W O R K I N G PA L A C E A New Form Of Education

Working Palace is situated on the edge of THU(Tunghai University) second Campus. The site fronts Taiwan Boulevard (named Zhonggang Road was connection bewteend City and Harbor of Taichung);it is not only the most congested traffic artery but the supply chain of all metroplitan area of Taichung. Owing to the site condition, the school expects to create a new opening surface to embrace the society and neighborhood nearby. Furthermore, the advantage of the loaction provides a potentiality to generate the industry-academia cooperation area. The specific characteristic of the site makes it become the educational-lab. " Working Palace is a ne w form of education" we said.

The source of the concept comes from the pragmatic phenomenon dealing with the problem of the education standardization and the crisis of population decline in Taiwan. The students population decreases 2-3% in THU per years. And it cause a serious consequence that most of new buildings is unused in the campus. However, it is difficult that schools still has to erect the new building to build up favorable image to the society. If we are able to make a space adapt to the fluctuation of students population, it will be the answer of the issue we meet. In order to reach the vison we set, re-programing the space requirement is the main task initially. The school requires 15000m² for educational using, 10000m² for alumni house and 5000m² for commercial spaces. Divided the education spaces into two parts, a infrastructure area and additional structure area. Comprised of metal and wood workshop, degital worshop(CNC&3D printing), discussion rooms and multifuctional spaces, infrastructure area is the fundation in this project. All the activities related with working, discussing, producing and crafting occurs in the infrastructure area. Besides, the growing of additional area necessitates the functional assistance from the infrastructure area. The additional area is regarded as an active facade in the project. The position of the additional area is near to Taiwan Boulevard. This area is used for constructing the units for static activities. However, the quantity of all units are variable because it depends on the demands from the user including the facaulties in university and the busniess about industry-academia cooperation. The additional area is a reflectoin of the school inside. The varios activities from the different faculties and business collaboratoin are displayed and projected to the main way in Taichung City. 4

URBAN COURTYARD The Rebuild Of Neighborship in Urban Housing

Taipei City, the most populated city in Taiwn, is threaten by serious residential problems. To resolve the complication, Taipei government plans to develope a series of public housing as a consequence. Most of the public housing is high-rise building following the feature of high population density in Taiwan. Although it is able to solve the imperative living requirement efficiently, it dissolves the possibility of the interaction between those who live in the neighborhood as well. Built the quality of public spaces and reconnecting the nieghborship, which is crucial for the newcomer form the minority, is the crux in this project. In traditional Chinese culture, courtyard is a place which embodies the family and neghiborship between the relative. The form is composed by three or four solid buildings in right angle so that it can protect the family from outside and enhance the relationship of inside at the same time. To create the courtyards, the 9000m² area is divided into six void spaces by four rectangular boxes that includes all residence units in the program. The viod spaces between the boundaries and buildings are connected continuously because the ground floor of four buildings is pulled up to the first floor level. It means all the public spaces and facilities on the ground floor are available for the habitants. These spaces also become the different sizes of courtyards so that the verious exterior activities or events are able to take place in the project. Stepping into the buildings, the first view is a long and wild stairs from the first floor straight to the roof top. Instead of setting the functional staircases in the back of buildings as usual, we turn the staircases into a stair line which is not only adjancent to the public spaces on each floors but exhibited to the courtyards –the largest public spaces in the neighborhood. The hierarchy of the public spaces, it is a scenario which starts from urban, via the courtyard in the neighborhood, through the main stairs, ending at the small public cells next to the stairs. This space script clearifies the properties of activities in the project, and it also becomes the basis of selecting the finest position for activities.

THE STORYBOARD HOUSE An Experiment For The Prototype Of The Living

The house is situated on the corner across from a substation, enclosed by the street and the houses nearby, in the residential area of Fu'an neighborhood , characterized by 20th street house in a classical "Taiwanese" landscape which produced uneven skyline. In this case, configuration is the crux to clarify the rule of construction at the begining. However, it is not only the exterior shape or molding practice but to create and define a new living style in residence - the cornerston in architecture. The prototype of the unit for the house is a T-shape model which is combined with three L-form bars in three dimensions. Its characteristic creates three kinds of spaces; a virtical extension corner, an aisle under eaves, a open cantilever platform. To organize these isolated elements into a more coordinated and systematic building is a subject afterwards. The combinations of these units cosist of three types, which means the actions to assemble the individual units. These actions are the stacking and the splitting. Stacking units is the action to extend the vertical dimension. However, it is not heaping up the units without any principles. The T-shape unit donates two mutually perpendicular lines on plan view to build up the basement of structure wall. Therefore, on the top of the first unit, there are two options or lines to plan on the next. This process creats an opportunity to diversify the form because the feature of the geometry enables the unit whereon the first level to spin a right angle and still seize on the first unit. Thence, the structure wall is able to extend to higher levels. Splitting units means the separation of sigle unit. The unit is combined with three L-form bars. Each tube is isolated that it is able to be shifted to creat a gap between these bars. The width of these gap spaces might from 120cm to 150cm. Apparently, the scale of these spaces is used to set the stairs and the storages. In the building, the ground floor is the pilotis for storage and a garage, there are three entrances to the main floor; one is on the back of the garage, leading people to the video room between ground floor and main floor , another is a scissors stairs connecting with each floor in the southern side of the house, and the other is the main stairs which split the bonded units. The main stair is able to define and divide the public and private area. Additionally, the spaces are fragmented by the units because of the combination of these different types. Hence, who walks through the stairs to the public or individual spaces will catch the visual experience just like a storyboard in a movie.

Two units set into double rhomb that the midst of two units enable to raise the possiblility of people gathering because of its overlapping area.

In this process, the model is almost complete. Each space starts to develop the relationship by the horizontally overlapping area. These area is capable of being the aggregation for the family. Accordingly, a specific phenomenon, the privacy space turn inside out, shows up.

STRUCTURE

structure model

The structure in this case is uncomplicated. The structural wall supports the weight of whole building, The flat slab floor bears the extension of family activities.

PROJECT POST-POMPIDOU The Redifinition of Pipes System in Architecture

Project Post-Pompidou is an experiment of the pipe line system in architectural realm. Inspired by Pompidou Centre, the exhibiton hall built by Renzo Piano and Richard Roger in 1977, the Project Post-Pompidou tries to stretch the possibility of the concept in Pompidou Centre which is inside out, turning the inward architectural elements such as drainage system, electricity system, conveying equipments to the outward of the building. This idea in 1977 expressed an impressive facade performance, but these tubes and pipes were still a flat graphic that projected on the facade. Therefore,as an extended version of Pompidou Centre, the project aims to develope the spatial system which bases on the pipe line system to make these pipes construct the spaces. The prototype of this project is a hook shape metal tube with 10cm in diameter. The geometry of this item supply a connection between two dimension because the difference of the angle between two extreme points is a right angle, so the item is able to rotate itself when there has another item to connect. The part of curve in the hook gives spaces to increase the areas to be attached. The single pipe is not strong enough to load the weight above so that the item is copied 4 times then arranged around the center of the original item. As a result, the connecting surface of items group looks like a cross with 5 point to link with the next group. To accumulate the items efficently and logically, the bounding box is the most appropriate tool to define the method of accumulation. The scale of item has to adjust to a proper preportion so that the boundaries of bounding box is able to fit in a mathematical relationship. The final ratio of the width to length of item is 3:2. That proportion makes the combination of the items are capable of being installed in a bounding box with 40cm x40cm x 40cm. The main difference between the each pipe line system in an architectrue is the usage. The usage, the fuction and the contents in the pipes influence the material, the size and the form. To adapt to the reality, the pipes are divided into several series, the drainage series, the water supply series, the electricity series and the spatial series. Basically, these series share the same prototype, but the center parts are different because of the function. For an example, the drainage system has to discharge the wastewater as soon as possible. Too much corners occuring in routes planing of the drainage are unacceptable. Thus, the center pipe of drainage bunch enlarges the scale to fit the function(from 10cm changing to 15cm diameter). The multiple scale and the function of these pipes will define the order of construction in the spaces. Because the seqence of construction is start from the drainage and water supply systems, the electircity system secondly, the spatial lastly. The hierarchy also becomes the structure to develope the self-standing pipes line systems. 22
