A single-vehicle rollover on Highway 1 triggered a traffic jam Tuesday morning. A motorcyclist unable to stop for the slowdown in traffic died in a subsequent crash.

Although a single lane eastbound remained open and other drivers used the Annis Road onramp to bypass the crash site, motorcyclist is dead after a pair of traffic on the highway began to back up. James Leo Gracie, 53, is facing eight counts of breaching the order. The offences are alleged to have been committed in Chilliwack on March 1 and 29 and May 11 and 14, according to online court records. Gracie has a long criminal history dating back to 1992. He has previously been found guilty of abusing children of both sexes and adult women. Those crimes netted him the long-term supervision

Gracie has already twice been found guilty of breaching his supervision order, which prohibits him from being in contact with children, attending places where children may be present, associating with sex workers and possessing or consum-

He was released again, but in 2010 he went missing from his halfway house, prompting the Vancouver Police Department to warn the public that Gracie posed “a risk of significant harm to the safety of female and male children, as well as female adults.” According to News 1130, Gracie was subsequently spotted “lurking in some bushes” in Langley and arrested. He was later convicted of being unlawfully. A year later, Gracie was arrested again and charged with breaching his supervision order again. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced last May to six more months of prison.

Stars align for Flight Fest
BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
Benefiting from Comox air show
n the ground and in the sky, this weekend’s Chilliwack Flight Fest is shaping up to be one of the biggest in years, thanks in large part to another air show hundreds of kilometres away. Not only will the Chilliwack airport play host to an ultra-rare Spitfire fighter and B-25 bomber, but Sunday’s pre-show will feature flybys by the Snowbirds aerobatics team, a CF-18 Hornet fighter and a military CC-150 transport jet. “This year’s flight fest is going to be one of the most exciting we’ve had in a long time,” organizer Ray Firkus told the Times. “The stars are aligning. We’re getting a lot of stuff that we typically don’t see here.” Those aligning stars include a major air show at CFB Comox on Vancouver Island and a Discovery Channel documentary crew that is filming professional airshow performers and organizers. “This year our lineup is pretty spectacular,” Firkus said. With major performers already in B.C. for the Comox show, the Chilliwack Flight Fest—which is free, unlike
the Comox show—was able to hire duo of Bud and Ross Granley. Firkus said the Snowbirds will do “a some of them at a discount rate. “They’re able to do two shows on the couple flybys” around 11 a.m. The last same weekend,” Firkus said. “It’s a win- time they were in Chilliwack also happened to coincide with the last Comox win situation for all parties.” The Discovery Channel crew, excited airshow, so their appearance is not to at the prospects of being able to film be missed. Don’t be late though: while the Snowbirds and other attractions, the air show proper kicks off Sunday helped sort out many of the details for at 1 p.m., the Snowbirds will be at the airport at 11 a.m. as part of having the performthe flight fest’s pre-show. ers come to ChilliFestivities actually start wack, Firkus said. Tried to avoid backed up traffic ACCIDENTS, from page 1 in the left lane when he came upon the backed-up traffic. The motorcyclist tried to brake, but tumbled from the bike. He slid into the right lane of traffic and struck a Ford SUV that was stopped. The man died at the scene. The two occupants of the SUV were uninjured. Mounties say that while road conditions do not appear to have been a contributing factor in the crash, “traffic conditions, speed, mechanical defects on the motorcycle and driver inattention have not been ruled out.” The accident remains under investigation. After being closed for several hours, Highway 1 was opened in the mid-afternoon. Meanwhile, Mounties continued to search for the occupants of the car that rolled over. “We have a fairly good idea of who they are,” RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Peter Thiessen told the Times. “We’re confident that we’ll find them.” Thiessen said he did not know whether the car was stolen.

he Harrison Hot Springs forest fire near the lake Monday has been completely snuffed out. The fire sprang up near a marina and homes on the east side of Harrison Lake around 4:30 p.m., with thick smoke that could be seen billowing from the woods Firefighters from local departments were assisted by three B.C. Forestry Service helicopters and one retardant-dropping air tanker. That helped quell the blaze and prevent the fire from moving up the hill, according to

fire information officer Donna MacPherson. At its largest, the fire was only 0.3 hectares in size. But MacPherson said the terrain contributed to the quick spread of the fire. “That area is technically in moderate [fire risk], but it’s a good example of how the slope or the aspect of the land changes things,” she said. “That was a west facing slope so the sun was beating down on it and it was pretty dry.” The fire is believed to be human-caused.

Tzeachten First Nation chief Glenda Campbell said a new property transfer tax will help pay for upgrades to sidewalks and infrastructure. said. “I’m looking forward to it, and being the first First Nation that has put this through is kind of exciting.” Because purchasers pay the tax, nobody currently living on the reserve will be directly affected. And buyers are so familiar with the tax being levied by the province, it’s unlikely to spark much backlash. The tax will remove a modest incentive to buy land on the reserve. Just last weekend, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for Englewood Courtyard, a five-storey 150-unit apartment building on Tzeachten land aimed at retir-
ing baby boomers. But the developer behind Englewood isn’t worried the tax will affect his ability to sell units. “I see where they’re coming from with that; I think it’s justified,” developer Mark Perry told the Times. “The tax will be assimilated into the market price of each unit. “I won’t be able to market it that there is no transfer tax, but to a certain extent, I never really ever marketed that there was no transfer tax. People bought in my developments because of the location and the quality of the homes.”

uying property on the Tzeachten First Nation reserve just became a little more expensive—but that’s just a sign of progress, according to Chief Glenda Campbell. The Tzeachten have become the first First Nation in Canada to be able to levy property transfer taxes on the purchase of houses and long-term leases. Such taxes have traditionally been applicable everywhere in Canada except on reserves. “It will be money that will be set aside for new infrastructure and sidewalks. We want to get sidewalks on Chilliwack River and Promontory [roads],” Campbell said. “It will help us with revenue coming in. We can do a lot of the infrastructure [improvements] we’ve been planning on doing.” After a six-month transition period during which the maximum levy will be $2,000, the Tzeachten rate will mirror the provincial transfer tax. As a condition for being able to levy the tax, the Tzeachten set up a separate account; the money is intended to be used solely for infrastructure. Campbell said the band also wants to improve lighting along Bailey Road, and Tzeachten general manager James Atebe said the money could also go to recreational facilities and other amenities in the future. “I think it’s going to benefit the ones who are living here now but it will also benefit future generations,” Campbell

An unwelcome phone call T
his isn’t what I was intending to write about. I was planning to write about something pithy and wryly amusing—something to make you laugh (if you’ve a mind to) and something to make you think (if you’ve a mind at all). It was going to be something that would make some people nod in agreement, make some people furrow their brows in disagreement—and probably make some people shake their heads slowly and wonder what the heck it was that I was writing about this time. But moments before I sat down to write my pithy, wry, thoughtful column, I got a phone call. It was one of those calls that you never want to get, even if, somewhere in the nether crannies of the back reaches of your mind, you’ve been kind of expecting it for a while . . . but just never wanted to admit it. I have been very lucky in life. I have received very few such calls. I have five brothers and a sister, most of them older than I am (and I have to admit I am no spring chicken anymore), and we all got the call today about Dad, just as we all did 27 years ago about Mom. For an immediate family of nine, you’ve got to admit that’s a pretty good record. Now, I know there are some folks out there, maybe a lot of them, who couldn’t have cared less about getting a call like this about their father—or their mother. Not every child loves his or her parents, and
BOB GROENEVELD
Be Our Guest often with good reason. But neither Mom nor Dad ever gave any of us reason to feel that way. Mom was in her 60s when she left. Dad would have celebrated his 99th birthday this September. Until a few weeks ago, he was very healthy (for 98, at least). He was able to walk around—without assistance, thank you very much (I suspect that using a walker would have been an admission that he was getting old—and while he knew he could no longer sprint from house to barn, and hadn’t mowed the fields or run the baler for more than a year, he was NOT old). He’d had a few very small strokes over the past year or so, but his mind was agile, if not always clear since he entered hospital a month or so ago with a serious infection. Truth is, while his mind was still able to handle practically anything, that body of his had begun to desert him, a little bit at a time, over the past few years. I’m not sure how I feel right at this moment. I guess that’s normal. The whole
experience needs to sink in and resolve itself. Like I said, I have been lucky in that I haven’t had a lot of practice dealing with feelings like these. Some special moments keep taking over my consciousness. Interestingly, the ones that keep coming back most clearly are things he said and did that relate to life and death, like the time he suddenly pulled over the car just before the Somass River Bridge early one morning. He told me to walk the sidewalk toward the middle of the bridge. He would cross the bridge and meet me halfway, and when we got “there” I should follow his lead. I didn’t get it. But he always noticed things, and I hadn’t yet seen what he had. We saved a life that day—or at least Dad did. Even when I finally noticed the woman, it still didn’t register that she was outside the railing, and so cold in the morning mist that, even if she’d changed her mind, she wouldn’t have been able to hang on much longer. The past couple of days he was playing chess . . . with friends he’d lost long ago. I guess those friends had come to get him, and today, he was ready to go. I had my Dad much longer than most people get to have theirs. Still not long enough. ◗ Bob Groeneveld is editor of the LangleyAdvance.
rying to determine why cellphone plans are more expensive in some countries than in others is taxing. We know that Canadians pay among the highest rates in the developed world for cell coverage. We pay more than the Americans, more than most Europeans, more than just about everybody. Now the established cell giants, including Rogers and Telus, are arguing against allowing U.S. giant Verizon into the Canadian market—at least without changing a few rules first, they say. Just to level the playing field. It’s often claimed that one of the reasons cell service costs more here than other places is that Canada is a big, big, country, and it costs a lot to set up all those towers for a relatively small population base. Well, then, you’d expect cell coverage would be pretty expensive in Australia, too, right? Or New Zealand, a small but mountainous land? Nope, it’s cheaper in both. Cheaper in Iceland, too, a country with a population less than that of Surrey. Meanwhile Japan, a densely populated country with a much larger population, is one of the few countries where cell service is more expensive. In fact, according to e-commerce law expert Michael Geist, Canadian cell firms take a bigger chunk of profit from us than firms in almost every country. There are scores of charges and fees that cell users here pay that are reduced or don’t exist in other countries. While cell costs are coming down, at least in some areas, we have not yet seen the dramatic drops to even us up with our neighbours in the club of rich nations. We’re in no way saying that Verizon will sweep in to the Canadian market and bring lower prices. They’re in it for profit too, after all. What we’re saying is that it is in the best interests of all big companies to make as much money as possible. So take their pleas with a sizeable grain of salt.

LPNs added for more support Editor: LPNABC Response re: The Strain of Relying on Others (part one Aug. 6) and Keeping up with demand (part two Aug. 8) of a series on clients using Chilliwack Home Support. The Licensed Practical Nurses Association of BC (LPNABC) would like to support the role of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in Home Support as LPN supervisors. This role has been successfully implemented to support better services for clients who require care in their homes. The comment in part two “Keeping up with demand,” states the client’s care had changed a few years ago when RN supervisors were “replaced” by cheaper labour (LPNs). This is incorrect. The RN supervisors remain and the LPN supervisor was “added” to help support the growing home support system and to enhance the needs of the clients. The addition of LPN supervisors was the solution for being able to “physically” visit the homes and review the delivery of care by the home Community Health Workers (CHW’s), therefore ensuring the best possible health outcomes. The addition of LPNs was a positive solution to both the need for careful monitoring in the home as well as to the health budget concerns associated with a rapid increase in demand for services in the area. The LPN supervisor is an important addition to the system to help support the CHW’s in their services being provided to clients. To further clarify, the RN supervisor or Team Leader is still responsible for the annual client’s assessments and if changes to the care delivery are required it is done in consultation with the RN/LPN and CHWs to
ensure the best health outcomes. In both articles the need for continuity of care and consistency of services is clear. LPNABC supports the LPN as an integral part of the Home Support team, not just a budgetary solution, but as a key contributor to ensuring the best possible care is given to clients in their homes. Michelle Devia, LPN President Licensed Practical Nurses Association of BC
A dangerous prank to play Editor: On Aug. 13, a segment on the TV news profiled a cyclist on Vancouver Island who was seriously injured after some idiot(s) strung electric wire across a well-used road. The unsuspecting cyclist was thrown from his bike resulting in injuries which left him hospitalized. A few days ago my and husband and I were returning home, when, too late to stop, we ran into a cord tied from one tree to another across the bend on Hillcrest situated on Little Mountain. Luckily we just had a scare but are very concerned about other residents and visitors to our normally quiet streets. There is a senior citizen who regularly cycles up and down our mountain and I shudder to think what damage would occur to this active person. We have skateboarders who have fun riding their boards in this area and I am convinced these youths are not the culprits. These particular youths are polite and considerate to residents. Whoever these idiots are, I should ask that they reconsider their asinine actions before a serious accident takes place. Michael and SylviaWhite Chilliwack

it down and read the short gospel book of Mark—it is an action book that is full of Jesus doing some amazing things. What is even more challenging in the book is that at some point Jesus turns to his followers and says, “Okay, it’s your turn. You do these same things—go for it!” For example, one of the things that any novice follower of Jesus was empowered to do was to bring God’s healing touch to people’s lives in the name and authority of Jesus. I always found that a bit intimidating. I look at these pudgy hands of mine and know that they don’t even properly play a guitar let alone heal anybody or anything. Yet, I can’t shake that feeling that
Does God heal today?
Jesus expects me to be like one of his early followers. I guess this raises the obvious opening question: Does God still heal today? Let me tell you a story about my friend Elaine. Elaine had been injured in a car accident where her spinal cord had been badly stretched. The result was a life of constant pain, severe headaches, and uncontrollable spasms. She lived for 18 years spending thousands of dollars on medical bills and relying on morphine and a suitcase of other pharmaceuticals and natural remedies to get through the day. In the middle of this, God began
to take her on a journey where she began to pray for others on a regular basis and also asked for small ways to show kindness to others despite her situation. One day as she was praying, light hit her body like a welder’s torch and she literally felt her spinal cord heal and the toxins gather up and leave her body. When her husband came home she ran out to him as he got out of the car, flew into his arms and told him that God had healed her—that was four years ago! Stories like this raise my sense of expectancy that God is still breaking into our world today. They
make me want to see more of that. Some stories are not nearly as dramatic. Last week, we prayed for someone who had pain in his right knee. This week he told me the pain wasn’t there anymore. Some people have said to me, “What if people aren’t healed? Isn’t it cruel to raise people’s expectations?” I can’t demand healing or guarantee it. Some people we have prayed for have not experienced the healing we hope for. Yet the God I read about always has a bias towards love. I can pray out of this bias that God loves to give good gifts to his children and believe it’s

more likely than not that he wants to do that with the person in front of me. The real test: is does the person receiving prayer experience the love and compassion of God no matter what happens? If that is the case it is bound to be a good thing—and a God thing. So the next time you have someone tell you about a physical need, ask if you can pray for healing for them and then do it right there. You’ll blow them away. If you do have a physical need and you don’t know anybody bold enough to do that then send me an email, we would love to come and pray with expectation for you that God will come and bring healing to your life.

Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future.

Results from Chilli Bowl Bantam Giants edge out tough North Delta squad
The Chilliwack Bantam Giants claimed a hardfought 16-7 victory over the North Delta Longhorns last weekend during the fifth annual Chilli Bowl at Townsend Park. The game started off as a defensive battle, with the Giants holding the Longhorns in their own end for most of the first half and the Longhorns allowing only a single off a punt by Gabe Olivares in the first quarter. The Giants opened up the score with a 50-yard touchdown run by Karn Doel to put the Giants up 7-0. The Giants defence was led by defensive MVP Chris Derksen, and a linebacker core led by Marius Anghel, Cam Lampart and AJ Sagrott. The Giants sealed their Chilli Bowl victory in the fourth quarter with a 35yard touchdown run by Mitchell Bryne. “The effort put out by these young men was exceptional and I couldn’t be happier with the level of play in their first game together,”

Head Coach Mike Derksen said. The Bantam squad continues its exhibition season this weekend at the Golden Helmet Tournament in Langley.
A convert was all that separated a win from a loss
In the atom division, the Blue Giants took first place, beating the Red Giants by just a convert. The Blues, who went 3-1 in the tournament, got by touchdowns from quarterback Travis Richley, and running back DJ Stephens, while full back Aiden Saunders and running back Theo Smith helped keep drives alive all day. On the other side of the ball, linebacker Jace Nessel,
and cornerback Aiden Parks had game-saving tackles, shutting down their opponents. Defensive end Travis Richley also had a fumble recovery that he ran back 60 yards for a touchdown. “The team really came together today, and they all had each others’ backs. It’s exciting for the coaches and parents to see the kids have so much fun,” said head coach Ian Parks.
Atom Red Giants owned tourney’s best defence
The Chilliwack Atom Red Giants also put up an impressive second-place finish on Sunday in the Chilli Bowl, thanks in large part to the tournament’s best defence. The Reds, led by Mateo Tuioti, allowed only 13 points against during the tournament. The offence wasn’t too shabby either, putting 25 points on the board, and registering more than 100 yards passing, with Nick Beck and Joshua Caverley leading the way.

good week for theValley Huskers got even better Tuesday with news that their season opening loss to the Okanagan Sun has turned into a win after it was revealed the Sun had used an ineligible player. The Huskers lost 65-10 to the Sun in their British Columbia Football Conference season opener in Kelowna on July 27. But on Tuesday—more than two weeks after that game—the BCFC announced an investigation had revealed that Sun defensive back Curtis Kelly was not eligible to play in the game. The BCFC subsequently decided to overturn the game’s decision and award a 1-0 victory to the Huskers. With Valley having tied, and then beaten the Kamloops Broncos in the previous two weeks, the Huskers’ record now sits at 2-0-1. The decision also vaults Valley into second place in the league and means the Huskers are, technically, riding a four-game undefeated streak. At least for now.
Gary Nylander/THE DAILY COURIER
Okanagan Sun running back Dillon Fortune carries the ball in for a touchdown as Chilliwack Huskers linebacker Josh Giroux looks on. The Sun won the game handily, but the league has since ruled they must forfeit the game because they used an ineligible player. BCFC president Gord Johnson told the Times the Sun has signalled that they wish to appeal the decision. Johnson said a member of a five-person BCFC committee will be selected to look at the case and decide whether the league has erred in changing the result of the game. According to the BCFC, Kelly played for the Hamilton Hurricanes of the Ontario Football Conference in 2012. Kelly requested to be released from the Hurricanes, but the team declined to do so. Kelly was thus still the property of
the Hurricanes, and other Canadian Junior Football League teams are banned from recruiting, registering and dressing players whose rights are held by other clubs. The league cited a rule that states: “Should the player be ruled ineligible due to a major breech of eligibility rules (overage, suspension, unregistered and/or other similar situation) the offending team shall be subject to a fine not to exceed $3,000 and forfeit game/s in which the ineligible player is on their roster.”
LEGACY
Johnson told theTimes that the situation was unique and that the league is looking at ways to avoid such problems in the future. He said an online registration and database for players across the country would be one such solution. While he wasn’t certain of the chain of events that led to the discovery that the Sun had played with an ineligible player, Johnson said it may have been a Hurricanes coach who watched the game online who tipped the league off.

Mussell ties for top saddle bronc title
C
hilliwack saddle bronc rider extraordinaire Kaila Mussell put together a pair of good rides to tie for top spot at last weekend’s BCRA rodeo at the Chilliwack Fair. Mussell tied Kamloops’s Cole Scott with a score of 72 on her best ride for a split of the first- and second-place money. Quesnel’s Steve Hohmann finished in second, and Mussell and Scott were again inseparable as their second
rides tied the pair for fourth place. Chilliwack’s Landon Blackstock also had a good rodeo, finishing seventh in the team roping competition alongside Courtney teammate Pat Cullen. The pair roped their calf in just eight seconds. The team of Aaron Palmer of Knutsford and Mark Pozzobon of Savona finished first with a time of 6.8 seconds. And in the ladies barrel racing event, Chilliwack’s Shadra Davis
National brought home by vaulters
the tie-down roping, while Troy Gerard of Savona won the junior breakaway event. Savona’s Elly Farmer won the pee wee barrel racing competition, with a time of 19.118 seconds, while Taylor Cherry of Quesnel won in the jr. division. The junior steer riding crown went to Blaine Manuel of 150 Mile House. Katrina Knicki of Williams Lake won the breakaway roping competition.

ore than 300 local men, women and children lined up at the Harrison Hot Springs Resort Saturday for a chance to appear as extras in a new TV series being shot in Agassiz. Dubbed Wayward Pines, the 10-episode mystery drama tells the tale of Secret Service agent Ethan Burke, who arrives in the idyllic town of Wayward Pines, Idaho, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Burke’s investigation only turns up more questions, and each step closer to the truth takes Burke further from the life he knew until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive. Agassiz’s Pioneer Avenue, whose north side is currently being fitted up with a row of facades, will star as downtown Wayward Pines. She has valley’s best voice
Q: Is there anything I can do to treat the fine lines under my eyes?
Thirteen-year-old singing sensation takes top prize at Valley Voices Vocal Competition BY CHRISTINA TOTH CToth@abbotsfordtimes.com
A
whole new world may be opening up for Valley Voices Vocal Competition winner Kianna Nicholson. The 13-year-old Chilliwack native wowed judges and an appreciative audience with her pipes and her presence on the Agrifair stage Aug. 2 to take the overall prize in the fifth annual singing competition. She earned an amazing artist development package from Darcy D Music Group of Abbotsford, plus consultations with SEE VIDEO WITH layar internationally reknown voice coaches Dave Stroud and RAab Stevenson, and lots of other support to launch a music career. “We’re going to brand her, build her social presence, develop some songs for her and get her performing live. Then she can decide if she wants to continue,” said Darcy Deutsch, a former lead singer with Vancouver band Prism, and the principal at the Darcy D Music Group, which focuses on artist development. Runners up were Matthew van Vooght (13 to 18 years), and Aza Deschamps (7 to 12 years).
You have it in you!

Chilliwack’s Kianna Nicholson took top spot at the Valley Voices Vocal Competition held at the Abbotsford Agrifair earlier this month.
A: Yes! We are very excited to offer a new procedure called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). PRP works by concentrating platelets and fibrin from your own blood and reinjecting it at a particular site to correct a targeted skin imperfection, such as fine lines and wrinkles. The skin looks rejuvenated and skin tone and texture is improved! The procedure takes 45 minutes and is completed in 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. It is effective for treating dark circles & fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes; chest and cleavage wrinkles & neck lines to name a few.
A special nod went to young competitor Catryna Akins, who collected the most likes on the VVVC Facebook site. Other finalists were Jonah Weiner, Alyssa Lynch and Madison Bell. More than 200 B.C. youngsters auditioned for the contest, said Deutsch. Deutsch said the young singers seem more polished with every new contest. “They never cease to amaze me. They get younger and better,” he said. “Is it access to the Internet, I don’t know. They seem to work really hard and have the right tools at their fingertips.”
