Santa to Visit Children at La Rabida Hospital Children who are hospitalized at La Rabida Children’s Hospital on Christmas morning can still get a visit from Santa. In fact, Santa will leave behind his sleigh and reindeer and travel to the South Side hospital in a Chicago Fire Department Engine Truck at 9 a.m. Patients will be treated to a visit from Santa and new toys. Santa has been stopping by La Rabida for 45 years in a row. The hospital provides specialized, family-centered health care to children with medically complex conditions, disabilities and chronic illness, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan at Jackson Park, La Rabida has served the children of Chicago for more than 120 years.

Christmas Traditions

Chicago Celebs Share What The Holidays Mean to Them

What Christmas means to me is spending time with the people I love, being thankful for my blessings and doing something nice - big or small- for others. We focus as a family on helping people who would not otherwise have a Christmas. So every year, I find two children who need help through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program or USPS Operation Santa, and my two boys help me shop for them. Merry Christmas everyone. Enjoy your friends and family. Dawn Hasbrouck, Evening Anchor, Fox 32 News at 5 and 9pm.

THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

My greatest Christmas memories center around my family, when my three brothers and my sister and I were children. Nothing can replace the excitement of waking up very early Christmas morning and running to that little aluminum tree in the living room. Sometimes there wasn’t much there, but that didn’t matter. Our parents did the very best they could and we appreciated every single little thing. Hosea Sanders, ABC 7 Anchor

COMMUNITY Christmas Traditions, continued from, Page 03

Naturally, Christmas makes me reminiscent of the taste of egg nog, the smell of fresh garland, the sound of carolers and holiday tunes. But what I love most is the spirit of Christmas. The generosity among friends and strangers, the benevolence of the giving spirit and cheer. Most inspiring, is how we show that we love one another and the renewed sense of optimism and hope. For me, Christmas is always a magical time of year. Terrell Brown, ABC 7 Anchor

Christmas means memories for me and my fondest is the tradition of going to the Candy Cane house located on 69th and Vernon. There was nothing like it-- thousands of lights, decorations and people from all over the city coming to see this house! A feeling of togetherness! WGCI FM Radio Personality Frankie Robinson

Christmas means a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the most precious gift God could ever give us. Growing up as a PK (preacher’s kid), Christmas morning always started with prayer and communion before any presents were opened to remind us of the real reason for the season. Fast forward to 2017, as a mom of two beautiful spirited children, Zoe (15) and Max (10), I have enjoyed carrying on these traditions and creating some of our own, which include lots of family time, games, movies, good food and loads of Christmas cookies for us and of course Santa! Val Warner, co-host Windy City Live

Although I live in Sunny California, Christmas isn’t the same unless I’m in cold a$$ Chicago with warm love from family and friends. There’s no place I would rather be in the world. Larry Sims Celebrity Hairstylist and star of VH1's "Invite Only"

Christmas is a pause, a “selah moment” to remember all the things and people that ACTUALLY matter. Grammy nominated Gospel artist Jonathan McReynolds

Christmas means family, love and giving…It’s a constant reminder that life is a miracle. Never take it for granted and make EVERYDAY count. Grammy award-winning Gospel artist Donald Lawrence

Christmas is such a beautiful time of the year, I actually appreciate the cold weather, pearly white snow and all the exciting lights and decorations. This holiday brings that feeling of having family altogether at one time cooking a great meal, sharing gifts, appreciating and valuing our time together—every year. Christmas to me is a time for family and gift giving. As a child it was fun to believe in the stories of Santa bringing gifts and I would never take that away from my young children. As an adult, now through my studies I feel in upcoming times it could be one of the first in forever and the most meaningful movement that we as Black people could prove if we united and boycotted what big consumers benefit from our collective dollar and invested into this holiday more in our own communities. We would make an impact of how valuable our dollar is in this world and it would change the face of how people look at the holiday in the future. 3rd District Cook County Commissioner Candidate William “Bill” Lowry By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer When 16-year old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed ten feet from William Lowry’s home in 2013, it created a ripple effect throughout his household and throughout the Kenwood community. Little did he know, her death would open up his eyes to the reality of violence that plagues our city and how quickly a family can endure tragedy—challenged by a simple question by his son, Evan, who asked, “Dad what are you going to do?” The husband and father of three stepped up to the plate. After discussing it with his wife, Cheryl, they decided to gather a diverse mix of friends from different walks of life to their North Kenwood home one Saturday morning for breakfast. It was there when the plan to do more within the community took shape. Lowry said, “It’s time to stop hiding and come out in the open and do something.” After forming The It’s Time Organization (TITO), it has partnered with long-time organization BUILD to help youth through mentorship, self-esteem and education. The group often works with students at Wendell Phillips Academy, where BUILD runs its South Side program. After learning that Cook County Commissioner Jerry “Iceman” Butler would no longer seek re-election for the 3rd District seat—a seat he’s had for nearly 30 years—Lowry announced his candidacy to run in late August. For the past two decades, Lowry has practiced law— heading up the firm—Nyhan, Bambrick, Kinzie and Lowry. Growing up on the South Side near the Avalon community, his father was a Human Resource executive and his mom was a school teacher for the past 40 years. Graduating from Francis Parker—a private and very affluent high school in Lincoln Park—Lowry went on to attend Lake Forest College. He earned his law degree from Loyola Law School. Even though he sits on 14 boards as a volunteer advisor to notable organizations—Lowry felt his extensive experience in senior management and strategy would be more effective in public service. “It’s time to get off the sidelines, because I think things are getting worse. I believe violence is worse and jobs are scarce in certain parts of the 3rd District. Healthcare is under siege. I cannot fathom a court system where 86 percent of the inmates are Black and brown, and 86 percent are in for nonviolent crimes and they can’t make bail. I look at how hard it is for some of our returning citizens to get a fair chance,” he says. While out in the field, collecting petitions—Lowry found himself visiting one of the neighborhood housing complexes where he had a discussion with a young man who wasn’t registered to vote. “He explained, ‘I just got out of jail for selling drugs. I got three daughters behind that door and I don’t want to go back. I need a job.’ I was digging in my pocket for a card and it just so happen part of a twenty-dollar bill came out. I said it was my gift to his three children with a meal,” said Lowry. “That man looked at me and started crying—a grown THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

William Lowry man. I put him in touch with the Safer Foundation. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s another example of me being out there to help instead of being at home or in the office.” Currently, there are seven candidates running for the Cook County Board Commissioner office in the 3rd District—a district that covers a unique area from Streeterville, Near North, Bronzeville and as southwest as the Auburn Gresham community. “We have a number of well-meaning and qualified people running for this office. But, what sets me apart are a couple of things. My legal training—once the light goes off, you think in a way that you hadn’t thought before. You think in a 360 degree ‘holistic’ way. You peel the onion. It’s important to do when you’re faced with tough issues. Not only have I read tons of legislation, but I’ve drafted legislation. I think those are skills which will help me look at the legislation as I serve,” he said. Lowry says as the president of the law firm, some of his responsibilities include hiring, strategic planning, policy making, financial planning, reading and preparing a budget. He says, “These are all skills that will serve the people of the 3rd District well.” Healthcare “I think it’s imperative that we need to continue to provide affordable healthcare back to our citizens of the 3rd District and Cook County. It’s important for our children, for our Medicaid recipients, for our seniors. I also think a critical component of healthcare is mental healthcare. We have teens and families in our communities who are in dire need of medical care,” Lowry says. Along with Pastor Chris Harris, he is working on the building of the Turn Center, which is based on an Israeli model where ministers are trained to provide mental healthcare to the community, especially those suffering from PTSD. Endorsed by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Lowry admits he was not an advocate of the sweetened beverage tax and shared his thoughts with her in September. “I have served as her Finance Chair for about seven www.chicagodefender.com

years, so I’ve been an advisor. I applaud the overall work she’s done since she’s served in the seat. I said if that means she needs to support someone else, ‘I get it.’ She not only respected and acknowledged my independence, she thought I would be a phenomenal Commissioner and that I would do good work on behalf of the district. She gave me her support. “ Public Safety His relationships with both Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx and Sheriff Tom Dart are familiar. He’s worked with Foxx during her time as Chief of Staff for President Preckwinkle and attended law school with Dart. He believes these relationships will allow him to have a common ground of finding viable solutions to curbing violence and assisting the citizens in the 3rd District. He recognizes to reduce violence and crime is to increase jobs. Lowry says, “If you’re talking about jobs, in certain parts of the district, you have to also talk about workforce development. When there are job opportunities presented, we have qualified citizens ready to take them. If you’re brining jobs to the district, in addition to workforce development, you have a plan for placement.” Small Business & Economic Development “We have to make sure to lean on our financial institutions to support the businesses—not only on Michigan Ave. but all of our businesses. We have some 110,000 African-American owned businesses in Cook County. That’s more than any other county in the country. Most of those businesses lack capacity because financial institutions don’t support them. People like me have to push those financial institutions,” he said. “We need effective leadership. I define ‘effective leadership’ as communication. One thing I learned about communication is not just talking, it’s listening. I think listening is more important about communication than talking. Collaboration, which I don’t think we see enough in politics, and then action. We see a lot folks talking but are they really taking action? These are the reasons I want to do this because these are skill sets that I have.” December 20 - 26, 2017 5

Young, Gifted and Black: What No One Told Me About Being “First” to Go to College As college application season looms, here is some advice for first time college attendees By Brandon Terrell Defender Guest Columnist I was reared and schooled in Detroit, where poverty and oppression eloquently danced while violence and crime serenaded the communities. The crime and oppression in my neighborhood drove me to submit a college application that changed my life’s trajectory. I wasn’t going to college to become an adult; I faced mature challenges and struggles long before filling out my college applications. For me, higher education represented an escape from adult struggles. But, I couldn’t escape the financial challenges. For first-generation college students like me, the responsibil-

ities designed for mature adults were often delegated to us adolescents. Now that I’m in graduate school, I have some distance and perspective on what first-gens really need to thrive at a four-year college. And, despite some model programs at universities, I fear the current political climate and threatened budget cuts will only make it harder for first-gens to obtain a fouryear degree. I know from experience my journey as a first-gen and non-traditional undergraduate college student is devastatingly common. No one in high school or college spoke to me about the financial realities of being a student who couldn’t rely on family for support. FASFA, Pell Grants and loans were for-

eign concepts. The conversations I had growing up rarely involved college. We talked about who was buying dinner that night or who needed to get a job to help pay bills. Survival was the goal. By the time I applied to college, I had already tangled with life and boxed with oppression, discrimination, stereotypical beliefs, and negative ideologies, all while juggling school, plus a job or two. Life had prepared me for college. But the challenges never stopped coming. Even as I struggled to pay tuition and buy meals when the food courts closed for the weekends, I often got calls from relatives who needed help buying groceries. Relief started with me. I had no safety net - I WAS the safety net. Completing college required a survival balancing act— maintaining my GPA, bridging gaps back at home, and navigating collegiate bureaucracies while carefully responding to microaggressions and prejudice in majority White spaces. Spectators would classify the underlying factor of our motivation as “grit” or “determination,” but for many first gens, our motivation is simply survival. We have no choice. Missing an assignment, being too tired to attend a bio lecture after working more than 30 hours a week, failing a 300 level course, or even missing a tuition payment created a slippery slope back to the environment that suffocated dreams. But we are a population colleges cannot afford to lose, as we represented 36 percent of students seeking a fouryear degree nationwide in 2012. Politicians, educators, social workers, counselors, and administrators must address the intersecting social and cultural challenges that precede our applications, accompany us to college, and follow us even after securing a degree. Access to college and financial aid is not enough to secure a better quality of life for students coming from low-income backgrounds. The gap is widening with only 14 percent of the most economically disadvantaged students earning a bachelor’s degree, according to a 2015 federal study. We need a different support system to thrive in college--mentors, help with living expenses, travel costs, tutors, flexible schedules, and emotional support from other students who feel isolated, but are coping with similar struggles. We need to stop talking about college attainment in simplistic ways. It takes so much more than grit. Brandon Terrell is currently attending graduate school at Eastern Michigan University, after graduating there in 2015 with a bachelor’s in psychology. He also works at the University of Michigan as a program assistant for the community health department.

Deadline Approaches for Joyner Scholarship Radio DJ and philanthropist Tom Joyner is reminding students that the deadline for the Tom Joyner Foundation “Full Ride” scholarship program is rapidly approaching. Bringing Christmas Trees Home For The Holidays By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer It’s Christmas time on the South Side—which means Peter Meils will be selling Christmas trees near the corner of 95th & Stony Island Avenue like he has for decades. Meils, 85, said he has sold Christmas trees since 1955 around the South Side of Chicago. For years like clockwork, he was stationed on the corner of 95th & Stony Island Avenue selling Christmas trees. However, this year he has moved to a lot on the corner of 94th & Stony Island. He said “a lot of people” have purchased trees from him over the years. He said the prices of trees vary based on their size (he has some trees as tall as 10 feet high) and type. Wreaths are sold separately for Peter Meils $10-25 and tree holders at $8. He said he’s open 24 hours. “This is the joy of my life to sell Christmas trees; as long as I live, I’ll keep it going,” said Meils. “I’ve been here for 40 years and nobody bothers me. I’ve got my license and everything.” Meils, who said he immigrated from Greece years ago, said he began selling trees this year on Nov. 15 and intends to continue selling until after Christmas. The long-

Peter Meils has been selling Christmas trees for 40 years.

Jantice Daniels and Shirley Deberry time Chicago resident told the Defender he has Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, White Pine, and more types of trees available. He said his partner in Michigan grows the trees, then he buys them wholesale, cuts them, and ships them to Chicago for sale. “Sure, there’s a lot of work [preparing trees],” said Meils. “You have to spray them, you have to prune them, you got to grow them, you have to spray for bugs, cut everything, and then ship them.” When not bringing holiday cheer, Meils said he sold real estate. For some people in Chicagoland, buying a natural Christmas tree is just a part of celebrating the holiday. Jantice Daniels shared purchasing “live trees” for

Christmas is one of her family’s holiday traditions. She said she tried visiting large retail locations like Menards and Home Depot, but their variety and scale are not up to Meils’ standard. “We’ve shopped almost everywhere else and they didn’t have trees so this is always a breath of fresh air,” said Daniels. “The fresh pine smell in the home as opposed to an artificial tree just makes it more authentic to me.” Daniels was joined by her grandmother, Shirley Deberry, at Meils’ lot. Deberry said she has bought live trees “off-and-on for 20 years.” Deberry said she typically shops at Meils’ lot for her trees instead of using an artificial tree, adding that bringing home a tree “adds to the excitement.” “[Deberry] had her artificial tree but even with my Mom and Dad we’ve always had live trees,” said Daniels. “Her artificial tree only lasted for so long and then live trees have been [purchased] since I’ve been a child.” The South Siders said they were shopping for three trees that were “big and full.” “We’re a little late this year, we usually get it right after Thanksgiving,” stated Deberry. “I think they have a very good variety here and the prices are a lot better than when I went somewhere else for a live tree.”

The Jackson Action Coalition Brings Santa to the West Side By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer With the 4th Annual “Breakfast With Santa” event, the Jackson Action Coalition’s (JAC) founder Marseil Jackson was looking to create a new Christmas tradition for the children on Chicago’s West Side. The festivities were held at United For Better Living, 4540 W. Washington Blvd., on Saturday, Dec. 16. Jackson’s goal this year was to provide at least 150 children with a toy. He said he personally bought 125 gifts. This year’s attendees received gifts, a picture with Santa, and a raffle ticket. “Breakfast with Santa” returned this year after a one year hiatus due to what Jackson called “personal issues.” The Jackson Action Coalition (JAC) is a community organizing group launched by Jackson in 2009 with the goal of bridging gaps and bringing generations together through outreach services and events. Jackson said JAC is a non-profit funded through community support. The inspiration behind JAC’s annual “Breakfast With Santa” stems from childhood memories for Jackson. He remembers his great grandmother, a full-time employee at O’Hare International Airport, taking him to the company’s “Breakfast with Santa” event for employees for as long as he was young enough to attend. He said, “no child should go through this holiday season without receiving a gift.” He recognized that for some of the event’s attendees, these gifts will be the only ones they receive this holiday season. “One of the things that I saw was around Christmas, the children had no hope, they had nothing around to bring them memories, and I always think about that memory of 8 December 20 - 26, 2017

breakfast with Santa and I just wanted to recreate that for the community,” said Jackson. “It’s something we want to give back to put a smile on a family’s face and to help them during one of the most depressing seasons of the year in America.” One particular family that received a Nintendo Wii from a previous installment has consistently participated in the event years later, according to Jackson. He said those sort of efforts make all the difference. Timing has been of the essence for Jackson as the decision to put on the “Breakfast with Santa” was made only a few weeks ago. He said families called and asked him if the event would take place this year, which prompted him to get in gear. “In two weeks’ time, we’ve been able to pull this thing off,” said Jackson. In an effort to make the event free for attendees, some of JAC’s partners and sponsors stepped to the plate to contribute, said Jackson. For example, he said MacArthur’s Restaurant, 5412 W. Madison St., offered breakfast at a discounted rate. And The Arthur Lockhart Resource Institute donated 60 toys. Jackson recently held an “Elf Party,” where volunteers were invited to help wrap the presents leading up to the big event. John Fountain III, one of the volunteers who helped wrap the gifts, said he “appreciated” Jackson’s effort in giving back to the greater community. “I think it’s a beautiful thing, I think the idea is that when you do something positive and you are affected by the community because we are a part of the village, I think it’s important to continue to sustain that effort,” said Fountain. www.chicagodefender.com

Marseil Jackson Amina Elamin volunteered to lend a helping hand to her friend Marseil. “I know the kids are going to love it. It’s good to see things like this in the community happening for them and offering some kind of help for people in the community,” said Elamin. “[The holiday season] has to put you in a positive mood and hopefully it’s contagious and makes people want to give and be positive.” Jackson said any additional gifts collected after the event would go toward homeless shelters and women’s shelters for a final giveaway to close the year. What Has Happened to Our Holiday—Kwanzaa? By Kerris Guinn Defender Contributing Writer As of 2016, Chicago has a population of 887,608 African Americans living in the city and yet very few people celebrate the holiday that was designed to unite and celebrate the African American community. Even with the cultural re-emergence of 1960-esque sentiments with the rise of the social justice campaign of Black Lives Matter, Jay-Z debuting the critically acclaimed “4:44” album that promoted self-awareness and fiscal responsibility within the community and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” that showcased the tenuous racial undertones of the acceptance and desirability of Black culture, among the many other Black programs that are prominently displayed and exalted right now to highlight the Black experiences, the kinara is still missing from many minority millennials tables. Why? Kwanzaa History Kwanzaa is a holiday that was originally developed by Dr. Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated on December 26, 1966 through January 1, 1967. This holiday was originally created as a means to reconnect the African American community to their African roots after a deadly riot broke out in the predominantly Black community of Watts in Los Angeles. Inspired by African culture, Dr. Karenga combined different aspects of the Zulu and Ashanti tribes’ harvest celebrations to cultivate the holiday called Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits” Controversies of Kwanzaa Despite the innocent intentions of Kwanzaa, the holiday itself is plagued with unsettling events that are tied to the celebration, thanks to its founder Dr. Karenga. Dr. Karenga has a prestigious past earning a master’s degree in political science and African studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, producing a multitude of African-centric books including, “Introduction to Black Studies” and “Selections From Husia: Sacred Wisdom of Ancient Egypt.” He has also published a host of different articles on “Black Scholar” and was closely tied to Malcolm X and the Black Pride movement. However, he also has a checkered reputation with African Americans. Dr. Karenga took a pivotal role helping the Los Angeles police limit Black rioting after Dr. Martin Luther King THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Jr.’s assassination in 1968. His mediating skills were highly sought after with high ranking political figures such as California Governor Ronald Reagan, ex-Los Angeles mayor Sam Yorty and Senator Hubert Humphrey, to name a few. These actions caused Dr. Karenga to become reviled within the Black Power movement; while some African Americans took issue with the philosophies he practiced when dealing with the concerns of Black people, other African American extremists thought that his increasing association with White politicians was problematic in and of itself. US vs. the Black Panthers The Black Power movement in the late 1960’s was helmed by two political groups who held the same objective of creating unity, strength and economic opportunity for African Americans in the United States. But these two groups held opposing views on how the Black Power Movement would be able to achieve this goal. The US Black nationalism movement, created and spurred by Dr. Karenga, sought to promote change while adhering to the normal political process. The Black Panthers, lead by Huey P. Newton, held more extremist ideologies seeking to create a new system that would grant, “... land, bread, housing, housing, education, clothing, justice, and peace. And as our major political objective, a United Nations-supervised plebiscite to be held throughout the black colony in which only black colonial subjects will be allowed to participate, for the purpose of determining the will of black people as to their national destiny.” The dissonance between the two group reached its boiling point after two Black panther members were killed by US gunmen in 1969. Karenga’s reputation continued to deteriorate after being sentenced to jail for three years on charges of assaulting a female US member. Kwanzaa kaput? Kwanzaa experienced a renaissance in the 90’s thanks to the legitimacy brought back to Dr. Karenga’s name after returning to meditating the Los Angeles community when the Rodney King verdict stimulated riots throughout the community. The participation in Kwanzaa has since dwindled despite the positive ideology, with only an estimate of between one million participants enjoying the celebration annually. The ultimate hindrance to the holiday is that people weren’t raised celebrating the tradition like they celebrate www.chicagodefender.com

Thanksgiving or Christmas, says some. Reggie Guyton, an actor at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, says, “What’s really stopping me is just taking the time to reflect and acknowledge. It’s so easy for me to just completely forget because I wasn’t brought up with it.” But all hope isn’t lost yet for Kwanzaa. Even though the holiday isn’t celebrated as once designed by Dr. Karenga, with the lighting of seven different candles over the course of a week-- it is still being acknowledged. Kwanzaa is celebrated or acknowledged typically in the course of one day, on college campuses like Chicago State University and University of Illinois Chicago. Furthermore, churches like Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago make it a habit to host an annual Kwanzaa celebration, albeit only one day during the week. The DuSable Museum has a two-day event and other groups have programs. So, all hope for Kwanzaa isn’t lost yet. When asked would he consider practicing the tradition, Guyton said, “I totally would...I already try to keep some of the principles in my everyday life.” Ceremony The first candle of the ceremony is lit. This candle is black, representing the people, it’s placed in the middle of the kinara, and represents the first of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. This principle is referred to as Umoja, meaning unity. This principle focuses on maintaining the unity of the family, community, nation and race. The red candle is lit, representing the second principle of Kwanzaa. This principle is Kujichagulia. This means self-determination and requires participants to define themselves culturally and economically. It also desires for participants to create a sense of self-reliance by building necessities they need for themselves. Furthermore Kujichagulia encourages participants to make their own unique contribution to the forward flow of human history. Water is poured into kikombe cha umoja, or wooden cup of unity. The next candle to be lit is also red and it represents Ujamaa. Ujamaa means cooperative economics; this principle requires participants to exercise control over the economics of the Black community in a “mutually-beneficial process of economy and shared work and shared wealth.” Supporting local businesses is essential for observing this principle. The next candle to be lit symbolizes Ujamaa, which means cooperative economics; this principle requires participants to exercise control over the economics of the Black community in a “mutually-beneficial process of economy and shared work and shared wealth” Supporting local businesses is essential for observing this principle. Kuumba is the next principle of Nguzo Saba and it encourages community creativity. This principle encourages people to use their talents to foster beauty in their surroundings and leave their community better than they once found it. Now, focusing on the right side of the kinara, a green candle representing Ujima is lit. Ujima represents collective work and responsibility of its participants. Ujima encourages people to work as an altruistic community. This principle encourages people to help one another solve their problems as if they were their own. The next principle of Nguzo Saba is Nia or purpose. Nia symbolizes community building, which requires participants to work together to help strengthen the economic success of their community. Finally, the last principle of Nguzo Saba is Imani, a Swahili word that translates to faith. This principle wants to restore faith in humanity. December 20 - 26, 2017 9

City.Life.Style Something ‘Beautiful’ Is Happening at the Cadillac Palace By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play! Music is the expression of emotions. It is an undeniable sound with perfect lyrics, harmony, vocal or instrumental sounds. It can produce a flood of memories-- some good and some bad. One woman, in particular, contributed to the soundtrack of a generation with a collection of songs that instantly became classic, timeless hits. “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” is based on the fascinating life of one of the greatest songwriters and performers in musical history. Carole King’s story is breathtaking, heartwarming, joyous and heartbreaking all rolled into one spectacular night of musical theater. This feel-good play is an excellent story about how a woman fought her way into the record business as a teenager, only to find that sometimes the way you want things to go, doesn’t always happen as planned; but still, sometimes the other way can bring about something beautiful. The musical tells the inspiring true story of the early life and career of Carole King played by Sarah Bockel, who was phenomenal, believable and relatable. The show begins with Carole singing “So Far Away” at Carnegie Hall in 1971 and then it flashes to her backstory. Carole Klein, the Brooklyn native, composes her first hit song, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” in 1959 when she is 17, pregnant and newly married to 20-year-old lyricist

Gerry Goffin (Andrew Brewer). In the decade to follow, Carole used songs that she wrote, often together with her husband Gerry that changed the music world. These great hits were sung by The Drifters (“Some Kind of Wonderful”) and The Righteous Brothers (“You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”) as well as The Shirelles (“Will You Love Me Tomorrow”) and Little Eva (“The Loco-Motion”). With the competitive friendship with another hit songwriting team of Barry Mann (Jacob Heimer) and Cynthia Weil (Sarah Goeke), this double team duo formed songs that made many singers great. Along with the help of a Time Square music publisher and producer named Don Kirshner (James Clow) known as “The Man With The Golden Ear,” the world of music was transformed. The play featured some fantastic groups from the 60’s, which was superb from the opening of Sarah coming on the stage as Carole King to the end where she sings her famous song “I Feel the Earth Move.” Most of the singers were good, however, the gentlemen that played The Drifters performed them to perfection, down to their dance moves, which were flawless. Sarah Goeke as Cynthia Weil and Jacob Heimer as Barry Mann were equally outstanding. Combined with Sarah and Gerry, they provided the core of a masterpiece performance of joy, excitement and a simply splendid good-ole time all around. It wasn’t until Carole King’s personal life started falling apart that she found her voice by stepping out of the shadows and starting over with “Tapestry,” a deeply personal collection of songs that becomes one of the best-selling albums of all time. King is the most celebrated and iconic singer/songwriter of all time, and this musical hitmaker has a playlist that continues to live on in our hearts. To date, Carole King has more than 400 of her songs that have been recorded by approximately 1,000 artists (according to her website).

Director Marc Bruni does an impressive job of bringing the book from Douglas McGrath to life on stage, and “Beautiful” is sure to delight your soul and make your heart sing all the way home. It’s a play that we would love to see again and again and again! We highly recommend this joyous celebration of Carole King’s memorable and classic hits because it is “Some Kind of Wonderful!” The Cast Includes: Carole King (Sarah Bockel) Genie Klein (Suzanne Grodner) Betty (Elena Ricardo) Neil Sedaka (John Michael Dias) Lucille (Marla Louissaint) Don Kirshner (James Clow) Gerry Goffin (Andrew Brewer) The Drifters (Josh A. Dawson, Jay McKenzie (12/512/3/17), Dimitri Joseph Moise (1/2-1/28/18), Avery Smith, Kristopher Stanley Ward Cynthia Weil (Sarah Goeke) Barry Mann (Jacob Heimer) The Shirelles (McKynleigh Alden Abraham) Little Eva (Alexis Tidwell) The Righteous Brothers (John Michael Dias, Matt Faucher) “One Fine Day” Backup Singers (Traci Elaine Lee, Ma rla Louissant, Alexis Tidwell Nick (Matt Faucher) Marilyn Wald (Aashley Morgan) “Uptown” Singer (Traci Elaine Lee) Lou Adler (John Michael Dias)

COMMUNITY Cast Members Avery Smith and Josh Dawson Talk About “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical” By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer One of the components of a successful musical is the performances carried by the actors. Nothing could be closer to the truth for “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical.” Based on the musical journey of the legendary singer/ songwriter Carol King—the ensemble cast gives a riveting and nostalgic performance bringing King’s hit songs to life. Both Josh Dawson and Avery Smith are part of the production tour which runs in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace through January 8. The Chicago Defender spoke with both actors—one experiencing his first professional tour and another who is wrapping up his chapter with the production. Homewood Flossmoor, a suburb south of Chicago, is where Avery Smith grew up most of his childhood. He can recall his family’s influence in the acting world. “When I was little, I would see my uncle on TV and doing things that I felt like I got to see it. I guess [I got to see] the reality of the industry in a very grand way just because it was right in front of our eyes as kids. As soon as we got older, I transitioned into it. I have cousins who are writers and producers and some family friends, friends of my parents, who still do it,” said Smith. Having graduated from Homewood Flossmoor High School and heading to The Boston Conservatory, eventually acquiring his B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University— Smith immediately dived into his first professional role in “Beautiful.” He is grateful for his parent’s encouragement

and support. “Chicago’s like big but so small. I think they were very supportive and I think we were just people of faith and just believed whatever is meant for you is not going to pass you up,” he says. Josh Dawson has a couple notches on his acting belt working on national tour “The Broadway Boys,” Wynton Marsalis Jazz at Lincoln Center and regional theater companies with performances at the Dallas Theatre Center and the Paramount Theatre in Chicago. The son of a minister, Dawson is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but eventually moved with his family to Dallas, Texas. “I grew up singing in the church where I played piano and drums at my dad’s church. Music has been a crucial part of my life for a very long time. My dad decided to up and move the family to Dallas to start a church,” he said.

www.chicagodefender.com

He sang in the church choir in addition to being involved in high school plays. He attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and moved to New York to take a short break from school. Dawson finished his theater training and education at the University of Michigan. “I worked at the Paramount Theater in Chicago and spent a lot of time doing a lot of shows there. Just working here and there and going all over the country and the world. That brought me to “Beautiful.” I’m actually one of four original cast members still in the company so I’ve been here for about two and a half years on the road.” Newcomer Smith is excited to see travel and be a part of the benefits of traveling with a major production tour. “I think the benefits of touring--you immediately get immersed in a new area every week depending on how long the show is in town. You get to meet brand new people. You get to be immersed in different cultures and different areas. I think that’s nice. Being an actor teaches you how to build stamina and how to be able to perform under different climates or elevation levels,” he explained. “For example, in the latter half of this past tour from about September to now, we’ve been in elevated areas. I was in Reno and could barely breathe. It’s just your body learns how to focus and push yourself and to fight through it,” Smith says. And Dawson is grateful for all the wonderful opportunities “Beautiful” has opened up for him. “I’m almost 30 years old now so my career is focused on what can I do to sustain myself, to be able to support myself and my family. The last 10 years of my life has been fine because I’ve just been able to travel and see the world and experience all life has to offer. Now, I’m thinking about kids and thinking about marriage.” He admits, he will be leaving the show after Chicago to return to New York City—auditioning and exploring other roles.

3 Holiday Gifts for Her That Aren’t The D By Sheri Flanders 12 Voices 2017 proved that some of us will do anything “For The D,” and unsurprisingly revealed that some men don’t know the difference between consensual and non-consensual D. So, in honor of the #MeToo Men’s Hall of Shame including Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer and Sheri Flanders Russell Simmons, and the holiday season, I’d like to provide some gift giving options for those who aren’t savvy enough to buy a Cinnabon scented Yankee Company candle and call it a day. I know, #NotAllMen! YOU are one of the good ones! But if it’s not you, then it is definitely someone you know, and that someone is definitely your friend Darren from college--the one your wife hates FOR GOOD REASON. Yeah, he’s got the hookup on the dankest weed, but he is also a disrespectful sexist scrub who has the nerve to talk trash about his girlfriend even though he just lost his part-time job at Dengeos for poor dental hygiene. 1. GIVE HER THE GIFT - of checking his big mouth when it starts running. And toothpaste. A certain kind of man is a walking cesspool of toxic masculinity. He is the self-proclaimed Authority on Manhood. According to his ancient wisdom, men hunt; women gather. Dude. It is 2017 and you are an accountant. No one needs to hunt! Skirt steak is readily available in the Whole Foods freezer case. You just pulled a hammy reaching for the remote. This man worries that walking the wrong way looks “gay.” The color pink is kryptonite for his fragile arse. He scolds little boys for playing with dolls.

Sir, I wish you would’ve played with dolls when you were a wee lad. Perhaps then your imagination might have let Barbie and Ken - or the Michael Jackson from Thriller doll with one leg in my toybox - go on a date to a nice restaurant, one with glass cups and free bread. And on that imaginary date, you might have developed the ability to converse casually on a vast multitude of topics, not just the Gawd-ordained roles of men and women and the Illuminati. 2. GIVE HER THE GIFT – of a Prince box set. Also, let people live their damn lives. Now that feminism is a thing that men have to pay attention to, some men are confused. How are you supposed to flirt? Can’t you call her “bubble butt” at work anymore without getting fired? How does one find a mate without chloroform and a windowless van? It’s sooo confusing! This is the time to call your lamest, nerdiest buddy who is inexplicably married to the dopest chick. Literally no one can figure out how this matchup happened. He has ZERO game, a modest job in middle-management, a bald spot and a third-trimester beer belly. He wears a night retainer. He is the mathematical average of an Average Joe. And yet he goes home every night and eats spaghetti with a Victoria’s Secret Angel. How did he do it? He probably said: “Hi, my name is Roger, nice to meet you,” while wearing dirty broken glasses with tape on them. And HE STILL GOT THE DIGITS. 3. GIVE HER THE GIFT of you being boring af. Men, I hope this helps. I know 2017 ended rough for you. The lines are being redrawn and the halcyon years of D’s waving freely in the wind are over, but flirting and sexuality are not dead. There’s no shortage of consensual fun to be had! Trust us, 2018 will be a better year! Unless of course, you just got called into HR. plo͞oˈtäkrəsē/ noun government by the wealthy I would say I largely grew up on government assistance programs, from WIC to Medicaid, from Food Stamps to Section 8. I am the eldest of four, born to a single mother, so the size of our household in comparison to the size of our income meant that we were below the poverty line. As a child, I greatly benefited from many programs and initiatives, most of which were paid for with American tax dollars. Whenever any of us hurt ourselves, which you might expect to happen in a house with four kids, it was Medicaid that guaranteed we would receive treatment. When I broke my leg, I had to travel to the hospital in an ambulance and I had to undergo surgery. Sometimes I wonder where I would be without these kinds of programs, or if there is a kid somewhere out there in the world who has also broken his leg but is not guaranteed treatment. When we ask for healthcare for all, we are burdened with the question, “Well, how are we going to pay for that?” That is a question with which I am very familiar, in this context and others. That is a question the world’s wealthy elite (“the 1%”) never have to ask themselves. They will be guaranteed treatment. They will also be guaranteed education, likely in private schools and universities. They won’t have to ask themselves

My eyes roamed the cloudless skies in which the sun sat, its rays reflecting off of the tall, pastel buildings that surrounded us, hoping to fry us like ants on pavement. I found bliss in the beads of sweat that streaked from my hairline down my face, granting me sweet release one drop at a time before disappearing into a wooly beard. My relief was short lived as the frustration of car horns re-emerged, gradually agonizing me like a migraine in the middle of a kindergarten graduation. City.Life.Style In the MIX: Holiday Things To Do For The Shorties, Chicago Artists Give Back By Mary L. Datcher Senior Staff Writer If you are a parent, guardian, or like me a devoted auntie to pre-K to pre-teens—then it is vitally important to find out where all the hip holiday outings for kids are in Chicagoland. If you’re just getting into the groove of planning—technically you are a bit tardy to the party, but alas’ there’s still some time. Make sure you have some change in your pocket because entertaining little people is no longer a Mary L. Datcher trip to McDonald’s, let them loose for 30 minutes and you’re home— they are a very intellectual and well-informed bunch. Top 5 Chicagoland Christmas Stops For Kids 1. Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest December 1 – January 7 Navy Pier December thru January 7 It was OFF-THE-CHAIN! An inside winter wonderland for kids and adults who simply love all things Christmas. Located in the East end of Navy Pier on the second level of Festival Hall, be prepared for a brief walk. It depends on where you park but preferably in the East parking garage. Do not get savvy and use Spot Hero trying to save a couple of bucks. You will have a serious hike from outside of Navy Pier to the very end—your kids will hate you. Swallow the $25 parking garage fee, and get your walking shoes on. From the various inflatable slides, the indoor rides for both toddlers and adults—there was something for every age. The ice skating rink was a wonderful sight to see for those who are skilled at skating and the beginners who can hold the side railing. To capture the moments, key stations included photo areas for families to purchase pictures taken at the mini-train rides, the sleigh area and of course meeting Santa and his helpers. 2. Holiday Lights at Brookfield Brookfield Zoo Remaining days: Dec. 26 thru Dec.31 For a group or large family, the annual Holiday Lights at Brookfield is a beautiful sight to see when the sun goes down. It takes place every weekend except for Christmas Eve and Christmas day but resumes back on December 26 from 10:00 a.m. – 6 p.m. Throughout the zoo, there are huge animal figures lit up along the way to the awesome “wow” of small children. Attendees get to enjoy live musical performances at the Holly Jolly Theater with magic shows and characters engaging visitors with games and playful interaction. There is a great deal to do throughout your time at the zoo and it’s not just for children; if you’re looking for a fun date night to tap into the inner child—this is a good, fun and somewhat “cheap date.” http://www.czs.org/HolidayMagic 3. 75th Anniversary of Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light Museum of Science and Industry 4. 3rd Annual Kwanzaa Observance Program DuSable of African American History December 26 & December 27 12:30pm – 2:30pm 740 E. 56th Place Remembering our Ancestors and Building on their Legacy; performances by: Thunder Sky Drummers, Mag16 December 20 - 26, 2017

how they will pay for it, meanwhile the rest of us are in public schools. Public education in the United States is largely a state and local responsibility. For elementary and secondary education funding, some states foot as much as 80 percent of the bill, others as low as 27 percent (Illinois in 2009). Local governments are left to pay for the rest, which largely comes from local property taxes. In a city like Chicago, which engineered modern segregation and redlining, the impact of which is still felt today, you can quickly start to see the inequities in this system. The places with the most infrastructure, the most businesses, and the nicest homes are the places that spend more on their students. It could be the difference between a school district spending $3,000 per student/per year or $12,000 per student/per year. After secondary school, you are left to the dogs. The continual growing cost of tuition at both public and private colleges and universities means degrees remain inaccessible to so many. When we ask for education for all, we are burdened with the question, “Well, how are we going to pay for that?” That is a question I had to answer when I said I wantTHE CHICAGO DEFENDER

ed to go to college. I knew I needed to go to college to try to make it somewhere in the world, and so $130,000 worth of student loans got me a degree. The wealth gap is growing, the “Paradise Papers” reveal the gap is even bigger than we imagined. For years we have been scrambling over the same crumbs, when the rest of the cake is hidden offshore. It surprises me we aren’t in the streets yet, protesting like the French during their revolution. In the meantime, I ask that you at least start to have a revolution of thought. Consider that this system is not working for the people, and start to imagine a new system that is both equitable and sustainable. Maybe that’s how we make America great, we “let them eat cake.” cap•i•tal•ism ˈkapədlˌizəm/ noun an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. tug-of-war with the break pedal, I could hear my messenger bag shuffle in the back seat and send something to the ground with a thud. I glanced back and it was as if I had seen Heaven on Earth in the form of a bottle of FIJI. I nearly threw my arm out of socket lunging after it, biting my bottom lip and stretching as far as I could. My mouth watered as my fingertips scraped alongside the icy side of the plastic container, trying to get a hold -BANG! My foot slammed down on the brake, flinging me forward into the steering wheel. I looked up in a daze before locking in on a group of kids running across the street with a fùtbol and no care in the world. One of the boys caught my eye and led the others off quickly in case I wanted to start a fuss. I didn’t. Actually, I was finding it difficult to swallow any water because I couldn’t stop laughing. They looked all too familiar; when I was their age, my rag-tag bunch only came to the city to try to sneak in the stadium and see a match. We would imitate the moves we had seen so much the next day that Mrs. Langley prayed for dismissal to come sooner. We shared in her eagerness, because after our final prayer, we were off to the old abandoned lots outside of the city. We would play for hours; kicking, running and laughing as we fought to score a goal or “hit the bricks,” usually looking for an advantage by holding onto each other’s shirts.

Shirts that were usually tattered and falling off to begin with. Man, we’ve come a long way from there -A ringing cell phone brought me back to the present. “Hello?” “Samuel, Hey, it’s Dean Calvet. Are you on your way to campus? I sat up in my seat as if I could be seen. “Hey Dean, yes, I’m just caught up in some traffic.” “Oh no worries, something came up but I’ll swing by your office when I get back on campus.” An awkward silence ensued. Sensing that I was unsure how to react, Dean Calvet continued assuringly. “I just wanted to make sure I got a chance to see you today, I’ve got some good news.” My heart nearly dropped, I broke out in celebration while trying to remain vocally composed. “Wonderful. Yes, I will be on campus within the hour. I’ll see you soon.” My thoughts began to race and horns followed them. I looked up to see that things had begun to clear up ahead, waving my hand out of the window in acknowledgment, I eased my foot onto the gas. Enjoy The Moment and Keep Moving Forward. #TheBIGS Chicago Sports Christmas List #TheBIGS’ very own Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh have a special wish list for Santa that will make Chicago Sports fans everywhere a little more merrier on Christmas Day By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas on the Chicago Sports Scene. Cubs and White Sox fans are trying not to burn themselves with phony “Hot Stove” rumors. Bears fans who have thrown in the towel on this season are focused on who they will select with their top 10 pick come draft time, and Bulls fans are wondering just how much more red they can take seeing as the team sits at the bottom of the league standings with the half-way point of their season right around the corner. Chicago sports fans could use a little Christmas cheer so #TheBIGS’ very own Terrence Tomlin and Eugene McIntosh took matters into their own hands and made a list to Santa and asked him to check it twice. Checkout a special wish list for Santa that will make Chicago Sports fans everywhere a little more merrier on Christmas Day.

SPORTS Terrence

Eugene Now my first instinct is to come out swinging and ask Santa to do some major dirty work by sticking a fork in the #GarPax era…but tis’ the season to be jolly right? I’ll settle for them moving the MJ statue back outside where fans have access to “His Airness” 24/7365…

It starts from the top so until Jerry Reinsdorf/GarPax gracefully bow out and someone who cares about culture and not all about the +/- comes in and turns this thing around, it will be the same old story. Is that too much to ask for Santa?

Rick Hahn proved that Theo Epstein isn’t the only GM in town with cojones. Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Adam Eaton, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera and Todd Fraizer have all been moved with little to no backlash effects, but Santa please don’t let Rich Hahn pull the trigger on Jose Abreu--he’s without question “the captain now”& the CH is better with than without Jose.

I know Rick Hahn & Co. watched what the team on the North Side did to build a winner. The Sox have great prospects and I’m sure they have a big name on the radar. I want them to define an identity/style of play with the way the AL is lining up.

A franchise quarterback? Got that. Thunder and lightning backfield combo? Got those. Young monsters on defense? Got that too. A trusted coaching staff for all of the above? Santa, make that happen for ya boy!

The defense has been relatively decent this year and the backfield looks like the future. Money Making Mitch needs some help on the outside. What’s up with Kevin White? This season is a wrap--Dowell Loggains can open the playbook ALL THE WAY UP!

Santa….I want less Ryan Dempster “Harry Caray” impersonations during the 7th inning stretch and a lot for media parking at Wrigley….oh….and an “El Mago” jersey (wink wink)

It’s time to get back to the promised land. Starting pitching and a young stud is all I’m asking for until it’s time to break the bank for Bryce Harper after next season. Theo & Jed are making it happen during the winter meetings. Is it baseball season yet?
