, New Era Detroit, NEC’s mission is to foster unity in African American communities by encouraging and empowering Black people to buy, build, and invest in their own communities. Recently, on a chilly Sunday afternoon, roughly two dozen members of NEC set up two large folding tables with more than 50 brown paper bags filled with free hot meals to offer to the public on the corner of 63rd and Ashland Ave. The NEC corner was made distinguishable with their staple large Pan African flags waving in the air. NEC members handed out bag lunches to walkers, drivers who pulled over, and even stepped onto stopped Chicago Transit Authority buses to give riders meals, too. During slow periods NEC members talked amongst themselves and chanted pro-Black expressions for all to hear. Taji Gaines, 34, an NEC member who took part in the free lunch giveaway, explained prior to becoming a member he was looking for something that reflected his beliefs in Chicago. He said he became aware of what New Era Detroit was accomplishing via their social media videos. He recalled in roughly April 2015 he came across NEC’s web page and decided to get involved with the organization. “New Era Detroit was putting the work in as far as the ideology I had of Black people coming together in the community and reclaiming power over themselves,” said Gaines. Gaines, a South Side native, called it “beautiful” to be a part of NEC as he is witnessing firsthand the impact the organization is having on a community not too far from where he grew up. “A lot of times you hear the Black community does not come together to do positive things to improve our conditions, but by being out here on the streets on a consistent basis, I’m seeing that’s a false notion,” said Gaines. “In order for us to perpetuate what’s really happening out here, we need to show what’s truly happening in the neighborhood through our actions.” Gaines told the Defender one of the initiatives NEC has moved forward with is its peer-to-peer mentorship program, “Building Young Kings,” which focuses on building leadership skills for young men and women to develop the tools necessary to help positively change their own communities. NEC is currently focusing its efforts in Englewood and surrounding communities, according to Gaines. In an effort to get to know community residents, NEC members have gone on patrol through different corridors throughout the community, one member said. Ernyta Hytower, New Era Chicago treasurer and member, who was also at the food giveaway, joined the organization roughly 15 months ago. Born and raised on 86th and Marshfield Ave. in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood, she expressed pride over not only where she is from but in the people who reside there. She said there’s a need to change Black communities for the better or at minimum restore the unity that once existed in years past. www.chicagodefender.com

New Era Chicago treasurer Ernyta Hytower holds up the Black Power fist during one of the organization’s hot meal food giveaways

Meal giveaway “People from Chicago will always say that they’re proud to be from here; there’s a certain way we walk, a certain way we talk, it’s always a camaraderie no matter what side of town you are on,” said Hytower. “The rhetoric is that it’s extremely dangerous or that you may tend to shy away from people, but there’s never been a community where my people are where I haven’t felt comfortable.” Hytower said anyone can be a part of positively impacting the African American community, even those who are not involved with a specific organization, by supporting Black businesses, lending their talents to help community residents, and more. Hytower stated NEC’s funding comes entirely from the support of the communities in which it serves. She said the organization hosts open mic nights where it asks for donations. It also received donations from people directly. The open mic nights are usually held once a week. She said all of the money collected is used to fund their programming. The culture within NEC is one of familial connections between its members, which then extends onward to everyone they encounter. Members often address one another with the titles “brother” and “sister” before saying their first name, or they use other terms of affection and

respect like “queen” and “king.” This practice harkens back to decades ago when such greetings were meant as not only as a term of endearment but to foster a sense of pride and unity amongst other community members. “We have to speak life into each other,” said Gaines. “We have to change our vocabulary and how we see each other to change how we interact with each other.” Hytower said they push the narrative of Black Love that does not always necessarily have to result in romance but rather a strong bond “A lot of time the relationship between Black men and Black women, these brothers got mommas and they love their mommas and know how we move, so a lot of times they just step back and let us do our thing and feel protected; you absolutely feel like that’s my brother,” said Hytower. Women hold an equally prominent role in the success and future of NEC as their male counterparts. Hytower noted that women have been a part of progressive movements for Black people dating as far back as Harriet Tubman. She said while the widely publicized narrative of Black activism may focus on men, women have always and will continue to lead and support all efforts. “James Brown said this is a man’s world so things appear more powerful when you have a brother there and sisters are typically fine to step back and let them do that part and things are going to be done on this end,” said Hytower. Gaines in a separate conversation echoed Hytower’s sentiment by stating, “women are what really make NEC go.” “Yes, the men are the ones out here on the frontlines fighting with police and foreign owned businesses and things like that, but the Black queen is right there on our side like she has always been; the women in NEC are just as powerful as the men in NEC,” said Gaines. To learn more about New Era Chicago and how to become a member, visit newerachicago.org/ or visit its Facebook page facebook.com/newerachicago/. In an attempt to highlight the accomplishments of local Black activist groups serving the Chicagoland area, the Defender will periodically select a different organization to feature for coverage. If you know of any organization that is doing exemplary work, please let us know. THE CHICAGO DEFENDER • November 1 - 7, 2017 05

University of Chicago Hosts Symposium to Tackle Racial Inequality By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer Over a two-day span, stakeholders, municipal agency officers, thought leaders, and private sector partners both locally and from across the country convened to discuss racial inequality and identify solutions at the University of Chicago’s Urban America Forward 2017: Bridging the Racial Wealth Divide held at the Chicago Theological Seminary, 1407 E. 60th St. Urban America Forward 2017 sought to address economic and financial empowerment, financial literacy, bridging the racial wealth divide, homeownership, educating and upskilling, and investment in minority owned business, according to Alaina Beverly, assistant vice president for Urban Affairs, Office of Federal Relations at the University of Chicago. The annual Urban America Forward series was launched in 2015. “The university sees itself as essential to its education mission to shed light on the challenges that are confronting urban America and to try to present solutions to improve quality of life,” said Beverly. “We are looking at today some of the best solutions from across the country in terms of asset building along four pillars.” Beverly emceed several conversations involving speakers representing UC including former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter. Nutter, who gave the keynote address on the second day, is a senior fellow at the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago and an executive fellow at the University of Chicago Urban Labs. During his remarks, Nutter spoke about the household median income disparity between African American and Hispanic families compared to that of Caucasian families. Specifically, he said the gap between African American and Caucasian families remains unchanged over several decades. He urged listeners to “stay woke.”

“Many of the things that some of us might take for granted...there’s a whole host of people, especially Black and Brown people, who can’t take any of those things for granted and who are literally living day-to-day, and actually for many, things are getting worse,” Nutter said. He continued and said that despite a wide variety of statistics that illustrate the American economy has rebounded since the Great Recession, there are several groups of people who simply have missed their opportunity to engage in the recovery and now are looking for new paths to recovery. He suggested the best way toward positively affecting change in one’s life is through education. In addition to the two day event, the UC announced the launch of a new program that will offer $35,000 grants to enhance the capacity of racial justice advocacy organizations’ ability to engage in financial empowerment and wealth-building work. “Those two grants will be in the effort to help build the capacity for the real lifeblood of this work,” said Beverly. Beverly said the grants will not be limited to just Chicago, however, the UC is invested in providing multiple resources to local efforts. She said an important aspect of the application is the ability to demonstrate a connection with a public sector partner. Beverly said there’s greater attention being drawn to the idea that government in and of itself cannot affect change on its own. She said in her travels to Brazil, Colombia and other locales, there’s a greater emphasis being put on universities to impact communities by both helping to identify problems and finding solutions. She said UC along with its students work alongside the Chicago Public School system, partners with small and medium sized businesses for employment opportunities, and more. “I think the University of Chicago has been heralded as an anchor institution because of its commitment to working with leaders in the surrounding community, and I think

Alaina Beverly, assistant vice president for Urban Affairs, Office of Federal Relations at the University of Chicago; and former Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter explained the importance of “staying woke” at the University of Chicago’s Urban America Forward 2017: Bridging the Racial Wealth Divide two day event. that from my perspective it is an honor to be able to work at the national level and highlight the great work that’s being done here in Chicago at the University of Chicago on the South Side,” said Beverly. The principle presenter of Urban America Forward 2017: Bridging the Racial Wealth Divide was the University of Chicago’s Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture; event co-sponsors included the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy; The Prudential Foundation; Prosperity Now; and Ariel Investments, LLC. Freeway Rick Ross: No Regrets, Only Lessons By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer Unlike the limitless stories of gangsters such as Al Capone, John Dillinger or even Sam Giancana—in the African American community, some of our most notorious former gangsters still live among us. While Ricky Donnell known as “Freeway Rick Ross” was serving a life sentence, rapper William Leonard Roberts adopted more than his name for the stage, but he elevated an image based on Ross’ bad boy lifestyle of being one of the country’s biggest drug traffickers in the 1980’s on the West Coast. Ross was granted an appeal by the federal court of appeals because the Clinton-era three-strikes law was unconstitutionally applied to his case. With a reduced sentence, Ross served 20 years in prison and was released September 29, 2009. The long stint inside of the prison system empowered his time inside to reflect and learn how to read at 28. There he studied intensely on the law, and therefore would discover a legal loophole that would lead to his release. At 57, he has not taken his new chapter on life for granted. For the past couple of years, he has traveled around the country to promote and discuss his book Freeway Rick Ross: The Untold Autobiography co-authored with Cathy Scott. The book is an in-depth look into his life from his family’s native roots of South Texas to the intricate web of international drug trafficking. “My mom moved to Los Angeles when I was three years old hoping to introduce us to a new lifestyle. More opportunities. I think. In Texas, you probably just going to be a farm boy you know. Hauling hay, cutting wood, raising cattle. So, I think my mom decided that we would have a better opportunity in the big city,” he said. Growing up in South Central, he fell in love with the game of tennis and excelled at it—often playing with pro players during their time off. Although he was attending high school—he could not read. His focus on his athleticism and not his academics derailed his chance of receiving a college scholarship. He began to work odd jobs and reverted to the street hustle—eventually selling cocaine for a former high school teacher. Ross recalls his early days selling drugs. “I would sell to people who worked at the shipyard, postal workers, doctors, lawyers and pimps. People who sold drugs, who sold other drugs. Basically, it was the affluent people who really called the shots in the community. Most people don’t really understand that but the drug dealers had a lot of influence in our community—tremendous influence,” he says. “That’s what I’m talking about in my book because I know once they read it, the rest of the country is going to want to know why this particular group is reading this book.” He said it’s this group who is supporting his book. “Well a lot of them are wondering well what can they do. You know I’ve met kids who went to college, got only degrees and can’t get a job. You know. It’s amazing how the society has a double standard.” 08 November 1 - 7, 2017 • THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Rick Ross with his autobiography. “We have to go above and beyond. You know when I was in prison, I started to write my book. I was thinking about what was I going to do when I got out. What kind of job can I get? Can I be gainfully employed? How can I take care of myself? I thought about when I got in the drug business. “I thought about the tactics and the skills that I used to go from having $125, then tap into a business that was making hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars a month. I wanted to tap into that stream of income. What I did was not to focus on the money aspect,” he explains. “I focused on learning as much as I could about the trade and becoming the best that I could. It wasn’t money with me, it was like a game. It was like playing tennis on the tennis court where I’m playing against Lawrence King who at one time was the second best Black tennis player in the world behind Arthur Ashe.” Ross said King would work out with him and whenever he would hit the court, he would get an adrenaline rush because it was his “dream to be him.” “That’s the way I went into the drug business where I was putting all of my energy, all my effort and all my thoughts into that.” It’s been nearly 30 years and not much has changed with our youth, the country’s most rural and low-income communities. With the lack of jobs and education, the odds of earning a decent living influences youth to choose the illegal lifestyle of selling drugs and resorting to other forms of crime. Often critics look at lack of parenting and no parental presence at all, but Ross says his mother did the best she could under the circumstances in raising him. “I mean it’s a double-edge sword. We have to look at our people. My mom’s father was a sharecropper and my mom used to pick cotton on the plantation. So, she was only allowed to go to school at certain times of the year. She never had the economical background that she needed to raise a serial entrepreneur,” Ross said. “I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life. I’ve collected cans and bottles. I’ve had car washes at 11 years old, I would round up my

guys and my mom would always say, ‘You’re the ringleader,’” he remembers. In 2010, Ross filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against William Leonard Roberts III for using the name Rick Ross under his stage name. He sought $10 million in compensation for the use of his name. The lawsuit was dismissed that same year and Def Jam moved forward to release Teflon Don in late July 2010. Ross refiled in the Los Angeles Superior Court and later updated a motion in his favor against Warner Bros. Records for the use of his name and image in July 2012. With a trial set late August 2013 to seek compensation for use, the court ruled in favor of the artist Rick Ross based on First amendment rights. By this time, the damage was done and the rapper’s street creditability was in question. “I mean for me it was just business-- nothing personal. I don’t have anything against the guy personally. I may crack a joke every now and then because I’m going to radio stations, and the host may say something, but I don’t have any ill feelings toward this guy. If he walked in today, I would shake his hand and have a conversation with him,” he says. “My lawyer came to me and said Universal Music owes me $50-$100 million and he asked me if I wanted him go get it. I said, ‘absolutely let’s get it’.” Ross says throughout his ordeal and lessons learned, he didn’t know if he would get out of prison. He wanted his book to be an open letter to other Black men and women who lost their way but could still find hope in the darkest places. When asked if he had any regrets, he answered: “That’s a hard word, to regret something because that would mean that you made a mistake that you didn’t learn from. I don’t think I have any regrets. My 20 years I did in prison—if I could get it back, I wouldn’t because I enjoyed those 20 years in prison when I was there.” In reflecting back to those days he spent incarcerated, Ross started a book club to engage the younger inmates to read books. “I was telling them, these last four or five months inside—I’m enjoying because I’ll never get to do this again.” www.chicagodefender.com

The cast of ‘The Black Renaissance’ delivers a provocative performance.

‘Black Renaissance’: A Musical Resistance Against Racism! Spectacular. Powerful. Explosive. By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play Racism! It’s a word that most are afraid to utter and even more are afraid to discuss. But this word has been a vital part of the Black culture and experience, and it has bound us with fear, hatred and kept us from the simplest part of humanity…equality. It is very important for ALL Americans to know something about the “Black experience” that played a massive role in shaping the American culture and politics of this nation. Brenda and Rick We all must also understand that McCain being oppressed is a horrible stain within the Black race and culture, and many wish oppression was no longer a part of our history, even if this type of servitude has provided free labor to help build the world as we know it today. Writer, Director, Producer, and Founder of Black Ensemble Theater Jackie Taylor delivers with a stellar performance of “The Black Renaissance” to open souls to see “what color is your mind?” This question was composed into one of the 9 fantastic songs that Jackie wrote to expose the question around racism. The musical score in “Black Renaissance” is nothing short of entertaining and uplifting. www.chicagodefender.com

Black Ensemble Theater Continues 2017 Dance Theater Season With the World Premiere of the Black Renaissance (A Musical Resistance Against Racism) Written and Directed by Jackie Taylor October 14-November 26, 2017 “The Black Renaissance” takes you on a voyage of “The Black Experience” in two eye-opening acts in which Taylor puts the truth on stage. Her passion to educate the audience is clear as she seeks to enlighten everyone about the type of world we live in, and what type of hidden and open racism we face on a daily basis. The play features an evolving process from Africa to America, with music that makes you feel and reflect on life today and in the past for Blacks who had to live, survive and fight to be free. But what does it mean to be free? This play is more than a moment in history that enlightens, educates and inspires. It is a musical resistance against that very powerful and unspoken evil called racism. “The Black Renaissance” is about Black Lives Matter and it is a MOVEMENT of our reality told through song and dance to help us understand the systematic process of racism and oppression. This thought-provoking production exposes the truth of racism by getting to the root of what it is and why we must remove this horrible stain from our society.

“The Black Renaissance” takes us through hundreds of years of Blacks constantly developing a culture of love and self-worth within a society of hate, while trying desperately to fit in a world with people with whom they should have been considered as equals, yet were mastered over and controlled by whippings, punishments, slave codes (the law) and the ungodly use of religion. The play explores the great “divide and conquer” in order to keep Blacks enslaved to their masters in hopes of slaves turning on each other through colorism for years to come and the lack of respect by calling a slave “boy” and “girl. It also shows how racism affects us even now when our president constantly promotes racial hatred and commands separatism and glorifies oppression. So what is in a name? Can a name define your worth? Or in this case your race? The Black race has been broken down in so many different ways, which includes what we will be called and what we should answer to. This is evident by searching our subscribed documented names to describe Black Americans in census surveys as Colored, Negro, Black and African American, which does not begin to describe the Black race as a part of the human race and all that we have been through. However, even though we have lived “The Slave Syndrome Blues,” our hope has always been “Oh Freedom.” “The Black Renaissance” is another one of Jackie Taylor’s great works on creating a strong institution committed to eliminating discrimination by allowing us to get a closer look at the context of racism. Although Blacks have only been free for 152 years, the race still carries the multiple burdens on their backs with lashes of pain and broken dreams of hope. We highly recommend that you see this wonderful production with your family so that you will be moved to join the resistance and help fight racism. The Cast Includes: Michael Adkins, Brian Boller, Jana’ah Coates, Rueben Echoles, Lemond Hayes, Wendell Jackson, Dwight Neal, Linnea Norwood, Rhonda Preston, LeKeya Shearrill, Henri Slater, Lynn Solar and Levi Stewart. The Fourth Annual African Fashion Week Brings Culture to Life By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The 4th Annual African Fashion Week (AFW) celebrates the latest and freshest African inspired styles starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12 at The Promontory, 5311 S. Lake Park Ave. Christianah Ajanaku, AFW founder and director, said she was inspired to launch the event and brand under the same name to shine a spotlight on African music, art, and of course, fashion. She said she noticed in recent years African fabrics were represented in fashion shows in Los Angeles and New York City, which prompted her to do the same in Chicago. Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, Ajanaku’s family moved to the United States in 1996, but not before she was able to gain an appreciation for the designs, colors, and fabrics she first encountered as a youth. “Growing up I was surrounded by fashion,” said Ajanaku. “I was surrounded by

colors, different materials that are not common here like the ankara. Coming to America, we lost a little bit of that, those materials aren’t readily available.” Producing AFW is not Ajanaku’s only job as she also works as a professional recruiter. She said juggling her two professions in years past became so daunting that she had to take days off of work leading up to the week of events to personally attend to events. This year, the AFW fashion show and the new fashion show wrap party will be the only events held for the week. She estimates more than 200 people will be in attendance at the show. She said while this year’s AFW does not currently have sponsors, she would “love” to secure several at the local, national, and international levels. She credited several members of her team for lending a hand. “We had a couple events throughout this whole year and now we are doing something different so we’re hoping to grow, and as we grow, it will turn into a fullblown week of production,” said Ajanaku.

Christianah Ajanaku is the founder and director of African Fashion Week. Ajanaku has turned the week of celebrating African art, culture, and fashion into a brand all its own. Social media has been one of Ajanaku’s best tools in which she has used to bring AFW to life. She said social media has served as a great source for how she’s been able to find the pieces to put the show together. She said in instances where prospective designers wanted to participate in the show, they were taken through a vetting process to determine if their collection fit the vision of AFW for that year. She said she selects designers to be in the show via social media, through word of mouth, and from past experiences. “I am constantly looking for designers because I am constantly looking for an opportunity to showcase their work,” said Ajanaku. “A lot of our designers are up and coming designers which I like. That way AFW gives them an opportunity to showcase their talent and showcase their style.” Models selected to walk in AFW are most commonly selected by the designers themselves through casting calls, said Ajanaku. However, some are discovered via social media, too. Both men’s and women’s clothing will be featured in this year’s fashion show. The designers this year are: Binta Sagale, RogueBear, RuvaAfricWear, and ILAVA. ILAVA is particularly unique due to its mission to empower women and inspire change throughout the World through its lifestyle brand, according to its website. Ajanaku said she plans to return home in the near future and secure more designers to participate in AFW events to come. To learn more about Binta Sagale and

She said she wants to expand AFW to include international designers and put Chicago on the map. ‘Hamilton’ Makes History Exciting For Area High School Students By Kerris Guinn Defender Contributing Writer You would think that studying the founding fathers of the United States would enlist a less than enthused reaction from students. But not the day students from 15 schools showcased what they learned about the United States founding fathers when they participated in the CIBC Hamilton Education Program. As the bright lights flooded the theater stage before Ari Afsar, the actress who plays Eliza Hamilton in the highly acclaimed musical “Hamilton,” walked across it to begin the program, the theater boomed with screams of excitement and applause from students who came from schools around Chicago. The buzz of elation was palpable as the cast of “Hamilton” made learning about the founding fathers anything but boring. October 18 kicked off the second year of the innovative education program that debuted at HAMILTON on Broadway, in partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation. This program helped bring the history of the founding fathers to life for 1,900 students who participated in studying American history through a special integrated curriculum. Students like Alexis Ayala, who was described as quiet by his history teacher Bill Hauser from Hoffman Estates High School, were inspired to come out of their shell while participating in this program. Hauser said, “Through this project I was able to see a whole new side to them [students], through their poetry and their rap... with their performances, just their creativity...I think that through the creative process of putting together a performance, we saw a different side to kids, kids that I would have never thought would’ve [stood] in front of a class to speak all of a sudden are comfortable with their poetry and singing.” Ayala was one of those students, who inspired by Hamilton, decided to rap in front of his classmates. Speaking as Hamilton addressing the congress about paying their taxes, Ayala recited: “The laws that I pass to every state will be obeyed; there’s no debate so don’t pay your taxes late before I decide your freaking fate…” Ayala plans on continuing to rap in the future. Some creative students with particularly unique and skillful projects presented their work to a competition hosted by the cast of “Hamilton” to see which students were the best. Out of the many that entered, 15 groups of students made the cut. They were: Connor White, Rosemarie Mercado and Kristopher Kusierz (Addison www.chicagodefender.com

Trail High School), Derrian Samuels (Argo Community High School), Jojo Gallegos (Bloom High School), Michael Fraction (Bloom Trail High School), Jaydon Toney, Emiliano Segovia (Christ The King Jesuit College Prep), Neiman Williams, Rashaad Whaley and Josh Campbell ( CICS Ralph Ellison), Ashley Chiu (East Leyden High School), Brea Matthews, Kendal Sohn (Evanston Township High School), Yaneli Dejesus (Hammond High School), Jonathan Morales, Cristina Flores (Sterling Morton East High School), Ashley Martinez (Noble-Rauner College Prep), Anahi Soto (East High School), Skylar Gertonson, Luis Herrera (Thornton Fractional South High School), Syndi Rice, Madison Wicks (University of Chicago-Woodlawn), and Emily O’Brochta (Willowbrook High School). A few of the performances that stood out included: Argo Community High School’s Derrian Samuels, whose quick tempo poem about the story of Eqiuano gave strong lyricism that resonated: “A victim of a crime against humanity, a child snatched from his parents...the only place he ever called home disappearing in the distance, the last thing he ever sees a kid traumatized as he waits to see his only sister, the only person left standing by his side stole, bought and sold right before his very eyes…” And that was just the tip of the iceberg. Another performance that stood out was a group of young men, Neiman Williams, Rashaad Whaley and Josh Campbell, who used the stage to immerse the audience into a scene where friends discuss current politics, from taking a knee at NFL games during the national anthem and how that intersects with the Constitution and injustices that have occurred with African Americans and continues to occur to this day. “The Constitution didn’t give us what it promised, but rather evolved our bondage, ironic our founding fathers be lying...cowards they be hiding behind us,” spoke Campbell. East Leyden High School gave the audience Ashley Chiu, who is a powerhouse. Not only did she perform her oratorical piece “Woman” with strength and tenacity that engrossed the audience and garnered their praise, but she was the force that initially brought the education program to East Leyden High School. “This is not equal, we should not have to make slogans for respect, we shouldn’t let a cheeto puff disrespect us. We shouldn’t have to argue for our rights, it’s our body, our choices; men have no right to make these choices for us,” said Chiu. University of Chicago-Woodlawn gave the duet of Sydni Rice and Madison Wicks. Sydni sang a beautiful melody while

CIBC Hamilton Education Program Madison’s firm words offered strength and substance to the performance. At the end of the performances, a question and answer session was held with the cast members including Ari Asfar, who plays Eliza Hamilton; Montego Glover, who plays Angelica Skylar Church; Sam Aberman, who is a swing ( an actor that covers all of the ensemble women), Chloe Campbell, who is an ensemble dancer, and Candace Quarrels, also an ensemble dancer.

During the session, the “Hamilton” actresses talked about what it was like growing up, attending high school and college. They also talked about their career and what it was like auditioning for “Hamilton.” The audience of students enjoyed the conversation with the actresses, either applauding or laughing at each others’ responses. Aberman offered students parting advice: “Embrace the things that make you strange because they will make you strong and empathetic, and so much kinder as you get older…”

In the MIX: Obama Foundation Summit Highlights, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds Performs in Chicago

Comcast surprises Internet Essentials students with laptops. (Photo by Mary L. Datcher)

By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer The hottest ticket in town this week was the Obama Foundation Summit being held at the newly opened Wintrust Arena in the South Loop. On Tuesday, President Barack Obama opened up the session with an empowering and moving dialogue with “The Fierce Urgency of Now.” It was just the adrenaline rush needed to get attendees to enjoy the breakout sessions. Guess who surprised a group of students at Hyde Park Academy before heading over to the Marriott Marquis? Mrs. Michelle Obama and Prince Harry kicked it with 20 Mary L. Datcher lucky high school students along with Principal Antonio Ross. Afterwards Prince Harry joined Ariel Investments President Mellody Hobson for a conversation in ways youth can be the drivers of the community. The two-day summit concludes on Wednesday with non-stop programming that kicks off with morning meditation, more breakout sessions, a conversation with Mrs. Obama and the final event wraps up with President Obama and a concert featuring Chance the Rapper, Gloria Estefan and others. Wish I can add more but media access was off limits to the breakout sessions. We understand various organizations were granted passes for their students to attend. For many, this was a once-in-lifetime experience that will stay with them forever and hopefully will spark community responsibility and engagement. On the political front, former Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn has thrown his hat into the Attorney General race. Can you hear the crickets? Meanwhile, the Cook County Commissioner race in the 3rd District is stirring some interest with both Charisse Williams and Preckwinkle-endorsed William Lowry competing for Commissioner Butler’s seat. There will be some big shoes to fill and whoever is up to the task had better get to know the community “inside and out.” Williams is off to a good start as she makes the rounds with her “community talks,” inviting constituents to come out and discuss the issues that most concern them. She’s young, vibrant and her grind is there. Hopefully, some of the “old heads” won’t discourage her and encourage the next generation of leaders. Yeah…you know who you are. As more candidates under 40 step forward to try their hand at public service—more folks who have held the same post for many years are being challenged. It’s petition time and it’s a test of who gets the most valid signatures to place on the ballot. Illinois politics are not for the weak, so candidates—button up because you will be left in the cold. From A Wolverine To A Cyclone By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports By #TheBIGS After receiving over a dozen offers from colleges hoping to land Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker, his list was down to a final 3, Xavier, Illinois and Iowa St. and it was finally Decision Day. With all eyes on him, Talen sat center stage at Simeon Career Academy joined by his mother and coach Robert Smith and announced “next year I will be attending…Iowa State University.” Making it official that he would go from being a Wolverine to a Cyclone, The BIGS’ very own Terrence Tomlin and Eugene McIntosh caught up with the Simeon star to discuss what made Iowa St. standout and his plans for his senior season on the hardwood at Simeon. The Bigs: Why Iowa State over Illinois and Xavier? Talen: I picked them because I felt like I was wanted the most there. They’ve been talking to me the longest. They offered me back in June and have been in touch with me since my sophomore year so I felt the time was right to get it over with. www.chicagodefender.com

Simeon’s Talen Horton-Tucker Talks To #TheBIGS About His Iowa St. Commitment The Bigs: You and your mother shared the stage as you announced your decision to commit to Iowa State. Can you describe the emotions you two felt in that moment? Talen: Just being able to do this and be in this position. There are not many African-American kids in Chicago who have this opportunity to do this like this. So for me, I’m happy to be able to put on for my family and represent. The Bigs: It’s always an honor when you get to use basketball, a sport you’ve played your entire life, to get a free education. It’s a good positive story to combat the negativity we hear coming from this city. You

also get to continue on the path of your dream of being in the NBA. With your college decision being out of the way, how have you expanded your game to let people know you are the clear-cut best player in the state of Illinois? Talen: Basically, it’s a great feeling but I try not to focus on comparing my game to anyone else’s. That start’s some unnecessary drama that I don’t like. I want to just focus on basketball. With that said, I do want to show everybody what I can do and that I improved from last year. I was playing with a couple other great players last year like Kezo (Brown) and Even (Gilyard). This year I’m more of the leader and I am looking forward to showing people what I can do. The Bigs: What are your thoughts on joining Zion Griffin of Hinsdale South and George Conditt of Corliss, two other local hoopers headed to Iowa St.? Talen: My phone is probably going crazy right now with text from those guys, but I think it’s great. Knowing George and Zion the way I do is great. Just being able to be around those guys is just a great feeling, and I am looking forward to playing with them.
