hilliwack sweltered in recordbreaking, early-May temperatures this weekend and the hot weather is expected to last until Saturday. Sunday’s high temperature of 31.5 C was a record for May 5, breaking the 29.4 C set in 1953, according to Roger Pannett, Chilliwack’s volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada. That high was 14 C above normal. The minimum temperature of 12.8 C on Sunday tied the record low first recorded in 1966 and the high mean temperature of 22.15 C (10.42 C above normal) broke the 1966 record of 21.1 C. Data were unavailable before going to press, but records were expected to be broken again Monday with temperatures in the high 20s predicted until Saturday. A number of local residents in Sardis and Chilliwack visited the local spray parks on the weekend only to find them dry. The water at both the Landing Leisure Centre and the Cheam Leisure Centre is not usually turned on until the May long weekend, but the City of Chilliwack tweeted Monday that both will likely be turned on earlier. No date was specified. The hot early May weather comes after a particularly wet April that saw 185.2 millimetres (mm) of rain, up nearly 50 per cent over the 30-year average of 125.3 mm. It was the wettest April since 1996, according to Pannett. Incidentally, after 25 years of recording weather for Environment Canada in his James Street back yard, Pannett and his family have moved to Garrison Crossing. He will continue to record weather data at that new location, which he says has a slightly different micro-climate.

Firefighters doused a small plane after it crashed on Fairfield Island Thursday. Al Sykes was working in his backyard when he heard a “whoosh” and the sound of a barely working engine. “I was just working outside my shop and I heard a whirring noise and I looked up and there he was, flying by the trees,” he said. The engine, he said, “was still turning, but it was just turning.” The plane managed to clear pow-

BCCP Chilliwack-Hope candidate Michael Henshall said they would be happy to lend their personal expertise as negotiators (Eros owns a business consulting firm and Henshall is a realtor) to help resolve the ongoing labour strife between teachers and the provincial government. Martin, however, singled out the B.C. Teachers’ Federation for not being able to reach any kind of lasting agreement with the government. As a UFV instructor and a public sector employee, Martin said he has not lost even one minute of work time to a labour disruption over the last 25 years. “The education constituency can work with government,” he said. “We worked w i t h S o c i a l C re d i t , w e worked with the NDP and we worked with the Liberals and we have not had one single day of interruption. Why is that? Why is it that some public sector unions and some public sector representation are always able to reach agreements?” Throness said the Liberals have been generous to teachers, with a 17 per cent raise and a $3,700 signing bonus for every B.C. teacher in 2006, and that the 10year collective-agreement plan would be a way to create ongoing labour peace. BCTF vice-president Glen Hansman on Twitter, however, called the 10-year plan a sound byte and not a real proposal. He said the deal wasn’t costed in the Liberal platform and that, anyway, no one had talked to the union about it since Valentine’s Day.

Day shrugs off debate challenge

Former federal leader says fear of NDP is valid BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com

S

tockwell Day says he won’t be debating Chilliwack BC Conservative candidate Chad Eros any time soon. Eros has posted a YouTube video in which he challenges the former federal opposition leader to a debate over who is more conservative. But Day, who is campaigning for the BC Liberals, says Eros should concern himself more with his electoral opponents. “If he’s up to the task, get into a debate with these gentlemen,” Day told the Times Friday while by local BC Liberal candidates John Martin and Laurie Throness. “That’s what voters want to see. I don’t know if he’s worried about being compared to two very credible candidates here. Maybe that’s his worry. “I’m just a volunteer,” he said with a smile. “Candidates shouldn’t go around picking on poor volunteers like me.” Of course, Day is no ordinary volunteer.

Cornelia Naylor/TIMES

Flanked by Chilliwack-Hope BC Liberal candidate Laurie Throness (left) and Chilliwack BC Liberal candidate John Martin, former federal opposition leader Stockwell Day speaks at the office of the Chilliwack Times Friday. Christy Clark’s campaign team has enlisted Day, who served in cabinet under Stephen Harper, to show that federal Conservatives should vote BC Liberal provincially. “There is so much confusion in this election regarding the word

‘conservative,’” he said. “I’m proof that you can be a federal Conservative and vote BC Liberal. Day said that if they so desire, social conservatives should try to change the BC Liberals from the inside, rather than turning to another right-wing party.

Open Air Burning Ban

Effective May 1, 2013 to September 30, 2013, all outdoor burning is prohibited within the City of Chilliwack. This ban also applies to the use of all outdoor wood burning appliances. (eg. chimineas, outdoor fireplaces) Burning restrictions do not apply to gas fueled appliances such as BBQs or outdoor heaters. Burning in a prohibited season will result in fines ranging from $250 - $1000. For more information, contact us at 604-792-8713 or visit our website at www.chilliwack.com/fire

“You’re never going to see a party that perfectly embraces everybody’s point of view. So you have to say, where can I be the greatest influence,” he said. “For social conservatives, I’m saying, ‘Don’t shut out the province on economic possibilities and don’t shut yourself

See how much money you could save on annual heating costs with natural gas.1

out.’” Day said he knew Throness from his time as a Conservative social policy researcher and Martin from his criminology work, which Day said helped the federal Conservatives shape policy. Day said he was spending time campaigning in Chilliwack, historically a BC Liberal stronghold, because Throness and Martin’s “respect for voters show they take nothing for granted.” Day said the BC Liberals’ economic policies were responsible for turning around British Columbia’s fortunes in the early 2000’s and said he was worried about what an NDP government would mean for B.C. Day, though, is no stranger to fear-based campaigning. During the 2000 federal election, the federal Liberals aggressively questioned Day’s social conservatism and suggested he had a “hidden agenda” he would enact if he became Prime Minister. The Day-led Canadian Alliance was duly trounced at the polls. Day said campaigning on the danger posed by the provincial NDP is different. “The fear factor is always a factor, but this time it happens to be real and true,” he said. “There is a very clear policy difference. It’s fear based on fact.”

rowing up, I often had difficulty telling when the children’s books I was reading were taking place. It took me a while to realize that I could flip to the back of the title page and find a date—1958, 1964, 1987. For an adult, discerning dates is easier, because you can pick up cues from fashion, pop culture, and background current events in novels. For a kid, a lot of those are either mysterious, or mushed together. But it’s now impossible, even in a novel written for and about 11year-olds, to avoid dating the book. Does the character have an Xbox or a Super Nintendo? Do his parents have flip phones or smartphones? Can he watch YouTube or just visit a BBS? The flip seems to have happened around the mid-1980s, but it’s strange how homogenous household technology was for the previous 30 years. During those decades, almost every middle and working class home in North America had the following: a record player and radio, a TV (maybe black and white), a rotary dial phone, hot and cold running water, indoor flush toilets, a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and maybe a dishwasher. Several generations were born into households with roughly the same level of consumer stuff. Be Our Guest baseline. Then the home computer and communication revolution hit, starting in the late 1970s and early ’80s. Instead of having home technology that was stable, we got devices that were distinctly unstable, constantly changing. From the VCRs of the 1970s we have cashed through to DVD players, Bluerays, PVRs and streaming video. Phones have changed even more thoroughly. Three decades ago, the phrase “I’ll take a picture of that with my phone” would have made as much sense as “I’ll wash the dishes with my socket wrench.” So why did things change slowly for 30 years, then rapidly for 30 years? Best guess? Technology changes swing back and forth between big and small. Let’s go way back to the early 1800s. The big technologies—and they are big—are steam engines, factories, canals. Railways come into play, as do steamships. These big technologies change the lives of average people—cloth and kitchenware are cheaper and mass produced. But frankly, people still urinate in pots or in sheds covering holes

in the ground. Water is heated over burning coal or wood. You walk, or you ride a horse. Between the 1880s and the 1950s, the big tech of industrial manufacturing finally swept through the average home. Every kitchen appliance, including the mircowave oven, dates from around this era. It’s possible to invent a flush toilet much earlier, but it’s not possible to mass produce them cheaply enough, along with the thousands of miles of sewer and water pipe needed, if you don’t have that industrial capacity from foundries and factories and railways. Then little technologies plateaued. We went back to big tech—nuclear power, rocketry, artificial satellites, computers that filled rooms, robots in big factories. The next swing of the pendulum saw big tech go small. Computers don’t fill rooms, they sit in your pocket; satellites and servers mean cheap GPS and nigh unlimited communication bandwidth and storage, robots are for vacuuming the floor and, soon, steering your car. So, are we going to hit stability and slow change for small tech, for our phones and gadgets? Is the pendulum still swinging, or is it played out? Will we go back to big tech, and if so, what kind of changes will it bring? ◗ Matthew Claxton is a reporter with the Langley Advance.

f you’re considering voting, but you don’t know if you’re registered, fear not. Are you 18 years old or older, and do you possess Canadian citizenship? Then this shouldn’t be too difficult. You can mark a ballot in the upcoming British Columbia provincial election, if you follow a few simple procedures. First, you should know that there was a simple online method to sign up as a voter. It’s now closed, but this still leaves a number of ways to get yourself registered. First, you need to know where you live. Second, you need to have some kind of ID. Option one, according to Elections BC, is to have a piece of government issued ID with your name, photo, and residential address. Your driver’s licence is ideal, or a B.C. Identification Card or B.C. Services Card for those who don’t drive. A Certificate of Indian Status from the feds will also work. Don’t have any of those? If your wallet was just stolen, you will need two documents that show your name, and at least one of them must also contain your home address. Bills are the best bets here —your cable bill will finally be good for something other than providing episodes of Duck Dynasty. However, according to Elections BC, a wide range of items, including hospital bracelets, bank statements, and membership cards will suffice. What is not acceptable? Nothing handwritten. You cannot scrawl “John Smith livez here” on a table napkin and vote anywhere you want. Most voters will be getting a card in the mail telling them where to vote, if they’re already registered. However, if you are uncertain and didn’t get a card, you can vote at any polling place in the province on voting day. That includes polling places in other ridings. It may take a little bit longer to get through the paperwork but it’s still easier than figuring out the instructions for your new PVR. In other words, if you want to vote, you don’t have an excuse not to.

Respect and pride, not self entitlement

Editor: This is an open letter for all members of our great community in Chilliwack. We owe a lot to various groups, people and individuals for the many wonderful and exciting things to do in this city of ours. None moreso than Island 22. This gorgeous wild area meandering along the banks of the Fraser River gives us a stunning opportunity to enjoy the best that nature has to offer—for everyone. It’s with great pride that the members of the Fraser Valley Regional District and the members of the City of Chilliwack, have allowed us this opportunity to interact so intimately with nature in its many recreational offerings. Such as the equestrian area, the boat launch and the magnificent dike that people can stroll or bike alongside the river throughout the year. The regional district has even gone so far as to create a separated area for people with dogs, allowing them to roam as freely as we do, off leash. And this brings me to my frustration. The regional parks commission has created a fencedoff area for people with dogs to run free off-leash. However, there are clearly marked signs posted all throughout the area, that dogs are to remain leashed up, when not accessing the off-leash area. There are also many signs posted around that state dog owners must clean up after their dogs when “nature calls,” so that other people who use the park aren’t accosted by free roaming dogs and side-stepping steaming piles of feces. There are far too many people with dogs that take this for granted, and extort their self-entitlement to this area outside the off-leash park; allowing their dogs to race ahead of them and piling leftovers all around the trail. This is absolutely disrespectful to other users of the park, the regional and municipal members who have provided this area for everyone’s enjoyment, not to mention, nature herself. On my regular hour-long walks along the trail, I come across a respectful few who actually do leash their animals in the park. And for that, to them, I am thankful. However, it’s the rest who feel that society should kowtow to them because they are who

they are and they are allowed to let their dogs do what they want. Please understand, I myself, am a dog lover. Over the years I have come to appreciate the companionship of my fellow canines in life. Having said that, I also respected my fellow human companions by keeping my dogs close to me and under my guidance when in public. Going further, dogs that are allowed to run through the park off-leash, are in actuality, doing damage to the environment. As I have witnessed many times in just the last week, dogs will race to the shoreline, jump down to the rivers edge to drink the cool waters. As they race back to the path to meet their owners, they have to claw their way up the five-foot embankment, causing copious amounts of material to fall into the river. There is a bright red sign and three bright orange cones that state “Failing Bank.” I’m sure the safety committee who erected the sign did so not because they had some left over material and nothing better to do with their time, rather there is an inherent danger in the degradation of the dike. As this is a wild habitat, there are many animals that call this their home. To let your dogs roam freely on their own, is to put nature and its animals in undue and unnecessary harm. Birds (oftentimes the great eagles) forage this area for their survival. Dogs running around causes the prey for these birds to seek cover and shelter. Imagine your food ducking for cover because of a dog; how would you feel? I believe in this time, day and age, we must show more compassion and respect to each other, rather than exercising our self-delusional sense of entitlement. Please, respect yourselves, and oth-

ers, and keep your dogs on a leash, and clean up after them. The consequences are that the regional district may restrict or even revoke our privileges to this area. In the least, the governments may decide, if we cannot police ourselves, than they must do it for us. If that’s the case, I am more than willing to volunteer for this position. Getting an early re-election start Editor: Should a convicted cop shooter be allowed entry to Canada? Wow! What can possibly be the motive for the need for Mark Strahl to spend taxpayer money to send a pamphlet to everyone in his constituency? Of course, it’s simply a way of starting early to campaign for re-election on the public dime. It’s ridiculous enough to be sent this minor piece of information from Parliament’s question period, however, he doesn’t even say why the NDP believes this man to be acceptable for immigration. Mr. Strahl doesn’t feel the need to address an important issue like the missing $3 billion dollars that was earmarked for anti-terrorism —and that his party leader cannot explain. Nor does he address, or ask for, a way to address a way of collecting billions of tax dollars owing the government from offshore havens. Or even ask for ideas on how to improve our immigration process. Surely, to expect anyone to fall for this type of obvious electoral sham is indeed

insulting . . . or should be viewed as such. Jack Stewart Chilliwack

Bursary dinner great success Editor: The Senior’s Bursary Dinner was held at the Chilliwack senior secondary on May 1 to a sold-out crowd of 200. Our committee wish to thank teaching chef Terry McDougall, chef Sharon Touchet, Judith Booker, Christine Cutajar, their coworkers and the culinary arts students for the delicious dinner they prepared and served. Proceeds are allocated to bursaries. A note of interest that 1982 was the first banquet and 2013 is our 32nd year. These banquets are held twice a year on the first Wednesday of May and December. All banquets have been served in the present school. The December banquet will be held in the new school, which is nearing completion. Thelma S. on behalf of the Banquet Committee

Separating myth from fact Editor: After reading the Faith Today sermon of May 2, I was very troubled by the tone of authority Pastor Vandop uses when referring to Jesus Christ. The pastor’s wording throughout the sermon implies that it is a known fact that Jesus Christ was a real person and His words were recorded by someone with firsthand knowledge. The church has been trying for at least a thousand years to prove this is true and it still hasn’t happened. Until the world accepts the fact that the Jesus Christ story is a myth, along with most other stories in the Bible, we will never get beyond this crazy grip religion seems to hold over most of our population. I personally find it very annoying when authority figures speak as though they have private knowledge of Christ’s existence and yet scientists and historians can find no evidence of it. hilliwack secondary’s senior girls soccer team clinched top spot in Fraser Valley East Friday, beating Surrey’s Clayton Heights 2-0 in the last game of the regular season. Both local triple-A squads finished the season undefeated, but Sardis managed only a scoreless draw against Clayton Heights Wednesday and ended the season two points behind their cross-town rivals. The Storm and the Falcons had battled for supremacy in the zone all season and their only encounter ended in a 2-2 tie.

Chilliwack, seeded third in the Fraser Valley Championship tournament, now takes on 14th seed North Surrey at Townsend Park Tuesday (May 7) at 3:30 p.m. A win would put them in a match against either Terry Fox or Enver Creek Thursday. Sardis, seeded fifth, takes on 12th seed South Delta Tuesday at Sardis at 3 p.m. A win for the Falcons would put them up against either Elgin Park or Centennial Thursday. ◗ For more info and results, visit www. fraservalleysoccer.webs.com.

Walk with your Doc event gets us moving

BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com

A

bout 30 local doctors will lace up for a walk with their patients at Townsend and Watson Glen parks Wednesday in a bid to promote good health. Dubbed Walk with your Doc, the outing is part of an annual, week-long province-wide initiative sponsored by the BC Medical

Free pedometer for those joining doctors May 10 Association to celebrate the World Health Organization’s Move for Health Day on May 10. Locally, the two walks are sponsored by the Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation and the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice. “It demonstrates a connection

with their patients around healthy activity,” division executive director Ken Becotte said about why doctors have gotten involved. “Walking for most people is something that they can do. It’s a good thing, and it looks like the weather is going to be fantastic.” Though there has been at least

one walk in Chilliwack before, Becotte said his organization is working to raise the event’s profile this year. Refreshments will be provided as well as a free pedometer for counting steps. The walk, open to all ages and abilities, will take off at noon.

Your Guide to Great Shops & Services Business of the Week

Local doctors should be more than up to the task, according to Becotte. He said most of the ones he works with are good role models when it comes to healthy exercise, with many active in running, cycling and hiking. “It’s a hectic schedule but they do find time,” Becotte said. ◗ For more information, visit www. bcma.org.

News FUGITIVE, from page 1 new acquaintance punched his name into Google and came across Chilliwack Times articles about his conviction and subsequent disappearance. The warrant issued last October for his arrest extended only to Alberta.

Arrested while loitering at McDonald’s He has since been extradited back to Chilliwack, where a bail hearing was scheduled for Monday. Crown counsel Paul Blessin told the Times he would oppose Colman’s release.

But by last Monday, a Canada-wide warrant had been implemented. That same day, after he had spent several nights hanging around a McDonald’s, Colman was arrested for loitering.

he would continue his ways until caught. He and current CMA treasurer Joseph Smith said Colman targeted individuals as well as organizations. “He could turn around and sell an igloo to an Eskimo, he’s so smooth,” Smith said. “He’s a very good storyteller.”

ount Slesse middle school was closed late Monday morning after fire broke out in a science prep room. Fire crews quickly snuffed out the fire, which caused only minimal fire damage to the room, which functions as a storage closet. But the fire did cause smoke to enter Mount Slesse’s air handling unit, and that led officials to cancel classes and end the school WEB FIRST day earlier, First reported on according chilliwacktimes.com to School District 33 superintendent Evelyn Novak. Students were gathered in the school’s gymnasium and were to be sent home after contact was made with their parents, Novak said. She said maintenance crews would spend the afternoon venting the school. “We hope that classes will be resuming tomorrow as per usual,” she said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to assistant fire chief Jeff Ullyot.

Fuel was leaking PLANE, from page 1 “I’ve seen a vehicle get hit and it was the same kind of noise,” Sykes said. After becoming entangled in a barbed wire fence, the plane came to rest pointing in a southerly direction. Sykes and other residents who saw the crash rushed to the scene of the accident and began assisting the two occupants of the plane. Fuel was later found to be leaking from the plane.
