1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

POINT/LINE/PLANE

MASS

FRAME AND INFILL

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE This exercise requires to make a journey to present the idea of Point/Line/Plane. Point/Line/Plane is about the progressive relations or about points evolving to lines and folding a plane to see a line.So I tried to create a journey for people to understand how point develop to line and how line develop to plane.

Precedents

As we can see, the faรงade of William Barak Building composed by several planes which based on different lines. These different lines actually are negative spaces carved into the balconies to create shadows. I like this William Barak Building because architect deal with the relationship between line and plane uniquely. Therefore, other connotations and meanings are displayed beyond one building itself.

The rows of small windows could be the point element as well as a part of the wall which could be plane element.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL This exercise is to design a structure based on cubes using the theme of frame and infill. We are asked to draw and make model to show understanding of frame and infill. I am very interested in the relationship between frame and infill and focus on how to combine them well.

1.3 MASS This exercise is to asked to design a journey or space undergroud to give people a sense of mass by drawings, In my point of view, mass could make a sense of heaviness dar and silence, so I preferto use stone and concrete to creat large construction with less light to show the sense of mass.

Precedents

The center of the main building is divided into three parts – the Main Plaza, South Plaza and Presidential Plaza. Besides, the exterior of the building is huge walls deeply recessed by porticoes and large openings of regular geometric shapes which is simple and striking. What mentioned above emphasize a senses of massive.

The main wall of Phoenix Financial center is constructed by concrete. It is facing southeast, showing the “punchcard design. The concrete make a volume which looks like a large rampart that give me a sense of mass.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND-A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETS

22

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

23

From site visit I know this island is surrounded by highway which means the island may suffer from traffic noise. In my point of view, secrets should keep in somewhere quiet to avoid disturb. Therefore, I find vegetation on the island could be helpful to cut down noise. What’s more, I would like to set my space at a flat area. So I consider the topography of the island and find a place where like a highland of the island. What’s more, thie visitor’s track is also one of important aspects to think about. Even the project is to design a place for keeping secrets, but it dose not mean the place need to locate at somewhere in the corner and hard to find. So I take the visitor’s track into considertation to find a place more accessiable for visitors. Imagine a secret could be kept in a place where is easy for people to approach to, it could tell the design could keep secrets very well! It’s a comparison!

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH

27

Original Concept My design could be divided into three main parts. The first part is undergroud. The idea is inspired by beehive. I use 6 interior walls to divided a regular Hexagan into 4 small spaces. So at first time I want use these small room to keep secrets. The second part is a hollow column on the groud with a spiral stair in it. I think about how to make the journey in the column for people to keeping secrets. the last part is above the column and in the air. It is a cube area which is enclosed. I start to add special features to it and make the cube area could keep secrets especially for children.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The idea of this underground room is inspired by what I learnt from mass exercise. In mass exercise, large concrete constructions and light are used together to provide a sense of mass. Mass always give people a feeling of heavy and silence which I think is quiet similar to the feelings when keeping secrets. The skylight use toughened glass which could provide light for underground and won’t influence people’s activity above the ground. This idea is inspired by Melbourne school of design.

The color glass roof is inspired by frame and infill exercise. The color glass roof could give a perfect visual effect for people especially in a small room. Therefore , it could attract people’ attention and make people in deep thinking to approach to keep secrets. It is quiet interesting that children could identify them.

3.0 REFLECTION Frome the study of earth studio in this semester, the most important thing I learnt is how to develop my desing thinking by doing exercise and how to apply these thinking in doing a project. In the first half of this semester, I leant three important architectural concepts which are related to POINT/LINE/PLANE, MASS AND FRAME AND INFILL. By doing exercise, I learnt from precedent and developed my onw thinking toward those concepts. In the second half of this semester, I applied above architectural concepts in making my own project. I really love this experience because this process include how to learn and how to use. It is really practical. From earth studio, I also improved my design skills. For example, the skills of drawing and making physical and digital model are reuqired all the time. To be honest, this used to be a big challange for me because I was not good at these skills. In this case, I got trouble in telling others my thinking and could not present my project clearly. So presentation is where my design are not good enough and still need to improve. In the future, I will keep focus on practicing my design thinking as well as improve my design skills. Last but not least, i enjoy every parts of earth sudio and appreciate the efforts and helps from lectures and my tutor.
