The Canadian Cancer Society says 27 Daffodil Pin fundraising boxes have been stolen from Lower Mainland businesses this month. Sixteen of the stolen boxes went missing in Chilliwack—where just last November, a rash of poppy box thefts were reported. During “Daffodil Month,” the Canadian Cancer Society distributes the bright yellow pins to be worn in support of those affected by cancer. The campaign is a major fundraising initiative EB IRST for the society, First reported on w h i c h s a y s chilliwacktimes.com between $5,000 and $10,000 have been stolen by thieves who have targeted the boxes. “It truly is a shameful act,” said Ron Kuehl, the Canadian Cancer Society’s vice-president of revenue development. “It’s really discouraging.” This is the fourth year for the daffodil campaign, and Kuehl said this year’s theft problem is abnormal.

Trip 62 years in the making BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com

Veteran’s return part of armistice celebration

ixty-two years after he sailed across the international date line en route to war, a Chilliwack veteran is in South Korea this week to commemorate the armistice that halted the Korean War. Marvin Johnston was 20 when, as a field engineer with the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group, he shipped out for Korea. He served for a year in Korea, where he engaged in the standard wartime engineering: maintaining roads, building ferries, and laying and removing mines. Johnston came back to Canada in 1952 and served for nearly 29 years in the military—his final posting was in Chilliwack—before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1977. But he hadn’t been back to Korea since that 17-day sailing voyage 62 years ago this week.

Johnston flew to Korea Saturday. The day before he was to leave—Friday—he spoke to the Times about his excitement for the trip. “It’s going to be tremendous,” he said, “because when we moved forward in April or early May of 1951, we moved forward through Seoul [and] it was a ghost town. He continued: “We never saw a soul. Everybody was in hiding in the basements or up in the hills hiding. And now it’s a metropolis. “I’m looking forward to [seeing] the changes there. It’s going to be interesting.” Johnston wasn’t fretting about the bluster coming from North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-Un, who had been threatening nuclear war in the weeks leading up to the trip. (The armistice signed 60 years ago didn’t actually end the Korean War.

Majority of candidates will talk, but not sign, online water declaration Excalibur Party and Green Party only ones to commit BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

C

hilliwack’s next all-candidates debate for the provincial election will be short one BC Liberal candidate. Hosted by the WaterWealth Project, the meeting is scheduled for April 30 at Sto:lo Nation, and all the candidates have confirmed they’ll be there except Chilliwack Liberal hopeful John Martin. WaterWealth director Sheila Muxlow said Martin had told her all-candidates meetings weren’t the best use of his campaign time because they are usually just a “place for people to throw dirt at each other.” She said his fellow local BC Liberal, Chilliwack-Hope candidate Laurie Throness, was also hesitant to accept the invitation but has since confirmed. “He mentioned he was a little worried about being beaten up,” Muxlow said. “I don’t know if it speaks to the style of the Liberal party at the moment, where they’re a little bit scared to be confronted by the constituencies that they seek to represent, especially on issues of water.” Launched in March, WaterWealth is a local nonpartisan, non-profit water conservation group working to protect local rivers, lakes and groundwater by pushing for local control over decisions that will impact water. Last week the group released a declaration, calling on local residents to vote for local candidates who will do the most to protect water. The document further calls for 100 per cent community control over decisions that affect local water and strong laws to protect it from pipeline spills, gravel mining, private power projects and agricultural runoff. The declaration had garnered 743 online signatures as of Wednesday afternoon, and WaterWealth organizers are challenging candidates to sign on as well. All but two, however, have told the Times they won’t be doing that. “Rather than signing campaign pledges, I am committed to the platform of the BC Liberal Party, which promises to consult on the Water Sustainability Act this year with a view to passing it in 2014,” Throness wrote in an email. “This Act will protect B.C. aquifers and drinking water resources while providing industry with a framework under which drinking water allocations are made. Without doubt Waterwealth will be welcome to participate in these consultations.” His reply was echoed by Martin. Aimed at updating B.C.’s 100-year-old Water Act, the Water Sustainability Act was promised by then-Premier Gordon Campbell in 2008 and was supposed to be in place by 2012. “There was a chance, I guess, at the last sitting that they could have passed some stuff, but they didn’t, so here we are,” University of Victoria ecological governance expert Oliver Brandes told the Times. “They’re basically talking about finishing some of the business that they had already committed to.” Although an update of the Water Act is long overdue and the government has promised provisions on key issues like ground

water regulation, legal protections for minimum stream flows and improved water governance, Brandes was unimpressed by the local BC Liberals’ response to the WaterWealth declaration. “This is a pretty generic commitment and does not really address the issues,” he said. “What WaterWealth is trying to do is catalyze a new approach to governance. It is not clear that the contemplated act by the Liberals would do this or whether it would be a status quo kind of update. Asking for a clear commitment about what kinds of changes would be emphasized and to new forms of meaningful local engagement on decisions is the key.” Brandes also took issue with local BC NDP candidates who declined to sign on to WaterWealth’s declaration because they said 100 per cent control of water-related decisions isn’t feasible. “The call for ‘100 per cent community control,’ when we are talking about something like the Fraser River watershed and others in our region, is not really practical or possible,” Chilliwack-Hope incumbent Gwen O’Mahony wrote in an email to the Times. “These waters are subject to First Nations rights, federal and provincial government jurisdiction and, in some situations, local government jurisdiction. We need broad collaboration to solve these problems and that goes beyond ‘100 per cent community control.’” Chilliwack BC NDP cand i d a t e Pa t t i Ma c A h o n i c emailed a similar response. “I think it just lacks vision,” Brandes said of their response. “My job is to look at these different models from around the world. We see a number of different developments that this notion of community control is not only possible, it’s a natural evolution. It really represents the next generation of sustainable water management.” Muxlow, however, is willing to give candidates the benefit of the doubt. “I think what needs to happen is more education with the candidates on what we mean by community control specifically,” she said. “The idea of community isn’t separate from the idea of First Nations participation or the idea of collaboration between communities within a watershed.” The only two candidates who said they would sign on to WaterWealth’s declaration were Chilliwack Green Party candidate Kim Reimer and BC Excalibur Party hopeful Michael Halliday. “I believe wholeheartedly that every community has the right to make decisions about issues that affect them, especially issues that affect things as important as our local waters,” Reimer wrote. Chilliwack BC Conservative candidate Chad Eros, meanwhile, said he won’t sign on to the declaration because of a commitment he has made to stay separate from specific groups while seeking a public office but added that he thinks “the movement to ensure responsible stewardship of the source of life, water, is essential and should be acknowledged as legitimate.” Chilliwack-Hope BC Conservative candidate Michael Henshall did not respond to emails from the Times.

Think about none of the above I

’m going to bang that drum again. It’s same drum I’ve been banging on during every major election for years. And I’m going to keep banging on it until someone listens—and hears. There’s something missing from the ballots that are presented to us at the polling booths during federal and provincial elections. (Actually, it’s missing from civic election ballots, too, when we’re choosing school trustees and mayors and councillors, but it’s usually not as critical, because of the wider variety of choices we usually have.) There’s a choice that we’re all denied, and it’s to the detriment of the whole democratic process. We need one more box that we can check off (technically, in Canada, we are supposed to use check marks, not Xes to indicate our choices - but the rules also accept any “obvious intention”). That extra box belongs at the bottom of the list of candidates. And it should read: “None of the Above.” We need to be able to give voice to our dissent—when it is warranted—without spoiling our ballots, which is technically illegal and logically foolish. Even if they don’t throw you in jail (I haven’t heard of it ever actually happening) for spoiling your ballot when you really feel you should have the choice to vote for “None

BOB GROENEVELD

Be Our Guest of the Above,” it’s a completely useless, senseless gesture. If you have even ever bothered to check the “Spoiled Ballots” column in a final ballot tally, you probably thought exactly what everyone else does: “It’s amazing how many people don’t even have enough intelligence to mark a ballot properly.” Be honest. No one thinks, “Wow. Those people were probably disenchanted with the choices available to them and spoiled their ballots purposely to lodge their protest.” And if you exercise the only other realistic alternative—stay home—you’re just another one of those apathetic slobs who can’t be bothered to make the effort to study your choices and make a valuable decision. Either way, you don’t count. You’re either stupid or lazy, or both. But if you could put your check mark in a box beside the words, “None of the Above,” there would be no mistaking your intentions. You considered the options open to you. You thought about the choices available. You weighed all

the qualifications and experience offered by all the candidates. And you decided to take your ballot into a polling booth, picked up the pencil provided, and registered the preference to which you rationally arrived. You did not give way to a default position—you actively chose “None of the Above.” No one can dispute it. No one can deny or misconstrue your intent (or your discontent). “None of the Above” could be an important way for a lot of people—particularly in this election—to actively participate in the democratic process. You don’t like one party and never have? You don’t have to hold your nose to vote for another candidate that has no appeal for you. You can’t vote for your party’s candidate because you can’t stand the leader? Or vice versa? “None of the Above” can’t win an election—but it sends a clear message. If there are few votes for “None of the Above” in your riding, clearly you are in the minority. Too bad. But if “None of the Above” is a hugely popular choice in any riding, the politicians and their parties will have to take notice. Or someone else will recognize the opportunity for a better choice. ◗ Bob Groeneveld is the editor of the Langley Advance.

t always seems so utterly incomprehensible or how a human being can deliberately seek to injure innocent children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. Whether the destruction is wrought with homemade bombs or manufactured assault rifles or whether there is a political motive or a motive born out of a troubled and ill mind: It matters little as we stand in shock watching how, in one terrible moment, a cheering, happy, jubilant crowd can be rendered into a mass of maimed, moaning victims. And like others who stood in shock watching the tragedy unfold, our minds scramble to try and remember if we know anyone who was running in the Boston Marathon. “Did they go?” turns to, “Are they OK?” which in turn becomes, “Thank God, they’re safe.” Of the roughly 2,000 Canadians who ran in the marathon, about 200 were from B.C., and probably about a dozen were from Burnaby and New Westminster. To our knowledge, all of those local runners, were uninjured physically. But, as history reminds us, anyone who has had the misfortune to witness or be a part of such trauma is never left emotionally unscathed. But what we hope to remember and carry out of these tragedies, whether they’re deliberate such as the Boston bombing, or, perhaps, accidental such as the fertilizer factory explosion in Texas, is the certitude that there are far more heroes than villains in our world. If we were shaken to our cores by the thought of a wilful attacker, we are strengthened by the photos and stories of first responders and bystanders who rushed to the aid of those injured, putting themselves at risk. In Texas, some of the dead are firefighters. Many were volunteers who rushed to put out the fire and were caught in the explosion. In Boston, the video of police and paramedics rushing into a smoke-filled area littered with melted metal, reminds us of the goodness, bravery and compassion of human beings, something that is sorely needed in times like this.

It was a life-changing raffle win

Editor: As the lucky winner of the G.W. Graham 2009 Honda Civic Grad Car, I just wanted to thank all those involved for giving my family a lifechanging moment. So . . . thank you to the students and Grad Committee at G.W. Graham and to Darren Bosch and his staff from Murray Honda for their exceptional service and enthusiasm. As well, we would like to thank the other generous sponsors which were Fix Auto, 604 Autosound, Fountain Tire, 89.5 The Hawk, Ace Signs, Minuteman Press and Sherwin Williams. Fortunately for my 16 year old son Eric, he split the cost of the ticket with me so this car will be his to drive to and from school and work plus in the near future to Vancouver for post-secondary education. My 19-year-old son Blake has shown kindness and support for his brother and shares in the excitement over this event. We are very grateful. Thank you. Tracy Gray Chilliwack

Volunteers appreciated Editor: Re: National Volunteer Week, April 21 to 27. As we celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 21 to 27), Canadian Blood Services thanks the 17,000 volunteers who dedicated 215,000 hours of their time in the last year to help support Canada’s blood system. In B.C. and the Yukon Region, 1,800 volunteers invested nearly 35,000 hours to assist in more than 2,300 community and clinic events that enable our organization to keep expenses low. Nationwide, our volunteers are involved in leading positive change in a variety of ways, all of them vital: They co-ordinate and host blood donor clinics, greet and assist donors, promote key campaigns throughout the year, and publicly speak about the need for blood and stem cell donation. Our volunteers provide considerable value to the donation experience, which

Denying public input at FVRD Editor: It seems to me it was a clear lack of interest on the part of the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) to hear input or questions from the public after they denied a delegation of regional community members from Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Langley to ask questions at the FVRD board meeting on April 23. The regional community group was made up of people who live near Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, and members of the PIPE UP Network. They decided to attend despite denial of their delegation, and attempted to ask questions during question period. One question was why the FVRD gave approval to Kinder Morgan to conduct

a study in Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park so quickly and without any conditions or public discussion. The company has stated its plan to build another oil pipeline through the Fraser Valley, but, as yet no application has been made to the National Energy Board for the project. Chairperson Sharon Gaetz cut off input from Abbotsford resident Lynn Perrin and Chilliwack resident Michael Hale. Members of the group were restricted to asking questions about the denial of the delegation, were called out of order when doing otherwise, and were directed to take their concerns to FVRD staff. Clearly, the FVRD Board is not interested in hearing from the public on this issue, or hearing the public question FVRD Board processes. When I came to the directors’ meeting, my main concern was about Kinder Morgan being given access to a protected area that is home to threatened and endangered species. Now I have an additional concern: Why is public input being denied? Jordan Wilson Chilliwack

Back to where they sacrificed Editor: Having the pleasure and privilege to serve as the Minister of Veterans Affairs has been one of the most rewarding periods in my life. Part of it has included leading several emotionally moving missions overseas with Canadian veterans. These missions take veter-

ans back to the places where they have fought and sacrificed on behalf of our grateful nation in the defence of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. This week, as part of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the hostilities of the Korean War, I have the distinct privilege to be travelling in the Republic of Korea with 36 Canadian veterans. These veterans were part of the more than 26,000 Canadians who served in Korea between 1950 and 1957. Of these, sadly, 516 gave their life in this fight for freedom. In returning to Korea, a modern economic and democratic power in Asia, these veterans have the chance to pay tribute to their comrades who never returned, while witnessing the fruits of their sacrifices-a proud nation that has grown from what they defended so passionately. While South Korea flourished as it embraced the values our veterans fought to defend, North Korea remains plagued by famine, brutality and tyranny. North Korea’s escalating rhetoric and threats against the west are a sobering reminder of how vital the Korean War was and remains in the defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and human rights. As part of this mission, we also have the privilege of visiting Canadian and Commonwealth cemeteries and the demilitarized zone. This trip in addition to our recently announced Korean War Veteran Certificate of Recognition and other events throughout the year is be part of our government’s efforts to proudly mark what we have designated as the Year of the Korean War Veteran. Lest we forget. Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie

Midgets win both games

T

he midget AAA Chilliwack Cougars swept a doubleheader Saturday against the Richmond Chuckers. The Cougars kicked things off with a 2-1 extra inning win, with pitcher Derek Riediger throwing a full game for the victory. Riediger struck out 16 while allowing seven hits, one earned run, and up just one walk. With two out in the eighth inning, Chilliwack mustered a single run, and then held off Richmond in the bottom of the frame. The Cougars registered eight hits, with Blake Peeling and Payton Nerbas each adding a double each. Game 2 saw the Cougars come out strong and put up three runs in the top of the first inning. The Chuckers tried to battle back, and scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings. But in the sixth, aided by a Richmond error, the Cougars extended their lead. The final run came when a wellplaced suicide bunt by Matt Ell allowed catcher Cohen Bogart to charge across the plate for the sixth and final run. Pitcher Mike Rogers threw for six innings, allowing five hits, two runs and three walks, while registering

Tuned up and ready to start racing OK

, I admit, I have had almost six months to get my car ready for the race season that begins this Saturday at Agassiz Speedway. However, I’m still in the “what if” mode. This is where a driver overthinks what needs to be done to their race car. “What if I adjust this, or change that?” or “What if this fails or isn’t tuned right?” And so on. You get the picture. Now it’s too late to really worry about that. I have to get myself into race mode and prepare for Saturday; forget the car and work on me. I figure the car is good to go, and now it’s time to work on some body and mind restoration, to rid myself of the cobwebs of winter. I’m a little disappointed in myself, having now come in “first loser”

ROBERT ADAMS

Speedway Report for two years in a row. (That’s second place for those numerically challenged.) I will have to step it up a notch this year. So what am I doing to prepare? Lately, I have taken to walking with my friend Ian up and down a mountain for seven kilometres in the morning. Well, truthfully, I rarely go, but I promise to do more to get myself into shape soon. After all I still have a couple of days left before I need to be sharp on the track. If you’re familiar with rac-

ing, you will know that if you have to have weight in the car, it should be positioned on the left side, so luckily we sit and drive from the left side of the car. But there is a point where too much leftside weight starts to bring down the suspension too much. I think I might need to lighten up the left side just a bit. And since I can’t take any more out of the car, I have to take it out of the driver. As for diet, I have slowly weaned myself off the assorted liquors, burgers, deep fried foods and the like over the winter, and have begun eating carrots, snow peas and grapes a lot more. Yum! There is nothing like a dry fibre, unbuttered diet bagel to replace your halfpound of bacon and eggs for breakfast. However, all these changes are supposed

to make me a quicker, more nimble (and smarter?) driver. I guess the proof will be in the pudding . . . literally and figuratively. Actually I have found that one of the best ways to get into shape is to let someone else do it for you. Marissa, another friend of mine, is the owner of a asthetics and bodycare treatment centre. I think this is one of the best training resources for drivers. I let her do the facial, massage and body prep work. I feel totally redone when she is finished. And if nothing else, I look spectacular when they take my picture at the finish line. So the plan is walk Thursday, facial Friday, and eat healthy Saturday morning. Now that’s three solid days of workout before the Saturday evening races. I should be in

top form. If anything goes wrong, it won’t be with me, it has got to be the car then. And I’m sticking with that story. By the way, it looks the speedway will have a brand new washroom facility completed for opening day. Running water, flush toilets: it just doesn’t get any better! Come on out Saturday evening, (weather permitting) and watch exciting racing in our Hornet division, street stocks, and sportsman and ministocks classes. Check the website for more www. agassizspeedway.com. ◗ Robert Adams races his Ford Probe at the Agassiz Speedway. He will be writing about the local racing scene for the Chilliwack Times throughout the summer again this year.

Faith Today

When a storm is good

BY MIKE VANDERKWAAK Heartland Fellowship

W

e have seen many storms. Last week’s dual bombings, a decade ago twin towers fell. There are untold stories of daily personal tragedies. I’ve been through a few storms, and I’m sure you have too. Nobody escapes the storms. This is why the story of Jonah is so important. He was in a storm that God used to save him. Why would God use a killer storm to save Jonah? The answer is simple: Jonah was running from God because God wanted him to help others who were in trouble. Frankly, it was inconvenient to Jonah to help others because he wanted a nice life, and he believed his idea of a good life was better than the one God had for him. The storm became God’s

staged intervention to help Jonah realize he was running from God. If you think it was the storm that saved Jonah you are mistaken. It was Jonah’s response to the God of the storm. There are many in this life who have come out of storms bitter instead of better. Why? Because they responded differently than Jonah. Jonah moved his thoughts from the storm onto God: “I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.” And right there Jonah stopped running. The intervention became a success. Years later there was a tragic event in Jerusalem. A tower called Siloam fell. Rock and brick unexpectedly

fell to the ground, and when the dust settled 18 people were dead. Another storm. Trying to make sense of the tragedy people asked, “Is the reason the tower fell on those people because they were worse sinners than others?” Jesus said, “No . . . unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” In those short words Jesus says, “My dear friends, please do not be so arrogant to assume people who have more tragedy in their lives must be worse people than you. My dear friends, nobody gets what they deserve.” Think of Jesus, the one who has given us our lives. We owe him every

ounce of our love and every bit of our allegiance and glory. Yet look how we live toward Him. We may acknowledge Him in a rather obligatory way, but the actual day-to-day way in which we run our own lives is not under His Lordship. Instead, we follow Jonah’s first move. We make all the decisions of our life to hinge on our own joy, our own satisfaction, our own pleasure, our own glory, and our own success. The pursuit of a nice life, at least by our definition. If God gave us what we deserve for the way we treated Him and each other, we’d be all lost at sea—wiped out by falling towers. Thankfully God

doesn’t do that. He is not like that. He is a merciful God. In the interruption of a storm there is a purpose that we can embrace or ignore. The purpose is to stop running, stop demanding a wonderful life, and worship the Lord, the God of heaven. Trust him. Until you get these truths down in your own heart, the world will be an awful place. Hold onto an unrealistic notion that you deserve a good life, and life will be hard and bitter. Admit your sin, and you’ll see God’s grace and love everywhere. Put your heart and mind on Jesus, the Lord and Savior of the universe, and you will find a merciful God who wants to save you in the storm.

How to select a customized hardwood floor in 4 easy steps (MS) - No other flooring option delivers the splendour, warmth and value of natural wood. Today there are countless colours available to choose from as well as different species, each with their unique characteristics. No matter the decor style of your home—modern, contemporary, zen, rustic or urban—today’s hardwood flooring manufacturers have something for every style and taste. In fact, one of North America’s leading manufacturers, Mercier Wood Flooring, boasts over 13 wood species and 74 rich colors and one can choose among over 2,000 options. “From natural rustic looks to cutting edge contemporary, we can offer so many colours, species, finishes, strip widths, and grades that the possibilities for personalizing your floor are almost endless,” explained Michel Collin, director of marketing for Mercier. Here are the four key steps to consider, according to Collin, to create a unique centrepiece hardwood floor that’s custom tailored for any interior space, from country home to urban loft. 1. Colour scheme Are you looking for something light or dark? Understated or with bold character? Choose the colour that best matches your decor from a wide variety of colors available in each species. For uniform hue and a clean look, opt for either “Select & Better” or “Premium” grades. If you enjoy more pronounced colour variation and wood with more character, you may prefer “Antique” or “Classic” grades.

Hanging Basket D•A•Y

2. Species From red oak, hard maple, yellow birch, white ash, white oak or Brazilian cherry, each wood species has its own personality and distinct look (grades and width) that comes across in its maturity, hardness, and durability.

BE THE ENVY of your neighbours with instant, professionally planted colour!

3. Gloss Depending on the species, you can choose between matte, semi-gloss and satin finishes. A matte, semi-gloss finish tends to project a more formal atmosphere; whereas the natural look of a satin finish will feel more casual and better disguise wear and tear. 4. Widths and textures Wider planks, which are becoming increasingly popular, tend to create a more casual rustic appearance, while narrow planks are more formal. Manufacturers, such as Mercier, are now offering 61/2” and even 71/4” boards in certain species. This is part of the emerging trend of the last few years where consumers are seeking more rustic looks for their hardwood flooring choices. Along with wider boards, another way this is achieved is with the latest use of different textures to give wood either a distressed look of barn wood, prominent knots or the natural lines of boards planed the old fashioned way. ◗ More information on the Nature Collection and the latest trends in wood flooring is available at www.mercierwoodflooring.com.

ing a spot, consider how much sunlight a location gets on a daily basis and the spot’s proximity to a water supply. If planting flowers, try to avoid planting in areas with heavy foot traffic so the flowers are less likely to be stomped. ◗ Get started before you plant. Preparing the soil a few weeks before you start planting can help the plants thrive down the road. Add some organic material, such as compost or fertilizer, to the soil roughly three weeks before planting. This helps the soil retain water and nutrients, which will help your garden thrive. ◗ Time your planting. When you plant is sometimes as important as what you plant. Some climates allow for yearround planting, but many do not. When buying seeds, the packaging might suggest what time of year to plant the seeds. Adhere to these suggestions or your garden might not grow much at all. In addition, keep in mind that many seedlings need significant light throughout the day in order to grow, so choose a time of year with ample daylight. ◗ Don’t forget to mulch. Mulch can be as aesthetically appealing as it is effective. Mulch retains soil, helping roots to grow stronger, while deterring bugs and preventing weed growth. And many gardeners find mulch adds visual appeal their garden, and does so in a very inexpensive way.

ardening is a rewarding hobby that many enthusiasts credit with helping to peacefully escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though gardening can be both relaxing and rewarding, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and the more time and effort a person devotes to his or her garden the more likely it is to be successful. Gardening can be a little daunting for beginners who have little or no experience planting flowers or vegetables. But gardening need not be so intimidating, especially for those beginners who adhere to the following tips aimed at helping novice gardeners start their gardens off on the right foot. ◗ Determine what you should plant. Where you live will go a long way toward determining what you should plant. While you can plant anything you can get your hands on, Agri-Food Canada has determined specific plant hardiness zones that indicate which plants are most likely to thrive in given locations. Maps of these zones can be found at www.agr.gc.ca. By adhering to the maps, gardeners can significantly increase their chances of growing successful gardens. ◗ Think location when beginning your garden. Beginners with large yards have the luxury of choosing the right location on their properties to start planting. When choos-

Asphalt Asphalt is an affordable paving material, which likely plays a role in its popularity among homeowners. Asphalt is also easy to install and requires little maintenance, two additional benefits to homeowners who don’t have much time to install or look after their driveway. Asphalt is made from a combination of concrete, gravel and tar, and though it’s easy and affordable to install, asphalt, as any kid can tell you, can get awfully hot under the summer sun. Asphalt can also crack rather easily, so homeowners must weigh its immediate affordability against the likelihood that perhaps it will need to be replaced sooner than other materials. Brick Brick is among the more expensive paving materials, as brick is a labour-intensive material to install. But brick allows homeowners to create distinctive patterns that can add quite

a bit to a home’s curb appeal. Once installed, brick driveways don’t require much maintenance, though cracked bricks will need to be replaced.

Cobblestone Cobblestone can be very pleasing to the eye, but that aesthetic appeal won’t come cheap. Among the more expensive paving materials, cobblestone can also be a handful to maintain, as weeds can penetrate the cobblestones rather easily. Loose or missing stones can be unsightly and will need to be replaced. Many homeowners who love the look of cobblestone choose to use it along walkways or on their patios, as these areas won’t require as much materials, saving both money and the time it takes to maintain the cobblestones. Concrete Concrete is perhaps the ideal paving material for the homeowner who wants to express his or her individuality. That’s because concrete driveways can be laid in a variety of colors and designs, adding a touch of personality in a place many homeowners likely thought such expression was impossible. Though affordable, concrete can fall victim to the elements, as extremely cold temperatures can cause the concrete to shift and ultimately crack. Concrete pavers can remedy this problem, though that will add to the overall cost of the project. Gravel A gravel driveway can give a home a historical look that few of today’s homes can boast. Gravel is an affordable material that requires little maintenance, though weeds can grow through gravel and must be removed to maintain the driveway’s appeal. Washout is a concern for some who want a gravel driveway, but edging the driveway with a material like timber or bluestone can prevent the gravel from washing away should heavy rains fall.

hen renovating a home, many homeowners look to increase the home’s curb appeal. “Curb appeal” is a term used to describe how the home’s exterior appears to buyers the moment they pull up to the curb. A home that impresses prospective buyers before they even go inside is said to have a strong curb appeal, and that curb appeal can add significant value to a home. Homeowners looking to improve the curb appeal of their home can do so in a variety of ways. One often overlooked yet effective way to make a home’s exterior more appealing is to revamp the driveway. Driveways may not be high on a homeowner’s renovation totem pole, but a cracked or unsightly driveway can give prospective buyers the impression that a home has not been properly taken care of. When addressing a driveway, homeowners have a host of paving materials at their disposal.

Always plant fresh seeds

Q: Last year only 20 per cent of my carrot seeds grew. How can I increase the germination rate? Kimie Takusagawa Email A: Carrots tend to have several problems with germination—sometimes all at the same time. First, the seed doesn’t keep well in storage, even if that’s only for one year. Seed stored in a refrigerator has a slightly better germination rate, but the safest tactic is always to plant fresh seed. Unfortunately the germination rate of carrots isn’t great anyway compared to the rate of most other vegetables. It’s best to plant twice as much carrot seed as you need. Also carrots germinate very slowly. This means that birds and anything else that eats carrot seed can clear it out before it gets around to sprouting. Birds are the most efficient carrot seed eaters. They will actually sit nearby, watch you planting it and scratch it up as soon as you’re gone. Row covers are a good protection against birds and also against slugs, which love munching on carrot seedlings. Just make sure you don’t have a slug or two already hiding in the soil

ANNE MARRISON

Green Thumb under the row cover. Q: I have so little yard so I’m going to do a couple of pots this year. Do you think I could put some peas in a pot and have them grow nicely? Donalda Madsen, Email A: Yes, you can grow peas in pots. But the size of the pot has to suit the height and the number of pea plants you’re going to grow in there. A deep pot is much better than a shallow one because peas like to stretch their roots down in cool soil. The lower part of the pot should be protected from heating up in hot sun. Half-barrels are best of all. But deep plastic pots that are 12” to 16” (30 to 40cm) wide are good homes for mediumheight pea plants. Some types of peas have been developed especially for containers. The plants and the peas they produce are relatively small, but you can be more sure of a crop with these than if you try to grow a tall pea that really needs more root space.

Snow peas or pod peas are an especially good bet because you can jump the gun and eat some pods first, or wait and eat the peas inside. West Coast seeds offers quite a few peas especially bred for containers. These include the heirloom shelling pea ‘Little Marvel’ described as having 4” pods containing from six to nine peas on bushes 12” to 18” (30-45 cm) tall . Another is ‘Paladio’ which has double pods on a 18” (45 cm) bush and doesn’t need trellising. Also offered is the Dwarf Grey Sugar’ snow pea with two-tone purple flowers, reddish leaves and stems and a height of 30” to 36” (76-90 cm) and the snap pea ‘Cascadia’ with plants about 2’ (60 cm) tall. Then there’s the ‘Sugar Ann’ dwarf snap pea with vines that also are 2’ (60 cm) long and don’t need trellising. Containers tend to dry out quickly. Make sure your peas get lots of water especially when they flower and pods develop. You don’t need highnitrogen fertilizer with peas, but they’d like an organic fertilizer containing phosphorus and potash. ◗ Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Business of the year 2012

You say tomato... we say

Mighty Mato!

Huge over the top grafted tomatoes are the latest and greatest this year! Grafted tomatoes are two plants joined together, the top plant is a heirloom and the bottom plant is a strong hybrid. The result is 50% bigger harvests of delicious tomatoes. The benefit of grafted tomatoes is that the rootstock has vigor and disease resistance, which increases water and nutrient uptake producing higher yields.

Little Mountain Garden Centre has 2 different types of grafted Tomatoes:

Bumper Crop & Mighty Mato

BUMPER CROP VARIETIES

Big Rainbow (big marbled beefsteak), Black Krim (very dark maroon beefsteak with rich flavor), Brandywine Pink (wins flavor contests), Brandywine Red (deep red tomatoes up to 2 lbs) Mortgage Lifter (legendary huge beef steak), San Marzano (thick and meaty for sauces or pastas)

MIGHTY MATO VARIETIES

Early Girl (early and dependable) Sun Sugar (candy sweet orange cherry tomatoes) Momotaro (sweet and tangy) Sweet million (sweet bright red cherry tomatoes)

Limelight Petunias 6 PACK

Limelight is early blooming and highly floriferous with a mounding habit. Lime Light is perfect for small pots and hanging baskets. Blooms in bright pink with a green trim.

Patchwork Impatiens

6 PACK Out of this world!

Low-maintenance impatiens will be happy in the shade. Dark green leafed plants are mounded, well branched and spreading, with non-stop flowers all season. A strong performer in shady baskets, mixed containers, planters and landscapes. You need to check out our 4 unique colors (shown Cosmic Orange).

Another grafted veggie sure to be a HUGE hit...

GRAFTED PEPPERS

Don’t miss having Big Bertha (perfect for stuffing or in salads) or Jalapeno grafted peppers in your garden this year.

Don’t forget your tomato food! Always use tomato food that contains calcium. Tomato Blossom End Rot is caused by lack of calcium in the tomato plant and makes the fruit inedible.

Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Police have one suspect CANCER, from page 1 “It’s very significant and it definitely has been focused within specific areas of the province,” he told the Times. Kuehl said the thefts also do a disservice to the tireless work of his organization’s volunteers during April. “A lot of volunteers really spend a huge amount of time on helping us with the daffodil campaign,” he said. “The funds that were donated to by the public have obviously been intended to be used by the society to support cancer patients and their families.” Kuehl is asking the public to pitch in throughout the rest of the month to help make up for the stolen money. There are around 900 pin boxes located at Fraser Valley businesses. Mounties are investigating the incidents and are reviewing surveillance footage from some locations. “We do have a suspect for at least one of the thefts,” RCMP spokesperson Const.

Tracy Wolbeck said in a press release. “At this point, it is too early to indicate if there is a connection between the thefts but it’s not likely that it is the same person responsible for all

27.” Last November six poppy containers were stolen from Vedder Road businesses. One person later pleaded guilty to theft in connection with one of the thefts.

If I graduate, I’ll give her the credit.” Eddison is now a straight-A student, with only math, her toughest course so far, standing between her and graduation. But she’ll finish that too. “I have to,” she said. “I’d have to leave town forever if I didn’t.”

News PIPELINES, from page 4 I never knew there was that old Kinder Morgan line going through the farmer’s field,” Major told the Times. “I’ve lived there in Chilliwack since 1967 and I didn’t even know where the pipeline went until less than a year ago.” With the help of the Wilderness Committee, the working group has also created a map that shows the route of the pipeline and schools along the way. In Chilliwack, four schools are “red-flagged” as being within 200 metres of the pipeline and a further

Pipeline runs underneath Watson’s sports field 15 are “black-flagged” as “within blocks” of the route. The closest it runs to a school is at Watson elementary, where the pipeline runs under the back sports field. The line similarly runs near the back sports field at Vedder middle. The other two close schools include Unsworth and John Calvin elementary, however, Major looked at the map and actually thinks Mt. Slesse is within 200 metres of the pipeline at the spot it crosses Tyson Road. In the questionnaire, the group

GORE-TEX

asks if respondents have heard about the pipeline, if they know about what is shipped in the pipe and if the schools have emergency procedures specific to a spill of something like diluted bitumen. Kinder Morgan posted a response Monday on the Trans Mountain project website to the question of pipeline safety and schools. “Living or being active near our pipeline does not pose a health risk,” the message said, in part. “Where the pipeline runs near schools, we are open to working

with individual schools or districts to fully support their safety efforts and ensure their emergency response plans and ours are co-ordinated.” Kinder Morgan has proposed a $5.4-billion expansion of its 1,150kilometre pipeline that runs from Edmonton to Burnaby, increasing capacity from the current 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 890,000 bpd. While the company maintains safety is paramount and spills are rare, there have been incidents in recent years. In January 2012 a holding tank at the company’s Sumas Mountain

terminal site in Abbotsford was the site of a 110,000-litre leak. There have also been two other recent leaks on the pipeline, including the 2007 rupture of the pipeline in a Burnaby neighbourhood, which sprayed nearby homes with crude oil after a contractor struck the line. Retired Burnaby teacher Mary Hatch was one of those evacuated in 2007 and is also involved in the pipeline/school working group. ◗ For details on the project from Kinder Morgan, visit www.transmountain.com. And for information on other schools near the pipeline between Hope and Burnaby visit www.pipe-up.net.

Barbeque lollipops- a potentially lethal health threat every pet owner should know about.

I recently became aware of new type of danger that you should be made aware of, now that the weather is getting warmer and we are all outdoors cooking up our dinner, this is an important warning. I saw Jazz on emergency. He had been vomiting and had an extremely sore abdomen. By the time he was seen in clinic, he was in shock. The x-rays showed gas distension in the intestines which often means that something is stuck. Not all “foreign bodies” show up on xrays but the gas pattern was worrisome. I advised Jazz’s owners I thought it necessary to go to surgery and explore the abdomen. Mr and Mrs Jones agreed and we prepared him for surgery. Sure enough, upon entering the abdomen, the intestines were ballooned with gas and, like I’ve done a million times on an exploratory, I began “running the intestines” looking for the obstruction. To my dismay, none could be found. I looked and looked but found nothing. The pancreas looked a bit angry and parts of the intestines looked inflamed but there was certainly no foreign body. I was ready to close up Jazz when the words of my large animal medicine professor began ringing in my ear “more things are missed from not looking than from not knowing”. So, I broadened my exploration. I looked at the bladder and the kidneys and the pancreas and the adrenal glands and so on. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Suddenly, when I was feeling blindly around the liver something sharp poked me. The tissue in a dog’s abdomen is so soft that when something sharp is felt it really stands out. I couldn’t visualize that area of the dog’s liver so I asked my assistant to help pull the stomach and intestines back and to my surprise a piece of wire was seen poking out of the liver. It was actually very difficult to pull out, but we succeeded. I sewed Jazz up and he made an uneventful recovery. It is here the story gets interesting; bear with me and keep reading… When Jazz was discharged, I showed the piece of wire to the owners and explained that it must have migrated out of the stomach and now had been lodged in the liver. This was poking the pancreas and making Jazz very ill. I asked her if she knew what it could be from. It didn’t take her long to answer “that is from our barbeque brush”. To be honest I thought it rather unlikely and didn’t think much of it again until she came back in with Jazz for his sutures to be removed. She took me aside and told me that soon after getting Jazz home she was watching TV and a program came on talking about how many people get seriously ill and can die from barbeque brush bristles getting into burgers or steaks and inadvertently ingested. They are seriously thinking of outlawing barbeque brush bristles as they are a major health threat. If you “Google” it, you will read all sorts of medical horror stories. The problem with pets is, they love to lick the drippings off the brush. If you are anything like me you use the nice little hook on the end of the brush to hang it vertically off the handle of your barbeque. These brushes must look like a delectable lollipop from heaven to your pet, just dripping with yummy sweet barbeque sauce. No wonder they lick it. So, the message is simple. Watch where you leave your barbeque brush (maybe buy a bristle- free one) and if you feel a strange pain in your stomach, I’m sorry I can’t help you- only your pet.

The third annual Rock Out Cancer Benefit Dance Party is set to go at the Evergreen Hall April 27 in support of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The Rock Out Cancer Benefit Dance Party is a fundraiser presented by Team Rock the $#@! Out of Cancer to raise money for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. This is the team’s fourth year participating in the ride, which takes bicyclists from Cloverdale to Seattle over two days. To date the team has raised $110,000 for cancer research. The team consists of 16 members, nine of whom are from Chilliwack, and their goal for 2013 is to raise $50,000. The dance party is the team’s largest fundraising event and is this year expected to exceed the $15,000 raised in 2012. This year’s Rock Out Cancer show promises to get you dancing all night long with artists such as the Essential Heart tribute band, Barracuda, the Vacationers, Mick Dalla-Vee, Rock Therapy, Andrew Putt and Rachael Chatoor. Barracuda is a Heart tribute band and will often have original members of Heart attend and even participate at their shows. LAVALLEE - Schyler Grace

went to be with the Lord on April 21, 2013. She was born on March 29, 2013 at 8:20 pm at seven pounds, nine ounces in Chilliwack, BC. She was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and a congenital heart defect and quickly moved to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver where she spent the next twenty three days valiantly fighting for her life. The doctors were amazed at her strength, and how hard she battled against so many difficulties. In such a short time this beautiful angel inspired and touched many lives, and although she is in a better place she will be dearly missed. She is survived by loving parents Regan and Leah Lavallee. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 2 pm at the Chilliwack Alliance Church, 8700 Young Rd. Public visitation 1pm -1:45pm. In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of Schyler can be made to the BC Children’s Hospital, which gave amazing care to Schyler and her family. Schyler’s tribute page can be found at: https://secure.bcchf.ca/ SuperheroPages/ main.cfm?Event=WOT& Member=32706

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Patrick Gene O’Brien. Patrick passed away peacefully at 18 years of age on April 19th , 2013 with his family at his side. Patrick was born in Prince George, BC, the eldest son of Mark & Raylene O’Brien, brother to Devin O’Brien and grandson to Michael & Marjorie O’Brien and Gene & Shirley Elliott. Patrick had resided in Prince George, BC, Edmonton, AB and finally Chilliwack, BC. Patrick was enrolled in Grade 12 at GW Graham Secondary School in Chilliwack, BC. Patrick was a “Drama Kid” with the biggest heart, and was full of love, life and joy. His smile could light up a stage or a room, and his laugh could bring a smile to all. During Patrick’s year long battle against Ewing’s Sarcoma, he received a huge outpouring of kindness and support from family, friends, and caregivers. Mark, Raylene & Devin would like to thank all of Patrick’s relatives & friends, the staff at BC Children’s Oncology Unit, Coast Hotels & Resorts, Signode Canada, the staff at GW Graham Secondary School, The Make a Wish Team, Grandpa & Grandma Elliott, Grandma O’Brien, Dryden Douglass, Bobbi & Ethan Bradley, The Meldrum Family, Saturday Night Live, New York and the staff at Canuck Place. At the request of Patrick, there will be no funeral service. However a CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE will be held Sunday May 5, 2013 1pm to 4pm at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel in Chilliwack, BC. All family, friends, and caregivers are invited to share their love, memories, and respect for Patrick at this event. Crying is optional but laughing & smiles are mandatory, as Patrick put it. If you wish to contact the family concerning this event, please email them at mrobrien@shaw.ca. In memory of Patrick and in lieu of flowers, Patrick requested that all who attend his CELEBRATION OF LIFE bring their cheque books and donate to the organizations that gave him the most support & enjoyment in his last days – BC Children’s Oncology Unit, Make a Wish Program, and Canuck Place, Children Hospice. I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always As long as I’m living, My baby you’ll be.
