The Fox and the Ghost King The Fox and the Ghost King is a tale of mystery, foxes and football. It ends with a newspaper article, which begins like this: “HOW THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM CAME TRUE Was it the manager? Was it the team? Was it the fans? How on earth did the Foxes, 5000-1 outsiders at the beginning of the season, managed to make our impossible dream come true and become Premier League champions?”
Storytelling challenge: Can you use rhetorical questions to introduce a story, just like the newspaper article above?
You should: Think of a story that you know well. It might be: • A fairy tale
Stuck for ideas? If you’re struggling for ideas, here are some question starters:
• The plot of a book or film that you like
• Have you ever…?
• Something that happened to you in real life
• Did you know…?
Can you think of a rhetorical question to begin your story and capture your readers’ interest?
• Have you heard of…?
• Have you ever wondered how Cinderella became a princess? • How did the pirate get his wooden leg? Well, that’s an interesting story…
You might: Once you have practised telling your story to a partner, you could write it down, beginning with a rhetorical question. You could use rhetorical questions in your other writing too – especially when you are trying to persuade someone!
