ABOUT THE PLAY The murder of a woman named Maureen Lyon is broadcasted from the radio in Monkswell Manor. The place is recently converted to a guest house and run by a young couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston. After hosting all the booked guests (Christopher Wren, Mrs. Boyle, Major Metcalf and Miss Casewell) and one unexpected guest(Mr.Paravicini), Mollie gets a call from the police. Shortly afterwards, Detective Sergeant Trotter arrives and informs the group that he believes the murderer in Mrs. Lyon's case is on the way to the hotel due to the note left at the crime scene. When Mrs. Boyle is strangled to death, they realize that the murderer is already there. Ten minutes later, the investigation held by Trotter puts everyone into suspect. To prevent the third murder from happening, Trotter asks people in the house to reenact the second murder. Eventually, the murderer who is beyond everyone's expectation shows up but fails to make the third-kill. By tradition, the killer's identity could only be the secret between the play and the audience.
ABOUT LIGHTING DESIGN The setting of the play is in a snowstorm which led me to create a strong contrast between the warmth inside the guest house and the freezing-coldness outside the window. In addition to the fireplace and lamps on stage, I also took the top wash as key light in the room. In order to create an old-time and rustic atmosphere, I choose Chocolate colour filter as the wash color. I had never seen a snowstorm ; therefore, I did lots of research by watching videos and pictures, and asked some of my friends who had experiences. Besides the realistic snowing scene, I visualized the inner side of the plot by using branch gobo patterns and mixed color filters in different scene. To realize the fire, I used non-theatrical lights: flame lights and LED light strips, which turned out to have a good condition. Creating natural lights is my priority and by using different kinds of lighting materials, I have a greater amount of opportunities to explore the possibility of lighting design.

The materials of the fireplace: I put flame lights in the middle of the pile of firewood which is surrounded by LED light strings to make a fire effect.

2017 Taipei Fringe Festival Honorable Mention
ABOUT THE PLAY WEEDS is a combination of strong emotional modern dance with simple but powerful conversation. There is a strong bond between the underlying story and the choreographer, Bo-liang Li. Until he finished his senior high school, Bo-liang lived with his family and friends in Ami tribe, the indigenous tribe located in eastern Taiwan. He used to chase with his friends in the forest and to swim in the cool and fresh stream; however, after moving to a city with hustle and bustle for further study, everything changed. The dominant ideology from the society is a chain that constrains his mind and soul. Nonetheless, he believes that there's always a place called home behind his back and a thing named love inside his heart. Just like weeds, flying away from the place we used to be, trying to find a ground to land on; eventually, the root can be found in love. It's a love with things, people and ourselves.
ABOUT LIGHTING DESIGN In the beginning of the dance, a dancer sang an old ballad with his pure voice, which gives me a vivid picture of people singing and sharing stories with each other in front of a campfire, under the moonlight. Therefore, I used a warm back light and a clear blue top-front light for this carefree moment. When it came to the depressive and struggling part of the dance, I took a bold step to use the peacock blue color and a diagonal direction from the ground. Thus, the color created an unrealistic and floating scene, and the direction of the light created a large and creepy shadow, as if the unfriendly environment was going to devour us from top to bottom. In the end, the sun in our heart comes up, and we take our past as nutrition which makes us stronger than we are used to be.

Xinsui Station
ABOUT THE PLAY The train rides to a mysterious place where is not only the origin but also the destination. It is Xinsui Station( 心碎車站 ), which means heartbroken station. Every passenger gets on and off the train for many different kinds of reasons and purposes. Some get off before the train arrives at the terminal station, and some cannot even get the opportunity to get on. It is a story about darkness, we need a light to lit up the path in front of us.
ABOUT LIGHTING DESIGN The play occured in a wagon and a forest-liked place without any sets-shifting. To create a clear difference between each scene, I separated the plot of lights into three sections: the wagon, the destination, and the combined scene. In the wagon, the light from top was the main direction, mostly white with pale yellow due to the concern of reality. When Agape, the highest form of love and charity, arrives at Xinsui station, a strong and warm light shines to heal the heartbroken people. I used a wild angle light to cover two characters who were in sorrow. In the end of the play, the girl finally receives the forgiveness from the boy once hurt by her, and gets on the train back home, under the warm light from windows.

The girl stole the heart from the innocent boy and got off the train.
The girl found the guy who cheated her in a rainy day. I use Double CTB color on side light and Dark Blue from top to make a rainy day. By contrast, I give a dim light on the boy sitting in desperation.

At last, Agape shows up and heals everyone. I give a warm and sun-liked light to represent the strength that Agape brings to us.

A Gang of Con-artists
ABOUT THE PLAY In 1980s, there were lots of unethical scammers around Taiwan who played tricks to make fortunes from innocent people, especially the elders. The play reveals the dark and greedy side of people who will stop at nothing to get money as much as they can. However, it's just a matter of time that the karma comes back to everyone in the play. It turns out that everyone in the play is involved in the circulation of lying, even the frauds themselves. At last, no one gets profits but loses something from themselves. It could be the trust between people, the relationship with families and the love in their heart.
ABOUT LIGHTING DESIGN I intended to create remarkable contrasts among various scenes in this play. For instance, I used a warm tone wash with haze in the sanctuary held by the fraud, and also gave a high level of intensity with color Straw to make a dramatic and ironic picture. Besides, in order to create a sexual innuendo atmosphere, I chose a peach with violet color in the back set. Moreover, in the illusion of a teenage girl who fell in love with a scammer, I used rotators with gobo patterns to make her whole world rotate and to generate bubbles which make the scene even more unrealistic. When it comes to the last scene, a cafeteria, a normal light was given because it provided a clear view of the characters' facial expression to the audience. No matter how great they are in scamming, lies are nowhere to hide eventually.

As a teaching assistant, not only did I deal with administrative paper work, but also spent extra time to help students who was fallen behind with their studies. Professor Li believed that I can work competentlly in this position because of my patience in teaching and mindful of the needs of students. In the end of the semester, I found that I had learned many new things from Professor Li ,and also taught by the students from the question that I have never thought of. It was a great teaching-learning assistant experience.
