A

local couple is in the running for a prestigious award that re cognizes young farmers who uphold outstanding conservation, community-relations and business practices. Jacqueline and Richard Boer are finalists for the 2014 BC & Yukon Outstanding Young Farmer Award, which makes them the second area-farmers to be shortlisted in the last two years, after Peter and Nicole Tuytel won the award in 2012.

Third-generation dairy farmers honoured to be up for prestigious Outstanding Young Farmer Award Jacqueline, 31, was born and raised on Elmido Farms in Chilliwack and husband Richard, 30, grew up on a dairy farm in Agassiz. Both are third-generation dairy farmers and family shareholders of Elmido Farms, which they have been operating alongside family for the last eight years. “I was surprised that we got nominated because I think what we do is

fairly ordinary in the realm of farming,” Jacqueline says. “I think we would like to win but it’s an opportunity . . . and just an honour to be able to go out and be involved in the process.” Together with Jacqueline’s parents and her three brothers, the Boers take on the task of managing a dairy farm with 320 registered, purebred holstein dairy cows—the clas-

sic dairy cow with black and white colouring—on their sprawling 350acre property that borders Evans and Lickman Roads. The property is divided into two farms, with cows on the larger farm currently producing 37.8 litres of milk a day on average, and the smaller, 27 litres. The husband and wife team are also co-operators of the Lower Nico-

la Cattle Company in Merritt, where their young stock of cattle reside. In May 2013, they diversified into specialty broiler production with the establishment of Brightside Poultry. As Elmido’s herd manager, Richard takes care of farm operations and everything related to animal health, husbandry and welfare. “I’m in charge of everything with a heartbeat,” Richard says. “I have people that help me milk the cows, and I have a really good herdsman that helps me manage counting cows and See FARMERS, Page 23

January Jan. 1 A prison guard at Kent Institution could find himself on the other side of the bars after being arrested for allegedly smuggling marijuana and meth into the maximum-security jail. Paul Fleming, 42, of Agassiz, was arrested at Kent at 6 a.m on Boxing Day and was charged with two counts of trafficking a controlled drug.

Jan. 1 At the Combat Engineers’ Canada Education Park compound, 36 Army Reserve combat engineers built a 12-metre bridge by hand in five hours. Hundreds of reservists sappers from across Western Canada and Ontario were in Chilliwack in the last weekend of December to take part in Exercise Paladin Response 2012. The exercises were meant to test and improve the leadership and technical skills of the sappers, with a focus on water crossings.

Jan. 3 For the second time in six years, Chilliwack’s New Year’s Baby was not born on Jan. 1. There were no births on the first day of 2013 at Chilliwack General Hospital and none by 10 a.m. on Jan. 2, although one woman had gone into labour, according to Fraser Health.

Jan. 8 Chamber of Commerce executive director Patti MacAhonic will vie for the NDP nomination for the Chilliwack riding in the spring provincial election. When asked what motivated her to run, MacAhonic said she wanted to see a government with integrity. She was given a leave of absence from her role in the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce.

Jan. 10 The Chilliwack school board is being tight-lipped about its response to a Ministry of Education request for B.C. school boards to find savings to pay for salary increases for support staff. The board held in-camera meeting on the issue, but would not say whether they opted to follow the B.C. government’s request to eliminate 1.5 per cent from this year’s budget ($300,000) and another 1.5 per cent in next year’s, or write a letter to the minister of education in opposition.

Jan. 15 A Chilliwack family is recovering after two armed men stormed into their house Saturday evening and demanded money. Just after 11 p.m., the men—one armed with a handgun, the other with a machete-like knife—kicked open the door of a house in the 44000 block of Bayshore Drive. The robbers made off with thousands of dollars worth of high-end computers, phone and camera equipment.

Jan. 17 The growing toll of influenza has forced Fraser Health to declare the flu a “health hazard” and impose restrictions at residential care facilities throughout the valley. Fraser Health says 19 long-term care facilities have reported outbreaks of the flu this year. That number is twice as many as reported in the previous three years combined.

Jan. 17 A 54-year-old Chilliwack woman found unresponsive close to the CN tracks west of Broadway on Tuesday was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead. It appears that no train was involved in the incident as emergency personnel contacted CN to notify them to stop trains. Police say the incident does not appear to be suspicious.

Jan. 22 Chilliwack New Democrats chose former Chamber of Commerce executive director Patti MacAhonic as their candidate for the May 14 provincial election on Saturday. MacAhonic faced off against Fraser Valley Regional District Area A

Chilliwack’s residential property values are virtually unchanged from a year ago. Most owners of single-family homes should see no change at all in the value of their properties in the 2013 assessment notices they should receive in the next few days. Jan. 24 A judge condemned the friends and family of a convicted pedophile last month after they sought to excuse the man’s behaviour by blaming his victim. The 32-year-old man, who can’t be named because of a publication ban, had pleaded guilty to sexual interference of a person under the age of 16. According to the decision, the man repeatedly had sex with his 13-year-old daughter over the course of several months. The judge admonished family and community members, including two pastors, who filed letters of support for the man, saying he had been “tricked” and that the victim was “promiscuous.”

February Feb. 5 Activists opposed to salmon farming recently staged the second of three planned protests at major Chilliwack retailers on Friday. The Chilliwack chapter of Salmon Feedlot Boycott have been hosting peaceful protests at stores that sell Atlantic farmed salmon, with the most recent demonstration taking place at Walmart at Eagle Landing.

Feb. 5 Chilliwack man Marc Joseph Cadieux was sentenced to more than a year in jail after pleading guilty to one count of impersonating an officer using a uniform and one count of using an imitation firearm to commit an offence in Provincial Court on Thursday. Cadieux was apprehended by police after he attempted to steal an ATM machine at a local gas station in May, while dressed as a police officer. Cadieux was accompanied by another man at the time.

Feb. 7 A battle is brewing between Chilliwack and the local health authority after Fraser Health told council that the city must begin chlorinating its water. Citing the discovery of E.coli in the Chilliwack water system over three of the last four summers, Fraser Health told council the city will be required to add chlorine to its water. Council questioned the necessity of adding chlorine to the water system and held a staunch position against the idea.

Feb. 7 Three different monuments testifying to Chilliwack’s vibrant military history at CFB Chilliwack are being given new life by local donors and the CFB Chilliwack Historical Society. The historical society is raising money to restore the 63-year-old saluting base that currently sits on University of Fraser Valley grounds beside Caen Road. The society is selling engraved bricks and hopes to raise $25,000 towards the monument’s refurbishment.

Feb. 12 Coun. Jason Lum said he would like to see a stronger police presence in Yarrow following a spate of property crime in the area. Lum, who lives in Yarrow, told council there has been an increase in crime in the area recently. According to Const. Tracy Wolbeck, the increase in property crime is not limited to Yarrow, and police will be upping their presence in Chilliwack’s rural areas.

Feb. 12 Local First Nations advisors have told the Chilliwack school district to go into more detail regarding the residential school experience in three high school English courses. School District No. 33 has been working with Sto:lo First Nations elders and advisors to customize English First Peoples 10, 11, 12 with

local content. The classes are a set of English courses focused entirely on works by aboriginal and indigenous people from around the world.

Feb. 14 School district officials hope two arrests made by RCMP this weekend will put an end to a rash of school break-ins that started at the beginning of January. Over the last month and a half, there have been almost three times as many break-ins at School District No. 33 buildings than the previous four months combined—with 12 incidents in January and 16 in February. A woman and man, both in their 30s, were arrested at the back of Tyson elementary at 4 a.m. on Feb. 10 and charged with one count of break and enter each.

Feb. 14 Mounties are warning the public to protect their identification after learning of a Chilliwack man who has been fraudulently buying booze with other people’s credit card data. Police say a liquor store in the Vedder area discovered late January that a customer had made several fraudulent credit card transactions over the previous six months.

Feb. 19 Thirty years ago today, 10-year-old Jo-Ann Pedersen made a phone call from a phone booth at the Penny Pinchers convenience store at the corner of Watson and Vedder roads in Chilliwack. Feb. 19 Multiple petitions are now competing for the attention of Chilliwack school officials as they prepare to decide whether or not to allow free Bibles to be distributed at local public schools. A parent-led initiative in support of keeping bibles as an “option” for students collected 46 signatures by press time, while a similar campaign led by a church attracted 392 signatures. A petition in opposition of free Bibles on school property attracted 330 signatures, with 271 coming from outside of Chilliwack. See FEBRUARY, Page 10

n a year where TransLink apologists seemed to have thrown every possible tax grab—sales tax hikes, vehicle levies, road pricing, carbon tax—at the wall to see if anything would stick, one idea stood above the rest for its sheer ludicrousness. The envelope please . . . “The award for the dumbest public policy suggestion of 2013 goes to . . . (dramatic pause) the TransLink border tax!” This toll-the-borders loser was suggested at one of the dozen or so transportation summits/conferences/ gabfests funded by your tax dollars this year. While initially pooh-poohed as “a bit tongue in cheek” by attendees such as NDP MLA Selina Robinson, the idea continues to surface in the media and has even been sent south for some number crunching. Essentially, a toll would be slapped on B.C. drivers just before they crossed the border into the United States from Point Roberts to Sumas. Toll booths would be set up on 264th Street, 176th Street, Highway 99, Highway 11, and 56th Street. A U.S. organization claims such a $5 roundtrip toll could generate $38 million for TransLink. There is no doubt that lower gas taxes are drawing Canadians south. In May, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation released calculations showing that the untaxed cost of gasoline is virtually identical between Blaine, WA, and Surrey, B.C. It is the 34 cents/litre gas tax gap that makes Washington State gasoline so attractive—saving drivers roughly $18 per fill-up.

Be Our Guest Add in the savings on groceries, milk, cheese, flights, and consumer goods, and it’s no wonder why Whatcom County is seeing its highest number of Canadian visitors since the mid-1990s. But the solution to the gas tax gap is not to tax Canadians even more; the better plan to address Canadian issues like the federal government charging GST on gas purchases—a tax-on-tax. The TransLink border tax is rubbish, but keeps getting media attention. Main proponent Eric Doherty, who holds an M.A. in planning and is a former director of both the BC Sustainable Energy Association and Society Promoting Environmental Conservation, is over the top in his push for this silly plan: “There’s a perception that whatever we do needs to be fair,” he said. “And it’s not fair that people are evading paying their fair share of taxes.” Hear that, Canadians? Every time you cross the border, according to Doherty, you are breaking the law by “evading” taxes. You’re just like Leona Helmsley, Martha Stewart, Al Capone, Heidi Fleiss, Pete Rose, O.J. Simpson and other famous tax evaders. Such a statement is utter non-

sense, of course. There is nothing illegal about crossing a border. Undoubtedly Mr. Doherty must also think those who buy local craft beer are also evil “tax evaders” as they pay less taxes than if they had purchased one of the big name brands. You can bet proponents won’t stop at tolling the U.S. border. In their minds, Lower Mainlanders who go east for cheaper gas must also be “tax evaders.” After all, from 2007 to 2010, Abbotsford’s population grew 5.3 per cent, while diesel and gasoline sales grew 16.8 per cent. Perhaps border tax proponents should also consider taxing every road in and out of the TransLink taxation area. Roads to and from Mission better get taxed too. From 2007 to 2010, the TransLink tax-free community grew 3.6 per cent in population, while fuel sales jumped 14.7 per cent. This year, B.C. taxpayers have endured property tax hikes, BC Hydro increases, ICBC rate hikes, MSP premium increases, TransLink tax and fare hikes, CPP and EI premium increases, BC Ferries fare hikes, and a myriad of other increases handed down by various government agencies. The sooner TransLink supporters understand that everyday Canadians are stretched thin, the quicker we can move on to figuring out how TransLink can live within its means. ◗ Jordan Bateman is the British Columbia director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

ast week the Conservative federal government opted not to address the very urgent and growing problem that is the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP). Instead offering any sort of meaningful reform or choosing to adequately fund CPP so that Canadians can expect to be taken care of—after having spent a lifetime of paying taxes—the Conservatives instead opted to do nothing, and presumably hope the problem just goes away. It’s no secret that CPP is underfunded. And given the country’s demographics —with millions of Canadians facing retirement in coming years—this is an issue that can’t be put off any longer. Seniors now make up close to 15 per cent of Canada’s population, totalling more than four million people. And with the median age in Canada now over 40 years old for the first time ever, the issue of our aging population and how to take care of them isn’t going away. The issue is clear to see: Canadians are living longer, and as a result, drawing on CPP more than in generations past. As a result, we need to do a better job of funding CPP if we want it to work. Finance minister Jim Flaherty needn’t worry about his own financial future, of course. As an MP who has served more than six years in the house of commons, Flaherty has a gold-plated taxpayer-funded pension to draw on for the rest of his life, upon his retirement. The rest of us aren’t so lucky. Adequately funding CPP is the fiscally responsible thing to do, but it is also politically difficult. As a result, the Conservatives have taken the easy way out, opting for the instant gratification of low taxes in the present at the cost of a stable future for our citizens. And isn’t that how we got into this mess in the first place?

Just trying to do the right thing Editor: I am wondering why the RCMP are always asking for the public’s help to solve a case and when I give it they turn on me. I was tailgated by a fully loaded tandem dump with pup, idiot trucker on Highway 1 and decided to use my cellphone to gather the evidence the police are continuously asking for. The trucker saw me videoing his stupidity and unbeknownst to me, called the highway patrol and said I was the cause of this tailgating by spiking my brakes, a lie, and driving erratically, also a lie. I got pulled over by highway patrol 25 minutes later. I was not breaking any laws when pulled over, and the first thing the cop asked was, “was I using my phone to video this idiot tailgating me?” I said, “yes” and she said, “That’s a ticket for using a device while driving.” I said, “give me the ticket and we’ll see each other again in court,” as I have 10 times the training as a driver than any cop and looked forward to arguing my case in court. I never got the ticket or anything else for that matter. Anyhow, the cops didn’t care about my evidence and this idiot dump-truck driver goes

I used to be very outgoing and social, I am now 73 and a recluse, with only worse things to look forward to. I live on $1,500 a month and cannot pay for a therapist. Feb. 21 The number of licensed medical marijuana growers in Chilliwack has tripled since last year. According to figures obtained through an Access to Information request in January 2012, 193 residents were licensed to produce marijuana for medical purposes. As of last week, there were 513 individuals in Chilliwack who hold personal use production licences (PUPL), and 77 who hold designated person production licenses (DPPL), which, if last year’s figure includes PUPLs and DPPLs, is approximately a three-fold or 206 per cent increase.

he Chilliwack Chiefs had dreams of pucks bulging twine over Christmas after a stunning last game before the holidays to break an 11-game losing streak. Led by Mathieu Tibbet’s four goals and a seven-goal team output in the first period, the Chiefs destroyed the visiting Trail Smoke Eaters 13-5 at Prospera Centre Saturday night. While the Smoke Eaters were the only team in the league with a worse record, few could have expected a game that included 20 Chiefs’ shots in the first period and four goals in six minutes. After a spell of loss after loss, the win, even

against the lowly Smoke Eaters, will have to boost confidence in a team where it’s been sorely lacking. Friday night the Chiefs lost that 11th straight game 7-2 to the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings at home. That loss was the culmination of three straight losses to the Spruce Kings dating back to last weekend in which they allowed 19 goals and scored eight. Nine different Chiefs scored Saturday against Trail and 16 players notched a goal, an assist or both. In addition to Tibbet, other standouts were Austin Plevy who scored one and had three assists, and Cooper Rush with four assists. ◗ The Chiefs’ next games are both against Surrey, Dec. 28 in Surrey and Dec. 29 back at Prospera.

YEARINREVIEW March March 5 The owner of an Indian restaurant in Chilliwack who received a racist email last week received messages of apology from the same address Monday morning. Bay Leaf Restaurant owner, Sumit Gulati, told the RCMP about the email in which an anonymous writer said the business, which as been open for more than two years, will fail. Following international media coverage, the writer of the derogatory email apologized, citing he or she was having a bad day and suffers from mental issues.

March 5 Although tests are clear, chlorine continues to be added to Chilliwack’s drinking water. Last Thursday, a day after Chilliwack’s emergency chlorination system was turned on for the first time—due to a low level of E.coli that was found at a test site in Greendale—resampling for E. coli came back clear. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the positive test, and chlorination of the water system will continue until Fraser Health says it is OK to stop.

March 7 Less than 12 hours after he allegedly murdered Robert Jan Planje, Steven Kenneth Frederickson explained the blood on his jeans to a fellow junkie by saying, “some people think because I’m deaf, I’m weak,” according to testimony at his trial Tuesday. Crown counsel alleges Frederickson beat Planje to death in the early morning hours of Dec. 13, 2010. The testimony was given by Michelle Bakstad, a former drug addict, who told the court she saw Frederickson the morning of Dec. 13, 2010 at a crack house with damaged knuckles and bloodied jeans.

A former City of Chilliwack employee is alleged to have stolen thousands of dollars of cash from the Chilliwack RCMP detachment’s main exhibit room. A routine audit of the exhibit room found $37,000 Cdn, $46 US and nearly $4,000 in Government of Canada cheques were missing. Jamie Tiller, 36, has been charged with theft over $5,000.

To the disappointment of council, the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) issued formal notice that a secondary disinfectant is required to be added to Chilliwack’s drinking water on March 7. Continued chlorination or secondary disinfectant of the water system will be required after fecal coliform and E. coli has been detected in Chilliwack’s water system over the years, said FHA chief medical officer Dr. Paul Van Buynder.

YEARINREVIEW April April 2 Honey, a four-year-old chihuahua that stepped in to rescue 8-year-old Jenna during a pit bull attack, was recognized with a “Small Dog, Big Hero” from PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) a week after the incident. In addition to a certificate of honour, Honey’s family was given a bag of vegan dog treats, a new harness and a toy.

April 2 The Indigenous Maps, Films, Rights and Land Claims program at the University of the Fraser Valley will run for the fourth time in Chilliwack this summer. The four-week intensive program was launched four years ago to give people interested in land claims some essential background on how First Nations lands and resources were first taken away and the different methods aboriginal people have used to get them back.

April 4 Mayor Sharon Gaetz said a number of communities in the interior have watched closely as the City of Chilliwack battled the Fraser Health Authority over the water chlorination edict. Reporting back from the recent Municipal Finance Authority of BC meeting, Gaetz told council that the Interior Health Authority and some regional districts were “keenly aware” of what happened in Chilliwack, with some districts even talking about hiring lawyers to “protect their interests.”

April 9 A local family was awarded $3.2 million in damages after the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously restored a decision this month against an obstetrician, William G. Johnston, for breaching standard of care during their daughter’s birth in 1998. Cassidy Ediger, 15, suffered from permanent brain damage due to a botched delivery and now lives with spastic quadriplegia and cerebral palsy. The money, which was awarded after a 12-year-long battle, will allow her family to care for her at home.

April 11 Corn farmer Gord Mitchell said he will physically stop natural gas pipeline owner, Spectra, from coming

onto his property if the company is not willing to negotiate. Specta is due to replace three kilometres of pipeline on a stretch that runs from just west of Prest Road across Luckakuck Way and through the Cottonwood Mall parking lot in June. The pipeline also runs beneath corn fields owned by Mitchell. The farmer has had an unhappy relationship with Spectra since they performed an emergency dig in 2011 during spring planting season, leading to topsoil damage and missed planting.

April 11 A driver involved in a deadly 2011 crash in Harrison Hot Springs that killed a Delta teen and injured another woman has pleaded guilty to two charges. Suhkvir Singh Grewal entered guilty pleas Tuesday to charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection to a crash on June 4, 2011, that killed 19-year-old Drew Helgason and injured Courtney Lewis.

May 14 A convicted fraudster’s decision to skip his sentencing hearing and leave British Columbia backfired last Friday when he was handed a one-year jail sentence in Supreme Court. Last June, a jury found Marc Colman guilty of defrauding the CFB Chilliwack Historical Society and two banks out of more than $38,000 by writing bad cheques.

May 2 Chilliwack’s Touch-n-Tan 24/7, the first 24-hour, self-serve tanning salon in B.C., is under fire from the member association that advocates on behalf of Canadian tanning salons for offering around-the-clock services. Clients use a special key fob to access tanning beds after hours, which could be 2 a.m. on a holiday or 5 a.m. before the salon opens on a work day. The Joint Canadian Tanning Association wants the B.C. government to ban self-serve tanning, citing room for error.

May 16 John Martin was elected BC Liberal MLA for Chilliwack on May 14 by a surprisingly large margin. Martin took 48 per cent of the approximately 19,500 ballots cast in Chilliwack, 17 points more than his close challenger, New Democrat Patti MacAhonic. Martin’s victory in a long-held BC Liberal riding came alongside a win by fellow Liberal candidate Laurie Throness in Chilliwack-Hope, who garnered more than 9,500 votes, or 49 per cent of the approximately 19,300 ballots.

A Chilliwack man who fled B.C. after being convicted of stealing thousands of dollars from two local non-profits has been arrested in Ontario. Marc Colman was convicted last July of defrauding the Chilliwack Métis Association of more than $33,000 and of defrauding the CFB Chilliwack Historical Society of nearly $8,000 while serving as treasurer of both organizations.

Local parents who have been lobbying the Chilliwack school district for an early French immersion program for almost two years were devastated Tuesday when the school board voted against starting a program anytime soon. A feasibility study recommend the program start no earlier than 2014, but on May 14, the board defeated a motion to start it in 2014. The program is projected to cost $578,035 the first year and $3.9 million over the next five years.

After more 200 court appearances, Patricia Kelly was granted absolute discharge in Chilliwack court on May 9, and will be paid $2,484. Kelly was charged with purchasing, selling and possession of fish against the Fisheries Act in 2004. She was convicted in 2008, and then put forth an aboriginal rights defence, which she was in court trying to prove since that time.

Jerry Awram, owner of Honeyview Farm in Rosedale, says the demand for honeybee hives far outweighs what he’s able to supply. The availability of honeybee hives, used by farmers to pollinate large crops, has been on a slow decline since border regulations implemented in the late ‘80s stopped the import of honeybees. Closures of two honeybee suppliers in Alberta has also increased the demand for Awram’s honeybees. As a result, pollination fees have gone up, and Awram suspects the same will happen to the price of crops in the future.

See it as more a ‘lifestyle’ than a job WHAT’S ON, from page 29 general animal health.” In between milking 320 cows twice a day, overseeing the birth of one to sometimes seven calves daily, 3 a.m. wake-up calls and breakfasts that begin well into the afternoon, the life of a dairy farmer is a hectic one. But in a calm and plain-spoken tone, Richard says it’s a career he always knew he would pursue and one that he enjoys “very much.” “I think being a dairy farmer, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” he says. A majority of the labour on the farm is undertaken by Richard and family, while Jacqueline handles the paperwork, accounting and administrative tasks. She is also a member of the Chilliwack Agricultural Commission and a past director of the Mainland Milk Producers’ Association. Operating in a fairly urban area, the couple also hosts tours for schools and seniors groups and people who are curious about their family business. “We try and market ourselves, our farm, through farm tours and just having an open door to anybody that stops by,” Richard says. Jacqueline’s grandparents, whom she fondly refers to as

The Boer family are thankful for their parents who made dairy farming possible for them. Opa and Oma, established Elmido Farms in 1960. Her family still lives and operates the business on the same site today. “I think our parents made this lifestyle and business viable for us by keeping their business growing and also by making this lifestyle appealing to us,” Jacqueline says of dairy farming. “We were raised to love it and our kids love it too.” Their three young children, aged three, five and seven, can often be found happily romping around the farm, bottle feeding calves, pushing wheelbarrows full of hay, tugging equipment with their bikes, and petting their family

favourite cows and calves. “They’re such a huge part of what we do,” Jacqueline says. While working with animals is one of the reasons why Richard enjoys what he does, the main perk of being a dairy farmer is: “Being able to spend more time with my kids than most guys.” According to a BC & Yukon Outstanding Farmer press release, nominees will be judged on conservation practices, production history, financial and management practices, and community contributions. There are four finalists vying for the award, and winners will be judged and announced on Jan. 16 in Abbotsford.

June June 4 An ambitious plan to develop a Chilliwack-area ski resort was used by the project’s director to bilk investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, the B.C. Securities Commission (BSSC) alleges. The commission says Ronald Stephen McHaffie “committed fraud and illegally distributed securities” between August 2007 and January 2012. McHaffie raised about $642,960 from 30 investors by selling shares in BigFoot, which was incorporated in 2003.

June 4 Retired School District No. 33 secretary-treasurer Don Murray had harsh words for the Chilliwack school board last week, taking trustees to task for deficit spending and the frequent turnover of secretary-treasurers. Murray told trustees that a dysfunctional board will get fewer good candidates for job openings than a board that works well together, later saying he was embarrassed by their performance.

June 6 Taxpayer funding for Party in the Park has more than tripled in the three years after city council approved a Downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA) request on Tuesday. The BIA received $5,000 in city funding in 2011 for the popular, eight-week event held every Friday night throughout summer at Central Community Park. That rose to $7,000 last year. And while reluctant, council unanimously approved a funding request of $16,000 for 2013.

Thursday that her life has had no meaning since her only child was killed by Sukhvir Singh Grewal’s dangerous driving in Harrison Hot Springs two years ago. Yvonne Van De Pere said her life was complete before her 19-year-old son, Drew Helgason, jumped into the back of Grewal’s car, along with 16-year-old Courtney Lewis, to go to town to buy cigarettes. But when Grewal lost control of the speeding vehicle around a sharp curve and crashed the car, he didn’t just kill Helgason, Van De Pere said, he killed her too.

After battling aggressive brain cancer for nearly two years, LJ’s tumour is back and nothing more can be done. Doctors have said she will be lucky to live past her third birthday on Dec. 5.
