Vaatsalya Doctor Treats Rare Hair Eating Disorder E. Naveen Kumar

VT Correspondent, Hanamkonda

Two years ago, 11 year old Suchismita (name changed) suffered from severe stomach pain and continuous green vomiting. Her condition was treated for a short time by medicines. Recently, her condition worsened again with the same symptoms. Unable to get relief for their daughter after visiting various hospitals, Suchismita’s parents brought her to

Vaatsalya Hospital in Vizianagram. At surgery, the child’s small intestine was found to be completely filled with clusters of human hair. Hair amounting to a total length of 1 meter was removed by opening the small intestine at multiple places. The appendix was found to be inflamed with hair in it hence appendectomy was also done. When asked again, the parents revealed, that the child had a habit of eating hair (both of

self and others). This condition is medically known as Trichotillomania with Trichophagia (an irresistible desire to eat hair) which results in entire intestines being filled with hair or trichobezoars (a disease known as Rapunzel Syndrome). Dr. Renu Kumar said, “This is an extremely rare case. The child will undergo psychiatric consultation and behavior modification counseling to avoid any repeat incidents”. -1-

word, creating words out of random letters; “Clay Modeling”, where employess created miniature models out of clay. The feedback we received from all the hospitals conducting these activities was overwhelming. The employees felt it was a refreshing break from the mundane everyday activities and that the activities energized them to perform their work better. As put by one of our Human Resource Executive, after the first activity, “These activities really work and the change

noticed in employee behaviour and work behaviour is very evident. It is a great pleasure to see them happy and enjoying their work. We feel glad that we helped that happen.” All our employees are part of a 15 minute morning huddle involving all the department heads. They discuss issues, situations and recognitions of the previous day; and the tasks each of them have for the day ahead. All the employees are appreciative of this huddle as it helps them connect with employees from other departments and understand their difficulties and job roles. These discussions also help them understand the hardships that each of them faces and collectively think of ways to overcome them.
