2020 VIRTUAL GALA

A Letter From Our Executive Director
Dear Friends & Supporters, While the 2020 Art of Childhood looks, and feels, different this year, we are excited to come together virtually via computer, phone, or tablet to celebrate and strengthen a critical mission: To keep children safe and families together. Thank you for joining us. Fundraising events are about need, but they are also about hope. It’s true that it is often overwhelming to think about all of the needs of children and families. But those of us involved daily in the work of human services and education know of the many individual accomplishments and victories, the small and large steps forward. There is a lot in our community to be proud of. I am proud of The Children’s Cabinet’s 35 year history and of all of our supporters who’ve helped us grow but stay true and focused along the way. Today, The Cabinet serves 12,000 Nevada families annually. This work spans the lives of children ages birth through 24 years old. All families have need at some time. We want to guarantee an open door (or in our case, many open doors) and access
to resources and services for all families. This includes The Cabinet’s free Family Counseling program, which we are celebrating this year. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, or simply a caring community member, I hope our speaking program informs your mind and touches your heart. I hope you understand more about the hopes and needs of the families in our community. You support us with your donations tonight but also by going out into the world tomorrow advocating for children and spreading the word about The Children’s Cabinet’s work. While this year’s Art of Childhood is a new way of celebrating for all of us, we ask for your continued support during these particularly challenging times. Your donations will directly support our mission and programs that keep children safe and families together. Please know how much we appreciate your friendship, partnership, and support! With warm regards,
Kim Young Executive Director

FAMILY COUNSELING PROGRAM
“Families having access to mental health services has literally
saved lives. Our teams help kids and families cope and communicate through tragedy, substance use, depression, domestic violence, mental health issues, and more. It is powerful to work with each family and help them achieve healthier, happier relationships.” — Children’s Cabinet Therapist Providing free counseling for families has been a Children’s Cabinet organization priority since we began serving children and families in 1985. With an open door, we focus on families with children up to 24 years old who do not have access to considerations. The Children’s Cabinet is Nevada that consistently provides free family counseling services. All Children’s Cabinet therapists are licensed mental health professionals (MFTs, LCSWs or CPCs) or supervised interns. These specialists help families improve their communication and to better approach is family-centered and always starts by identifying a family’s unique needs and strengths. Our family counseling services also include Signs of Suicide screenings and counseling on all Washoe
County middle school campuses, and Safe Place crisis intervention for runaway and homeless youth and their families. Many times a family simply needs some short-term strategies to get them on track. Other families might work with their Cabinet therapist for 20 sessions or more. We make sure that any family who comes to The Cabinet for counseling has access to our other, “wrap-around,” services, including food pantry and basic needs, child care resources, parenting workshops, youth mentorship, education, and work experience programs. Once a family has accessed services, built a relationship with Cabinet staff, and achieved their initial goals, they can always reach out and continue counseling as family issues arise. Currently, the Children’s Cabinet’s Family Counseling program provides support to
more than 400 families each year. Recent program expansion increased services and capacity including specialized outreach for families affected by the opioid crisis. While the need in our community is far greater. multiple phone calls from families seeking help and for counseling services, and we currently have a waiting list. A donation of any amount will help The Children’s Cabinet reach and serve more families, especially in that crucial time period as problems become serious and a family reaches out for assistance. Together, we are able to give families the tools they need to grow stronger. Your donation will make professional counseling and mental health services
available to more families. Thank You! “Last year my Children’s Cabinet therapist told me that I’d probably be in a totally different place and that a lot would be different. Little did I know, it actually would be. I have greater self-esteem and I feel pretty comfortable being who I am. I appreciate that she was able to talk to me and help me.” “Through her work with the therapist, my child has become more sure of herself ways and tools to deal with social and emotional situations, and has been able to overcome some of the issues and struggles she has dealt with for years. This has greatly affected our family and changed all of our perspectives on how our family connects to each other. We now know how to talk through everyday challenges.”
$1,500 is enough to provide for one family.
