Chilliwack teacher has been charged with possession of child pornography, the Times has learned. John Patrick Davy, 43, of Chilliwack had his first court appearance Tuesday where he faced one count of possession of child pornography. Because of a court-imposed publication ban on the proceedings, few details can be reported, but RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen confirmed that Davy is a teacher. And School District 33 superintendent Evelyn Novak also confirmed that Davy is a teacher in the district. But Novak would not say whether or not Davy had been suspended or faces any other action. “I can’t comment on that because it’s a personnel matter,” she told theTimes. Mounties said no local youth are affected by the material in question. “Our first and foremost responsibility in an investigation of this nature is the safety and security of our community’s youth,” said vanNieuwenhuizen. “Our investigation to date has found that no local youth’s safety has been compromised.” Davy’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 16.

Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven founder Ena Vermerris is thankful for the trust people have placed in her vision.
A trusted Safe Haven
Tenth anniversary celebration held this weekend BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
Y
ou can measure the success of Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven’s first 10 years by the increasing number of cats the shelter cares for, the growth of its physical footprint, or the long hours logged by its dedicated volunteers. But a better gauge might be the length of the silence when founder Ena Vermerris is asked about being trusted with the donations that have allowed the haven to thrive over a decade. “To me that’s the sacred thing,” she said, before choking up with emotion. Several seconds passed before the energetic Vermerris continued. “Maybe it’s because I’ve worked in the community for so many years and they know me… I think they look at what we have here, and they see what we’ve done the past 10 years and that generates trust.” In 2003, Vermerris—who had just retired after a long career as a nurse—
VISIT URL WITH layar bought a Chilliwack Central Road property to develop a sanctuary for cats without a home. Ten years later, 170 cats live at the facility. That number is constantly rising, in part because of Vermerris’s strict no-kill policy, and the haven’s promise to take care of the cats of seniors who die or move into a no-pets-allowed facility. Vermerris says running the facility has been “incredibly fulfilling,” if a little tiring. The last decade, she says, has been “very busy, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.” As she walks through the home, Vermerris pauses in front of a caged room. Inside, a small cat sits on the floor, while, atop a carpeted stand, a tiny grey kitten sleeps, curled up into a ball. The older cat had recently been dropped off at the haven soon after giving birth. (The cat’s former owner said homes had already been found for the kittens.) The kitten, meanwhile, had been turned over after supposedly being found living in a barn. At the Safe Haven, the motherless kitten was introduced to

the kittenless mother. Today, they share a room and the kitten suckles the milk of her adopted mother. Vermerris says the Safe Haven has allowed her to put her old nursing skills to use post-retirement. But she’s also had to learn a new bag of tricks in order to run a business-like non-profit organization with budgets, large numbers of volunteers, and facilities to oversee. “I was just a nurse taking care of people, now I find myself running a business,” she said. But while the haven and its cat population has grown, Vermerris shows no intention of slowing down. “It’s never too many,” she said. “I love them all.” The Safe Haven outgrew the confines of its single-family ranch house long ago. Dozens of cats roam the house and sleep pretty much everywhere. Outside, two shed structures house more cats in individual shelters. Vermerris hopes to convert another structure into another cat shelter. ◗ This Saturday, the Safe Haven—at 49843 Chilliwack Central Rd.—will celebrate its anniversary with a barnyard sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and an open house beginning at 11 a.m. For more information, call 604-794-7233 or email info@thesafehaven.ca.

n t h e F r a s e r Va l l e y Regional District’s (FVRD) fight against Metro Vancouver’s proposed garbage incinerator, directors have taken a new approach. Metro director Malcolm Brodie and manager of solid waste Paul Henderson were at the “heated” FVRD board meeting Tuesday night to talk about proposed“flow control” regulations, which would prevent waste generated in Metro from leaving the region. FVRD directors, including Chilliwack mayor and board chair Sharon Gaetz, say the policy is really designed to keep garbage in region to “feed the beast” in the form of an incinerator. Gaetz and the FVRD board are also warning Metro residents that not only does flow control mean an increase in tipping fees but if an incinerator is built, the folks in Vancouver would be eating food grown in the Fraser Valley that is subject to more contamination. “We know that what comes out of the smokestack is polluting and is going to come down and land in the food you are about to eat,” Gaetz told theTimes. And with tipping fees in Metro forecast to rise from $107 a tonne to $151 in four years, Vancouver residents will pay more. The FVRD has been highly critical of Metro’s plans and the lack of consultation along the way. Brodie and Henderson were in Chilliwack to talk about flow control Tuesday and refused to talk about the incineration issue, according to Gaetz. “They were very prickly,” Gaetz said of Brodie’s response to hard questions about the incinerator.

‘Grandstanding’ slows, but fails to stop, budget BY CORNELIA NAYLOR cnaylor@chilliwacktimes.com
T
he Chilliwack school board passed its $123 million 2013-14 operating budget Tuesday, but not before a little acrimonious spat over special education funding. Before the second reading of the budget bylaw (which requires three readings) trustee Heather Maahs introduced two amendments related to special education funding. One called for further discussion and the other moved to have $98,000 earmarked for an early intervention co-ordinator spent on training for resource teachers and learning assistance teachers instead. She said the $5,000 budgeted for such training was not enough and that “boots on the ground services for children” were more important than adding another position at the board office. She also raised concerns that Early Success programs at Watson and Little Mountain elementary schools had been cut to make room for the new administrative position. Superintendent Evelyn Novak contradicted that claim, however, explaining the teaching time for the axed programs was still in place and will be spread out next year over five schools with 0.4 of a full time equivalent (FTE). Trustee Doug McKay energetically opposed Maahs’s motion, saying the board already had plenty of time to give budget input and that it needed to get on with passing the budget instead of debating specific line items. In a familiar refrain, he said the implementation of education policy should be left to the education experts at the board office.
He said it was “beyond the ability of his mind to comprehend” why Maahs would attempt to change plans crafted by the superintendent, assistant superintendent and two directors of instruction who have a combined 24 years of post-secondary education and 94 years of education experience. Trustee Silvia Dyck also spoke against Maahs’s motion. She said training for resource teachers was vitally important but that she was willing to approve the budget as is and monitor the situation over the next year. Both Maahs’s motions were defeated and the budget approved, but not before a little more political grandstanding. Maahs reminded trustees of a pack of letters parents had sent this spring urging the board not to close the Watson and Little Mountain Early Success programs. She said closing the programs was a step in the wrong direction in light of a Supreme Court ruling last November that found the North Vancouver school district discriminated against a learning disabled student by failing to teach him how to read. Maahs said that case had “put reading methodology on trial.” “The reading methodology that won the day is the same kind of reading methodology that we are using in the Early Success classes,” she said. “And now I’m hearing that that is also going to change with the addition of the new early learning co-ordinator.” ◗ Tuesday’s meeting was the last public board meeting before the summer break. The next meeting is Sept. 17. For more information, visit www.sd33.bc.ca.

Gunfire from RCMP range won’t affect new ag school
UFV expects range will be moved before lease expires BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
H
orses and gunfire do not tend to mix well. So when the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) announced last week that the first stage of its new BC School of Agriculture would be completed this fall and include a barn with stables for cows and horses, the status of the neighbouring RCMP PRTC firing range once again became very relevant. But according to UFV vice-president, external, Harv McCullough, gunfire from the range should have a minimum impact on the university’s programs—in part because the range could fall silent sooner rather than later. The RCMP’s lease on the property was set to expire at the end of 2015. But they’ll likely be gone far sooner than that. “In a year’s time, they’ll be moving to a new range,” McCullough told the Times last week. UFV, meanwhile, will limit the livestock at the new facility in its first year. “There’s a very limited time that animals are in the barn,” McCullough said. The university’s current programs have students using a different type of animal each year. That will continue, and presum-

ably the larger, more spook-able species won’t be introduced to the barn until after the gunfire ceases next door. McCullough says the school eventually intends to have a variety of livestock inhabiting the barn at the same time. But by the time the program has been grown to that point, the firing range will be back in university hands. “The barn’s being built for the future, not necessarily for the present,” he said. (McCullough would personally like to see the covered range converted into a turfmanagement facility that could be used as an all-weather playing field by local soccer teams). McCullough also says the barn will be built to suppress outside noise, whatever its source.

We want everyone to make it home
SAFE THIS WEEKEND!
Safer City at the City of Chilliwack and the RCMP want everyone to make it home safe this Canada Day long weekend, by reminding drivers to make smart choices when travelling on Chilliwack’s roads. J Plan a safe ride home or stay the night - Don’t Drink and Drive. J Don’t push your limits on or in the water remember life jackets save lives - put yours on before you hit the water and leave it on. J Save A Life - call 911 if you see an impaired driver. If you exercise high risk driving behaviours, be prepared to meet the RCMP. Extra enforcement patrols will be out this weekend. By working together, we can all make it home safely.
Thanks Bruce, I have a young family, a husband and three kids and my life is very complex. I needed choice, customization and spending a lot of money on glasses was something I couldn’t justify. My Great Glasses experience was awesome. I didn’t need an appointment for my eye test and I got three pairs of glasses for less than I paid for one pair at my regular optical store. I couldn’t believe how great the deal was and how accommodating the staff were to me. I will not buy glasses anywhere but Great Glasses in the future. I’m so glad that Bruce was willing to fight for good customer value. Sincerely, Amy Gill

Crosswalk claims another victim
BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com
A
n elderly woman was lucky to escape with minor injuries after being struck on a Vedder Road crosswalk Tuesday. And it’s not the first time this particular crosswalk has seen a car-pedestrian collision. The crosswalk in question is south of Knight Road on Vedder Road, just north of Storey Avenue. Chilliwack RCMP spokespersonCpl.LenvanNieuwenhuizen said a northbound vehicle on Vedder was waiting for a southbound vehicle to turn left onto Storey. After doing so, the driver continued north and did not see an elderly woman on the marked crosswalk. “The pedestrian was alert and talking but was taken to hospital at the time to ensure she was alright,” vanNieuwenhuizen said. Anecdotal complaints have surfaced about the Storey/
Vedder crosswalk for years. He said the driver remained at the scene of the accident. In April 2012, a Times reader wrote a letter about a near tragic incident at the location. D’Arcy Surrette said that his wife Moira was stopped northbound in the curb lane at the crosswalk to let a young man across when a woman in a BMW in the inside lane did not slow down and nearly hit the young man. “However, w i t h q u i c k thinking on Moira’s part, she honked the horn at the pedestrian who was looking in the other direction and heading into certain death,” Surrette wrote. Close calls at four-lane crosswalks are not uncommon in Chilliwack and while pedestrians need to remain vigilant, vanNieuwenhuizen said drivers need to pay close attention in these situations. “Look twice before you proceed after you are stopped,” he said.
Cops track down prolific offender
C
hilliwack RCMP have arrested a prolific offender after tracking him to a downtown house. Shane Montgomery Blackall, 38, of Chiliwack was arrested June 14 in the 46000 block of 2nd Avenue as the RCMP executed a search warrant. Three days prior, on June 11, Mounties responded to a break-and-enter at downtown residence where computers and credit cards had been stolen. Investigators tracked transactions with
the stolen credit card and obtained enough evidence for the search warrant. During the search, police recovered stolen property and drugs, and arrested Blackall, a prolific offender. He’s been charged with one count of unathorized use of a credit card, one count of fraud under $5,000, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

inter Gardens is the most beautiful and iconic Fraser Valley tourist attraction that you’ve never been to. “You don’t know how many times we’ve heard ‘I’ve driven by so many times,’” Lisa MinterBustin told me Wednesday in a brief chat about this October’s closure of the tourist attraction, which first opened 33 years ago and has been a go-to destination for tourists from far and wide. “If we could just get you off the highway. . .” Everyone has heard of Minter Gardens. Everyone has driven by Minter Gardens, seen its iconic fountain and sign at the corner of Highways 1 and 9. But too few local people get off the highway or stop en route to or from Harrison Hot Springs or other places east. So with that all said, I have a confession to make: The closure of Minter Gardens is my fault. I’m sorry. I’m the most guilty in all of this. I’ve lived here for seven years and I only visited Minter Gardens Tuesday afternoon for the first time ever, after we found out officially that it would close in October of this year. Of course, it’s not entirely my fault, but it is the fault of people like me who love where we live,
PAUL J. HENDERSON
SimplyA Musing have people come visit us who love to be here, and then don’t drop a few dollars at the businesses that, at least in part, make it great to live/be here. The situation reminds me of some businesses that have come and gone in downtown Chilliwack. As I said, I’ve only been in the city since 2006, but the brief existence of Evangeline’s at the site of what was the Mill Street Café and is now the Harvest Café is a good example. Evangeline’s was a cool little eatery with gourmet, accessible food, walls that were used like a rotating art gallery for local creative types, all with a constant stream of bands performing live on weekends. This was an awesome place that could have, should have helped spur the revitalization of downtown. But no one went. I remember chatting with coowner Jamaal who lamented this after the closure was announced. People didn’t support the res-
taurant and then many of those same people grumbled when it closed. I was one of them. We can all be guilty of wanting certain types of businesses to be located in certain areas, talk to our neighbours about them when they exist, not spend money at them and then shake our heads when they are gone. But the bottom line will always be dollars. We have to put our money where our mouths are, visit attractions that we tell others about, eat at restaurants that we want to see in our neighbourhoods and shop at stores that we think make our community better. Of course, businesses themselves need to adapt as well. Harvest Café seems to be doing just fine on Mill Street and draws in quite a crowd over the lunch hour. Part of the problem with Evangeline’s, it seems to me, was that it was filling an un-needed niche for evening meals in a notyet-populated downtown. It was too cool. So if we love the fact that Minter Gardens, a world-class and world-loved show garden, is in our midst, we should have dropped a few dollars and visited from time to time. Not enough of us did and we may just regret it now. At least we have until October.
t was a good news story as far as open windows and children go. Last week a passerby in New York caught a child as the child plunged from an apartment balcony two storeys above. Unfortunately those stories are few and far between— most kids who fall from balconies or open windows do not fare as well. And, sadly, no matter how many times we will run an editorial like this warning parents about the dangers—it will happen this summer. This weekend, it’s supposed to warm up, and we expect folks will be opening windows and balconies. Last year, at least 29 children in B.C. were taken to hospital as a result of falling out of windows, and “several” have already been injured this spring, according to a press release from the Fraser Health Authority. It’s hard to imagine how a parent feels when their child has suffered severe injuries that may end up having long-term effects. When those injuries could have been prevented—it is even harder to imagine. Children like to explore and they like to go outside. If you think your child will not put him or herself in a dangerous situation, think again. Putting a chair up against an open space is not enough to prevent a child from working his or her way outside. And, of course, windows next to beds in bedrooms are invitations to look out, lean over too far and then fall out. Here are some safety tips: Talk to children about window and balcony safety; move furniture, especially cribs and beds, and planters away from windows and balcony edges to discourage children from climbing; install and maintain window safety devices—ensure there is a safe release option in case of a house fire; keep windows open no more than 10 centimetres—children can fit through a space as small as 12 cm; never leave children unattended on balconies or in higher floor rooms with open windows. Please enjoy the warm weather, but be cautious.

bought a plate compactor and cement mixer via the Internet. I felt fortunate to outbid my fellow bidders without breaking the bank. After an exhausting eighthour round-trip from my home up the coast, I had the items home. While the compactor was advertised as new, the mixer advert didn’t indicate it was new, but the online pictures suggested it was near new. It was nicely wrapped up, and tied down to a pallet. Even had labeling under the plastic. Well, after unwrapping my “present,” it turned out the consignee had wrapped up a piece of junk. It was almost laughable if it wasn’t for the fact I had dropped $900 for it. I was thinking I just bought a $900 orange tub (only thing useful). I am not a detective, nor would you have to be, when looking at the cement mixer’s issues. Using fence wire as a spark plug wire was the brashest substitute. I could have electrocuted myself. Anyways, what to do? I know that when one buys something via auction, it is sold “as is,” no warranty, no nothing. However, this purchase really felt like a setup. So, I send pictures off to Ritchie Bros., not really hoping for much, as they are just facilitating the sale, not the owners of said items. Well, with in hours I had a call from the local rep, Lawrence (I sent him the funny
pictures). Within a couple of days, I had a call from the Chilliwack yard manager telling me they were going to refund me all my money. Unbelievable. Now, they were under no obligation to refund me my money, but they stepped up and delivered. I was so relieved to have been relieved of my $900 orange tub. Nice to see a company do the right thing even if they were not obligated on paper to do so. Thanks Ritchie Bros. and kudos. Melli MacMillan Vancouver Island

What was the original reason? Editor: Re: “She needs to be a role model,” Chilliwack Times, June 25. I would take issue with Our View that Premier Christy Clark deserves any brownie points at all. Perhaps she could explain why the pay raises were justified in the first place. We (the payees) would like like to know, I’m quite sure. Her “flip-flop” on this just could have somthing to do with the upcoming byelection. I was kinda hoping she would have won in West Point Grey and the upcoming byelection wouldn’t be necessary, but now I’m not so sure or, at least, I couldn’t care less. Personally, I will not refer to her as premier until she is elected. I am sure there are many MLAs that could/would do the job if she is defeated. Clark could have/should have set an example when she went through a red light with her son and a reporter in the car. She was stopped at the light and then proceded to run the red light at her son’s command/cries. Obeying her son is more serious than running the red light. This was an excellent opportunity to counsel her son on doing the right thing. Old Proverb: “Woe unto the home where parents obey their children.” In my opinion Christy has some growing up to do. Editor: On June 14, Watson elementary students, staff, families and friends were treated to an extraordinary event—our annual carnival. It was a great night filled with games, bouncy castles, train rides, dunk tanks, slip and slides, cake walks and so many other things. It was a wonderful time for families and friends to get together, laugh and play. We know that an event of this magnitude does not just happen but is the result of countless volunteer hours. We would like to thank our fabulous PAC group for all their time and effort that was required to put on such a fantastic carnival. We loved it. Editor: Re: How does your garden grow, Chilliwack Times, June 20. I was reading the Our View editorial in the paper and was a little disgusted in the idea of gardening in the vacant Paramount Theatre lot. It is not agricultural land. What is our our city council thinking? What next, chickens in the empty lot across the street producing for free eggs? Free milk from cows on the old courthouse lot? Downtown is not classified as agriculture. I can’t believe they can turn the downtown into agricultural land without the OK from us taxpayers. We are not moving forward here in Chilliwack, we are going backwards. Leave well enough alone, you already destroyed our historic Paramount building. I have one more complaint about the City of Chilliwack: How can a church be built on retail land downtown? What is your next crazy idea? Hazel Beaulieu Chilliwack

n baseball when a pitcher starts and finishes a game it’s called a complete game. That doesn’t happen very often. Pitchers are paid millions of dollars a year to start games without any expectation to finish. All they need to do is give a quality start and then around the fifth or sixth inning the coach calls the bullpen and relieves them. Wouldn’t it be great if life was like that? If all that was expected of you and me was to have a quality start and then be relieved?
How many wives would like to be provided with a relief husband once in a while? How many parents would welcome a relief teenager into their home when their own gets out of line? How many employees would love the benefit of bringing in a relief boss now and then? You get the picture. But that’s not life is it? Life is more than simply having a quality start. What’s most important in life is how you finish. That’s why most people live with some kind of regret. Regrets surface in our lives because of the things we never finished. You see it in people’s lives when they say

God wants to remind you that he has begun a good work in you. Your regrets don’t have to get the last word in your life. He won’t give up on you even if you give up on him. He will always

If I were a dog..
I would want to live free. I would want to have an owner that would let me hang my head out of the window and bark at pedestrians. I would want to run around the inside of the car and help my owner navigate. Better yet, I would want to surf in the back of a truck unsecured with the air flowing through my hair, my ears flapping in the breeze and my slobber just a-flying. But I’m not a dog. I’m a dog doctor and as such, I know too much. I’ve seen firsthand the gruesome injuries sustained by dogs riding in vehicles unrestrained. I’ve had patients that jumped out of vehicles and have been run over. I’ve seen many dog break limbs as they have jumped or fallen out of the back of trucks. I’ve had a recent case of a dog that sustained a serious spinal injury as a result of being unrestrained in a fatal car accident. Most owners don’t realize the danger of dogs riding unrestrained in the back of a vehicle nor do they know it’s against the law. Section 72 of the BC Motor Vehicle Act prohibits the transport of an unsecured pet in the back of a pick-up truck. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act you can even be charged for cruelty to animals if your pet is injured! As responsible pet owners, we should see ourselves as pet guardians and take the following steps when transporting our animals: 1.Keep your pet inside the vehicle. Use a secured crate or dog seatbelt to restrain your pet. Keep your dog out of the front seat. Unrestrained pets are a major distraction to drivers and can cause vehicle collisions. In a crash, pets become flying objects and can cause serious injury to themselves and others. Invest in a doggie seat belt harness, a pet travel crate, or a cat/dog cargo barrier. 2.If you must transport your pet in the back of a truck, use a secured crate in the centre of the truck box or, tether your dog with secure and short harness to ensure safety from strangulation and death. 3.Roll up the windows - Your dog’s head should be kept inside at all times. Dogs are at risk of suffering from eye infections or sustaining injuries from flying debris , bugs etc… 4.Never leave pets unattended - On hot summer days, cars can heat up very quickly to dangerous temperatures. Cars are like ovens, they will cook your hot dog to death. Cracking the windows doesn’t cut it. It can become a death trap even on a mild sunny day, raising the car’s temperature to well above 120 degrees! Never, ever leave your pet inside the car. If your pet can’t come with you when you get out of the car, leave him at home. Like the famous philosopher Rousseau stated “Man (and dogs) are born free but everywhere they are in chains”. It is our responsibility to our pets whereby they must give up certain freedoms in exchange for their own health and well-being. Protect your pets while they are traveling with you in a vehicle.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT
The detail and scope of our application is matched only by our determination to do it right. WRITTEN BY JANET HOLDER
Janet Holder Janet Holder is a proud Britsh Columbian and the senior executive responsible for the Northern Gateway
Project. Janet lives and works in Prince George.
After a decade of careful planning, our application is now before the regulatory authorities. But that doesn’t mean we are finished in making the case for Northern Gateway to British Columbians and all Canadians. The Northern Gateway Project Joint Review Panel (JRP) deadline for Final Argument has come and gone, and we believe we made the best case for an energy pipeline application ever in Canada’s history. Critical questions, affirmative answers. It all boils down to two questions the JRP must address in their report to the Governorin-Council. One is whether Gateway is in the Canadian public interest, and the second

Participants is the Project’s likelihood of causing significant adverse environmental impacts. The answers are clear. Gateway is urgently needed, meets all requirements for approval under the National Energy Board Act and is definitely in Canada’s interest. Given the commitments and safety measures we have proposed, the Project is not likely to cause significant adverse effects on the environment. Backed by independent experts in their fields. Northern Gateway’s written and oral JPR evidence was prepared and presented by many of Canada’s and the world’s foremost experts on the related subjects. Each had thorough knowledge of the Project and the relevant scientific and engineering studies completed in support of the Project. Their evidence in favour of Gateway was comprehensive, conclusive and compelling. Unprecedented in scope, detail and potential. Our application was defended by answering thousands of Information Requests and presenting a series of nine witness panels. Together with our partners, we will have spent approximately $500 million on this Project, before receiving approval, including environmental assessments, traditional land use studies, detailed engineering and consultation with communities and First Nations—all over the course of a decade.
Our application details the enormous value of connecting Canadian resources to markets that need those resources for their own economic and social development. We are completely confident that Gateway can be designed, constructed and operated in a safe and responsible manner— first and foremost. Flowing from this, there are the enormous benefits in terms of jobs and dollars to support schools, hospitals and social programs that define this country and this province.

SNORING?
SLEEP APNEA?
As recommended by Dr. Gifford-Jones M. D.
Loose muscles
in the throat cause snoring, also interrupted breathing and gasping for air (sleep apnea), which brings on being tired all day, need for napping, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, irregular heart beat. Read below how Bell helps thousands, usually first night, inexpensively, with no side effects. Greatly improves quality of life and saves marriages. Survey says 48% snore and 75% are suffering if you include the silent suffering partners. To my surprise, after taking BellSound Sleep #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel #23 rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH ! Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS ! For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS !It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON.

James Bennewith
November 3, 1924 - June 21, 2013
It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our dad James Bennewith who passed away peacefully at Cascade Lodge in Chilliwack. Jim was predeceased by his wife Mabel in December 1998. He is survived by his daughters Dolores Michaloski (Phillip) of Chilliwack and Charlene Harrison of Cranbrook, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dad fought a brave battle with cancer this past year and we would like to thank Dr. MacIntosh for his kind and caring compassion. We would also like to thank the girls who looked after him daily before he went to Cascade Lodge. He will be sadly missed by all that know and loved him. There will be no funeral service at this time, but a small family memorial at a later date. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society

It is with profound sadness we announce that Craig James Davies, 63, of Chilliwack, BC, passed away on June 17, 2013 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Craig was born to the late Arthur and Dorothy Davies in New Westminster, BC on November 9, 1949. Growing up as an Air Force brat, he lived with his family in Bagotville, Quebec; Zweibrucken, Germany; and Gimli and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Craig flourished growing up in these very diverse places, was a role model for his little sister Bonnie, making friends instantly and almost as instantly learning to communicate in French and German. He graduated from Gimli High School and continued on to receive a diploma from Red River College in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As an adult he moved to Langley, BC where he raised his family and lived for many years before moving on to Lindell Beach and then Garrison Crossing Chilliwack. He was very proud of the years he spent coaching hockey for his two sons and many, many other young hockey players in Langley. Craig met his wife Kathy Davies (O’Brien) and they began their life together in 2000. They married on November 18, 2008 on a quiet beach in Hawaii. Together Craig and Kate enjoyed renovating and decorating their homes, creating beautiful gardens entertaining friends and travelling abroad and in Canada. Craig was the owner of Design One, a graphic design studio in Langley for 35 years. He was very well respected in the Langley business community and was awarded the distinction of Business Person of the Year in 2011. Craig gave willingly of his time and expertise in various volunteer roles during the many years he spent in Langley, and was a dedicated member of the Downtown Langley Business Association. He had an amazing talent for photography, particularly black and white, and recently enjoyed sharing his photographic adventures on his blog, www.thethingsisee.ca. He was enamored with travelling in general, but had a real passion for France where he visited often. Craig had many interests and was a collector of rare and first edition books, Canadian stamps, local artwork and antique bottles, to name just a few. Craig was a gifted conversationalist and genuinely loved people. He had a unique capacity to connect and made an impact on everyone who knew him. He was kind, generous and had a keen sense of fairness. He was a strong leader and a perfectionist. Those who knew him well will recall these common Craigisms – “Don’t poke the bear” and “If it’s not perfect, it’s s**t”. Craig was predeceased by his stepson Corey, and is survived by his two sons from his first marriage to Bev Davies (Maly): Garth Davies and his wife Deborah, and Grant Davies and his wife TerriLee. Craig is also survived by his sister Bonnie Davies and her husband William; his Aunt Bonnie Howe and her husband Don; his four grandchildren Adam, Royce, Leila, and Keeley; and will be sorely missed by the rest of his relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Cascades Casino Hotel & Convention Centre in Langley.

Dear Dutchess (Joan), 10 years have slipped by without you. But as I reflect on the past I think of these things. The sun was shining the day we met. We laughed, we shared many happy moments together. We thought we had all kinds of years ahead, but that was not to be. As each season that comes my way, one thing that is for sure and that is my dear Dutchess is this, I miss you Dutchess until we meet again. Enjoy the roses and flowers in God’s garden and all that heaven has for you. Love, George Postnikoff
