ust like his investors’ millions, Rodney Jack Wharram’s way with words seemed to evaporate Monday at the start of a hearing that could see him banned from the B.C. investment industry. Wharram, who is representing himself at the B.C. Securities Commission hearing, frequently stumbled over his words as he faced allegations around $9.3 million he is alleged to have raised from investors between 2007 and 2010. The commission has accused Wharram of fraud and misleading investors. They say Wharram used investors’ funds to buy a $24,000 diamond ring for his wife and lend her $240,000 to invest in a grocery store and to purchase a home. The commission alleges those moneys were supposed to go towards building homes, a spa, a clubhouse and expanded golf facilities at The Falls Resort in Chilliwack. Wharram was at one time a prominent figure in Chilliwack’s business community. One of his companies, West Karma Ltd., was a large sponsor of the WHL’s Chilliwack Bruins (who have since moved to Victoria), and New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather was an investor in West

The team helped cut the garbage the school sends to the landfill by 60 per cent by monitoring the contents of school garbage cans. “We took all of the garbage in the whole school and piled it on

a tarp, and then the kids sorted it into composting, recycling and true garbage,” McKinley said. “Then we brought all of the classes down and showed them what could go in composting and what could go in recycling.” They’ve repeated the exercise several times to measure the school’s progress. To use the compost, the team decided to build a garden and

donate the vegetables grown in it to Ruth and Naomi’s House. Other green initiatives they’ve championed around the school include “lights-out lunches,” “litter-less lunch Wednesdays” and “water-bottle weekdays.” With $1,000 in Green Games prize money, the school will now be able to buy a water-bottle refilling station to cut down on water being wasted down the drain the way it is with water fountains. McKinley has been told by BC Green Games judges what set her team apart was getting the whole school involved, including custodian Rick Gieselman. Judges were also impressed with how the team measured its progress and by their decision to reach out to the broader community by donating the produce from the school garden to Ruth and Naomi’s.

Train versus tractor

wo Chilliwack teens were injured after a train collided with a tractor at an uncontrolled crossing on South Sumas Road Sunday. Police said the train was hauling grain trailers when it hit the tractor at around 11:45 a.m. The tractor’s driver, a 15-year-old boy, was airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital with serious injuries and is in stable condition, according to police. RCMP said another teen riding in a trailer behind the tractor jumped out before it was struck by the train. He was taken to a Chilliwack hospital with minor injuries. No one on the train was injured.

t didn’t take long for one Chilliwack elementary school to make its mark at the BC Green Games. In only its first year, the Greendale elementary Green Team was among 10 elementary schools from across the province to be chosen as winners in Science World’s annual contest. The school was inspired to get a green team together in the fall after going through a school district BC Hydro workshop on how to conserve electricity. he Chilliwack Safety Village has a new hands-on tool to teach local kids about home safety thanks to the Chilliwack and Sardis Kiwanis clubs. Hazard House is a miniature home with rooms just big enough to fit one class of students. As they move through the building’s pint-sized kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom and garage area, kids are encouraged to point out common household safety hazards like a crock pot too close to a baby’s highchair, missing smoke alarms and too-long cords dangling from the window blinds. Until this year, all Chilliwack Fire Department safety officers had to work with to illustrate those hazards was a doll’s house. “It was us as firefighters standing up going blah, blah, blah,” fire inspector Lisa Axelson told the Times. “Allowing the children to do it, there’s more interaction. It’s hands-on. The kids get to do the work.” Axelson led her first group of students through the house Monday. “I’m learning the logistics of it, but this is way more fun,” she said. “The kids are really enjoying it.” The completion of Hazard House took 10 months of sustained effort and about $25,000 in cash and in-kind contributions, according to Sardis Kiwanis club president Sheila

Kiwanis built the basic structure back then to replace an aging “safety trailer,” but the project stalled until two years ago, when the two local clubs decided it was time to team up and get the job done. Scoble, a St. John Ambulance educator, said the kind of learning the finished project provides will prove worth the effort. “The children need to come through and actually experience this,” she said. “This is a better tool

to communicate what needs to be communicated. This is more real for the kids.” Her husband, Rod Scoble, who is president of the Chilliwack Kiwanis Club, added there’s never been a more important time for kids to learn about safety in the home. “Every educator you talk to these days says kids are going home at three o’clock, and there’s no one home there till five. A

43-year-old Chilliwack man charged with mischief and uttering threats is being kept in custody to decide whether he is fit to stand trial after police observed him talking into a police-cell toilet in an apparent attempt to communicate with Jesus Christ. Police attended Christopher Gauthier’s residence at about 8 a.m. March 29, according to a report read in court by Crown counsel Brian Fell last Monday. A neighbour in the building, Paul McConnachie, had called police because he said Gauthier had tried to kicked down his door after first destroying his own door. McConnachie said Gauthier had also threatened him by saying “I’m going to kill you. I’m going to cut your head off and stab you.” After police arrived, they called up a flight of stairs in the direction of

Gauthier’s unit. He appeared and asked if he could finish praying. About five minutes later, he came down and was arrested without incident. In the course of being advised of his rights, Gauthier told police Jesus Christ was his lawyer. “The officer asked if he wanted to speak with legal aid instead,” Fell said, “and the answer was ‘No, I want Jesus Christ.’” Gauthier was taken to the police detachment cells and was again asked if he wanted to consult legal counsel. “He replied he wanted Jesus and wanted the officer to look in the directory for him,” Fell said. “The officer went to the directory but was unable to locate anyone under the

name of Jesus.” The officer then told Gauthier to notify the guard if he wanted to talk to the lawyer. “When he was left on his own in his cell, Mr. Gauthier was talking to himself, was speaking into the toilet as though it were some form of communication device to communicate with Jesus Christ,” Fell said. Gauthier was in court for a bail hearing Monday, but Fell applied to have Gauthier held in custody until he could undergo a psychological fitness assessment. B.C. Provincial Court Judge Wendy Young ruled in favour of the application, but Gauthier’s psychological assessment was delayed, leading to two more court appearances April 4 and 8. His next appearance was scheduled for April 10.

Bavaria House destroyed by fire

he Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP are investigating a fire that completely destroyed the Bavaria House Restaurant Saturday morning. The popular German restaurant on Luckakuck Way was fully involved

and the fire spread to adjacent buildings by the time firefighters arrived at about 1:16 a.m. Crews from fire halls 1, 4 and 6 managed to contain the blaze, but the restaurant was completely destroyed and adjacent commercial

Plotting a part of party’s DNA

ike Harcourt was probably too nice a guy to become premier of B.C., especially as the first leader of the NDP to win power after the fondly-remembered (by NDPers, at least) Dave Barrett government of 1972-1975. The Barrett government was the first NDP government ever to take power in B.C., after being in opposition as the CCF and NDP for almost 40 years. Harcourt led the party back to power after 16 years in the wilderness. He styled himself “Moderate Mike,” a fairly accurate label, as he tended to try and make as many people happy as possible, and not bash business quite as much as some of his colleagues were prone to do. However, he fell victim to the endless plotting that seems to be an integral part of the NDP’s DNA. Despite the shoddy way he was treated, he remained a member of the NDP and campaigned frequently for the party. In January, he decided not to renew his membership, a fact made known last week. It received a lot of media attention, not surprisingly, given the fact that he endorsed Adrian Dix’s campaign less than a year ago. Harcourt said the Kinder Morgan flip-flop, attack on Carole James’ leadership (do we detect a pattern here?) and NDP fight against the carbon tax in 2009 caused him to not bother paying his dues this year. Those are reasonable doubts, and his action will cause many within the NDP to ponder just where their party is headed, as it undergoes its second leadership campaign in three years.

Sounds a lot like participation to me I feel like I won the lottery. Of the 2,100 or so who entered, about 1,700 were accepted. OK, not exactly long odds when three-quarters of those who applied “win.” My lottery win lets me participate in the National Energy Board (NEB) hearings into Kinder Morgan’s proposed twinning of the 60-year-old Trans Mountain oil pipeline. There are two levels of participation in the hearings being held next January: commenter and intervenor. A commenter can provide views on the project in a single letter of comment. Commenters can’t voice opinions at the hearings. Intervenors, on the other hand, can provide evidence; respond to oral cross-examination on that evidence; cross-examine others; and “provide argument” (whatever that means). Among the 400 intervenors are the Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition, the Popkum Indian Band, the Sto:lo Collective, the WaterWealth Project, the Yarrow Ecovillage, the Fraser Valley Regional District, the City of Abbotsford and the District of Hope. The City of Chilliwack applied and

PAUL J. HENDERSON @peejayaitch was accepted as a commenter. Of the 2,100 who applied, 468 people or organizations were rejected outright. One in five applicants as intervenors were downgraded to commenter. There are 1,250 commenters. There has been much gnashing of teeth regarding the application process to participate. One registered professional planner with experience doing energy research for BC Hydro was denied participation. Eric Doherty told the Tyee that it was “Kafkaesque” that someone with his qualifications would be rejected. The process’s legitimacy is taken away by having such a high bar, he said. Doherty also claimed it took him five hours to apply, something that struck me as odd since it took me about 45 minutes. And I got accepted. I talked to Josh Bourelle in January of this year, and he said the changes really

limit who can participate in the hearings. Those changes came about after many thousands participated in the Northern Gateway hearings. After that, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver expressed concern that “foreign special interest groups” had “hijacked” the regulatory process. Changes were made to ensure that only those with expertise or who were directly affected could take part. Bourelle, who runs Regulatory Consultation Services and used to work for the NEB, said a lot of people are left out of the new process. “We think the process is important and it’s important that not just those who are opposed or supportive are part of it,” he told the Times earlier this year. He argued the new process takes away from the largescale letter campaigns that swamped the Northern Gateway process, but also from regular folks who want to take part. Fair enough, but I think of myself as regular folk and I get to participate. All I did was take 45 minutes, fill out the ninepage form online, and I’m in. I also see at least four intervenors on the list from Chilliwack appear to be

regular folk who live right near the pipeline’s route, including Michael Hale who lives at the Yarrow Eco-Village under which the pipeline runs. So how did I get in? The Trans Mountain Pipeline runs right underneath the back sportsfield at Watson elementary school. My daughter attends the Global Montessori program in a portable at Watson, and my son may do so as well in the next three years. I’m directly affected, so says the NEB. While I understand the critics of the process, 1,750 commenters and intervenors ranging (alphabetically) from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada to Ms. Kat Zimmer sounds like a lot of participation to me. And here’s the thing, if you like democracy and due process, then it’s good to see a lot of people and organizations, all with relevant information or expertise or who are directly affected, will get to have their say. And if you are a cynic, it doesn’t matter how many people and organizations get a say: the NEB and this federal government will green light this project anyway.

Gov’t just protecting voters’ rights Editor: Re: Voting is your Canadian right, April 3 Chilliwack Times. While the president of the Liberal Riding Association, Louis De Jaeger, didn’t address it in his letter to the editor, the truth is there is a problem with both vouching and the voter ID cards in federal elections. An Elections Canada compliance report found, “Serious errors, of a type the courts consider ‘irregularities’ that can contribute to an election being overturned, were found to occur in 12 per cent of all Election Day cases involving voter registration, and 42 per cent of cases involving identity vouching.” An election result overturned by the courts would invalidate every legitimate ballot cast in that election robbing eligible voters of their right to exercise their franchise. This should be of great concern to everyone who claims they are interested protecting “one of the basic rights of Canadians”. Voting is a basic right but it does come with requirements including citizenship, age and residency. While we all want “to increase citizen participation by getting more people out to vote,” we want to ensure that the votes cast meet the strict requirements Canadians have agreed to. That is why the Fair Elections Act will require voters to prove who they are and where they live when they are voting. Voters will be able to do so using 39 separate pieces of ID which include everything from a drivers’ licence to a student card. The Fair Elections Act also recognizes the failure of Elections Canada’s recent promotional campaigns. Since the Elections Canada promotional campaigns began in 1993 voter turnout has fallen from 75 per cent to 61 per cent. Youth participation has fallen 20 per cent since 1984. That is why the Fair Elections Act will see Elections Canada return to informing citizens of the basics of voting: where, when and what ID to bring; and to ensure disabled people know of the extra tools available to help them vote (such as wheelchair ramps, sign language services, Braille services for the visually impaired, for example). While the Liberals may choose to ignore these challenges, the Conservative government is working to enhance our electoral laws and protect the integrity of every ballot. Conservatives just pulling a fast one Editor: Louis De Jaeger’s fair minded piece on the “Fair Elections Act” has hit the target too well for Mark Strahl and his band of “trained seal” confreres in Ottawa. I suspect that even more embarrassment will be meted out on him and Minister Polievre and his boss PM Harper when Sheila Fraser, who was beloved by the Tories when the Liberals were targets, puts them through her meat grinder next week in committee. On this issue, the Tories rely on their tried and tested modus operandi, that being, our way or the highway. I suspect they won’t be able to

Think back a few weeks when the Tories told our wonderful veterans, when they closed those offices across our land, that “no problem,” just go to your friendly Service Canada office and you will get all the help you need. Well, I visited our Chilliwack Service Canada office just today which has just seen a revamping of its consultation rooms. I asked the official if this was in response to their new duties to assist our veterans and was met with a blank look and basically told, “I don’t know anything about that.” Most vouched voters in the last election were given a ballot by the returning officer and sent to vote. In most cases, the officer did not fill out the required form identifying the voter, so really no real record of this could be followed up. The problem of alleged fraud or malfeasance the Tories claim is unproven and is based upon the lack of proper procedure. Most concerning in this Act, is the bill’s provision that would allow well-established political parties, and we know who they are, to be exempt from their spending limits . . . any money spent to raise funds from people who have donated at least $20 to them over the past five years. What about my new party or that of someone else who has no history of past donors? This bill does not give the power to Elections Canada to audit party books. Methinks then, Conservatives are pulling a fast one on the inviolable right of all Canadians, the right to vote in the knowledge that the process is fair. Time is muscle, don’t hesitate, call Editor: A man feels unwell and is short of breath. He calls 911 and later learns he had a heart attack. Just days later, he is discharged with only minimal damage to his heart. His decision to call 911 saved his life. B.C. Ambulance Service reminding people that not all people experience heart attacks in the same way. Many don’t know they are having one until it is too late.

Chest pain is often the primary symptom of heart attack, but other secret signs are shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, sweating, heart palpitations, tiredness and light-headedness. Being aware of the symptoms and calling 911 if a heart attack is suspected can greatly improve survival rates. A heart attack occurs when blockages in arteries restrict the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart. As blood flow stops, the heart cells start to die and cannot regenerate like other parts of the body. In these situations, it’s essential to save time and heart muscle. Getting a patient to the right care at the right time can be a matter of life and death. So what should you do to if you suspect a heart attack? Do: ◗ Call 911. BC Ambulance call takers, and paramedics can begin diagnosis and treatment right away. ◗ Be aware of the symptoms of heart attack. Not all patients experience the same symptoms. Don’t: ◗ Worry about false alarms. Let paramedics and doctors make the call. ◗ Drive yourself to hospital. This could slow your access to treatment and put others at risk if your condition worsens. If you are having a heart attack, BC Ambulance will launch a helicopter to your location so that you will spend a minimal amount of time before getting specialized care at Royal Columbian hospital in New Westminster. T

he hot, noisy Skytrain crush, was stifling and uncomfortable. We couldn’t find seats, and my little daughter, waist high to a grasshopper, couldn’t reach the handrail, so she clung to her dad. She was anxious, squashed, nervous because of the noise and crowd, but got comfort from knowing her dad was with her—even though I didn’t remove her from the discomfort, or save her from the crowd that caused her anxiety. A recent study, by Skye Jethani (Pastor & Teacher), revealed that a person’s view of God is shaped by the emphasis their church places on God. He suggests four emphases church may place on God that form a person’s perception of God. What is your perception of God? Do you relate to one of these views: Life under God: This emphasis

God is with you through it all suggests that life is about following the commands and rules of God. We exist to just obey God and if not, we suffer His punishment and retribution. “Life under God” sees God as divine judge, punishing those who break His law, or disobey Him. Life for God: This suggests that we exist only to serve God. In order to win favour from God, we must be constantly busy serving Him. We sign up for missions trips, we help the poor and unfortunate, we enlist to do stuff at church, but life is still painful and it seems we cannot do enough to please God or earn His blessing. Life from God: Here we are taught that God exists to serve us. If we obey

Him, have enough faith, and do all the right things He will bless us, make us wealthy and healthy, and life will be good. But we wake up the next day and we still have financial struggles, life still hurts and your husband is still a jerk. What are we missing? Isn’t God supposed to make it all alright, and fix everything that goes wrong? Not according to Job, who was a righteous man, did all the right things and still experienced horrible loss and pain. So, how should we view God then, and how should we relate to Him? I would suggest in the same way my little girl relates to her dad when in an overcrowded, hot, noisy Skytrain . . . by clinging to Him, knowing that

although we find ourselves in scary and uncomfortable situations, God may not rescue us from them but He will go through them with us. Life with God: This is the key to enduring the pains and anxieties of life-relationship. It is at the core of the message Jesus tried to bring us, and is at the heart of the Christian faith. It proclaims that God desires relationship with us, and that although He will still allow us to go through hard and painful times, He will go through them with us and not let us go. This view of God, the God who is with us, encompasses all of the other views, yet emphasizes none of them. It is true therefore, that we should lead a life of obedience to God, but

only because we love Him and desire to obey Him. We should live to serve God, but our acts of service should be motivated by sharing His love with the rest of the world, and we should expect blessing from God, not because we have “earned” it, but because God, like a loving Father, desires good things for His children. Tomorrow morning when you awake, life is still going to offer up struggle, pain, financial hardship . . . but also joy, love, happiness and more. The important thing to note is that whatever you wake up to, you don’t have to face it alone. God promises to be with you through it all, a faithful companion that you can cling to, and with whom you can find strength, hope and peace. So, start a new day tomorrow, surrender it all to Him, and ask Him to walk through it all with you. Doubtful legislation will bring change ribbon cutting ceremony and a photo-op tour. But while the BC Liberals pulled out all the stops to put on a show at UFV in Chilliwack, simmering below the surface was a tension among some in attendance about what the government has just done to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) with Bill 24. “There is no new farmland to be had.” That simple, if obvious, statement comes from Dr. Lenore Newman who holds the Canada Research Chair in food security and the environment at UFV. “About 33 per cent of the Earth’s land area is in rangeland or field crops, and that number won’t really go up much more; there are no new frontiers,” Newman told the Times. Newman was in attendance at the ACE opening, where speakers, including Clark, focused on the importance of food grown locally, both for sustainability reasons and for economic growth. The ACE and its 780-square-metre demonstration barn for livestock, swine and poultry and a 600-square-metre polycarbonate greenhouse will go some way towards supporting agriculture in the Fraser Valley and B.C. “This has been a dream for our community for a long time,” Throness said in a speech. Virk pointed to the state-ofthe-art technology featured at the centre. “This is not Fraser Valley, this is not Canada, this is the best technology in the world,” he said. UFV president Mark Evered said that throughout history there have been instances of economies around the world that have collapsed for want of a good food supply. “This is not a luxury that we are talking about here,” Evered said.

What no one mentioned at the opening of ACE—a centre dedicated to improving agriculture best practices and educating the next generation of farmers—is the government’s recent “improvements” to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC). Bill 24 breaks the ALR into two zones: zone 1, which includes Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and the South Coast, including the Fraser Valley; and zone 2, which is made up of the North, the Interior and the Kootenays.

“About 33 per cent of Earth’s land area is in rangeland or field crops, and that number won’t really go up much more; there are no new frontiers.” Dr. Lenore Newman In zone 1, little will change, although the changes also mean the ALC will have to report to government, and new regional boards could mean increased pressure for exclusions from local municipalities and developers, according to Newman. In zone 2, there will be leeway for non-farm use, to “provide farmers with more flexibility to support their farming operations.” At the opening of ACE, Clark was asked by the Times how the changes to the ALC will further the local food sustainability model. “We need to make sure that farmers can stay on their farms and make a living, and increasingly that has become difficult in parts of the province where farmland isn’t nearly as productive as here in the Fraser Valley,” Clark said. “So part of the purpose of those changes is to ensure that farms are

sustainable for farmers that are living there now. And second, they maintain that capacity to pass that farm off to their children or to find interested buyers.” Newman said she thinks there is some validity in the move to give farmers in zone 2 more non-farm use, but some “excellent land” around Kamloops has been included in zone 2. “[A]nd it seems there would be better ways to allow flexibility without opening up zone 2 to absolutely everything,” she said. “So in some ways I agree with some of the things the Premier is saying, but it isn’t clear this particular legislation will bring about those changes.” Newman added that in B.C., the general sentiment about farmland ranges from indifference to, in places such as Delta and Richmond, outright hostility. She pointed to the incident last year in Richmond where a piece of farmland in the ALR was found being used as a dumpsite for construction waste. “There is a lack of respect, even for the best lands in the province,” she said. “Not to go too biblical on you, but we are supposed to be stewards of the Earth.” Overall, Newman said she agrees with some of the intent of what is planned in zone 2, but she doesn’t see how Bill 24 will help. And worse, the move to regional panels will only speed up land loss, already a serious problem. “If they really want to strengthen zone 1, they should freeze or limit exclusions in those areas, and put more money into assistance and research for farmers.” Worldwide, land is being lost to pollution, poor management, desertification, climate change and urban sprawl. “B.C. is actually in good shape compared to most places, but only if we maintain our focus on ensuring the land is there a hundred years down the line.”

The allegations have not been proven and Wharram has never been charged in criminal court. The hearing began on Monday with testimony from senior investigator Elizabeth Chan, who took the panel through the paper trail left by Falls Capital Corp. that left more than $2 million of investors’ money in West Karma’s bank account. Chan showed records that Falls Capital had attracted $5.3 million of investors’ money. But when The Falls Resort’s developer went bankrupt in 2011, only $2.1 million of investors’ money had actually been passed on. Transit drivers vote to strike

There is no immediate threat to bus service in Chilliwack with the strike mandate voted on by CUPE Local 561.

Transit drivers in Chilliwack are among the CUPE Fraser Valley bus operators who voted 94 per cent in favour of a strike mandate on Sunday. Members of CUPE Local 561 gave their bargaining team the mandate as

part of the negotiation process, according to CUPE national communications spokesperson Murray Bush. The vote Sunday does not mean buses will stop running in Chilliwack any time soon. The First Canada ULC employees are bargaining with the employer and say, in a press release, “the strike vote is to communicate their resolve to get a new collective agreement.”

The union has to serve a 72-hour strike notice with the BC Labour Relations Board before any job action. The two sides have met five times since the contract expired last summer, according to the union, and they are seeking for more meetings. CUPE 561 represents 134 bus drivers, mechanics, cleaners and maintenances workers.

› Sports Great way for women to network { ROCKERS, from page A16 } knowing looks of the people who are out there,” said Anne Russell of the times she runs into fellow players out in the community, in offices and behind deli counters. “It’s kind of like a little secret handshake.” How did it all start? “Wine and friends,” organizer Tara Field says with a laugh. Field and Russell are founding members of the original Rosedale Rockers, the over-30 women’s team that started it all in 2007. Made up mostly of moms of kids at East Chilliwack elementary school (mostly moms who’d never played soccer before), the team first tried its luck in the regular leagues. “We went out the first year and just

got creamed in the ordinary women’s seven-aside league, which included women 18 and up and women who knew how to play soccer,” Russell said. “We were kind of told we were not really welcome back,” said Field. Undaunted, the team decided to form its own league, hoping to get enough players in the first year to make up three teams of 12 players of each for scrimmages. The response from local women was swift and positive. “That first year we had enough for eight teams,” Field said. “That’s what we’re really proud of. It was obviously a need. Women just wanted to get out, have fun.” The league added four more teams three years ago to keep up with demand, and all those teams were full

Her favourite part, however, remains the game itself. “When you’re out there for that hour, you forget all your other troubles,” she said. “You get to be silly and a member of a team again.” Field sees the league as way for women to do something for themselves while setting a good example for their kids. That’s why she has stayed on as an organizer even after a series of major soccer injuries took her out the game two years ago. “It’s very satisfying to me to say, ‘Hey, look what we’ve done.’”

A

whole new crop of young tennis enthusiasts could soon be hitting the Dorothy Kostrzewa Tennis Courts on Portage Avenue. A five-minute walk away, kids at Little Mountain elementary are getting ready to learn the basics of the game with free tennis lessons thanks to their school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC). Starting April 28, every student at the school from kindergarten to

Grade 6 will get an introduction to the sport in four free sessions with the Tennis XL In School Program. Little Mountain vice-principal Greg Nelmes, a lifelong enthusiast of the game, has worked to get the program into the school since he was transferred from Promontory elementary last year. He had brought Tennis XL, a Vancouver-based company, into Promontory, but Little Mountain is a different type of school. “The community’s a little different here,” Nelmes said. “It’s not quite as well off as it is up in Prom-

ontory. Up there we were able to charge the kids and parents a small fee. At this school the PAC has generously provided some funding, so it’s not going to cost the kids anything.” While tennis is sometimes seen as a hoity-toity, elitist sport, Nelmes said that reputation is undeserved. “In Canada, it’s a relatively inexpensive sport once you’ve got your tennis runners and a racquet and some tennis balls,” he said, adding that local kids can play for free at good outdoor courts at Portage,

Rosedale community school, Chilliwack secondary (where the courts will be lit), Sardis secondary, Twin Rinks and G.W. Graham. For Nelmes, bringing tennis to Little Mountain provides one more healthy activity option for students. “We’re trying to offer variety, so kids can discover what they’re passionate about,” he said. Once the free lessons are over, Nelmes plans to bring Tennis XL in for an after-school program where kids who are keen can continue on for a fee.

fter walking past rows of garlic into Andy and Cara Abrahams’s kale patch at Abundant Acres in Greendale, we snap off a couple of the light green tops of winterbor and red Russian kale and pop them in our mouths. The fresh crunch of the delicious new growth tastes like spring. The Abrahamses are harvesting the kale this day to sell at the Abbotsford Farm & Country Market the next day. The Eaten Path is all about where we get our food and, for non-gardeners, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) harvest box is the closest you can get to growing your own. The Abrahamses run a 70-member CSA off a 1.5-acre plot of land in Greendale where they live with their two children, nine-year-old Sarah and four-year-old Jacob. “We’ve seen a real hunger for local food during these last few years,” Cara says. “People care about how their food is grown and what impact that has on the Earth and its inhabitants. They also love vegetables that taste like they are supposed to. I’ve had people say, ‘I don’t like beets, but I like yours!’” Abundant Acres is one of only a handful of CSAs in Chilliwack. The CSA concept isn’t new, but, ironically, is relatively uncommon in the heart of growing country in Chilliwack. CSAs are a partnership between consumers and farmers. Those who join pay the farm in advance—for example, $400 in the spring for 20 weeks at $20—and get a box full of fresh vegetables delivered or available for pick up at the farm each week. The Abrahamses have been fulltime vegetable farming since 2010, and running their CSA out of Greendale since 2012. Then there are Aaron and Noella Oss, who run Ossome Acres in Rosedale on a 40-acre farm that has been in the family for five generations. The couple were growing food as a secondary income before Aaron was laid off from his full-time job as a welder in May 2011. So that spring they planted more, started selling at farmers’ markets and then launched a

PAUL J. HENDERSON @peejayaitch CSA program in 2012. “We enjoy providing people with healthy vegetables,” Aaron says. “We get to know a lot of people. It’s community building.” In addition to unique heirloom varieties, sprouts and other interesting crops, the Osses provide eggs and other products such as pickled beets and dried bean soups. Another CSA program in Chilliwack was run for three years by Nevin and Shauna Gavigan out of the Yarrow Eco-Village. The Gavigans have moved on, but this year two farms at the eco-village have teamed up. Ripple Creek Organic Farm and the Farmacy are running a 20-member CSA over 16 weeks. Chris Kay at Ripple Creek says they promise the freshest, highest quality vegetables they can. “We really appreciate the CSA model and the benefits it provides to both farmers and customers,” Kay said. Back over at Abundant Acres, the Abrahamses are shifting into spring harvest season and the CSA boxes are coming soon. It’s hard work, but all the farmers offering CSAs in Chilliwack provide a product that is hard to match for freshness even at farmers’ markets. ven the most ardent supporters of kale have to concede that not everyone loves this hardy vegetable, and kids may be a hard sell. So it was great to see at Abundant Acres in Greendale as nine-year-old Sarah Abrahams and even four-yearold Jacob popped fresh kale leaves into their mouths as a tasty snack. Like parsley before it, kale has gone in recent years from its undervalued status as mere garnish to centre stage in foodie culture for its extreme health benefits. “Kale is a member of the cabbage family and is packed with bioflavonoids and carotenoids, which are specific antioxidants associated with anti-cancer health benefits,” says Dr. Joanne Menard, a Chilliwack naturopathic physician. “It’s an especially wonderful food for women as it contains indol-3-carbinol, a compound that fights estrogen-dependent conditions such as breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and fibrocystic breast disease. It’s also very rich in vitamin C, beta carotene, and vitamin K and contains more iron and calcium than almost any other vegetable.” Kale’s high vitamin C also helps the body absorb its iron, making it a good food for vegetarians. Menard says kale is also a good source of magnesium, potassium, folic acid, and is rich in the eye-

The process starts with a CAT scan taken of the patient’s jawbone which allows for the generation of a three-dimensional model of the jawbone. This image is used in virtual reality software to plan the implant

placement without the presence of the patient. Two to four weeks later your new teeth are ready for implant, which takes about an hour for each upper and lower. Teethin-a-day provides less postoperative discomfort, less swelling and bruising and less chair time for the patient at the surgery office.

Most patients resume their normal activities the next day.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Moe Gannon announces his sudden passing at the age of 83. Moe, a long time resident of Prince George, was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario to Louise and James Gannon on Feb. 14, 1931 and died peacefully on March 29, 2014 while visiting with family in Seoul, South Korea. Moe enlisted with the army in the early 1950s and was eventually stationed at CFB Chilliwack. There he met and married Shirley- Ann Holmberg and started a family that came to include 4 daughters. Moe and Shirley remained life long partners and friends celebrating 50 years of marriage in June, 2006. Moe was predeceased by his wife Shirley in 2008 and his daughter “little Jo” in 2006. Prayers will be held at St. Mary's Church on Friday April 11th at 7:00 p.m., and the Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church on Saturday April 12th at 10:30 a.m. Donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul in lieu of flowers. April 10th 1948-March 31st 2014 On a beautiful spring morning we said goodbye to our beloved Rita as she slipped the bounds of this earth to continue on the next stage of her great journey. Who was Rita? She was a daughter alongside her sisters Irene (Gene), Marion (Ken), and Sharon (Joe) - to Charlie and Gertrude Paris, who both predeceased her. She was a mother to Cathy and John, borne from her first marriage to Chris Hummel, who passed away in 1983. She was a wife to Stephen, her second husband, a perfect pairing that gave both the opportunity to find love once again. She was a stepmother and a grandmother too, a role which Rita cherished. Many nieces and nephews are also touched by the loss of their Aunty Rita. Born and raised in Vancouver, Rita and Chris would rear their own family on the Sunshine Coast until Chris’ untimely passing. Not long after, Rita would return to the city, settling in North Van, where she would eventually meet and then marry Stephen in 1998. The couple moved to Chilliwack in 2005, where they would spend their remaining years together. Whether she was snowbirding down in Arizona, cruising through the Panama locks, or just taking the RV to a more local destination for a week or two, Rita loved to travel. Stephen and Rita shared many of these good times with many friends, both old and new, who will be just as saddened by her loss as her family is. Rita was a practical, no-nonsense woman who always seemed to know the sensible course of action...and this straightforwardness of her character rarely left any doubt as to which side of the fence she was on. This clarity of reason she possessed aided her in becoming the master of her own destiny during these last few months, and the strength and grace she exhibited during these trying times - as much for herself as for those around her - serve as an example to us all on how one may die with dignity. It is with heavy hearts that we say our final farewell to Rita, yet we may all take comfort in knowing that the memories she’s left us with will help us to smile once again. We love you. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the staff and volunteers at Cascades Hospice for doing such a wonderful job in making Mom comfortable during her final weeks. In lieu of flowers the family gratefully requests that you make a donation to the charity/ organization of your choosing.

DICKOUT, Merva (Johnston) Merva passed away peacefully on December 11, 2013 at Bradley Centre in Chilliwack, BC, 8 days before her 90th birthday. Her niece Rhonda was by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Quentin, her parents Alice and Robert; her siblings, Joe, Willard, Lorne, Tom, Roy and Lila; her nephew Larry; her great-nephew Tucker and great-niece Rayel and her great granddaughter Mila. She is survived by her children Jeanne and Jack (Verona); her grandchildren Kara, Travis (Suzanne), Dustin (Lisa), Darren

(Kristin), and Janelle; her great grandchildren Owen, Miranda, Drew, Asha, Julianna, Kala and Quentin; and three generations of nieces and nephews. Merva was born in the family home in Rosedale, the sixth of seven children. In 1946 she married Quentin and in 1948 they moved to their beloved little farm on Promontory. They remained there until Quentin’s death in December 2006. She will be remembered for her love for, and dedication to, family, friends, church, and community. Memorial Service and Tea will be held at 2pm on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Carman United Church, 7258 Vedder Road, Chilliwack, BC.
