2021: A Year-in-Review
A look into the performance, impact and reach of our southern Colorado hospital
HOSPITAL COLORADO, COLORADO SPRINGS
CHILDREN’S
In May 2019, we opened the doors of Children’s Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs to the community, giving tens of thousands of kids and families in southern Colorado convenient access to world-class pediatric health care. Philanthropy played an integral role in opening this new hospital, and commutnity support continues to be important as we expand services and offerings to meet the needs of our growing region.
As a nonprofit hospital, we are committed to providing all children with the very best care and outcomes, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Children’s Colorado is a preferred destination for military members with children in the “Exceptional Family Member Program,” because of the outstanding expertise and depth of care our team can provide. This means that military families who have a child with complex medical needs can be preferentially stationed at bases and posts in Colorado due to their proximity to our hospital and clinics.
“We opened our new hospital in Colorado Springs three years ago to bring the best medical care possible closer to home for kids in southern Colorado. Since then, we have continued to build on that promise. In the time since we opened, we have added 16 new beds at our hospital and expanded our existing outpatient clinics, added new ones and began construction on a new location.”

Meet the Real “G”
Giovanni (“G”) has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a rare condition affecting physical and intellectual development. This condition can cause cognitive delays, low muscle tone and seizures. The prognosis, however, varies considerably for each patient. Fortunately, Giovanni is making wonderful strides after his military family was transferred to Colorado Springs in 2015 and Giovanni began receiving care at Children’s Colorado. Today, he sees a team of specialists, and through multiple therapies at Children’s Colorado, Giovanni is singing, dancing and surpassing everyone’s expectations of what he would be able to do.
“The new hospital in Colorado Springs has made life SO much easier,” Giovanni’s mom says. “It used to be that one of us would take Giovanni to Denver while the other was with our other three kids, which made life so difficult. Now, it’s much quicker and takes so much less time.”

The more than 25,000-square-foot facility at 2375 Telstar Drive will be home to pediatric mental health services, including counseling and a daytime partial hospitalization program, where young people can have the benefit of several hours of intensive therapy during the day but can spend the night at home with their families. Bringing these and other services to southern Colorado was accelerated by donors who share our commitment to expanding access to care.
“We see the spectrum, from young elementary-aged kids up through young adults, who are struggling with their mental health and well-being. Thanks to community support, we are going to add new services for these young people and their families in southern Colorado by fall of 2022.”
