CITY NEWS CPS to Expand After School Programs at 88 Schools Chicago Public Schools recently announced $1 million in new funding to expand after-school programming at 88 elementary schools across Chicago, a 35 percent expansion that will serve nearly 8,000 additional students. The grant will support after-school programs focused on arts, health and wellness, academic enhancement and college and career exploration. “The after-school programming investment is crucial in ensuring students have access to high quality programs that keep them safe and engaged,” said Mayor Emanuel. “This is yet another example of how we can work together to invest in Chicago’s future and provide students with the resources necessary for a brighter future.” This grant allows each school to create programming to support its unique student populations based on four categories: academic acceleration and support, arts and cultural enrich-

ment, health and fitness, and college and career exploration. Whether schools are starting a spoken word club, taking a field trip to a local tech startup, or offering before-school yoga sessions, these out of school programs can provide students with enriching experiences that help bolster their academic performance and social and emotional well-being. “The City of Chicago is stepping up and making critical investments in programs that keep our students active, engaged and excited about learning – in and out of the classroom,” said Dr. Janice K. Jackson, Acting Chief Executive Officer at Chicago Public Schools. “After-school programs provide our students with opportunities to discover their passions and unlock their full potential, potentially changing the course of their lives.” See full story at chicagodefender.com

Nearly 9 Million People Enroll In Health Insurance For Working Families Last week, government officials announced that the number of people signing up for health insurance this open enrollment period on HealthCare.gov hit nearly 9 million. Consumers set a new record for weekly enrollment when, from December 10 to December 15, 4,143,968 people selected health insurance plans on HealthCare.gov. The previous high-water mark was 4,078,562 signing up during the week of December 13 to December 19, 2015. Following is the statement of Frederick Isasi, executive director of Families USA: “These strong enrollment numbers remind us how highly families in America value the private health insurance offered through marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act. Despite efforts by the Trump Administration to suppress enrollment – including cutting the enrollment window in half, slashing funding to provide in-person enrollment assistance, redirecting outreach money, shutting down HealthCare.gov on Sundays, and reducing the advertising budget by a startling 90 percent– families from across the nation overcame the hurdles put in their way and signed up for coverage at an unprecedented pace. “There is no reasonable justification for the administration cutting in half the time families had to enroll in coverage and slashing outreach to families. We applaud the nonprofit organizations and volunteers who educated consumers and helped them enroll, stepping-in and providing critical assistance after the administration’s decision to drastically reduce its own outreach efforts. We likely will never know how many millions of additional families would have benefited from health insurance if the administration had worked to help them enroll in the coverage and not worked against them. “Nearly 9 million people enrolled in marketplace coverage offered through HealthCare.gov. We urge President Trump and his Congressional allies to honor the will of the American people and abandon their efforts to undermine the ACA health coverage relied on by working families. Instead, lawmakers at the federal and state levels should focus on improving health and health care by expanding Medicaid in the states that have not yet done so, by helping more families afford their health insurance, and ensuring that the coverage they receive is comprehensive and high quality. We stand ready to partner with them in achieving these goals.” www.chicagodefender.com

Chicago Defender Year In Review Politics By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer

In a year marked with headline news, the Defender worked tirelessly to ensure its readership never missed a beat in 2017. More than 70 articles were considered before the Defender’s editorial staff narrowed down our top political selections of the year based on local, county, state and national headlines found in our pages and website this year. Elected officials, affordable housing, education funding, and more made up just the tip of the iceberg in terms of a few of the impactful stories that shaped the year of news in Chicago’s political landscape. Gov. Rauner Meets With Defender’s Editorial Board By Lee Edwards Posted on Feb. 17 Gov. Bruce Rauner paid the Defender’s office, 4445 S. King Dr., a visit for an exclusive interview with its editorial staff. The topics raised in the article were Chicago’s gun violence, education, criminal justice reform, and the Illinois Tollway Authority’s (ITA) efforts to increase diversity in its contractors and suppliers. On the topic of criminal justice reform, the state’s head official stated: “We have to change our criminal justice system. It shouldn’t be just about punishment, it shouldn’t be just about putting people in jail and throwing away the key,” said Rauner, who cited mental health and drug treatment as key to addressing recidivism. “We have to focus on what’s the cause of criminal behavior.” https://chicagodefender.com/2017/02/17/gov-rauner-meets-with-defenders-editorial-board/ Church vs. Business? How Churches and Businesses Resolved Conflicts Within Chicago’s Austin Community By Morgan Lee Posted February 15 Reporting on behalf of City Bureau, Morgan Lee tackled how the Austin neighborhood’s economics may be impacted by the presence of multiple local churches on a potentially vital commercial corridor, North Ave. It’s difficult to gauge what’s next to come given the hopes some have within Austin of turning the neighborhood into a bustling economic engine for the community. “The issue isn’t limited to foot traffic. Parking is also a sticking point, as are the liquor license restrictions on any business within 100 feet of a church. And since churches don’t pay property taxes, they don’t contribute to the local Tax Increment Financing district, which redistributes excess property tax revenue into community redevelopment funds, and which is supposed to be a tool for economic revitalization.” h t t p s : / / c h i c a g o d e f e n d e r. c o m / 2 017 / 0 2 / 15 / church-vs-business-conflicts-within-chicagos-austin-community/ Part 1: Chicago’s “Reverse Migration” Impacts the Black Community By Darryl Holliday Posted April 6, 2017 City Bureau co-founder/reporter Darryl Holliday wrote a gripping and detailed two-part piece about “reverse migration” and how Joliet has become a battleground in the affordable housing discussion. “Teresa Davis packed up her bags, boarded the Rock Island District Metra train with her kids and left Chicago THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

By Ashley Lisenby Posted April 19 Should African Americans be willing to support President Donald Trump? That was one of the major questions addressed in this view from the GOP side of politics in the African American community. “…Chicago lawyer Brunell Donald-Kyei, who said she felt disappointed by decades of Democratic leadership nationally and locally. She said she’s a product of CPS and grew up near her school, which makes the challenges it faces all the more personal. She has been a teacher at KIPP for a year but has been a teacher for a total of five years, with jobs in Oklahoma and Wisconsin.” ““How am I supposed to tell my students they are going to get a proper education when I can’t make that promise because the resources aren’t there?”” https://chicagodefender.com/2017/05/07/illinois-for-educational-equity-demand-funding-fix/ continued on page 4

CTA’s Commuters and the Homeless By Mary L. Datcher Posted May 18 A human crisis of the most vulnerable kind was magnified in this cover story. The intersection between Chicago’s homeless population and those using public transportation has long been an issue known to Chicagoans but here Datcher hits several key notes in that wildly untold narrative that’s still relevant. https://chicagodefender.com/2017/05/18/cta-commuters-and-chicagos-homeless-growing-concerns/ The Battle For Affordable Housing in Jefferson Park By Lee Edwards Posted June 8, 2017 Residents of Jefferson Park clashed with affordable housing advocates in the heart of the summer over a proposed mixed income 100 unit affordable housing development. The staging ground for this portion of the story took place at City Hall where concerns over implied racism from current Jefferson Parkers were raised. “Jefferson Park is among several northwest side Chicago communities to remain by-and-large predominantly White. According to a 2013 report by the Huffington Post, from 1920-2000, Jefferson Park remained over 90 percent White until 2000. The only communities that were still listed as 90 percent White were Edison Park, Norwood Park and Mount Greenwood in the southwest area of Chicago.” https://chicagodefender.com/2017/06/08/the-battle-for-affordable-housing-in-jefferson-park/ Do Our Black Children Matter? By Mary L. Datcher Posted June 21 Changing neighborhood demographics threatened not only the National Teachers Academy (NTA), 55 W. Cermak, but also call into question the direction of the neighborhood once known as the Near South Side’s class, color, and sensibilities for years to come. “In 2010, Alderman Pat Dowell, who represents the 3rd Ward, was an advocate on behalf of low-income residents fighting for the right of their children to stay within the school district boundaries and against South Loop Elementary takeover of NTA. Now, as the neighborhood has shifted more in diversity and with growing families, she feels it is time for change and compromise.” 4 December 27, 2017 - January 2, 2018

Rauner Signs Several Criminal Justice Bills, Blasts Racism By Mary L. Datcher Posted August 25 Multiple pieces of legislation reforming criminal justice in Illinois were signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner with several members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus represented to witness at the Safer Foundation location in North Lawndale. Rauner also responded to a hot button issue at the time, a racist cartoon, by saying, “…I do not endorse any form of racism.” “One of the bills signed, HB 3817 creates the Youth Opportunity and Fairness Act. Under current Illinois law, only three in 1,000 juvenile arrests are expunged. According to the governor’s office, this law would allow for a quicker and easier process for young people to have their records erased, would reduce the unlawful sharing of juvenile records.” https://chicagodefender.com/2017/08/25/gov-rauner-signs-several-criminal-justice-bills-blasts-racism/ One-on-One With Mayor Rahm Emanuel: School Funding, CPS Plans and Crime By Mary L. Datcher Posted October 11, 2017 With the repeal of the controversial sweetened beverage tax by the County Board Finance Committee (15-1), Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle hinted that cuts to the 2018 budget were looming. The repeal came after significant backlash over the summer from imposing a county-wide one cent per ounce tax on all sweetened beverages. “If you want good government, you have to pay for it,” says Preckwinkle. Year in Review: Chance the Rapper Holds It Down By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer/Arts & Entertainment Editor It has been a whirlwind year of ups and downs, joy and pain, triumphs and daily tribulations. Yet, many of us are still here and standing strong. As we review 2017, from a Chicago perspective—we understand national occurrences have affected us locally but hey, we love our beloved home despite what the little orange man in the White House says, right? Thank God for the arts. The importance of the arts is what fuels the soul of our being whether it’s music, theatre, film, visual art, comedy or the beauty of spoken word—it lights a burning flame in each of us. This is why evidence of maintaining and building STEM and arts related educational programming is essential to maintaining our public and private schools. No one could be a better poster child for bringing economic stimulation to our CPS schools than Chancellor Bennett, better known to us as Chance the Rapper. Chance has taken incredible strides for “putting his money where his mouth is” or in other words utilizing people’s money to make an incredible impact. A graduate of Jones College Prep High School, his nonprofit organization he formed with friends, SocialWorks, has raised nearly $5 million dollars for multiple CPS schools throughout the year. Prior to the New Year, SocialWorks made a bold and productive statement, hosting a free outdoor concert at the Petrillo Band stage entertaining hundreds of attendees the day before the presidential election. Without missing a beat, the 24-year-old led nearly 700 young people to the voting polls on foot, in telling style which reminded me very much of the scene in the film “Malcolm X” where Denzel Washington, with the flick of his finger, dismantled THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

the crowd from protesting in front of the police station. The scene was beautiful, and some are wondering, “Is this too much influence or power for one person to have?” Nope because without stating his political alliance with any one candidate—this young man encouraged his peers to take civic action in our duties as American citizens. Bennett kicked off the year at The Grammy’s by bringing home four awards and becoming that “it” kid that proved to other independent artists that crème rises to the top without the machine politics of a major record label. Then the award-winner made a bold announcement to donate the initial $1 million of his own money at Harper High School in response to a major shortfall as a result of the state budget stalemate; he showed a level of maturity beyond his years. This philanthropic move would invite other donors and corporations to step up to the plate, identifying schools that would be impacted the most in both Black and Brown communities. From Chicago Bulls, Google to Jewel Osco and others, Chance has created a movement out of “paying it forward” in the hippest sense. He said at his initial press conference at Harper High School, “As a parent and a proud CPS graduate, I’m committed to helping Chicago students have quality living experiences and a quality learning space. As an artist and After Schools Matter teacher, the arts are essential.... To ensure more students have access to the arts and enrichment education, I’m excited to announce in the collaboration with the Children’s First Fund—the New Chance Arts & Literacy Fund.” Growing up in Chatham, a Southside community of working class families—his parents, Ken and Lisa Bennett, both worked in local government. His father once worked for Mayor Harold Washington, then-Senator Barack Obama and for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. His mom, a business owner for years, eventually worked in community outreach for Attorney General Lisa Madigan on real estate www.chicagodefender.com

matters. Chance and his younger brother Taylor are both aware of the significant impact of having people that look like them as examples of success because they were raised by two individuals who exemplified this every day. In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Chance and Ken Bennett are on the advisory board for the DuSable Museum of African American History. Following in the footsteps of his musical idol, Kanye West, Chance was one of the main headline acts for Lollapalooza. This makes him the second Chicago rap artist to do so. A week later, he would lead the largest African American parade in the country, the Bud Biliken Parade, as its Grand Marshall—giving away over 20,000 backpacks filled with school supplies. Later, personally making trips to various nonprofit agencies on the West and Southside with the remaining 10,000 bags bringing a taste of celebrity at their doorsteps. Both President Obama and Michelle Obama recruited him for the Obama Foundation Summit in November to curate a special concert at Wintrust Arena. A guest at a White House before he left, President Obama acknowledged Chance’s impact on the arts and how he will be a major part of his Presidential Center’s programming. Yes, our publication like others have repeatedly featured this young’s man stellar achievements and contributed to the social media feed of his latest endeavors because he’s earned it. We named him our 2017 Newsmaker of the Year not because of his hit songs and his repeated appearances on SNL, but for what he has done with his fame and fortune—what he has done and continues to do for our people. Nothing is by “chance” or “fate,” but his works have proved he is called by God. Independent Music Chicago is the soul of Black music embodied by swag, skill and plenty of attitude. Almost in every genre, artists dominate and captivate audiences around the world— making Chicago a musical mecca for visitors. The Chicago Defender featured some of the best indie artists throughout the year and in our Chi Def Black Music Month supplement in June. Taylor Bennett has made some impressive moves and debuted his new project, Restoration of An American Idol, continued on page 6

traveling on tour with Tory Lanez. His announcement on twitter of his bisexuality was bold and gave many young people battling their own sexuality the courage to shed their fear. He immediately stepped out into his own spotlight and away from the glare of big brother, Chance the Rapper. Bennett’s mission to help homeless teens has helped organizations such as LaCasa Norte. Other featured artists making national moves are K’Valentine, The Boy Illinois, Solow, Ravyn Lanae, Lowdown Brass Band, Todd Dulaney, Jonathan McReynolds and Bump J. Our candid interviews included South Side natives Ty Money and 600 Breezy, who were gradually making a name for themselves before they both had to serve sentences for past charges. Antonio Valentino King, known as 600 Breezy, was full of hope and on the cusp of having a successful music career, touring with Drake—granted The Chicago Defender his last interview before he was retained in Iowa county corrections center the day after. Speaking candidly about the street hustle, he talks about why it’s important to use music as a legitimate way to help his family. He says, “My kids are number one. Everything I do, I do for them and my mom. It’s just family—family is important to me. My grandma saw me on the Billboard Awards and called me crying tears, screaming at the top of her lungs. I didn’t even win an award, I was just there, but I’m her baby. Family is the most important thing to me.” Film and Television If you didn’t know about Chicago outside of the mainstream media coverage, any one of the following reality shows represented Chicagoans. Premiering on Lifetime network, “Bringing Up Ballers” was an inside look at several mothers of middle school to high school students excelling in basketball. There are different things that make people special. We are products of our environment. There’s no way around it. You could be born to a drug addict but if you wind up being raised by a Harvard professor, you likely may end up doing something in that lane. Tupac’s mother being a Black Panther and the social arena that he was placed in as a child did influence him,” he said. Robert “Bobby” Sengstacke The Civil Rights activist was known for his “no holds barred” approach to enlightening audiences around the world on race relations, religion and health. His climb in the 1960’s as a stand-up comic soon rose as he replaced Irwin Corey at the infamous Playboy club in Chicago. His uncanny sense of humor spoke volumes of truth and his advocacy for a healthier lifestyle had thousands of people rushing to order his healthy supplement, The Formula Form X in the 1980’s which is now sold as Dick Gregory’s Caribbean Diet for Optimal Health. Robert Yancy Natalie Cole’s son passed at the age of 39. His body was found in his San Fernando Valley, Calif., apartment. Undisputed reports of Yancy’s untimely death indicate the legendary R&B singer’s son having a heart attack. September 2017 Pat Hill The former executive director of Chicago’s African American Police League lost her battle with cancer at Northwestern Hospital. Hill was outspoken on how African American officers are represented and having a voice among their White fellow officers. She was 66 years old. Simeon Wright, the cousin of Emmett Till, died at 74 due to complications from bone cancer. He was a witness to his cousin being kidnapped and later murdered that night by White men accusing the 14-year-old of whistling at a White woman. Till was visiting and staying with relatives in Mississippi on summer break from Chicago. October 2017 Fats Domino The New Orleans singer-songwriter, who earned his nickname “Fats” while starting out in the 1940s, came to prominence in the ensuing decades with producer Dave Bartholomew. The Creole singer rose to the top of the Billboard charts with “Ain’t That A Shame”, and a string of classic hits. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 1986 after consistently hitting the Top 40 charts in his career and establishing New Orleans’ rock ‘n’ roll spirit. Other prominent names in entertainment who made transitions included comedian/actor Charlie Murphy (older brother to Eddie Murphy); Jazz singer/actress Della Reese, who captured our hearts from CBS television series “Touched By An Angel,” and theater/television actor Earle Hyman, who played everyone’s favorite granddad on “The Cosby Show.”

South Side Twins Poised For The Ivy League By Lee Edwards Defender Contributing Writer The Clinkscales twins Darrius and DeVon are the latest example of academic excellence to blossom from the South Side of Chicago as both brothers are set to attend Ivy League institutions in the fall. Darrius, the elder of the two, is heading to the University of Pennsylvania while DeVon is off to Cornell University. Darrius explained his decision centered around schools that excelled in STEM related majors. Stanford, Boston University, and Penn were among his top choices. He said he’s loved math dating back to kindergarten. He said he’ll focus on math and engineering classes. DeVon said he was looking at schools with “animal- based” programs with an eye toward being a veterinarian when considering his school choices. He said Cornell's animal science curriculum caught his eye, but the school’s overall ranking pushed it over the top. The impact of their respective acceptance letters is not lost on the young men. DeVon said he was “proud” that he and his brother would be the first in their family to go to college. Looking ahead to their post-collegial futures, Darrius said they want to make sure they’re not just working for money, thanks to their parents’ influence. “One thing our parents like to tell us is, ‘don’t work for your money, let your money work for you,’” said Darrius. “It can’t be just about money, we want to do something because we like to do it.” The Clinkscales did not purposely select different schools from one another but rather followed their own paths. “We weren’t planning on not going to the same college,” said DeVon. “We were saying that if we ended up at the same college, then we ended up at the same college; but the main point was to look at the college that we wanted to go to.” The hashtag #BlackExcellence was on DeVon’s mind as soon as he found out he and his brother were accepted into Ivy League schools. “If you look on social media, you can see there are a lot of Black people being accepted into these Ivy Leagues and these really high performing schools, and I think we are adding to that,” said DeVon. The Clinkscales are enrolled at Noble Academy, 1443 N. Ogden Ave. The twins commute from their home in the Gresham neighborhood to Noble via the “El” on the Red Line from 87th St. to the North/Clybourn station, then walk a few blocks over to where the school is located. Lauren Boros, principal and founder of Noble Academy, noted the Clinkscales are ranked among her top students. She was complimentary of Darrius and DeVon’s contributions to the school beyond academics. “They’re truly special here and leading the pack,” said Boros. “Their absence will be felt, but I think the best part is they’re going to go out in the world and make a stamp on Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania like they did here, and then hopefully in five years, I will be hiring them to be teachers here.” The Clinkscales are well aware of the perception Chicago carries across the nation and are proud to combat any negative stereotypes associated with the South Side. “You have really good people in Chicago, and I feel as for me as someone from Chicago, especially from the South Side of Chicago, I feel our going to these schools is showing people they’re wrong,” said DeVon. “Chicago is a good place. Just because you’re seeing all the bad things, doesn’t mean there’s not good things in it.” Boros said Noble’s senior class consists of 119 students. She said Noble Academy has students from 47 8 December 27, 2017 - January 2, 2018

PRAISE Workforce and Career: Real-Life Help 2018 – The Year of Lemonade By Karin Norington-Reaves 12 Voices For most Chicagoans, January 28, 1986, went down in history as the day of the ticker tape parade welcoming home the Chicago Bears as Superbowl XX champions. I remember it well, not only because of the Bears, but because it was my first day of work ever—and I was late! Karin I was so busy trying Norington-Reaves to watch as much of the parade as possible that I had broken a cardinal rule of work—punctuality. I was late for my first day as a cashier at a neighborhood grocery store. My classmate had told his boss how reliable I was and that I was looking for my first job. The owner, Ron, a tall, round-faced cheerful man, had welcomed Mike’s reference. Ron gave me a firm scolding as I confessed that I’d been watching the Bears parade. (At least I was honest). He chuckled and said “Welcome kiddo. You have to be on time!” I can’t recall having ever been late again. I was 16 years old. That day began 5 years of life lessons,

friendships, and personal and professional development. Aside from balancing my drawer, I learned what it meant to be in service to others, responsibility, how to manage time, and effective communication. I interacted with people of different races, cultures, ages and educational levels. And I played every role in the store from cashier to bagger, deli attendant, closer, assistant manager, stocker and delivery girl. When I left for college, Ron let me return during winter and spring breaks to earn extra cash. Today, more than 30 years later, I serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, the non-profit organization that oversees the nation’s second largest federally-designated workforce investment area. My key responsibilities include managing a network of workforce development organizations that addresses business needs, while preparing individuals for, and connecting them to, career opportunities. With a budget of more than $70 million and a 70-member team, The Partnership serves tens of thousands of people every year through more than 50 agencies under our umbrella. The Kingdom Kees of Marriage: Designed to Be Different: PART TWO By Quiana Kee 12 Voices My husband and I are different. But opposites attract, right? When I’m weak, he’s strong. When he lacks, I abound. In theory, this complementary situation should work. In practice, it’s HARD WORK! Let me explain. My husband is the spiritual head of our household. He Quiana and Reggie speaks blessings over Kee our family and wages spiritual warfare on our behalf in prayer. When he hears a Word from the Lord, he runs with it in obedience. He is a man of FAITH and ACTION! And I am a woman of FAITH...with A PLAN and then ACTION! I petition God for wisdom and knowledge regularly so the steps of any plan can be ordered in His Word. Because I have this extra step of planning, it can be viewed as a lack of faith and an impediment to action. I don’t intend to be a stumbling block to any instructions or ideas my husband receives from the Lord. But when he gets an idea, I want to know more! My mind works very quickly with the questions...how?....why?.... when?....what? As I ask these questions, I’m mentally formulating a plan. To my husband, it sounds like every question is poking holes in THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

an attempt to burst his bubble and abort the idea. I have the same questions for God about the ideas He’s given my husband to “MOVE” or to “GO” or to “QUIT.” Basically, what is the PLAN? Proverbs 21:5 - The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty. I, too, have a relationship with God. He speaks to me during my prayer time and as I study His Word. When God delivers a life-altering directive, I like to meditate on it and seek wisdom for a plan first. With obedience in mind, I pose questions to God because I don’t want to mess up in my execution of His Word. The extra step of planning is for the purpose of getting the ACTION right. It’s hard work to be “one flesh” when I feel the need to plan and my husband feels the need to act! Our oneness begins to strain in two different directions. He resents me for slowing things down. I’m upset with him for moving too fast. One summer morning in 2015, my husband received a Word from the Lord to “QUIT” his job. I was not in favor of it. There wasn’t another job or another stream of income to replace what he would walk away from. Although we prayed together in that moment, no final plans were discussed around this life-changing decision. By the end of the same day, he took action to end his employment without my knowledge. For me, resentment set in, anger arose, trust was breached. continued on page 16

By Corliss Garner 12 Voices We made it! Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to welcome 2018. What are your New Year’s resolutions? Save more? Spend less? Pay off debt? Invest in the stock market? ImCorliss Garner prove your credit score? All of the above? Studies show only 8 percent of people persevere long enough to slay their annual promises to themselves. Rather than getting out of formation before you even start, let’s figure out how to make some lemonade out of these annual lemons. #QueenBeyAllDay Reviewing our financial lives and setting financial goals is not just a top of the year exercise. To achieve our goals, staying focused on money management dos and don’ts have to be priority all year long. Everyone has areas in their financial life that are sound and strong. Conversely, there are likely areas that require a bit more focus, attention and dedication. How do we start the year off on the right foot and not feel like a failure by January 15? I have a few ideas. Believe in yourself! This sounds hokey and touchy feely (I can see your eye rolls), but don’t underestimate the importance. I firmly believe that better money management is more a function of how we THINK about money and less about what we DO with money. Thoughts drive behavior. Behavior drives action. Action drives results. When you have that “(wo) man in the mirror” meeting with yourself, and finally DECIDE to FOCUS on your financial life and truly BELIEVE your goals are attainable, you will see positive change. No question. Time to get your mind right! What are you working with? Establish a baseline TODAY! You must take inventory of your financial life. Do you have a handle on your monthly cash inflows and outflows? Do you know the value of your assets (your home, 401K, business interests) and how much you have in liabilities (mortgage, student loans, credit card debt)? Have you pulled your credit report? Side note: you can pull your free annual credit report at www.annualcreditreport. com. Have you completed – dare I say it – a budget? It will be difficult to pave a road forward without knowing exactly where you are today. Sure, it can be very scary to have your entire fi-

Where do you want to be? Now that you know what you are working with, you can begin thinking about where you want to be. This is the slippery slope. Some of us will say I want to improve my credit score by 300 points in 30 days!! No my friends. Eminent failure. Here is where you set incremental, attainable goals that keep you encouraged and moving down YOUR path to financial success. Can you start an emergency fund by setting aside $10 a month? Can you invest an additional 1 percent in your 401K? Can you pay an extra $50 per month toward that credit card bill? Try a supplemental income opportunity? Can you reduce your shopping bill by 25 percent per month? Lots of ways to slice it, but the goal is to start somewhere. You will feel amazing and encouraged when you start to accomplish those goals. Who gon’ check you boo? Your accountability partner. I am much better at making it to gym when I have a friend waiting for me (read: holding me accountable). Find a partner who will keep you focused and encourage you along this journey. Greatness is never achieved alone. It takes a village. Dinner With Santa On Thursday, December 21, 120 children and their parents from the Bronzeville community, including families from the Center For New Horizons Day Care, attended a Dinner With Santa at Provident Hospital of Cook County located at 500 E. 51st Street. Dinner was sponsored by the Black McDonald’s Operators of Chicago and Northwest Indiana and included a chicken nugget happy meal, juice box and toy for everyone. In addition, more than 250 toys and coats were donated by Provident employees and SocialWorks, Chance the Rapper’s Youth Empowerment Charity. “We are grateful to have so many community partners to make this event a success,” stated Tanya Seaton, MBA, CMPE, Operating Officer of Provident. “This is our second time hosting what we plan to make an annual event, giving back to our community and future leaders.” The event was held from 4-6 p.m. with children having a double treat. They were able to shake hands and play

games with Ronald McDonald, eat their happy meal and then select two or three toys from Santa to take home. Associate Program Director Dr. Whitney Lyn, MD, Attending, Family Medicine, spoke to the parents and children letting them know how to eat healthy and cook for the holidays while still having a great time. “I have young children your age and I know how hard it is to stay away from the sweets especially during the holidays, but healthy snacks can still include raw carrots, apples, pears, and oranges, which are sweet at this time of year,” stated Dr. Lyn. Highlighting that children and parents are her passion, she also encouraged parents to get their flu shots. Provident Hospital of Cook County is an affiliate of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System. The John Sengstacke Ambulatory Health Center, located on the 6th and 7th floor of the hospital, is open 6 days a week including Saturdays. Pediatric appointments can be made by calling 312-572-2900.

Red Velvet: The Big Debate

Dion Johnstone as (Ira Aldridge) By Brenda and Rick McCain Let’s Play! In the year of 1833, riots erupted in London’s streets regarding abolishing slavery throughout the British colonies, and debates were ignited concerning a young African American Shakespearean actor by the name of Ira Aldridge. He was a man who was faced with struggles to achieve progress in a world of racism and prejudice. “Red Velvet” is a play written by Brenda and Rick Lolita Chakrabarti to evoke discussion regarding diversity and incluMcCain sion. It is based on an actual person by the name of Ira Aldridge (Dion Johnstone). The play is set in Lodz, Poland, in the year of 1867 where we get to meet Ira in his theater dressing room where a reporter (Annie Purcell) determined to get her story coerces the now 60-year-old actor to look back upon his acting career. The audience is transported back in time 34 years with Ira Aldridge to the turbulent backstage of Theatre Royal where it all began. One crucial decision and an opportunity of a lifetime sent shockwaves through the streets of London in the nineteenth century because theater manager Pierre Laporte (Greg Matthew Anderson) asked Ira to play the role of Othello. Previously, Othello had been played by world-renowned Edmund Kean, who was the most excellent actor of his age until he collapsed on stage. Fellow cast members did not want to work with Ira Aldridge in fear of how London would react to his performance. Charles Kean, the son of Edmund (Michael Hayden), called for practical reasoning and asked that Pierre place him in the prominent role; however, being persuaded by Pierre and with the backing of Edmund himself, the actors agreed that the show must go on and decided to continue with Aldridge as the lead. Adverse reactions from London’s theater critics THE CHICAGO DEFENDER

Chicago Shakespeare Theatre Presents RED VELVET By Lolita Chakrabarti Directed By Gary Griffin December 1, 2017 –January 21, 2018 emerged quickly because they thought Othello was billed as promoting the abolition of slavery, which was heavily debated in Parliament at the time. Outraged by a Black man playing a role of a White man, appalled by his aggressive nature and the touching of a White woman, the theater leaders tell Pierre that Aldridge needs to be removed and the theater will go dark (no performance) for the first time in centuries. The friendship of Pierre and Aldridge becomes strained while Aldridge tries to convince Pierre to fight with him to force them to continue with him as the lead, however, Pierre becomes infuriated that Ira never listened to his advice. The play continues with Aldridge, this once trailblazing actor, who is now a feebly sick older man, reminiscing about what could have been. Ira Aldridge was indeed a very accomplished actor performing in plays around the world, however, he has been forgotten as a great actor of his time. This is due primarily because of theaters in New York refused to allow Black actors in the 1800’s to play prominent roles, so Aldridge relocated back to London hoping the world of the stage would be open to him. He was again saddened to find that London also closed its doors to Black actors and he was forced to take roles in the British provinces and Eastern Europe. Dion Johnstone plays the lead role of Ira Aldridge in Red Velvet and he was magnificent. His overwhelming yet passionate presence moves across the stage like a graceful swan that elegantly draws your attention to his skillful theatrical greatness. He captured the very essence of Aldridge to where you believe you have traveled back into history to witness this dramatic performance and strugwww.chicagodefender.com

gles of this gifted actor. Chaon Cross was exceptional in her role as Ellen Tree. Her wit and strong will amalgamated remarkably with Johnstone. She is a natural talent that quickly transforms into any role, which made her great as the legendary Ellen Tree. We must also pay homage to Greg Matthew Anderson and his masterful performance of Pierre LaPorte, who is making his Chicago Shakespeare debut, as well as Annie Purcell as Halina. She was very good and funny. We can only hope to see more of her acting skills in Chicagoland theaters. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Tiffany Renee Johnson, who played Connie, and is another Shakespeare newcomer people should notice. Her small part in this play should not be overlooked for she has leader role talent. Award-winning director Gary Griffin returns to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre with a cast of performances that brings a genuine realism of acting at Theatre Royal in an intimate setting for the audience. Griffin has produced such great plays as “The Color Purple” and “The Apple Tree” and is a ten-time Jeff Award winner, and he hasn’t disappointed us with “Red Velvet.” We highly recommend going to see Chicago Shakespeare’s “Red Velvet.” The cast includes Annie Purcell (Halina) Jurgen Hooper (Casimir) Roderick Peeples (Terence) Dion Johnstone (Ira Aldridge) Tiffany Renee Johnson (Connie) Bri Sudia (Betty Lovell) Roderick Peeples (Bernard Ward) Jurgen Hooper (Henry Forester) Michael Hayden (Charles Kean) Chaon Cross (Ellen Tree) Greg Matthew Anderson (Pierre LaPorte) Annie Purcell (Margaret Aldridge) December 27, 2017 - January 2, 2018 11

City.Life.Style In the MIX: Chicagoans Strap Up For Safety, Top NYE Parties For Adults and Kids By Mary L. Datcher Defender Senior Staff Writer As we’re still digesting our Christmas dinner, jingling those last coins for 2017 and praying some will be left for the “first of the month” bills— folks are gearing up for New Year’s Eve festivities. Whether you’re running deep in the streets with your friends, popping bottles in the club or having a house party with family and loved ones—it’s a celebration of making it through another year and looking forward to a new one. The one thought that runs Mary L. Datcher through our minds is “safety first.” With the hike in carjackings throughout the Chicagoland region, it has become increasingly stressful. Most of these crimes have been committed by teens and it’s becoming a dangerous game of Russian roulette on both ends. The number of carry and conceal applications have hiked this year as citizens prepare to strap up, clip on and take aim. This means someone’s thoughtless and troublesome child will be a victim in their wrong choice of committing a crime. For gun control advocates, this is a scary thought as more guns flood the market and law-abiding residents are fearful. Meanwhile, who wants to live life in fear? So, let’s take a deep breath, pay attention to our surroundings and don’t lose our lives over material possessions. Chef Showcase: Danny Bullock By The Black Foodies Chicago’s restaurant scene is vibrant and one of the best in the country. With a bevy of world-class restaurants, naturally, Chicago also boasts an eclectic group of world-class chefs. From James Beard Award winner Rick Bayless to Stephanie Izard, winner of “Top Chef: Season 4,” to Grant Achatz whose restaurant has been named “Best Restaurant in the World” by Elite Traveler Magazine, Chicago certainly isn’t the second city when it comes to great chefs. The culinary scene is fiercely competitive in Chicago, so chefs have to be on their “A” game to become and stay relevant. Today’s dining consumer has too many innovative choices to subject themselves to an inferior dining experience. With that said, allow us to introduce you to the new kid on the Chicago culinary block – 27-year-old, Chef Danny Bullock. Chef Danny originally aspired to be a professional drummer when he played drums in his father’s church. Luckily for us, he has taken his creativity and showmanship into the kitchen. Chef Danny’s culinary artistry is unmatched, and his attention to detail leaves a visually stunning presentation for the diner. A former cook at Trump Hotel & Tower Chicago, Chef Danny’s concept is, “No need to go downtown for a good time.” Chef Danny is now a private chef who can cook for two or two hundred. He also provides meal prep for the week. Anything food, he and his staff can provide. We attended a private tasting where Chef Danny prepared a three-course meal. The first course consisted of Maine lobster bisque with grilled cornbread, a chive and sherry cream and fine herbs. The second course featured Amish chicken, prepared two ways, with a roasted butternut squash puree, bok choy, Belgium endive, crispy chicken skin and a mushroom jus. Dessert consisted of a milk chocolate sponge cake, fresh strawberries with a cookie crumble, and a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Chef Danny’s lobster bisque is not traditional. Bisque we have previously sampled were usually tasty but one note, meaning no fresh component was added to the dish. Not so with Chef Danny’s lobster bisque. Rainbow carrot strips, smoked charred onions, pickled shallots, celery hearts, shaved celery ribbons, bell peppers, and dehydrated tomato skins are all delicately sliced and placed in a bowl with butter poached lobster. The hot silky bisque is then added and what you have is Flavortown, USA. Chef Danny’s lobster bisque has a consistency between that of a broth and a roux, with generous chunks of butter-poached Maine lobster scattered throughout the bowl (yum! yum!). What really sets Chef Danny’s rendition of lobster bisque apart are his fresh veggie garnishes. The aforementioned veggies add a texture and freshness that take this dish to the higher heights of lobster bisque. The crouton-like texture of the grilled cornbread allows it to absorb the bisque for an extra bite of deliciousness. The Van Gogh Lobster Bisque 14 December 27, 2017 - January 2, 2018

Danny Bullock artistry of Chef Danny was very apparent with our second course. The dish was breathtakingly beautiful! This is where Chef Danny’s attention to detail comes shining through. It was love at first sight. The Amish chicken was seasoned with salt and pepper and pan seared to lock in the juices, then oven roasted until almost done. The chicken was finished stovetop with a butter, garlic and fresh thyme basting. We never had yard bird that tender and juicy. The roasted butternut squash was expertly executed and tasted like grandma’s sweet potatoes. The bok choy and mushroom jus added an earthy element to this well-crafted dish. Amish Chicken The crispy chicken skin was like eating a poultry potato chip and added that crunchy texture that we all seem to enjoy. Very good eating, to say the least. The third course featured a mouth-watering milk chocolate sponge cake served with dark chocolate mousse and a caramel cookie crumble. Fresh strawberries marinated in orange juice and vodka joined the party, along with French vanilla ice cream. Once again, Chef Danny did not disappoint. The cake and mousse were sweet, but when eaten with the marinated strawberries, everything was balanced out. The cookie crumble added just the right amount of crunch. The French vanilla ice cream tied all of the inwww.chicagodefender.com

early on, I was on a show with Scott Baio and I think I was feeling myself. I quit my job, and everybody runs and do what you want, and I was really feeling myself. I flew my dad out there, he and my grandmother, and he didn’t like what he saw. I was getting Hollywood and he came and said, ‘Let me tell you something little girl, a hundred girls can do what you do — you ain’t no different,’ said Shephard.” Social justice took front and center this year with documentaries making their mark recognizing major milestones in America’s racial divide. Filmmaker Raoul Peck’s “I AM Not Your Negro” highlights prolific writer James Baldwin’s words documenting his viewpoints on race relations in the 1960’s. Peck does an incredible job delivering a compelling narrative of Baldwin’s timeless analogy that resonates in current times. The film “LA 92” highlighting America’s civil unrest after 25 years brought back so many memories that captured the country as millions watched six LA police officers be released free of charges from beating Rodney King. The documentary recounted the rage and disappointment felt by African Americans and the mounting racial tension between the community and the Los Angeles Police Department. Theatre Some of our best and brightest talent hails from the theatre community and many make Chicago their stop and often their home. Thanks to our wonderful columnists Brenda and Rick McCain, who provide weekly theatrical reviews of productions all around the city. In addition to the “Let’s Play!” reviews, our features also highlight interviews with the stars of some of the productions as well. Broadway in Chicago and the stellar hit musical “Hamilton” continues to entertain audiences and educate thousands of CPS students with one-on-one panel discussions from the cast members. The program is great because it allows students to create their own versions of the production’s songs and perform them in front of an audience of their peers as well as cast members. Students are bused in, treated to a brown bag lunch and receive a complimentary ticket to see the show.

Tupac “The Phantom of the Opera’s” star Derrick Davis talked about taking on the lead role that opened up the doors for other Black actors. Singer and songwriter Guy Lockard starred in “Chicago” at the Drury Lane in Oakbrook. “Five Guys Named Moe” was billed as one of the best musicals of the year along with the return of “Motown,” which continues to showcase new talent singing catalog hits. Playwright Charles Smith teamed up with theatre director Chuck Smith to produce “Objects in the Mirror” at the Goodman Theatre, a rendition of Charles Smith’s original production. A longtime director and former actor in Chicago theatre community, Chuck Smith admitted there is no particular style to his passion and work. “I don’t know my style. I just work the same way. The way I put a show together was the same way I was taught at Loop College. With Sid-

Chuck Smith: The Goodman Theatre’s Creative Director ney Daniels, who taught me, this is how you mount a show. Whenever I directed a show, I just followed the steps he took. You do this first and then you do that. That’s what I do,” he says.

ment, labor market trends, and the industries driving our national and local economies. Despite the national message that unemployment numbers are falling, I know all too well the realities of communities throughout Chicagoland and the nation. African-American and Hispanic unemployment is more than 10 times that of our White counterparts depending upon age, community or gender. Young people between the ages of 18 and 24 currently experience unprecedented unemployment and disconnection from post-secondary education—an international pandemic. While everyone need not go to college, the overwhelming majority of jobs now (and increasingly in the future) require post-secondary training. And, although many factors contribute to the desta-

bilization of our communities, none is as potent as the lack of access to a stable income (preferably along a career pathway) with which to support a family. When I reflect on the years I spent at the neighborhood store, I am often struck by the core lesson—no matter your title, there is a value and dignity associated with the act of working. I strive every day to create and amplify opportunities for everyone to have that experience. Would you like to see a specific work-related topic discussed here? E-mail AboutWork@workforceboard. org. God, in His infinite wisdom, knew our marriage would go through this test. In this test, we realized that we lost sight of the value that the other person brings to our marriage. My husband challenges me to grow and step out on FAITH to please God. I challenge him to diligently SEEK the wisdom of God to receive how and when to make that step. Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Through it all, love, forgiveness, and repentant hearts have prevailed. Over the past two years since my husband’s last leap of faith, he has let me know that he gets it now. He no longer resents my need to have a plan of action. His resentment has transformed to commitment--commitment to ensure we seek God’s wisdom for a plan and take action in agreement with one another. While pushing into new territory is a nec-

essary part of our faith walk, there is nothing wrong with going back to God to seek more detail beyond the initial “GO.” Marriage needs what each spouse has to offer to fulfill God’s purpose for the union. Our contributions are different, but both are essential. Kingdom Kees of Marriage: •Be a student of your spouse (1 Peter 3:7) •Appreciate what your spouse brings to the table (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) •Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) •Trust God (Proverbs 3:5-6) Reggie and Quiana Kee have known each other for over 20 years and were married in 2004. #TheBIGS Takes a Look Back at Some of the Year’s Biggest Headlines in Chicago Sports By Terrence Tomlin & Eugene McIntosh Sports by #TheBIGS Rick Hahn Da God At the beginning of the year, not only had baseball on the South Side become an embarrassment, on the other side of town, the Cubs were fresh off of shaking the biggest drought in sports history when they won the 2016 World Series Championship for the first time in 108 years, officially making the White Sox the forgotten baseball team in Chicago. But Rick Hahn wasn’t having none of that. The White Sox general manager started what became a complete overhaul of talent in the White Sox organization. Fan favorites like Chris Sale, Adam Eaton, Todd Frazier and Jose Quintana all were given the boot via trades as the keys to the org were given to young players and prospects like Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito. These moves helped restore faith in the fanbase and Rick Hahn solidified a reputation of not being the only baseball GM in town afraid to bust moves ala his counterpart Theo Epstein. Its safe to say that the #SouthSideOnTheRise. The Butler Finds A New Home For years fans have been clamoring at Bulls management to pick a lane. Are they trying to win now? Or are they going to tear it down and rebuild it? In June fans finally got their answer when they traded self-proclaimed leader of the team Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In return the Bulls received guards Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine and the No. 7 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, which the Bulls used to select Lauri Markkanen. The Bulls currently reside at the bottom of the league standings but a dive-free locker room is a step in the right direction for the residents of the “Madhouse on Madison.” Aww Snap! The Bears Have Themselves A Quarterback! In April, the Chicago Bears swapped picks with 49ers to select quarterback from North Carolina Mitch Trubisky. Chicago traded the No. 3 pick, a 3rd round pick, a 4th round pick and a 2018 3rd round pick to move up. The rookie quarterback had already reached the mythical level of “last name only” status before he even took the first snap of his career. Trubisky. That’s the name that every Bears fan is hoping they see behind center for years to come, effectively cleansing their memory of the false prophets that came before him. After a plethora (30 to be exact) of quarterbacks we’d love to forget, the Bears finally have something they’ve never had…a franchise quarterback. Bears Link Arms in unity against police brutality, tell Trump to kick rocks In September, the President stirred up a storm of backlash with an attempt to silence professional athletes by suggesting that NFL owners fire players who have chosen to protest police brutality and injustice in this country by

If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!” said Trump via Twitter. Here in Chicago, fans of a usually politically quiet Bears locker room were left wondering if the vibrations of counter actions against the president’s tweets would reach Soldier Field. Bears Captain Akiem Hicks stepped to the plate and gave a solid response by saying, “I think that it goes against a lot of the rights that we hold dear and the rights that we fight for as citizens in America. I don’t really appreciate it, but it’s where we’re at as a country right now, and it’s where our leadership is. I’m no activist and I’m not standing at

the forefront of any movement, but I will say that you want to be respected and you want to be appreciated for what you do, and you want to be allowed the basic human rights that we all deserve.” The Phillips Wildcats Bring The 5A State Championship Back To Bronzeville In a time where football programs across CPS are in a crisis as they face record low participation, the Phillips Wildcats continue to solidify their reputation as a high school football powerhouse in Illinois as they brought home their second state championship in three years in November. Owning an undefeated record (14-0) the Wildcats beat Dunlap HS (13-1), 33-7 and the 5a State Championship is back home where it belongs…in Bronzeville.
