Statement

CHILIN a state of relaxed consciousness. Happy to exist. Accepting all that is real, the good, the bad and the indifferent. Chilin is a Freestyle news magazine geared toward everyday thoughts, culture or lifestyle. We will take daily observations and put them on our pages. In other words we will do whatever we want. The intent of Chilin Magazine is to bring together artists and creative types from different genres. We live, breathe and feed on creativity from our own ideas to others better than our own. We get fired up and are ecstatic when we see great photography, great typographic solutions, awesome layouts and we want you to share that with us too. Our sole purpose is to bring forth those thoughts, ideas and opinions in a most energized way so as to entertain each other. We just want to have some fun. Stop taking yourself so seriously everyday, so lighten up and relax. Since we will be unguarded and unfiltered we welcome your input on subjects, especially the ones we might not have thought about. It is only through correction, input and team work we will become better and achieve greatness. We are giving you the permission to hold us accountable for a standard that should be upheld, graphically and literally. We will touch on subjects as from our neighbours opinions to over heard conversation of school kids on the public buses, as well as politics, lifestyle, fashion and art. Any thing that intrigues, interests, angers or bothers us. You might even think we are crazy. We are all crazy, some more than others. Just don’t dismiss us! But in the mean time get off your ass and live your life as a verb. Be about something, be about Chilin. . Lets CHILL

This issue would not be complete if we here at Chilin did not say our own goodbyes to Michael Jackson however small or late. Our condolences to his family. We found out about his death on the street. When we realized almost every vehicle was bumping his jams and picked up on bits and pieces of conversation from strangers passing by. In the days and weeks ensuing his death lots of love and negativity surrounding the late pop star surfaced. Since it is not polite to speak ill of the dead we too will refrain fron any negativity. We did not personally know the star and is definitely not the right ones to judge him. We are very grateful for all the music he has created over the years. So may of us can remember how young we were when we heard his songs or saw his first videos. He may have actually been our introduction to music videos. And one of the few star we felt we connected to. He was young, fresh faced-that oh so cute boy who sang like an angel and dance like none other. We were all at some point in our lives infatuated with Michael. Boys wanted to be him and girls well....And if we did not own the glove or the infamous red jacket we atleast knew someone else who did. He possibly is one of the most versatile artist we have ever seen. When you look at his videos from the earliest ones as a kid to his adulthood there is a certain joy, passion and intensity that not too many artist can convey through the screen. The ‘rock with you’ video per say just makes everyone instantly happy no matter what mood they are in. What other artist in the world has created such timeless music that was great in the 80’s and just as awesome today. Mostly we are sad because he has not really created any new material in the last few years. Though we know he has unreleased recording.we do so await that but with his death it will not be the same. Rest in peace Michael Jackson, gone too soon. You will never be forgotten. There will never be anyone before or after you that has made such an impact _Chilin

Cover Story

When it came time to design a cover for our first issue, I knew I wanted to have an illustration as the first piece. And I at least thought that I would design it myself. However, time and the occassional designers block made me realize that I would not be able to come up with something I liked. However, when I came acrosss Ben’s work, I knew right away that I wanted to work with him. Like everything else these days through a series of messages online we exchanged numbers and the project began. I gave him a hint of what I wanted and told him to run with it. By giving him total freedeom to design I knew I would be surprised by the outcome and I must say I am pleased by the results. And I hope that you the readers enjoy it as much as we do. C: Hello Ben, can you introduce yourself to our readers who are not familiar with you and your work? BK: Hello, my name is Ben Kwok, I’m Taiwanese. I came to America at the age of 3 and have been here all my life. I love art and animals. C: Where do you live? BK: I currently reside in Alhambra California. For those that don’t know where that is, it’s about 15 minutes from Downtown L.A. w/o traffic that is.

Art is more about aesthetics and personal expression while design is more about having a fuctional purpose. BK: I live for art and design. Art is more about aesthetics and personal expression while design is more about having a fuctional purpose. I like to think that my work is a fusion of art and design. C: What are you working on now? BK: I’m working on a Mother Nature piece. It is my commentary on how we as humans are being irresponsible by polluting the world we live in. Mother Nature is suffering for us, but sooner or later we’ll take the bulk of the impact.

“The process of creation is largely related to discovering things as you go along.” C: How did you become involved in art? BK: It’s been a calling of mine since I was 3 years old. I’ve always love to doodle. Luckily for me it transformed into a career. Well, I’ve always wanted to do something creative and now I’m a graphic artist for Koral Industries. It’s either being into art or working with animals.

usually takes me quite a long time. I tweak here and there until I’m completely happy. The background is usually freestyle. Little to no preparations are made to backgrounds. I would simply add shapes and colors. Some ideas would pop in my head and I would experiment. Finally about 15-30 hours later, the image is completed.

C: When you are given a project, how do you go from concept to execution. Tell us what the process is like BK: Hopefully the project is fun and exciting. Sometimes it isn’t but you can’t aways do what you want to do. So you make the best of it. When given a project, I look at the potential of what the client expects and what I can actually accomplish. I would have to say that 75% of the time, the end result is not what I expected. The process of creation is largely related to discovering things as you go along. Let’s take the magazine cover for example. I spoke to you in regards to what you wanted. She gave me full artistic freedom which is the best format to work from, but she suggested using more diverse and ethnic subjects. Something people can identify with. I searched through tons of magazines trying to get the right images. I finally came to 3 images that I liked. I would do a pencil sketch or directly trace the magazine clippings on the computer. Then I would sketch the hair (which is my favorite part of the process). I love to make the hair flow in and out of each other. To give it a lot of volume and life. After I’m done with the sketch I would take it into the computer again. Vectorize what needs to be vectorized. Then, I would start adding the color. Adding colors

C: What ‘s you favorite medium to work in? Do you have an established working method? BK: I like pen and ink. But with my day job of working on the computer all day, I have come to realize the power of the computer. I can do exactly what I want on the computer without the hassle of dealing with traditional medium. The best part is ctrl+z. I can’t live without the undo button. I use to use Photoshop a lot, but Illustrator is my current tool of choice. I don’t have an established working method... maybe with the vectorized portraits, but it’s all about what I feel like doing at the moment. Sometimes it comes out well and at times it really sucks. C: As a creative what is/was your ideal or best design experience? BK: I really enjoy doing gallery work. I enjoy being my own art director. Doing what I want without having to please anyone but myself. Finally I get to frame my work and put it up in galleries. It’s very satisfying to have people enjoy my pieces. It’s even better if they purchase them, but that’s not the goal. What is art without an audience right? C: What is your current feeling about art and design?

C: Looking back to when you were a student, what would you change in order to increase a student’s ability to become a better artist? BK: I really don’t know. I want to say, “practice, practice, practice”, but as a student before, that’s what we all did. I guess it would be important to understand the business side of being an artist. I know when I was done with school I was completely lost. I didn’t know who to speak to, where to go, what to do. So do your homework. Know what industry you want to get into and know as much as you can about that industry. Make sure it’s something you want to do. Don’t be like me and wonder around aimlessly. Create a goal and go after it. I’m still truckin’ away.

C: Like any creative person, music represents an important source of inspiration; what kind of music are you listening to right now? BK: I really enjoy Mushroom Jazz mixed my Mark Farina who is under the Om label. It’s a fusion of hip-hop and jazz. I like the strong thumping bass with the smooth flow of jazz. DJ Cam is awesome and so is DJ Krush. They are on the same line of music but I’m not sure what genre this type of music is. Ohhhh...IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) really inspires me. Artists like Aphex Twin and Telefon Tele Aviv are the best in my opinion. Unpredictable beats and clicks, irregular patterns. It keeps me on my toes...I love it. Just for fun C: If you could do anything in the world what would it be? BK: I want to fly. C: Favorite movie BK: Top Gun C: Favorite food BK: Potstickers-Potstickers are those chinese dumplings. The only different is that instead of being boiled or steamed, they’re pan fried. :=) They’re very very yummy, most Chinese restaurants should have them. So it’s not an L.A. thing C: Favorite designers BK: Too many to name C: Favorite book BK: Ones with lots of pictures. C: Are you a neat freak or a messy Marvin BK: I’m very anal about my art and a neat freak. C: Any words of wisdom you want to leave us with? BK: Be flexible with what you can produce. I know I hold myself back at times because I expect too much. When I’m able to step back and see projects for what it is instead of what I expect, it’s a lot more fun. When the work becomes fun, the end result is usually extraordinary. Ben Yin-Pan Kwok Ben_Y_Kwok@yahoo.com http://www.myspace.com/bioworkz Thanks Ben. You Rock!! 006

Dear chilaxing, I met this really cute guys he has an amazing body and so cute. To top it all of he is single, with no kids. When he opens his mouth its like he makes no sense, my friend says he’s “touched” lol. In a perfect world I would have liked to date him, the package ‘looks’ right. I cannot date him for one main reason he is a transition guy- he is trying to get his finances or himself right before he is willing to take any woman serious. So rather than waste my time I will adore his ‘touched’ self from a distance. Marcie, Bk

center of whatever she is doing. 1999, in an attempt to become a priestess of the Latin Tridentine Church, O’Connor abandoned her vow of celibacy after three months. The singer told the Agence France Presse (AFP), “I meant well by doing the celibacy thing but it doesn’t work for me because I need love and affection....” What O’Connor is doing is great for her and reggae on a whole. She believes that, “the teaching of rastafari saved my life, and when someone saves your life the least you can do is give back”. However, is the music and it’s message being construed based on it’s messenger. Rastas has been for a long time standing by their convictions and their beliefs. And it has been a very long and tedious process getting the rest of the world to really accept reggae on the same level as other genres of music. Reggae and rasta is about love, peace, truth and justice. Is the world going to accept reggae as it is or does it have to be presented in the packaging of the all saving white woman with some comparable struggles? Is this album going to be accepted for what it is a great reggae album or accepted because of the messenger. The jamaica Gleaner quotes the singer as saying, “my intention is not to exploit the teaching of rastafari, but to pass on the messenge to some who might not know God and religion are two seperate things.” Has she done justice to the beliefs of rastafarianism and “rasta”music as she calls it. I cannot answer because I am not a rasta. “Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior, is finally and However, I felt through her I wanted to convert to something greater than permanently discredited and abandoned, everywhere is war. the public Does any one know? Business hours at the Fulton Street location in Brooklyn are listed from 9am to 10pm Monday to Sunday. I went there two Saturdays consecutively around 7pm on both occassions and enterered the store with a different friend each time. There was absolutely no cakes on display anywhere. Not even a fake model cake. I almost felt like I was in the wrong place. There was staff who completely ignored the fact that someone had entered the “cake shop”. When we were finally acknowledge we were told “ cake slices would be ready in one hour”. Are you serious? We are already spending six dollars a slice. Now why should we wait around for one whole hour for your cakes? If your hours of operation have changed please keep the doors locked with a sign on the door. Upon exiting the shop for the second time sans cake I learned that my friend had tried earlier in the week to get some cake and had to walk out empty handed also. We hate to speculate here but dear Raven has anyone told you we are in a recession and you should do whatever is necessary to keep your regular customers happy and coming back while trying to get new ones. Don’t rest on the fact that you have a name and following for your cakes it can’t all go away, it can all go away. These are not the times to take things for granted. Brooklyn Moon Restaurant. Fulton Street, Brooklyn. What can we say the food is delicious. The apple salad, I have to admit I have enjoyed it everytime I went there. The Jerk chicken is great and it is not overly spiced where you are not sure what you are eating because your mouth is on fire. This one is nice and subtle. An the fruit punch blend is so delicious my friend calls it “liquid crack” she thinks it is that good. the only complaint we have about the Brooklyn Moon the wait times are a bit long. A small suggestions if you can’t reduce the wait time put some bread on the table for munching on. It takes away the hunger pangs. Your good food does make up for the wait times. -Chilin

We will try to share with you a little bit of the pleasure we had holding onto this mag. If you are a true Rolling Stone magazine fan you know their layouts are ALWAYS on point. Whether it is good photography or just the amazing usage of typography this magazine always delivers. I may not read the mag cover to cover but I am always in awe of the layout skills showcased in each issues. This issue featured on of 2009’s biggest experimental pop music star Lady Gaga in a plastic bubble dress in a soap suds room filed with naked bodies provocatively strewn on the floor and on the couches creating a dreamy soap suds of ambiance. Scopello’s Bar. Lafayette/Fulton Street, Brooklyn. What are we drinking: Ginger martini/Sunflower Martini say no more and I was tipsy. We tried something a little heavier on a different night Stolly and oranges w/ soda and boy was I wasted the next day. I had to get a raw food chef to send me a recovery recipe. (Yikes!)Now I am sure there may be other great drinks, as a self profess ‘never been drunk’ my streak has forever been broken while I staggered slightly out of the downstairs bathroom. We like the crowd at Scopello’s, guys and girls are really in the mood to drink and have a great time. The ambience is not the same as the crowd at Moes who seem eternally looking to hook up with every fresh face that comes throught the door and they are open late on sunday nights which is awesome.

I think I am a text addict. I confess and it has the potential to ruin my life. I text all day during work and I sit so close to my manager i know he hears my phone on constant vibrate. Not only am I addicted to texting, when ever I have to respond to commercial vendors or my superiors I have to constantly remember to write full words instead of text vernacular. We work so hard in corporate America the last thing we need is to embarrass our selves with faulty spelling. LMAO oops!!! -Chilin

Hello why are there so many single people in NYC? Does anyone know? I see the most beautiful people everyday we are all single. What is up with that? Then you have the few that are dating and are going through hell trying to maintain their relationships. One persons wants the union to work while the other is on another level either trying to get out or rather trying to ‘have his/her cake and eat it to” while they figure out what to do with what they have.

The he Smoke Joint Lafayette/Fulton Street, Brooklyn. We are always in the area hanging out always peering into the windows of the Smoke Joint but never entered until a new dear friend called me up on a rainy saturday and asked if I wanted to go grab something to eat. I wasn’t doing anything else so why not. She asked me if I had ever been to the smoke house and of course since I had never paid much attention to the spot even when I pass infro of it so regularly. Well I went and i am forever hooked the corn on the cob with rub spice and a nice creamy sauce with green onions is surprising and delicious. The pulled pork sandwich does not disappoint at all. The beans and the mac and cheese is beyond yummy. I am so hooked i have brought other friends who have enjoyed it also. not only is the food delicious the wait time is not too bad and the wait staff is really nice and friendly. And since the tables are so tightly packed you just might make a new friend before you leave, since the people sitting next to you is curious to what you are eating and vice versa

How many pointless reality shows do we have to sit through before the expiration run it course. There’s “the housewives” which I have to admit I do watch for the laugh factor. Then there are the biggest losers and Bridezillas and several others. Now we have the “Tiny & Toya “ show comprised of Lil Wayne’s ex wife and TI’s woman. Then theres the Neffie & Frankie show, Keisha Cole’s mom and sister. Do we really need to put those programs on the telly. Simply looking at these show I feel really dumb already. I understand everyone has struggles and everyone one has hurdles too but to we really need to be witnesess to everyone elses struggles. By broadcasting such shows I feel the networks are avoiding creating new and exciting programs on tv. We have allowed them to following a trend instead of breaking it down and starting new ones. The surprising thing is that for every show there is an audience that will embrace it even if it is really just another way of dumbing down of the masses. Did anyone really stop to think of what adverse effects does bad television programing cause? -Chilin CHILIN JUNE, 2009

elcome to the Isle of Spice a.ka. Grenada. It is believed that there is more spice on the island per capita than anywhere else in the world. With only six parishes St. Patricks’s, St.Mark’s, St. John’s, St. Andrew’s, St. Davids and St. George’s. One can easily visit all of them in a day with time to stop for lunch and dinner. In 1498, during his third voyage Christopher Columbus discovered Grenada and Carib Indians inhibited the land, it remained uncolonized for more than a century. In the 17th century French settlers established sugar estates. By 1762, Britain had captured the island from the French and expanded sugar productions. Grenada is known to be one of the smallest independent countries in the western hemisphere. And though small it has always made it’s presence felt. When seized my Marxist military council on October 19, 1983 the US forces invaded the small island and quickly captured the Marxist leaders and several Cuban advisers. From an ego standpoint, you think your’re hot shit, but really, deep down, when you go to bed at night, you go, I don’t know if I’m good enough. Dear Marcie, you are doing the right thing by keeping your distance. It shows growth on your part. Say hello when you see him. Flirt if you feel like it and walk away feeling like the goddess you are because you love yourself enough to know better. And even then, is it really worth you time trying to wait around for a man to decide if he wants to Dear Julie, struggle with you to build the empire together or build it all by himself. your coworker think she is getting away He will never give you what you want. C: How did you become involved in art? BK: It’s been a calling of mine since I was 3 years old. I’ve always love to doodle. Luckily for me it transformed into a career. Well, I’ve always wanted to do something creative and 004

“Art is more about aesthetics and personal expression while design is more about having a fuctional purpose. “ of art and design. C: What are you working on now? BK: I’m working on a Mother Nature piece. It is my commentary on how we as humans are being irresponsible by polluting the world we live in. Mother Nature is suffering for us, but sooner or later we’ll take the bulk of the impact.

“The process of creation is largely related to discovering things as you go along.”

now I’m a graphic artist for Koral Industries. It’s either being into art or working with animals.

Adding colors usually takes me quite a long time. I tweak here and there until I’m completely happy. The background is usually freestyle. Little to no preparations are made to backgrounds. I would simply add shapes and colors. Some ideas

would pop in my head and I would experiment. Finally about 15-30 hours later, the image is completed. BK: I live for art and design. Art is more about aesthetics and personal expression while design is more about having a fuctional purpose. I like to think that my work is a fusion

You Rock!!

My style(s) is an enemy to my art career. It is because I change it every day, week or month. If I could force my self to do, I don’t know, only surreal pencil drawings, I would be much more «famous» than I am now. Believe me. But I can’t help myself and so I follow my instincts and I think that all artist should do so.

C: Tell us a little bit about your self, for the people that don’t know anything about you. MP: My name is Marko Prpic AKA Zets, Bearhunter, Weabbit, Task or even Psiho. Yes, I am all of them. I am a 27 year old guy, born and raised in Zagreb, Croatia. C: How did you become involved in art? What is your art back ground? MP: Hmm… I really don’t remember that. I think I started drawing in my 2nd year of elementary school. First thing I did was a page and a half cover of comics called Eagle Ninja ha, ha! Sounds really stupid. Doesn’t it? I started sculpting years before that. I was maybe 3 or so. I still remember that I did some peasants heads. Oh yes, I never went to any type of art school or university. I graduated as a textile designer. C: Where does your inspiration for your art come from? Does it come naturally? MP: My inspiration comes from my imagination. At least that was the case when I was younger. My work was a lot more original back then. I can tell for sure but I really think that I’m influenced by other artists now. I blame the internet for that. It made me realize how small I am, but I am still trying to keep up with other guys… and girls of course.

C: How would you categorize your work? MP: I wouldn’t, because I use so many styles and techniques. I like to draw weabbits (something similar to bunnies), vector graphics, surreal creatures (mixed and melted together)… I like to use pencils, computer, spray-cans, pastels, acrylics,…

We support art.. no bullshit” C: You have a distinctive style, how does one create a style. Is it a long process or do you go by what you are most comfortable with? MP: My style(s) is an enemy to my art career. It is because I change it every day, week or month. If I could force my self to do, I don’t know, only surreal pencil drawings, I would be much more «famous» than I am now. Believe me. But I can’t help myself and so I follow my instincts and I think that all artist should do so. C: Are you influenced by other artists? Who are they? MP: I don’t know. I think I am. But I’m sure that I wasn’t influenced by them before, when I started with that surreal stuff and graffiti.

So yes, you could say that I am influenced by other artists but mostly in the field of graphic design. There are tons and tons of artists that I like. That’s the main reason why I started the boonika.com project with my friend Marko Rukavina (movie director). Our mission is to support talented artists from around the world. Our slogans says it all: “WE SUPPORT ART… NO BULLSHIT!” C: Do you know the work of surrealist H.R.Giger? There are some similarities in you esthetic with the exception that your mediums are different. How does it feel to be compared to other artists? MP: One thing is sure. Giger is god of surrealism. Or at least one of gods. The first time I heard about Giger, and have been compared to him, I had my first group exhibition called ”Visions”. I must admit that I didn’t like that comparison because I had never heard about that guy before. I heard about “Alien “ but I never heard about H. R. Giger. At that time I thought that I had a style so unique and independent from all other styles in history. Of course, that was stupid for me to think. Today, I am really happy when someone compares me to some great artist. Especially to someone like H. R. G.

I have to admit the first time I saw Marko Prpic’s surreal pencil drawings I was immediately drawn in. I wondered what kind of person creates art like this? What parts of the brain does such sick and twisted imagery come from? Marko’s work is one of those situations where you want to look away but you cannot. This is the moment when you stop and realize the beauty and subjectivity that is art. I think my appreciation for Marko’s comes from that place where I can see faces in the most abstract of images such as chipping paint on a discarded wall. Marko Prpic’s work is filled with faces and the more you look at these faces the more you realize that these characters have a story all of their own even though they are working together to create one visual piece.. The mediums of pencil drawing, pastels and acrylics show his versatility as an artist. The scary and gritty nature of Marko’s art shows the complexiy of the human being and the struggle between his/her conflicts of beauty and aging and fusing the different layers of reality. 006

C: When you have a new project, how does the process begin. Do you have a set idea in mind from the start or is it developed over time? MP: It depends. I’m really busy now and yes, I have to plan things. But I don’t like that. I feel much more comfortable when I don’t have to follow schedule. All my pencil drawings come straight from my head. It’s a different story with paintings and vector characters. C: For most people looking at your work, their first impression might be, weird or scary, some might even think you might be dysfunctional, how do YOU respond to that as an artist? MP: Yes, I know it looks scary. I am really happy when I am able to paint nice paintings. But that does not happen too often. It’s easier to do scary things. Only real masters are able to do beautiful (happy) things with a certain quality level. Dysfunctional? No, that’s not me. I’m the kind of guy who practices box and goes to football (soccer for North Americans) matches. And there are girls of course. Big hello to my love Vanja. You could say that my neighbourhood had more influence on my life than my art did. C: Which medium are you most comfortable with? MP: Pencil. I love pencil. But I also like pastels (crayons) and acrylics. C: Your work is very detailed how long does it take to get one piece done? MP: It depends. I can do 200 x 100 cm airbrush canvas in two days. But It takes two weeks for me to finish a small pencil drawing.

To see more of Marko Prpic’s art and to find out more about his team check out these links:

C: What are you working on right now? MP: I’m working on a concept for my next exhibition. I’m preparing some materials for my NYC visit that will happen in November. I’ll visit some NYC galleries while I’m there. I’m coming to NYC with the whole Boonika team and so we plan to do video interviews with some NYC artists.

C: As an artist, what directions would you like to see art take right now. MP: I’m not worried about direction. I’m worried about quality. C: How important would you say art is to the world? MP: It’s important all right but it’s not the only thing that can make our planet to be a better place. Peace, health, love and then art.

Just for fun! C: If you could do anything in the world what would it be? MP: You mean what would I do if I could be god for some time? I would turn Whites into Blacks, Blacks into Hispanics, Hispanics into… and so on. But only for a few months. I would turn poor into rich and vice versa. But only for a few months. I would turn men into women and vice versa. But only for few months. I would turn men into animals, animals into plants… and so on. But only for few months. And I would repeat all of that every 10 years. Believe me, the world would be a better place after that. Thank you Marko.

C: Do you think young people are getting involved in art enough? MP: Yes, but not the way they should. Most of the young people are running after money and I understand them because I’m one of them. But that’s no excuse.

-Chilin 0012

We know cakes have the biggest profit margin in the food selling department. Stop taking your customers and your business for granted. If you need extra help stimulate the economy and hire help. Your cakes are delicious can the service be just as sweet? Three strikes you out... -Lost Customer_Brooklyn

For those of you that missed the June issue of Rolling Stones magazine (RS 1080) you have missed a delicious pink treat. Photography done by the extremely talented David Lachapelle. Kudos RS.

-Chilin

The Smoke Joint Lafayette/Fulton Street, Brooklyn.

//Dumbing Down Of Our Society

I understand everyone has struggles and everyone one has hurdles too b creating new and exciting programs on tv. We have allowed them to following a trend instead of breaking it down and starting new ones. The surprising thing is tha Did anyone really stop to think of what adverse effects does bad television programing cause? -Chilin CHILIN September, 2009

Album Review:

Paparazzi:Lady Gaga Photos:http://www.ciaraworld.com

We enjoy listening to anything with the Marley stamp on it. And we support anything done by this man. Ziggy Marley is a huge advocate for children’s right and participates in lending his voice to several children’s programs. As the founder of U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment) he supports charitable childrens causes in Jamaica, Ethiopia and different parts of the world. This album is Ziggy’s first attempt at making childrens music and though we were slightly surprised at the direction we also wonder why it took so long in coming. Family time is in no way age specific. Everyone from 2 to 82 can sit and enjoy this rich reggae infused happy, relaxed vibe. With a host of guest stars beginning with his family members Rita Marley (mother) Cedella Marley (sister), Judah Marley (daughter) Jack Johnson, Laurie Berkner, Elizabeth Mitchell and Jamie Lee Curtis, Toots & the Maytals, Paul Simon, Paul Fuga & Willie Nelson. You will be pleasantly loving the rythms on the whole album feeling a great joy. And we know not too many albums can achieve that.... this album realy does ‘lift up your spirits with a song’. For those of you that are especially looking for music to share with your kids you will really enjoy the “Family Time” rendition featuring his daughter Judah. Her sweet voice innocently echoing her dads words” makes even the non parent in us here at Chilin gush and break out in “aaaaww that is so cute“ and imagine so many little kiddies smiling and playing in the summer to these songs. This fun pack album brings out the feel of summer and laughter and laughs while maintaining its roots reggae quality. This is a must have for all family gathering big or small or to just pop into your car while you are on your way to where ever. There is also two narratives done by Jamie Lee Curtis which is fun and is a different approach to most albums, we somehow wished they had combined into a song and narative piece. the overall album is really fun we definitely reccomend buying it for your kids and for those of you that have no kids get it for the kid in you.. it is that much fun. -Chilin

“Love Sex Magic”: Ciara ft Justin Timberlake What do we like about this video? Everything.... We cannot get enough of this video. After you get over the initial fact that it sounds more like a spinoff of any one of Justin’s musical numbers. Yes, it really does sound more like something Justin would do rather than a Ciara joint. Overall, we really enjoy this video. It is visually appealing on every level. KUDOS!!!! To whom ever came up with the concept for this video, awesome job. How many times do we look at music videos and wish someone went back to the drawing board and came up with another sketch before bring it to the public. It is an uber sexy video and it achieved everything it was supposed to and then some. The styling in the video off-da-hook, really intriguing and makes you want to see what she is really wearing. The intimacy of the video makes us all feel like we are intruding into these two people’s life but guess what we can’t stop looking. Yeah, you know it happened to you.. Ciara definitely delivers on this we are never surprised by her level of work. We enjoy watching her evolve as an artist and become better at what she is good at naturally. The beat is really intense and fun at the same time. Now we all know if a guy catch his girl in the mood with this kind of music guys you know it’s on.... It is really great to see artists experiment with their platforms. Whether it is the artist infront of the camera or the fashion folks, the videographer and the choreographers. It takes team effort to creat a product like this and we just want to let you know we are watching and know the difference when good work is done. It really comes together well in the end when you have people who are dedicated to their crafts. -Chilin

What do we like about this video? Everything.... Everything about this video is awesome, the level of creativity and visual stimuli in this piece is almost on the verge of overdose. It is well done and above standards. The fashion is cutting edge and has a very old school Italian feel to the interior architecture in the background. She epitomize what glamour really is. Frankly here at Chilin we feel she makes alot of the older artist look a little soft. They should elevate their game and start pushing the boundaries more. We really are tired of watching the same videos with different faces. step the level of the game up, fire whom ever you need to and hire whom ever you need to make you skill and tallent shine through. We look forward to see and hear everything that Lady Gaga does. Her sense of edge really inspires us and her willingness to be different and not get sucked into the industry box is refreshing

Best I ever had:Drake What do we like about this video? Absolutely nothing..... Your crew has failed you Drake... How can a song as hot as yours have such a wack video? The story line of the video is so cliche and has no relevance nor does it form any real connection to the content of your lyrics. As the audience we feel like everything from lyrics, to visual imagery to the beats should be cohesive and really engage us for the full 5 minutes. Ok, so you did mention mascot and there was a mascot. And the whole girls basketball team and pep talk, what was the point of that? That idea for this video should have been shelved for another one of your songs which we have not heard as yet. The concept of this one could have all been a 15 seconds spot I your whole video made up of a greater story line. For someone who doesn’t quite have a record out as yet we will forgive you, this one time. We love your song an the fact that you can rhyme and sing with equal ease we give you much credit. You have our full attention and we hope that the people who helped you get this video out will step up to the plate and deliver next time. We will be watching and listening...

elcome to the isle of spice a.ka. In 1498, during his third voyage Christopher Columbus discovered Grenada. Carib Indians inhibited the land and it remained uncolonized for more than a century. In the 17th century French settlers established sugar estates. By 1762, Britain had captured the island from the French and expanded sugar productions. Though by the 19th century cacoa became the main export of the small island and was surpassed for nutmeg being exported by the 20th century as the main export. Grenada is known to be one of the smallest independent countries in the western hemisphere. And though small it has always made it’s presence felt. When seized by Marxist military council on October 19, 1983 the US forces invaded the small island and quickly captured the Marxist leaders and several Cuban advisers. Grenada’s main source of foreign exchange is through tourism something even the locals share in by selling spices or hand made items as they pass by. With a population of 90,739 very relaxed and sociable people, Grenadians have a deep pride and fire within them that is as much a part of their heritage. When the Carib Indians jumped of the hills of St.Patricks to avoid working for the Spaniards it lead to the infamously name Leapers Hill in St. Patricks. It was since then the Grenadian people showed their strength and prideful ways choosing 0016

death rather than become indentured slaves in their own homeland. Grenada has a very rich culture. It’s way of life is deep rooted and though it has changed in many was it still maintains so much of it’s untouched quality. Seeing life through the eyes of the locals takes you to most intimate place. To visit a place and stay in hotels and to be driven around in a tour bus is a safe yet cheated way to travel. To be a part of a place you are visiting is to see its local markets, shop where the locals shop- not the tourist malls, eat what they eat, not that five star dining over priced chef menu. Stand next to them and just observe life’s to and fro’s the same way they see it. If you visit an island or any country if one does not visit it’s local marketplace one has already robbed onerself of touching the heart and feeling the pulse CHILIN September, 2009

of that place. The marketplace of any country is where daily life thrives. Vendors with their local wares commune together to outsell each other while maintaining the best friendships. Bargains are negotiated and the best produces are sought after. The sellers with the best prices and products are highly favored and repeat customers are willing to pass on the information. Here anyone can sell something and make some money to feed their family. All this leads to a beautiful existence in the lifestyle of the island people and their reachable quality and unspoilt friendliness. The innocence and the gentle good morning and good night greeting of passerby to each other is very welcoming and is very respective of North America’s southern culture. One is easily reminded how out of touch and cold we are when we live in other parts of the world, when warm, unassuming smiles greet you each and every day without fail. If waking up next to the beach is only a dream to you it is an everyday reality here. And the soft lapping, comforting sounds of the waves at night lulls you to a blissfull dreamy no need for sleeping aids state of peace. If early morning sandy jogs and practicing yoga on the beach sounds like the 0018

ultimate bliss imagine you can have that everyday of your life. It doesn’t take very much to have a simple beautiful life like this it only takes choosing another path. We all crave it but so many of us are afraid to reach for it. Some how we mistakenly have convinced ourself that they are the deprived ones because we label them third world. Grenada is a very organic island where the locals still catch their own fish with the communal effort of pulling the seine(a large fishing net that hangs vertically in the water by attaching weights along the bottom edge and floats along the top) on the beach. Little children join in the efforts of catching their own dinner just for the opportunity to play in the ocean and the sand. Grenada has a culture that defined an organic lifestyle long before it was fashionable. It is amazing what is trend to us in the U.S. is a way of life for other people. How much more organic can you get than to pick your own fruits and vegetables straight out of your very own trees growing in your backyard. Produce which have probably never know the harsh taste of chemical pesticides. Growning your own chickens for eggs and selling the extra makes everyone a vendor of some sort.

CHILIN September, 2009

CHILIN September, 2009

The fresh, delicious pesticide-free foods taste almost too rich for my too accustomed fast food palate and I then suffered stomach aches for two days straight. A quick local remedy for stomach pain of Angostura bitters and warm water takes care of it on the third day. Who would have thought the body needs adjustment to fresh homegrown goodness. It is amazing what we can allow our self to get used to. The older heads on the island look strong, vibrant and full of health and vigor in a way that their North American peers lack. A relaxed lifestyle and fresh homecooked meals. Food grown from the soil toiled by their very own hands brings pride to their hearts, nourishes their body and souls in a way we in the United states have either lost or will never know. Their zest and energy shine through when you greet them and don’t you dare for a second think you can call them old. Such mistakes may result in a twenty minute conversation on how young at heart they are. When they are through with you, you will feel like you are the old one for not having such zest for life. This is no resort tour bus ride through experience. Visit the awesome caribbean island of Grenada in the most intimate way during the high peak carnival season and the energy and vibrations are so intoxicating you can hardly stand still. The radio stations play the latest carnival songs getting everyone prepared for the season. From street shows to paid arena performances every event is enjoyed to its maximum. To understand uninhibited and unrestrained self expression through dance is to be a part of the local culture. Music is the life blood of the people and they are no bystanders of their own culture by far. When the DJ says move to the left you had better move to the left or else the stampede of dancers the equivalent of the running bulls in Spain is heading your way. If you don’t move you will be moved by the evervescent power of the jovial dancing crowd following every beat and direction of the singer. A new trend has started for the carnival season, where the blackening of the skin with different color paints, mimi jab jab parties in different local areas

0020

help keep the festivities. Little kids as well as the older ones get down and dirty while partying. Everyone is very comfortable in their skin and the gyration of little hips to calypso beats is so hilarious and intoxicating it is almost unbelievable that children can be this much comfortable with self expression through dance. And just to prove that this is no stand by culture if you were ever mistaken and decide you were wearing white and just going to observe the revelry you may just be returning to your home with your clothes completely soiled, because someone decides you should be having fun and not just looking at other have fun. Grenada a very small island with a very humbled people. Here there are no room for superstarsyou are welcomed to visit but take that with you when you leave. Performers and local artists are greeted on the streets and shown love and respect but nothing over the top. When you have attented the same school with an artist or you know exactly where they live or at least your family and their family are great friends how super can one get. As the carnival season approaches the out door concerts and events are not to be missed unless you really do not partake in the culture for religious or other reasons. At night there is an unusual dark, quiet peace that slowly creeps in. Just a few passerby on the road at night. Driving late is reduced to only about one car every 20 minutes or more. There are no police cars, ambulances or roaring ďŹ re trucks breaking the silence of the night, just total peace. If you are accustomed to the constant city noise it may take you a while to get accustomed to the silence. It is that space where your own thoughts are allowed to come forth with out the constant interruption of life around. Here going to bed at nine and ten is the norm. Some folks stay up later but mostly everyone is at home. Being on this small caribbean island gives you a sense of time being stopped. Some of the international music on the radio are renditions you may or may not have heard for years. It is all enjoyable.and

Artist Kenny Schraf teamed up with Watch maker Movado for one watch designs. Schraf had so much fun on the project he came up with several different designs the team over at Movado had so many to choose from they ended up picking out six different watches for the artist collection series which started back in 1987. The watches are part of Movado’s limited edition timepiece that launches this month. Prices for the individual watches start at $695 and the full set of six will be $3495. so if you are watching your pockets maybe these are not for you in these recession days.

This Bitch Love! It’s been 3 year since I decided to settle down with that special person. Well let’s say 3 years from my last confrontation with that bitch Love. Love, what a beautiful thing it is but so conniving and painful when it’s upset. March 1st, winter is still around but soon to break and after the month of love you got a million new relationships. I just so happen to get caught out there once more by sneaky lil love. I met the most perfect woman, well in my eyes she was everything I thought I wanted in a woman. We all know, no one is perfect and no one can ever live up to the standards of someone’s expectations. This wasn’t love at 1st sight but it was something special and I felt it. Okay let’s fast forward 5 months in and Bada BOOM! I’m smack in the middle of the grappling legs of Love. I mean the butterflies are flying all over my stomach and I get nervous every time I’m around this girl. I already know what your all thinking, 6 months and this guy is already in Love. Shit!, I know I was taken off guard too. Alright, back to the story the feelings inside of me were growing and were itching to burst out. Fellas, your all going to be disappointed at me., but your boy said it. That’s right I told this beautiful young lady I loved her; sad part about it she didn’t say it back. BAD NEWS! I should have saw the red lights going off telling me to back off. After the feeling’s were exposed it was over. It seemed as if the power of the relationship shifted from being neutral just to her. The 1 who didn’t say I love you. This chic backed off so hard I thought I told her I wanted to stalk her. I was even scared, thinking to myself it was definitely over. Once the emotions were exposed on my end as a man it was all downhill from there. The distance in the relationship begin growing and the paranoia set it in. Might sound crazy, but love is crazy, Beyonce said it best, lol. It’s better to have love and lost than have not loved at all. Very true, but what happens when your the 1 who is doing all the loving, Hmmm. It’s not worth it fellas so if your out there reading this right now the best thing for you to do is back off. Let her say those magic words 1st, and if you already said them, just keep it cool. A good friend told me the one who loves the most hurts the most, this is true as well. But you cannot be afraid to love because of the fear of pain. Yeah, I fell in love with someone who didn’t love me back, still going through it now. Who knows one day she might say it back, but then it might be too late and she’s the one fighting with that bitch Love. I want to hear from the ladies on this one. Why is it you ladies want a sentimental guy but the minute he gives his heart to you, you get scared. Should we always be the tough guy? Hit me up and tell me what you guys think. P.C.: (11:16:56 PM Tuesday)what did Ivan do to the pizza to make it shit? J.W.: We FINALLY got the staff here to order two Margherita pizzas instead of the god-fucking-awful cheese pizzas we used to get those things were so goddamn gross that it kept me from eating the free food, which would otherwise be the sole bright spot of these Tuesdays J.W.:So because last week we all pigged out and each took two slices each, Ivan the genius took it upon himself to tell the receptionist to order one Margherita pizza and one cheese pizza today. Why? Because the cheese pizzas are bigger! And so they’ll last longer! Now, there’s an empty Margherita pizza box in the conference room and an intact, cold, rigid cheese pizza still entombed in its container right next to it thanks a fucking bunch, Ivan P.C.: some people lmao...really truly hysterical the logos of some peeps, he was trying to do right by everyone-too funny J.W.: the road to hell is paved with idiotic intentions P.C.: spoken like a true stoic
